JD Dancer Appreciation Vol. 3: Sarah Magassa 🦋

Sarah Magassa is absolutely stunning and so incredibly talented. I love how expressive she is in all of her maps. She makes every map feel so genuine with her facial expressions, and it always draws me in and makes it impossible not to really feel the emotions of any coach she’s portraying. Her expressions as Blessing are absolutely phenomenal. Her joy is so infectious! If Mickael Lips is the king of facial expressions, Sarah is 100% the queen! Also, I can’t talk about Sarah without mentioning that I’m a huge Mothigan stan. Sarah has been in a lot of maps for the franchise and I look forward to any and all that she does in the future!

It’s heartbreaking, I always feel so frustrated watching it cause has she not gone through enough in the 1st movie?? Why all this torment of ruining the only good night she had, the only love she felt?? But it’s still super entertaining and funny and genuine. Really felt like they had a story to tell instead of just doing it for the money like some sequels. And it’s a good story. The animation, music, comedy, the epic moments… all so very good. It’s a frustrating good time I think that’s how I feel.

-so we open with a voice we’ve never heard before and no visuals on this new person and then Bessie addresses the speaker as Anne so the viewer will automatically think Anne Boleyn, but then it’s Anne Hastings? I’m a history nerd and i was so confused i had to rewind. That’s bad direction/editing, imo. Was it really too hard to film Anne’s lips moving?

-”the blasted yew tree in the gardens” blasted as in by lightning, or as in he wanted to say bloody but can’t because his wife is there and she’s eight?

-”that’s a terrible idea” Catherine that is not how you manipulate Henry! -”finer minds than many men I know” yeah but that’s a low bar in this show, everyone’s on stupid pills. Also Wolsey and More were at least cordial IRL. There was mutual respect between the two, even tho they didn’t agree politically all the time. Then again, Wolsey is evil in this ‘verse, and the real TM was an ally of the queen, so...i guess they can death glare now.

-”I would have thought court politics no longer surprised you” “tell the scriptwriters that.”

-like I get it, I like that she’s using her brain, she has good reasons for the scheme even though it’s dishonest, I get that she wants to break up her betrothal as well, but she could be less black-and-white in her view of court politics.  It feels like whiplash when both scenes are in the same episode. 

-the court feels less depopulated this episode. That’s one good thing. It feels like an actual institution.

-Georgie Henley’s poor back... she is the saving grace of this episode. She can do so much with just her facial expressions.

I share your feelings about no trial in 'The Tudors', but I was wondering, among the other adaptations with the trial (Thousand days, 1970s six wives of H8, the Helena Bonham Carter one) which do you think is the best one?

It's honestly been a long time since I watched any of these all the way through, so...full disclosure, haha.

Helena Bonham Carter was the first Anne to steal my heart, and I have vivid memories of being wowed by her trial scene. However, I'm going to say Dorothy Tutin in The Six Wives of Henry VIII (1970) wins this one handily!

It's a long scene with plenty of opportunity for her to shine, as Anne did in reality. She's got a lot of dialogue and close-ups. Her costume is fabulous. She comes off as composed, witty, and commanding even though she is, in fact, powerless. In short, she embodies everything that the historical Anne was: fearless and possessed of “the true dignity of a queen.” Even before her excellent (though afaik fictional) declaration that the trial is a farce and a set-up, Tutin’s performance makes obvious to the audience that Anne is innocent and has been framed.

Another strength of this scene is that its focus is where it ought to be: on Anne. Cromwell and the judges are present, and they have dialogue, but Anne--dressed in this stunning crimson gown with gold trim (which you can see part of in the gif above)--is the center of the audience’s attention.

Unpopular opinion: I sometimes find Genevieve Bujold’s Anne somewhat over-the-top, and that’s true of some parts of the trial scene in Anne of the Thousand Days. (It also suffers, imo, from the anachronistic appearance of Henry at the end and, generally, from the comparative lack of focus.) When Dorothy Tutin proclaims “I am the queen, and I am entitled to better than you have given me,” she says it in a mature, regal way. Bujold has a similar line--“I am your queen, and as such, share the king’s immunity...”--but delivers it just differently enough to suggest insecurity bordering on desperation (at least to me).

And honestly? Part of it could also come down to the fact that Tutin just looks more like Anne than the gorgeous but almost girlishly pretty Bujold.

Bujold’s performance is still excellent, and I’d say it’s the second-best (at least of the trial scenes I’ve seen). Helena Bonham Carter’s is also still up there for me. It’s a lot shorter than Tutin’s, but her Anne is still dignified and confident...even if that whole miniseries is sort of a disaster. But her moment is (again) stolen by shots of Henry listening from the other room--Henry, ofc, never saw Anne again after her arrest.

Even Natalie Portman’s scene in The Other Boleyn Girl has merit, as unsympathetic as her Anne is in general. She does seem surprised when she’s convicted, though, when she would have known there was no chance she could have been acquitted. And, yet again, Henry is shown lurking in the shadows. The script also fails to let Anne proclaim her innocence one last time after the verdict.

Honorable mention goes to Emma Connell in the docudrama Anne and Henry: The Lovers Who Changed History. She doesn’t have a full trial scene or anything, but she does deliver some of what Anne said at the trial with great conviction.

I’m sure Claire Foy would have done well enough, too...if she’d been given the chance. But I don’t like anything about the trial scene in Wolf Hall. Not her costume, not the bad (lack of) lighting, not Foy’s body language or facial expressions or (totally inaccurate) lack of dialogue.

(I'm writing you here because you said no more got content on your main) I think what saved tros and the sequel trilogy as a whole from being an utter disaster and what made it better than got was the acting. with few exceptions such as lena and emilia and alfie and liam and maybe carice, as much screentime as she had, the acting wasn't the best, but somehow got has always been regarded as a masterpiece and this is why people are still more rabid about its ending than about the sequels ending.

From what I saw, TROS is indeed almost universally disliked by many portions of the fandom (reylos, anti reylos, poefinns, OT and Anakin fans etc.). As I made clear several times, I don't like the sequels and I don't consider them canon, but I can't not agree with you. G0T was always given so much credit, despite the many points that it failed at, and yeah, some actors were one of them. From an acting standpoint, the Disney SW is far superior. There isn't a single actor who didn't convey a wide array of feelings and didn't put depth into their characters and, most importantly, they worked hard to understand their characters, despite writing's shortcomings and the contradictions.

Whereas in G0T....Lena, Peter and Nik have always nailed every line, IMO, despite the sloppy writing. Even in the last season, when things made so little sense, they always shone in every scene they were in. Emilia had her moments in the early seasons, but she improved a lot and the last season was her best, despite what happened to her character, this is out of question. I always liked Kit, but I think this season's writing hurt him the most, in regards to giving him the opportunity to show emotions (in contrast to Emilia, whom this season's writing hurt her in terms of character arc, but allowed her to show all those emotions). And I don't blame Kit at all, alas, but what strong emotions can one pull from lines such as "UR MAH KWEEN" and "AH DUN WUNT IT" repeated over and over again? Isaac.. stopped showing emotions the moment Bran stopped being a real character and became the 3-EYED R4V3N machine. Maisie's lack of understanding of her own characters SHOWS in the latest seasons, when she apparently agrees with the consensus that Arya is a sociopathic hitman (which book!Arya isn't) or S/ansa's bodyguard and/or butler (yikes). And S/ophie....sorry, but no. Not only that her lack of understanding of her character REALLY SHOWS (just read all her obnoxious interviews where not only she refers to S/ansa as "me" but introduces her as this mastermind politician who is also a SJW woke warrior kween who must wear armour — as if this is book!S/ansa's point — and deserves to rule because she suffered the most — as if someome's worth is measured by the amount of pain they suffered, not to mention that S/ansa definitely isn't the one who suffered the most — and she will rule over a [her actual words] "democratic sort of kingdom" — everytime I read this BS, I lose 100 neurones), but her facial expressions were reduced to the one that she had for 3 seasons already and was meant to represent the Ice Queen bitch™️ (as in what Sophie herself and D&D think a strong woman should be), but in truth was something utterly deadpan. And other good actors such as Liam, Carice, Conleth, Gemma or Tobias Menzes (hope I spelled correctly) weren't even given enough screentime to increase the quality of the show.

I wasn't so involved in the ST cast, but from their interviews that I read, none of them tried to excuse or justify their character's actions when it wasn't necessary, nor they tried to tell the fans why they should like their character, and definitely nor did they say dumb shit like "democratic sort of kingdom" in a context where the form of government definitely wasn't even remotely close to democracy (because last time I checked, the form of government in Westeros was a feudal monarchy with its king having absolute power, so...the total opposite of democracy).

See, I never shied myself away from calling Rey a Mary Sue because yes, she is, IMO, and some people should learn to understand that not every criticism against female characters makes a person sexist. But while S/ansa was D&D's special snowflake and Sophie only made her even more obnoxious, Daisy's acting really saved the character in many ways and I do understand why so many people empathise with her. Daisy showed enough emotions to captivate the fans and make the root for their character despite the direction the storyline took, whereas only S/ansa fanatics are able to still feel whatever empathy and love for (at least) her show version.

I also understand why more people feel empathy towards Kylo Ren than for Jon Snow, because really, especially in the last season, Jon really was just a tired sad boi™️ whith only two lines and who end up sheding one manpain tear after cowardly stabbing his lover while kissing her (because let's be honest, D&D didn't know what to do with him at that point), while Adam's ability to convey such a wide array of emotions with his eyes and expressions and in his lines cannot be denied, whether you like Kylo Ren or not, and Kylo Ren ended up giving his life for the girl he undeniably fell in love with.

So yes, from an acting standpoint (and I would add visuals, characters and yes, writing, because nothing can outdo the G0T level of shitty writing, sorry), TR0S and ST is way better. One thing I can't excuse in none of them, however, was the treatment of the PoC. We know what happened to Missandei and that Greyworm was sidelined and while none of the ST PoC characters weren't killed off, Finn was pretty much sidelined in TLJ, Rose was introduced in TLJ and had just one minute of screentime in TR0S, and Poe, played by the Guatemalan Oscar Isaac, was revealed to be a former space narcos in TR0S, whereas in TLJ, his purpose was mostly arguing with Holdo (I really didn't like that movie and I didn't understand much of it, so this is all I can remember about him).

It has gotten really long but I couldn't help it because I liked your question way too much, but I don't want to invite people to engage with me (or attack me) in the ST/Reylo vs anti Reylo rhetoric/S/ansa rhetoric because again, I don't really care about the ST and I am done with G0T and Sandra. SCD Week 8 Thoughts

My totally unaffected by spoiler thoughts. Honest.

Alex and Neil - IT’S NEIL THIS TIME XD. This wasn’t Alex’s worst dance I’ve seen honestly, it wasn’t amazing but it wasn’t that bad. Her dynamics are getting better but she still needs more definition in her body, mainly in her arms she still looks like she’s at a wedding reception rather than a dance competition. The judges said she had energy but honestly it lacked energy for me, she had more in her Charleston. I’m definitely liking her a bit more now tho. Mayyyyybe cos her and Neil went to see Six the Musical which I have recently become obsessed with but I’M NOT BIASED PROMISE omg if they get to musical week ARE THEY GONNA DO A SIX SONG???

Mike and Katya - Woah I must be going crazy cos he got slagged off when I think it was one of his better dances! It wasn’t amazing obviously but he was so toned down here and he didn’t make the Paso face look stupid which I honestly thought he would. His shapes didn’t look awkward and he got the steps somewhat okay. I’m not gonna stand here and say it was amazing, like it still deserved to be bottom of the leaderboard (well maybe not over Alex oops don’t come for me) but wowzer it definitely wasn’t his worst.

Karim and Amy - Okay seriously Craig’s whole rise and fall thing in the Viennese Waltz HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH CRAIG?? FUCK. Karim as always looked like a great dancer, just unfortunate he messed up a bit. His frame was nice and he was leading the dance but yeah mistakes cost him an awful lot of points wow harsh.

Chris and Karen - KING IS STILL REIGNING OKAY AND YES I’M BIASED F OFF. Hoooooly craaaaap he was GOOD! He was good at the Tango! I’m amazed omg. Yes his frame still needs definition and it wasn’t perfect in terms of footwork but fuck he got some nice sharp dynamics in there! He was focused, his Tango face was pretty nice (lol I’d make it too silly so I admire comedians who can do it) and he led the dance great. He did sometimes seem a little bit tense and worried but like I would be too if I was dancing around a load of fire. I also get what Bruno was saying about the walking thing but WELL DONE CHRIS WE STAN.

( @missemperor ) Michelle and Giovanni - Michelle queen of ballroom is BACK. I always love her ballroom and she did not disappoint this week XD. As always her ballroom was neat and her frame was excellent. She transitioned into lifts pretty much effortlessly and ALL I WOULD SAY is there was one tiny moment she could have given a bit more energy to. But 36 honestly a bit harsh for me, I wouldn’t say it was perfect but in my head I score out of 40 rather than 10 so like 37 or 38 would have been more fitting but 36 is not bad at all XD.

Emma and Anton - I was hoping Emma would absolutely excel in Theatre/Jazz and HONESTLY it was about half way for me. She definitely looked in her element and when she got into the moves she looked AMAZING, she had some nice dynamics. However there was some timing issues where she wasn’t in sync with Anton, whether it was moving the hat or turning round sometimes she could be a bit behind. I STILL THINK IT WAS GREAT. Just if she were to do it again timing and synchronisation would be top priority IMO.

Saffron and AJ - Okay yes it was great almost flawless right yeah whatever. Sorry I really don’t like her even if she is great at ballroom XD. Idk what it was about this one that didn’t impress me as much as the Foxtrot, it just didn’t. Maybe cos AJ used that move AGAIN that he used in the Paso and maybe the Contemporary (I can’t remember) where she’s on one leg and AJ’s moving round so she’s turning on the ball of her foot, whenever they do that I just want to PUSH SAFFRON’S SHOULDER BACK. LIKE JUST MOVE YOUR SHOULDER BACK AND YOUR ARM WILL MOVE BACK AND IT WON’T LOOK SO DAMN AWKWARD. Right think I got it all out of me XD. Maybe my problem was also her facial expressions but it didn’t bother me in the Foxtrot so IDK SOMETHING DIDN’T SIT RIGHT FOR ME WITH THIS DANCE but I do agree that it deserved a high score. MAYBE NOT TENS, but a high score.

Kelvin and Oti - Omg I didn’t realise during song list time but THIS SONG ALWAYS REMINDS ME OF MAX AND PADDY FUCK XD. I mean Kelvin is northern so I guess it works XD. Yay Oti delivered a good week 8 Salsa!! AS MUCH AS I LOVE SWANNY I’m not blind XD. I mean if Bruno says the hips were back then the hips were back I was more focusing on dancing like but cool XD. He brought back the flow in his upper body that he had from the Samba that made me love him from the start XD. I don’t think it was perfect, sometimes he looked a bit hesitant on lifts but it was definitely AMAZING!

Right final thoughts, favourites were the usual (YES I’M BIASED), Michelle and Giovanni and Kelvin and Oti. Least favourite oooooo I’m gonna go for Alex and Neil. Honestly fight me on this but the judges are being way too lenient with her, I mean she’s gonna get through anyway cos she’s with Neil you don’t have to be so generous XD. Was quite an interesting week and quite a high standard as well!

one thing that's annoying me a little--and this is broader, I see it in a lot of fiction--is that Dean is being presented as A Pretty Good Liar. in this ep he manages to talk the two of them out of trouble REALLY gracefully. but so far when we've seen him lying on screen it's looked incredibly, well, bad. it looks like he's lying. and I know they're kinda doing that to telegraph to viewers that he's lying, but also we generally... know the truth? he could be lying much more fluently and it would still work. and this isn't just spn! a LOT of fiction that I see does this and it's so annoying. just SHOW them being good at lying!

The small woman huffed as she paused kneading the dough to wipe at the sweat on her brow with the back of her hand, leaving behind a streak of flour before returning to folding and punching the stick lump. She dropped the ball of uncooked bread into the wooden bowl, covering it with a piece of cloth before turning to the water bucket to wet her hands. She used the hem of her apron to dry her fists, pulling off the last strings of dough that stuck to her knuckles before leaning against the counter. That was the last loaf to set. Once it and the few others finished rising it would be time to bake. There was a big feast tonight to celebrate the men leaving to raid in the morning.

It wasn’t long after being sold into King Ragnar’s house that her talents for cooking were recognized. The oldest of the slaves, and mother hen to all the younger girls, who was named Aug promptly put her to the task of preparing meals. This became her main duties in the house, which she didn't mind. She enjoyed staying in the kitchen, never having to interact directly with any of the masters beside Queen Aslaug, who occasionally stopped into make sure the food was being done correctly.

That was until one evening when a younger thrall named Britt hurried in, searching for her. She was busy but the girl stated one of the Ragnarssons had asked for her specifically. She dropped the knife she was holding, as she felt an icy grip around her insides. She panicked, instantly worrying which of the four young men found it necessary to speak with her, and why. She heard the rumors about each of them and she feared that it was the youngest, Ivar who beckoned her fretting that he would have nothing good to say.

Following the the head of fine, blond hair bobbing through the crowded hall, the cook was lead to the main table. Holding a hand out, he urged the cook forward, brushing his fingers against her elbow as he spoke quickly, in a jovial tone.

The slave just stared at him blankly before looking to Britt who gave her a loose translation of his praise for her cooking. She blushed looking back to him and bowing her head before stuttering out one of the only words she knew of his language, “Takk.”

Ubbe and Sigurd finally let go and burst out laughing at their brother’s big, puppy-dog eyes as he watched the girl nearly run back to the kitchen. Neither were surprised he’d set his sights on the plump slave who seemed to always be covered in flour.

“How can you woo her, if she can’t even understand you?” Sigurd teased once Hvitserk returned to his food.

Language barriers did not stop the prince. He began to regularly pop into the kitchen for food, rather than sending a slave to fetch him something. Once there, he’d find a reason to hang around, watching her work. He would talk, telling her about his day or his father. At first she was flustered by his presence but she enjoyed the company, and calming cadence of his voice though she couldn’t fully comprehend what he said.

Due to the fact of her immersion added with Hvitserk’s constant babbling, she slowly found herself leaning his tongue. At night she practiced with Britt, but still kept mute around Hvitserk out of embarrassment at her novice skills of communication.

Finally one day, he was rambling about his youngest sibling’s antics on the training field when she asked him, “Why is Ivar cruel?” He stopped in the middle of tearing off a piece of bread from the roll in his grasp to stare at her blankly, surprised by the sound of her voice.

A smile pulled at his cheeks when he shrugged, “Because Ivar is Ivar. He has always been this way.”

Once Hvitserk knew she could respond their conversations were decidedly less one sided. She would respond to what she could and he did his best to help her understand when she was confused. Hvitserk also grew decidedly more flirtatious. Before, he had made flippant provocative comments off the cuff, knowing they’d go over her head. She’d still catch the way he’d watch her when she was bent over the hearth, checking on the bubbling broth.

Now he’d do whatever he could to make her blush. He loved the way she’d yelp in surprise when he’d sneak up while her back was turned, wrapping his fingers around her hips. “That smells delicious,” he would comment in a low voice, his lips next her her ear as he took in the sent of her hair rather than the food she was preparing.

He was drunk the first time he backed her into a corner. His wisps of facial hair tickled at her sensitive skin while he kissed her neck, pulling giggles from her lips as her petite hands came to rest on his chest. Everything about her was soft and warm under his touch. He pulled her against himself, guiding his knee between her thighs before finally bringing his lips to hers. Hvitserk moaned as she molded her lips with his, eagerly welcoming him into her.

“What is going on?” Aug shouted, interrupting the pair.

Both were panting as Hvitserk straightened and looked over his shoulder. “We were just talking.” He tried the excuse but it was obvious that Aug wasn’t buying it. She glared at him in a way that said everything; he needed to leave the kitchen promptly and let the girl return to her duties.

Leaving the bread to rise undisturbed, the cook sighed as she sat on the short three-legged stool, leaning her head back to rest against the wall. She let her eyes shut while keeping time in her mind so the dough wouldn’t sit for too long.

“There you are,” a familiar voice spoke. She cracked open her eyelid and tried not to smile when she spotted Hvitserk in the doorway.

“I am always here,” she stated, furrowing her brow as she rose to meet him, slightly confused by what he meant. His arms quickly found their way, snaking around her torso, pulling her in tight.

“Mm, yes that is why this is my favorite place to be,” he hummed as his kissed along her cheek before capturing her mouth with his. She grew bashful with his praise, looking away as she blushed and gnawed on her lip. He nipped at the corner of her jaw, just below her ear, while his hands began to roam. The left left settled on her ass, cupping the cheek with the broad expanse of his fingers while the other tugged at the back of her thigh, drawing it up to line with his waist. “Right here between your knees,” he mumbled between kisses as he took a breath. She smoothed her palms across his firm torso before tangling her fingers into the hair on the back of his scalp, bring his face back to hers.

Hvitserk pulled at her bottom lip before pausing to rest his forehead against hers. He took a deep breath through his nose, keeping his eyes screwed shut before he spoke. “I want you in my bed so badly. I want to feel you naked underneath me, calling my name as I make you come.”

She let out a small squeak in response, shocked by the bit she could comprehend. Hvitserk pulled back in surprise for a moment, gazing down at her blushing cheeks. “Don’t you want me?” he asked, misreading her expression.

“No, I do,” she quickly replied, cupping his cheeks. “But I cannot.”

“I’m a son of Ragnar and a prince of Kattegat, I can have whatever I wish, and no one can say different. Even if it’s you that I want.” He smirked as he pulled her closer, squeezing her bottom before continuing, “And Aug is busy in the main hall, I checked. She won’t be bothering us.”

The cook was already well aware of Aug’s tasks for the day, she knew they would not be disturbed. She said nothing, instead gnawing on her lip in annoyance that he was missing what she meant, upset with her own inability to clearly communicate. “I cannot...” she blushed, looking away before finally admitting. “I cannot say your name.”

“Really?” With a gentle finger on her chin, Hvitserk guided her to look back at him, “It’s not hard, just try.” He repeated the syllables slowly for her to repeat, drawing each sound out in example.

“Havetsick,” she repeated him, giving her best attempt to mimic the sounds. He bit his inner cheek to keep from laughing but she could see the humorous glint in his eye. With a scoff she pushed against his chest, trying to wiggle her way out of his arms. “Is it so funny? The way I speak? Britt, she laughs at me, too.”

“I’m not laughing at you,” he quickly countered, holding her shoulders so she remained against him, leaning into his chest as he lifted one palm to pet at her hair. “I love the way you talk, I think it’s adorable. I’m always excited to hear your voice.”

“You mean this, truly?” she questioned in a breathy voice. He arched his head forward, rubbing their noses briefly before gently pressing a kiss to her lips. Hvitserk could feel the moment she conceded, smiling as she let go and melted into him.
