I was thinking about this last night. something something knuckles latching on to any feeling of Connection to his friends

not only is he autistic and struggles with the feeling of being Separate from everyone else, but he also grew up entirely alone and isolated. that shit fucks you and how you veiw/form relationships UP. he is very introverted and values his alone time greatly, but he’s lonely a lot

he sees sonic and amy and tails being Friends, just the little things, and it makes him so agitated and upset even if he doesn't realise it consciously. even the little things like sonic wearing the shoes amy got him for his birthday, tails falling asleep on sonic's shoulder, the miniature but fully functional piko piko hammer key chain on amy's phone that tails made. it's all evidence that they're close to one another in a way that knuckles isn't, that he isn't sure he'll ever be able to be

but then one day amy makes him a friendship bracelet and he makes the most ugliest face in response and she's like "oh if you don't like it you don't have to-" but he's already tied it around his wrist and tucked it under the cuff of his glove. tails comes up and insists on making him a reliable, working communicator and for a start he's wary, but a few days later tails sends him a message of a cool looking rock that's apparently a thousand year old meteor, isn't that cool? I heard you like rocks so I thought you'd find this interesting. whenever sonic finds his way up to angel island he starts bringing different food, mostly foreign herbs and spices, or fruits or nuts or whatever, small things that knuckles can add to his meals if he wants or can nibble on if he's hungry

they all do this very offhandedly, like it doesn't mean the fucking world, and after they finally get off his island and leave him in peace he sits by the master emerald and is confused as to why his chest feels so light but he feels like crying

With Maddie’s work I feel like a vet day is a given. The Wachowski boys probably all aren’t used to getting taken care of, so I bet this is a nice change of pace. (Maddie would definitely keep lollipops and superhero bandaids around for whenever the boys come in for a check up)

when hes like. 16ish. tails fucks something up bad. maybe a big project, some weapons he made failed catastrophicly in battle, whatever. he fucks up and he fucks up bad, and knuckles sees the look he gets in his eye. sonic is already there comforting him of course but knuckles can still see that look and so he's like "tails, yes uh. I need your help urgently on. um angel island. I need your scanny things, I need to. scan the ground, I need to dig something but it has to be exactly right otherwise it wont work so I need you and your scanny thing to help"

having a Purpose has always helped knuckles but he's not so great at coming up with them on the spot. but they go up to angel island and knuckles realises really fucking quickly that maybe this isn't a good idea because it's just the two of them and knuckles can't keep an eye on him the entire time. but it turns out okay. tails helps him plot out what he decides on the spot is going to be a whole garden with a greenhouse and storage etc etc. maybe something else, idk, but it's very involved, and the terrain they're planning to build on is tricky, and it takes a fair bit of effort and time to get at all planned out

eventually night starts to fall and knuckles starts building a fire and tails very quietly asks if he could make [specific meal] and knuckles is like yeah sure. you wanna grab some of the ingredients for me, there should be plenty in the garden. tails comes back with what they need and also munching on some fruit and he looks tired, and he's still very quiet, but he doesn't have that look anymore so maybe itll be okay

Would be funny to see Tails proudly showing off his newest invention, a machine gun that shoots napalm bombs, to Sonic, Amy, and Knuckles who are visibly alarmed.
