KnK ep 4!
This is probably one of my favorites.
Tumblr media
This episode follows up from the last time of when we get that Mikiya was visiting her while she was in a coma. Turns out SHIKI (male Shiki) died somewhere between them trying to kill him in high school, but he left Shiki alone and in that time, she spent in the void (is that the root?).
This is the beginning of her new powers: the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception. I love that ep3 she explains about it and in ep4 we get it’s origins of how she obtained them.
Tumblr media
Shiki gets introduced to Touko. And we get to see Touko be such a bad-a, I don’t know, even if she doesn’t take center stage much Touko is so cool even when she’s just being regular and explaining.
Also, this is the 3rd time I’ve seen a magus come to a hospital and tell a patient whom they do not know that they’re a ‘magician’ (granted Touko knew Shiki through Mikiya) but her sister does this with Shiki Tohno and Kiritsugu did this with Shirou. I’m just going to start labeling all characters like this as the cool people.
I could go on about how cool Shiki is. Just the fact she’s persevering despite suffering the lost of her other self, even though she doesn’t want to, she’s not going to let SHIKI’s death be in vain.
And That moment when she cut her hair, I loved it. A change of hairstyle is always a symbolism of a person changing, cutting away ties that bound them to a part that want to let go or have to let go (Riku from KHII to KH3; Garnet from FFIX, Mulan, Korra (I think I’m missing someone)). Granted Shiki’s hair was already mid before her coma, but the long hair is her ‘weak self’.
I loved that line Touko says, “empty means you can fill it with something”. Like that is so true, in times of sadness, we feel empty, a void in place from what left us but slowly, slowly, we can fill that void again.
This is one of my most favorite episodes in KnK. I honestly can’t wait to read the LN.

Answer 1 through 50
Okay. You called my bluff. (ok not really a bluff, tbh, thank you I appreciate you) Unfortunately, we're having an internet outage where I live, so this is gonna take a while. Also, I have to do this on the webpage, on my phone, cause otherwise I can't have an 'under the cut.'
1. Do you have a crush on anyone?
I suppose you could call it a crush. That's one layer to how I feel. Like an onion :p
2. What's your favorite candy?
Ferror Roche, or however you spell it, Unless it's a holiday, then I Love those chocolate covered marshmallow treats.
3. Favorite love song?
I don't really listen to music much, tbh, love songs included. The first one to come to mind is "Love Story" by Taylor Swift. My favorite when I actually think about it has to be "You Are My Sunshine" by Johnny Cash.
4. What was your first kiss like?
My first kiss. I had my first kiss last year, actually, at the same age I am now, 22. That was my first date, too, such as it was during a pandemic. I hadn't -still haven't, I guess- had many 'first's.' It was awkward, but nice. Chaste, to start.
5. What was your last kiss like?
My last kiss, was a goodbye.
6. Sexual/romantic orientation?
I'm reasonably sure I'm straight, heteroromantic. I've questioned all my orientations several times over the years, but nothing seems to fit as well as that does.
7. Do you prefer poems or love letters?
I would be over the moon to get either. I've written a few poems, though they weren't For anyone. I would prefer love letters, though. Poems can wax and wain to the individuals interpretation, but love letters can declare for all to see.
8. Favorite fanfic trope?
God, I'm Super self-indulgent with my fanfic. I love Mary Sue's, fix-it, time travel, amnesia, self-insert. I want everything to be okay, and for the main character to be able to have at least some idea of what challenges they'll face.
9. Have you ever been in love?
Have been, still am.
10. Favorite milkshake flavor?
Strawberry. Also favorite ice cream flavor. Chocolate's fine, but strawberry Hagen Daaz is The Best. (tbh it's also a sorta reference to my fav character/anime, Ryougi Shiki from Kara no Kyoukai. It's also just damn good ice cream tho
11. Dinner dates or Brunch dates?
Dinner dates could be a great end to the day, but brunch date leaves the possibility for a full day together to look forward to, so I'll go with that.
12. Favorite flowers?
Sunflowers. Though lilacs are nice too.
13. Favorite perfume/cologne?
I've used a vanilla sugar scent in the past? Don't use or have others use it enough to have a favorite.
14. Favorite candle scent?
I got a pack of incense a while back, a dozen different scents. I think my favorite is called Celestial. It's smells like... lavender and petrichor and stardust, I suppose.
15. What's your ideal first date?
Ideal, so everything's perfect. Hiking in the woods, a mountainous area, lots of ups and downs and winding paths and beautiful colors and views. We come to a clearing, and a picnic I've prearranged is already set up next to a glittering lake. We sit, and eat, and talk.
16. What's your favorite love story?
Just the other day, I was finally able to watch The Princess Bride. I absolutely loved it.
17. What's the most attractive thing a person could wear?
Easy. One of my shirts, and that's all that's visible. Could they be wearing something underneath it? Maybe. But you can't be sure, unless they show you one way or another  It's a sort of, are they aren't they thing. That said, it works for just about anything where you can't tell if they're wearing short shorts or something, but it works best if it's something more casual than a dress, like a oversized hoodie or shirt.
18. Chocolate, vanilla, or red velvet?
Chocolate. Vanillas alright, red velvets gross.
19. Snow, rain, or sun?
God, we just got snow here that Actually Lasted All Day. That's a miracle tbh. I absolutely love it.
20. Sweetest romantic memory?
We were swinging at the local park, just talking. And I looked over, and the sun was shining through the trees onto the face of an angel. I could have spent eternity in that moment.
21. Favorite dating sim? (And favorite character?)
The only dating sims I know are yandere dating sim, and hautiful boyfriend. Favorite character in general is Ryougi Shiki
22. Fictional crushes?
...Ryougi Shiki...
23. What's your dream wedding like?
It's a small affair, outside, in our backyard on our plant of land, amongst the orchards and vegetable gardens. There's a living arch made of roses I've been growing in secret in preparation, and the bride's bouquet is made from cuttings we took on the spot. The sun is shining, everyone's full of joy, and our love is sure.
24. What makes you blush?
Sincere expressions of love, or even just Being Known. If you say you care for me I Will Melt and that is a Threat.
25. Do you believe in love at first sight?
I have to. I can't disregard my own experiences. That said, it's important to say that love is also something you work towards, together, day in and day out. It's not always hard work, it might not even seem like work, but it's an active thing.
26. Do you believe in soulmates?
I think there are several people you can meet over the course of your life you can call a soulmate.
27. Denim jackets, leather jackets, or bomber jackets?
Leather jackets cause I live in Texas. Otherwise, bomber jackets.
28. What's your sign?
Taurus. Lmk if you want my complete chart from that star app.
29. Are you single?
Unfortunately.
30. Do you prefer to charm, or be charmed?
I think I'm quite charming, I'd definitely say I'm in touch with people, though my execution probably leaves something to be desired. That said, I Love to be charmed. Tell me you like me, tell me I'm wanted. Hell yeah.
31. Guitar or piano?
Piano. Love the classics. I was actually looking at how much pan flutes cost just the other day.
32. Favorite romcom? (Or any romantic movie?)
Once again going with The Princess Bride here.
33. Do you fall in love easily?
Far too easily, I'm afraid. Show your interest in me, and you'll catch mine in you. Doesn't happen very often, though. And if it's just something like a dating profile, I'm far pickier.
34. Valentine's decorations, yay or nay?
If it's something personal, absolutely. As long as it has meaning, it's worth it. Even if the holiday itself is just to sell cards.
35. Would you like to propose, or be proposed to? What's your dream proposal?
I would propose, after it's been made mutually clear and discussed we're both up for it. As a kid I dreamed about proposing on one of those boat rides under Niagara Falls. Now, I think it'd be during a hike, on an overlooking cliff, basically like my ideal first date, actually. That, or somewhere personal to the two of us.
36. Cloud gazing or star gazing?
Star gazing, definitely. Out under the stars, looking up and sneaking glances at each other. Telling stories and making up constellations. What's not to love?
37. Do you like to dance?
Oooh, no. I've never danced, not really the social dancing type. Never really took the opportunity too.
38. What's your OTP?
....Ryougi Shiki and Mikiya Kokuto
39. Kittens or puppies?
You're gonna make me CHOOSE?! ...puppies, because they're more lively and willing to interact with me, generally speaking.
40. Coffee, hot chocolate, or tea?
Hot chocolate. Never got into coffee, I want to like hot tea, but eh. Iced tea is good tho y'all.
41. Favorite soda?
God as a kid I Devoured grape Crush soda. Like. 24 cans a week. Mainly drink juice nowadays. Or choccy milk
42. Do you prefer gazing wistfully out the window or lying dramatically on the sofa?
Window, definitely. Light as well have a view if I've gotta be dramatic, right?
43. Favorite ABBA song?
"Take a Chance on Me" followed shortly by "Dancing Queen"
44. Fuck/Marry/Kill?
You didn't name anyone, so... Fuck Lauren German (I've been watching Lucifer) Marry the one I love, and kill, idk, Trump?
45. Favorite pajamas?
For myself? They're fleece, I think. Usually I just sleep in my boxers tho. For my theoretical partner? How about my boxers ;)
46. Favorite liquor?
I've never had any alcohol, and I don't really intend to.
47. Do you think about love alot?
Every day. It's what drives me.
48. A walk in the park or a walk on the beach?
Walk in the park. More cover ;)
49. Hand kisses or nose kisses?
How about a hand kiss going up the arm, slowly, sensually, all the way up the arm, to the shoulder, taking a stop on the side of the neck, and right before it gets to the lips... Nose kisses.
50. What's your dreamhouse?
It's in a mountainous area. On at least 5 acres. Plenty of woods with trails in them, bordering a national park. On my land, there's an orchard of fruit trees, and greenhouses with herbs and vegetables. The house itself is actually japanese inspired. There's an outdoor garden you can access after coming through the entrance. The bedroom door is a sliding one, through a shortened circular opening. The whole thing gives off a cozy feeling. The love of my life has made their presence known in every room of the house.

Shipping 2 characters together cuz their VAs are married.
I fangirled hard anyway.
Kenichi Suzumura x Maaya Sakamoto - I became SuzuKen fan when I first heard Lavi’s voice (DGM) and I became Maaya’s when I found out she voiced Tomoyo in Tsubasa.
Mikiya Kokuto x Ryougi Shiki   The fated pair in Type Moon’s Kara no Kyoukai series.   Mikiya being so in love with Shiki that even though Shiki herself told him she is a murderer, he refuses to believe such statement and continue to believe in her.I like seeing their dynamic and how they interact with each other.   Kara no Kyoukai itself has a very dark tone and that is reflected by their main couple. The story revolve mainly around Shiki and her life choices. Its a psycho-thriller-paranormal-mystery anime that I would recommend anyone to watch.   It has its own chronological order though, so a heads up to anyone who are interested in Kara no Kyoukai; the first movie is not chapter 1 of the story. On another note: Aaaaaaaaaa!!!!! They are so cute together!!!! And they are also married in the anime!!!!! AND HAS A DAUGHTER!!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
Asuka Shinn x Luna Hawke   Haha, I am actually still new to these two. Meaning I only started watching Gundam Seed Destiny yesterday, and still have not yet grasp the nature of their relationship. I have to admit, the main reason I started the anime is to hear SuzuKen and Maaya’s voice interacting together haha. Isn’t that weird.   Though on the side note, Gundam Seed Destiny is the first time SuzuKen and Maaya ever worked together and this is also the anime that Maaya first “have a crush” on SuzuKen, eheheeh.

Well, was debating but since they are movies I’m just going to post a review/thoughts for each movie of KnK here.
Tumblr media
The first movie set the tone for the series as a mystery, dark elements, fantasy in modern times type of story, and it introduces us to our three main character: Shiki, Mikiya and Touko.
There’s a ton of information and some action towards the climax of the film. Even though I love Ufotable’s amazing fight sequences, KnK’s mystery and character interactions are very enjoyable to me so I don’t mind if there is not a lot of action. There is, however, lots of gore/blood and I think quite a bit of sensitive topics are discussed.
From the first movie, I really love Shiki. She’s cold, confident and just doesn’t care but not in a way that makes her a difficult protagonist. I really laughed with Haagen-Daze being in the film 😂 was not expecting a real brand of ice cream to be shown. She’s really cool, and the progression of the film from the beginning to the end has a good setup in my opinion.
So the thing I really like about KnK/Garden of Sinners is the actual nonlinear and confusing setups. It uses that confusion to build up a mystery while also establishing the world and characters. Each movie leaves me with some questions but not in a frustrating way, it keeps me coming back and wanting to see more.

  Genre: Existential horror, supernatural, artsy
Length:
Studio: ufotable
Sometimes it’s hard to wrap your head around just being you. What does that even mean, anyway? What exactly are you supposed to do with existing? Nothing really, that’s the rub. It’s the same old questions philosophers and emo teens have been asking since the dawn of time and we’re no closer to an answer. Or rather, the answer is different for each person and seeking it out can be a painful and violent venture. Yet this is exactly what each player in this tragedy must do, in their own way, their paths crossing and diverging again as they each must find their own truth within themselves. The only thing we can be sure about is that there will be blood.
I’ve already watched 4 of these movies. I’ve shared my thoughts along the way. There were highs and lows but one thing I can definitely say is that for better or worse, the Garden of Sinners franchise has a very distinctive voice. And in this 5th chapter, it was screaming!
it’s a figure of speech, no one screams in this movie
I watched this movie last night and it’s still dancing around my head. Vividly! Throughout the movies, I’ve been praising production and tracking the use of non-textual (verbal) storytelling. It’s what first attracted me to the franchise, and I was sad to see this aspect pared down as the movies progressed. I can tell you, it’s back in full force and then some!
The overall quality of the art, acting and animation is fairly similar to what we saw in the last two movies, but the directing has taken quite the ambitious turn! There are tons of flair in framing and angles. Action is shot with wavering focus, almost simulating motion sickness. Of course, all of it is carefully intertwined with the story and really an integral part of the narrative. I can’t praise that framing enough, which becomes almost a central feature of the second arc (Mikiya’s) but I’ll talk about it more when I get to the story. Like I said, the way the plot is presented is as important as what’s happening in it.
And that’s just one aspect. The use of symbolic colour is liberally applied both in direct touches and in overall ambient tint throughout the movie. Perspective is constantly tweaked (forced, fisheye, panoramic) which gives eerie qualities to scenes or creates uneasy claustrophobia, which then affects how you take in the dialogue and events to ensure both a literal and emotional read of the story.
there’s no way you can really appreciate it without watching the movie
Finally editing tricks are incorporated throughout. Frequent jump cuts, repeated scenes sometimes identical sometimes shown from different angles or points of view and odd cold cuts before what would be considered the natural endpoint of a scene both focus your attention on specific elements without the need of exposition and creates interesting reveals. We even get tiny slivers of flashbacks that clearly fit into the narrative of previous movies to give you new reveals and flesh out the general lore and world-building of the franchise.
In case I’ve not made it abundantly clear, the technical presentation of the move was a spellbinding act of artistry. So far, the best example in the series and really one of the best I’ve seen in anime in general.
I was saying something nice…and it’s “Irina”
But with a two-hour movie, you need more than just craftsmanship to hold your attention. The Garden of Sinners established its core thesis right from the start. These movies deal with existential angst in a brutal and deliberate way. They attack it from every angle. The meaning and responsibility of life. The vague notion of personal identity. The dissonance of existing in a reality entirely defined by our personal understanding and experiences while colliding with everyone else’s realities.
These are heady themes and to be honest, the franchise can be hit or miss in its attempts at expression, but it is always deliberate and single-minded which I appreciate. Whether you agree or not with the messaging or even the purpose of exploring such grandstanding philosophical questions at all, you can’t deny that the Garden of Sinners has something to say. That’s worth something in my book.
This specific movie is presented in three general arcs. In the first, we follow a young man named Enjo who meets Shiki by accident, and the mysteries he brings with him. Enjo is trying to escape a tragic past with nowhere to go but as the story progresses and dead people seem to be coming back to life, it gets difficult to pinpoint what’s real and what isn’t.
does Enjo remind you of someone?
Together, Shiki and Enjo are trying to figure out exactly what happened in this condominium complex when Enjo thought he had lost his family. It’s a very sad story with some downright unpleasant events but it’s framed as a mystery and occasional almost like a procedural. I’ve come to realize that I can enjoy very sad events in a different way when they come with a puzzle. My mind fixates on collecting clues and solving the mystery instead of being sad for the people within it. I think this is why we can watch crime shows without crying or calling them horror.
The second arc gives us intertwining blocks of events from Mikiya’s point of view (I learned that this was Kokuto’s name and I love it). We realize that characters we thought were absent were actually also actively taking part in the story and the two arcs eventually collide.
This is where that framing I was talking about earlier becomes so important. Shiki is part of this arc, but we never see her. She’s always just off camera. We hear her or see the effect she has on objects but that’s all. A disembodied presence, like a ghost moving through a story that’s not really hers.
who threw that book?
The final arc brings everything together for the conclusion. I have to admit, simply seeing Shiki again had a powerful visceral impact on me that I did not expect. I like her as a character but I’m more emotionally attached to Mikiya and my beloved Touko (let’s face it, we all know she’s my type). Moreover, Shiki was front and center in the first arc. As such, I hadn’t realized how much I had missed her until she was there. This is smart direction and editing on the next level.
We find out more about Touko’s past here which I enjoyed if only for seeing Touko as a super-hot teenager and Mikiya is a very good leading man for this type of story. The only flaw I can find is with the antagonist(s). Unfortunately, it’s a big one.
The Garden of Sinners Chapter 5, Paradox Paradigm (maybe I’ll talk about this title someday), introduces Souren Araya as a powerful main antagonist and Cornelius Alba as a secondary villain. They take up quite a bit of room in the story and Araya is pivotal to the plot. You could say he is pretty much the entire driving force behind this movie. And they are both painfully dull.
arrrgh, stop monologuing…it hurts…
Honestly, they feel like they belong to a different narrative. Basic, uninteresting and not even that scary. They are unworthy of the rest of the cast. Where Enjo brought a vulnerability which created interesting conflict and interplay with both Shiki and Mikiya, Araya and Alba are just there. They advance the plot in the least engaging way possible. And their little magical diatribes are muddled and bog everything down rather than add to the story.
I thought Fujino in Chapter 3 was fairly unrealized, but she is brilliant compared to these two. It has led me to believe that the Garden of Sinners is really much better when Shiki is her own worst enemy as they have not been able to create a villain that can stand on equal footing with her.
The second arc also basically explains the events of the first (with a rather unsatisfying the wizard did it sort of solution) which effectively puts an end to the mystery. This means those unpleasant events suddenly hit you with the full brunt of just how sad the story is. That’s not a flaw in any way. It just makes it a more emotionally taxing experience and I had to turn the TV off and take a little break after.
I’m Getting Some Ice Cream!!!
The ending is fine, it’s constrained by the failing of the second arc so I wouldn’t call it amazing, but it definitely has its moments and brings some nice emotional closure. The last scene before the credits (there’s a cute after credits scenes), has soft snow starting to fall, which ties it in with the meteorological theming of the franchise.
This was a long review. You should see my notes; they are all over the place. So, what’s the takeaway. Up until the confrontation with Araya and Alba, I thought the movie was brilliant. I was gearing up to rate it close to perfect and add it to my favourites. These two guys knocked the rating down a full point. The plot is only truly captivating in the first arc but the technical artistry shines throughout and the other characters make the second and third arc worth it, even if it does start to drag a bit at the hour and a half mark.
Despite its failings, this is still a very good movie and I do recommend you watch it. I’m just a little bitter at how close it got to be an amazing movie!
almost there…
Favourite character:  Touko – is this not clear yet?
What this anime taught me: mechanical pencils are called “rocket pencils” in Japan. That information makes me inexplicably happy.
Technically, alcohol is a solution
Suggested drink: A Time Warp
Every time someone refuses to stay dead – take a sip
Every time we see Tomoe’s mom – take a sip
Every time we see a key – take a sip
Every time we see a clock – take a sip
every time we see a key AND a clock – gasp
Every time anyone stabs anything – take a sip
Every time we see a doorknob/handle  – get some water
Every time you spot a repeated scene – take a deep breath
Every time there’s a picture or painting – take a sip
Every time we see a puppet – take a sip
everything’s better with more Touko
Being such a visually stunning movie, I couldn’t resist taking an unreasonable amount of screencaps which you can see here. Be warned, although I have chosen fairly innocent ones for the post, some on my Pinterest board are both graphic and potentially spoilery.
The Garden of Sinners Chapter 5 – Paradox Paradigm or The Saddest Groundhog Day Genre: Existential horror, supernatural, artsy Length: Studio: ufotable Sometimes it’s hard to wrap your head around just being you.
