help even with a migraine I canā€™t help but critique military strategy in dumb fantasy movies Iā€™m watching to distract me from the migraine
I am all of 3 minutes into Damsel on Netflix and so far Iā€™m shocked these guys have managed to live through like, ordinary life, before they went off to fight this dragon in the most idiotic way possible

I want to talk about a question that has been raised already in this post (not by me):Ā https://www.tumblr.com/fictionadventurer/706718915447963648/its-so-interesting-to-me-that-the-hero-saves-the?source=share
A post I had reblogged - but my reblog/answer got drowned and ignored among everything else (again, I do not know why but Tumblr seems determined to make my posts disappear from the searches). So I will make a separate post to bring forward a bit more light on the topic.
The question is: TheĀ ā€œarchetypeā€ andĀ ā€œstereotypeā€ of the fairytale asĀ ā€œ a prince charming or a knight on a beautiful horse saves a damsel trapped in a tower and guarded by the dragonā€. It is in many peopleā€™s mind one of theĀ ā€œbasicā€ of fairytales, and when you want to write a fairytale pastiche it is the scenario that comes first in peopleā€™s minds.
However... When you look at the fairytales of the brothers Grimm, or at traditional Norwegian fairytales, or at Andersenā€™s... you realize this scenario is not at all typical or recurring in fairytales. So where does this idea comes from?
The average person answer will be either 1) It is Disney that popularized it, with their Sleeping Beauty for example or 2) This is a projection of medieval romances and chilvary tales onto the genre of the fairytales. Both explanations which are true, indeed... But they are missing a key element that is the true solution to theĀ ā€œmysteryā€.
French fairytales. An entire century of French fairytales written by a dozen of different authors (or rather two dozens). Everybody knows Perrault (whose tales also do not fit the archetype described above), but the truth is that all the other authors of fairytales of theĀ ā€œcentury of fairy talesā€ in France used and re-used this formula again and again. The French literary fairytale IS the fairytale where knights in shining armors kill dragons, the French literary fairytales ARE the fairytales where the prince charming has to rescue the damsel in distress.
To merely take madame dā€™Aulnoy, theĀ ā€œmotherā€ of French fairytales and Perraultā€™s equally famous co-writer, we have:
# The Yellow Dwarf, where the King of the Gold Mines (helped by a mermaid) has to rescue his wife from the titular Yellow Dwarf who imprisoned her in a castle of burning steel.
# In Babiole (more of a mock-fairytale), the main prince of the story has to rescue his beloved from a giant bottle guarded by giants and dragons.
# In The Benevolent Frog, a king has to rescue both his wife and daughter from the underground lair of the Lion-Fairy. Later, the prince to be wedded to the princess has to save her from a dragon trying to eat her.Ā
# In The Pigeon and the Dove, a prince has to save a princess from a tower of diamond in which a giant imprisoned her.Ā
And thatā€™s just a few of her stories. Mind you, she also wrote numerous stories where it is the princess or the woman that goes to rescue her lover/prince, but she also wrote the classical stories ofĀ ā€œthe prince in shining armor rescues the damsel in distressā€ - a scenario that will be taken back for a whole century by all the other fairytale writers of France.
So no, it is not a scenario taken out of a different genre and projectedĀ ā€œby mistakeā€ on fairytales. Rather it is a key part of the history of fairytales - but given people do not remember the wholeĀ ā€œFrenchā€ part of the history of fairytales, they are confused as to where this scenario comes from.

even rougher concept to go with akechi's, this is my first pass at sumire's den. idk if ill keep it as a Grand Foyer but despite her name being violet shes very much represented by yknow. Royal things. white and gold and vibrant red. along with her princess in a tower thing she has going on i think at least at first especially her den would be representative of that, along with kasumi standing high above her.
i havent decided whether sumire is going to go from princess to knight or dragon. or both. i think it might be fun if she and akechi both got to be dragon knights. for different reasons

there's still a day left on this poll, but it looks like there's a clear winner so I'm going to put into rotation since i put in the last "detective, murderer, victim" for this fmk roll. Once the "clothes, hairstyle, palette" polls roll through, i'll add the 2nd place winner to the lineup.

Me covering my face as I write a knight implicitly(???) sorta falling in love with a dragon. (Note: the dragon isn't simply a mindless beast/creature here.)
It also doesn't help that these characters are based of two human ocs that are in a relationship.
