I never posted my market bag pattern? Huh. The crochet bottom makes it extra sturdy, and you can tuck things into the handle like chapstick or rolled up cash 👍🏻

honestly yeah, fiber arts is magic. you cast spell of warm gloves, spell of nice hat, spell of stuffed animal.
material component: yarn
wand: single hooked wand or double pointed wands, depending on caster's preference
mechanical component: specific motions repeated in a particular pattern
time component: a while
look seriously the first step in a knitting recipe is "cast on", and then it's a bunch of letters and numbers incomprehensible to anyone not versed in the arcane art. that's a spellbook. yes it's a book of knitting patterns but also. it's a spell book.
#original#knitting#crochet#fiber arts#also continuing my habit of calling everything recipes lol#a recipe is a set of instructions telling you how to turn materials into objects#sometimes the result is food. sometimes it is clothes#(I suspect this may be rooted in minecraft crafting recipes)#but yeah I call sewing patterns 'clothing recipes' also

The National Park Service has released crochet/knit patterns! The triops is my favorite.
Here's their Ravelry:
But wait there's more if Ravelry isn't your thing:

Listen I am not going to name anyone specifically, but pattern makers need to talk to one (1) fat person before they can post their patterns online.
I am so sick of finding a cute pattern, getting all the supplies, checking my gage, and starting to knit, only to find that my sleeves are a foot longer than a normal human because the pattern maker just multiplied all their numbers by 10 when they sized it up. I can't believe I have to say this but, just because my ass is fat does not mean my arms go down to my knees???

It's kinda funny when someone sees me unravel a fiber project either partially or completely, and gets distressed on my behalf and I have to go "No no no, it's part of the process! You gotta trust the process."
#diaryposting#fiber crafts#handcrafts#crochet#knitting#my process includes so much frogging and mom is always bit distressed when she sees it#even though I have explained it part of how I design most of the stuff I make#like the sock pattern I made included SO. MUCH. FROGGING. at the beginning#I think it might be partially because of aphantasia and I need to actually see if something works because I can't visualize anything#and frogging is no different to me than drawing something and going 'Oh that's not going to works' then erasing and redrawing

Another bonus to learning a fiber art is being able to speak to others in a Lovecraftian language that nobody else understands...
...and also being able to read things like THIS:
#art#crochet#fiber art#described images#image description in alt#used a crochet pattern for this because it's just INSANE#see i can recognize some of these stitch markings but i haven't done them all yet#i actually kind of prefer the diagram pattern because it actually shows you the shape and the way stitches compliment the piece#with a 'normal' pattern (e.g. 1 dc in fifth ch from hook ch 2 4 dc) i understand it sure but. it isn't the same.#i was reading somebodys recommendations for tapestry yarn and understood all the abbreviations and what they mean#plus i feel like diagrams can be a great way to teach you not only how stitches look but how they contribute to the larger piece#one of my crochet proficiency goals is to be able to look at a piece and know instantly what made it#*cue me at the store analyzing a crochet piece so i can replicate it for 5× the cost*#if you're selling a crocheted piece for like $20 then it's my imperative to replicate it and not buy it 🫡#i think that has the same moral implication as like... 'proplifting'#did crochet as the example because thats what i do as a fiber art. if theres a similar thing for knit/weave/ect then DROP IT BELOW I BEG YO#i want to learn all the lovecraftian languages of the fiber artists <3#i feel like describing the image in exactly what stitch marking indicates what would have been too much so hopefully the explanation as to..#...what the diagram DOES and how it visually indicates a pattern was helpful <3

Knitting.
This is a public service announcement.
Well, this is sort of a public service announcement. It's an announcement serving the great and the good of the #knitting public, to be precise. If this public includes your fine self, then boy, have we got news for you.
Knitting is trending. Knitting is up there, in fact. So we are putting the usual on the backburner for today: no Pedro Pascal, no farmcore, no Riverdale, no Dimension 20, no David Tennant, no The Sims 4, and no dark f*cking academia. This one is all about you: you good folk with your yarn in one hand and needles in the other. For today is your day, your moment in the sun.
However you chose to celebrate is very much at your discretion, but we would hope you do so by doing what you do best, and, say, knit the pink trending icon or something. If you are a knitter not yet in Tumblr's vast community of cuddly autumnal creators, or if you simply appreciate this wonderful craft, welcome. Make yourself at home.

Knitting a freehand bag and started wondering how often people even use patterns, anyway. So--how often do you use a pattern when you make things ? This include knitting/crochet/sewing/weaving/nalbinding/bobbin lace/tatting/etc but also things like woodworking, cooking, and baking. If you want to just pick the thing you do most often that's fine.
I personally do not use patterns as I find them far more confusing than just figuring out the construction of an item and simply making it. I do very occasionally browse ravelry for inspiration but have downloaded maybe 2. In the 5 or so years since I joined. And have followed exactly 1, which I modified every single aspect of. In my defense, dyslexia.
#poll#knitting#crochet#weaving#tatting#sewing#quilting#nalbinding#bobbin lace#cooking#baking#theres just SO MANY patterns out there and i kind of dont understand why... who is using them ???#they are so hard to follow even when written well#i get that thats dyslexia talking and not true for most people but it still baffles me#i also dont follow cooking/baking recipes but in a different way#the issue for crafting patterns is that i cant read and so i cant figure out what the hell im supposed to do#but recipes are usually lists and dont have tons of abbreviations and dozens of steps#so i can kind of read recipes but i just like doing my own thing and also have been burned by recipes before#so even if i try following the recipe as hard as possible i will inevitably change some things#like what about the whimsy. also i will use a butter wash after taking this out of the oven i dont care that it says eggs#and while i dont do legos anymore i was the same with that too. we got a kit once and my sister loved following each step#oh my god. the worst. i would covertly make other things with the remaining pieces while she assembled the thing#i do think that were i not dyslexic i would still not follow patterns#like i said i just prefer to do my own thing most of the time
