Socrates and midwifery(Essay)
Midwifery: The question and answer method of Socrates. A word that compares the work of a midwife to helping the other party to produce logos through dialogue and examining the logos that has been produced, even though he himself cannot actively produce logos.
Socrates (469 B.C.?-399 B.C.) was a Greek philosopher. He is famous for his ``midwifery'' and ``knowledge of ignorance,'' which are discussed here. Saying “Bad law is also a law," he drank the deadly " poison carrot" and went to death with obedience.
In this case, "logos" means "logic = abstract thinking," and Socrates must have given a kind of shock to those who carried out this act. It must be that the foundation on which they (mainly philosophers) were based was also overthrown by Socrates, whose banners were "midwifery" and "knowledge of ignorance."
As mentioned in the quote, "Midwifery" is such that Socrates (the practitioner) cannot find any logos, but for those who receive it, the past self will break down and see the second birth. Will it have a big impact? I think this will work like a "catalyst" in the chemical terminology of later generations. A substance called a catalyst actually chemically reacts with some substances involved in a chemical change, but returns to its original state after a series of reactions.
And about "knowledge of ignorance", this word is probably the technique of "midwifery" itself. For those who think, "There is nothing I don't know, I am omnipotent," Socrates peels off the state of knowledge one by one, like peeling an onion. In fact, Socrates led many young people to their second birth by making them understand that it was an unfounded prejudice... However, it is as expected that he remained calm even when Socrates refuted and was sued by people who hated him, and when it was decided that he would be sentenced to death.

Tommy basically said "the DSMP was good because it was, and still is, loved" and that basically sums up my feelings on the matter too.
#sure you can talk about the controversies about former members#and how the types of people involved in the writing shaped the narrative in ways that are increasingly troubling to look at#but it was also a project that was and still is loved by many of the (to our knowledge) better people involved#and it inspired so many artists and writers and musicians#people made friends through it#it helped people get through the worst parts of lockdown#my opinion of the dsmp for a while now has been pretty bitter. even when i wanted to remember it fondly it was tainted#and i dont think the worst aspects of the story or the ccs should be ignored#but its also so nice to have the opinion of 'yeah. it was good'#despite everything else there was something worthwhile in the dsmp#dsmp#tommyinnit#okay thats enough dsmp posting in 2024 lmao

The more one knows, the more one still has to learn. Ignorance increases in the same proportion as knowledge — or rather, not ignorance, but the knowledge of ignorance.

putting my prediction on record now that the coming decade is going to see the rise of viral-marketed fancy at-home water filtration systems, driving and driven by a drastic reduction in the quality of U.S. tap water (given that we are in a 'replacement era' where our current infrastructure is reaching the end of its lifespan--but isn't being replaced). also guessing that by the 2030s access to drinkable tap water will be a mainstream class issue, with low-income & unstably housed people increasingly forced to rely on expensive bottled water when they can't afford the up-front cost of at-home filtration--and with this being portrayed in media as a "moral failing" and short-sighted "choice," rather than a basic failure of our political & economic systems. really hope i'm just being alarmist, but plenty of this already happens in other countries, and the U.S. is in a state of decline, so. here's praying this post ages into irrelevance. timestamped April 2023
#apollo don't fucking touch this one#serious post#not a shitpost#hope i forget about this post and have no reason to ever look back on it one day#fyi i'm aware that access to potable water is already a major issue in parts of the U.S. yes i know flint michigan exists#i'm saying that this issue is going to GROW unless local & federal governments work together to fix it.#so it's a matter of if we trust them to fix it. And well--do you?#what are the chances the government just denies there's a problem until the water actually turns brown#at which point it's already been common knowledge for years and people have just become resigned and that's our new normal#i'm mean come on. how many of us already believe that we're being exposed to dangerous pollutants we don't know about and can't avoid#like that's pretty much just part of being a modern consumer. accepting that companies will happily endanger your life for a few pennies#and the most you'll get is like a $50 gift card as part of a class action rebate 20 years down the line#probably the history books will look back on Flint as a warning and a harbinger that went ignored#luxury condos will advertise their built-in top-of-the-line filtration systems--live here and you can drink water straight from your tap!#watch the elite professional class putting $700 dyson water filtration systems on their wedding registry#while the rest of us figure out how to fit water delivery into our grocery budget while putting 90% of our paycheck towards rent#also eggs are $15

I saw this whole long thread of people hand-wringing about "anti-intellectuals" on tiktok and how scary it is that they're believing sourceless claims other people on tiktok tell them, because they claim they have the same chance of being correct as anything that "science says."
and said hand-wringers were waxing poetic about the scientific method and replicability and how everything that's published in an academic journal is guaranteed to be true and correct because of a little thing called peer review whereby scientists (naturally a petty and pedantic people) are encouraged to tear each other's conclusions apart.
and I just have to say. if you believe (in the midst of a major replicability crisis amongst scientific journals, no less) that everything published in a scientific journal is de facto factual or trustworthy, and if you believe that peer review of all things is a process that is guaranteed to prevent papers with anything from flaws in experimental design to full-blown fraud from going to print (as if publishers don't have a literal profit motive to publish studies that yield novel, startling conclusions),
then you are 100% as "anti-intellectual," foolish, & averse to thinking for yourself as the tiktokers you're making fun of. actually I think I like you less. at least their ideas might be bizarre enough to be interesting
#while being wholly ignorant of sociology of science & the social and economic factors that go into scientific knowledge-production#is very common and boring

I hesitate to say pro-lifers have been dropping the ball on this, per se, but it seems to me we could be highlighting the grossly inappropriate hospital miscarriage care (or lack thereof) that has resulted from a pro-abortion culture, and the concerted effort within the medical profession to turn victims of miscarriage into Schroedinger's Baby. "It's only worth grieving over if the mother is grieving, so don't act like grief is the default reaction." Meanwhile, the quietly grieving mother is treated by hospital staff like her highly medicalized miscarriage is a routine procedure, nothing is wrong, no one has died, and she's not a mother.
#the horror stories I have read#about the treatment they received from doctors even for 2nd trimester miscarriages#like they were having a joint reduced or a tooth pulled#and the fact that none of them were offered any kind of burial service#pro-life#respublica#x#just another example of how our increased knowledge should optimize care but our willful ignorance degrades it instead

one of my favorite scenes in all of word of honor is episode 14 at exactly the 2min mark where ye baiyi shows up and is like "you're my idiot students idiot stupid idiocity is generational anyway strip my Immortal Daddy sense tells me you ill as fuck" and zhou zishu is like "you want me to STRIP in the middle of the HOTEL LOBBY???" and YBY is like, "god millennials these days" and then they fight and YBY rips a piece of ZZS's undershirt off and the camera pans to it gently fluttering in the wind like it's the last love letter of a jane austen char got from their beloved with news they died in the war as they gaze over the cliffside over the stormy ocean and then BAM Wen KeXing shows up like a jerry springer guest from the side door and is like "UNHAND MY BELOVED THE REASON MY HEART BEATS EACH MORNING WHEN THE SUN RISES" and catches ZZS by his tiny waist to dramatic spin for extra fruit flavor and YBY is like "who the fuck invited this twink?" and then they fight and it explodes a river and shit and ZZS is like "omg you're gonna wake up the whole neighborhood!!" and YBY is like "I'm literally to Daddy to be dealing with this shit just strip so I can diagnose your martial arts cancer" and WKX is like "MY BABY HAS CANCER???" and tries to strip ZZS himself and ZZS is like "what in the fucking 90s shojo manga by Yu Watase Fushigi Yugi shit is this we're in a CLAMP manga stop pulling at my clothes!!!!" and then just to be extra dramatic and Gay (tm) ZZS rips open his own shirt to reveal *gasp* three nipples nails of martial arts cancer and YBY is just like "damn bae you fucked" and WKX has a complete Gay Breakdown

my personal headcanon is the vees were unremarkable nobodies when they were alive. i just love it as a thematic throughline for them. they love to let the public of hell speculate on them being famed and acclaimed since before death, but the the truth is they were a d-list failed influencer that got by on cheap controversey and scamming, a broke junkie who burned every shaky bridge he ever had, and a worn-out broadcast production assistant with more rejected auditions and tossed out script pitches than he could count. nobody missed them when they were gone, nobody cared who they were until they were dead.
#because villains who didn't start off supremely powerful are more interesting to me#vees#it's not that they CAN'T be better. or that they're simply ignorant of the ways they fuck up others lives#they actually all do have that knowledge of being the underdog. and it's made them all the more shitty#because they never want to be those people again#narratives about people who make each other worse <3#to be clear they were still shitty people in life. manipulative. consumed by greed and envy. all their individual flaws etc etc#but hell made them into the absolute worst versions of themselves#of course what their Worst Self is and the journey/length of time/initial reaction to being in hell varies#like val sees hell as a continuation of the things happening in life. just w/ the power dynamics always privileging him#it's the same drugs and violence. except the violence isn't just survival anymore but the chance to indulge his deeply sadistic desires#vox has completely dissociated from his time alive. that person is dead and he's reinvented himself 1000 times over since then#90% of the time he has those memory files shoveled into a hidden directory#he refuses to acknowledge that he's still haunted by some of the same insecurities from almost a century ago#val doesn't necessarily see his living self in a fond light but he does see that person as fundamentally him#velvette thinks life was full of people who weren't her demographic but fortunately that's been fixed by sinners!#they just couldn't Get Her and that was all their faults#the primary way they view their past selves can be summed up as: scorn (vox) apathy (valentino) and in denial (velvette)#sorry the bulk of the post was in the tags. i will be doing this again#the scorn is the coping mechanism for shame. of course
