HB Reimagined HCs: The Ars Goetia

Randomly had some thoughts back to my HB Reimagined AU atm, and since I already chatted a bit about Stolas earlier... who wants to hear some lore I had in mind for the Ars Goetia society itself?

*To clarify, as this is ofc an AU this is not meant to be a criticism against the canon HB's lore or however... just something I wanted to make for the fun of it 'cause well- I love demon birds lol*

-Many, many millennia ago... the Ars Goetia were descended from fallen angels, cast aside from the great war to serve loyally under Lucifer's will. Being renown for their beauty, grace and feathered forms even back when serving Heaven... overtime they formed into the (mostly) avian high-society folk you see today.

-The Ars Goetia, revered as they are overall, are actually split into their own personal hierarchies based on what powers/roles they serve to King Paimon. Some (aka: Stolas) are tasked with looking after celestial bodies, prophecies, and other forms of black magic... while others (aka: Andrealphus) use elemental spells to provide comfort to their fellow Goetias against the generally toxic Hell environment. On the "bottom" tiers of Goetia society, would be the typical noble-class who'd just socialize with one another, provide gossip/useful tidbits for their admired royalty (aka: Stella through her marriage to Stolas), and keep things "entertaining" to their own standards. It may not provide much "usefulness" in terms of gaining power/resources... but for how dangerous and unpredictable Hell can be, its helpful to at least keep a "peaceful comfort" type of vibe, anyway.

-Marriage within the Ars Goetia is a bit of a... "mixed" bag, primarily done for either political power gain, wealth improvement, and sometimes even for actual-love (though rare, its not impossible given how irl birds can form a "mate-for-life" type of bond). Arranged marriages can be formed from when a pair is either young (childhood-teen years) by their parents/other relatives, or between the couple themselves offering said proposal to eachother once they're matured adults. Other Goetias may have multiple spouses instead of staying strictly monogamous, have same-sex marriages, or even not marry at all (depending on the individual).

-The concept of "precautionary heirs" isn't really a thing since Goetias are among the classes of Hell demons who are widely-considered "immortal"... so with such long lifespans one would expect a Goetia couple to wait a bit in having children (unless they genuinely, truly desire to be parents right away), or just not have any at all if there's no risk in their lives. Stolas was among the older-aged Goetias who only recently decided on starting a family (due to the increase in Heaven's "exterminators" invading Hell); having the premonition in seeing himself "die" in a holy way down the line... hence Octavia being as young as she is rn (though Stella lowkey wanted a kid alot earlier in their marriage, Stolas just didn't have the time to bring up said topic due to his own responsibilities over the stars, herbology, etc.).

-When a Goetia child is conceived, they first start out life through... well, an egg lol. Often coming in a wide variety of spots, colors, patterns, etc... these arrivals would often be celebrated through "nest showers"; taking place with the parents' close companions giving their blessings/gifts to the little one. A common bonding activity at these events is through casting a magical light under the egg, the hue glowing the color of respective embyro's sex (ex. pink for a girl, blue for a boy, sometimes flickering the same/both colors twice if the egg is carrying twins). When it comes time for hatching to begin, typically the egg-laying parent would gather up all the comfiest of blankets/throws/other items to create a "nest" for the egg to incubate in... taking over a good few days until the first few cracks of the shell start to form.

-Upon hatching completely, a Goetia chick would typically be born without feathers (depending on the specific Goetia species), blind and constantly "chirping" for food. To any other Hell species these babies may not exactly be... well, the "cutest", but to their parents they're often praised as the pinnacle of beauty, and dolled up to show off wherever they go. After a few weeks/months as a hatchling, the chick will steadily open their eyes and "fluff up" in downy feathers... only increasing further in adoration by both loved ones and outsiders-alike.

-Goetias may not have "visible" wings on themselves like a typical (anthro) bird... but when they feel the mood to "fly" around high places in Hell, they can sometimes shift their arms into a pair of wings for help in gliding. Others like a waterfowl-based Goetia use their arm-wings for swimming underwater at swift, graceful movements.

-Among the usual love languages of kisses, cuddling, gift-giving, and so on... a common way for a Goetia to show love is through "preening" (aka, nibbling their beaks to clean through a patch of feathers). For Goetias this is often a soft, intimate gesture only preserved for the closest of bonds (a parent and child, lovers, best friends, etc.). On a non-Goetia, this gesture would feel... "awkward" to experience, since there's no feathers to actually preen through (so the skin would basically just be all scratched/nibbled on, really lol).

RANDOM CUPHEAD HEADCANON DUMP!

((Was gonna put that down as a header, but since my internet’s kinda slow today, and Tumblr won’t let me use headers right now, I had to type it like that…))

Anyway, since this looks like a great place for posting Cuphead headcanons, I thought I’d put mine out here for funsies, starting with my favorite character…

Little disclaimer on this one: Part of my headcanon for The Devil here sort of involves a demonic dad and demonic siblings, kinda like that Infernal Family AU made by @retroferno. Now, before you start calling me a plagiarizer, I want to let you all know that I’ve had this sort of “Seven Princes of Hell” idea in my head for Cuphead’s Devil LONG before coming across that AU. My version still has a lot of key differences, as you’ll soon find out. I’m not trying to insult retroferno here by any means. They’re a great Cuphead artist, and you should totally follow them. I’m just letting you all know what to expect in this post, so that I don’t start accidentally raising any plagiarism suspicions on here.

So, with all that said, here’s my cringy ass headcanons! :D

The reason why The Devil’s always so full of himself, is due to a CRAZY amount of low self-esteem for being the smallest of seven demon brothers, which would prompt his older bros to mock and give him degrading nicknames, like “Little Luci” or “The Runt”.

His father is Apollyon, the demon of destruction and King of the Abyss (and a fallen angel, who split himself into 7 more smaller demons when thrown from Heaven, which, in my mind, was how The Devil and his brothers were “born”). Unfortunately, he never thought too highly of Luci either, since his smaller stature made him very weak compared to his brothers. This just made him see Luci as a lost cause and a disgrace.

Before Luci became the devil of Inkwell Isles, his brothers were each given their own “underworld” to rule on Earth, when they all came of age (Leviathan had the oceans, Maymun had the gold mines, Belial had the volcanic areas, etc.)

Luci, not wanting to be left out any longer, begged Apollyon to send him to Earth, so that he could find his own underworld to rule and prove he’s not a weakling. Apollyon would only begrudgingly agree to this, not because he cared about Luci, but because he wanted to get rid of him for good, and assumed that he wouldn’t survive that long up there anyway.

Now, for Henchmen, he didn’t get along that well with The Devil when they first met. In addition to having access to Earth, and their own underworlds to rule, The Devil and his brothers were each given their own henchman demon as a “coming of age gift” (think of it like the pearls and the diamonds in Steven Universe). All the older brothers got a henchman that perfectly matched their personality; but The Devil (Luci), being the last one to receive any kind of gift from his father, was stuck with a henchman that was the exact opposite of him in almost every way. Needless to say, Luci wasn’t very happy about that.

One day, while exploring Inkwell Isles for the first time, Luci got so fed up with Henchman’s goofy antics and constant cheerfulness, that he screamed at him, saying he’d wish his father never paired him up with a “useless fat dope”. And through tearful sobs, Henchman replies with “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be useless! I just want to make you proud!”, which makes Luci come to a full realization that he’d use to say those exact words to his father whenever HE screwed something up. This is basically my theory on why The Devil is often so much more patient with Henchman, compared to his other minions.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST…

Okay, so this is gonna sound REALLY corny and cliché, but…I like to believe that King Dice started out as an orphan with big dreams of becoming the greatest musician, radio host, and entertainer in all the Inkwell Isles; and once he reached the age of 12, he felt like his talents were being wasted in the orphanage. So he ran away, became a pickpocket, and eventually met young Devil and young Henchman along the way (I’m one of those people who likes to view Dice and The Devil as childhood friends).

King Dice was also the one who introduced The Devil to earthly wonders like money, carnivals, jazz, casinos, and of course, cake.

book notes

for anyone who is interested in a nuanced take on fairy beliefs vs the Christian Church in the Middle Ages, this book by Richard Firth Green was actually so good, if your library has it:

like, obvs it’s just one person’s take on a very complex topic, but it’s well-written, well-researched, and it uses a bunch of Arthurian examples throughout to explore this dynamic (see under cut)

really interesting exploration of how the Church’s response evolved from the early-High Middle Ages (”dude, you believe in fairies? hhhmmm, do penance for 10 days”) to the Late Middle Ages/Early Modern Period (”kill them for heresy and witchcraft!”)

and how it enfolded vernacular/fairy beliefs into Christian doctrine as fairies being either a) demons or b) the illusions of demons (and how dangerous/bad these demons were depended on the time/location/cleric in question - some packaged fairies as “neutral” demons who fell when the rebel angels did, and who must be punished on Earth but will return to Heaven on Doomsday - potentially doing this to soften things for their parishioners, who often held these fairy beliefs and reconciled them with Christianity, uh, differently than the Church officially would prefer)

and enduring belief in fairies existed in both common and aristocratic circles (can see this in medieval romances, although they’re not the only source of evidence), rather than just being used as cultural “decoration” by a more sceptical upperclass

aaaaand because of this conflation of fairy = demon, you get a really interesting blend/overlap with medieval demonology and enduring “folk” beliefs (obvs not all of medieval demonology was just rebranded fairies, but some of it defs was - you see stories being retold with “devil” instead of “elf”, for example)

INCLUDING in Arthuriana - how you get Morgan the Fairy (”le Fay”) vs Morgan who was raised in a nunnery and learned dark magic there, the Lady of the Lake as a (largely) positive force, Merlin inexplicably as a (perceived to be...) Good Guy despite being the literal antichrist, the Green Knight and all the overlap with Christian symbolism in that story, etc, etc. and they all just either??? co-exist in the same stories or appear through either more fay or more ~Christian lenses depending on the version

and it creates a very interesting and very confusing soup of Stuff stemming from a very confusing - and sometimes dangerous - soup of official and unofficial beliefs evolving over hundreds of years

anyway, WRT Arthuriana it’s got (and ymmv on these, but they’re all interesting thoughts):

(i think in Gottfried’s Tristan???) apparently Tristan has a rainbow fairy dog called Petitcriu...name a knight less deserving of such a Good Boy smh

Chretien’s Yvain flooding out Laudine at the fountain (...jerk) as a continuation of the beliefs surrounding a magical Spring at Barenton

Gingalain moving from being the son of Gawain and the fairy Blanchemal (and having a fairy love interest, Pucelle) in the French OG version (~1200-ish) to being the son of Gawain and his human mistress (with Pucelle also being human) in a later 15th-C Middle English version)

AJDKN UJ IOE E Merlin’s conception, that one’s a wild ride - theologians REALLY didn’t like the idea of demons being fertile, and the work-arounds they came up with were...incredible. but skipping over that sheer comedy, the author draws links between Merlin’s conception and the general trend of claiming a fairy lover/whatever when a difficult-to-explain pregnancy arose. He also theorises that Geoffrey’s idea for Merlin’s father being a demon/fairy may have come from Nennius saying that Merlin/Ambrosius’ mother “never knew a man”. Later adaptations of this storyline made it even more fay-like (when they weren’t, like Robert de Boron, making it more fucked-up) by making Merlin’s father invisible (Wace) or a super attractive guy in swanky gold clothes (Layamon) - and Vortigern’s advisor explaining the creatures that lived between the earth and the moon until doomsday, etc, etc (walking that line between fairy and incubi, whichhhhhh was not clearly delineated in the Middle Ages the way it is now). also there’s one 13th-C Anglo-Norman poem where Merlin’s father is a bird that transforms into a dashing young squire, which isn’t terribly demon-y. So even though most versions of this story describe Merlin’s dad as an incubi-demon, what people understood this to mean may have been more fay-ish that we’d expect nowadays (depending on the reader, and also on authorial intention - some are pretty explicit that he’s a demon [many clerics keen to push this as the main narrative], while others refer to him as an elf or fairy). some contemporary scepticism during this time about Merlin having any sort of supernatural parentage as well

[none of the same Church anxieties about explaining away how the Plantagenets and other aristocratic families claim a female fairy ancestress - maybe bc there’s none of the stress about patrilineal bloodlines??? who knows! but yeah, much less thought given to those stories in ecclesiastical circles, and they were very popular in vernacular romances (male aristocratic wish fulfilment?). also, fairy enchantments =/= necromancy, so there are stories like the non-cyclic Lancelot where the Lady of the Lake is found out to be “a fairy by education, not by nature or heredity” (Elspeth Kennedy), with the spirits used in necromancy being demons, not fairies. also potential trend of female-associated magic becoming more passive and book-learned, gradually demonising it leading up to early-modern witch hunts.]

Geoffrey of Monmouth in his Historia and in the Vita Merlini being actually pretty circumspect about saying whether or not Arthur was alive/dead, returning/not returning, maybe due to his work/text being a (hypothesised) defence of the Welsh as being “civilised” (and having been so for centuries before the Normans came) - with the corollary that believing in Arthur’s return was somehow “uncivilised”. Author argues that this may be due to an association with fairy beliefs, and that Layamon is the one that makes Avalon explicitly fey. Also the author describes Arthur as living in a “feminised version of the Christian heaven” (iconic) and says that later writers and people could be very scornful of this belief held by the Britons/Welsh/etc, and that it was contrary to orthodox ways of thinking.

Links the “discovery” of Arthur and Guinevere’s bodies in Glastonbury in the late 12th-C as similar to when individuals found the bodies of their loved ones, thus making it much harder to believe (and hope) that they were still alive in fairyland. Makes a suggestion that the monks in Glastonbury who “found” these bodies may have been trying to curry favour with the English crown (i.e. champion/hope of the Welsh isn’t coming back) but also may have been trying to “help”/”save”/correct the thoughts/ideology of the Welsh (i.e. “set them on the correct path to salvation”). Lots of medieval writers describing Arthur as living in “fairyland”. Precedent of people visiting fairyland and returning, so Avalon/fairyland =/= a place only for the dead (i.e. Arthur isn’t dead). An Arthurian example, albeit a less explicitly fay one, is Lancelot getting in and out of Gorre (with Gorre as a “typically supressed and rationalised” version of fairyland) in Chretien’s Knight of the Cart.

Some stuff about the wild horde (distinct from the wild hunt) being presented by some writers as very penitential (i.e. they are departed souls that may look like they’re bearing arms/hunting/whatever as they did in life, but really they are in agony e.g. because their weapons burn them) and tbh demonic (black armour, carrying torches, ominous aesthetic). Other writers thought maybe it was - once again! - demonic impersonators rather than actual mortal souls. (Should note also that the wild horde/wild hunt motifs were not always associated with their being dead). Relevant in the Arthurian context because Arthur and his court were sometimes associated with the idea of the wild horde (as in, sometimes the wild horde is described as Arthur’s court living it up in a cool, undying sort of way - “in the likeness of knights hunting or jousting, commonly known as the household of Hellequin or of Arthur” [Etienne de Bourbon, a medieval writer] - with Hellequin’s household often being used to encompass either the wild hunt or the wild horde). Ultimate point made by the author (props to him, he’s always like “if i’m right” lol) that for many clerical writers, it was very uncomfortable to leave people with the impression that Arthur and his court were living it up in fairyland (and similar for other figures associated with the wild hunt/horde) and this idea needed to be corrected/shaped to suit more orthodox perspectives - e.g. tying in with notions of purgatory, etc.

Aaaand this one was exciting to me just bc i’ve vaguely heard about Arthur and his knights snoozing under a hill, but for some reason i could only remember this being in Victoria-era-and-onwards poetry. 3 versions of the same tale, where a servant looks for his master’s lost horse on a Sicilian mountain. Version 1) servant of a bishop finds his master’s horse in the beautiful palace of Arthur’s court beneath Mt Etna. Aside from the fact that the ancient wound Arthur received from Mordred opens once a year, it’s not very purgatory-like. Version 2) a dean’s servant is told by an old man that King Arthur has the horse on Mt Gyber (Mt Etna). he is told that his master must attend Arthur’s court in 14 days, but the dean laughs it off...then sickens and dies on the appointed day (whoops). Enough differences to this story compared to the first to suggest an oral circulation. Also a note in the version/text that such mountains are said to be the mouth of hell, and only the wicked are sent there, not the chosen. Version 3) Etienne again! Also likely changed with intervening oral circulation. The master is not an ecclesiastical figure, and Arthur’s palace is now a populous city - also Arthur is not referred to, just a nameless prince. There is a gatekeeper who warns the servant not to eat or drink while he’s there (that...is a very fairy-ish proscription). This mountain is apparently reputed to be the site of purgatory. The book author (Richard, i mean) ties these versions in with other stories/accounts of different entrances to purgatory (e.g. one on an island in an Irish lake) as being part of a gradual process of “rendering [...] fairyland purgatorial”.

Finally, Gawain in Roman van Walewein: To get to an ‘earthly paradise’ [i.e. King Assentijn’s garden with its fountain of youth - side note that ‘earthly paradises’ were often popularly described to be fairyland/where fairies live, in addition to their theological functions, e.g. Avalon was sometimes described as an earthly paradise...i should also say that purgatory was frequently thought to be located beside earthly paradise, so there’s the proximity element] and the castle containing it, Gawain must cross a river (guided by a magical talking fox) that a) has waters that burn like fire, and b) can only be crossed by using a bridge sharper than a razor. His reaction? “Is it the enchantment of elves or magic / that I see?”. He is then guided by the fox underneath the river through a tunnel, and is told that the river’s source is in the depths of hell, and “[the river] is the true purgatory / All souls, having departed from the body / Must come here to bathe.” So it’s a very strong intermingling of fairy and purgatorial imagery/ideas!

I dunno, I just found this very ??? satisfying to read

it leaned towards lit-crit at times (which, considering the subject matter, is honestly fair enough), but it was more respectful of vernacular beliefs than so many other academic takes i see (ofc ymmv re: anything to do with non-Christian major religions, but i think the author’s pretty solid on this!), and it had an explanation for the survival of these beliefs that imo made a lot of sense, especially from a pan-European perspective, not just a Celtic one

plus it explored the undeniable damage done by Christianity over history without making up some “ranged battle between paganism and the Church” that i see e v e r y w h e r e in casual Arthurian circles...which, like, i empathise with the vibe, but also! that’s just straight-up historical revisionism! (i blame MZB and the 80′s for that one)

(there was a fantastic post floating around a while ago about how the religious syncretism in Arthurian literature is much more interesting than peeling away all of the Catholicism in the medieval lit (...you ?? don’t end up with much left?) and saying that this is more “accurate” to some obscure original)

anyway yeah yeah ymmv but it’s v interesting 😊

An NCT Dream Fantasy Series.

Charia Kingdom - A place that has equal amounts of sunshine and rain, hot and cold, rich and poor, and, humans and creatures that couldn’t be identified as that of human status. Ruled by the Lee family with a king whose cutthroat and unforgiving nature is feared by many. The poor not cared for by people who have everything, where disease takes the lives of those unfortunate enough to not have the funds to purchase medicine. A place where humans live among creatures many would find terrifying. It’s no secret that Vampires, Werewolves, Wizards, etc live amongst them like normal people. Unless you murder someone, you’re considered normal. Everyone lives their own lives, whether it be a happy life, or a sorrowful life...

Mark Lee - Born into a family of renowned witches and wizards, there came a time for Mark to fly the nest. The nest being their comfortable home in the middle of the bustling kingdom. After the death of the castle’s witch, 17 year old Mark was brought in to take her place. He lives up to his family’s name and has impressed the royal family with his natural talents. Now 20 years old with the trust of the royal family and kingdom, shy, quiet Mark is given a new obstacle when a new maid is brought to work alongside him in the castle. Granted she’s mostly there to clean up his mess, but he finds she plays a much bigger role in his life than just that. With the new light in his life, Mark faces a new task at hand. Keeping her safe from the horrors of the castle.

Huang Renjun - Being chased from the royal family’s castle at the age of 16 was never something Renjun hoped for when he was growing up. Having lived in the castle since his birth, his mother, the castles witch, raised him alone. After finding out a huge secret and confronting the king, the king has Renjun’s mother killed, leading Renjun to use the dark powers he never knew he had to curse the Prince of the kingdom. After a bounty is put on his head for his crimes, he lives his life on the run, burrowing away in a cabin far out in the depths of the dangerous forest. A place where many lethal creatures live. Now 19, Renjun has lived in solitude for 3 years, and never expected a girl to break into his home in the dead of night. The girl he encounters is on the run herself, but refuses to tell him why. The stubborn, mentally strong, and brave girl persaudes him to let her stay with him. Can he live alongside another being when he’s still got dark magic flowing through his veins and a huge secret heavy in his heart?

Running From The Dark - [S], [A], [F]

Lee Jeno - Being the crown prince of Charia Kingdom was never something that worried Jeno. He was raised by his mother to smile when talked to, and to have a kind heart so that he would rule the kingdom differently to how his father had. At 16, he’s unexpectedly hit by a powerful curse after hearing a ruckus going on in the echoing halls of the castle. It flips his life around, his new status as a werewolf being a challenge he hates with all his heart. It turned the kingdoms sweetheart into an angry, brooding boy. Now 19, Jeno has learned how to control when he phases with the help of the remedies Mark brews for him. The only thing he can’t control is bursting into a gigantic wolf every time a negative emotion takes over his mind. No one apart from the workers of the castle know that he’s a wolf, it being kept a secret from the public. He runs in the forest in his wolf form calm him down, until he comes face to face with a rogue wolf who threatens his life with her piercing glare. After imprinting on each other, Jeno has to learn how to balance his new love, his duties as prince, his burning rage, and a secret that is revealed to him that changes his life once again.

Stepping Into The Moonlight - [S], [A], [F]

Lee Donghyuck - Donghyuck the cheeky, charismatic boy who wasn't born a demon. As a human Donghyuck was known for his greed and crimes. So when he died at the age of 19, Satan offered him an eternal life in exchange for completing tasks. At the age of 79 he was banished from hell for failing to take the life of someone he decided upon himself didn't deserve to die. For his sin, as punishment he was sent to live on earth forever. Being immortal and watching people you make connections with die from illness, old age, or suicide was a far bigger punishment than dying. Currently 128 years old, he’s seen many of his peers around him die in many ways, and every time it happens it chips away at his sanity and positive attitude. He swore never to fall in love, but upon meeting the princess of Charia, he can’t keep away from her. After falling in love with her, it’s becoming more likely that she will be ripped away from him sooner rather than later. With his emotions flipping completely, can he manage to stop himself from sinning to save the woman he loves?

Na Jaemin - At the age of 19, Jaemin was brutally beaten by a knight of the royal family and left for dead. He was found by a creature of the night and turned into a blood craving vampire. Many years later, he’s now 210 years old and lives life one day at a time. He’s rather peaceful for a murderous creature, only being considered dangerous when he’s starved of the only thing he needs; blood. Before his death, he was an orphan, abandoned with only a pile of letters telling him of his true heritage. Something that’s always planted in the back of his mind. After hunting one night, he hears screams coming from the kingdoms small hospital. There he finds a nurse being attacked by a patient. After defusing the attack, he has no other choice but to help the wounded nurse, not being able to leave her there half dead as he was once before. The addicting scent of her makes him keep her around despite the danger that he poses to her by having her in his home. He finds himself doing something he never would have dreamed of doing to keep her around. After finding out about his true heritage, she changes, for the good or bad? Will this be a love story, or a tragedy?

Zhong Chenle - Born as an angel in heaven, Chenle had always been obsessed over how humans lived on earth. But forbidden to step foot on earth he had to always watch from above. A friendship immediately occurs between the two. He soon finds himself falling for the girl and has hopes of living the normal life he always wanted. As he gets used to living as a human does, will life pan out the way sweet Chenle wants?

Park Jisung - In human form, Jisung looks like the worlds softest boy. His shy, slightly awkward persona often tricks people into thinking that he couldn’t even fight off a new-born baby. So why has the royal family put this lanky, slender 17 year old boy in front of the castles main gate as its protector when the rumours are that a terrifying dragon is the guarder of the castle. Well, something not many people know about the boy is that he’s a dragon hybrid. And can turn into an overwhelmingly huge dragon that has even the bravest of knights quivering in their chain mail. So far no one has ever gotten past the boy, and he intends on keeping it that way. So when a girl who looks around the same age as him slips past him and is found stealing from the castle, he’s not too impressed. She’s locked away in the dungeon, and the curious boy has to meet the only person to ever get past him. She’s sentenced to death but after pleading with his friend Prince Jeno, her crimes are pardoned, but only if Jisung keeps her with him as his assistant. He encourages her to change her thieving ways, but will he ever be able to change the hard-headed girl he argues with daily? What if you add strange feelings of love into the mix and a promise that one of them doesn't intend on keeping?

1. I want to see Sam and Cas and Dean being pals! I especially want to see Cas trying to figure out how he feels about Sam without heaven influencing him to think of him purely as the boy with the demon blood who will break the last seal. I wanna see Dean making fun of Cas with various misconceptions about the bible and Cas just taking it wildly seriously and not getting any jokes.

2. I’d love just a domestic-ish fic, let Sam drill Cas with questions about angels and heaven! Let Cas drill Dean and Sam about human culture! Would love to see Cas taking human culture things out of the context that Sam and Dean provide him, or maybe Dean purposely lies to him about something as a prank

The Prophetic Saint Who Foretold What the End of the World Will Be Like

When the pope used the term “Angel of the Apocalypse” in the Middle Ages, people knew he was talking about St. Vincent Ferrer

St. Vincent Ferrer earned the title preaching the Gospel powerfully and persuasively, often on the Final Judgment and the coming of the Antichrist. Even Pius II’s Bull of Canonization called St. Vincent Ferrer “the Angel of the Apocalypse, flying through the heavens to announce the day of the Last Judgment, to evangelize the inhabitants of the earth.”

This year marks the 600th anniversary of St. Vincent Ferrer’s death on April 5, 1419, yet his words remain as powerful and necessary as ever. Before looking at his preaching on the Last Judgment, the Antichrist and the End of the World, let’s understand how powerful a preacher he was all over Europe, beginning in his native Spain, by looking at a mere speck of who he reached and the miracles he performed.

As a Dominican priest, Vincent Ferrer preached in his own native language or Latin, yet wherever he went, everyone miraculously understood his every word as if he were preaching in their language. Sinners by the thousands, even the most hardened, repented. When the curious Moorish king sent for him, after Vincent Ferrer gave just three sermons, 8,000 Moors converted and wanted to be baptized. Modest estimates put his conversion of Jews in city after city in Spain at 25,000.

At one major Church conference, Vincent’s preaching saw 14 of 16 rabbis converted on the spot. In Toledo as Jews became Christians they turned their synagogue into a church under the Blessed Mother.

Like Jesus raising the widow of Naim’s son, thorough the power of Christ St. Vincent stopped a funeral procession and commanded the corpse to rise, restoring the dead man to life. In all, he restored 28 dead people back to life. Even after he died, two dead people placed on his tomb came back to life.

He cured countless physical infirmities, working wonders through the name of Jesus and the Sign of the Cross. In one, he restored the use of the limbs of an incurably crippled boy who eventually became the Bishop of Barcelona.

In confession, he could read souls. He shared heavenly previews of future events, such as telling a mother her little son would become pope and canonize him — which happened as the boy became Callixtus III. (At the canonization Vincent Ferrer’s body was found incorrupt.) Earlier, during a Barcelona famine, he announced two ships were coming loaded with corn. Nobody believed. That same day, as predicted, the ships arrived.

Highly devoted to the Blessed Mother, he preached and demonstrated the power of the Rosary through immediate conversion obtained through praying it.

Preaching the Last Judgement

Jesus will come not like his first coming in humility and poverty, but “in such majesty and power that the whole world will tremble,” began Angel of the Apocalypse in a sermon. When he powerfully detailed the glory and the horror of separating the sheep and goats described in Matthew 25, record has it sinners were frightened and cried. He wanted them to do so because he himself was fearful of that day and fearful for all those he preached to.

Vincent told the throngs:

People will say ‘to the mountains and the rocks: Fall upon us, and hide us from the face of him who sits upon the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb’ (Revelation 6:16). Yet Jesus said, ‘But when these things begin to come to pass, look up, and lift up your heads,’ ‘because your redemption is at hand’ (Luke 21:28).The Blessed Mother shall sit with him. Jesus will separate the peoples of the nations as a shepherd separates sheep from goats.

St. Vincent cautioned, “On that day it will be better to be a sheep of Jesus Christ that to have been a pope, or king, or emperor.”

Vincent powerfully detailed five virtues revealed in Scripture that distinguishes the sheep: “simple innocence, ample mercy, steadfast patience, true obedience, and worthy penance.”

First, simple innocence is when a person “lives simply, nor hurts anyone in his heart, by hating, nor by defaming in speech, nor striking with hands, nor by stealing. Such a life “is called simple innocence, which makes a man a sheep of Christ.”

In each case, St. Vincent next colorfully details reasons why. A sheep doesn’t attack with horns like a bull...

...nor bite with its teeth like a wolf, nor strike with hooves like a horse… if you wish to be a sheep of Christ, you should strike no one with horns of knowledge or of power, for lawyers strike by the horns of knowledge, jurists, advocates, or men who have great knowledge. Merchants by deceiving others. Lords and bullies strike with the horns of power, plundering or injuring, and extorting, using calumnies and threats, and the like. Listen to what the Lord says by the mouth of David: ‘And I will break all the horns of sinners: but the horns of the just shall be exalted’ (Psalm 74:11).

“Biting” is to defame your neighbor’s reputation, and devour by saying “nothing good praising someone, but only the bad,” so “defamers are not the sheep of Christ, but wolves of hell.”

Kicking like horses means to despise. Therefore, he warns, “children, do not hate your parents; nor parents, children; nor young people, old folks; nor the healthy, the sick; nor rich, the poor; nor masters, their servants; nor prelates, their clergy; and vice versa. It is clear what is simple innocence.”

Second, ample mercy means distributing your God-given temporal and spiritual gifts to the needy. “Because,” Vincent illustrates, “among all the animals a sheep is the most beneficial of animals. For the sheep by growing wool, shows us mercy and benefits of mercy, because how many poor people does a sheep clothe?” Sheep give milk and food to eat to. We imitate and give love this way: our wool is “external and temporal goods, bread and wine, money and clothes and the like.” The milk is “interior and spiritual goods, by giving good teaching to the ignorant… If you have the milk of knowledge, of devotion, or of eloquence, you should give to those not having them.” Vincent reminds of Jesus telling the sheep, “For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink... naked, and you covered me” (Matthew 25:35-36).

Third, steadfast patience takes different forms, such as when someone “suffering from injuries inflicted or spoken to him does not want to concern himself with taking revenge. Rather he loves everyone in general, and prays for them all.” The analogy? The “sheep is a most patient animal, for if harassed while eating, or if struck, it does not defend itself, but goes elsewhere, nor does it avenge itself like a dog or a goat would do, but humbly yields. O blessed is the person, man or woman, who has such patience, and takes no vengeance for injuries, but forgives, as God forgives him.”

Fourth, true obedience means ordering all thoughts, words and actions according to God’s will, not ours, just as sheep are so obedient that a child with a staff easily “can easily guide 30 or 40 sheep.” Remember Psalm 23? Remember Jesus illustrating the shepherd was able to leave 99 safely alone as he searched for the lost sheep?

Vincent Ferrer’s simple summary for the shepherd’s commands includes these: “First that we live humbly” because Jesus said “learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart” (Matthew 11:29). Those with pride aren’t Christ’s sheep but the devil’s goat. Second, give with mercy and generosity. Who “disobediently goes by the way of avarice by committing usury, robbery, theft, etc., is not a sheep of Christ, but a goat of the devil.” Next, we must “walk by the way of cleanness, of chastity, etc.” Matthew 19:12). “Whoever therefore goes by the way of uncleanness and the filthiness of lust and carnality, such is not a sheep of Christ but a goat of the devil.”

Fifth, worthy penance must be performed for sins we’ve committed. The Angel of the Apocalypse emphasizes no one is exempt from sin, As Ecclesiastes (7:21) noted, “For there is no just man upon earth that does good, and sins not.”

“Therefore worthy penance is necessary, by sorrowing for sins and proposing not to relapse, confessing, and making satisfaction. And in this way penance makes a man a sheep of Christ.” To make the analogy, he explains in detail how a sheep is modest, but concludes a goat reflects “the notoriously shameless person, because everyone knows his wicked life and sins, like wicked clergy, and other notorious cohabiters, nor do they wish to cover it up with the tail of penitence; they are impenitent.”

The End of World and the Antichrist

St. Vincent Ferrer not only preached about these in detail but explained them in a letter to Pope Benedict XIII in 1412. Because his sermon is very long, encompassing explanations that focus on Luke 21:25-28, we’ll touch only on the highlights.

Jesus “warns us of the great evils and tribulations which are to come at the end of the world, and tells us of the signs which will precede His coming in judgment,” the Angel of the Apocalypse begins. He knew the Bible by heart and connected everything to Scripture.

God doesn’t leave us clueless. In his mercy, he often sends signs, “so that people forewarned of impending tribulation by means of these signs, through prayer and good works, may obtain in the tribunal of mercy a reversal of the sentence passed against them by God the judge in the heavenly courts; or at least by penance and amendment of life, may prepare themselves against the impending affliction.” Remember Noah, and Jonah?

Three of the “greatest and most terrible” afflictions will be “Antichrist, a man but a diabolical one; second, the destruction by fire of the terrestrial world; third, the universal judgment. And with these tribulations the world will come to an end.” Providence will give us warning signs in the heavens — sun, moon and stars.

The first is “Antichrist, a diabolical man, who will bring distress on the whole world.” He will deceive Christians in four ways.

First, in the sign of the sun (Luke 21:25).Vincent Ferrer explains, “In Holy Scripture Christ is called the Sun… Taking the word etymologically, we have: S-O-L (Super omnia lucens) – ‘Shining above all things’… God the Father sent Him into the world, saying: ‘But unto you who fear my name the Sun of justice shall arise’ (Malachi 4:2).” So what’s the sign given by the sun for arrival of the enemy?

St. Vincent reveals St. Matthew gives it precisely: “The sun will not give its light.” How’s that? Vincent explains the sun will and cannot be darkened in itself, but only when clouds obscure it:

In the same way, in the time of Antichrist, the Sun of justice will be obscured by the interposition of temporal goods and the wealth which Antichrist will bestow on the world, inasmuch as the brightness of faith in Jesus Christ and the glow of good lives will no longer shine among Christians. For, lest they should lose their dominion, temporal rulers, kings and princes will range themselves on the side of Antichrist. In like manner, prelates for fear of losing their dignities, and religious and priests to gain honors and riches, will forsake the Faith of Christ and adhere to Antichrist. Now he will be a veritable man, but so proud that, not only will he desire to have universal dominion in the whole world, but will even demand to be called a god, and will insist on receiving divine worship.

The evil one will be able to accomplish because Daniel (11:43) prophesies — ‘He shall control the riches of gold and silver and all the treasures of Egypt.’ “With this wealth he will gather together in arms all the nations of the world, to fight against those who oppose him — (Revelation 20:7)” and “seduce the nations” and “peoples, that is, with gold and silver and honors.”

St. Vincent continues, “There will indeed be signs in the Sun of justice, for then it will be obscured in the hearts of Christians, since from those hearts it will not give forth the light of Faith; all preaching of a better life will cease, owing to the interposition of… clouds of temporal goods.”

Materialism takes over.

St. Vincent tells us in every case why God all-powerful would permit this error the answer is the same — Wisdom 11:17: “By what things a man sinneth, by the same also is he tormented.”

“If therefore you do not wish to be deceived, now with all your hearts contemn and despise all earthly goods, and long for those of heaven, considering that the goods of this world are transitory and empty, while heavenly and celestial goods are eternal. In this way you will be strong.”

Next, signs in the moon. “In the Holy Scripture the moon signifies our holy Mother the Universal Church, which implies the worldwide union of Christians.” Reflecting the moon’s phases, the Church in the last phase “no longer in the state in which Christ founded it,” but “turned round to pride, pomp and vanity... mercy and liberality are changed into simony, usury and rapine; chastity becomes licentiousness, uncleanness and corruption; the brightness of virtue is changed into envy and malignity; temperance has become gluttony and voracity; patience has given place to anger, war and divisions among the peoples; diligence is superseded by negligence.”

Christ warned us: “There will arise false christs and false prophets. And they will show great signs and wonders in so much to deceive, if possible, even the elect” Matthew (24:24). Fooled with false “miracles.” “Since the people of the world sin against God by having recourse to the works of the devil, such as divination and fortunetelling… instead of laying their needs before the omnipotent God.” Think of all the occult around today.

Don’t be deceived but “place the whole of your faith and confidence in the name of Jesus Christ., and refuse to acknowledge any miracle unless it is worked in that same name; and so you will be strong against seduction.”

Third, “Stars shall fall from heaven,” Christ said (Matthew 24:29). Looking to Daniel (12:3), Vincent proves that refers to the masters, doctors, and licentiates in theology, some of whom “will fall from heaven, that is from the heights of the Faith (Daniel 11:36). Christ also permits this “because of the scandalous and wicked lives and the many sins” of some.

Christ warns us (24:21): “For there shall then be great tribulation such as hath not been from the beginning of the world until now, neither shall be. And unless those days had been shortened, no flesh should be saved; but for the sake of the elect those days shall be shortened.”

The Antichrist will reign for three and a half years, 1,290 days. When he is slain “by lightning on Mount Olivet and his death has been made widely known throughout the world, this our earth will exist for 45 more days; I do not say years, but days” (Daniel 12:11-12). The Doctors said “these 45 days will be given by God for the conversion of those who have been seduced by Antichrist, but Antichrist will have left behind him so great riches and pleasure that hardly any of the nations will be converted to the Faith of Christ. For there is no savior but Christ, and yet they will not be converted.” In Luke 17 Christ warns us it will be like in the days of Noah and Lot when people went about as usual.

Then “a certain dreadful expectation of the judgment and the rage of a fire shall consume the adversaries” (Hebrews 10:27). As David says (Psalm 96:3): “A fire shall go before him and shall burn his enemies round about. His lightnings have shone forth to the world; the earth saw and trembled. The mountains melted like wax at the presence of the Lord; at the presence of the Lord of all the earth.”

“Therefore,” Vincent Ferrer warns, “do penance now, forgive injuries, make restitution of any ill-gotten goods, live up to and confess your religion; If it were certain that in a short time this town was going to be destroyed by fire, would you not exchange all your immovable goods for something that you could take away with you?”

Only the treasure piled up already in heaven.

Sheol (/ˈʃiːoʊl/ SHEE-ohl, /-əl/; Hebrew: שְׁאוֹל Šəʾōl), in the Hebrew Bible, is a place of darkness to which spirits of the dead go. Under some circumstances they are thought to be able to be contacted by the living.

Through much of the OT period, it was believed that all went one place, whether human or animal [Psalm 49:12; Psalm 49:14; Psalm 49:20], whether righteous or wicked [Ecclesiastes 9:2-3].

Psalm 49:12 | But a man, despite his wealth, cannot endure; he is like the beasts that perish.

Psalm 49:14 | Like sheep they are destined for Sheol. Death will be their shepherd. The upright will rule them in the morning, & their form will decay in Sheol, far from their lofty abode.

Psalm 49:20 | A man who has riches w/out understanding is like the beasts that perish.

Ecclesiastes 9:2-3 | It is the same for all: There is a common fate for the righteous & the wicked, for the good & the bad, for the clean & the unclean, for the one who sacrifices & the one who does not. As it is for the good, so it is for the sinner; as it is for the one who makes a vow, so it is for the one who refuses to take a vow. This is an evil in everything that is done under the sun: There is one fate for everyone. Furthermore, the hearts of men are full of evil & madness while they are alive, & afterward they join the dead.

No one could avoid Sheol [Psalm 49:9; 89:48], which was thought to be down in the lowest parts of the earth

Psalm 49:8-9 | For the redemption of his soul is costly, & never can payment suffice, that he should live on forever & not see decay.

Psalm 89:48 | What man can live & never see death? Can he deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah

[Deuteronomy 32:22; 1 Samuel 28:11-15; Job 26:5; Psalm 86:13; Isaiah 7:11; Ezekiel 31:14-16; Ezekiel 31:18]

Deuteronomy 32:22 | For a fire has been kindled by MY anger, & it burns to the depths of Sheol; it consumes the earth & its produce, & scorches the foundations of the mountains.

1 Samuel 28:11-15 | “Whom shall I bring up for you?” the woman asked. “Bring up Samuel,” he replied. But when the woman saw Samuel, she cried out in a loud voice & said to Saul, “Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!” “Do not be afraid,” the king replied. “What do you see?” “I see a god coming up out of the earth,” the woman answered. “What does he look like?” asked Saul. “An old man is coming up,” she replied. “And he is wearing a robe.” So Saul knew that it was Samuel, & he bowed face-down in reverence. Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” “I am deeply distressed,” replied Saul. “The Philistines are fighting against me, & GOD has turned away from me. Psalm 86:13 | For great is YOUR loving devotion to me; YOU have delivered me from the depths of Sheol.

Isaiah 7:11 | “Ask for a sign from the LORD your GOD, whether from the depths of Sheol or the heights of heaven.”

Ezekiel 31:14-16 | This happened so that no other trees by the waters would become great in height & set their tops among the clouds, & no other well-watered trees would reach them in height. For they have all been consigned to death, to the depths of the earth, among the mortals who descend to the Pit.’ This is what the LORD GOD says: ‘On the day it was brought down to Sheol, I caused grief. I covered the deep because of it; I held back its rivers; its abundant waters were restrained. I made Lebanon mourn for it, & all the trees of the field fainted because of it. I made the nations quake at the sound of its downfall, when I cast it down to Sheol w/ those who descend to the Pit. Then all the trees of Eden, the choicest & best of Lebanon, all the well-watered trees, were consoled in the earth below.

Ezekiel 31:18 | Who then is like you in glory & greatness among the trees of Eden? You also will be brought down to the depths of the earth to be w/ the trees of Eden. You will lie among the uncircumcised, w/ those slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh & all his multitude, declares the LORD GOD.’”

Unlike this world, Sheol is devoid of love, hate, envy, work, thought, knowledge, & wisdom [Ecclesiastes 9:6 Ecclesiastes 9:10].

Ecclesiastes 9:6 | Their love, their hate, & their envy have already vanished, & they will never again have a share in all that is done under the sun.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 | Whatever you find to do w/ your hands, do it w/ all your might, for in Sheol, where you are going, there is no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom.

Descriptions are bleak:

There is no light [Job 10:21-22; 17:13; Psalms 88:6; 88:12; 143:3], no remembrance [Psalm 6:5; 88:12; Ecclesiastes 9:5], no praise of GOD [Psalm 6:5; 30:9; 88:10-12; 115:17; Isaiah 38:18] — in fact, no sound at all [Psalm 94:17; 115:17].

Its inhabitants are weak, trembling shades [Job 26:5; Psalm 88:10-12; Isaiah 14:9-10] who can never hope to escape from its gates [Job 10:21; 17:13-16; Isaiah 38:10].

Sheol is like a ravenous beast that swallows the living without being sated [Prov 1:12; 27:20; Isaiah 5:14].

Some thought the dead were cut off from GOD [Psalm 88:3-5; Isaiah 38:11]; while others believed that GOD's presence reached even to Sheol [Psalm 139:8].

Psalm 88:3-5 | For my soul is full of troubles, & my life draws near to Sheol. I am counted among those descending to the Pit. I am like a man w/out strength. I am forsaken among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom YOU remember no more, who are cut off from YOUR care.

Isaiah 38:11 | I said, “I will never again see the LORD, even the LORD, in the land of the living; I will no longer look on mankind w/ those who dwell in this world.

Psalm 139:8 | If I ascend to the heavens, YOU are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, YOU are there.

Toward the end of the OT, GOD revealed that there will be a resurrection of the dead [Isaiah 26:19].

Sheol will devour no longer; instead GOD will swallow up Death [Isaiah 25:8].

The faithful will be rewarded with everlasting life while the rest will experience eternal contempt [Daniel 12:2].

Daniel 12:2 | And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, but others to shame & everlasting contempt.

This theology developed further in the inter-testamental period.

The New Testament

By the time of JESUS, it was common for Jews to believe that the righteous dead go to a place of comfort while the wicked go to Hades

["Hades" normally translates "Sheol" in the LXX], a place of torment [Luke 16:22-23].

Luke 16:22-23 | One day the beggar died & was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. And the rich man also died & was buried. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up & saw Abraham from afar, with Lazarus by his side.

Similarly, in Christianity, believers who die go immediately to be with the LORD

[2 Corinthians 5:8 ; Philippians 1:23].

Hades is a hostile place whose gates cannot prevail against the Church [Matthew 16:18].

Matthew 16:18 | And I tell you that you are Peter, & on this rock I will build MY Church, & the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.

In fact, JESUS HIMSELF holds the keys of Death & Hades [Revelation 1:18].

Revelation 1:18 | the Living One. I was dead, & behold, now I am alive forever & ever! And I hold the keys of Death & of Hades.

Death & Hades will ultimately relinquish their dead & be cast into the lake of fire [Revelation 20:13-14].

Revelation 20:13-14 | The sea gave up its dead, & Death & Hades gave up their dead, & each one was judged according to his deeds. Then Death & Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the 2nd death—the lake of fire.

The fact theology develops within the OT & between the O&NT does not mean the BIBLE is contradictory or contains errors.

It only indicates progressive revelation,

that GOD revealed more of HIMSELF & HIS plan of salvation as time went on.

Some OT saints believed in Sheol, while the NT teaches clearly about heaven & hell, is no more of a problem than that the OT contains a system of atonement by animal sacrifice

Now made obsolete in CHRIST [Hebrews 10:4-10] or the OT teaches GOD is one [Deuteronomy 6:4] while the NT reveals a Trinity. #TrinityofGOD

This WORD is often translated in the KJV "grave" [e.g. Genesis 37:35; 1 Samuel 2:6; Job 7:9; Job 14:13; Psalm 6:5; Psalm 49:14; Isaiah 14:11, etc.]

or "hell" [Deuteronomy 32:22; Psalm 9:17; Psalm 18:5; Isaiah 14:9; Amos 9:2, etc.];

in 3 places by "pit" [Numbers 16:30-33; Job 17:16].

It means really the unseen world, the state or abode of the dead, & is the equivalent of the Greek Hades, by which word it is translated in Septuagint.

The English Revisers have acted somewhat inconsistently in leaving "grave" or "pit" in the historical books & putting "Sheol" in the margin, while substituting "Sheol" in the poetical writings, & putting "grave" in the margin

["hell" is retained in Isaiah 14].

Compare their "Preface."

The American Revisers more properly use "Sheol" throughout.

The etymology of the word is uncertain.

A favorite derivation is from sha'al, "to ask" [Proverbs 1:12; Proverbs 27:20; Proverbs 30:15-16; Isaiah 5:14; Habakkuk 2:5];

others prefer the sha'al, "to be hollow."

The Babylonians are said to have a similar word Sualu, though this is questioned by some.

2. The Abode of the Dead:

Into Sheol, when life is ended, the dead are gathered in their tribes & families. Hence, the expression frequently occurring in the Pentateuch, "to be gathered to one's people,"

"to go to one's fathers," etc.

[Genesis 15:15; Genesis 25:8, Genesis 25:17; Genesis 49:33; Numbers 20:24, Numbers 20:28; Numbers 31:2; Deuteronomy 32:50; Deuteronomy 34:5].

It is figured as an under-world [Isaiah 44:23; Ezekiel 26:20, etc.],

& is described by other terms, as "the pit" [Job 33:24; Psalm 28:1; Psalm 30:3; Proverbs 1:12; Isaiah 38:18, etc.],

ABADDON [which see] or Destruction [Job 26:6; Job 28:22; Proverbs 15:11],

the place of "silence" [Psalm 94:17; Psalm 115:17],

"the land of darkness & the shadow of death" [Job 10:21].

It is, as the antithesis of the living condition, the synonym for everything that is gloomy, inert, insubstantial [the abode of Rephaim, "shades,"

[Job 26:5; Proverbs 2:18; Proverbs 21:16; Isaiah 14:9; Isaiah 26:14].

It is a "land of forgetfulness," where GOD's "wonders" are unknown [Psalms 88:10-12].

There is no remembrance or praise of GOD [Psalm 6:5; Psalm 88:12; Psalm 115:17, etc.]

In its darkness, stillness, powerlessness, lack of knowledge & inactivity, it is a true abode of death [see DEATH];

hence, is regarded by the living with shrinking, horror & dismay [Psalm 39:13; Isaiah 38:17-19],

though to the weary & troubled it may present the aspect of a welcome rest or sleep [Job 3:17-22; Job 14:12].

The Greek idea of Hades was not dissimilar.

(1) Not Removed from GOD's Jurisdiction.

It would be yet more erroneous to speak with Dr. Charles [Eschatology, 35] of Sheol as a region "quite independent of YAHWE, & outside the sphere of HIS rule."

"Sheol is naked before GOD," says Job, "& Abaddon hath no covering" [Job 26:6].

"If I make my bed in Sheol," says the Psalmist, "behold thou art there" [Psalms 139:8].

The wrath of YAHWE burns unto the lowest Sheol [Deuteronomy 32:22].

As a rule there is little sense of moral distinctions in the OT representations of Sheol, yet possibly these are not altogether wanting

[on the above & others points in theology of Sheol].

(2) Relation to Immortality.

To apprehend fully the OT conception of Sheol one must view it in its relation to the idea of death as something unnatural & abnormal for man; a result of sin.

The believer's hope for the future, so far as this had place, was not prolonged existence in Sheol, but deliverance from it & restoration to new life in GOD's presence [Job 14:13-15; Job 19:25-27; Psalm 16:10,11; Psalm 17:15; Psalm 49:15; Psalm 73:24-26]

see IMMORTALITY; ESCHATOLOGY OF THE OT; RESURRECTION].

Dr. Charles probably goes too far in thinking of Sheol in Psalm 49 & 73 as "the future abode of the wicked only; heaven as that of the righteous" [op. cit., 74];

but different destinies are clearly indicated.

3. Post-canonical Period:

There is no doubt, at all events, in the postcanonical Jewish literature [the Apocrypha & apocalyptic writings] a very considerable development is manifest in the idea of Sheol.

Distinction between good & bad in Israel is emphasized;

Sheol becomes for certain classes an intermediate state between death & resurrection;

for the wicked & for Gentiles it is nearly a synonym for Gehenna [hell].

Any thoughts on the differences between ghosts and demons, since Hell has been busted open but it's pretty much just ghosts topside (except Belphie). It can't just be time in Hell as the deciding factor - unless Jack the Ripper's been haunting people for awhile and just recently got his soul sent to Hell. Crowley's the only demon we really have a timeline for... I wonder if souls "choose", like Dean's "choice" to get off the rack and take up the knife when he was in Hell...

So... I don’t honestly have more than random guesses to go on here, but this is one of those cosmological things I tend to obsess over at 3 am, so I decided to take this directly to grey’s chattybubbles, and we had an interesting chat about it. I’ll just put it here because our rambling entertained me, and heck, maybe someone else has something to add...

Is Religion Even Necessary?

So you have heard them all, Catholic, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, New Age, etc. etc., a denomination of this, a denomination of that. Every religion at war with each other, fighting over who’s religion is the right religion. So much confusion! There is only one GOD Almighty and not all of these people holding different beliefs could possibly be right, let’s be honest. Every single one of us have blood flowing through our veins, two legs, the same types of day to day challenges, etc. and we will all be headed to the same place after leaving this earth just like we were all put on this same earth together. We all came into this world the same way, from the same GOD Almighty, and we will all go out the same, to either one of two places created by GOD Almighty, Heaven or Hell. (Where will you go?) So let’s get to the truth of the matter. If all religions take away from the Holy Bible, then why not just rely on what the Holy Bible says? Why make our own rules and traditions? Religion is a social-cultural system of designated behaviors and practices, morals, worldviews, texts, sanctified places, prophecies, ethics, or organizations, that relates humanity to supernatural, transcendental, or spiritual elements.

So let’s examine things for a moment. Since all religions take something from the Holy Bible then let’s look at the Holy Bible. The KJV (King James Version) Holy Bible to be exact; said to be the best translation, closest to the original, with nothing added or removed as most other translations these days have. There is either scripture missing or added with words that give the scriptures a whole new meaning entirely. Who said we wanted ‘your’ opinion sir, just give it to us straight, right. The Holy Bible gives us the daily instructions (commandments from GOD) that we need to be 'truly’ good people, so the world flows smoothly. Yet people believe religion is necessary for that; have they not taken a look around the world and seen that their way isn’t working?

People have formed the Christianity religion, so most people look at the Holy Bible as a Christian religious book, but is this a fact? You will find that the Holy Bible doesn’t mention anything at all about needing to belong to a certain religion or following traditions of men. It speaks against that in fact. (Mark 7:7-9, Colossians 2:8 KJV). Being a Christian simply means to be Christ-like, an actual follower of Jesus Christ; nothing about the religion and traditions they have formed which in most cases do not even match up with the Holy Bible. Must be why most self-professing Christians blend right in with the world. Jesus Christ and His disciples didn’t form any religious group. They simply went around preaching “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17 KJV), baptizing, healing the sick, casting out devils, etc. They taught the 'Word of GOD’, Who by the way is the Creator of all things, as if His Word isn’t sufficient enough. The bible says “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” Revelation 22:18-19 KJV. Sounds like serious business. These people may want to think twice about removing and adding words to scripture.

It’s broken down quite simple. Jesus Christ came and died for our sins because all sin has to be paid for, requiring a sacrifice. All we are required to do is show 'in action’ we believe in Him by being baptized in water (full body immersion, not sprinkled) where we will receive the Holy Spirit, which without we cannot get into heaven, according to John 3:5 KJV. We then must walk in “newness of life”; meaning, turning away from sin and walking how Jesus commands us, according to Romans 6:4 KJV. The scripture is clear in Revelation 14:12 KJV. “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus”. So who made up this thing that “we don’t have to keep the commandments anymore”, or that “it’s ok to sin”, or “once saved, always saved”? The oh-so-famous sinner’s prayer is nowhere in the Holy Bible. Yes, that’s right folks, saying a simple prayer will not, I repeat, will not save you!

Have you ever met the over-righteous religious person who has their nose stuck up in the air like they were born perfect and never made a mistake in life? How about the religious person who goes as far as hating others because they see they are in a certain type of sin? How about the religious self-professing Christian who looks no different from the rest of the world; watches worldly TV series, listens to vulgar music, parties, drinks, uses drugs, uses foul language, thinks their own personal opinion on scripture matters, etc. etc. How about the religious person who believes because they show up to church on Sunday (not even the true Sabbath according to GOD -Exodus 20:8-10 KJV) that they will make it to heaven, as if heaven is earned by how many church services you show up to or claiming to be a “good person” in your own eyes. Most of these people never even pick up a bible and read it! These types of people are called hypocrites and satan loves them because they cause others confusion and discouragement; mission accomplished, satan just caused another to walk away from the gospel of Jesus Christ, causing them to lose Salvation.

Let’s look back at the person calling themselves “a good person”. Can you imagine two criminals in court giving the judge their own personal opinions as to why they are a good person and should get away with a crime. That wont work in court with a judge, they will have to pay for the crime; neither will it work with GOD when we face HIM on judgement day. You don’t say the judge isn’t loving because he punished a criminal, you respect his judgment. So why do people say GOD isn’t loving because HE will do the same? HE is the Ultimate JUDGE, THE JUDGE over the judge. We have to play by HIS rules just like we have to play by the rules of this land. So remember; be baptized, receive the Holy Spirit, turn from sin and repent, obey GOD and Jesus, and walk in His ways to make it to heaven.

Too many people are too busy following passions and obsessions in this world; TV series, video games, celebrities, careers, movies, worldly music, school, night life, sports, activities, relationships, etc, etc. Sure, SOME of the things mentioned are fine to do, but for most it totally consumes their entire life, this is all that’s on their mind 24/7 making no time or consideration for their relationship with their Creator. The list goes on and on, satan has thousands of ways to distract us and keep our attention and focus off of GOD and Jesus Christ our Saviour.

The Holy Bible says clearly that satan is the deceiver and the author of confusion (“For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.” 1 Corinthians 14:33 KJV “And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” Revelation 12:9 KJV) and he has been appointed hell, he is extremely angry, hates GOD’s creation and wants to take as many of us down with him as he possibly can. What better way to do that than confuse people with a bunch of different religions, leading them away from accepting Jesus Christ. Again, sin has to be paid for, and without Jesus Christ as your Sacrifice you have to do the time, and follow the one you followed in this world (satan) to the same place he is going, hell. So it’s time we wake up, stop being lazy, and read the Holy Bible. There are thousands and thousands of accounts of the Holy Bible being true with prophecy coming to pass, people having near death experiences and actually going to heaven and hell, people having spiritual experiences, seeing Jesus and spirits, receiving healing and miracles in the Name of Jesus Christ, experiencing GOD working in their daily lives, etc. etc.

So now we can see clearly that religion most definitely in fact is NOT necessary. Tell satan he can keep his confusion, GOD’s Word is sufficient for you, that he might be getting over on the majority of the world but no longer over on you! How wicked satan is to deceive us in such a way; not to mention all the other things he puts us through constantly: fear, worry, depression, suicidal thoughts, illness, death, anger, sadness, the list goes on and on. According to 2 Timothy 1:7 KJV “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” Wow, what a wicked devil, is there really any wonder he’s headed to the lake of fire. I’m actually gonna start off with the latter here bc i think the former is probably gonna be longer anyway SO

In verses/aus where Tutu’s father isn’t a literal, actual spirit/deity/entity/god/what-have-ye (BNHA/affiliated spinoffs; duckverse/anthro/etc.; wizarding world; etc.):

She is… SOMEWHAT religious; definitely not overly so (see: not an asshole about it) but believes in angels/miracles/god/heaven and-or the afterlife. Definitely christianity-adjacent but not any particular type of christianity; possibly believes in hell/purgatory/some sort of punishment system after death but doesn’t really like to think about it, and her qualifications for GETTING there are stuff like, say, ‘committing many horrible murders’ or ‘being an unapologetic bigot’ as opposed to ‘not believing in jesus’ or ‘enjoying having sex’ or whatever.

She doesn’t really even, say, go to church regularly (she’s heckin BUSY come on), but does enjoy being IN church, especially alone; it’s like a bit of a meditation for her/helps her clear her head and feel closer to god/spirituality/the universe/heaven/her mom.

She also prays pretty much every day- specifically once in the morning and at night- but also prays informally whenever she feels the need, and probably wouldn’t own much religious iconography besides maybe a few cross necklaces– you know, small, tasteful, very expensive; delicate, real silver or gold, maybe a single pearl right in the middle of the cross but that’s about it.

Whereas on the OTHER hand

In main verse and associated, she’s… um.

Ok, so the Swan King may not technically be an actual GOD per se, but, well… He’s close. And people DO worship him. Not as many as there used to be, but they’re still there, and generally speaking basically everybody in the kingdom and round abouts that area observe it (swanianism or something idk) at least casually, by at least saying ‘swansdown’ and ‘swanfeathers’ and ‘by the swan’ instead of, for example, ‘oh my god’.

There’s, like, one official church, with stained glass and pews and everything, where all the high-class weddings and funerals and etc. get held there, but there aren’t really any ‘priests’ and they don’t really hold services.

There are lots and lots of old swan statues all over the area from centuries back, and while some of them got moved onto the tops of buildings/in fountains/ended up centers of various village squares, a lot of them had sort of… had temples built around them over the years- it just sorta happened- and that’s mainly where the average people observe their worship.

Also, the Schwanensee royal family featured pretty largely in the theology, being sort of… the same thing as saints in Catholicism; whenever anybody was born/died on the sacred island a messenger dove got sent over to the mainland and there was an announcement made about it to the village. The sacred island/lake wasn’t really thought of as a real place- it was more like if you could see heaven a little bit from a high window, or if you climbed a really tall tree.

So when the island was basically burned to the ground and almost all the royal family was killed, it was… um…..

Kind of a big fuckin’ deal.

When Tutu was rescued from the ruins, and everybody saw her, and everybody knew who she was, it was an even bigger deal. Everybody, in unison, basically decided that this tiny, traumatized, soot-covered, gray-feathered 6-year-old was the chosen one who was going to save them from everything from minor disagreements to, y’know, being ripped apart alive/having your heart and emotions pulled out and eaten by flocks of devil birds.

People even started… worshipping her.

After the initial adjustment period, she actually handled it pretty well; at least externally. Of course, anyone who knows anything about actually being royalty knows that the whole trick is to be royal on the outside and a cobbled-together mess sustained by stress like that physics thing where you hold up a legless table by strings and the buckets of water on it, but as she got older she actually managed to get more of a handle on it.

All in all, she’s…

I mean, she’s more or less got it. Apart from sudden attacks of crippling, soul-crushing anxiety. But she really, really, really wishes that people would stop, or at least give the whole actually worshipping her a rest a little. Generally speaking, everybody in the kingdom (or at least in the castle village) does genuinely like her, but sometimes she gets people who want to, like, kneel at her, or try to touch her dress/feathers as she walks past, and when she tries to talk to them they start flinching away and holding up their little carved swan amulet necklaces like they think it’ll protect them and she’s just like dad dammit i am trying to be friendly do i have to say ‘be not afraid’ or something every time i go up to introduce myself to someone???

But yeah, generally speaking it’s not really a problem from the swan-leaning side. Where it starts going wrong is the raven-leaning side.

The swan-leaning people are all in all, y’know, normal fucking people, and their religion-worship-belief-etc. only ever gets to obnoxious-christianity levels.

But the raven-leaning people can generally be qualified altogether as a crazy ransacking-and-pillaging murder cult.

And they actually have backup from real, actual infernal blood magic demon stuff, a seemingly infinite supply of flocks of murderbirds and various and sundry quirky miniboss squad-types, whereas the normal people really only have Tutu and, allegedly, the faerie folk (those affiliated with the Lilac Fairy/Queen, at least) but they haven’t been seen in generations so it’s really anyone’s guess on that.

They do a lot of, you know, general murder and mayhem- or at least they did, but the last really big thing they managed to pull off was the massacre on the sacred island, and technically speaking they actually failed to complete their objective because Queen Leda put Tutu to sleep with some ~magic~ and hid her in the hollow base of a swan statue in the middle of a rose thicket, which, by some sort of ‘coincidence’, didn’t seem to catch fire very much, and they were all too drunk on moonshine and bloodlust, and generally crazy and stupid, to actually look further for any survivors when everything was on fire and there were crows everywhere and they just sort of decided ‘yeah that’s it let’s go home’ and fucked off.

At the current time, most of them aren’t actually too much of a threat because most of them are the stupid crazy ~3edgy5me~ idiot types– y’know, the kind who’d, say, march around waving factory-produced tiki torches at night and demand a police escort if they’re gonna be shouting in the general vicinity of a pride event because they’re ‘fearful of their safety :’(’

so, like, nowadays they’re really only like Team Rocket-level nuisances on a day-to-day basis because the kingdom had learned from their history and swore in a lot more ‘guards’ and ‘knights’- enough to mostly keep the peace in pretty much every town unless things get really, really bad.

Uuuunfortunately, it’s not just idiots who want to wear black cloaks with pointy hoods to look like beaks and wave big curved swords around– i mean, it’s MOSTLY that, but also a lot of very smart, very greedy, bored, evil, and/or scheming people end up gravitating towards anything that’ll give them a lot of dumb people who they can tell what to do.

So occasionally- very occasionally- they actually do something that’s… actually impactful, and everybody who gets out of it in one piece talks about how fucked up that was and ‘curse those raven bastards’ and etc. etc., but the crowmen (as they’re informally known) are also surprisingly good at apparently vanishing without a trace so it’s hard to catch them or do anything really constructive about the problem as a whole.

Weeellllll, okay, ADMITTEDLY a few various gangs of them HAVE managed, by coincidence or the type of brief narrative luck that dumb people like that seem to have sometimes, to briefly kidnap Tutu, but she either gets rescued very quickly OR escapes by herself while they’re arguing with each other about HOW to kill her, WHETHER to kill her, and what the prospects of killing her now or maybe ransoming her and then killing her LATER would be, or they all sort of trip over their own and each other’s feet, cloaks, and swords and blunder their way into harmlessness in one way or another.

TL;DR Tutu sort of... IS a part of her religion like how Jesus is a part of Christianity/associates and all things considered she’s handling it pretty well. Her entire family was murdered by basically a crazy satanic cult who still run around causing problems, but not as much as they used to, so.... Does that count as religious oppression???

okay I’m so upset.

after watching the first ep of spn this season I had this INSANELY IN DEPTH fanfic idea and I was like HOLY SHIT I HAVE TO WRITE THIS OMFG LKAJF:ALJFKLDJF and I was putting it off and putting it off because I just kept thinking of more and more twists and backstories to go with it. Then the second episode aired, and I was like, welp.. Maybe I’ll wait until hellatus so I can use some canon in the newer episodes..

AND THEN FUCKING MICHAEL PARTIALLY STOLE MY IDEA!! So no If I write it i will look like I am super un-creative and just used part of the story...

Please ignore any typos I’m just throwing this together real quick. I’ve been thinking about this non stop for two weeks now..

Here is a quick, unorganized, mess of what the main events in my fanfic idea are:

like my idea was supposed to take place right after that scene in 14x01 where *SPOILER ALERT* Sam kills that demon and is all like “There will be no new King of Hell. Not today. Not ever. And if anyone wants the job, you can come through me. Understood? So, What's it gonna be?" and the demons hesitated for a few seconds then smoked out and Sam's all like "That's what I thought.“ I was gonna write a story where one of those demons is my OC and is so done with Sam’s shit that he decides to start his own super army to take back Hell. He knows he can kill Sam pretty easily if he got him alone, but that’s not good enough for him. He doesn’t want to just capture or kill him he wants to PULVERIZE him. And Michael is being a pain in the ass killing tons of monsters and any demons that get in the way so it pisses my OC off to the point that he wants to kill Michael. And take over Heaven because why not.

My OC was gonna come up with the idea where he wants to give monsters demon strength in addition to their own strength to become wickedly strong. At first he tried demon blood, it barely has any effect, and the few that it did work on, ended up turning against him.

Then he has the idea to ditch his meat suit and possess different monsters. Vamps, Shifters, Djinns, etc.. They each had different sets of pros and cons. Eventually he realizes that werewolves are his best option, due to their strength and agility. He possesses different werewolves and works his way up in packs trying to find the most powerful Alpha.

There are different breeds of wolves some only change on full moon, some can change whenever they want. Some have absolutely no control of their change others have little, some have complete control.

As he works his way through the ranks, he still isn’t satisfied. He wants to find the STRONGEST Werewolf there is. Eventually he learns of Fenrir Greyback, supposedly the most powerful werewolf that ever lived. He learns of Hogwarts from so many collected memories of student werewolves he has possessed. But the more and more he heard about Greyback, the more he learned about how little he was actually able to control his powers and that he was a hot-mess and crazy killing machine.

Disappointed by this, and about to leave Hogwarts and settle for a different wolf, he finds out about Remus Lupin.

Not only was Lupin a werewolf, he was also a WIZARD, and an Defense Against the DARK ARTS Professor at Hogwarts. Amazed by this information, my OC decides he HAS to possess Lupin. Lupin didn’t have complete control over his inner Moony either, but he was a better organized individual and he did have ALL of the knowledge and ability to preform dark spells that can inflict serious damage and easily kill. Greyback had the ability to perform magic as well, but he was killed by a couple of students, verses Lupin who was killed by a powerful Deathe Eater that took many lives. If he can control Lupin, he would not only has his werewolf strength and agility combined with his own Demon strength, but also ALL of that magic, and easier control of his inner wolf, Moony.

He can take down Sam, Michael, Heaven, Hell, and everything between..

So he finds out as much as he can about Lupin and devises a plan. He easily gets himself (as a student) into trouble at Hogwarts so that he can meet with the Headmaster of Hogwarts, Professor Minerva McGonagall. After they’re alone in the office, he jumps her, beats the shit out of her and FORCES her to take him back in time to back before Lupin is killed. It just so happens to be around the time the Order of the Phoenix was prime and before any serious attacks on Voldemort have occurred.

My OC isn’t strong enough to time travel without the help.

Long story short he possesses Lupin, petrifies McGonagall and goes back to the present and begins his rein.

Throughout his story-line, I was going to have cuts to Sam and Cas searching for Dean. Michael killing everyone he considered liars, trying to weed out the population to only people he could trust, Jack trying to learn how to be human and training to become a hunter with Bobby, and Mary working with all of the survivors from the alternate Earth taking down any monsters they can and watching for signs of Michael for Sam and Cas.

After Lupin is taken from the past and McGonagall is found by Kingsley Shacklebolt, she explains everything to him and the rest of The Order. The whole Order is extremely upset but have so much going on with Voldemort and the Death Eaters that they can’t do much about it. Plus Lupin being gone is one less member which doesn’t help their situation, so sending more members after him, will only cause harm to them. Meanwhile, Sirius Black refuses to not do anything and demands to go with McGonagall back to the future.

McGonagall and Black, back to the current time, try to meet with the current Minister of Magic, Hermione Granger, only to find out the second they return to the future that EVERYTHING changes. The plans made by The Order are altered and don’t work out, mostly due to missing two members and having different ideas for priorities. Greyback never died, Voldemort took over the entire Wizarding World and magic is no longer a secret to muggles who are terrified of everything happening.

Sam and Cas hunt Death Eaters in addition to monsters (which has been a normal thing since 1998 when the Battle of Hogwarts failed horribly.) Shit is chaotic AF. A few weeks later after a lot of extremely traumatic events. There’s going to be an insanely intense fight between Michael and my OC as Remus. McGonagall and Black are there hiding planning on waiting for my OC and Michael to fight each other almost to death than jump in to intervene.. Meanwhile, Sam, Castiel, Mary, Bobby and Jack are there hiding out waiting for the exact same thing to happen and try to save Dean. They accidentally meet at the scene of the fight, almost fight each other then find out they’re on the same team and decided to work together to stop the madness. There’s going to be an insanely painful scene where Sirius as Padfoot is fighting my OC as Remus/Moony and Sirius is going to be seriously injured by him and Remus will be fighting with Moony internally trying to force the demon out and self harming trying to escape to reality. He almost kills his Padfoot. Similar to that parallel in that scene in SPN where Cas almost kills dean and Dean breaks Naomi’s mind control on Cas, Padfoot will eventually get through to Remus enough for Remus and Moony to team up for a few seconds for just long enough to overthrown the demon, but the demon escapes.

No amount of exorcising can kick him out of his body, Sam and Castiel have tried relentlessly, but he used Lupin’s magic to hex a make-shift force-field to trap his demon soul into the body. When Lupin overpowered the Demon, there was a second where the hex was broken due to lack of concentration and he was able to smoke out of there.

Meanwhile, Michael isn’t giving up and things get so bad that it has come down to, stop trying to save dean, and just kill Michael. With the demon gone, everyone is now trying to kill Michael/Dean and it is pure carnage and mayhem. Eventually they succeed by combining multiple killing spells and and being stabbed by both Ruby’s Demon killing blade, Cas’ angel blade, and a shotgun blast to the head, all at the same time.. Michael and Dean are both obliterated. It seemed like extreme over-kill but it was just barely powerful enough to kill the Arch Angel.

The scene is incredibly painful and Cas tries and tries and tries to heal the damage but it’s too late. Dean is gone. Cas doesn’t give up, he keeps trying and trying until he is so physically exhausted he cannot physically use another ounce of his Angel juice. All he was able to really do was patch up most of his scars and mend some of his limbs back into place. Sirius and Remus, although extremely weak also tried to help, with their magic but both failed.

Minerva felt horrible watching and nobody noticed her slipping away, probably to prepare a potion to go back in time.

But then she comes back, with the Philosopher’s stone. Thought to have been destroyed by Dumbledore and Nicolas Flamel years ago. Apparently right after the Battle of Hogwarts, Minerva back in time to stop them from destroying it, so she can use it to talk to Dumbledore and so others can use it to talk to their loved ones who had passed away during the war in her timeline. She has had this stone in her possession ever since. Never once using it’s true power of Resurrection. She knows that the stone can only be used toe resurrect one soul before it destroys itself, so she’s been keeping it locked away somewhere only she knew the location for it.

She didn’t even hesitate, she went to work straight way. She used the stone and with a brilliant flash of green light and a collection of ghostly voices and an almost theatrical scene that took everyone’s breath away, everyone stared on at Dean. Nothing happened. Hours go by, Cas refused to leave Dean’s side and Sam tried to force himself to accept the reality of he situation and plan what to do with his body.

McGonagall gives Remus and Sirius ALL the information they need to actually stop Voldemort. She doesn’t tell them anything about their deaths. They asked her about that topic earlier on. She said that they didn’t die in her timeline, but that they must be dead in the current reality because of Voldemort, which is why they can’t find themselves. She lied to them because she can’t risk having more alterations to the timeline that could have catastrophic results again. She is very much away that she is basically sending them to their deaths for the greater good, and she is going to have to live with that for the rest of her life. She will never forgiver herself, but it is what must be done.

Sam, Cas, Mary, Bobby and Jack, distraught take Dean’s remains to Lawrence, Kansas. Planning on burying him properly where their story started.

Sam and Bobby dug the hole while Mary and Jack built a casket of sorts for him. They don’t want to burn his remains, its not something Dean would've wanted. They close the lid of the casket and carefully lower him into the ground. They say all that they can’t think to say and start to bury him. They all lingered afterwards, not wanting to leave. After about half an hour of staring at his grave, Sam starts to walk back to the car. They have a long drive back to the Bunker where he can properly mourn.

Cas, however, doesn’t step away from the grave. He is knelt down with his with his hands a few inches deep into the dirt just over the grave. He is still in shock and refuses to accept this. After awhile longer, his sadness turns into anger. He becomes uncontrollably angry and slams his hand down as hard as he can, disheveling the dirt around him. He looked up to the sky and is seconds away from screaming at Chuck for letting such a horrible thing happen. But just as he’s about to leap up to his feet and scream, a faint tapping noise catches his attention.

All of his anger suddenly gone, he, kneels forward and presses his ear almost to the ground, listens intently. He doesn’t hear anything, but he waits; still not giving up hope. After a few seconds of silence, he heard the sound again.

tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap....

He screams to Sam. “Do you hear that?” Sam quickly joins him, and listens. He hears nothing. Mary and Bobby and Jack hurry over and also hear nothing. They think Cas is making it up because he doesn’t want to accept it.

Cas insists on hearing a tapping noise and grabs the shovel out of the car and starts digging.

Bobby makes a move to try to stop him, saying don’t bother, the boy’s dead. Cas angrily shoves him away too hard and starts frantically digging. When he’s about halfway down and has screamed Deans’ name half a dozen times already, sudden Sam started to hear the tapping. Sam was doubtful for a second but then as Cas started digging deeper the sound started to sound like a knocking. Sam and Mary realized in unison that the impossible might have actually occurred. They both started digging with their hands alongside Cas as fast as they could. Still uncertain, with tears blurring their vision.

Cas still screaming Dean’s name and digging faster and faster. The knocking started sounding like banging, and there was another muffled sound accompanying it.

Almost through to the casket, the banging was getting louder and louder and the muffled voice was Dean’s voice screaming “Cas!” over and over again. They thew open the casket and destroyed the door in the process.

Dean was alive!! The stone worked! It took just over twenty four hours, but it worked!

Dean was groggy, and in a lot of pain. He could barely lift himself into a sitting position.

Cas hugged him tight then quickly healed his wounds as much as he could, before he and Sam lifted him out of the grave and onto solid ground.. Sam, Mary, Jack and Bobby each got a chance to hug him. All of them laughing is disbelief.

“Don’t let me say yes to another dick with wings--.” Dean coughed up some blood. “--Ever again.“

“Yo-ou bet.” Said Sam with a smile, trying to hide the break in his voice.
