[Robin wriggles into a comfortable spot, nodding approvingly; noticing the steering wheel, he points toward it] Oscar: I don’t think so, pal. [Robin pouts, pointing at the radio instead] Oscar: Sure-.. cover your ears first though, there’s probably a subwoofer in the back knowing Kobe. [Perplexed, Robin glances at Oscar and pants like a dog] Oscar: [guffaws] It’s a speaker, not a doggy! Go on, try it… [Robin’s eyes widen as said speaker bursts to life with a thumping bass track loud enough to vibrate the seats] Oscar: [yells] Neat, huh?!

(very sports girlie of me, but i think about kobe bryant and gigi at least once a week. and in particular the oldest daughter. who had to live through the grief and pain of her dad and sister dying, but also has to live through the entire WORLD knowing her dad and sister died.

and how people greet you after they know someone you know has passed (especially folks who like…didnt know the deceased well? and its not like a bonding moment but a oooh) and being old enough to understand and feel the urge to be polite back etc)

i know this is a women’s basketball blog, but i started watching the men’s game as a little girl, and i wanted to take a second to remember kobe on his birthday.

happy birthday, kob. you would have been 45 today. you deserved to be 45 today. i’ll never forget watching you and pau get ran through by dirk and the mavs, or seeing you put up 60 your last game. it’s such a privilege to have grown up watching you play. you taught me to love the game. you taught me the meaning of dedication and sacrifice. every injury i’ve ever played through or danced through i owe to you. and you supported the women’s game like no other. you grew the game like no other. you and gigi deserved so much more. we miss you, bean. mamba forever 🐍 ♾️
