Plaything - Chapter 1
Ao3
Next Chapter
He had heard Hinata had returned.
And it pained him that he couldn’t go see her.
“I swear to god, if you even fucking think of going to that girls place," his mother scolded as she pulled on her sandals, “I will personally whoop your ass.”
Kiba was feeling the effects of what was essentially being in heat for his clan. It was something he had experienced every year for the past four or so years, but it was so much worse this year with Hinata’s naked image burned into his brain. It had been a few days, and he figured he probably had a few more left, and almost hoped she wouldn’t get home until after it had passed. But his sister teased him with the information, and he could have ripped her throat out for burdening him with it.
“Your plaything is back," she sang as she passed his door, "safe and sound. Perfect timing, huh?”
Damn her.
He knew it would be a mistake to see her right now. She had no idea what he was like in this state, and it wasn’t something he was ready for her to see. He wasn’t sure he would ever be ready for her to see.
Physically, he wasn’t much different. Just his dick was always fucking hard, and he almost never had relief. Masturbation was a joke in this state. He knew the only thing that could bring him any calm, even for a moment, would be the real thing. Especially with Hinata.
But that was selfish, and even in this state, he would control himself. He just needed to stay inside.
So in a rare moment when both his mother and sister had taken off and there was a knock at the door, Kiba debated whether it was a good idea to answer it. But her scent found his nose, and he groaned. "Of course."
“Kiba?”
His mind went cloudy. The door opened and Hinata peeked inside.
“Anyone home?”
“Fuck…” He whispered, balling fistfuls of his blanket. “Fuck, fuck, fuck.” When he heard her silently activate her byakugan, he wanted to ram his head into a wall.
“Kiba, are you okay?”
“Yeah-“ he choked out, carefully opening his door to look out. She had climbed the stairs to meet him and her beautiful scent hit him. What he would give to snatch her right now and yank her into his bedroom and throw her down and- “you shouldn’t be here right now, Hinata.”
“Oh, I’m sorry.” Her eyes lowered and she poked her fingers together. He let out a frustrated sigh at her sadness, feeling like a massive piece of shit.
“It’s not your fault-I just-I need some space.” Kiba had no idea how to get her out of the house without hurting her feelings.
“Oh…” Hinata’s voice raised in pitch and his heart was in his throat. She slowly turned around and made her way back downstairs.
FUCK.
“Hinata!”
He was going to regret this.
“Yes?” She stopped and looked up, blushing at his person in front of her now, simply covered with boxers. She gulped, folding her arms behind her. He sucked in a deep breath, painfully aware of how hard his cock was and trying to shield it behind one of the railings of the stairs.
“I want to see you, I really do-“ he stuttered, clenching the railing hard enough to hear the wood crack.
“But?” She questioned, eyebrows raising in concern.
“I’m-fuck-“ Kiba slammed his fist against the railing, causing a fracture. She gasped, stepping backwards. “I’m like-I’m in our clan’s version of heat, alright? And I didn’t want you to see me this way, and it’ll be over in a few days, so you should go and I’ll come see you later. Okay?”
Hinata’s eyes were wide as she stared up at his form, him resisting looking at her. His chest tightened as her scent morphed beneath his very nose. When she first arrived, he could smell her excitement and anticipation. Those were both still present, but now he could smell her arousal.
Oh no.
“Can I….help?” She slowly stepped up the stairs, one by one, and he let out an annoyed chuckle.
“Nope. Nope, nope, nope, Hinata-“ He held out his hand in a stop motion, but she continued on. He finally looked at her and she was really testing his control. Her eyelids hooded those beautiful orbs, her lip between her teeth, she even pushed one side of her hair back to expose her neck.
Holy shit, is she trying to make me lose it?
“Hina-“ his voice was strained “-it’s kind of-it’s kind of gross, but I’m like…really fertile right now, and-and if you keep this up-“ he stepped back from her, his entire body feeling like it was on fire “-I can’t promise I won’t-I’m just gonna cum in you like ten times in a row-seriously-Hina-“
“Maybe I…I’d like that.”
Oh no, no, no.
She had essentially backed him into the wall by his door, her chest barely rubbing against his. “I told you I’d come home to you, didn’t I?” His eyes widened, eyebrows raised in confusion.
“This is not like you, Hinata.” He choked out, hands tight behind his back as he stared down at her with wonder. The attitude change was testing him-goddamnit was it testing him. Her face reddened as she averted her eyes, stepping back slightly.
“I-I missed you, Kiba…” she whispered, twisting her hands together before looking back up at him. Her confidence was slowly leaving her, but she pushed. “I just didn’t want to be away from you.”
“Damnit.” He huffed out before quickly wrapping his fingers around her hips, flipping her around so they were switched, and she was against the wall. She gasped in surprise, but a smile formed against her cheeks despite it. She wrapped her arms around his neck as he slid his hands under her thighs, pulling her legs up around him and shoving her forcefully against the wall. He held off from kissing her, scanning her face. He was dead serious, and the lack of any happiness on his expression showed it. “Do you want this?” He needed to hear it.
“I want this.” She spoke confidently and he let out a frustrated growl, screwing his eyes shut.
“Fuck, Hinata-“ She cut him off by sliding her lips over his and he groaned into them. He urgently reached down and pushed her panties aside, sliding two digits inside forcefully, causing her to gasp as she pulled away. He quieted her by covering her lips with his and forcing his tongue passed them. As he pumped his fingers in and out of her, he desperately wanted to free his cock and shove himself inside of her, but knew she wasn't ready for it yet. He needed her to be wet, and his patience was wearing thin. With a sigh of frustration, he tore his mouth from hers and dropped her legs to the ground, then fell to his knees and pulled her panties to the ground.
"Kiba!" she gasped as he settled his hands between her knees, forcefully shoving them apart and got to work on her clit with his tongue, sliding his fingers back inside of her. He groaned against her when her fingers began threading in his hair, clutching for life. He could hear her sweet moans now, and he made him ache. He needed her, now. He could feel her slick starting to run down his fingers, and decided it was enough, because if he didn't get what he needed now, he would lose whatever control he had left. In a few swift motions, he was back on his feet and had his arms under her knees, urgently pulling his boxers down to free his aching cock.
"Needed you wet and ready," he mumbled against her jawline as he positioned himself against her before forcefully thrusting himself inside, eliciting a high pitched moan from her. It took every he had not to leave a dent in the wall with her body. His fingertips pushed into her ass cheeks as he shoved in and out, sliding his mouth over the area of her neck she had exposed for him. He sunk his teeth in, her load moans against his ear like ecstasy. “You have no idea what you’ve done,” he snarled into her neck before leaving another mark. When he felt her shoulder rise as if to push him off, he grabbed the back of her hair, tangling his fingers in her long locks, and yanked, hard. Whatever control he had left was gone as he felt himself getting closer. A gasp escaped him now when he felt her fingernails dig into his shoulders, and he lost himself in her. He gave a stifled moan as he felt himself cum inside, her scratching pushing him over the edge. He burrowedhis fingers deeper into her skin, making sure he was leaving marks on her as he pumped everything he had into her. She collapsed against him, her forehead resting on his collarbone as his breathing slowed, his head clearing just a bit.
“Kiba…” she panted, her fingernails releasing from his skin.
With a shuddered breath, he asked her, “are you okay?”
“Y-yes,” she sighed distantly.
“Good,” his voice lowered against her neck, “because I’m nowhere near done with you.” He loosened his grip just a bit before kicking his door open and dropping her on his bed. He slammed his door shut and bolted back to the bed, hastily pulling her her dress off. When he had her naked in front of him, a small whine escaped him.
Wait.
He rubbed the back of his head, managing to restrain himself as she propped herself up on her elbows, her knees together. He had to do his due diligence with her. “I’m serious, Hina. That was like, less than a tenth of what I have built up.” Her breathing was still trembled, and his cock twitched when he watched her slowly open her knees up in front of him. His eyebrows cinched together as his eyes dropped to her cunt, dripping white with his cum.
Good lord, this woman.
He instinctively wrapped his hand around his cock and bit the inside of his cheek in a poor attempt to restrain himself. He nearly ripped the flesh from it with his teeth when she reached a hand down to touch herself. He shook his head, breath catching in his throat as his eyes followed her hand, her sliding a finger over her opening and rubbing the cum over it. He gulped, then looked up at her eyes, and the pure lust emanating from her drove him over the edge.
He grabbed her hips and flipped her around to her knees, positioning himself against her. He leaned down, lips against her ear, “let’s hope you aren’t assigned a mission any time soon." He rubbed the tip of his cock against her lips, reveling in the little mewl she let out in response. "You’re not going to be able to walk for a fucking week.”
He thrust himself inside of her until the stubble of his cock met her lips. He groaned as she gave him a high-pitched moan, nearly a scream. He reached around and slid two fingers over her clit, rubbing in circles as he pumped in and out of her. With his other arm, he held her up just as her arms gave out, refusing to let her lay down. He trailed his fangs from the back of her neck up to her ear as she whined, cupping one of her breasts with his hand and tweaking at her nipple. His voice was low, she almost didn’t recognize it when he spoke, “you still want this?” He pumped faster and harder into her, eliciting louder, breathier moans every time. “Tell me you want this, Hinata,” he growled, slamming into her more and more urgently.
“Y-Yes Kiba-oh-I want this-“ she choked out as his hand glided from her breast up to her mouth, rubbing his forefinger against her lips. She parted them for him and let him slide his finger between her teeth. He groaned when she gently bit down, wrapping her lips around it, muffling her panting. He continued rubbing the nub of her clit, feeling himself getting close again.
“Bite me, sweetheart,” he breathed in her ear, almost a whine, as he begged, “please-“ He buried his nose into her neck as she obeyed, sinking her teeth into the skin of his finger. “Yes-fuck Hinata-“ now his pitch was raising as he felt her cunt tighten around him, milking him as he slid out and shoved back in one more time. He nearly collapsed onto her but managed to steady himself with the hand that had been working on her clit. When she fell forward, burying her face into her arms in the sheets below, he pulled his other hand around her hip, pulling her in to bury his cock inside of her. He felt his stomach tighten when he realized he was still painfully hard inside of her despite just cumming for nearly a minute, for the second time inside of her.
“K-Kiba-“ she stuttered, panting into the blankets below. He wrapped his arm around her stomach and pressed his chest into her back, laying kisses along her shoulder blades in a small moment of pure fondness.
“You’re so good, Hinata,” he whispered against her skin, massaging the area he had been clenching on her hip, “so fucking good…”
“Y-you’re not done, are you?” She raised her head to look back at him over her shoulder, offering an exhausted smile. He lifted his head to meet her lips and roughly grabbed her chin, locking his lips with hers and darting his tongue teasingly between her lips before pulling away.
“No where near.” In another swift motion, he let go of her, this time falling onto his back and pulling her on top of him. She let out a tired giggle as she grabbed his shoulders, allowing him to move her wherever he pleased. He positioned his cock under her opening and yanked her down, pulling her chest against his as he fucked into her, little gasps and whines escaping her as he did. He grabbed the back of her hair and yanked her head back, grabbing her bottom lip with his teeth and sucking. When she let out a choked moan, he chuckled and released her lip, moving his mouth over her ear and running his tongue over her lobe, growling, “you’re gonna take every last drop.”

Chapter 1: Don't Belong
Pairing: Kiba Inuzuka/Hinata Hyūga
Summary: “Hinata…” Naruto spoke quietly, scanning her face. He hesitantly moved forward before opening his arms. Her stomach did somersaults, her heart shot into her throat. It took everything she had, every ounce of will power not to pass out. No, her second instinct was to turn on her heel and bolt. Run far, far away…
A girl in love is a fool.

It had been six years since the conclusion of the war. It had also been six years since Neji was killed. It had been two years since Naruto proposed to Sakura. It had also been two years since Hinata let her feet carry her wherever they may go. With the permission of Kakashi, she set out to forget, for as long as it would take. And now it was time to come home.
She stood in front of the gates of the Leaf, a sense of dread filling her chest. If she knew any better, she would turn on her heel and just run. Run and return to her travels. She had been to so many different lands, cities and towns, tiny villages and forests, deserts, and tundra. Looking for any sense of escape. She set out to forget, but never could. What a foolish endeavor she had set out on, thinking that worldly traveling could heal the ache in her heart.
A woman in love is a fool.
Her father told her as much. He promised her she would be happy with whoever he chose for her, and to quit dwelling on subjects beneath them. She knew if she could win over Naruto, her father would never be able to say no to being married to the Hero of the Leaf, of the entire war. Her heartbreak when she realized it would never happen was twofold. She lost her brother, then she was losing the love of her life, and finally, she was losing her freedom.
So she ran. As soon as she was granted permission, she ran as long as she could, outside the bounds of the Leaf, outside the bounds of the Land of Fire. Running, running, for hours. Until her feet were bloody when she found an inn on the outskirts of the Waterfall village, right before the official checkpoint for entering. There, she rested for a night, before going even farther. She knew she had to go far away to ensure her father wouldn’t find her. Years passed before she received a messenger hawk informing her of Hanabi’s impending wedding. Then she knew it was time to return.
Still, her feet were planted to the ground below her. Until she heard a familiar voice.
“Is that Hinata Hyūga?”
She swallowed thickly, willing her eyes to scan for the voice.
“It is! I’d recognize those eyes and that hair anywhere!”
She gasped as she felt herself become locked in the arms of another.
Whoa. It had been a long time since she had been touched by another human, beyond the simple exchange of currency and goods.
“Rock Lee,” Hinata breathed into his chest, not having the energy to pull away. He had a kind heart, so she let him embrace her. His crushing hug soon relented, and he stepped away, dipping his head to scan her face.
“You cut your hair! It looks very nice!” Lee bowed and Hinata couldn’t even muster a smile.
“Thank you.”
“Did you just get here? You must be tired! Would you like me to escort you to the Hyūga compound?” Lee’s questions and comments were lightning fast, it almost dizzied her.
“No, thank you. Would you please keep my arrival quiet, Lee?” she managed to force out, still not looking at him.
“Oh-of course! I’ll leave you be.” Lee bowed once more before tilting his head questioningly at the older Hyūga. She was…different. She was cold, her voice lower and gaze unforgiving. He frowned just a bit before leaping away.
Hinata was home. If she could call it that, anymore.
-
The moment she approached the Hyūga compound, all eyes were on her. Hushed whispers, eyes flittering back and forth over her. Her gaze was locked ahead, her destination known. She attempted to force thoughts of Neji down as she strolled through the turns of the compound until she found Hanabi’s room, a guard placed in front. She had to do this quickly, or she knew she would falter. The guard glanced at her and straightened immediately.
“L-Lady Hinata!” he gasped, clutching his hands behind his back, “what a pleasure to see you once more.”
“Is my sister in?” she questioned without looking at him, eyes locked on the door. He swallowed.
“Uhm-well-have you-have you spoken with your father, yet?” he stammered, bowing his head.
“I have not.”
“Perhaps you should.”
“Hm?” Hinata finally spared him a glance, a questioning brow.
“Lady Hanabi…is not here, right now. I cannot speak further on the matter, unfortunately.” He finally straightened his shoulders, speaking with confidence. “I am sure your father will explain. Please.”
“Very well…” Hinata let a small sigh escape as she turned.
Her father was not someone she wanted to confront at this time. He strongly opposed her retreat. He told her she would be disowned if she left. She dared him and did just that. She received no correspondence from the elder Hyūga. So, she carried on. She wondered if he would stick to that threat.
When she approached his office, the familiar ball of knots began forming in her gut. The two guards on either side of the sliding door stiffened at her approach. She raised her eyebrows at them, and they both nodded and bowed, one giving a light knock on the door. At the summons, the guard spoke shortly. “Lady Hinata is here to see you.”
Silence.
“Let her know I am busy now. She may try another time.”
“Father,” she sighed, too quiet. The guards clenched their hands behind their backs as the tension thickly rose. She cleared her throat and took one step forward. “Father.”
Silence. She hummed in annoyance, stepping once more.
“Father!” She finally found her voice, fists balling. She never had confidence like this in front of her father, but she was new and different. She heard shuffling from the other side of the door.
“Send her in.”
“Lady Hinata.” The guard opening the door bowed as she strolled past, locking milky eyes with milky eyes. The door shut quickly behind her as Hiashi glared up at her, jaw locked, fingers clasped in front of him.
“My eldest finally returns.”
“Your eldest?” she asked, frowning. “I am not your daughter, am I?”
“Hm.” Hiashi turned his head from her, unused to this level of backtalk from her.
“Where is Hanabi?”
“That is a Hyūga matter.”
“I am a Hyūga.”
Silence once more. It was now a staring competition, who would look away first. She held her ground, unmoving. Finally, she spoke once more.
“I am Hanabi’s elder sister. I demand to know where she is, and what you’ve put her up to.”
Hiashi considered her words. “She is in Kirigakure.”
“The mist? Why?”
“That is none of your business, girl,” he spoke coolly, turning his head from her.
“You’re wedding her off, aren’t you? To someone in the Mist? A diplomat, I’m sure.” Hinata felt her hands tremble as she spoke up against her father. His icy eyes shot into hers like an arrow and she felt herself recoil slightly.
“You’ve abandoned your family and you are privileged to even have this information at your disposal. You may leave.”
Hinata glared upon her father. He wed her off. He wed her off just like he wanted to wed herself off. Even if she was to be clan leader, with great power, she couldn’t even stop the clan from wedding her off. She knew Hanabi’s spirit was too fiery to let this happen. They must have done something.
“Good day, father.”
She stormed out of the office, shooting a glare at the two guards as they nervously looked on. She let out a frustrated sigh once she was out of the compound, pressing her fingers to her temples.
She needed to know more. Perhaps she knew where to start.
-
A single gasp was uttered when Hinata approached the desk of the assistant to the Hokage. No one sat behind it, but a certain pony-tailed individual sat on the windowsill with a cigarette in hand, eyeing her. She folded her arms and looked blankly at him as he dabbed it out.
“H-Hinata?” He clamored out of the sill, trying to right himself in front of her. He moved unsurely towards her. “It’s you, right?”
“It is me,” she sighed, averting her eyes. She hated the way everyone was so surprised to see her, but why shouldn’t she expect it? She had been gone for two years. If Kakashi were to be trusted, which she knew he was, no one would have known why or for what.
“Are you here to see Naruto?” He asked, tilting his head to look at her. She shot her eyes up, a visible grimace on her expression. Naruto? No… She clenched her teeth as she looked out the window he had been perched on, finding construction workers tapping away at the spot next to Kakashi’s face on the Hokage mountain. She hadn’t even noticed, really. He continued, a look of realization dawning on him, “right…you’ve been gone. You probably didn’t know…”
“Shikamaru.” She scoffed, looking him in the eye. “Please let our Hokage know I am here to speak with them.”
“Uhm-sure.” Shikamaru sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. He slipped into the office quietly. The walls were well insulated, so she did not hear what they discussed. A few beats later, and he emerged, holding the door open for her. She sucked in a sharp breath, already knowing what awaited her. She counted to three in her head, then confidently walked in, locking eyes with those big, blue orbs.
“Hinata…” Naruto spoke quietly, scanning her face. He hesitantly moved forward before opening his arms. Her stomach did somersaults, her heart shot into her throat. It took everything she had, every ounce of will power not to pass out. No, her second instinct was to turn on her heel and bolt. Run far, far away…
She took a step backwards, averting her eyes in a way that betrayed her fake confidence. “Lord Hokage. I am here to discuss my sister,” Hinata managed to force out, all her confidence in one sentence, only to slowly leave her. His arms dropped. She glanced up at him from the corner of her eye and noted his shorter hair, his white robes, his hat sitting on the desk. He was the Hokage. A few moments passed as Naruto seemed to evaluate her as well, then nodded.
“Right, of course. Whatever you wanna know, I’ll tell ya.” Naruto’s boyish attitude hadn’t left him yet as he beamed down at her despite her cool demeanor. He circled back to his desk, plopping himself down into the chair behind it. “A lot’s been going on, so let me know what you need to know.”
“All of it.” She said quickly before eyeing him and he seemed to shrink under her gaze. She softened just a bit at his worried expression, clenching her fists in an attempt at keeping her fingers from poking together. Her gaze fell to the ground, the sight of him almost too much to bear. “Please. What is happening with the Hyūga? My sister.”
“Oh.” Naruto’s lips lifted, then twisted as he contemplated his words. “She’s marrying Konohamaru!”
“What?” Hinata froze, eyes locked on the ground. He nodded enthusiastically.
“I mean, it’s technically an arranged marriage almost, but they were dating before it happened.” Naruto looked up thoughtfully. “I’m not keen on every detail, but it was something like—your father didn’t want to see her dating around, so kinda arranged for them to get married. Worked out cause, well, he is grandson of old man third, right? Seemed suitable. They seem happy, though?”
“Why do you question that last sentence, Lord Hokage?”
Naruto audibly gulped. This was not the Hinata he once knew. “I-I dunno. You know, arranged marriages are kind of…sticky, silly. Stupid even. But I can’t argue with Hyūga.”
His words rolled around in her mind. She stopped to properly analyze them. Her sister was to take over, her father seemed to deem Konohamaru a good fit, and they seem happy, according to Naruto. He also said he can’t argue with Hyūga. Too bad he didn’t have that same view when she confessed her entire soul to him.
Suddenly, she felt tired. She fell into the chair across from him and Naruto frowned, eyebrows raised in concern. “Hinata?”
“Give me a minute, please.” She whispered, hand to her forehead as she leaned forward, studying the room and Naruto.
His hair was shorter. He was a bit taller, a bit less toned. She supposed it made sense with his transition to Hokage, mostly at his desk. Bags under his eyes, calloused hand, but still those bright eyes. Those bright eyes she melted into whenever she caught his gaze. Bright eyes that encouraged her, pushed her forward. Bright eyes that let her down as gently as he possibly could. Bright eyes that darkened hers. She tore hers away, suffering that sickly feeling in her gut.
None of that mattered now. What mattered was her sister, and her well-being. There was no time to worry about her former love. Still her love—but she was trying her best not to dwell on that fact. It was time to get the information she needed and leave. Immediately. Or else she probably would pass out.
“And do you know why she might be in the Mist?” She eventually spoke, not looking at him.
“Yeah, some diplomatic thing your dad sent her to in his place.” He nodded.
Finally, she stood. Naruto followed her lead and stood as well. “Thank you, Lord Hokage.”
“Anytime, Lady Hinata.” He teased, grinning at her. She glanced up at him and frowned before turning her eyes from him. She bowed, deeply, before turning.
“One more thing, if I may.” She whispered. He hummed at her to continue. “Where is Kakashi?”
“Vacation.” She grimaced at this, but nodded, moving to leave. He cleared his throat before calling after her, “hey! You wanna catch up sometime? At Ichiraku’s? I’m pretty busy but I could make time-“
“I can’t, unfortunately,” she whispered, looking at the ground. At one point in her life, the simple gesture would send her heart into the sky and her body into the ground. Now, all she could feel was overwhelming sadness, her heart full of lead. He let out a small whine at her forwardness. “But thank you. Goodbye.”
She marched through the door, avoiding Shikamaru’s gaze. She needed time to think about this.
-
As the sun shrunk under the earth, Hinata sucked in her teeth in front of Ichiraku’s. The mention of it made Hinata’s stomach growl, and she couldn’t deny that she missed it. Teuchi had greeted her with a warm smile and offered a bowl on the house, but she still paid for a few extra bowls. Now she was faced with deciding where she would go for the night. She huffed a sigh; she had thought about this on her journey here. There was one place she always knew she could go.
She carried herself through the village, thankful that she hadn’t stumbled into anyone else that might question her, until she met the Sarutobi clan symbol upon a large door. She took a deep breath as she clapped the knocker, unknowingly holding the breath in. Then those crimson eyes met hers and she finally released the breath.
“Oh-Hinata?!” She felt herself gathered into a hug by her former sensei and let her head rest on her chest. “Come in, please!”
She nodded as she was released, following Kurenai inside. Immediately, she was forced into a seat at the dining table next to an excited young girl, and hot tea was pushed in front of her. She controlled her breathing as she reached for the handle of the cup and brought it to her lips. Konoha tea. It had been a while. Finally, she turned to meet Mirai’s eyes and her breath hitched. When she had left, she was just barely beginning to form sentences. A little girl now sat in front of her, eyeing her with enthusiasm. “Do you remember big sister Hinata, Mirai?”
“No,” Mirai said honestly, but with a wide smile. “You have pretty hair.” Hinata managed a little smile at the girl. She looked nothing like the toddler she remembered, but her cheekbones reminded her of Asuma.
“You have pretty eyes,” Hinata whispered, her heart feeling a little lighter with the normalcy of the interaction. The girl giggled and turned away, back to her food.
“It’s been so long,” Kurenai started, pulling up the chair opposite her, breaking her from her thoughts, “two years is it? You never visit, the only reason we knew you weren’t dead was Kakashi’s assurance.”
“I apologize,” Hinata replied politely. Kurenai waved her hand with a smile.
“I’m just elated to see you, dear. How have you been?”
“Well.”
“Well?” She chuckled with amusement before pulling her shoulders back. “Alright then. What brings you back?”
“Mmm.” Hinata contemplated whether she wanted to share this information with Kurenai. “Just felt like a good time to come back for a bit.”
“I’m sure your father was…pleased to see you.” Kurenai gave a tight smile and Hinata couldn’t hold back a small chuckle.
“You know my father…he’s never pleased.” Hinata cleared her throat. “I was actually wondering if I may impose on you tonight.”
“Stay here? Of course.” Kurenai responded quickly, glancing at a far door. “Your room is mostly the same, except some of Mirai’s toys are in there.”
“It is?” Hinata’s voice was a little surprised. Kurenai nodded.
“Have you seen anybody else yet? Shino’s missed you.” She moved the conversation forward. Hinata bowed her head. Shino. Hinata sighed at the thought of her team. She deeply missed them, but was unsure of how to face them having up and taken off so quickly, no warning. While she wanted to see them, she hoped she could take care of her business and leave without doing so.
“Just my father and you…and Lord Hokage.”
“Oh.” Kurenai’s smile dropped, realizing this was news to Hinata. Thick silence fell over the room, all except Mirai’s noisy slurping of her soup.
“He seems well.” Hinata managed to force out, looking back up at Kurenai. Kurenai frowned at the girl in front of her, so different from the one she used to know. She seemed so far away despite being just a few feet from her. “I am happy he achieved his dream.”
“It was all he could talk about, wasn’t it?” Kurenai smiled sadly at her, reaching across the table for a hand that was not there. “Are you alright, Hinata?”
“Tired,” she responded simply, sipping the tea. “Thank you for the tea. Would it be alright if I retire for the night?”
“Oh, of course.” Kurenai nodded, getting to her feet. “I have no idea where you came from but it must’ve been pretty far for no one to have detected you for two years.”
“Hmm,” Hinata hummed once more, also standing. She followed Kurenai to the room where she quickly grabbed a few things for Mirai out of it.
“You know where everything is. If you need a shower or any food, feel free.” Kurenai smiled sweetly down at her former student, who stared blankly at the bed. “This is still your home, too.”
“Thank you, sensei,” Hinata whispered as Kurenai quietly exited, softly shutting the door behind her.
Hinata let out a much-needed breath as she turned to sit on her old bed. She looked around the room. It really was mostly the same, just some children’s items sporadically placed. Her book of pressed flowers was open to a violet, a nightlight sat next to it. She wondered if Kurenai was showing them to Mirai. A bin of toys next to her dresser. Some children’s books were scattered across her reading area, next to her history books.
She shut her eyes and crawled into her bed, fully clothed. She would seek out Konohamaru tomorrow. Sleep took her within moments.
-
She dreamed of Hanabi. She dreamed of a faceless man she was to marry. She dreamed of Hanabi and her father walking down an aisle together, surrounded by Hyūga. Hanabi’s face was in a painful smile, her father’s face completely stoic. The faceless man took her hand, and she recoiled as he bended down to kiss her, finalizing their matrimony. She dreamt of blood trickling out of his mouth as he pulls away from Hanabi, and Hinata’s palm is against his lower back. When she peers over his shoulder, Hanabi is no longer Hanabi. She sees herself, to be wed, while Hanabi smiles from the distance, hand in Konohamaru’s.
She awakened to chatter. Groggily, she rubbed her eyes, blinking away sleep as sunlight poured over her. She strained her ear to listen, recognizing Kurenai’s voice.
Right. She’s at Kurenai’s.
After stretching, she moved to the door. Then she heard a second voice, not one of a child, but of a man. She had company. Hinata frowned as she reluctantly opened the door, stepping out to find Shikamaru at the dining table, chatting with Kurenai. The chatter ceased with her presence, and Shikamaru raised his eyebrows up at her.
“Oh-sorry.” Shikamaru moved to stand, but Kurenai waved him down.
“It’s just Hinata, Shikamaru. It’s alright, isn’t it, Hinata?” Kurenai looked to Hinata with a warm smile.
“I was just about to leave, anyway.” Hinata nodded, trying to make way for the door. Shikamaru beckoning of her name stopped her.
“Hey…I know you’re probably gonna take off again soon.” Hinata spun around at his words, squinting her eyes at him in a glare. He recoiled slightly but continued. “But I really think you should stop by Shino’s to see him. He’s been pretty lonely lately, and he misses you guys.”
“You guys?” Hinata repeated, her face relaxing into one of mild confusion.
“Oh, yeah. Kiba’s been gone a few months on a mission,” Shikamaru clarified. Hinata frowned. Shino had been alone for at least a few months. One of the things that made her question leaving was her team. They had such a tight bond, she felt guilty breaking it. But at least Kiba and Shino had each other, so she could feel secure in that. But Shino, by far the most…needy, for lack of a better term, had been left on his own. She hoped he would have found other companionship by now. Shikamaru cleared his throat. “It would be really nice of you to check on him.”
“Mmm...” Hinata hummed with a frown. She glanced at Kurenai and realized she might be the best source of information on Konohamaru. “Do either of you happen to know where Konohamaru would be?”
Both perked eyebrows at her request, and Kurenai spoke up. “He’s usually at training ground 12 if he’s not on a mission. I don’t believe he’s on one today.” She nodded before making her leave.
As the door shut behind her, Hinata shook her head. She didn’t want to stay, but couldn’t deny Shikamaru’s request. She would go see Shino. But first, Konohamaru.
She meandered through the village until she reached the training grounds. She looked ahead at training ground 8 and swallowed with a frown. Many days were spent there with Kiba, Akamaru, and Shino. It was almost painful to recall such happy moments she felt she could never get back. As she continued, observing several genin and chuunin teams sparring together, she reached 12 and found, as Kurenai said, Konohamaru training by himself.
Decidedly, she stood in the distance to observe him. He was probably about 19 now, she figured, a little older than Hanabi. He had grown an immense amount since she last saw him, and his jutsu was impressive. Her eyes widened as he effortlessly summoned a rasengan with fire style applied to it, and obliterated the training body in front of him. The impact was forceful enough to blow her hair back. She had never seen Naruto do something like that. After impact, she watched as he clapped his hands and turned to the entrance of the grounds, spotting her. She pulled her shoulders back as he tilted his head at her, mouth agape.
“Lady Hinata?” he called, cautiously approaching. As they got closer, Hinata gave a short nod. He looked tremendously uncomfortable. “Wh-what are you doing here? I mean-what brings you? I mean-well-“
“I was told my sister is being wed,” she said, plainly. Once they were a few feet away, they stopped, toe to toe, and he couldn’t have looked more awkward if he tried. “To you?”
“I really wish she was here…” He chuckled, averting his eyes. “Out of all the times for you to come back, she’s gone!” A nervous hand rubbed the back of his neck, feeling those Hyūga eye’s bore a hole into him. Hinata was patient, and she intended on letting him do the talking. “I mean, yeah. We’re engaged, I guess. We were just dating, but your dad is…persuasive.” She lowered her eyes. “I’m happy about it, of course! I really love your sister.”
“Do you?” Hinata took a step forward, tilting her head at him. “Or are you just following along with my father’s will?”
“No!” Konohamaru waved his hands, finally looking at her. “I was thinking of proposing anyway! I’m really happy with her…”
Hinata let out a relieved puff of air. She couldn’t deny that Konohamaru wasn’t on her radar for potential grooms for her sister, but he was certainly one of the best she could have hoped for. “Well, alright…” She shifted on her feet, dropping her eyes to the ground. “As long as she’s happy.”
“I’m trying.” He stepped forward, feeling a little more confident in front of the elder Hyūga now. “We mission together a lot. She’s taught me a lot of new jutsus, and I’ve taught her a lot—or, well I’ve tried, but she’s…something else…” She watched as his eyes drifted upwards, something like admiration in them that she had to admit was sweet. “We’re actually really strong together.” He chuckled, dipping his head to see if he could catch her eyes. “Are you staying, Lady Hinata? Hanabi misses you, a lot.”
She pondered his words. He seemed so sincere, she couldn’t deny him. “You may address me as Hinata.” He grinned down at her as she raised to meet him. She turned away to begin her trek to Shino’s. “I will see you around, Honorable Grandson.”
“Call me Konohamaru!” He called back playfully as she quickly walked into the distance, satisfied for now.
-
The layout of the village still memorized after it’s rebuilding, she found her way to Shino’s within minutes. With effort, she knocked on the door to the Aburame household. She was greeted by Shibi, who, if he was surprised, did not show it. He simply welcomed her in and went to fetch Shino from his study. Hinata stood awkwardly in the middle of the living quarters she once knew so well. Many days were spent here with Shino and Kiba, planning missions, or just enjoying each other’s company. She felt like a foreigner now.
Hinata raised her eyes when she heard soft footsteps, and met those of Shino’s shaded ones. He stopped in the doorway, seemingly frozen. For Shino, she would attempt to smile. She strained herself as she upturned her lips, glancing at his hands as they curled into fists.
“Hinata,” he choked out, relaxing his hands.
“Shino,” she responded, swallowing. The sight of him was actually the first welcome one so far. She loved Kurenai for everything she had done for her, but conversing with her was something she had dreaded. She knew her dear teammate wouldn’t question her, simply accept her. So she moved to him and wrapped her arms around his waist, resting her forehead on his buttoned jacket. She let a relieved sigh slip out when his arms returned the hug. They stood, embraced, for a few minutes. When she went to pull, she felt Shino resist a moment.
“It’s been two years, Hinata.” Shino’s voice sounded tense as he looked down at her, hands on her shoulders. She forced herself to look up at him, nodding.
“I…I have to go, again. I just wanted to see you before I left.” Hinata regretted the pained look on Shino’s face, eyebrows raising and drawing together, a hint of a frown underneath his collar. She pulled from his grasp, making for the exit. “I’m sorry.”
“Kiba’s due back in two days.”
Hinata sighed.
“I can’t stay, Shino.”
“Please.”
She paused, frowning.
“Whatever’s wrong, we can fix it…together. Why? Because we’re a team, Hinata…we always will be.”
Something felt tight in her chest at those words. Shino’s demeanor was always calm and collected, when he showed emotion, it touched her differently.
“You can stay here. The guest room is open.” His voice started to sound a tad frantic, uncharacteristic for Shino. “It’s just two days.” Her shoulders heaved with a large sigh.
Two more days, truly, she did not want to wait. But she couldn’t deny the sentiment. And she couldn’t deny that it actually felt good to be in Shino’s presence. And she couldn’t deny her desire to see Kiba.
Two days.

Konoha 12 with Children Going Through the Same Trauma They Did
Tags/Warnings: Body Image Issues, Grief, Mental Health Topics, Reader Insert, No Reader Pronouns, Mild Physical Abuse (Sorry Sasuke would punt you)
Tumblr media
Notes: Boruto who? BORUTO DOESN’T EXIST FOR THESE HEADCANONS.
𓆃 Choji - Body Image
Easily the best at knowing what to say. He’s been struggling with his body image his entire life and has a wonderful grasp on what health specific to his clan looks like.
Choji strives to make topics surrounding weight and body shape normal and neutral in the household, so if you're asking about weight, it’s because some other stupid kid said something.
You are always reminded of your spirit, skills, and capacity for kindness rather than your looks.
Choji ensures that your home is a positive and safe place to talk about anything.
𓆃 Hinata - Finding a Voice
Hinata has always been a very patient person and knows how hard it is to break out of one’s shell. As a parent, she provides a space for you to be heard and to feel safe.
Hinata believes that you can’t force things when it comes to your growth and tries to nurture you until you have the strength to do it on your own.
Not to say that she doesn’t give a little push now and then. Hinata herself always regretted the amount of time it took for her to take chances and be vulnerable with friends, so she gives gentle nudges and reassurance when she can.
𓆃 Ino - Normalcy and Loss
A part of Ino always wanted to be a normal girl. There was a balance between civilian life and shinobi life that she couldn’t quite strike, especially when responsibility was thrust onto her so young.
She’ll want to go out with you often, whether it’s getting sweet drinks, getting your nails painted, asking for the friend-group gossip, or other fun activities.
A part of her craves getting more of those experiences in her youth, but she very much wants you to have those experiences for yourself and to have a consistent parent who “gets you.”
She definitely tries too hard at times— it’s embarrassing sometimes— but she means well.
𓆃 Kiba - Bein’ a Guy
Kiba always had a loud bark, but when it came down to it, he didn’t meet all the goals he intended to meet.
Being the energetic guy he is, he will be rooting for you from day one. Sometimes, you feel he gets more excited about projects and accomplishments than you.
Kiba is always celebrating you and always bragging about you. He’s proud of you that you have goals— big or small— but more than anything, he wants you to live your life in a way that makes you happy.
If you’re happy, Kiba is dragging you out for celebratory ice cream.
𓆃 Lee - Bullying and Inadequacy
Ehm. I mean, he means well?
You see, Gai took a very tough love approach with Lee meaning that Lee thinks if you push hard enough, you’ll find fulfillment... and that’s not for everyone.
He’s also not great with his words. Every so often, he’ll say something encouraging, but sometimes he’s just emotionally clueless.
If anything, you’ll always be celebrated for your uniqueness and what makes you you.
Lee genuinely wants only what’s best for you; his pure intentions are always clear.
𓆃 Naruto - Isolation
Poor Naruto, seeing you isolated would probably make him so sad. And angry, for that matter! Naruto isn’t above punting some jerk kid who made you mad (which probably isn’t great for the Hokage).
He’s a little goofy in the sense that he’ll probably take an over-interest in the things you enjoy. He’ll insist that you do things that interest you together.
He’s also really into pep talks and giving unsolicited advice (that probably isn’t really that great).
Naruto would totally give you pocket money to enjoy a meal if he’s busy.
𓆃 Neji - Unfair Family Dynamic
Well, first of all, Neji isn’t letting this happen.
I’m struggling to write a headcanon because Neji wouldn’t allow this. He wouldn’t allow the secondary-branch stuff to happen.
He’d be a fierce advocate for you, even before birth. But Neji is such a grumpy dad. The affection is there; it’s just through action.
He’s also not very good with words, so the affirmation is straightforward, but he would go to war for you.
𓆃 Sakura - Inadequacy
Your two best friends are also gods, huh? Sakura knows how that is, and she’s probably picked up on it before you tell her.
She’s reticent about things and always seems to tell you exactly what you need at that moment. Sakura is very encouraging, helping you problem-solve to figure out what your strengths and passions are.
She suggests that you pursue those, admiring your accomplishments, whether big or small.
𓆃 Sasuke - Having your family murdered in front of your very own eyes Going Down a Troubled Path
Yikes. Don’t go down a Troubled Path ™ while Sasuke is around.
I’m sorry. If you tried to leave the village, Sasuke wouldn’t be above punting you. I’m just the messenger.
Sasuke would be there for you, or at least try to, but as another shinobi who’s not great with words, he’d usually end up looming.
Maybe there are times when he can see your anger, and you can achieve a nice, quiet moment with him, but Sasuke will drag you out of darkness no matter what it takes.
𓆃 Shikamaru - Losing a Sensei
Shikaku knew best, and that’s what Shikamaru does with you. He’s straight to the point, not very into hugs or anything like that, but he does have an eye on you emotionally.
Shikamaru already knows, and he drives straight to the point, unarming you so that you have a space to feel your grief.
𓆃 Shino - Losing a Sibling-like Person
Another quiet Dad. He just wants what’s best for you too.
It’s all about the memories and the momentos. Shino would encourage you to cope and heal at your own rate but not forget the person important to you.
Shino would be there with you in your grief but ensure the focus remained on you. You would have space, and Shino would show his love and support through small gestures.
𓆃 Tenten - Bein’ a Gal
Tenten stuck a nice balance in her life, and she wants to pass that on to you too! Maybe you’re not the flashiest ninja in your grade, but Tenten is already working with you on a strategy on how to improve that thing you like!
Never for a second has Tenten treated you like something to be overlooked. Anything you want to do, you do!
Zero hesitation. Mention one idea to her; she’s already helping you put it in motion. To her, there’s nothing worth overlooking in the first place.
Thank you to all who liked, reblogged, followed, and supported. Your support means so much and is greatly appreciated.

All of the Times Naruto Knew She Danced and the One Time He Didn't
Part Four
The fourth time was after the couple moved in together. While he had noticed Hinata dancing in the apartment from time to time, it was more of an unconscious movement. Hinata gliding and turning elegantly around the apartment came as simply and naturally as breathing.
No, whatever this type of dance was, was  very… consciousable.  If that was even a word. Naruto thought to himself,  as he watched Hinata push their couch up against a wall, while Kiba lifted the dining table up over his head and casually walked past Naruto. A stupid smirk on his face as he plopped the table onto the couple’s bed.
“Excuse me, Naruto, where can I put this?” Naruto jumped from the close proximity of Shino. Turning his head slightly away from the man. In order to avoid being cheek to cheek, Naruto felt a vein throbbing and his annoyance rising. Before Naruto could even figure out a nice way to tell Shino exactly where he could put his tv. Hinata’s sweet melodic voice crashed over him, calming Naruto.
“Shino-kun please bring the tv this way.”
Shino nodded as he moved around Naruto. Plopping the tv onto the coffee table that Kiba had also commandeered and moved towards the opposite wall. Naruto watched from his safe spot in the kitchen  as team eight continued to rearrange the apartment.
It was Tuesday night, and like his standing sparring session with Hinata, it seemed team eight had a routine all of their own. Hinata had asked Naruto a few nights ago  if he would mind if the boys came over.( It was her week to host the event.) Naruto was quick to remind her that this was her apartment now too, and she could do whatever she wanted. Hinata beamed and kissed him on the cheek. Promising him that they wouldn’t cause too much of a disturbance as she began to give detail of the night. Still focusing on the warmth of her lips, Naruto grabbed her. Effectively cutting her off and preventing her from moving away, as he pulled both of them onto the couch. The rest of the conversation was quickly forgotten.
But now, as he watched Kiba and Shino begin to stretch in his small apartment he thought maybe he should have listened a little more thoroughly. Surely they weren’t about to spar in here right? Looking over the small apartment he realized how cramped they all truly were. So much so that Akamaru was also banished to the kitchen as it was the only space left for the dog. Just as he was about to let his concerns be known Kiba turned the tv on and flipped to a station that played music videos.
“Guys they’re on!”   The gasp of excitement that came from Hinata, was way too adorable as she scrambled up from the floor crowding the tv with her other two members. However, once he saw what was happening in front of him Naruto almost choked on the cup of ramen he had made. As the music video was starting Kiba, Shino, and Hinata all three got into their places and as the members of the boybands began to move, so did each member of team eight.
Naruto could only think to cover his mouth as Shino started the dance by slowly walking out towards the middle of what was now apparent their makeshift “stage” and posed for just a moment before the music went into an upbeat tempo and suddenly Shino was moving. Arm for arm. Leg for leg, Shino matched the choreography perfectly. Then suddenly Shino and Kiba switched places as Kiba and his designated dancer took center stage. Both were powerhouses as they swung their bodies in all different directions and did hand movements. If he didn’t know any better he would have thought Kiba was going through hand signals for a  jutsu.
Suddenly the chorus of the song rose and with it the three team members in complete sync did the full routine together. It was quite silly to see these three moving forward towards the tv arms wiggling before all skipping backwards, arms windmilling behind them. On and on they kept going, as a new member would perform a solo so would one of team eight. It was only as the final beat of the chorus ended  and the team in front of him hit their final poses that Naruto finally couldn’t contain it anymore and let out a chuckle.
Three pairs of eyes (Four if he was counting Akamaru) turned to him. A smile on Hinata’s face, while Kiba looked unimpressed and Shino, well he really couldn’t tell what Shino was thinking.
“Got a problem, buddy?” Kiba demanded, still in his final pose. That caused Naruto to outright laugh. Clutching his stomach as he did so.
“I’m sorry-I really am not trying to be rude, I just didn’t expect that!”
“Why not? Routine dances are a good form of exercise and a valuable training tool.” Shino spoke up as the group moved out of their pose to face Naruto.
“Training tool?” Naruto’s interest peaked as the three nodded vigorously.
“Come join us, Naruto-kun!” Hinata urged, suddenly excited over the idea.
“I don’t know Hinata I-
“Please!” she begged, her eye’s big and wide with hope. Naruto couldn’t deny her. With a resigned sigh he made his way over to the three, choosing to ignore the sound Akamaru made as he passed (which sounded suspiciously like a laugh.) Once he was in front of the tv.  Hinata very seriously began to explain.
“When on the field you need to be able to assess a situation in a moment's notice. Correct?”
“Correct.”
“ So you must be able to adapt quickly and move almost without thinking in order to counter an attack.”
“Yes?”
“So here’s what you are going to do. Whatever song comes up next, you are going to pick a person to focus on. You’ll have a few seconds to figure out how they move and then you are going to copy their movements to the best of your ability. The goal is to be able to calculate your opponent or in this case your dancer’s  moves almost before they even know what they will do. Ok, Naruto-kun?”  Suddenly this didn’t seem nearly as silly as it had been a few seconds ago. It actually did sound like serious and useful training.  Excitement pumped through Naruto’s veins as he moved to the front of the tv.
“Yeah! Let’s do this!” Naruto shouted, hyper focused, and ready to take on whatever came his way.
“Wait, what?” Naruto fumbled as the very next video was a girl group.  He looked at all of the girls in the video, a very different concept from the fast paced energetic one that had previously played on the screen. Maybe he could try the next video.
“Quickly, Naruto-kun, get in position!”  Hinata exclaimed. Naruto jumped, nodding as he quickly scanned the girl group and made to move to the center spot.
“No way! That's my spot!” Kiba barked as he yanked Naruto behind him. Naruto was about to strangle the man but the music had already started. Giving Kiba one last glare he moved into the same starting pose as the girl standing behind Kiba’s. Naruto had less than a second to question what he was even doing before the girls started to move.
If anyone outside of his living room had asked him how he did, he would have said it was a piece of cake.  However, the truth of it was a very different story entirely. The poor man stumbled around for what felt like the longest four minutes of his life.  At some point he just stood rigidly still, only offering late hand gestures. It took Hinata’s encouragement for him to keep going, and so he powered through running in tempo to his positions, swaying and moving his body, most notably his hips, in ways he was not all that used to. A fact that Kiba felt the need to yell out from across the room.
“For someone who used to change into a sexy babe for fun, you sure have no feminine grace about you!” Kiba mocked as he himself shimmied slowly towards the ground before moving back up and jutting a hip out. The jab was the insult it seemed Naruto needed to up his own ante.
“Fuck off Kiba! I’ve got twice the feminine grace you do!” Naruto shouted as he aggressively snapped his fingers to the beat. Determined to prove himself, Naruto brought his arms in toward his chest before  throwing them up towards the ceiling. From there Naruto rotated his wrist as seductively as possible. Grinning to himself in victory when he caught Hinata blushing as she unabashedly watched the movement . Feeling encouraged and storing that information away for later, Naruto hit every move after it was only when the video ended that he allowed himself to drop to the floor gasping for air.
“How..huff..was..that?!” Naruto gasped out as he laid on the floor.
“Terrific Naruto-kun!” Hinata beamed at him giving him a thumbs up.
“Very promising. Why? Because even though you have no rhythm, you have the will to work hard.”  Shino murmured.
“I’ve seen better.”  Kiba huffed as he turned his head away.  Naruto ignored the other two ‘s comments and jabs as he smiled up at Hinata as she bent over him smiling radiantly as she offered her hand. Naruto took it without hesitation as he got up.
The rest of the night was spent much of the same. New groups came on and Naruto would dance. Some groups were better than others and at least three videos from that first male group played throughout the night and judging by the excitement on team eight’s face as they danced, it seemed they were a crowd favorite. Though as the videos kept playing Naruto had to admit the girl group was his favorite and when by pure luck the first song he’d danced to came back on a second time Naruto made sure he hit every move. It was one of the best workouts of his life. So much so that as the group began rearranging the apartment back into it’s usual state. Naruto confessed his enjoyment and said he’d like to mention this to all of the teams and maybe have a large group training exercise.
At that Kiba burst out laughing, clutching his stomach as he bellowed. Shino feigned a coughing fit though Naruto noted the grin he was trying to hide, while Hinata looked mortified.
“What’s wrong?”
“You-You really thought  we were training?!” Kiba gasped out in between laughs.
“Kiba!” Hinata admonished her long time friend before taking Naruto’s hand.
“Naruto-kun, I must apologize, we  might not have been entirely truthful. This isn’t a training session, this is just a… Fun session…”
“A fun session?”
“A hobby.”
“So you guys just meet up every week to dance?”
“Not every week. Why? Because some weeks we do karaoke.” Naruto whipped his head around to look at Shino who had calmed down enough to speak. Naruto gave him a hard look trying to decide if he was tricking him again. The image of Shino standing in front of a crowd singing seemed even more ridiculous than the idea of him dancing. He turned back to Hinata as she stood fidgeting, a look of shame on her face.
“We just wanted to include you, but didn’t want you to think it was silly!”  Hinata said earnestly which melted any indignation Naruto might have felt away. Coming up to her he pulled her into a big hug.
“It’s okay Hinata! I probably wouldn’t have joined in as willingly had you not spun it as training. But I really enjoyed it!” Naruto knew an innocent prank when he saw one. And while he was annoyed that he let Shino and Kiba get the best of him, he couldn’t be prouder of Hinata for keeping a straight face as long as she did.
In fact, the thought of Hinata pranking him kinda turned him on. So without hesitation he brought his head down and captured her lips using the surprised gasp from her to the fullest extent as he deepened the kiss. Ignoring the cries of disgust from their two friends Naruto pulled her closer and felt victory and satisfaction when he felt Hinata’s hands gently tugging at his hair and the telltale sound of his door slamming shut as the rest of team eight fled.
The door alerted Hinata  to pull away just enough so that she could look him in the eyes as a giggle of their own erupted out of the two of them. Pulling her towards their bedroom. A mischievous grin spread across his face.
“Come on Hinata, it's time for us to have a fun session of our own!”
“N-Naruto!” Hinata gasped but quickly followed the man into their bedroom. Clothes being chucked as they go. It was much closer towards morning when Hinata and Naruto had finally settled down into bed intending to get at least a few hours of sleep. As they cuddled into each other Naruto thought back on Hinata’s dancing that night. Every time he thought he had Hinata figured out. Every time he thought he had her every step, every pattern, every movement memorized deep in his soul, she would surprise him. Naruto squeezed her tightly, daring to break the silence one final time.
“You know, I still think we should make it a big group training session. Maybe not on a Tuesday night though, maybe on a weekend.” Naruto pondered out loud.
“Sure, Naruto-Kun. I think that would be fun.” Hinata murmured groggily as she nestled even further into his warmth.
“Yeah definitely not Tuesday nights, keep those for team eight.”
“That would be nice.” Hinata replied with a yawn.
“I would still be allowed to come though-right?” Naruto asked thoughtfully.
“Of course, love” Hinata gave him the most earnest bleary eyed smile as she pulled the covers up tighter around them, her eyes drifting shut.
“Awesome! Because if you're so sexy when you dance I can only imagine how sexy it will be to hear you sing!” Naruto quipped as he kissed her cheek goodnight and quickly fell asleep.
“Thank you, Naru- Wait what?!” Hinata’s eyes shot open as she bolted up, leaning on her elbow to look at her boyfriend who was snoring rather loudly, a suspicious grin twitching at the corners of his mouth.
“Naruto-kun!” Hinata tried  again, as she shook the “slumbering blonde”  but all she was meet with was another playful snore.

Figured out why I hit a wall on one of my more ambitious fanfic ideas: while I knew what's going on now I forgot to account that the characters have 10+ years of knowing each other in this AU before the plot begins.
So I'm now poking at my AU to explore some background ideas and details. If you guys wanna ask me anything about it (couple details, funny incident you think any of these characters may've had, what the rules of the parties are, etc), my ask box is open.
Harbor Having Fun:
The annual Christmas Party is a tradition. Everyone is invited, but since college it's been harder to get everyone together and this year is no different. Secrets can't stay hidden forever and sometimes you have to face your fears. But the holidays are also a great time to connect with old friends, meet new people, and hide from your overbearing parents and other extended family. Also known as: People give Gaara and Ino way less credit for maturity than they deserve. They also give Shikamaru and Temari way more credit than deserved. The following individuals are hiding secrets: Neji, Shino, Karin, Hana, and Tenten. Fake dating isn't that fake when everyone but you insists that you're dating a friend. But it is when you bribe another friend. And remember, friends don't let friends host single.
The couples in chapter one are: NaruHina, ChoKarui, ShikaTema, ShinoKarin, KankTen, SaiSamui, NejiHana, and (allegedly) KibaShiho.
I'm also working on working on the rules, and backstory for the rules, of the Christmas party. Along with determining which rules will be added from this year's chaos.
POV Characters: Konoha 12, Karin, Suigetsu, Samui, Matsuri, Sand Siblings, Hanabi, Itachi, and Shisui
There also a bunch of non-pov characters, rule of thumb is that if a pov knows them in canon they know them in this modern-au.

What I Ship Because I’ve Been Semi-Vague
I talk about shipping a lot, but since I talk about whatever’s popular over what I actually like (this may or may not change), you might not know what I actually ship. Or you do because you stalked me or read the few fanfictions that I posted here and will probably move because it’s weird to have fanfics on a mostly commentary focused blog.
Regardless, for anyone who’s interested, here’s what I actually do like. Also, just to make sure that all of my credibility goes down the toilet, all accept one (maybe two) of these is a crackship.
The Ships I Sold My Soul To
These are the ships I like the most. Yes, I’ve already imagined AUs with them and I’ve given them all children. I promise I have a thought process that makes sense (to me) behind them all. However, I don’t want to turn this into a 100,000 word essay, so I’ll try to summarize what I like about them in 1-2 (potentially run-on) sentences. Just know, there’s more to all of these.
NejiNaru (Neji Hyuga x Naruto Uzumaki) - Both characters had their lives decided/changed at birth against their will, but walked out of it with vastly different perspectives. This combined with them having complimentary personalities makes me think that they could have very positive impacts on each other’s lives if they were given just a bit more time to get invested in each other.
GaaSaku (Gaara x Sakura Haruno) - Both characters would greatly benefit from having (emotional) support in a relationship and both characters are deathly loyal to a fault. They also both need and have different perspectives that they wouldn’t hesitate in sharing with each other.
SasuIno (Sasuke Uchiha x Ino Yamanaka) - Both are highly confident, independent people who wouldn’t take shit from each other (which is important when both absolutely pull some shit). They’re also loyal to anyone who earns it, are very driven, don’t stand for people getting hurt unjustly, care deeply for their clans and clan traditions, and roll their eyes at their friends’ shenanigans despite everyone knowing that they’d both kill and die for them.
ChouTen (Chouji Akimichi x TenTen) - They are similar in the best ways and different where it counts. TenTen would motivate Chouji to work harder then complain with him about how hard it is to work hard and Chouji would absolutely help her have more faith in ninjas being able to become great with hard work alone.
ShikaKiba (Shikamaru Nara x Kiba Inuzuka) - Like Sasuke and Ino, they come across as very different on the outside but have a lot of similarities when you dig a little deeper. Along with them being good to have in each other’s lives, each other’s families would also be good influences on them (Shikamaru would benefit from being around very expressive and strong female role models, and Kiba would benefit from being around patient people with higher IQs).
TemaHina (Temari x Hinata Hyuga) - They could relate with each other when it comes to growing up as the older sisters trained to be weapons since birth overlooked in favor of their very talented younger siblings with physically absent moms and emotionally absent, abusive fathers that are not only skilled ninja but also hold great social-political power, but they could still offer each other different perspectives. Temari could help Hinata gain more confidence and stand up for herself while Hinata can help Temari learn how to approach situations with kindness rather than the anger/violence that’s been taught to her.
ShinoLee (Shino Aburame x Rock Lee) - These two are so fucking different and they cover each other’s blind spots so fucking well. Rock Lee is very passionate and memorable, but he doesn’t realize he can rely on others (seriously, he does everything alone) while Shino doesn’t have direction and is insecure about not sticking out, but he’s characterized as being very aware of the importance of teamwork, even when it’s with people outside of team 8.
KakuDei (Kakuzu x Deidara) - Both characters value respect and strength, are able to keep a clear mind even when their short tempers get the better of them, and are deceptively intelligent. Kakuzu could also benefit from taking more risks and Deidara could benefit from keeping his head on the ground, both of which the other could force help them to do.
ItaHida (Itachi Uchiha x Hidan) - Both of them are so devoted to their beliefs that it’s actually a problem (they both only think inside the box and are the opposite of self aware) and both of them would jump at the opportunity to call the other out on it. In the cases where they wouldn’t be able to influence (Itachi making Hidan a bit more patient, Hidan making Itachi more willing to call out bullshit, etc) or call out each other enough to change, they’d be able to easily cover for the other’s weaknesses (like, so easily that they’d be a horrific combat pair).
KisaSaso (Kisame Hoshigaki x Sasori) - These two know what it’s like to believe one thing for years and years then have your worldview shattered in an instant, making them potentially very affirming for each other. They both also value honesty and commit when they decide to trust someone or do something because of their past experiences.
Comfort Ships
These are the ships that I don’t have too much reason behind (even if there is some), I’m not super committed to finding or making content for, and I don’t really think of them in any deep or sophisticated or analytic way. They’re comfy, they’re chill, and that’s all I want them to be.
SasuKarin (Sasuke Uchiha x Karin Uzumaki) - I’ve read so many think pieces about these two and their relationship that this was inevitable. I did this to myself.
ChouSaku (Chouji Akimichi x Sakura Haruno) - They both have body image issues and a deep love for their friends. They are so fluffy, I want them to cook together, and their child would be nicknamed Cherry.
LeeSaku (Rock Lee x Sakura Haruno) - Their development during the Chunin Exams still lives rent free in my brain and they’re both such romantics. This one I switch in and out of shipping.
LeeHina (Rock Lee x Hinata Hyuga) - They have a weird amount of similarities and they’d be cute. That’s it.
SasuHina (Sasuke Uchiha x Hinata Hyuga) - They look nice together and have a bit of a night sky aesthetic. This one is the one that I think about the least, like, I’m not entirely sure if I actually ship them or I just like looking at fanart of them.

10 First Lines Tag Game! ✨
Thank you for the tag @kiljoius! I love a good tag game!
Rules: Share the first lines of ten of your most recent fanfics and tag ten people. If you have written less than ten, don’t be shy and share anyway.
1) Buzz Buzz - [Shino x Tenten] [Smut]
Tenten loved the BBQ dinner meetups her friends had often, they were such an easy way to get everyone she cared about in the same room to eat and talk the afternoon away.
2) The Bittersweet Apple - [Obito x Mei]
Obito’s usual light-hearted persona had left him entirely, and all he could do was slump further in his seat.
3) After The Sunset - [Shikaku x Mabui] [Smut]
“What a drag, Kakashi. I beg you to get someone else.”
4) The Real Treasure - [Shino x Tenten]
The Captain of the LOFS Tobirama III, one of the finest ships in the Land of Fire navy, let his eyes close, hands held behind his back in a proper attention stance flexed in unrest.
5) Welcomed Titles - [Gaara x Lee]
To Gaara, being called by his title, on occasion, felt like a door slammed in his face.
6) Time To Heal
Ino used to think working in the flower shop was the best thing in the world.
7) The Important Mission! Get Auntie Tenten and Shino Sensei Together! - [Shino x Tenten]
The classroom was dull and stuffy. Sensei’s words were stiff and unfeeling, and by the book made Boruto huff.
8) Duty Above Everything - [Shino x Tenten] [Kakashi x Gai]
“I will not sugarcoat this. Unfortunately, we have a situation.”
9) Mirai’s First Birthday
Hinata threw open her curtains with gusto sticking her head out the already open window and taking a deep breath in through her nose as a contented smile found its way onto her face.
& 10) Smile For The Camera - [Kiba x Ino] [Smut]
Kiba flopped ungracefully back onto his bed, making his girlfriend scoff and tell him off about wrinkling his dress shirt, which only earned her a dismissive wave of his hand before rolling onto his back, putting more creases in the maroon fabric.
Tagging (only if you want to! ❤️): @clumsydragon28 @shinobimagpie @valkyriav @lotusfartstwice @thespookymoth @unioncolours

In Memory, Katarinahime. Part 11.
I couldn't remember if I had ever spoken with her.
For nhmonth2022, Day 18, Prompt: My Name On Your Lips
"My Name On Your Lips" by katarinahime - Rated E, Canon-Compliant, Series of one-shots. Hinata calls Naruto a plethora of different names, some he enjoys more than others.
After 10 Reflections, I remember everything now.
Messages. Conversations. And fanfiction. We had spoken to each other in writing.
I had her name stamped across everything.
“Naruto-kun,” Naruto smiled, turning to see his girlfriend. Yes, Hinata was his girlfriend. His own, personal girlfriend. And he was her boyfriend. That word seemed weird to him. He, Naruto Uzumaki, was somebody’s boyfriend. Not just somebody, though. “Hinata!” - From Chapter 1: Naruto-kun
Sometimes you read a small headcanon, and it sticks. It sticks so hard, you write an entire chapter that elaborates on that idea. (Nightdreams - Chapter 11 "Daydreams").
Suddenly, without thinking it through too much, as he did with most decisions, he unzipped his jacket, wrenching it off. Leaving him in his white under shirt, which Sakura was always telling him to tuck in, was untucked. Wrapping the black jacket around his petite girlfriend, and then in one motion, picking her up, cradling her against his chest. “Naruto-kun!” She gasped, nervously. “Don’t worry,” He nuzzled her cheek. “I got you.” A single bend of his knees and he jumped, landing on the closet roof top. “Naruto! You idiot!” “Hey, what gives you ass?!” Kiba and Sakura screamed after him. He didn’t give them much thought. - From Chapter 1: Naruto-kun
I said once in reply to someone, that fanfic writers on the same platform tend to feed off of each other sometimes. You'll end up reading the same treatment of characters, the same headcanons, similar scenarios... from different writers.
Maybe I was just speaking for myself.
I echoed her so many times.
I agree with you! (Nightdreams - Chapter 12 "Dreaming of Tomorrow" & Chapter 13 "Night Daze")
Hinata already reminded him of a mother. Naruto wasn’t anything close to a father. So as the time drew nearer, Naruto was practically shitting his pants. In the middle of the night, at the end of March, when Hinata gasped, pressing her hands into her massively protruding stomach, Naruto’s heart dropped. - From Chapter 3: Awful, Terrible Man
Katarinahime, among a few others, have tackled the subject of how Naruto would face new fatherhood. She detailed his feelings of inadequacy and joy.
Due to reading hers and others' incredible work, I counted this trope as worth chronicling.
Fanlore, a wiki to document fandom activity, the work and actions of fans. I wrote the first draft of the Naruto x Hinata page, and referenced tropes from Katarina's work throughout.
"You are the Hokage." She pressed, her voice still hard as stone with an expression to match. "You are a great Hokage. You have done some much for the village. For the world. You kept every single promise that you've made. I knew what it would be like when you became Hokage. The children are children, but one day they will understand too." - From Chapter 8: Hokage
From (what I consider) the most difficult NaruHina scenario to write - arguments - to Hinata's forgiveness, Katarina wrote it all!
And so I tried, too. (Nightdreams - Chapter 9 "Nightingale")
"Understand I need these fragments. To tell it once is not enough." - Emily Skaja, from Brute: Poems; "Dear Katie"
I repeat. Repeat. Return to the lines I've read before. Write it again.
Retell.
How many times did I tell her that I care? How many times did I say my appreciation for her?
I said it more than I remembered! In posts and notes and conversation, in stories, in recommendations, in reblogs. I had her name beneath and in my text, and it was enough.
It was enough for others to know. Not enough to save her, but no one can bear that guilt.
It was enough to save myself from regret, but not enough for me to stop.
Thank you, Katarina. I wish I had said it to you more. It's okay for me to feel this way, there's nothing more to it.

Trapped In My Mind
Ao3 | FFN
Previous Chapter
First Chapter
Chapter 7 (Final): The Way You Handle My Name
Hanabi looked beautiful as Natsu, as well as a few other Hyūga, surrounded her.
Hinata stood to the side, nervously fidgeting with her own dress robes.
Today was the ultimate test of her progress. A wedding to a Hyūga heir was always a large, formal event that many in the village were invited to attend.
Which meant she’d have to confront many faces she had been avoiding for so long now.
Naruto, Hero of the War. Sakura, his wife. Tenten, teammate, and friend to Neji.
Her father.
She looked towards the large room where the reception would take place. Where she knew those people would be.
But she also knew the people that she could count on would be there, too.
Kurenai. Shino. Kiba.
So as she watched her sister become her most beautiful self, ready to become betrothed to the Third’s Grandson, she hung onto that. Deep, controlled breaths. Funny enough, it was Kiba who had prepared her best for this.
“I think we’re ready to let guests in.”
Hinata looked up as one of the Hyūga gestured to the door, and she nodded, pulling it shut. On the other side, she could hear the chatter of guests flowing in. She clasped both hands over her heart, inhaling deeply through her mouth, and out through her nose. She did her best to keep her thoughts on the right track, thoughts of her beautiful sister, thoughts of her dear team, thoughts of her Kiba.
Her Kiba.
She wasn’t quite sure when she had decided she was laying claim to him but decided she didn’t much care.
Because if she was going to have someone as hers, she was happy it was Kiba.
Tumblr media
An incredibly traditional ceremony proceeded without a hitch. Hinata hadn’t felt that urge to run the entire time, which was a relief. She managed to stay composed, eyes fixed on her sister as she downed a shot of sake with Konohamaru. As the small glass left her lips, she gasped and lifted it into the air, a loud “WHOO!” leaving her as she did. Hinata giggled softly as the other Hyūga around her remained in their stoic states, contrasting Konohamaru who was swiftly picking her up to take her in for their first kiss as a wedded couple.
Hinata’s heart felt lighter and lighter as the ceremony came to an end.
Now the hard part. The reception.
Kiba found her almost instantly, and she was relieved for it.
“How’d it go?” Kiba asked, instantly hooking his arm through hers, and she gladly let him.
“Wonderfully,” she responded, looking up at him warmly. He grinned and pressed a kiss to her forehead, and she almost felt silly at how it was still making her blush.
Within moments, he had her in the middle of the dancefloor, and she was being whisked around. It was the happiest she had felt in…a long time.
“Hello, Hinata!” She whipped her head around to meet the eyes (sunglasses) of Kuri, who was approaching with Shino by her side. Hinata offered a smile, a sincere one, and nodded her head to the two.
“Hello Kuri, Shino.”
“Care to dance, Kiba?” Kuri offered her hands towards Kiba who glanced down at Hinata with a smirk, nudging her towards Shino. She reluctantly let go of Kiba to join Shino.
“May I?” she asked Shino with a little giggle and he nodded.
As Shino took her in dance, she found him to be tense—or at least, a little tenser than usual.
Then, he spoke. “Are you staying, Hinata?”
Unintentionally, she squeezed his hand. She stared at their feet for a moment before looking up. “I am.” As usual, his expression remained emotionless, but he did nod in return. A few more beats of silence before she spoke up, “when will…your wedding be, Shino?”
“Spring,” he responded instantly, and she saw his head tilt upwards, so she looked over her shoulder to see Kuri and Kiba dancing as well, now, engaging in happy chatter. “I prefer March…but Kuri seems to think April would be better.”
Hinata tipped her head as she looked back at him. “Is there a difference?”
“April is warmer.” She nodded. “March is sooner.”
“Oh.” She smiled at that.
“Hinata…treat Kiba with care.”
She nearly stumbled as her feet froze at his words, but his grip tightened to keep her afoot. Quickly, she regained her balance and cleared her throat. “What…what do you mean?”
He returned his head to face hers, and tilted it, slightly. “As Kiba said, we were both worried…and I am not sure if he will admit it, but he was by far more worried than I. Why? Because he’s in love with you.”
Hinata’s jaw flexed at the words. This was nowhere near in character for Shino to…be so open.
“I just request you do not let him down, again.”
She felt him squeeze her hand a little tighter.
“I am happy you have decided to stay, Hinata.”
Having Shino speak to this like her was both unsettling and reassuring at the same time, strangely enough.
Treat Kiba with care.
Well, if she had to keep a promise to anyone, she supposed it should be to Shino.
“I will, Shino.” She nodded, looking up at him with a little smile.
His grip relaxed, finally.
“I know you will.”
Tumblr media
Kiba ran a hand through his hair as he mentally prepared himself for the encounter he was about to force.
An encounter he desperately wanted to avoid, but really had no choice but to face. And it had to be now. Here, at Hinata’s little sister’s wedding.
At the very least, the Hyūga elder couldn’t try to start anything in the middle of it, even if he wanted to.
No, unfortunately, this was the perfect opportunity.
“Gotta talk to you.”
Hiashi Hyūga’s eyes looked behind his shoulder in surprise at the disturbance in his conversation, finding Kiba standing behind him with his arms folded.
“I am busy,” he spoke coolly, attempting to turn back around.
Kiba wasn’t having it. “Sorry, but it’s gotta be now. It’s about your daughter.”
He heard Hiashi click his tongue, then saw him gesture dismissal with his head tilted to the Hyūga he had been talking to. Slowly, he turned, hands clasped in front of him. Though stoic as ever, the man’s words hinted at sarcasm. “I do hope you’re enjoying her wedding.”
“Yeah, not about that one.” Kiba rolled his eyes, resting his weight on one foot. “But you knew that, didn’t you?”
“Speak what you must say, Inuzuka.” Kiba’s jaw flexed at the belittling tone.
“You don’t concern yourself with her anymore.” He got straight to the point, spotting the tiniest look of surprise flash over Hiashi’s face. Kiba cleared his throat. “She’s mine to worry about, now.”
Hiashi blinked up at him, letting silence sit between them. Kiba leaned his head forward to portray an air of confidence. He caught the little breath the old man exhaled before looking away. “She is no longer my daughter. I do not concern myself with her, regardless.”
Before the man could walk away, Kiba recalled him. “And the seal is coming nowhere near her.”
Hiashi stopped, head turning slightly, but not looking fully back.
“But you probably already knew that.” Kiba let out a mocking chuckle at the way the man’s eyes squinted. “Your other daughter would probably kill you before you tried it, and I’m pretty sure you’re well aware of that.”
With that, Hiashi was taking long strides away, and Kiba was satisfied with that conclusion.
Tumblr media
When Kuri beckoned Shino to join her at the buffet, Hinata found herself alone. She wasn’t quite sure where Kiba was, but she decided that was okay, for now. She could handle herself at her own sister’s wedding for a little while. That’s why, when she spotted a pink head of hair in the midst of a sea of people, she decided it was her turn to do right by herself.
She felt she had come so far, now. With the help of everyone around her, it was only right she take this last challenge upon herself. No more holding her hand through it.
So she forced her feet forward, politely excusing herself between bodies, until she came upon Sakura. And Naruto.
“Hey!” Naruto greeted enthusiastically; his arm slung around Sakura’s shoulders with a glass of sake in the other. “Sake?”
“I’m all right, thank you.” Hinata held up a hand, willing her beating heart to slow, just a bit. “I was actually hoping you’d dance with me, Sakura.”
“Me?” Sakura asked in surprise, eyebrows raised and a smile on her lips. “Yeah! Of course. Hold this.”
Hinata watched as Sakura shoved her purse into Naruto’s chest, who grunted with the force but ultimately chuckled, winking at Hinata. She forced a little smile as Sakura’s hand found hers and pulled her towards the dancefloor.
It was a little awkward, with the size of Sakura’s belly, but they managed to find a comfortable position to sway together in.
“Hinata—”
“Sakura,” Hinata interrupted, uncharacteristically. She had to do this now, or she wasn’t sure she ever would. “I’m very happy for you, and Naruto.”
“Oh.” Sakura looked like she was constricted of breath now as she looked down at Hinata, tilting her head. “Thank you, Hinata…”
“And just…just know that, whatever it was in the past…it remains there.” Hinata felt the urge to look away but forced herself to keep eye contact. Sakura’s eyes went wider with the words. “All I’ve ever wanted was for him to be happy…for all of us to be happy. And I am so…incredibly grateful to see you two find happiness with one another.”
A pause sat between them as their swaying slowed to simple standing. Hinata parted her lips for air, practicing that breathing as she awaited Sakura’s response. Then, Sakura’s smile split into a grin, and it reminded her of Naruto’s. “You’re so wonderful, Hinata.”
Hinata swallowed, unsure of how to respond. Kiba’s loud voice was heard across the hall, and they both looked up to see him and Naruto having some sort of squabble over the last piece of something at the buffet. She looked back at Sakura, whose gaze remained lingered on the two.
“And Kiba’s wonderful, too.” Sakura returned to Hinata, still beaming. “I’m glad you’re back.”
Hinata nodded, letting Sakura pull her into a forceful hug, trying to keep back a cough that threatened to escape as her breathing became restricted.
“Shoot, sorry!” Sakura laughed, arms relaxing around Hinata who shook her head, pulling her hair behind her ears. Just as they parted, both Kiba and Naruto approached them. Seemed Naruto had won the fight over who would take whatever remained of the karaage.
“Fighting, again?” Sakura tutted.
“I won!” Naruto beamed, thrusting the plate into Sakura’s hands.
“Cause you pulled the pregnant card,” Kiba pointed out, irritably folding his arms.
“Gotta keep a woman with child fed, Kiba.” Naruto tapped the side of his head.
Hinata smiled. The simplicity of this normal interaction felt so very good at this moment, after sweeping that weight from her heart. She closed the distance between her and Kiba, initiating public affection for the first time, and wrapped an arm around his waist. He looked down at her in surprise, eyebrows furrowing as he set a hesitant arm around her shoulders.
She tipped her head to him and rested her other hand on his chest. “He’s right, Kiba. Babies first.”
Naruto bellowed out laughter and it felt good to hear.
Tumblr media
A week after the wedding, Hinata was finally here, the one place she hadn’t been able to go to the entire time she had been back.
Before her sat a gravestone, engraved with his name.
Neji Hyūga.
Gently, she reached out to brush a small build-up of dirt from the name. It wasn’t much, which she was surprised about. She wondered who had been coming to keep it clear. But her answer was just behind her.
“Your sister’s wedding was beautiful.”
Hinata looked up in surprise at a familiar voice—one she hadn’t heard in what felt like…or what had certainly been years.
Tenten came to rest on her knees next to her, looking towards her with a sad little smile on her lips, and finally, she was seeing her eyes again.
With effort, Hinata nodded in agreement, her voice paralyzed in her throat.
“I’m sorry, Hinata.”
“Wh—what?” Hinata gasped out, clutching the fabric of her pants.
“I’m sorry for avoiding you for so long.”
Hinata quickly shook her head. “No, no, you shouldn’t be apologizing to me! You shouldn’t be apologizing to me at all—”
“Well, I am.” Tenten’s smile turned slightly crooked as she looked back toward the headstone. Hinata felt herself begin to shake, slightly as she joined her eyes on it.
“But it’s…it’s me who’s sorry, Tenten.” Hinata slumped forward defeatedly. “He…he died for me…I should have…”
“Should have nothing,” Tenten interjected, other hand raised to silence her. “Neji did what he did because that’s the kind of man he was. I never blamed you.”
Hinata sucked in a shuddered breath, forcing herself to look up to find Tenten looking back at her again. “O…oh…”
“Your eyes…” Tenten dipped her head slightly, maintaining eye contact as she did. “They’re just…they’re the same. It hurt to look at you because…I could only think of him.”
Hinata’s chest felt like it was expanding, uncomfortably.
“But that was my problem, not yours. We’re all healing…you should, too.”
Hinata’s hand tingled as Tenten’s found it and squeezed.
Healing seemed so far and away just a little while ago. Fear gripped her for so long, it was hard accepting she didn’t have to be afraid anymore. It was a state of herself she’d become so comfortable being. A comfortable state of discomfort.
“Even though he didn’t talk about his personal life a whole lot…” Tenten cast her eyes towards the stone, still holding Hinata’s hand. “One of the few things he talked about was you.”
Hinata tilted her head, her heart beating a little faster.
“You know Neji…he’s never one to talk openly about his emotions.” Tenten let a light chuckle go. “But you could tell he was proud of how far you’d come…together.”
Hinata looked from Tenten back to Neji’s headstone. She breathed a sigh through her nose, trying to cling to those words. “I wish he was here…”
“I do, too.”
Silence passed over them for a moment and Hinata was surprised to find her tight muscles finally relaxing with the acceptance.
Then, she felt the tickle of cloth against her hand and she glanced down to find a rag dangling above it. Tenten’s eyes were high with a smile, a genuine one. Hinata gently grasped it from hers and held it. “I’ve been taking care of him. But maybe now that you’re back…we could do it together?”
Hinata set her eyes on the stone. Polishing Neji’s headstone had been a task she’d taken upon herself after she’d recovered from the initial impact of his death. It wasn’t something she’d done in so long…
She scooted closer to it and carefully set her hand with the rag in it on the top. Slowly, she pulled it across to reveal the marble underneath and she actually felt a smile come on. Then, she dragged it down the right and made concurrent squares until she reached his name.
With one last swipe, she pulled the rag across.
Neji Hyuga.
Is this my destiny, brother?
Tumblr media
“Look at this one.”
Kiba looked up from the firepit he was trying to start to find Hinata crouched in front of a patch of flowers. He stood to his full height and threw himself into a stretch before coming up next to her. “Ah, what’re those? Irises, right?”
He caught her eyes flashing over him, a surprised look coming over her face. “Oh—that’s…impressive, Kiba. You’re correct.” She smiled warmly up at him and he chuckled.
“Spent over a decade with you, Hinata. I’d be pretty dumb if I couldn’t pick ‘em out.” He waved a hand.
She bit her lip. “I didn’t think you much cared, honestly…”
He huffed at that. “Figures.”
“I’m sorry,” she offered in earnest, and he shrugged. She gestured towards the flower. “I was actually talking about the insect.”
“Insect?” He involuntarily shuddered. He’d gotten used to bugs just fine after so many years as Shino’s teammate but couldn’t control a little shiver whenever an unfamiliar one was near. When he caught a glimpse of what looked like a yellow jacket, he immediately started backing away. “Hey—c’mon, get away from that thing!”
“It’s just a hoverfly,” she clarified, waving her hand towards herself to beckon him. He relaxed, slightly. “They’re pollinators. Perfectly friendly.”
“Oh…” He sighed, reluctantly coming next to her to sit on his haunches. He tilted his head at the little fly that looked far too much like something venomous, though it did lack a stinger. He felt her eyes on him and glanced over to see her smiling face observing him. Relaxing, he gave her a lopsided smile. “Look at you. Shino would be proud.”
He reached out a hand to pat her head and was surprised to find her lean into it. A little chuckle and he slid the hand into her hair to pull her a little closer to drop a kiss on her forehead. Her little giggle was sweeter than music, he thought. “It’s so peaceful here,” she commented quietly, looking out towards the forestry they had made a little camp in.
“It is, huh?” he agreed, dropping his hand. Her soft hand slid into his and he wasn’t ashamed to admit it made his heart flutter, a little bit. He fell back on his bottom and pulled her into his lap, eliciting another one of those melodic giggles. He placed his arms around her as she laid her back up against his chest. His chin found a home in the crook of her neck and he let his body rest against hers, eyes fluttering shut. For the first time in a while, he was finally starting to feel at peace.
“Thank you, Kiba…” she whispered. He smiled. She’d been saying thank you to him over and over again for the past few weeks now. Seemed she never missed a chance to do so. He squeezed his arms around her a little tighter.
“Quit thankin’ me,” he responded, softly. “Staying with me is thanks enough.”
She hummed, quietly, leaning her head against his.
Tumblr media
The next morning, Hinata roused to the smell of food that Kiba was undoubtedly cooking over the campfire outside. She lifted her arms in a stretch and inhaled deeply, letting the earthy smell of morning dew fill her lungs. In her travels, she’d become accustomed to it as a normal, everyday smell. She barely noticed it in those days. But now, having someone outside waiting for her, Kiba waiting for her, she could smell the pine, and it smelled fresh and crisp. It beckoned her out, along with her rumbling stomach.
So, when she saw Kiba sitting in front of the fire, working a pan of whatever he’d gathered, she smiled. And when he looked up to find her emerging, he smiled back, and it was comforting to think she could see that smile every day if she wanted. She just had to stay, and she was finding it easier and easier to accept.
“Mornin’.” His voice was bright and clear. He’d always been an early riser, compared to her. She was actually surprised on their first overnight mission together so many years ago that he and Akamaru had been up at first light, and were having to shake her and Shino awake. Whenever they were able to stop at inns and had time in the morning, it was always Hinata who slept in. It was a luxury not often afforded at home.
“Good—” She coughed into her elbow, blushing as her voice came out gravelly. He chuckled, reaching over for a bottle of water to toss to her. She instinctively caught it and twisted off the cap. She walked towards him as she took a drink, then settled next to him on the log he was perched on. She sighed as she recapped it, setting it on the ground. “Good morning.”
“You know you snore?”
She gasped, flashing her eyes over him. He was smirking down at her. “I—I do?”
“Must be a new thing, you never did before.” He shrugged, scraping against the pan. She frowned, looking down at the flames. “Not a big deal. It’s quiet. Kinda cute.”
She felt her cheeks heat up slightly, but she smiled regardless. “Sorry if it bothers you.”
“Not at all.” He shook his head. “Hungry?”
She nodded.
As she ate, she wondered how his cooking could still be so delightful out in the wilderness without all of his usual tools and ingredients. She decided not to question it, just simply be thankful for it. Once they were finished, she watched him deconstruct their little tent and begin packing away their things, and felt a little disappointment in her chest. Being out here with Kiba reminded her of their days as a team, but better because they weren’t worried about a mission. And of course because Kiba’s way with affection was something she hadn’t realized she’d been craving.
He was just so at ease out here in the wild, like it was in his nature. Probably because it was. It almost felt wrong going back to the village like this. Something in her wished they could keep going, at least for a little while longer.
The flames of the fire were put out by several handfuls of dirt as they both helped smother it. Something tugged at her heart.
A little sigh escaped her as Kiba threw his pack over his shoulder. He looked down at her with a head tilt. “S’wrong?”
“Oh, nothing…”
“Enough of that.” He chuckled as he set his large hand on her head. She tipped her head up at him, looking through her lashes. “Tell me.”
“I’m just…it was nice, to be out here…” She twisted her lips, eyes shifting to the side. “T…together.”
“Yeah?” Her eyes returned and he was giving her that same lop-sided smile he’d been giving her since they were just kids. It made her heart warm. “It was nice…could keep bein’ nice, if you want.”
“Huh?” she asked, blinking up at him. His hand slipped from the top of her head to the back of it, cupping it. She leaned into the hold, waiting for his clarification.
“Let’s keep going.” He gestured his head out towards the forest. She leaned away from him, a little grimace coming over her features. “Not for two years or anything like that.” He chuckled softly, thumb rubbing into her scalp. “But for a few weeks…me and you.”
“But…” She stopped, tucking her bottom lip between her teeth. As she contemplated, she released it. “Everyone back home…”
“Home?” He smiled at that. “We’ll go home. Let’s just call it a vacation from home.”
“And…Naruto?”
“Already cleared it.”
It almost felt like her heart had skipped a beat. She wondered when he had become so thoughtful, but knew deep down, he always had been. This was nothing new from Kiba.
“Show me some of those grand places you’ve been.” She let a smile tug at her lips. “You’re more experienced than I am, now, Miss Worldwide.” A soft giggle escaped. “You can guide me in your ways. That’d be somethin’, huh? Little Hinata showing me around.”
He pulled her head towards him, gently, and pressed his lips to hers. Despite it having been several weeks since they’d shared that first kiss, it still sent electricity through her every time. She reached out to tug at the collar of his jacket to keep him there because it really was just too good to let him go too soon. She shivered when she felt his chuckle tickle against her lips, that fang poking into her bottom lip slightly. He was the one that pulled away this time, and his eyes were warm on hers.
“Come with me.” His hand fell from her head to his side, fingers splayed in offering. She dropped her eyes to it and couldn’t think of any reason at all not to take it and just go.

And it’s then that she realizes this is what she’s been looking for.
Someone who will pull her twisting hands from each other. Someone who will breathe with her to calm her down. Someone who will pull her back from the edge, relentlessly, every time. Someone who will pry her from her own mind and force her eyes open to what’s right in front of her. To pull her back to what’s real, to see what matters most.
Happiness is what she’s been looking for.
And happiness comes in the convenient package of one Kiba Inuzuka.
So she takes his hand, and it’s warm around hers.
This time, she takes the lead. She carries his hand in her own. She tugs him behind her.
When she looks back to find that boyish grin beaming back at her, her eyes land on that scar on his eyebrow. She thinks she’ll never let another mark mar his face again. She thinks she’ll never leave him alone and wanting again. She thinks she’ll never break his heart again. Because he’s her Kiba. Now, she realizes, she’s his, too. She thinks that perhaps she had been all along.
And she can’t believe it’s taken her this long to realize it.

Chapter 2: Did Your Ego Slow?
Two days passed in relative silence and peace. Shino was a quiet companion every day. The Aburame provided her meals and showers, and were respectful of her privacy, as they always had been. Shino never pressed her for information, simply greeted her every day and engaged in idle chatter about bugs and flowers, nothing about the village and her excursions. She didn’t realize how much she missed these normal interactions. It was nice. She was even beginning to miss Kiba’s brass nature interrupting their peace with his loud voice, large movements, boyish laughter. When the day came for him to return, Shino and Hinata patiently waited at the front gates, sitting together in the grass.
“How have you two been?” Hinata finally asked, the first personal conversation she had initiated her entire time there. Shino perked an eyebrow at her, then looked away, clearly conflicted on how to answer, but not to just anyone. Shino was a master at indifference, but the way he looked away to her was so obvious.
“Well. Busy,” he answered simply. She nodded, deciding it was better to leave it at that.. Then they heard a bark, and Hinata found herself shooting to her feet. If she had more time to think on it, she'd even say she was...excited. Her heart lifted a bit at the thought of seeing Kiba. She hadn’t felt excited about anything in a very long time. Being back with Shino was making her nostalgic. She was trying to fight that feeling. She controlled her breathing as she activated her byakugan, scanning for him. His familiar chakra caught her eye, and she breathed a sigh of relief. “It’s him?”
“Yes, yes it's him,"  she whispered as Shino also got to his feet. Their voices carried through the forest to their ears for a few moments until they were within eyesight. She tilted her head when both Kiba and Akamaru froze in their tracks. They were still too far away for her to make them out very well, but she saw the glint of red from Kiba’s cheeks and certainly saw the large white mass next to him. Then, suddenly, the boy and dog pair bolted forward. Within seconds, she had them completely in view, a blur, and not a second later, she was being picked up and swung around.
“I knew I could smell you!”
The boy…?
His voice was different. Deep.
She let herself be carried, and couldn’t help but notice how much bigger his arms felt. And how high up she was. He grew while she was gone. She felt the softness of Akamaru’s fur against her leg as well, and she let a smile slip. When he finally put her down, she looked up at him properly. That trademark toothy grin, fangs and all. But everything else about him was different. His hair was longer, almost brushing his shoulders and a little tamer than it used to be. Shadow on his jaw. Her eyes trailed, his chest was bigger, arms bigger, everything was…bigger. It threw her for a loop, and she didn’t realize until then she was gaping at him.
“Oi, Hinata!” She shook her head as he snapped his fingers in her face, unaware that he had been talking. She returned her eyes to his face, which was now frowning and leaning very close to hers. “Where the hell have you been?!”
“Oh…” Hinata sighed, looking away. While Shino wouldn’t question her, of course Kiba would, relentlessly. She tried to let her hair curtain her face, suddenly missing her longer hair.
“Shino and I have been worried out of our minds that you were dead. You never responded to our messages!” Kiba grabbed her shoulders, forcing her to look at him. “I’ve been looking for you, you know that? We both have. When we have free time, we’re out there.”
“You have?” Hinata grimaced, looking from Kiba to Shino, who was looking away. They had wasted their time looking for her, she had done everything possible to ensure no one would find her, especially Hyūga. She felt guilty. She should have known, and maybe she did, and that was why she didn’t tell them. They would look for her, and persuade her to come back, and that was the last thing she wanted when she left. She returned her eyes to Kiba’s, and he looked increasingly frustrated.
“You took off without a word.” Kiba’s voice went lower, and she suddenly felt heat in her cheeks, a habit she thought she had kicked. “It’s fucked up, Hinata.”
“I-I’m sorry,” she choked out, her voice slightly wet. Kiba scrunched his nose up, sniffing out the tears emerging. He softened as they began to well at the bottoms of her eyes. She hadn’t cried in a while.
“Come here.” He didn’t ask, he demanded as he pulled her into a hug. She sighed against his jacket as he reached out his other arm for Shino, and they huddled as a trio. Both men enveloped her, and she hadn’t felt this sense of security in a very, very long time.
-
Shino and Hinata returned silently to the Aburame compound, Kiba having taken off momentarily to drop Akamaru off at his home and get changed. It gave Hinata time to think passed Kiba’s rowdy gestures. She knew he was going to pry it out of her, so she had to prepare herself.
She left to find her place in life. She left to find something more. She returned because her sister was getting married. Kakashi was the only one who had contact with her for the past two years. Nothing to get riled up over.
She sat at the dining table as Shino quietly prepared tea for Kiba’s arrival. Within moments, Kiba was bursting into the house, looking cleaner. He darted his eyes until they found his team, and he smiled, lazily kicking off his sandals before taking a seat next to Hinata. She forced a return smile. She would take it over being berated.
“You know you can’t keep secrets from me, right?” Kiba immediately launched in as he draped a long arm over the back of the sofa. She sighed, shaking her head. She couldn’t. “Out with it. Naruto proposed to Sakura, and you left.”
“Wh-no! That’s not the reason I left!” She immediately raised her hands in defense as Shino laid out cups of tea. Shino raised his eyebrows at the interaction, knowing full well this was Kiba’s time to shine.
“Bullshit,” he seethed, turning in his seat to face her directly. His glare made her shrink. “You can’t lie to me. You ran. And that was fine, you had to go through your process. But then you didn’t come back.”
“I…” She paused, staring down at their feet. She couldn’t respond. He was right, but she couldn’t stand to admit it out loud. It would make it too real.
“Why didn’t you come back? Why now?” Kiba pressed, leaning closer to her. Heat creeped over her cheeks once more as his strong features bore into her, and she suddenly felt exhausted. He placed his index finger and thumb on her chin and forced her to look at him. “We love you. You left us.”
Suddenly, everything went back.
With a blink, she found herself staring up at Kiba and Shino’s faces. She furrowed her eyebrows, pursed her lips. Kiba shook his head at her.
“Alright, I get it. Too forward.”
“Did I pass out?” Hinata whispered, slowly sitting up. Shino nodded.
“Same ol’ Hinata. But it was for me this time.” He chuckled, folding his arms as he turned away from her. She swallowed, willing herself to take deep breaths as she looked on him. She couldn’t help but notice how broad his shoulders were from the back. “Guess she likes what she sees, huh Shino?”
“Stop it!” Hinata breathed, shaking her head. Another chuckle as he fell back on the couch next to her, and Shino took the other side. She sucked in a deep breath as they leaned in to look at her. They always had a way of prying things out of her, especially when they tag teamed.
“You’re not leaving again.” Kiba finally broke the silence, his features dead serious. She looked up at him with wide eyes.
“That’s not-that’s not your decision to make, Kiba!” She spoke indignantly, turning her nose at him. His expression didn’t budge. She leaned in, eyebrows furrowing, trying to give off the air that he didn’t intimidate her. She had become so skilled at not letting others intimidate her over the years, she wasn’t going to let Kiba of all people break her. “No! I’m not staying! I-I can’t-“
“Why?” Shino pulled her attention to himself, and her eyes went wide, darting them his way.
“Shino-“
“I’ve been quiet the last two days, Hinata…” Shino sighed. “But Kiba’s right. You caused panic. Why? Because you left in the dead of night. All we had was Kakashi reassuring us you were out there, alive.” Hinata’s heart began thumping against her chest as they both questioned her.
“We can’t let you go, again, Hinata.” Kiba pulled her attention now. “It’s not healthy, what you’re doing.”
“You do not look well.” Shino added, causing her to look back.
“You’re thin.” Kiba dipped his eyes at her figure briefly. “Sickly. Whatever you’re up to, it’s not good for you, or the people who love you.”
She felt her hands begin to shake as she dropped her eyes into her lap, neck tired from whipping her gaze back and forth between her teammates. “You don’t know-“
“I do know,” Kiba retorted, closing the distance between them. His serious expression remained. “Stay and make things right, Hinata.”
“I can’t-I can’t do this.”
She leapt from the couch before they had a chance to realize what was happening. She bolted from the house, not bothering to grab her sandals or shut the door behind her, simply snatching her pack and running as hard as her heels could handle.
They would come after her, this she knew. So, she had to be quicker, and unpredictable. She made a sharp left into the old Uchiha district and hopped as high as she could, until she made it over the fencing around it. Then she made for the East. Maybe she could make it to the Mist and speak with her sister before they could catch her. She just knew she couldn’t stay.
-
Almost 50 kilometers out, she finally stopped running.
“Byakugan.”
She let out a sigh of relief at the lack of chakra signatures around her. Kiba and Shino had trailed her for almost 20 kilometers before their signatures began disappearing. So, she went 30 more. She could finally relax. She had been running and leaping, leaping and running for nearly three hours, and desperately needed a break. She fell to her knees on top of a thick tree branch and fumbled with her pack. Hands shaky, breathing unsteady, she managed to construct her sloppy tent.
She should have known. She should have known.
“There was no way he was going to let you leave like that…” Hinata whispered to the wind as she crawled into the mangled tent, sighing as she rested her head. She squeezed her eyes shut.
Waiting for Kiba was foolish. Going to see Shino was foolish. She had gotten the answers she sought; she should have left straight after her conversation with Konohamaru. Her pattern of weakness caught up with her, Shikamaru’s innocent request for her to go to see Shino breaking the walls she had built for the last two years. Her teammates meant the world to her, but she couldn’t stay in the Leaf. Kiba would never let her leave without a fight, she should have waited until night and snuck out. But she panicked and took off in the most dramatic way possible.
While Shino could be convinced to leave her and attempt to forget about her, Kiba could not. He made that much clear on many occasions. He was possessive of his friends, much like a pack leader. It was in his nature to be loyal, loyal to a fault. She loved him dearly, but he couldn’t begin to understand what she was going through. The constant ache in her heart, the dark thoughts. Milky eyes looking sadly on her as the life extinguishes behind them. Big blue orbs, scrunched into a smile at her. Pink hair falling over those blue orbs as he spins her around, laying kisses over her as she says “yes.”
Her nightmares, every night. She hadn’t had a restful night sleep in so long, she couldn’t even remember. It was certainly before the war. Sometimes she dreamt of Naruto and Sakura. Sometimes she dreamt of Hanabi. Sometimes she dreamt of an ugly old man her father would surely marry her off to. Sometimes she dreamt of Neji. Neji…another reason it was so painful to remain in the Leaf. Everything about the Hyūga compound brought memories of Neji. Everything outside of the Hyūga compound brought thoughts of Naruto. She felt trapped. When Naruto and Sakura began seeing each other, she gave a brave face and acted unaffected. It was okay, he deserved to be happy. Maybe it wouldn’t turn into anything serious. She still had a chance.
Then, while attending the after party to Ino and Sai’s wedding, while everyone was dancing and happy, she was dancing and happy, it happened. Naruto got down on one knee and the room fell silent as they watched him propose to Sakura.
“Sakura Haruno, I’ve loved you since I set eyes on you.” Sakura had rolled her eyes, an uncharacteristic blush on her cheeks as she looked down at her teammate. “I want to spend every moment together, forever. Marry me.”
As her mouth opened and the beginning of “yes” escaped her, Naruto already had her in his arms, spinning her and assaulting her with kisses. To anyone else, it was a beautiful moment. The Hero of the Leaf, finally winning his sweetheart over, displaying his love in a grand gesture. Everyone clapped, everyone hooted, everyone converged on them to congratulate them.
Except Hinata. And Kiba. Before Hinata could hit the floor, Kiba was already quietly whisking her away, and within seconds, they were in the forest, and Hinata was a mess of tears and sobs on the ground in front of him. She couldn’t remember how he looked, she just remembered him giving an exasperated sigh before getting to his knees to envelope her in his embrace. She barely remembered the rest of the night, she didn’t remember what he said to her, or what she said. She just remembered pain. Then meeting with Kakashi. Then placing a flower on Neji’s grave. Then gathering her things from her room and leaving the Hyūga compound, her father stopping her before she could reach the gates to threaten her. Then running, then numbness.
The smell of smoke woke her up.
No.
She ripped her blanket off her and tore open the flap of the tent to find Kiba casually roasting something over a flame. She darted her eyes around in a panic as he looked up at her, that charismatic smirk on his lips. “Morning, princess.” She pursed her lips at the nickname, planning her best method of escape. Before she could get too far in planning, he interrupted her. “I wouldn’t run if I was you. Anbu are all over this place. Naruto agreed it wasn’t the best idea to let you get too far again. You no longer have the Hokage’s permission.”
“What?!” She gasped, eyebrow cinching together. “I-I have explicit permission from Kakashi!”
“Kakashi isn’t Hokage anymore.” He spoke flatly, looking away from her. “And he’s on vacation. You’re not getting out of this. I convinced Naruto to let me bring you home.”
“Kiba, please.” Suddenly she felt weak. She crawled out of the tent towards him, eyes wide towards him as he looked down at her, a cool expression on his face. “Please don’t do this. Please let me go. I can’t go back.”
“Hinata…” He sighed, pressing his thumb and index finger to the bridge of his nose. She grabbed his forearm, tightening her grip around it.
“Please! I’m begging you! I can’t go back, it’s too painful.” Her voice was pleading. “I can’t be there. I don’t want to go back!”
“You’ve had two years, Hinata,” he snapped, eyebrows lowering angrily, causing her to recoil. “Don’t you think that’s enough to get over a stupid crush?”
The smack against his cheek rang through the forest, the position of his freshly hit cheek frozen. Suddenly, she gasped and threw her hands over her mouth, shocked by herself. She watched as his jaw flexed. She had never hit him in anger before. Suddenly, he snatched one of her wrists, pulling it from her mouth and clenched it to the point of pain, forcing her eyes up at his.
“That’s all you’re getting.” Kiba growled, eyes boring into her. She tugged at her wrist, her other hand attempting to pry it from him with a frightened look on her face.
“I-I’m sorry, Kiba-“
“Don’t,” he whispered, suddenly releasing her as his eyes refocused on the fire. “Just be quiet.”
Hinata fell on her bottom, staring at the red handprint on his marked cheek. She pulled her knees to her chest and rested her forehead against them, and proceeded to sob. She couldn’t escape this. She felt like she was losing her mind. And she probably was.
-
She was being a brat. Kiba was becoming increasingly frustrated with her slow pace, knowing full well she could go faster. She outran him by a long shot yesterday, and here she was, dragging her feet like a child being forced to go to school.
“Pick up the pace, Hina,” he grumbled, nudging at her elbow. She recoiled and refused to meet his eyes. “Hey!” He stopped, grabbing her shoulders. He shook her lightly until she finally looked up, anger in her eyes. “You can be pissy if you want, but I’m not making a day’s trip into three days because you’re pouting!”
“I’m not pouting...” she murmured, looking away from him. He shook her once more, but she refused to meet his gaze. Then he let go of her, glaring down at her.
Fine. If she was going to act like a child, he would treat her like one.
In one swift motion, he had her slung over his shoulder. Her gasp and yelp did not deter him as he began running forward.
“Put me down, Kiba! Now!” she protested, banging her fists on his back. He ignored her. “Kiba!”
“No use fighting,” he finally responded. “I’m not letting you go.”
“Put me down!” she repeated, still wailing on him. “This is completely uncalled for!”
When he felt her hands begin to move with intention, he scoffed once more. “I wouldn’t try any ninjutsu.”
“You’re horrible!” she continued, her hands falling. “Horrible. You hate me. That’s the only way I can explain it, you must despise me.” He ignored her once more, and after a few minutes of wasting her voice and energy, she finally quieted and slumped over. He frowned at the familiar feeling of her shaking against him began. She was crying again. He let out a frustrated sigh but continued on.
After a few hours, the gates of the Leaf glimmered in the distance. He stopped suddenly, and gently set her down on her feet. “I’ll let you walk in with dignity if you quit being a brat.”
“When did you become so cruel?” Hinata whispered, eyes on the ground. He rolled his eyes.
“Enough drama, Hina. I’m not being cruel, I’m being your friend, and doing what a best friend should do.” He bent downward to force her to look at him. She violently turned her head so he couldn’t catch her. He frowned, another frustrated sigh, and snatched her wrist, practically dragging her. “It’s no skin off my ass if you look like a fool being dragged in by me by the whole village.”
“FINE!” He skidded on his feet at her thundering, shooting her a look over his shoulder. She ripped her wrist away from him and began stomping towards the gate. He’d take it. He jogged after her, keeping pace next to her, looking down at her anxiously. She was so, so different.
No longer the lovely, quiet, kindhearted girl that used to be his teammate. She was cold, sullen, and aggressive. Like some sort of wounded animal. He was concerned of what the future held for her; he knew he had to keep her home.
Over the past two years, Kiba felt like he was slowly losing his mind looking for her and saw the same in Shino. They would spend countless nights together after a day of splitting up to cover ground. She was sneaky, they always knew that. But they didn’t know she would be able to cover her tracks that well. He supposed it made sense. As the tracking team, it would be logical that she would know how to hide herself from sensory types, especially her own team. Frankly, he was proud. But he cursed her for it.
After that night when Naruto had proposed to Sakura in front of everyone, he knew she would need some space. That’s why he didn’t try to find her right away. He figured she would need some time to clear her head, then come back, fresh and new, or at least ready to deal with it. But weeks turned into months, and he and Shino began to panic. They sought permission from Kakashi to go over the borders to try to find her, only to be told that she was granted explicit permission by him to travel. He warned it would not be easy to find her, and that he was in communication with her to ensure her safety.
Then he did the unthinkable. He went to Hiashi.
He pleaded the clan leader to put more effort into finding his daughter. But months had passed, and Hiashi appeared indifferent to her fleeing, if not a bit spiteful. He had told Kiba that he cared not for her return, and when she did return, she would not be welcomed back to the Hyūga. He almost launched at the elder at those words, but Shino was there to reign him in. He left feeling angrier than he had since the conclusion of the war.
The night Naruto proposed to Sakura, he immediately covered her ears and took her to the forest. As soon as Naruto got down on one knee, he planned their escape. He already knew how Hinata would react. He held her, for hours as she sobbed. He whispered comfort to her, as much as it pained him to see her in such a state of disarray. He stroked her hair, locked her in his arms, kissed the top of her head, and let her soak his robes in tears until she finally passed out from exhaustion.
It was a terrible night. He remembered carrying her to the spare bedroom in his house. He tucked her into bed, gave her a goodnight kiss on the forehead, and told her he loved her, even though she was asleep. The next morning, he got up bright and early to visit the bakery to pick up fresh cinnamon rolls to bring back to her, but she was already gone. He didn’t know that the night before would be the last time he would see her for two entire years.
Every day, he woke up thinking of her. He had begun to lose hope, and hesitantly accepted a mission that would take him from the village for three months. Of course, she would return while he was gone, he was just thankful it was towards the end and Shino managed to convince her to stick around for his sake. But now, he felt further from her than ever before.
They walked quietly next to each other until they reached the Hokage’s tower. They stood in silence in front of the doors to the advisor’s office. Finally, she looked up at Kiba one last time as a final plea, her face contorted with misery and pain. His lips downturned, but he slid his hand into hers, and briefly, she allowed him to squeeze. Then she yanked it back, features morphing into anger before she shoved her way in, Kiba following after. Shikamaru hopped up from his desk and immediately entered the Hokage’s office before returning for her. When Kiba tried to follow, she stopped shortly and glared up at him.
“That will be all, Kiba,” she spoke clearly, obviously catching the look of hurt flashing over his eyes before his features relaxed. He nodded and turned on his heel, letting her leave freely. When the door shut, he let his shoulders slump with a shaky breath.
What happened to her?
Dutifully, Kiba waited with Shikamaru while Hinata met with Naruto. With crossed arms, he drummed his fingers on his bicep, staring intently at the door.
“Glaring it down won’t make it open sooner,” Shikamaru chided, looking up from the paperwork he was sorting through. Kiba shot him a quick glare before returning his eyes to the door. “Might as well sit down. You just ran, what, 50 kilometers, then another 50?”
“I’m fine,” Kiba said, quickly, brushing him off. Shikamaru rolled his eyes as he looked back down at his paperwork.
“Any clue why she’s so intent on getting out of here?” he asked without raising his eyes. Kiba looked at him incredulously.
“Aren’t you supposed to be the genius Nara of our generation?” he spat back, lowering his eyebrows at him. Shikamaru let out a low chuckle.
“Just wondered what it was from your perspective.” He shrugged, looking back up with idle eyes.
“Naruto and Sakura of course,” he replied quickly, shaking his head. Shikamaru tilted his.
“Think that’s it?” he asked, innocently. Kiba glowered down at his old schoolmate, wondering what he was trying to force out of him. He paused to rake over his own thoughts.
“Well, I mean…I know it hurts her to think of Neji, I guess.” He looked up in thought. “Being at the Hyūga compound doesn’t help with that, I know. She’s also scared of her father, and what plans he might have for her. Plus, just the overall trauma of the war weighs down on all of us, I guess.”
Shikamaru smirked at Kiba’s thoughtfulness. Once a rambunctious, loud mouthed idiot with little regard for others was really a full grown, perceptive adult now. He nodded. “So, if you know all that, maybe you should be a little…I dunno, kinder to her? More understanding?” Kiba lowered his eyes at him, lips pressing into a thin line. “I saw you approach the gates, carrying her. You seemed pretty frustrated out there, big guy.”
Kiba stopped to consider his words. Indeed, he had been incredibly frustrated with her because she had hurt him. And then when he finally got her back, she proceeded to shove what felt like a knife through his heart once more. He wasn’t going to let her go so easily again. But in his fury, his haste to get her back, he hadn’t stopped to consider that it was really for selfish reasons he had gone after her. And his selfish reasons drove him to act in anger with her.
Damnit, now he was feeling guilty.
“Just a thought.” Shikamaru snapped him from his own thoughts as he stretched with a yawn. Kiba crinkled his nose as he caught the yawn, imitating him as he fell back into one of the seats provided.
Hinata had been through a tremendous amount, he knew. And he knew he couldn’t understand the extent of her pain. Through their years, he learned a considerable amount about her past. Her humiliating defeat by Hanabi, the physical and verbal abuse from both her father and Neji before Neji came around. Which of course only made his death all the more tragic. She had spent much of her childhood wishing for him to be her friend once more, her brother.
Finally, she had a spark of happiness in her life when Neji slowly warmed back up. Kiba saw how happy it made her to have him back, even the smallest kindnesses she would gush about. He never really liked the guy, in fact hated him for a good portion of their genin days for his treatment of her and nearly killing her during the chunnin exams. But he had to respect him for the powerhouse and tactician he was. And he couldn’t deny it made him happy to see her happy, so he begrudgingly accepted Neji as a ‘good person.’
When she finally felt she was getting to be on equal footing with him, and felt closer to him than ever, he was killed. In the heat of battle, not too many people saw it happen, and even the people who did had little time to mourn him, including Hinata. The effects didn’t really sink in until they returned home and laid all who fell to rest. Kiba and Shino, along with others who suffered the least losses, were assigned to retrieve bodies. It was one of the worst missions he had to endure in his life. It felt worse than the actual battling itself. It was Kiba who found Neji. Bodies had piled so high, they didn’t have the time or energy to retrieve him when they initially returned home.
It was a gruesome sight. His eye sockets were empty, the caged bird seal activated. But he made getting Neji back his number one priority. When he finally got him to the Hyūga compound and she laid eyes on him, she immediately fell to her knees. Her sobs still haunted him. Hiashi’s cold gaze chilled him as he carefully took the branch Hyūga from his arms. Immediately, he had fallen next to Hinata and held her. It was a position he was unfortunately becoming all too familiar with.
He just wanted to protect her. He wanted to hold her and shield her from the problems of the outside world. Put her in a bubble and never let anything wrong her again.
After a few months of mourning from the entire village, as well as rebuilding, regular missions picked up again. And Hinata began cheering up. She held a strong façade for everyone and resumed missions as team 8. Asuma and Kurenai’s baby was born, and they had a blissful moment as a team to dote on the newest Sarutobi. It really felt like things were getting back to normal. Hinata impressed Kiba beyond his imagination when she heard the news of Sakura and Naruto’s budding romance. She took it in stride, despite a small look of pain flashing over her face when they were mentioned. He really felt like he had his teammate back.
Then Ino and Sai’s wedding happened, and all of her progress came undone.
His initial understanding of her feelings turned to frustration when she didn’t return for some months. Now here he was, having to be told by Shikamaru of all people to consider her feelings.
Love made people stupid, that much was clear.
-
Hinata sat silently in the chair across from Naruto, hands clasped in her lap and staring blankly out the window to her right. Naruto sat at his desk, chin resting on his intertwined hands as he looked on her, debating the best way to start. He had hoped she would come in, ready to talk, ready to say anything, but she simply walked in, bowed, and took a seat, devoid of sound or emotion. The negative energy she was radiating was poisonous. He sighed and finally leaned back in his chair.
He started. “Hinata…I’m sorry it had to be like this.” He paused to see if she would respond, and when there was none, he continued. “I think two years is enough time to wander. Don’t you think you should come home—to the Leaf?” More silence. “Everyone misses you, and team 8 has been lacking-“
“Team 8 disbanded years ago.” Hinata finally spoke bitterly but did not look at him. He frowned at her forwardness.
“But you still function like your team 8—our investigative missions haven’t been the same without you. Your byakugan is the farthest reaching of any Hyūga—” Hinata scoffed at the compliment, Neji had the farthest reaching, “—well. Anyway. Everyone wants you to stay, Hinata. And I really think your sister could use your support right now.”
“What do you know of my sister?” Hinata whispered to her lap. Naruto sighed.
“I know she misses you. I know she talks about you all the time. I know she’s nervous about taking over your clan. I know she’s anxious about the marriage. I know she needs her big sister.”
“And how would you know that?”
“Konohamaru.”
Quiet overtook the room for a few tense minutes before Naruto stood up, rounding his desk to lean back on it.
“Did you find meaning out there?” Naruto finally asked. “Out there, outside the Land of Fire? Did you find what you were looking for?”
Hinata’s breath caught in her throat at the question. In barely a breath, she said, “no.”
“Then don’t you think what you’re looking for…is here?”
No.
No, no, no.
“I have to go.” Hinata stood up abruptly and slammed the door of his office open, trying to escape. Suddenly, she found herself paralyzed, only able to shift her eyes to her left to find Shikamaru with his hands clasped.
“Trying to escape again?” Kiba was to the right, arms folded disapprovingly. She swallowed the lump in her throat before relaxing, realizing she couldn’t escape Shikamaru’s shadow possession jutsu. It was something she had never experienced, and it was terrifying, to be honest. Complete lack of control. Shikamaru sighed as he turned towards Naruto’s form in the frame of the door, forcing her to face him as well. She lowered her eyes to avoid his sympathetic gaze.
“Look Hinata—” Naruto let out a tired sigh as he leaned against the doorframe to his office, “—just stay a few weeks, please? Until after the wedding, sort stuff out. If you still really want to leave…then I’ll grant it to you.”
Hinata jaw clenched. “So, you’re keeping me hostage?”
“You’re a citizen of the Leaf. There are rules, Hinata.” Shikamaru lowered his eyes at her.
“Sorry, Hinata. But I think it’s best you stay a while and cool off. Your sister will be back soon.” Naruto’s voice sounded so…mature and even. She frowned.
“What happened to not being able to argue with Hyūga?” she whispered, pain etched in her voice and tears threatening to fall, causing Naruto to wince. Kiba’s eyes shifted between the three uncomfortably before he stepped towards Hinata.
“Let her go, Shikamaru.” His voice was low. Shikamaru glanced at Naruto who nodded him along. As he released the jutsu, Hinata’s knees buckled, but Kiba was ready to snatch her up.
“I…I can’t go home…” she whispered against his jacket, barely audible. “I don’t have a home.”
“She can’t go back to the Hyūga compound.” Kiba frowned, looking up at Naruto who nodded solemnly.
“I can put her up somewhere…” Naruto offered, but Kiba shook his head.
“I’ll take her for now.” Naruto tilted his head, glancing between the two before nodding once more.
Suddenly, exhaustion took her as the men around her took control of her future. She was helpless. Like always. Black consumed her vision.

40It’s been a while since I’ve done a tag game, but this one seems super fun! Thank you to @kiljoius for tagging me!!

Hinata X Kiba
Rated G
1403 words
Ao3 Link [x]
Hinata realises that she never felt warm until Kiba came into her life.
The moon was still high in the sky when Hinata was brutally awoken by a large dog falling full weight on her face. She shook her hair out and touched her cheek where Akamaru had hit her, trying to get together what had transpired. They had told the dog to sleep on the ground, but he never did, always waiting until both Kiba and her were so fast asleep that they couldn’t stop him from cuddling in between them. This is what years of taking your dog to bed got you, he wasn’t listening when you suddenly told him it was no longer possible.
Now that she was awake there was no way that she was going back to sleep any time soon, especially with the way the dog pressed himself against her. She pushed the blanket away, careful not to wake Kiba as she did and got up to go first to the bathroom and then to the kitchen to get something to drink. It was a clear night with no clouds anywhere in sight and the moon full and beautiful at the highest peak of the sky. She could see through the windows that there was frost everywhere outside. IT was probably ice cold outside.
The apartment itself was also cold, they had forgotten to turn the heating on again. Something that was very strange for her when one thought about her upbringing. In her old house she would have never forgotten to turn the fireplace on in her room, especially when it was freezing in winter. The Hyuuga estate house was so old, that no isolation pretty much meant nothing but longing for thick coats in winter.
Hinata's father hadn’t liked it when she made fire in the middle of the night. He had told her to keep it together, learn how to deal with the cold, like a real shinobi would. She knew that several other family members had complained about the quality of the house especially in winter time and while HInata herself never had complained about it, she still got the most criticism for trying to stay warm. This was how it had always been in what she had called home.
She had been especially in trouble when she made fire during summer, but she couldn’t help it, sometimes the house she felt trapped in made her feel cold and lonely and the only way to feel alright was to make a small fire, watch the logs burn their warmth out to her, give her the understanding back that she was in fact an alive human being deserving of comfort. THough she tried to be sneaky about doing it, the times she was found out meant usually that there was some stricter training on the cards for her the next day.
Really, Hinata didn’t know how real warmth felt until Kiba and Akamaru took up every space in her life, waltzing into her heart like they had owned it and offering her cosy place full of devotion and love and cosyness, something she had missed so much before. For this she was eternally grateful.
Kiba was never cold, he ran so hot that sometimes Hinata woke up sweating at night, wondering if he had a fever (which he never did). Inuzuka really were one with their dogs, with their wild hair and sharp teeth, so they also felt warm and cuddly like a dog ought to. The first time Kiba really held her close she instantly felt so warm and while back then she thought that was just because their feelings for each other were mutual, she was still so thankful for the warmth he was giving her.
“I like being close to you,” she said one day when both of them were sitting next to each other on a couch just enjoying each other's company. “You are warm.” Hinata had her eyes closed and head leaned to his shoulder while Kiba was sharpening some kunai in front of her. She wasn’t quite ready then to tell him “I love you” exactly like that, so she repackaged it into something that meant a similar thing to you. She loved Kiba for many things, but she loved him most because with him she never felt cold.
Kiba blushed instantly. “I like being close to you too,” he replied and lightly knocked his head into hers. “Because you are soft.” For a moment she had thought he would mention that she was cold, but instead he had called her soft, something her father had also called her. The only difference was that Kiba meant it as a compliment, he meant it as something he liked about her.
He seemed to like many things about her that her father had told her were not worth the family name she was carrying. How emotional and caring she was, how her strength was not physical but through empathy, how her bravery came from a place of the heart and not the mind. Ever since they had been assigned into a team together he had not been shy of making  compliments to her when he noticed her self esteem was low. He was even giving out warmth by words alone, a warmth that Hinata soon got addicted to.
Now, with both Kiba and his dog living with her, or rather, her being allowed to live with them, she kept forgetting to turn the heating on or light a fire, mostly because both of them were always around her, their warm nature rubbing off on her. It was like she had never really been warm until she had opened up to the two of them, until they allowed her to come into their lives, their hearts and their bed. Even if that meant the dog should, technically, sleep on the floor.
Hinata walked over to the heater and turned it on, at least a little. No matter how little she felt the cold now, the room needed the heat otherwise who knew if the water in the sink would freeze someday. The radiator jump started and gave off its usual buzzing. She held her hand over it, waiting for it to heat up her cold fingers again. From the bedroom she could hear a loud snore, not sure if it was Kiba or his dog, either way, it made her laugh quietly.
For a while she just stood there, watching the frost glitter on the rooftops of the village with the full moon illuminating the streets like an especially bright headlight. She had always hated winter for the cold nights that left her sleepless, but ever since she had moved out she had started appreciating what people found so wonderful about it. Just a month ago she had stood right here, Kiba’s arm slung around her centre, and watched the snow fall slowly. It had almost felt like out of a story book.
Maybe, she thought sometimes, winter had not been the problem. Maybe the cold and oppressive thing had been the house itself.
She rubbed her toes together and realised that she missed the comfort of her bed, with her boyfriend warming her on one side and his dog warming her from the other. There was no way Akamaru would move to the floor again, now that he had so eloquently thrown himself onto the bed. The only person that could make him was Kiba and it was evident from the snore that he was sleeping peacefully. Hinata’s only choice would be to climb head first under a blanket into the bed again and press herself between them.
With a last look at the moon she brought the glass back into the kitchen and then turned to get back to the bedroom. Just like she had suspected, Akamaru had fully rolled to the other side of the bed, the one she had still comfortably been able to get out of earlier. She giggled a little at the sight in front of her, with both wild boys at the edges of the bed with their limbs hanging down. They were both so cute, she thought, that sometimes there was a real advantage to having a sharingan that could capture memories forever.
She lifted the blanket, climbed beneath it back to her pillow, squeezed herself between Kiba and Akamaru and closed her eyes. It didn’t take long for the wonderful warmth to return to her.
