where was that thing about knife theory? because i need it. like spoons are great for energy levels. but knife theory needs to be developed more and used more in wider community. and not just in the punk way of fighting off ableists.

i mean like, knives bro. like a panic attack is a knife. a flashback is a knife. it’s not something you collect and lose/spend; it’s something that stabs you, hurts you.

injury playing up? knife.

illness flaring up? knife.

automatic negative thoughts? knives.

strong emotions eating at you? knives.

feeling rejection? knife.

rumination? knife stuck.

triggered? bleeding.

a knife can also be like a big looming threat, or a scary challenge in the day/week/month.

nervous before interview? knife.

see the thing about knife theory is that it is necessary in a different way to spoon theory. something that zaps energy leaves you without spoons, and you’re lost.

but sometimes disability doesn’t just drain energy but hurts, and you have to recognise that. many times i thought resting after a flashback would help, and i aided my energy levels but the mental damage and emotional distress/drainage was still there. you need to treat it as a danger, and tend to yourself; acknowledge the pain even if the knife will never come out. 🌹🌹

Yessss. All of the above. The knives theory helped me conceptualize what it felt when I ran out of spoons but had to get out of the knives to force myself through an activity anyway. Then, upon end of activity, I collapse and am useless for days. The knives cut deep when I used them to finish that activity. But people often don't see the consequences of what it's like to run out of spoons and be forced into taking the knives instead. They just assume I am lying about my energy needs when in all actuality, I'm actually undercounting my needs. I got out the knives because I was not caring for my body properly. Instead, I made finishing the activity/dong-x-or-y-thing more important than my health. The consequences of that is collapse, which could end with me in the hospital.

This is a concept I WISH doctors or really any healthcare worker and social worker understood. Many tell me that I need to "exercise to get better" and that I should do inpatient physical therapy and really push my body to learn to walk again.

But what would that do?

That would use up months of spoons, and I'd be forced to use the knives, which cuts deep into my health. Every time I pushed myself into knife categories?

I've ended up in the hospital in a very, very bad way.

Some of us cannot do x or y thing. Sometimes we have an energy-limiting disease that makes certain types of exercise harmful to do. More exercise will not cure me. It will act as a knife and bleed me dry, to the point I'm hospitalized.

I wish more folks understood this.

I know we talk a lot about keep jumping on boxes, but I'm honestly so grateful for Joe hills' knife theory; a variation on spoon theory that says once you're out of spoons, you can choose to take knives instead in the knowledge that it will hurt later. and the number of times I've told myself 'ok let's take the knives' is so high that I've found it really helps to acknowledge it. Tilla's circus act

Blitz doesn't move on muscle here.

The episode sets up alot of parallels in the ways Millie gets Blitz, and how she's comfort him in this episode.

She the one to give him back his mum's brooch.

She tries to pass on her own Mum's advice.

And is Millie give him a hug and holds his hand when he's upset. She set up to remind him of his mum in this episode.

But looks at what she does in their first fight/ interview process 😁. All the knives and blades..

Blitz uses a very showy spin to dodge. And guides her knife into hitting the wood of the chair back.

He's extremely confident and comfortable doing this.

He uses somersaults to get more space when needed.

Like he's extremely used to putting on a show while doing so.

He uses simple disarms on Millie, the sort you sort you might have taught a child.

There's something about this imp lady throwing knives at him that's making Blitz smile through a majority of this fight.

Millie even uses Blitz as a support to do a wallwalk cartwheel out of his hold. And Blitz just lets her.

Till their both enjoying the sparring match. 😁

When she grabs the darts Blitz reaction like it's expected.

And he's really happy about it.

He uses a back spring handstand into a flip to dodge the rest of them.

When he offers his hand; and she goes for another knife, he carefully keeps his stance and doesn't blink.

Like it's a lesson that got drilled into by someone he trusts, and always wanted to help out.

It was always interesting that Blitz and Barbie can fight using their Circus skills; but Fizz can't.

He's a juggler and acrobat, but can't fight for toffee.

Barbie Wire has the same easy way for dealing with knives in a fight.

I think it's really likely that Tilda's act was knife thrower and combate demonstrator.

As Millie says there's a lot imp assassins in Wrath. Might as well find a different use for those skills you're good at, and capitalise.

We know Cash's job was Ring Master, they don't normally do anything. Just announced the acts, and hype at the crowd. (Management never really dose alot do they lol).

We don't see who the knife thrower is at the circus, but lot of time is spent on the knife they throw.

This where knife theory comes in. Knives can accomplish most of the things that spoons can accomplish but they're not as efficient as it and they tears me up inside. When I run out of spoons, I have to pull knives. And then I have to collapse for way longer to recover.

One thing I don't think the Spoon metaphor has helped able-bodied people understand is that you can overdraw.

Generally, for most conditions, running out of spoons doesn't mean you collapse, doesn't produce an effect they can actually see. What it means is that you run on life support, quite possibly unsafely, until you get to a safe place and can stop. But you'll owe those spoons back, with interest. You'll have hurt yourself to do it.

Sometimes I hang out with a friend and they'll be like, wow, I'm really glad you had a good day. And I have to decide whether to make them feel bad by explaining that in fact they did not catch me on a good day, and tomorrow will probably be bad. I just made choices.

I have been wanting to make a piece like this for a while! Inspired by some of my favorite theories for Elriel! Elain describes her mating bond as a thread tied to a rib. Helion and Lucien can both physically see threads of spells, and I always found it interesting that Lucien could literally see his mating bond to Elain, and describes it as a thread.

With the addition of HoFaS, the knowledge that Truth-Teller can unmake things and the Cauldron has been corrupted, I love the idea that they will be able to use the knife to cut the thread!

I am still so new to art. I am aware there are things I am not very good at and may never improve with the little time I have to dedicate to it. I wanted to keep it in greyscale both to give it a Jack and Sally vibe for October but also to focus on improving my basics before adding color. I wound up really liking the black and white!

Have I told y’all about my husband’s Fork Theory?  If I did already, pretend I didn’t, I’m an old.

So the Spoon Theory is a fundamental metaphor used often in the chronic pain/chronic illness communities to explain to non-spoonies why life is harder for them. It’s super useful and we use that all the time. But it has a corollary.  You know the phrase, “Stick a fork in me, I’m done,” right? Well, Fork Theory is that one has a Fork Limit, that is, you can probably cope okay with one fork stuck in you, maybe two or three, but at some point you will lose your shit if one more fork happens.  A fork could range from being hungry or having to pee to getting a new bill or a new diagnosis of illness. There are lots of different sizes of forks, and volume vs. quantity means that the fork limit is not absolute. I might be able to deal with 20 tiny little escargot fork annoyances, such as a hangnail or slightly suboptimal pants, but not even one “you poked my trigger on purpose because you think it’s fun to see me melt down” pitchfork.

This is super relevant for neurodivergent folk. Like, you might be able to deal with your feet being cold or a tag, but not both. Hubby describes the situation as “It may seem weird that I just get up and leave the conversation to go to the bathroom, but you just dumped a new financial burden on me and I already had to pee, and going to the bathroom is the fork I can get rid of the fastest.”
