TRIUMPH over TAPESTRY
One of the big blessings of the 2024 Kickstarter was getting to work more with tapestry blanket design. These cotton blankets are beautiful and cozy, and give me a lot of freedom as a designer.
The downside is, since I'm not the one programming them into the loom or weaving them, it can be slow and frustrating sometimes. I often don't know how my design or its colours will translate to tapestry until I receive the finished piece. Alas for me, it's just also really frigging cool to see how they manage to combine specific coloured threads to create such complicated images, so I persist.

That's not the final design of the Celtic fish blanket, btw. When I found that one green that absolutely pops, I moved it to the focus of the pattern.
Tumblr media
...For that colourway, that is. There are three.
So yeah! I finally got it done! I have bashed away at these designs until I felt really happy with them.

Lily of the Valley Tapestry Blanket
The "Celtic Sea" design is an adaptation of a Jugendstil pattern, part of the 1890-1910 German movement that parallelled Art Nouveau. The lily pattern is Art Nouveau itself, adapted from an 1896 ceramic tile pattern. And I designed the "Compass Star" pattern on my own, because I love geometric designs.

i tried to make it very personal to her because she deserves things that show how cool she is :)))) @groovy-central you’re the bestest ever ilysm i hope you like it
nerd details under cut
i used a split stitch for most of it, back stitch for the flowers because they were smaller curves and that’s difficult to do with split stitch lol
this took me the span of a few weeks but total work time probably like 3 days??? it was literally so fun i love upcycling clothes i’m so doing more of this in the future

Beginner
Intermediate
Advanced
Self-taught one work-in-progress at a time so that there’s some beginner stuff I don’t know and advanced stuff that I do know and I will forever be making silly beginner mistakes in complex projects that I’ll probably never complete :)

[sidles up to you in a dark parking lot]
Hey. Do you want elbow patches. Yeah I noticed the elbows of your sweater are worn through, I can fix that for you. I got tapestry yarn, loads of it, all different colours. Price? Depends on what you're offering. Homemade cookies? Yeah, I can work with that. Bring 'em tomorrow, same time, same place. Love you too, man. Love you too.

Wednesday, November 29.
You reap what you sew.
Never have truer words been spoken. But they come as good news for Tumblr's sewing community, however, who have been sewing some absolute delights. Some real œuvres d'art. Some winner-winner chicken dinners.
As luck would have it, #sewing is trending. And it's trending right now, so we have reaped a selection of these very dinners for your eyes only. We have then asked ourselves just what did we do to deserve y'all, and your resplendent talents.

I got something cool from another Etsy shop recently! Which is, the world's tiniest* weaving heddle:
*probably a slight exaggeration
Tumblr media
I've wanted to explore weaving lately, but don't have the money or space that you'd need for a tabletop loom. So I knew I wanted a backstrap loom setup, where you stretch your weaving between a distant anchor point (in this case, it's pinned to my lap desk) and like, well... a strap that goes around your back, basically.
(Normally the perfect solution for this is tablet weaving, which is even easier to get the tools for. Unfortunately, it requires MORE BRAIN. So I'm taking the easy route here.)
So my heddle and shuttle are from TheDancingGoats, an Etsy shop that specializes in reproduction ancient tools.
And what do you know... the shop sponsored Long Thread Media on Youtube, who did a whole tutorial on how to use them:

Woke up early and finished the quilting. I am pretty happy with how it turned out. I like the unevenness and the organic quality of the orange peel. I did it all free hand on my average singer patchwork machine.
Now i just need to do the binding and it'll be finished. I've decided on this really soft dark denim looking fabric that I have.
Need to get ready for the Golden Christmas Market though so I'll have to work on it later.
