Knitting abbreviations!
Picture taken of a page from the Anticraft book. That way, I will have this to reference off even after I return it.

Pattern dropped today!! I’m the only set of hands who has tested it, so I’m starting it off at $2.50 until its fully ironed out. I just really wanted to get this out early enough for people to make bags for Halloween, so I hope you can forgive me!

Ravelry
This is a combo knitting+crochet pattern, but only the handle and the ribs are crocheted. I think these would do great as trick-or-treat bags; you get to watch them fill out as they fill up with candy! I plan on using mine to harvest peas and beans all autumn 🥰
I couldn’t NOT do a Cinderella variant, right?

Back when I worked at a craft store I ended up becoming the knitting teacher after the previous one quit and like… I knew how to knit and had made a decent number of different scarves and like 2 hats. But then every 2-3 months I would have to make samples of whatever thing corporate decided we were doing for the next batch of classes. All this stuff I'd never seen before. Most of it was just making a sample swatch, like a 5x5 square or whatever to show off some pattern like "ooh, for May and June you can learn bamboo stitch". Also I had to use whatever materials they said because they were using it to try to sell product. So I made a sock (first and only one I've ever made) out of velvet yarn. The thing was a fuckin' slipper! Like I have cold feet but I put that on and was instantly sweating it was that thick! But then they started carrying loopy yarn.
God I fucking hated loopy yarn. It was weird to figure out what was knit and what was purl with this stuff and then more people took the classes with the loopy yarn than the regular knitting classes because the loopy yarn is marketed as being super easy because you can do it by hand and you don't need tools and you can do a blanket in no time! I don't remember how to do it now because I never used it outside of work because I hate it. It's pretty much all chunky stuff like that and if the little thread holding it into a loop breaks then it doesn't work like intended and also like how am I supposed to do advanced stuff with this? Probably not supposed to be able to cable with it, but ugh.
Anyways, I basically just watched youtube videos on the clock while making these samples to learn how to do all this stuff corporate wanted me to do. I still don't know how to read a chart or do color work other than stripes, but I can read the k12(yo, p2, k1)k12 stuff. So like sorry I can't help you, OP, but maybe just pick a pattern that only has 1-2 things you don't know at a time and slowly build up from there even if the pattern isn't exactly what you want? And swear a lot, that helps. My first hat was a pattern that was way too ambitious for me, I had to restart it like a dozen times and then it wasn't the right size. It was fueled by rage by the time it was done.

Note: You don't have to know how to make anything fancy. Just do you know the basics well enough to at least get started?

honestly yeah, fiber arts is magic. you cast spell of warm gloves, spell of nice hat, spell of stuffed animal.
material component: yarn
wand: single hooked wand or double pointed wands, depending on caster's preference
mechanical component: specific motions repeated in a particular pattern
time component: a while
look seriously the first step in a knitting recipe is "cast on", and then it's a bunch of letters and numbers incomprehensible to anyone not versed in the arcane art. that's a spellbook. yes it's a book of knitting patterns but also. it's a spell book.
#original#knitting#crochet#fiber arts#also continuing my habit of calling everything recipes lol#a recipe is a set of instructions telling you how to turn materials into objects#sometimes the result is food. sometimes it is clothes#(I suspect this may be rooted in minecraft crafting recipes)#but yeah I call sewing patterns 'clothing recipes' also

I'm really surprised how many young fiber art people don't know that they can get pattern books from their local library. So as a PSA:
Your local public library has pattern books! They have crochet, knitting, weaving, and quilting pattern books! If they don't have the book you want, or the craft you want, you can ask for us to get it for you! It's free!

I'd like to introduce to everyone this horrid thing I created about a year ago but haven't shown many people yet (probably for the best).
This is Baby. AKA The Monster. AKA Sight Tremendous and Abhorred, AKA Vile Insect, AKA A Thing Such As Even Dante Could Not Have Conceived, etc, etc. It's made from bits of scrap fabric I scrounged from various sources and is roughly the size of a human toddler. Its design is based on Mary Shelly's original descriptions of Frankenstein's creature.
But that's not all! Behold!
You can dissect this little abomination to reveal a full set of crocheted, knitted, and scrap fabric organs, all hand-stitched by yours truly!
It has a heart, stomach, lungs, liver, small and large intestine, kidneys, bladder, and, of course, a brain! So it can ponder the horrors of its own existence!
I used this pattern by Less Than Three for the heart. I ended up felting it because I screwed up most of the stitches (I was relatively new to crochet at the time). The result was a bit of a blobby mess, but oh well.
So yeah. This thing lives in my house now (my family hates it). I have yet to reap the full consequences of my hubris.

I arrive at the yarn store and grab a skein off the shelf, the exact same brand, type, weight and color of the one I bought a week ago. Everyone in the store immediately knows that I miscalculated the amount of yarn I'd need for a project. They start booing at me. They are throwing crocheted tomatoes at me. The old lady giving knitting lessons in the corner is shaking her head. She had such high hopes for me. The cashier spits at me when I pay for it.
#aaaaand scene. this is a dramatic reenactment of what my brain is sure should happen.#mogologue#knitting#crocheting#crafts#yarn crafts
