PSA to fan creators who don't have a lot of regular contact with children: They are almost always bigger than you think. A 1-year-old baby may already be walking. A toddler is likely already hip-high. A 10-year-old may already be taller than at least one of their parents. A 14/15 year old may already have reached their adult height.

i feel like, actually, i know that wei wuxian is definitely the more serious parent between him and lan wangji - not as in personality, but in the way they treat their kids' needs (like studies, personal belongings, etc)
the last word deciding anything to do with their kids is wei wuxian's, he's the one everyone looks when they ask for something because as much as a fake teary eyes works wonders with lan wangji, it doesn't matter because if wei wuxian says no then it's a no

Wei Wuxian was “adopted” by the Jiang family, but he refers to Jiang Fengmian as “uncle” and Madam Yu by her title. Wei Wuxian was “adopted” by the Jiang, but he refers to neither Jiang sibling as his siblings, only going so far as to call Jiang Yanli his “shijie” and refer to Jiang Cheng only by name. Wei Wuxian was “adopted” by the Jiang, but he keeps his original surname (which had to be told to him because street-kid A-Ying only remembered his baby name prior to being found by Jiang Fengmian), is not written into the family records, and only names Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze as his parents across both lives. Wei Wuxian was “adopted” by the Jiang, but nobody treats him like an heir and Jin Zixuan directly says that he should marry Jiang Yanli (insultingly) to become the heir if he likes her so much.
Schrodinger’s adoption: where a person is totally a part of the family except absolutely no one in said family acknowledges that this “family tie” exists, not the “adopters” and certainly not the “adoptee.”
Bonus: Jiang Fengmian treated Wei Wuxian so much better than Jiang Cheng, but he only really expresses concern over his own children’s well-beings and future while allowing Wei Wuxian to mostly do whatever. Jiang Fengmian treated Wei Wuxian so much better than Jiang Cheng, but he allowed his wife to whip and punish Wei Wuxian excessively without a word otherwise, something she does not do to her own children.

Horrible thing to say but I think there's a real chance Jiang Yanli was both of her parents' least favorite child and knew it and just kinda. Had to go on with her life knowing that.

SHOW it in a very affirming way but he's clearly the one she's emotionally most invested in#jfm's favorite kid is wwx. is he even one of his kids? doesn't matter. he's the favorite#(madam yu does NOT see wwx as her child so he doesn't factor into the calculation for her.)#i think jfm's neglect of jc is talked about. mostly because the both jc and wwx are clearly aware of it and so it's mentioned in novel#but um... DO we see either of yanli's parents give much a shit about her? ever?#jfm doesn't even ask if she WANTS her engagement dissolved before doing so#also the reason stated by other characters for jfm not liking jc is that he's madam yu's child. you know who is ALSO madam yu's child?#i think jfm may find jc.. harder to get along with. but i also think whatever discomfort from his marriage he projects onto his kids#it also extends to yanli. it's just that he's not constantly REMINDED of yanli like he is jc#(because madam yu keeps yelling about it)#and so he just... doesn't think about her much at all#madam yu meanwhile treats yanli with this air of disappointment. she seems to resent that she's 'weak' and gentle and quiet#and that she cares so little about status so as to treat wwx like her little brother#i think yanli is just fundamenally so clearly... not the child either of her parents wanted. and it shows.#i'm slightly peeved fandom doesn't talk about this as much as they talk about the effects the jiang parents had on the two boys.#but to be fair to fandom the book doesn't either#which is probaly just danmei-typical misogyny. but to give a slightly more watsonian reason#i think the yunmeng bros are genuinely unaware of this. yanli is PERFECT how could her parents not love her?#(of course they notice something like zixuan's initial dislike of her but that's blatant.)#(vs the attitude of the jiang parents towards their daughter which seems to be mostly... disinterest and disappointment)

Sizhui and Jin Ling are offered separate rooms and he’s not sure exactly what Jin Ling’s face does because he’s too busy trying to keep his own perfectly neutral, but Baba cracks up laughing and leans into Uncle Wanyin’s side to say, “Just like us when we were younger, huh?”
Uncle Wanyin seems a lot less scarier than when he’d pulled his sword on them, but the scowl on his face isn’t exactly friendly. But he doesn’t push Baba away. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I was thrilled when we got our own rooms.”
“We snuck into the others room at night until Madame Yu found out,” he says to them. Uncle Wanyin elbows him, but not hard enough to cause Baba to wince.
This is a little bit more like the grumpy younger brother Mama and Baba had always talked about, although it’s not coming off as exactly natural. But it also doesn’t feel fake either. Sizhui tries to think about how he’d be feeling and acting if he thought Jin Ling was dead for thirteen years and then he popped up like nothing had happened and decides Uncle Wanyin is doing okay, actually.
Separate rooms sound nice, theoretically, but this place that their parents say is home is still new and unfamiliar and frankly he wants his annoying little brother where he can see him. Just in case.
“It’s alright if you want to share,” Mama says. Jin Zixuan’s arm is around her waist and he’s looking at her with the same faintly adoring expression he’s had since he first saw her. They’re sharing a room too, apparently.
Which is fine. That’s her husband. He’s Jin Ling’s father. It’s just a little odd to see someone putting their hands on Mama, is all.
He’d feel guiltier about this if Jin Ling didn’t keep side eyeing his father too.

You know, one thing that boggles my mind is how some in the fandom can dispute that Yu-furen "didn't whip WWX", "only whipped him that one time in the novel and once in the extras" and my absolute favourite response... "WWX said she never hit him".
All of which are the most ludicrous statements I've heard since Trump won the election...
Obviously YZY hit and abused WWX throughout his life. Not only do we see her doing so, but we are given a vivid description of his back in the extras and it's covered in old scars alongside the new ones she has just given him for no good reason. Before anyone cries "but it's propriety, he was half naked in front of a young woman!" and all the other crap I've seen people spout, he's not the only one with a bare chest... Yet she specifically blamed and targeted him. Your precious "tiger mom" YZY was being unreasonable and you god damn well known it!
Anyway, regardless of whether you believe WWXs obvious lie to save face and cope with the trauma (just like JL does when he denies JC hits him and we clearly SEE otherwise) there is an actual line in the novel, from the narrator, not WWX... that spells it out for readers in black and white!
...and Jiang Fengmian’s wife Yu Ziyuan had never spoken well of them to him— honestly, things had been pretty good if she didn’t WHIP HIM or tell him to scram, or kneel in the ancestral hall, or stay away from Jiang Cheng.
- Vol 1. 7S, which is my least favourite translation because I really do feel the translator actively tries to play the abuse down.
Jiang Fengmian’s wife, Yu Ziyuan, never had a decent conversation with him. He would be fortunate if she didn’t GIVE HIM A FEW LASHES, or banish him to kneel at the ancestral hall so that he would keep his distance from Jiang Cheng.

...Yu ZiYuan never spoke properly to Wei WuXian at all. It was lucky for him if she didn’t GIVE HIM A FEW WHIPS and send him to kneel in the ancestral hall so that he’d keep his distance from Jiang Cheng.

It's in...Every. Single. Translation. So there's no excuse if you're talking about the novel or tagging things as MDZS or Mo Dao Zu Shi. It's right there for everyone to see. WWX deemed it a good day if he wasn't whipped! Which would have been the days YZY was off night-hunting and nowhere near Lotus Pier.
Thankfully YZY being away from the clan residence seems to be the case more often than not. But those days she was there... It was a likely scenario WWX was going to be "punished" (for absolutely nothing) in some way or form and judging by the scars he had across his back, she very much liked to hit him with her spiritual weapon.

Can I just scream about these two for a minute??
Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi are so capable, so strong, so fluid and in harmony together as cultivators. Even Wei Wuxian himself is impressed by how skilled they are at such a young age.
And really, who would expect any less from Lan Clan disciples who’ve learned from the Twin Jades of Lan? But these two go so far beyond that. They are, in every sense of the phrase, core disciples. Trusted enough to handle situations like Mo Manor on their own, skilled enough to subdue something as resentful as the arm—something they’ve probably never come across in their short years of training, and determined enough to not give up even when the situation becomes dire and seems impossible.
You can give most of the credit to their seniors if you want but their level of cultivation wouldn’t be this high if they themselves didn’t put in the work, dedication and self-discipline to supersede all expectations and harness their full potential.
My boys deserve some goddamn respect on their names and that’s final. ⚔️
