What are your thoughts on Kokutou Mikiya?

Mikiya is aesthetically perfect. Not unlike Soujuurou, he hits that perfect sweetspot between comforting and unsettling. He is that caring presence who is inexplicably incapable of changing his ways no matter how many messed up experiences he goes through. This unshakably anchored kindness and amiability keep making him every freak's favorite guy throughout Kara no Kyoukai and the presentation of it feels completely convincing each time.

But while Mikiya's character concept is flawlessly executed, his roles in the stories he's are often not as likable. His intervening with Fujino's attacks and letting Keita get away with just a scare is very understandably the correct thing but it still doesn't feel good to watch. And A Study On Murder (Part 2) is a whole larger scale version of that. Mikiya spends the whole part arguing with Shiki that he'll never forgive her if she murders Shirazumi, then she very rightfully murders Shirazumi, and Mikiya responds with a casual "Yeah, I'll never forgive you for that, anyway, wanna grab something for dinner?", revealing the high emotional stakes of the finale were fake all along.

Special mention to The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II for featuring Mikiya as the best-utilized one-off guest character in the El-Melloi series. His vibes are constantly in the aforementioned sweetspot and the narrative focus is set heavily on Mikiya's miraculous way of providing a sense of normality to the abnormal without trying. Sanda really nailed this guest appearance.

How to read Kara no Kyoukai/The Garden of Sinners

Kara no Kyoukai (literally translated The Boundary of Emptiness, officially translated The Garden of Sinners) is a light novel series by Kinoko Nasu, of Tsukihime and Fate fame. It was Nasu's first published work, originally published online in the 90s. You might know it most for the ufotable movie adaptations, or for the main character Shiki being playable in FGO.

This series predates Nasu's better-known Tsukihime and Fate series, and you can see inklings of ideas he'd reuse and refine in those works. Most prominent of these is the character of Shiki Ryougi, whose name, multiple personalities, and Mystic Eyes of Death Perception would all inspire Shiki Tohno of Tsukihime. This is also the series where Fate's famous Counter Force was first introduced.

The Kara no Kyoukai novels were Nasu's first published work, but have had a rough history in terms of translation to English. There have been bad and just straight up inaccurate attempts, and a publishing company that wanted to put them out officially went under before it had the chance, but now all these years later the series is finally completed in English!

Kara no Kyoukai is a supernatural mystery series set in Tokyo in the 1990s. Each chapter is an individual story (barring two-parters), but they all come together to tell a larger tale. It is written in anachronic order, not chronological order. As you read and skip through the timeline of Shiki and Mikiya's life, the story all starts to come together.
