I was so moved by what a good sister Beth had - then I found said sister's Dear Santa letter as well... and I'm thinking Beth may want to reconsider letting her sister have custody of her doll, even temporarily.

Tonka has been humanely euthanized following the onset of acute pain and severe swelling in his left forelimb last week. He was 46 years old, making him the second-oldest bull African bush elephant in North America. He was the largest land animal in North America. He was also a beautiful, captivating, and good-natured animal. My sincerest condolences go out to his keepers, and to everyone to whom he brought joy, like he brought me every time I saw him.
Rest easy, big buddy.

Japan Pavilion Painting Robot, 1982 World’s Fair, Knoxville, TN. In the waiting area of the Japan Pavilion, the "Painting Robot" skilfully draws patterns chosen by guests. "Japan, no longer a tiny nation struggling to recover from defeat, had created the world’s second-biggest economy, and had just surpassed the United States to become the world’s biggest automaker, becoming a serious rival on the global market for several U.S. products. Highlighting their technological wizardry, Japan created a pavilion offering both a virtual and heart-stoppingly realistic bullet-train ride and a painting robot with a flair for semi-abstract art. It was just a symbol of what Japan had learned to do with robots in factories." – 1982 Worlds Fair in Hindsight, Knoxville History Project.

Just heard the news that Zoo Knoxville has had to move Tonka to hospice care after he developed a swelling in his leg last week and they've given him the highest dosage of pain meds possible. I expect the outcome will be humane euthanasia, but whatever happens, I hope he doesn't linger in pain.
Tonka is the second-oldest male African bush elephant in North America, and the largest land animal on the continent. Zoo Knoxville is my local(ish) major zoo and I've been to see him many times, and he never fails to amaze.
He was supposed to be moving soon to the Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee, like Knoxville's two old ladies did last year.
