Do you think Kaname actually feels bad or remorse for what he did to Zero? I feel like there was supposed to be a plot line that was supposed to be resolved towards the last few chapters but it was dropped and Hino just summed up the problem with "It's for Yuuki so it doesn't matter."

Hey! This is such a nice ask to be honest, and I've been wondering about this for a long time.

Hino is a mysterious person and everything has a deeper meaning in VK.

I think that Kaname, even tho he's secretive and doesn’t show us many emotions, does feel a bit bad for Zero.

He released Shizuka to kill Zero's family for one reason, to protect Yuuki and make Zero a weapon. That's all he cared about.

During the cross academy days, he was often rude and unpleasant towards Zero, jealous of him and annoyed when Zero disobeyed him.

This all should convince us to think that Zero is just another pawn for him, no?

Well not for me...

Now, I'm a KaZe shipper, and I like both Zero and Kaname as individuals, so I'll try to keep it real.

Kaname is a depressed person who feels guilty about his existence, he hates himself, and I think this might have influenced his feelings toward Zero.

He felt not enough for Yuuki, he tried his best to protect the humans back then, (thousands of years ago) and in overall he despised purebloods.

He is actually a kind person and I do think he cares about Zero even a little.

This was Kaname telling Takuma what he did to Zero. If that’s not remorse on his face, I don’t know what is…

Rido called him a monster and Kaname didn’t disagree…

He lived for a long time, he was betrayed by humans, and it made him tired.

But he remained kind, even if he only slightly opened up to certain people.

Just look at his smile <3

As I said, he felt not enough, he felt guilty for existing, and I think this also had an influence on his feelings towards Zero.

So I do believe he feels a little bad for how he treated Zero. He did what he felt he had to do in order to protect his beloved Yuuki, no matter how gruesome.

Chapter Two: Crimson Tensions

The night stretched on, shadows lengthening across the stone corridors of Cross Academy. The moon cast a pale glow through tall windows as her steps echoed softly beside Zero’s. Though their patrol had ended, neither seemed ready to return to their dorms.

The rose and its ominous note still lingered in her mind, nagging at her thoughts despite her efforts to dismiss it. Who had left it? And why?

Zero walked a step ahead, his hand resting near the grip of his gun. His expression was as guarded as ever, but the tension radiating off him was impossible to ignore.

“You’re still thinking about that rose,” Zero said without looking at her.

She blinked, surprised he had spoken her thoughts aloud. “It’s hard not to. Someone went to a lot of effort to make sure I saw it.”

“It’s more than just a prank,” Zero muttered darkly. “Whoever’s playing games needs to be stopped.”

They reached the entrance to the dormitory, and the cold night air swept around them. Her breath clouded in the chill, but she couldn’t shake the heat rising under her skin at the intensity of Zero’s words.

Before she could respond, movement near the Moon Dormitory caught her attention. Kaname Kuran stood near the entrance, his figure bathed in moonlight. His presence was striking, calm, and composed as always, though something in his gaze sharpened when he saw her.

“A late patrol?” Kaname's voice was smooth as silk, his eyes flicking between her and Zero. “I hope it’s been uneventful.”

Zero’s jaw tightened. “Uneventful enough.”

She cleared her throat, stepping between them. “We’re done for the night.”

Kaname’s gaze lingered on her for a fraction longer than necessary. “Be careful. The academy isn’t as safe as it once was.”

Her lips pressed together, but she forced a nod. “Thank you for the warning, Kaname.”

Zero scoffed quietly, but Kaname ignored him.

“Goodnight,” Kaname murmured, his gaze lingering before he turned back toward the Moon Dormitory.

Zero watched him go before muttering under his breath, “He’s always got to be the center of attention.”

The next morning, the academy stirred awake slowly. After a long night on patrol, exhaustion weighed heavily on her, but duty called.

In the shared restroom, the steam from the running shower fogged the mirrors, and she relished the moment of peace. As she washed her face, the door creaked open behind her.

She glanced up, startled to see Zero enter casually, a towel slung over his shoulder and his hair still messy from sleep.

“What are you doing?” she asked incredulously, turning to face him.

Zero raised an eyebrow. “Getting ready. What does it look like?”

Her jaw dropped as he moved toward the shower stalls without a second thought. “You couldn’t wait five minutes?”

He shrugged nonchalantly. “There’s nothing I haven’t seen before.”

Her face heated, and she turned on her heel. “What do you mean?!” she said annoyed, storming toward the door. “You’re impossible.”

Behind her, she heard the sound of running water and Zero’s quiet chuckle. “See you in class.”

Later that evening, shadows crept across the academy grounds once more. The reader made her way through the quiet pathways, a feeling of unease settling in her chest. The note from the night before still lingered in her thoughts, and despite her best efforts, the creeping sensation of being watched gnawed at her senses.

Unknown to her, two sets of eyes followed her movements—one from the cover of trees near the Moon Dormitory, the other from the rooftops above.

Kaname Kuran stood quietly among the shadows, his gaze unwavering as he tracked her path across the grounds. His crimson eyes gleamed faintly, betraying none of the turmoil beneath his calm exterior.

At the same time, Zero Kiryu knelt near the edge of a rooftop, his gun resting loosely in his hand. His sharp gaze never left her form, even as conflicting emotions warred within him.

Neither of them spoke, but their silent rivalry was palpable even across the distance. Both men were driven by forces they couldn’t control—one by the desire to protect, the other by something darker, more possessive.

And neither had any intention of backing down.

Zero Kiryu- His soft, cute side (Headcanon)

A/N: Hereby I will cover Zero, as the request was for both the Kiryu twins. You can find the one for Ichiru here.

-As a little boy he used to sleep with a white stuffed rabbit. -Zero likes holding something when he sleeps. He'll hold onto anything that's within the reach of his arms. Which is why his parents got him the rabbit because he would never let go of Ichiru. This was all fine and dandy until one time where Ichiru couldn't wake his brother up when he was sick and he ended up vomiting over Zero. -Actually loves cute stuff. Animals, babies, cure girls, its his weakness. There are tiny little instances of him being attracted in a sense to things that are cute and innocent. The reason behind this is tragic however. Because he was robbed of his childhood, and could never go back to feeling like a regular kid again after the event with Shizuka. His inner child is craving the comfort that cute things provide. -He keeps the photos Kaien made of him and Ichiru to himself as dear treasures. -On that topic, he also created a photo album of baby Ren because he deep down regretted that the Headmaster never knew his second grandchild and he knew Kaien would have wanted to make a photo album if he had been there. -As an adult, he secretly misses having a pet sometimes. It doesn't have to be a horse again, but he would certainly have liked to own an animal or two. After Kaien's death, he mostly thinks about wanting a cat to keep the headmaster's love for kitty aesthetics with him somehow. -One time during an arts and crafts project Ai made for Zero on Father's Day when she was little, she seriously overdid it with the glitter. His clothes were still carrying glitter traces by the time he had to go to work. The other hunters sure sniffled behind his back at the sight of the sparkles. -Considering the amount of time he spent babysitting AI and the fact he promised to play house with Ren and AI (something we never see Yuki do), its safe to say Zero is the one who primarily plays games with the kids. He would even allow them to dress him up or 'do his hair and make-up' if they pouted cutely enough. -Which is why I think that there was at least one time where he had to pretend to be an evil dragon, with Ai playing princess and Ren playing the brave knight rescuing her sister from the tower. -If Aido wasn't babysitting during the playdates between Ai and Seiya, then Zero was. -Considering Seiya has a niece, this means he also had a younger sibling and I bet Zero was Aido's preferred babysitter for his 2nd child because Zero had already proven himself as a capable babysitter. -Whenever young Ren needed new clothes, it would be Ai and Zero to take her on a shopping trip. -I also think that Zero would often accompany Yuki had time to read Ren bedtime stories. He would always fall asleep beside his daughter, and Yuki thought it was too cute of a scene to wake him up.

Kaname is born in what will later be England.

1120:

Kaname is bitten and after committing a massacre of people, escapes to a ship and tries to sleep forever.

1637:

Kaname wakes up in Japan, eats the people who find him, walks into the sun to try and die. It does not work.

1643:

Kaname meets the “Hooded Lady”, Tani Kuran, a fellow vampire who wears a Japanese wedding dress half the time. She gives Kaname the name Kaname since Kaname forgot his original name (Cain I.) and he takes her surname, Kuran. They fall in love (very weird codependent love) and have a son named Christopher/“Krist” (he’s dead).

1646

After the Hooded Lady attempts to kill the current vampires in charge to stop infecting Japan and influenced Kaname to join. While Kaname is fighting with the leader, Tani steps in between the two to protect him. This allows Kaname to kill his opponent but, in doing so, he unintentionally impales Tani also. Tani tells him she might’ve done this on purpose.

Kaname burns the rest of the current council down but decides to seize control in their place before leaving Japan, thus leaving Vampires having no power there.

Though this is throughout time nearly all of Kaname’s descendants inbreed and die, except for Juri and Rido.

1761:

The dhampir and future revered vampire hunter Kaien Cross is born in a British colony (he’s Irish).

1779:

Kaien throws a rock at Kaname’s head in anger at the bourgeoise. This causes the two to meet.

2002:

Yuki Cross/Kuran is born.

2003:

Zero Kiryu is born.

2004:

Ichiru Kiryu is born.

2005:

Emi Yagari is born.

2007:

Juri Kuran-Tomita, Kazuya Tomita (Juri’s husband and Yuki’s father), and Rido Kuran are killed. Yuki is turned into an amnesiac pseudo-human and taken in by Kaname before being given to and adopted by Kaien.

2014:

Toga Yagari (33 years old) mercy kills his wife Babette after she’s bitten and turned, she begs him to kill her before she goes berserk.

Emi is nine when her father comes home and frustratedly says her mother isn’t ever coming back because she is dead.

Toga would later lose his left eye a few months later.

2015:

Ichiru is bitten and conceals this using illusions.

Zero and Ichiru’s parents are killed in an orchestrated killing by Ichiru and Shizuka Hio. Zero is bitten. They are taken in by Kaien after Kaien saves them from dying and kills Shizuka.

2021:

Part one begins.

Late 2021:

Ichiru Kiryuu kills Kaien Cross. Vampires are exposed to humanity.

Zero gives up half his humanity to evade execution with the help of Kaname.

2022:

Society collapses. The world goes to shit after vampires are revealed, The Council only does stuff that will get them more power. America and Russia nuke each other, Japan closes itself off, groups of humans live in underground colonies, the sky is permanently grey so vampires aren’t affected by the sun. The Japanese military splits off and joins either the Hunters or the Catholic faction known as the Templars.

2023:

Part 2 begins.

Zero saves Emi from a club in which she is a sacrifice. Though Emi kills the other half of the club.

Zero, Emi Yagari, Toga Yagari, Kaname Kuran, Hanabusa Aido, Ruka + Akatsuki Souen, and the hunter army kill the council and dismantle the council’s reign.

Zero and Ichiru fight each other while Kaname kills any remaining councilmen. Ichiru dies. Immediately after, Zero is speared by Yuki and Kaname sees Zero’s body before killing Yuki, his final descendant, in vengeance.

Kaname blows up Cross Academy, and he almost dies. Albeit Kaname is given Yuki’s heart so he is comatose.

A day or a few hours after Emi Yagari stitches up and resurrects Zero with help from her father, though they are nearly killed by the Templars for performing an act that would put them above God.

Kaname wakes a week later without his memory.

Yuki Cross is dead. Ichiru Kiryu is dead.

Emi Yagari resurrects Zero Kiryu with help of Toga Yagari by getting his metabolic processes back on with magic, which takes weeks. The Templars nearly kill her for this as this would make her equal to or above God/Jesus. Aido quickly diverts their attention to “other pressing matters”.

2024

Part 3/Post-Series

5 months after, Zero wakes up.

Emi has become Cross Academy’s headmistress, though she’s more of a “Mockingjay” situation.

Cross Academy is rebuilding.

Kaname Kuran’s memories are brought back by Zero Kiryu.

Kaname attempts to starve himself for a week. Zero finds him.

Kaname and Zero get together after a whole deal of Kaname being pissed off zero brought him back but then Zero isn’t taking his shit and then they have say gex in the abandoned apartment and dam now they are boyfriends and the series goes on as weird slices of life.

Emi has her son Mei. The father is unknown.

Kaname and Zero get married.

Like in VK Kaname and Zero had hostile between each other. Like they hated each other basically haha. But Hino wanted them to like get along at the end but it felt really rushed and random? Lol. Then Kaname gives his blessing which was random but I guess makes sense in terms of him wanting Yuuki to be happy. But it left things unclear between these two men. Like what do they think of each other? Or are they just indifferent to the other just knowing each one is half of Yuuki’s heart?

If this were a different manga I feel like it would’ve had filler chapters of Kaname and Zero being forced to hang out or get some kind of mission done lol. Idk maybe I’m going into AU territory now lol
