Self Fic Recs
Tagged by @cha-melodius. Thank you, this was an interesting moment of reflection.
So, wanted to get some hiatus rec lists going and encourage some self promo in my friends so how about sharing your top fics no matter how big or small - give us the links to your wonderful words with the Most hits/Most kudos/Most comments/Most bookmarks /Most words/Least words
Whelp, there's a pattern here.
Most hits, kudos, comments, bookmarks: Praying for Salvation (Priley, Midnight Mass)
This is my first-ever published fic. It started as a one shot, then grew and is currently ongoing. It might not have happened if not for the talk about John's spread legs. That man is a menace.
Anyway, it's about Riley getting drawn in by the priest while seeking to make amends for his sins.
Most words: Petals In A Storm (Jaskel and Saskier, The Witcher)
My first bang fic. It was a labour of love and it's 51,925 words. My baby Jaskier has so much trauma that doesn't get resolved in full, but he does learn to accept love where it is given. Features art by @flightsfancy1.
Least words: You're Beautiful (Lokius, Loki Series)
Just me experimenting with some poetry. It's only 46 words. Mobius muses about how beautiful Loki looks on his knees. My only first-person piece, I think.
Tagging: @zara2148 @kit-middleton @dapperwerewolf @mimisempai @rins-love-wins @insert-witty-user-name-here @jesskier @kingeomer @kickassfu @mojowitchcraft @dapandapod @echo-bleu @rauchendesgnu @xianvar @unexpected-readings-of-poetry and, of course, @flightsfancy1 and anyone else who wants to do it.

I kinda don't understand why there was even a Wild Card in the first place.
In Kunigami's words, Wild Card was some kind of experiment to create a player with physical stats and/or abilities which are par with Noa's. It's, basically, making a copy of Noa, but.. why? There's was no need of it when Blue Lock already had this dude:
Are you getting me?
Alright, alright, I understand that a holographic robot would be much different than a human being, but it's not like Kunigami acts completely like Noa either—the orange head is way too aggressive.
Before anyone says, "Oh! It's the built-up frustration 'cause of the Wild Card!" let me remind you that Kunigami was aggressive way before that too—rewatch the first selection's matches, you'll understand what I'm tryna say. Though I won't deny that Wild Card definitely had, at least, some kind of contribution.
I mean, we all know how calm and nearly emotionless Noa behaves. Yes, yes, there are instances where this Master Striker has shown agitation:
Dim and Dimmer, LOL!
But despite that, Noa still looks very calm, y'know, unlike Kunigami who has shown visible irritation throughout NEL, and we have never seen Ego calling out on it too. So, does this mean that one's behaviour doesn't matter as long as they have the same physical stats as the world's (current) best striker? Then shouldn't Ego have invested more on Blue Locker's physical attributes to make them tough and strong and ambidextrous like Noa? Hm?
Also, Ego once said this:
Kunigami being some kind of obstacle or benchmark for the other Blue Lock-ers to overcome to improve themselves sounds a lot reasonable, but isn't it unfair? I mean, except BM, every other team—FC Barcha, Manshine City, Ubers, and PxG—only played with (against) Kunigami ONLY once meanwhile BM got to play with him in four matches!
Are you getting me?
Well, the main reason for this post was actually this panel:
Everybody knew that Kunigami was going to have some kind of rage against Shidou in the match, but the sheer intensity with which the ginger actually went against the blond caught me off guard. And it made me wonder why exactly Kunigami is mad at Shidou—is it simply because he got kicked out of Blue Lock because of him? Is it because he lost the match to him? Or is it because he think he (Shidou) is the reason why he (Kunigami) lost his ego?
Personally, I don't have any confident answer to any of my own questions, but I'm pretty confident that this (maybe one sided?) rivalry will make a lot of sense after Shidou's backstory is revealed—just like Kaiser's behaviour towards Isagi started to make sense after his backstory was revealed—because I really don't buy that Shidou thought Kunigami wasn't a good enough player when someone like Barou gave some kind of indirect acknowledgement to Kuni:
Considering this Ubers' King's behaviour, being 'wanted' by him is a pretty big praise.
What do you guys think?

ENJOY!
"Dr. Y/L/N, you will be following Dr. Park Seonghwa today," your supervisor said as she finished her pep-talk of the day. Your supervisor, Dr. Long was a very kind and positive woman, always quirky and bright and she gathered her interns every morning before work to cheer them up and motivate them.
You'd been an intern for a few months and you were slowly getting used to the hard work. You vaguely knew dr. Park from several heroic stories. All the women seemed to swoon over him as they gossiped about his fine looks every day.
Pediatrics was not the field you wanted to pursue but you figured a look couldn't hurt. You met dr. Park Seonghwa right in front of room 204 and suddenly you understood why all the women gushed over his beauty.
Dr. Seonghwa was a tall man with a sleek and defined look. His hair was slightly curly, tucked behind his ear while a few front pieces fell in front of his eyes. His nose was prominent, eyes big like boba pearls and lips thick and they looked like they'd be softer than all the fluffy kittens in the world. God damn.
"H-Hi, dr. Park, I'm your intern for the day," you introduced yourself. "Right, Y/N, I got the note that you'd walk with me today. If you have any questions let me know, okay? Let's get inside now, we're here to see a ten year old boy pre-op**," Seonghwa said as he guided you into the room.
"Good morning Kang-In, you look bright this morning," Seonghwa said with a smile as he greeted the boy named Kang-In. "Thanks doc, I'm feeling uplifted, I'm finally getting my surgery today! I've waited two whole years for my new heart."
"That's right, this is Y/N, she's my intern for the day, she will do a quick exam on you to check up on your stats."
Seonghwa watched you do the exam on the boy and asked you several questions to test your knowledge and he was surprised at your smart and quick answers. You got a kick out of it, watching his impressed expression and his small nodds.
The entire day was pretty fun, Seonghwa was still quite a young doctor and he told about his job with a lot of passion which intrigued you. When you laid in the on-call room that night you couldn't sleep. All you could think of was Seonghwa, the living example of perfection.
You looked around briefly, you're all alone. Would it be horrible if you slipped your hands into your panties just for a little bit? Deciding it would be okay you took your pants off, kicking it on the floor. You opened your legs and felt the damp spot on your underwear. You closed your eyes and slid your hand in your panties, rubbing your wet folds. "Mmh doctor," you moaned softly as you rubbed your clit, coating it with your arousal.
Suddenly the door opened and revealed dr. Park, his eyes widened at the sight of your bare cunt right in front of him. He closed the door instantly and froze for a few seconds just like you. ''What the hell are you doing?'' ''U-Uhm... Just...'' you stammered, not knowing what to do when your superior walks in on you touching yourself to the thought of him. ''S-Sorry sir, fuck I just-''
''Open those legs wider, I can't see it well enough.''
You felt like your heart stopped at those words, breath hitching in your throat. ''W-What? Sir...'' ''Well you obviously wanted someone to walk in on you, so you should at least give me a good show, right?''
You bit your lip and spread your legs wider, giving him a good view on your wet cunt. ''Why give a show when you could come here and taste it?'' This sentence went straight to Seonghwa's dick and before he could hold himself back he kneeled down in front of you, eyeing your glistening wet cunt up and down ''Christ,'' he cursed underneath his breath, ''What a beautiful fucking pussy... Who got you this wet, Y/N?''
Seonghwa licked a stripe up your pussy, swirling his tongue around your clit. ''Y-You, I was thinking about you. Fuck, you're so hot doctor, you are so hot I couldn't help but think of having your cock stuffed inside me,'' you cried out. ''Fuck, you're such a little minx, I love slutty interns,'' he grunted against your pussy, lapping it up and down. His long and skillful tongue felt warm on your labia. Seonghwa's eyes stared deep into your soul, making you whimper.
''Fuck, I'll be your slutty intern, doctor,'' you moaned as Seonghwa dug his tongue deep into your core, fucking it in and out of your hole. You guessed he must fool around with all the women around here but you didn't care. In the moment you wanted nothing more than be used by him.
Your walls clenched around his tongue and you whined out his name. ''Please, it's not enough,'' you cried, ''I need your cock sir, please.'' He smirked against your pussy and lapped at your clit, sending shivers down your spine. Your hands desperately reached for his head full of curly raven locks of hair, grabbing them and pulling them slightly, making the doctor moan into your core. You wanted him badly but he would not budge, eating your pussy like a starved man.
''Fuck, you're such a good little wet slut, all for me to ruin, keep begging for my cock, princess,'' he grunted as he worked on your clit, sucking and biting on it as his nails dug into the flesh of your thighs. ''Y-Yes, yours, doctor! Y-yours to ruin!'' It was wrong, God, it was so wrong of you to sleep with him but why did it feel so good then?
Seonghwa pulled those thoughts right out of your brain again as he sucked particularly hard on your clit, making your hips buck up. You felt the familiar warmth coil in your abdomen and your body grew restless. He held you down and stopped you from moving and you couldn't do anything else but let him make you come undone.
The orgasm hit you like a truck, washing over you as you chanted his name over and over. Seonghwa rode out your high with his delicious tongue and finished it off by pressing soft kisses over your used pussy and thighs. He hurried to pull down his pants and underwear and get on top of you, lifting your legs up and letting them rest on his shoulders. Seonghwa gave you no warning as he pushed inside you, nearly folding you in half as he did.
Soon he started moving at a fast pace, the sound of skin slapping together filling the room definitely able to be heard on the other side of the door. You could swear you heard a few giggles coming from the hallway but Seonghwa didn't accept the fact that your thoughts were drifting off again. He went harder, faster and with his fingers he grabbed your chin, forcing your mouth open. He spat in your mouth and ordered you to swallow, as you did.
A cry left your lips when he suddenly seemed to have found a sensitive spot inside you, something not many of your past lovers were able to do. ''You're such a good fucking slut for me, such a cute little pussy for me to fuck. You're gonna let me do this to you often, hm? Gonna let me fuck this pussy over and over whenever I want it, right?''
You mewled at his words and could only whine and nodd your head, nothing else processing in your head. The sensitiveness of your previous orgasm was building up to a second one and before you knew it you were clenching down on his cock, coming once more for him. ''That's a fucking good slut, that's it,'' he praised you.
He fucked you roughly, seemingly chasing his own orgasm. The doctor pounded into your pussy with such force you nearly forgot how to breathe. You dug your nails into the skin of his shoulders, moaning over and over. He cursed underneath his breath and his thrusts grew sloppier. ''You're gonna let me breed this pretty pussy right? Gonna let me fill it up with my cum? You're such a good little slut, such a good little fucktoy! Fuck, take it baby, take my fucking load, that's it!''
Seonghwa came with a loud moan and his hips stilled, cum spurting deep inside you. The two of you panted softly as he pulled out and laid down next to you. Before you could say anything to him his pager went off and you sighed. He pulled his underwear and pants up and hopped off the bed. ''This isn't over yet,'' he says with a wink before exiting the on-call room.
You sighed deeply and squirmed a little, giddy with the thought of continuing later on.

fic author q&a <3
tagged (kinda but i wanted to join bc it looked fun lol) by @zannolin the beloved
why do you write fanfic?
because it's so so so much fun. because i think about the characters too much to just not Do anything with them, you know?
but mostly, it's a case of, "I'm writing this because I want to read this."
which of your posted stories do you think of the most even though the story is "finished"?
i mean, technically, passerine because I have a copy of it sitting above my study desk so every time I look up I think "oh damn yeah i wrote that. insane"
but, creatively, i think about the challengers series a lot because i feel like i have one more story out of me for it but i just don't know What yet
if you could give yourself fic advice from when you first started writing fic, what would that advice be?
hmmmm i don't think i have any because my relationship with fic writing now is the same as my relationship to fic writing then. it's all just fun :)
what's your relationship to fic stats?
eh i don't really care about them. i generally don't look at kudos and hits. but comments and the little notes people put on bookmarks? now Those i will refresh for every time
is there a pairing or scenario or friendship that you miss writing? if so, why? if not, why not?
how do i answer this without kicking at a hornet's nest. i guess if you know, you know. That Era really was a great time to be alive as a genfic writer. unfortunately, *waves vaguely*
what motivates you to write?
the fact that when you finish writing, you get to read it. and it's tailor-made for you, with everything you want from a fic, because YOU put it all there!! it's like serving yourself a plate of eggs done just how you like them
also, i look forward to comments every time just to know i'm not the only one going insane over it lol
why do you write for the fandom(s) you write for?
no other reason than i want to, i guess. i love the story. i want to expand on it. and that's how the insanity starts, baby
if you're stuck writing a WIP, what do you do?
just put it down. inspiration will find me eventually. i'm not in any rush :)
what do you wish people knew about comments?
when you quote the exact lines that made you feel something. THAT. that could be your entire comment and i'd still be twirling my feet kicking my hair. genuinely when people quote my lines in their comments AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA <- me going crazy
maybe there's a question you wish had been on here. what's that question (and answer)?
The line you're most proud of.
"... to be able to love something enough to also love what grew from its ruins," is still so beloved by me because it was genuinely something i'd felt in my personal life for so long but could only put into words when i was writing it for the fic. it was a lightning bolt of an epiphany that wouldn't have been possible if i hadn't been writing. writing fic saves lives, folks!
tagging literally anyone who sees this because i want to pick at everyone's brain

So, uh, I know that this place is mostly for writing, but making your own TTRPG system kinda qualifies as writing, doesn't it?
Either way - here's a fighting-related question that came up during my process making it. Is fear an important aspect of combat? Small-scale combat, to be specific, not the kind where you see a thousand of knights fight another thousand of knights.
Would wounds (or even hits that are strong enough to be felt through armour) inflict noticeable stress to a well-trained soldier? Would it be bad enough to, potentially, make them panic, even if they aren't in any actual danger yet? Or would that mostly be a problem with inexperienced fighters, and training/combat experience could make someone relatively desensitized to that sort of thing?
It's probably worded weirdly, I know, but, in general, what I'm trying to ask here is - should one consider stress/fear as a thing that might change the tides mid-combat, even if cowardice (or anything similar) isn't a major character trait for neither of the combatants?
This one isn't really writing, it's a game design question, and fully answering it is going to require digging a lot deeper into what you're trying to do with the game. It is entirely reasonable for your character to still suffer some lesser injuries from hits their armor absorbed, and for you to have a secondary mental stat that gauges your character's mental ability to keep functional. Warhammer's Morale and the Storyteller system's Willpower stats come to mind as examples of this. Also Call of Cthulhu's Sanity stat, though that's a little more involved.
So in game design, you need to decide how you want combat to feel. And, this can be anything from gritty realism to a fun power fantasy. In fact, the genre of your game will heavily determine how you want your systems to shape your experience.
I can't remember if Warhammer tabletop does this, or if I'm conflating it with Gladius and Dawn of War, but, in Warhammer your units actually have a separate morale hitpool. Obviously, for a lot of armies in Warhammer, keeping your units fighting against horrific, unknowable abominations is a major theme, so a main system (and a part of every unit stat card) is how much stress they can take before they have a complete nervous breakdown, and start running in the opposite direction. In fact, in tabletop, the game actually has multiple systems evaluating whether your own units will actually follow their orders at all. The difficulty of commanding troops against impossible threats is a central theme of the systemic narrative Warhammer is trying to create, so it gets multiple top level systems.
Compare that to D&D, where there are no top level systems regarding the mental state of your characters. They signed up to fight unknowable abominations, and magpie their way through the world, so when they encounter something genuinely unnerving, that gets special rules on that monster. It's not part of the power fantasy of D&D (most of the time.) So when it does show up, it just gets attached as an addendum to an existing rule system or as a special rule for one creature.
So, what does your game system want?
If you want a small scale, sword & sorcery brawler, you probably don't need to model their mental state, or how afraid they are. You really need to know if their morale is high, and when it is high, you can probably handle that with simple conditional buffs. In fact, this is probably a system where you wouldn't even want to model a low mental state, unless things are truly dire, or supernaturally oppressed. (Again, with special rule cases for that, because it's not going to come up very often.)
This probably should have been a few paragraphs earlier, but just looking at an RPG's character sheet can often tell you a lot about what the designer intended for their game. The things your players are going to have to interact with regularly need dedicated systems. Stuff that comes up rarely, shouldn't get dedicated systems. (And, this is a very real issue with a lot of RPGs, where there are a lot of different systems to keep track of, that could have been scrubbed out and set aside as flavor or special rules. Including with D&D.)
If your primary focus is a kind of horror RPG, then you need those extra systems. You're going to be dealing with them constantly. You might want an attribute called Resolve (or whatever) to specifically model how well a character handles dealing with horrific situations, or seeing their friends ripped to shreds. You might also have a separate tracked HP pool (similar to how Darkest Dungeon handles it) specifically focused on their ability to manage psychological strain.
If you're going for that, psychological damage can be a lot more deciduous in a tabletop environment, because you cannot armor yourself against that. Characters might be able to have some psychological resistance through strenuous mental conditioning, but again, as the game designer, you control exactly how much a player can stack up, so you can balance around the absolute maximum damage that a player could mitigate, while also keeping in mind how much the raw damage would do to a defenseless character.
You could have a rule system where characters can pretty reliably soak off most of the physical damage, but suffer serious attrition due to psychological (or, even magical) damage that they couldn't mitigate.
How armor works in your game is a similar situation, where the rules need to follow the kind of experience you're trying to create. However, unlike dealing with psychological strain, armor rules also need to consider how easy they are to implement at the table. A lot of CRPGs use % based armor mitigation, and that's great, if you have a computer that can crunch those numbers for you. If you're at the table and rolling 3d8, it's going to be a lot more awkward to figure out what 43% mitigation will do to your resulting values. So, it's a lot easier to simply say that armor subtracts X from incoming hits. Like, “Armor 2 means that each incoming attack does two less damage.” This starts to run into a balance problem. In theory, a character with sufficient armor might be able to mitigate all incoming damage (and you will have players who stack defense with this specific goal in mind. You can't escape that.)
This leads to one of my favorite solutions for this. I think it was J.E. Sawyer's Fallout 3 that never happened, but the idea is that if you're taking damage from hits, and your armor is absorbing that, it goes into a second, less severe, damage category. To use the example of White Wolf's Storyteller system, you convert lethal damage into bashing. It can still kill your characters, but it reduces the overall effect of that damage in the moment, makes it a lot easier to recover from, but also doesn't let them just walk in and soak all the damage without issue. So, for example, your character has Armor 4, an enemy swings on them for 8 lethal damage, and 4 points of damage are converted to bashing. (When their lethal + bashing damage reaches their HP pool then they're downed or knocked out), but they're not in danger of dying unless they take more lethal damage, or are suffering from some ongoing damage effect (like bleeding.)
Another, more lethal option I really liked from a D20 system (so, basically 3.5e D&D), was Star Wars's vitality system. The Wizards of the Coast Star Wars RPG had two HP pools. One was the normal hit dice per level based on class from D&D called Vitality (if you ever wondered why your HP in KotOR was called Vitality, this is why.) The second pool was Wounds. This was equal to your Constitution score. So, if you had CON 12, you could take 12 wound points. If you ran out of Vitality, damage would apply directly to your wound pool, and if you ran out of wound points, you were dead. Just, dead. No downed state, no stabilizing, you were toast. And, here's the thing that I might be misremembering, but if you critically hit someone, instead of multiplying your damage, your damage bypassed their vitality and went directly to wounds. This meant you had a fairly normal D&D rule set that could turn lethal with very little warning. Still a concept from game design that I like to keep in mind, because it creates a very dangerous feel in combat. Because of how the flavor was written, Vitality damage didn't even necessarily mean your character was being directly harmed. Taking damage from vitality might mean your character narrowly escaped getting hit by a blaster bolt, or that they effectively parried an incoming lightsaber attack. It still had the effect of wearing characters down over time without automatically meaning that they were suffering absolutely implausible amounts of injuries (though it could, also mean that your character had suffered minor cuts and scrapes or that their armor had taken a few hits for them.)
Something that gives the player a bit more control over their own durability would be to give items HP pools of their own. This isn't a normal item deterioration ruleset, but rather you're giving their armor a fixed amount of HP, that it can absorb in their place. So, to refresh that example above, if your character has Armor 4, and they're hit for 8 damage, instead of taking 4 bashing, they might choose to have that damage dealt directly to their armor. (And, this is a case where the decision to how to deal with that damage could be in the player's hands if you wanted. It gives them some proactive agency while taking damage, which is rare in TTRPGs.) You could even use this for a blowthrough rule, where if a character takes more damage in a single hit than their armor's remaining HP, the armor is destroyed and offers no protection from that attack. This, again, plays more into horror, as their armor will be wearing down over time, and if they're not performing regular maintenance to try to keep it working, could potentially fail them in combat. (It also creates a very cathartic moment for players to sheer through an enemy's armor, dropping them on the spot.)
All of this can and really should be, tuned for your systems and numbers. I have biases on exactly how granular I like my TTRPGs, but that doesn't mean you're tied to those values, and some people really do like the triple digit HP pools of high level characters in D&D and Pathfinder. I'm not going to say you're wrong for that, because I don't think you are, but obviously, something like Armor 4 means something very different if you have an average HP of 8-12, versus, if you have an average HP pool ~72.
So, when balancing combat to create the experience you want, you need to keep track of average combatant HP, average attack damage, and the mitigation options characters can use. At this point, you then need to decide how you want these to relate to one another. All of these values are relative to each other. From a gameplay perspective, there's no difference between a game where characters have 10hp, and each hit connects for 1 damage, vs a game where players have 40k HP, and each hit connects for 8k. It's the same game, the only thing that's changed is the amount of numbers you have to scribble onto the page while tracking damage. If you think your characters are too resistant to incoming damage, you can increase the amount of damage attacks do, or limit the amount of mitigation they have access to. Limiting mitigation can take the form of simply reducing how much damage resistance they can get, or it can function by adding additional considerations to their mitigation (as mentioned above.) (Granted, the Vitality system is a bit of a nuclear option, because that will change your combat to be exceedingly threatening, without becoming instantly lethal. Which, might be what you want.)
You have a lot of freedom for how you shape your players' experiences, and with a bit of creativity you can provide a unique combat experience for your players.

mod ask
what kind of person would you be in head space if you were in the game? How would you act with others? Stats maybe? What would you fight with? Design maybe? and also what are you in faraway town (optional)
I spent way too much time on these but, I think the designs came out rlly cute!! Might want to click for better quality...
So, in Headspace I imagine that I'd be an artist-themed kinda person who's really bubbly and happy! Not so sure about stats but, I was thinking my role would be more of a healer/someone who can change the enemies and teams emotions (sort of like Hero). My main weapon would be a paint brush! Also, that teddy bear is actually a teddy bear that I've had since I was little...I'd show a picture of him but I don't have one rip,,,
And for Faraway I'd just be...me LOL. Nothing too special, though hopefully it's clear that I'm older than my Headspace version, since all the characters are younger in Headspace than the real world. Also wanted to come up with a flower that represented me so, I picked Bluebell flowers! These represent kindness, humility and they used to be inspiration for artists, poets and musicians!
This was rlly fun to draw and answer, so thank you for the great question!! :3

Finding My Ideal TTRPG
Of the many things I can say of Disco Elysium, the thing that strikes my gamer brain right now is the system. At its simplest, it's 2d6 + Skill. The gear you wear gives skill bonuses. You can have "Thoughts" that also give bonuses.
In my mind, it's perfect. It's all I need. A skill list and some dice. It's how I ran 5e for so long. But a lot of the 5e skills are boring. And it's not possible to just steal the Disco Elysium skill list and use it, because a lot of it is specifically about being a cop and specifically about being the kind of cop that Harry is.
But I think a good place to start would be to ask similar questions. For instance, if I wanted to make a dungeon crawler that was "my perfect ideal of a dungeon crawler," I could ask "what skills would a dungeon crawler possibly need?"
A question like that might get you a few of the same skills in 5e. But I think the question suffers from being not only too broad, but too boring. The question is flawed because as we've seen over the last 30-40 years is that there are a lot of different ways to do a dungeon crawler.
Troika! isn't The Nightmares Underneath isn't Cyberpunk Red isn't blah blah blah.
I think about Venture from Riley Rethal a lot. One of the Paladin's "Strong Moves" is simply "Kill someone." I imagine a skill list with "murder" on it. Such a strong word to use, but it's a choice. And choices are more important to me than trying to hit a common denominator.
A skill like "Pray" would be open enough but also says something about the world. I think in a game like this, your chosen skills would be the answer to choosing a class. There wouldn't be combat rules beyond roll dice + skill to do a thing. What you do with your skills is the important choice. It's roleplaying.
I'm not sure where I'm going with this. Kinda losing my train of thought. I'm thinking about how "Thoughts" would work as ways to expand your character. Clocks from BitD would work well to emulate the progression of time, and they're a tool I've used in my dungeon crawler games for a while now.
Essentially, whenever a player wants to learn something. Anything. I have them figure out *how* they're going to learn it, and then I make a clock. And whenever they get the time to sit and work on that thing, we fill in a slice of the clock.
It's a very organic way of growing a character beyond a set level progression or needing to gain EXP at all. Clocks can be filled with time or money. "Pay the thief 50g and she'll train you for the day," or whatever.
You'd never run out of Things to make for the game, because you could just work out more Thoughts, deepening your worldbuilding with them, and giving them in-game benefits.
Gear is another thing that I think would be improved. Y'know, a sword could give you +1 Fighting or Murder, but it might also give you +1 Cool, or a bonus to your negotiating skill. What you wear is more important than Armor Class bonuses or whatever. What you wear would increase or decrease skills. It would *say* something about your character.
A few other things I think about in regards to conceptualizing my "perfect rpg":
The way Pokémon games handle a Pokémon's stats. Attack, Defense, Special Attack, and Special Defense. It's nice and simple and if they were included (reworded of course) in a bigger list of skills, it would help to put choices on an equal footing. If choosing between diplomacy and combat were as easy as putting skill points into particular skills, the choice is on you to decide how you interact with the world.
The skill list determines the various ways "Dungeon Crawler Persons" interact with the world, just as the Disco Elysium skill list shows the various ways a cop like Harry might interact with the world. The skills you choose then are you deciding how to interact with that world. They open and close different doors. Put barricades in your way. Remove others.
Anyways, these are just my rambles right now. I've been thinking about this shit for a while. I've probably tweeted about it before too. It's something I've tried to incorporate into .dungeon//remastered and it's what I plan on incorporating into whatever is next.
Thanks for reading.

Twenty Questions for Fic Writers
Thank you so much for the tag @floofanflurr <3 I am always happy to yap about my fics! I'll pop this below the cut 'cause it's kinda long.
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
Eight under the timeofjuly account, and a few others scattered around other usernames and the anonymous collection.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 124,470 words, which is kinda crazy to look back on since I only started in August of last year.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Just Undertale at the moment, but I've written for a few other fandoms in the past.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Resisting the Current
Trick or Heat
Wishbone
Parallel Circuits
And Four Papyri in a Pear Tree
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes! Always, though it sometimes takes me a little to get around to it. My favourite thing about writing fanfic is the sense of community that you build, so I love getting to chat about the fic in the comments. I always have a million and one thoughts that didn't make it to the page that I'm desperate to share. I also like to say thank you when people go out of their way to comment, because I really appreciate it. As a reader, I know I get super excited when an author replies to my comments.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I'm going to go with a few of the RtC 'verse oneshots for this. I think Resolutions from Parallel Circuits ends on a pretty angsty note, particularly compared to the seemingly upbeat start. From Silver String, there will be no answer is pretty bleak and so is on my way home. I'm quite proud of how they both end, actually - I think they're my two strongest endings in the lot.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Any of the smut, probably? They're all set in happy established relationships and end on a cutesy note.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not for a very long time, no! I remember, many many years ago, posting my very first fic on fanfic.net lol and getting a very nasty review about how the reader didn't know the main pairing in the fic was m/m (slash back then, what a blast from the past) even though it was very clearly indicated in the summary and the AN at the start. It goes to show people have been bad at curating their own reading experiences by minding the tags and summaries since forever.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yep! Mostly established relationship stuff under this username so far.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I'm not super into cross-universe crossovers, but, same as @floofanflurr, I really like playing around with cross fic crossovers. I'm (slowly) writing a crack dialogue-only oneshot where the reader inserts of Wishbone and RtC are stuck together in a broken elevator lol. It's been a fun challenge! It's very very hard to put two characters who are normally referred to in the second person in the same scene, lemme tell you, which is why I ended up choosing to go dialogue only.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I don't think so.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have not, but I'd be open to it!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Nothing that I've posted! @marty-parties and I have been messing around with an underfell papyrus/reader fic, though! I also used to rp all the time, which I'd count as cowriting. I miss it very much, even though I used to get super easily overwhelmed by it.
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
This is such a tough question. I'll pretty much read anything if I vibe with the ship dynamics (pining and unrequited love my beloved, I will read you anywhere no matter the ship or fandom), but I went through my bookmarks to actually get the stats on this. I used to be super into the mcu (I completely lost interest after endgame) so tony/steve and tony/steve/bucky were the most common ships. I have no clue what my favourite ship would be now, though.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Never say never, but I really want to write this horrortale isekai fic I've had bouncing around in my brain. I've fully plotted it out and it's set to only be five chapters, but I'm really struggling to actually write the thing. I have started it, though, so we'll see.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Characterisation, I think. And even though I mostly gravitate towards writing angsty stuff, I think humour and comedic timing is a strength of mine too.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Physical description and settings, 100%. I don't really picture anything in my head when I write, which means all that physical description doesn't make its way onto the page, and when it does, I'm just going off vibes. Particularly with setting - I have zero idea what the locations in any of my fics look like lol. Like, the house in RtC? No clue. Zero.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Really cool! I love it when people do this and I get to translate it, it's like a nice surprise.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Harry Potter, I think? It's all scrubbed from the internet now though.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Wishbone. I am so attached to the Second Mage and Sans and Rus, you have no idea. Particularly Flint, I just adore them. Don't get me wrong, I love the electrician and Quinn and all of my ocs, but I have a special place in my heart for reader inserts who are nasty and hurting and lash out and aren't always the kind, considerate, emotionally stable person in the relationship, forever supporting others. I read something years ago that said to consider how your character is inclined to react to things, both good and bad, and how for lots of people, it's not in our nature to instinctively respond to things with kindness and openness. In fiction, we often expect our POV characters to deal with situations with emotional maturity that we ourselves, along with the majority of irl people, don't have. I think this rings true even more for reader inserts. It's fun to flip this on its head in Wishbone - what if instead of acting with an uncommon kindness, you do the opposite? You get to be flawed. You get to have the murky motives. You get to hurt and in turn you hurt others, and that hurting has real consequences on you and the people around you. This is also a great way to create angst lol - in the non-fell version of Wishbone, where everyone is generally just less of an asshole and therefore makes kinder choices, a lot of the events in the fic just wouldn't happen.
No pressure tag to @covfefeships and anyone else who'd like to do this!

20 Questions for Fic Writers!
I've been tagged by @stars-of-kyber and @andthebubbles. 😁 So although I feel barely qualified, I guess I best do this...
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
7. 🤗
I started about 2 months ago, so... and yes, they're all Kanthony. Initially just started as a way of contributing to Anthony Week 2023, and I didn't even expect that I'd actually do all 7 days.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
13,370.
Currently ranging at 661 to 3,779 per fic. Rookie numbers!
3. What fandoms do you write for?
So far, just my beloved Bridgerton.
But there have been a couple other shows that have tempted me...
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Astride - 166
Nursery - 118
Hunt - 105
Yours - 94
Temptation - 88
Having published a handful with various ratings, it's quite interesting to see the kudos, bookmarks (private vs public), and subs ratios! Much to think about.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes.
Why... I sort of have a need? Idk, when I see a comment it's hard to just leave it hanging there and not to reply. Like irl if someone looked at something I made and verbally commented on it... and I just stared back blankly not saying anything. 😐 This is how it feels to me on the receiving end at least haha. And my replies saying various forms of 'Thank you!' is probably quite repetitive, but hey ho.
Plus comments give you that lil hit of dopamine; from both povs as a writer or reader. Being on the reader side for most of my Ao3 activities I tend to comment on most of fics I read, I can't help it - I must tell you what I loved about it and why, and there's a pleasure in reciprocating that back too. Look, now I've written half an essay on the subject, gaaah. (I've not been on Ao3 as much as I'd like to recently, and because I opened it to scoop out the stats for some of the questions above I can now see that I have some unreads... and the need is happening.)
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Hmmm *thinking really hard*, I don't think any of them have an ending that is all that angsty. If I had to choose, maybe Temptation?
The pattern I've shown so far in my posted works is that it's gonna be 90% fluff. Though that is liable to change. 😆
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Probably Nursery?
I'm not sure, cause they've all ended on a pretty optimistic note so far. But that one has Kate and Anthony with a few of their kids, so it's the furthest on the Kanthony HEA timeline.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not yet...
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Ummm 👀 I may have dabbled in some smut.
What kind... hm, the kind where both people are panting for each other, and end up caving because they literally can't hold their horniness in anymore (this totally explains why I went feral for Bridgerton S2, ha). Another pattern I seem to have is making Anthony a submissive man puddle.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Not yet, but I do have some crack ideas I may explore.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of, I very much doubt it.
How often does this happen to people?
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No. I'd certainly be all for it if anyone ever wanted to translate any works of mine. 😊
If I was proficient enough to write in other languages, then I would probably try publishing the different versions from the get go.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Kinda?
Nothing formal, but there was a lengthy comment thread on Reddit some months ago where myself and another user went back and forth re-writing the script for that stormy library scene 😅 (not so much re-writing what was already there, bar the last few lines, more of a continuation in a universe where Kate hadn't fled).
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
Must I even answer this? Kanthony, c'mon now.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
There's only 1 work that I have, where I've actually started a chapter 2. And I have all the faith that I will finish it. ✍️🤓
Other potential WIPs, that are currently just posted as one shots, only exist in my head... who knows if they will see the light of day.
16. What are your writing strengths?
This question feels illegal to be asked.
I have no idea, I'm very new to this whole writing thing. At least in terms of fiction, so I'm not sure what I'd consider my strengths to be. I feel like I need some more practice before I can get a real sense of this?
I would say that dialogue usually comes very quickly to me, and it's having to fill in the bits around it that takes more brain muscles. So that might indicate something.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Everything apart from the answer to the question above.
But really I think it's remembering that there is a world outside of the main couple happening, and trying to describe the details there. Also other general 'setting the scene' stuff like clothing, weather etc etc. I usually just want to jump straight in with some random dialogue.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
On writing it... no thoughts; not done it yet!
If I needed to for some unknown fic reason in the future, I'm sure I'll be apologising profusely in the author notes for trusting Google translate and probably butchering whatever language it is.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Still just the one so far, Bridgerton. 😌
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Hunt 🥺🥹 I was a lot of feels, and just very indulgent tbh.
I also really enjoyed my shortest one, Obedient, which was in 2nd person (hadn't done that before). The writing of that one was just really fun and I idky but I've reread it quite a bit!
__________________________________________________
I'm woefully looking at my Ao3 bookmarks (which has grown exponentially since joining Tumblr), full of things that I've not got round to reading yet. So I'm tagging partly based on stuff hanging out on top of that pile: @islemeadow, @ladykettlechips, @hydriotaphia, @eleanor-bradstreet, and the smut aunties @colettebronte & @fayes-fics 😋 (if y'all wanna do it, ofc. I tried to find those who hadn't been tagged/done it yet, sorry if you've actually already done this and I've just not found it).

IWTV S2: (Un)Answered Questions & Plot Holes
This is just me going thru my S2 Musings posts & collecting all my questions/concerns/complaints, which can hopefully be addressed or fixed in S3. As much as I love IWTV, I do wonder if the writer's strike effed things up, cuz some of this just don't make sense, Rolin.
WHY was Louis hallucinating Dream!Stat?
What was Lestat up to after the Trial & the Loustat breakup!?
When does Raglan James go rogue?
WTF is even happening with the Great Conversion?
WHO tried to interview vamps that the Talamasca knows about
HOW did Loumand not know their building was crawling with Talamasca spies?
Magnus
Armand's languages
Armand's religion
Papa DPDL
Claudia's diary pages
Armand's Backstory
Alice & Kate
Louis' photos
Louis' aerophobia
No Frankenstein?
The Script/Lestat's lies during the Trial
Lestat's bruises, no Tower Scene
The London Coven
Lestat's maker/fledgling telepathy in 1x2
Where were Claudia's diaries & yellow dress?
Loumand post-Paris and pre-Dubai
Daniel's Turning
When/Why did Sam go to the Talamasca?
Wtf is Dr Fareed up to in S3?
2x1:
1: WHY was Louis hallucinating Dream!Stat?
I still wanna know if this was a figment of Lou's imagination/guilt, or a symptom/manifestation of his mental illness. Is Lou REALLY schizo, or was Daniel just being an a-hole? (AND, is there a dream!Lou who visits Lestat in the dump? XD)
2x2:
2: What was Lestat up to after the Trial & the Loustat breakup!?
Ok, so we know Roget was right--Lestat was asleep after Mardi Gras, and Santiago woke him up for the Trial--WHEN though? As soon as Lou & Claudia arrived? Or when Santiago stole her diaries? (That would've just been an approx. 5yr nap; not a decades-long torpor like the ones Les had in the books.) But was Les asleep in NOLA after the Trial? Rolin said he wanted the reunion scene to be during Katrina, but the timeline didn't fit, so he used Odette instead. Was Lestat awake for Katrina? Did he sleep right through it? When did Lestat learn about Siri?
2x3:
3: When does Raglan James go rogue?
I'm very confused about this guy. We already get his threat/easter egg that he wants to Body Snatch someone and take over the Talamasca, so he's clearly already plotting. He got Armand's OG script from Sam, so I assume he still has access to the archives & agents--so they wouldn't've kicked him out yet. (Unless he hacked their database like he hacked Dan's laptop?)
Cuz he's complaining about not being well-funded, which is weird; the Talamasca THROW MONEY at their agents. And Raglan was kicked out of the Talamasca precisely cuz he was a kleptomaniac who made a fortune stealing people's money/identity--so he's got funds.
We didn't get to see the list of questions he said the Talamasca wanted Dan to ask Louis, either. What was THAT about? But Raglan did get Dan a Talamasca-approved publisher like he promised; and the Talamasca edited out...whatever it was that they didn't want mentioned--and what were THOSE edits? What does Louis know that the Talamasca says is off-limits, and what did the final cut of the book include & omit? Does this leave the door open for Lestat to come swooping in saying "Louis" lied on him, when really it was the Talamasca?
So IDFK know what's going on with Raglan (don't even get me started on Rashid), but I'm excited to find out!
4: WTF is even happening with the Great Conversion?
OK, we got confirmation that S3 WILL do Rockstar!Lestat (thank god), but y'all STILL left the Great Conversion hanging. Louis knew this was happening in like 1x2, and we haven't learned EFF ALL about it since. Why didn't we get Lou/Dan watching TV, listening to news reports about strange killings or something? Or even them talking about seeing more baby fledglings out & about?
Cuz it kinda defeats the purpose of Lou's book pissing the vamps off, if on the one hand they're gung-ho about secrecy & staying in the shadows, and on the other hand they're Turning noob vamps left & right!? So many, that the Talamasca's getting worried!? And why aren't they going after Daniel--HE'S the vampire on TV saying vamps are real!
Like, I get it--AMC's obv setting up the whole Amel plotline, where he wants/NEEDS Akasha to wake up & burn all the vamps, cuz his silver cord/neural link with all his fledglings is being stretched too thin if too many vamps are connected to him; so he wants to cull the herd. The Great Conversion's the last thing Amel would want. And it makes for easy fodder for Akasha, so we can have an epic scene of her just lighting mofos on fire. But other than that, the Great Conversion hasn't made much sense since y'all first mentioned it, sorry.
5: WHO tried to interview vamps that the Talamasca knows about?
6: HOW did Loumand not know their building was crawling with Talamasca spies?
I seriously hope AMC retcons this, and says that Raglan was shielding Daniel's thoughts from Loumand, cuz that's literally the only explanation that makes sense. We know from the books that the Talamasca could block even strong vampires like Lestat from reading their thoughts, but I'm stunned that Armand wasn't scanning Daniel's brain the whole time.
7: Magnus
I hate everything AMC did with the Magnus backstory--I hope this is just a matter of Armand (1) lying his arse off, and/or (2) not knowing wtf he's talking about. Just like Dream!Stat said: HA! 😡
8: Armand's languages
What Daniel said in 1x4 about Armand's Muslim prayers sounding Crimean/Ukranian or whatever has had everyone reeling ever since. But AMC never addressed it in S2! So wtf IS Armand? He says French is his 4th and poorest language--so I'm assuming:
he was born in Delhi, spoke Sanskrit (a la Arun in Sanskrit)
(???) this 2nd language is the one I'm confused about. Either this is the Crimean/Ukranian/Russian Armand learned when he converted(?) to Islam (WHEN??); or it's some other language. In the books, Andrei knew Greek when he was kidnapped & sold to the ship captain (which makes sense cuz of Greek Orthodox Catholicism), and that's how he initially communicated with the boys in Marius' palazzo), cus his amnesia made him forget his native Russian
Amadeo learned Venetian Italian from Marius' boys, and that's what he ended up speaking the whole time he was with the Children of Satan in Santino's coven
French, which he spoke when he was transferred to Paris to lead the Children of Darkness at Les Innocents
9: Armand's religion
10: Papa DPDL
11: Claudia's diary pages
NGL, I do wonder what all the fuss was about in 1x5 when Lou refused to show Daniel the rape pages, if he was just gonna tell us what happened in 2x3 anyways. 🙄 Is it cuz he realized Dan was right about not editorializing; wanting to be as honest as possible--getting "every detail right", like he said in 2x1? Lou told Armand he wasn't gonna share the pages with Dan, he just wanted to see them again--is it cuz he forgot what had actually happened to her? Yeah, IDK what was going on there.
2x4
12: Armand's Backstory
13: Alice & Kate
We never did find out if these chicks (and Dan's daughters) were even real.
14: Louis' photos
We never did find out wtf was going on with Louis' photos (my money's still on Rashid).
2x6:
15: Louis' aerophobia
Did Louis ever get to fly a plane, is all I wanna know, AMC. For reasons.
2x7:
16: No Frankenstein?
NGL, I'm holding out hope that Armand actually did chop Claudia's head off, and just kept HELLA QUIET about it cuz he was working so hard to come off innocent as possible. TVA spinoff tell-all WHENNN?
17: The Script/Lestat's lies during the Trial
WHERE and WHEN did Lestat sleep, before he went to America?
I think this was Lestat deliberately misdirecting the coven so they wouldn't know he found TWMBK.
1908 leaves a 2-year gap, since Lestat met Louis in NOLA in the winter of 1910. So WTF was Lestat up to? The math ain't mathin!
18: Lestat's bruises, no Tower Scene
AMC, this was quite possibly your biggest L all season. If it wasn't for the eagle-eyed fans spotting Lestat's bruises, we'd have NOTHING to even begin to hint that Lestat was being forced to participate in the Trial! Why on god's green earth did y'all not focus on that more--during the Loustat reunion would've been a great time for Lestat to let Louis know he only did it cuz he HAD to!
I wouldn't be surprised if the Trial's revisited to Gotcha! us in S3, when Lestat tells the "real" story 🙄, and we get Lestat's perspective, arriving in Paris, confronting Armand, and getting the coven's ultimatum. Cuz TBF, the Trial was being told strictly from Loumand's perspectives--what Louis remembered when he was going in & out of consciousness under the coven's Mind Gift assault; and what little Armand provided (that wasn't a lie). Louis wouldn't've been in any shape to notice light bruising on Lestat's wrists with one of his eyeballs literally hemorrhaging. And Armand CERTAINLY wasn't gonna bring up Les' bruises if he's the one that put them there--he was already shaking in his boots over "Banishment."
So I think this situation can still be salvaged--YES, it'll be a cop-out, but whatever; I just wanna see it. Rolin promised us that we';d see Lestat be "humbled," but I thought we'd get something way different. It's beyond ridiculous that y'all didn't make it clearer that Lestat had been tortured; especially cuz he seemed just fine during their rehearsal--and THAT would've been the moment to show him effed up before they dolled him up for the stage.
2x8:
19: The London Coven
20: Lestat's maker/fledgling telepathy in 1x2
21: Where were Claudia's diaries & yellow dress?
We clearly see Louis stuffing Claudia's dress & diaries in a burlap sack, and we clearly see the dress perfectly preserved in Dubai. So Daniel's question still holds: "Where were all these diaries in 1973?" There's also the question of when Louis started his "archives." I have several theories (X X), but yeah, I'm confused.
22: Loumand post-Paris and pre-Dubai
AMC, the math ain't mathin!
I need a frikkin Loumand timeline, AMC, this ish don't make no sense!
23: Daniel's Turning
Like. Wtf? I can't believe y'all offscreened Armand Turning Daniel. We'd better get a proper Devil's Minion segment in S3, istg; I NEED to see the gremlin terrorizing Daniel; it's pure comedy!
24: When/Why did Sam go to the Talamasca?
Just a spare thought--was it for asylum? Out of spite against Armand? Out of boredom? Seeking attention? What?
25: Wtf is Dr Fareed up to in S3?
I just hope we'll get the reveal that he's a vampire, and that we'll see his Maker Seth for the very first time on screen--hopefully as they side against Akasha! That would be a spiiiiiicy family reunion!

CLASSPECTING 101: INTRO TO RPG CLASSES
Back in the beginnings of the RPG genre, before game cartridges had the storage space for "dialogue" or "characters" or "personality," games were written entirely in shorthand. Characters were unnamed units whose entire identity revolved around their particular moveset.
This was referred to as their job or their class.
(Early Final Fantasy leaned into this especially hard, as playable characters had no names or unique designs. Their only differentiating factor was their Class.)
For a while, this worked.
RPGs on the (S)NES didn't have the storage space to write actual personalities for each of the party members, so when introducing a character, they simply say: "You are a hero. You must save the world from giant evil shadow skull. This is your class. Have fun!" Classes were designed to abstract/imply the illusion of character.
This is because writing characters (even when you aren't confined to a 1MB cartridge) usually comes down to what a character can/would do, and what a character can't/won't do. Characters are actions.
We call characters that fight monsters and save the day "good guys," and characters who burn down villages and slaughter innocents "bad guys." Characters are choices. Choices are actions.
A character that fights monsters using their giant sword feels different from a character that fights monsters by shooting fireballs. Characters are methods. Methods are actions.
Classes abstract all of these above character components by saying "every character of this type can do these things."
All Warriors are very buff, but lack magic. All Mages have magic, but are pretty scrawny. A White Mage uses magic to heal, whereas a Black Mage uses magic to harm!
The above list isn't what we'd currently consider "personalities," it's just a list of actions that characters can choose from, but it tricks the player into imagining personalities instead. They hand you a list of actions, and ask you to create a character that would do them.
If characters are actions, then Classes are "pre-built characters."
youtube
(The player characters never speak. They quite literally have no personality. Their only method of communication/individuality is their specific list of spells/skills.)
So, why does this matter?
Homestuck, at its core, is an RPG pastiche. A deconstruction of themes inherent to the genre. Analyzing RPGs can help us analyze Homestuck.
Classpecting is one of the more obvious examples of deconstruction, as Sburb Classes are very clearly derived from genre classics (Dungeons & Dragons, Final Fantasy, etc.), all recontextualized to ask the hard hitting questions:
"Isn't it kinda fucked up to be assigned a generic label that describes all the actions you've ever done/will ever do?"
Yeah, kinda! It speaks to a larger "dehumanizing" effect that Sburb tends to have on players, abstracting them into units with certain roles, functions, and responsibilities.
Wouldn't it suck to be a character in one of these RPGs, with a whole backstory, personality, and rich inner world, all to have a "higher power" reduce you down into what you can do (moveset), how good you are at it (stats), and what they'll use you for (player strategy)?
This is one of the main pillars of Homestuck: Being a video game character is an inherently degrading experience.
"Does 'what you're good at' decide your Class, or does your Class decide what you're good at?"
Homestuck is a mess of bootstrap paradoxes, so you can argue this either way and probably be right. The answer is probably a constantly looping "both."
But, now that I'm thinking about it, I personally lean toward "Class decides what you're good at."
If Skaia decides what your Class is at "inception," then it could be argued that you excel at certain things to help prepare you for the role you were (literally) designed for. Your hobbies and interests are off-screen coaching for your on-screen role.
To bring it back to RPGs, think of the (oftentimes generic) backstory you pick for a TTRPG character to justify them having the skills Talk To Animals and Explode Undead. You create what they did before the game as justification for actions they can do during the game.
Except Sburb does this on a cosmic scale, crafting your entire life up until the game to prepare you for playing it. Sucks! More on this in a future post.
"Are all characters of the same Class the same guy? Or at least the same type of guy?"
In early RPGs? Yes!
In a quite literal sense, all characters of the same class were essentially the same exact "person." Same design, same role, same methods. With no dialogue or personality to differentiate them, if you made a party of four White Mages, they'd essentially all be clones!
(This isn't entirely true, though. More on that at the bottom.)
In Homestuck? No!
This is partially because Classes are only half of Classpects, a more complex idea where your RPG Class is paired up with a "metaphysical element" known as an Aspect. With 12 Aspects, that means there's 12 versions of every Class.
Basically, you can have two Knights in the same party, but they can still be incredibly different (albeit similar!) units under this system.
(Dave and Karkat, on top of being a Certified Premium Yaoi Stock™, are a great case study for the similarities/differences between same Classes of differing Aspects.)
Yet, even if we ask this question again with Classpects instead of Class, the answer remains the same: you can have two characters with the same exact Classpect, and they'll still be noticeably different people.
How the hell does that work? Well, for starters, Homestuck is a story that does actually have character writing.
You can have two characters that perform similar actions (ex: Dirk and Equius are designed to have very similar traits, interests, and habits, even down to exact actions) and their Classpects will still be completely different (Prince of Heart vs. Heir of Void).
Likewise, you can have characters of the same exact Classpect (and identity!) perform incredibly different actions.
(Calliope and Alternate Calliope (CAL and AL, for short) are one of the best examples of completely different characters with the same Classpect. And they're even the same character, technically!)
This is where the crux of Classpecting as an artform is. Mechanically, if heavily differing characters can be the same "thing," and very similar characters can be different "things," then what is it that Classes and Aspects decide?
We're going way overtime, so I'll answer a question by rewording an earlier question:
"You have a Pokémon team made up of, let's say, six Dunsparce. Are all these Dunsparce the same exact thing? What could be different between them? What would always be the same?"
If you read this far: Sorry! Didn't mean to get this carried away! Thanks, though. Marrying two topics I care a lot about (game design and Homestuck) is a pretty good way to pass the time, it turns out.
If you think you know the answer to the above question, feel free to chime in. I'll give my two cents whenever I follow up on this topic.

Writing/Art Update 4.30.2024
I'm tired!!
That's not related to anything, I just wanted to get that out there: I'm do not have a lot of energy right now.
I am taking requests right now, and I thought it would be good to post an update on how that's going, because I'm worried that people will think I am not working on them, but I am very much working on them. I think that's because a lot of times in the past, when I do requests, it's been for a specific event, like Renji's birthday, where I have a deadline and a lot of pressure to get things done. In this case, it's just that I have a list of prompts in my inbox to work on, where at least someone will be happy to read it when I post (hopefully 😂) I have posted one already, and I am at work on the second. It's about 1200 words right now, and I'd say it's 1/3-1/2 done. It's going kinda slow. That's not to say it's going bad--I have good direction on it and I've been making progress on it, it's just not, like, flowing from my fingertips. It's a set of characters I don't usually work with, which is fun for a change, but also it takes me like 9 times longer to write anything that doesn't have Renji in it. The way I figure, if I can do about one of these per week, that should be reasonable.
People are still welcome to send in requests! I will say: - I have gotten lots so far, so please don't feel like you need to send me a pity request, but if there's something you'd like to see from me, hmu, who knows, worst case is I don't write it - Quite a few (like, at least 3???) are things that I already have planned as part of larger works, and I'm not quite sure what to do with that 😂 I guess I'll just say that if you feel like you sent in a really good one and I ignored it, just be patient, it may come up eventually. - Lot of funny/cute type ideas, which is fine and it's like, the main thing I do, but also please don't be afraid to send in something more serious or angsty, I do like to do that kinda stuff, I just don't always have ideas (they never seem to get as many stats, so maybe other people just don't like my serious stuff as much, but let me have fun 😂) - Maybe b/c I turned anon asks back on, I've been getting a fair number of (what seem like) regular asks, rather than fanfic requests, but tbh, sometimes I am not sure, so please try to be clear if you want a fanfic about it, or you just want me to answer your question, otherwise you get what you get.
In art news, I keep meaning to draw and then not drawing!! I need to fix this! May is tomorrow, so there is a new set of art prompts, which I am more excited about than the April art prompts. Also, we watched the Halloween episode last week and my daughter really wants us to draw Pumpkin Ghost Orihimes and I would like that too. I will try to get my shit together! We'll see!

congrats on 1K!! that’s incredible.
I cannot remember if I already asked this, because I remember typing it or thinking about typing it? So if you see this twice - I’m sorry.
🦉can you share more about that max phillips x reader fic where the reader gets pregnant?? (I’m literally already obsessed with this idea)
Ashlee, even if you submitted a dozen of these, I would answer every single one! 🤍
adding a below the cut because this has been a wip ive wanted to do for a while but i cannot do another series without finishing one first
as for the max fic, surprise, surprise it would be a multichapter fic - i was thinking one chapter per each month of the pregnancy, ending with a tenth chapter to kind of check in on how everyone is doing :)
the premise is a curse that goes wrong. A ticked off young witch curses max because he wouldn't give her the time of day (in reality he was sleeping with reader in secret and didn't want anyone else), so she curses him with responsibility. Because it's so vague, it goes a little haywire and slowly turns him human. Of course, his sperm are the first things to, shall we say, come alive, and reader ends up 100% pregnant with Max's baby. But the witch doesn't reveal herself, so you and max are left trying to solve the mystery of your miracle pregnancy (we gotta have some plot here, right?). And news of the miracle vampire pregnancy (because no one knows what's happening to him) has gotten out and now everyone from vampire hunters to vampire covens alike is now after you and the baby. So there's aaall that on top of the idea of co-parenting with Frat Le Stat . . .
i really wanted to explore more of Max in detail -> who was he before he was turned, where did he come from, what did his parents think of their son suddenly returned as a member of the undead (or did they think he just died??). i also headcannon max as having a little sister whom he thought the world of, so i'd really like to make him ask the question "would she be proud of the person I've become?"
we're adding way more depth than a silly B horror movie provided, but hey, that's kinda my whole thing...
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ASKING ABOUT THIS ONE!
Max doesn't get enough love so I'm glad someone out there is looking out for him! 🤍

So, to answer the question "who's the most useful cookie to level", i think I'm gonna separate them into categories based on what they're useful for. There's some more situational ones that are good to have but not necessary, I've compiled cookies that i use or have seen on others' teams a lot. These are generally good for any game mode.
Under cut cuz this ended up being kinda long,,
Your team has to have at least one frontliner and at least one healer, more if that's what you need, the rest is DPS (damage per second).
Currently the best frontliners are:
Financier - Epic Defense (able to heal up a little the cookie with the highest attack or your whole team if you have her magic candy)
Fettuccine - Epic Defense (literally unkillable in my experience, soaks up damage like a boss)
Burning Spice - Beast Charge (attack focused, drains the attack stat of the team to increase his own)
Stormbringer - Legendary Charge (also attack focused, give her as much crit% as you can)
Dark Cacao - Ancient Charge (balanced, his Awakened version is better, but you need to get both the original and 20 awakened soulprisms to get his buffed version)
Rebel - Epic Ambush (an exception for an ambush class to be in the front, he deals really good damage and debuffs)
Elder Faerie - Super Epic Defense (i don't use him but i hear he's pretty good)
Crimson Coral - Super Epic Defense (also don't use her, I'm not even sure which of these last two is better)
Hollyberry - Ancient Defense (she's gotten a bit outclassed, but she's still pretty good plus she's gonna be awakened next year too)
Dark Choco - Epic Charge (level his magic candy, works great paired up with Awakened Dark Cacao)
Wildberry - Epic Defense (good defense and even good attacker when using a specific build where you give him as much hp as possible)
Next up is your healer. A healer can be a Healing or a Support class. Supports typically are able to deal a little damage, while Healers typically don't.
Mystic Flour - Beast Healing (currently the best healer you can get, she gives really good buffs, heals a lot and her lantern continues healing even after she dies. Just don't pair her up with safeguarded cookies or she loses some buffs)
Cream Ferret - Special Support (you get them through the Pavilion of Promise, which is easy but takes a while (you only get 3 attempts a day). They're more about buffing your team but their healing is good too)
Pure Vanilla - Ancient Healing (he's gotten a bit outclassed, but given that there's just not a lot of healers in the game in general, he's still good, plus he's getting awakened real soon)
Icicle Yeti - Special Healing (as an exception to the healing class, they take the front position and shield your team in addition to healing it)
Snapdragon - Special Support (another really good special cookie, they will help your team stay alive)
Cream Puff - Epic Support (she's only obtainable through the guild gacha which may take a while, but with her magic candy and as much crit% you can get, she can instantly heal your team back to full)
Parfait - Epic Support (a good support healer when her magic candy is leveled, she's pretty situational but has served me well)
Rockstar - Epic Healing (probably pretty good but I'm not using him)
Lastly are your damage dealers, which include some of the attack-focused frontliners i mentioned before, plus cookies from the Ranged, Ambush, Magic and Bomber classes. These classes don't really have too many functional differences between them, they're just mainly damage dealers
Wind Archer - Legendary Ranged (deals INSANE amounts of damage, great for both bosses and regular waves)
Crème Brûlée - Epic Ranged (known as the boss slayer, pair him up with Mint Choco and/or Star Coral and he will destroy)
Frost Queen - Legendary Magic (with her crystal jam leveled, she becomes invaluable, being able to dish out great damage and freeze enemies)
Golden Cheese - Ancient Ranged (she's good while not awakened and great when awakened, plus she has a free revive)
Squid Ink - Epic Magic (even tho they're an older cookie, they still do good damage with their magic candy. My Squid Ink surprisingly enough deals more damage than a Legendary Black Pearl who is, power-wise, my strongest cookie)
Twizzly Gummy - Epic Ranged (that's a lot of Ranged cookies isn't it?? Level her magic candy, give her as much crit% as you can and pair her up with Black Lemonade to get a destruction machine. She's squishy tho.)
White Lily - Ancient Bomber (she deals great damage and debuffs, as well as healing up your team a little bit if certain conditions are met.)
Stardust - Super Epic Ambush (heard he's pretty good, especially for arena, but I'm not using him so idk)
Moonlight - Legendary Magic (i hear you either don't unlock her crystal jam or level it up, otherwise low level crystal jam only debuffs her)
Tarte Tatin - Epic Ranged (i only use her in specific cases, but she absolutely shreds in them)
Prune Juice - Epic Bomber (that's the guy on my profile image!! He's pretty situational but in those situations he excels)
Mango (Epic Magic, needs magic candy), Black Raisin (Epic Ambush, needs magic candy), Mozzarella (Epic Magic) Burnt Cheese (Epic Charge) I'm pretty sure are also good but I'm not using them so idk
That's a lot isn't it??? The ones closer to the top of my lists are ones that i use and know for sure they are the best. Other than that you can check out the CRK wiki's tier list, it's just as subjective as mine and i don't agree with some of it but it's been a great reference for me when i started out.
If you're having trouble beating specific levels or gamemodes, there's two places to look: r/CookieRunKingdoms and YouTube, just type in the name of the level and there's gonna be lots of team composition. A lot of the time you'll be stuck on a level and you'll just have to build up your cookies in the meantime, then try again after a while.
As i mentioned, other than leveling cookies directly you can level then indirectly. Buy and upgrade landmarks that give your cookies buffs. Unlock researches in the gnome laboratory once you unlock it. You gain buffs for cookie bonds and costume sets. Join a good guild.
But, at the end of the day, this is me tryharding cuz that's fun to me. I'm entirely free to play and have been playing for a little less than a year overall, and I'm gonna say that the first like a month of playing a new game is the most fun cuz you're all like, laid-back and get showered in rewards for doing absolutely anything, cuz later this sorta goes away. But it's a game and it's supposed to be fun, and the most fun in a gacha game for me personally is working with what i have. And just.. not playing if i don't feel like it :P
(maybe that's too much rambling from me, but i keep getting into games where i wish there was someone to take my hand and explain everything to me and there's never been a person like that so I'm eager to be that person to someone else lol. So like. Feel free to ask me more stuff if you wanna)

Hi there!
Did I just look up a handful of questions (while trying to sleep) re US currency to see how someone unwillingly timetravelled back to the 70s-80s would fair with modern money? Why, yes, I did! And I did it cause I'm day(night)dreaming about those darn vampire boys so what?
Am I a writer? No. Did I find my answer? Sorta, what I specifically wanted was stats about the average age of a banknote in circulation. Didn't find that but found averages about how long each kind of note usually lasts, so I used that time.
The time travelled fellow is in deep shit to say the least, already knew that but confirmation is neat! It'd be great if some immortal group of guys could exchange that money but that's the last thing the above mentioned traveller wants so tough luck 🤷🤷
(This ain't a request or anything, I just thought you might appreciate this train of thought, btw I just started reading yalls "Journal Entries" on ao3 and I'm having a great time!)
Buhbye!
...oh my god this is EXACTLY my level of pedantry in writing ajfhajfhag
Like, for some of the drabbles, do you KNOW how much research goes into it? Like, in the drabble 'Rabbit Pie', I spent forever looking up what kind of shot gun the old farmer would have most likely had, its specs, and the music that would have been available at the time, how it was played, etc. To me, details like this matter.
I can imagine that David and Dwayne have got some old coinage and even a couple bills left over from the late 1800s (about when they were turned), just as mementos or in case they need raw cash and want to pawn them. (Though I don't think they will.) Dwayne has a coin collection as well, and he's got some old stuff in there.
The boys certainly aren't thrilled when the digital age and online shopping/payments and credit/debit card companies kinda take over and cash starts to have less and less utility.
Anyway, I'm really happy you're enjoying Journal Footnotes! Hopefully, we can give you more soon :>
