Kia is set to recall more than 20,000 Telluride SUVs in Canada over a fire risk caused by a faulty front seat adjustment knob. A total of 20,563 Telluride models from 2020 to 2024 are affected in Canada. A similar recall in the U.S.(opens in a new tab) is impacting 462,869 vehicles. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(opens in a new tab), one of the seat adjustment knobs can become stuck and cause the front power seat motor to overheat, potentially leading to fire when parked or driving.

kia ora! i would like to suggest the coining of a term that would hopefully help a large demographic of mostly-forgotten-about māori to connect with each other and share our experiences to feel less alone, congregate around a concept regardless of country of origin and upbringing, and organise as activists.
i politely ask as many people to spread this as possible to help indigenous people organise with each other and to get the largest amount of interactions possible.
anyway, with all that being said,
i would like to coin the term "ngāti rangiātea" for māori who do not know their iwi to use.
this is based on the well known whakataukī/proverb, "i will never be lost, for i am a seed which was sown from rangiātea." i chose this whakataukī due to the spiritual significance of rangiātea as a place in māori culture, as well as to emphasise that no matter how it feels, we are not lost, we can find ourselves in each other, we can experience strength and self-realisation, and that we will exist with mana and without whakamā as rightful tangata whenua.
i've put my reasoning, personal experiences shaping my viewpoints on the matter, and various statistics under the cut to make this post reblog-friendly and i would suggest fellow māori read it regardless of whether or not they know their iwi. i also ask for the opinions of other māori, ESPECIALLY AND SPECIFICALLY other māori who do not know their iwi. in fact, i politely ask māori to share this with their whānau and people in general to share this with māori they know, especially any they know who do not know their iwi. a wide reach is what i am going for to get the largest amount of voices, critiques, and opinions on the topic and to avoid this from just becoming a very small thing that stays in an online echo-chamber.
to begin, the 2018 aotearoan census shows that, of the 775,836 people identifying as māori in aotearoa, roughly 17% are unable to identify their iwi in the census. this has gone up by 1% since 2006, showing that we are a considerably stable percentage of people. along with this, there are more than 170,000 māori living in australia and, while there are no solid statistics, there are an estimated 8,000 māori living in the UK, 3,500 in the US, 2,500 in canada, and 8,000 in other countries where there's no option for māori or any polynesians on the census.
this number adds up to 967,816 total māori and while there's no census in these countries asking for your iwi, i would go as far as to assume that there's a larger number of diaspora māori who are no longer able to identify their iwi than there are in aotearoa. of course, this is just speculation based on my lived experiences and conversations with other diaspora māori, however even assuming that it's the exact same amount globally, 17%, this is roughly 164,532 māori worldwide who do not know their iwi. nearly one in five māori do not know their iwi.
regardless of the specific statistics, the hard fact here is that there is a large percentage of māori who are unsure of their iwi for whatever reason. it's extremely easy to feel unsure of yourself, lost, disconnected, and uncomfortable speaking on issues regarding te ao māori when you're unsure of your iwi (or your hapū, whānau, waka, or anything else, but there is heavy emphasis on the iwi) and it's very easy for whakamā to take hold, especially when many māori who can recite their whakapapa aren't very polite or understanding about your situation to say the least.
and there are a lot of those people.
unfortunately, i've spoken to many māori who are of the opinion that not knowing your iwi due to colonialism, assimilation, forced disconnection, etc. means that you should not, cannot, call yourself māori. this is a disgusting viewpoint to have and in my opinion it spits on the fundamental concepts of māori culture and worldviews. thankfully this is a small yet vocal group of people, but even so, they add to the collective experience that makes it extremely difficult to navigate a world while full of whakamā and internalised racism. it can feel like there's no space for you, no term you can use, nobody you can relate to, no mana you can claim, nothing. when you cannot recite your whakapapa, it can feel like there's a part of you that's fundamentally missing.
as well as this, even when people mean well, when you are in this situation, you're usually told to just do some genealogy work, do some research, ask your family what they know. sometimes, these steps are simply not possible. other times, we've already done everything suggested over and over and over again. we're generally told "oh, that sucks, but one day you'll find out, keep looking!" in response to our lack of iwi. sure, they mean well, but i have never once been told anything along the lines of "that's okay, some things are lost to time through no fault of your own. don't beat yourself up over something your whānau had to hide to survive, what you do now to uphold your family's mana, what you do know about your whānau, and who you ultimately become is more important than what you no longer know."
and why? why is it seen as shameful to say matter-of-factly that i don't know my iwi? i'm not looking for comfort, i'm not looking to be told that, aww, there there, i'll find it eventually. i'm stating a fact. i do not need pity, i need my mana and voice to be respected.
this concept is what i want to emphasise by coining ngāti rangiātea. some things are lost to time, but we aren't. our loss of knowledge does not mean that we are unworthy of being māori, that we are unworthy of basic human respect. it does not mean that we have lost everything that our whānau knows. it is a scar, a reminder of what colonisation took from us, yes, but we cannot allow it to continue to be an open bleeding wound. we will not be lost to time and we should not bow our heads and act like we do not exist, that we're inconvenient, that we damage the "image" that māori have. in fact, we are an important aspect of māori culture and ignoring our existence does harm to everybody.
and of course we can't speak on some topics regarding te ao māori. this seems to be a topic that comes up frequently as a strawman. yes, there are some topics that would be irresponsible to speak on when we have no experience with them. this doesn't mean we can't speak on anything. having a collective identity, an "iwi" to congregate around even just politically, would help us speak on topics that we are more qualified to speak on than māori with knowledge of their iwi (yes, those topics exist, shockingly.)
we will never be lost, for we are a seed sown in rangiātea.
by identifying as ngāti rangiātea, i wish to emphasise that it's important to accept that sometimes, someone just won't be able to find every piece of information. loss of family knowledge is literally one of the primary goals of forced assimilation! we all went through it as colonised peoples, why must we continue to attach shame to those of us who were forced to obfuscate our history to keep our children alive? it's not a personal flaw, it's not a dirty secret, it's a fact of life that must not continue to be kept quiet out of shame, and the sooner we can focus on healing this subsection of our community, the stronger māori as a whole will become.
so, this is why i'd like to coin a term for māori who are unsure of their iwi. this is what i intend to achieve by giving us a name, our own "iwi" to congregate around, to identify ourselves as. instead of hanging my head and saying "i'm not sure what my iwi is, i'm sorry", instead of feeling inclined to beg like a dog to be treated with respect, i would like to look people in the eye and tell them that i am ngāti rangiātea. i would like this label to be synonymous with strength and not shame, that i refuse to let my whakamā swallow me, that i am just as worthy of calling myself māori as anyone else, that there are many others in my iwi (or lack thereof). i would like other people to have that as well and i would like those like me to feel less lost when all they've been told is "well, you'll learn your iwi eventually!" as if that's going to help someone feel better if they can't find their iwi.
and even if a person finds their iwi eventually, it's absolutely disgraceful that people are treated that they're not allowed to access many basic parts of te ao māori until they discover something they are not even 100% destined to find. i think that this view contributes to a lot of people who eventually find their iwi becoming unnecessarily arrogant towards those who truly cannot find this information, that they're just not putting enough effort in. if a person finds their iwi after identifying as ngāti rangiātea, they are fully welcome to continue to identify as this political label along with the iwi they now know they belong to as i wish for it to be a term that describes your experiences, your upbringing, and your community. you don't suddenly lose your whānau or your lived experience when you discover your whakapapa.
finally, this hopefully goes without saying, but ngāti rangiātea is not meant to function as a real existing iwi does. the term will hopefully be used as a way to identify yourself and other people and organise but i don't expect nor do i want this to be treated like a coordinated iwi. i expect and hope for this to be a decentralised way of identifying and experiencing community to make it easier to organise as a people. think of this the way the terms ngāti kangaru, ngāti rānara, ngāti tūmatauenga etc. are used.
-----
so, the tl;dr is that i feel like coining a name for a phenomenon that nearly one in five of all māori experience in quiet shame, to make it easier for us to congregate and find each other, speak on our experiences, organise as activists, feel less lost, and ultimately give us the ability to regain our mana as a community with shared goals and experiences. i have spoken to many māori who feel this way and my suggestion for this term is ngāti rangiātea, to show homage to the well known whakataukī, "i will never be lost, for i am a seed sown from rangiātea", to give us a community to work with, and to give us an "iwi" to list when asked instead of fumbling for words and feeling whakamā.
i would like to take the emphasis off of constantly looking to the future for what you may or may not even find with this identity. we are not broken, we are not lost, for we are seeds sown in ngāti rangiātea.
tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā tatou katoa, and if you got this far, thank you for reading.

No queríamos, pero... you wanted a wall, you are going to get a wall.
Cordially,
The rest of the world.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As they voted to build a wall… well, my curious North Americans, even though we don't have much geography, and that for us America is its own country and not a continent, it is important that before placing the first thieves, they enter of what they are leaving outside this wall.
Outside there are 7 million billion people; but as we often hear many of these people, we will call them consumers. There are 7 billion consumers willing to replace their iPhone with Samsung or Huawei in less than 42 hours. Also you can replace Levi's by Zara or Massimo Duti. Quietly, in less than half a year, we can stop buying Ford or Chevrolet vehicles and replace them with a Toyota, KIA, Mazda, Honda, Hyundai, Volvo, Subaru, Renault or BMW, which are technically much superior to the cars we produce. We could also stop subscribing to Direct TV and we wouldn't like it, but we could stop watching Hollywood films and focus on more Latin American or European productions that have superior quality, screenplay, cinematographic techniques and content. Even if it seems incredible, we can leave it at Disney and attend the Xcaret park in Cancún, Mexico, Canada or Europe: there are other excellent destinations in Suramérica, the East and Europe. And although they don't create it, including in Mexico they have better hamburgers than McDonalds and with a better nutritional content.
Has anyone seen any pyramid in United States? Egypt, Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, South America and other countries have pyramids with incredible cultures.
Find out where the wonders of the ancient and modern world are…
Nothing is in the United States… It's worth it for Trump, well, the best thing to buy and sell!
We know that Adidas exists and not just Nike and we can well start wearing Mexican tennis like Panama. We know much more than what you believe; Let us know, for example, that 7 billion consumers do not buy their products, we have seen an example and the economy (inside the racist wall) will collapse to the point that we will try to destroy the fateful wall.
We don't ask, but… you wanted a wall, you are going to get a wall.
Sincerely,
The rest of the world.

NYE
Please forgive any typos as I wrote this at 2/3am and am currently fighting sleep as I write this introduction.
Some of this is inspired by my feelings this year but most is just fantasy on what I wish I could have. Too bad my partner lives in Canada, huh?
CW:
Unexpected hiccups
Lots of writing pre hiccuping
Crying due to "Imagine" written by John Lennon
Frustration at the greed and ego in the world
Hiccups while tired.
Fast hiccups
Muffled hiccups
Frustration at hiccups
Too tired to (literally) give a fuck
Adorable couple shit
Bad jokes
Cuddling with hiccups
Corporate America
Jokes about NYC ball dropping
New Years Eve was very chill this year. Mark was with Alice's family and the kids. Jon was visiting Ralph's family for the first time. Cindy had burnt herself out during the holidays and Margie and her were recuperating from Thanksgiving and Christmas volunteer work in addition to Cindy's social media responsibilities. (There was serious discussion about retiring or stepping back from that particular vocation.)
And so, the two homebodies were sat together as the most anticipated ball drop in the country in New York's yearly salute to asymmetrical puberty was presented on screen.
"I think it even has blue lights this year," Atticus snarked with a snort.
"Oof! Sounds painful," Otto answered with a wince as he caught another deep yawn and rubbed his eyes with the palm of his hand as they both leaned against each other on the couch in front of the television.
Turning away from what Atticus wryly referred to as the yearly scrotum lowering and the new year's first wet dream, the writer chuckled to see their husband squint at the screen in an effort to look alert.
There were many ways in which Otto and Atticus were compatible. Their sleep schedules were not one of them.
While Otto preferred to go to bed in order to get up at the first rays of sun from the horizon's butt crack, Atticus sought out to test the possibility of their nocturnal ancestry.
It was when the last song before countdown was "Imagine" by John Lennon that Atticus' spirit changed from casual bemusement and mild disgust at the sheer corporate wallpapering of the New York tableau to sudden sadness.
"Dammit," they said as the woman on the screen belted the lyrics out beautifully with soft reverence in her voice.
Otto flinched in a startle as they felt Atticus' smaller body suddenly lean into his more desperately and he lifted an arm to accommodate the position and circle it around their body. They felt his spouse huff and groan a little.
"Um...you okay?" he hazarded an ask.
"I hate this song," they whispered. "Makes me cry."
"Oh," Otto said, brows rising. He rubbed Atty's shoulder softly at the rare display of emotional vulnerability.
"I know it's stupid," Atty muttered.
"No...it's not," Otto said with a squeeze to their shoulders. "But...can I...ask why?"
"Because," Atticus said after a moment, "it's sincere and simple and...and no matter how many times people sing or hear it nothing in this fucking world will ever change for people to actually be able to want any of what the lyrics say to be true. There's too much greed and ego and..." another sniff "...I hate it. Shit, the countdown's about to start, where's my sparkling drink thing?"
"I got it," Otto said softly as he leaned over and handed them the fluted glass as he took his own.
"Thanks," Atty huffed as they swiped a hand under their eyes shoving at the frames of their glasses. "I'm okay," they said to the worried look they saw in their periphery.
Otto put a hand on Atty's back as both started counting down from 10 at the cues on the screen. As usual Otto groused at the 'live' feed being almost a minute delayed as the new year ball landed just after his clocks struck midnight, chiming and striking filling the room during the countdown.
Nevertheless, the couple wished each other a Happy New Year as the Kia sponsored electric ball cued fireworks probably sponsored by another corporation and music sponsored by a couple of other corporate entities to play the beginning of Auld Lang Syne quickly cut off in favor of playing New York New York.
Atty turned and gave their husband's sparkling tea moistened lips a kiss and he smiled in return before his head jerked back suddenly.
The writer's eyes widened along with Otto's as his head jerked back again and again until they could hear the muffled hiccups. Otto scoffed a hiccuping laugh as he leaned back, letting his back rest into the soft couch as his body continued to convulse, stomach jostling visibly even through his shirt.
Atticus couldn't help but grab the remote and turn the sound down before cuddling into their husband with a bit of shameless excitement.
"You okay?" they asked.
"Yeah," he said with breathy amusement and another muffled hiccup. "I didn't really hmm'mp!mp! expect a c-mmp!-case today! Well...tom-hmm'mp!-o-hrmmp'mm! tomorrow tech-hi'mmp!-nically. Uuuuh...hi'mmp!"
"You need a cure? It's late for you. Way past Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!" Atticus teased.
Otto rolled his eyes.
"I'm fi-hmm!-fine. The--y're pretty hmm'mm!hmp!hi'mm!mk!-mm, mild, actually. Just fa-hmm!-fast like us--usual!" he said. "I don't hm'mm! think they'll heh'mm!mm! last lo--long."
The way Otto's neck tucked down as he pushed words through his hiccups silently arresting them always drove Atticus a little insane. The way his voice dipped in octave as his throat opened to spasm again was hot in a way Atty knew they'd never be able to describe no matter how good they were with words.
"If you're sure," they said having discarded their flute of sparkling beverage so their hand could rest just under his ribcage.
Otto nodded as he calmly let his body jump with every jerking flinch of his diaphragm. He almost took another drink of the fizzy liquid before he caught himself.
"Though huh'mm!hmm!hm!hm'mm!-uh, I probably should--n't drink h'mm! anymore of hih'mm!mm! this!" he said, holding the glass up.
"Got it!" Atticus said and helpfully took the glass putting it on the coffee table.
"Tha-hungk! you!" he said, finding it less of an effort to let the hiccup complete the word than having to repeat it again. "You humm! okay no-huh'm!-not do--doing anything huh!hu'ump!mmk! wi--with these to-hmm!-night?"
Atticus looked up into the worry-tinged tiredness of Otto's face. If they stared long enough, they would be able to see the guilt edging in. They watched him keep eye contact with them even as his hiccups tugged his head back and tucked his chin down in rapid succession. Atty stroked his chest fondly.
"This holiday season has been robust in your diaphragmic flirtations. I think I can hold myself back from ravishing you this one time," they said with a sly smile.
"Mm huh'mm! your restr-mmk!hih'mmk!-restraint is ap--uh! appreciated and admi--adm--hmk!huh!mk!-admirable! Ugh!" Otto said with frustration as he finally laid a hand on his chest and leaned his head back. "Gir--gird your HUH! lo--ins, they-hup!hip!hu'up!-'re doing that hi'ip!ngk!hingk! thi--thing whe-hup!-where they hulmp! g--get wo-erk!h'muck!-worse befo--before they ngk!ngk!-uh-huck! st--stop! Go-hup!-gosh!"
"Bud, my loins have been girded since the first one," Atticus informed him.
"Heh! Huh!huh!-uuuuh. hu'UP!hungk!-mm."
He continued to encourage deeper breaths, but his hiccups kept rapid firing through the attempts leaving him grunting, breathless, and frowning. He raised his shirt up and gave an imploring look to his partner.
"Could you huh!hump'k!huck'm!mk!-uh! Cou--ld you ru-hup!humpk!uck'm!mmp!mm!-ugh!..."
"I got you!" Atticus said as they put their hand on his belly as it popped quickly, jiggling or tightening with each spasm. They also focused on the space right below his ribs as he'd told them he felt his hiccups higher than his belly despite how much action seemed to take place visually in that area. Right below his ribs tended to be where he felt soreness if they went on too long.
"You sure you don't need to cure..." Atty offered one more time.
"Yeah hmk! I'm not hm!mk! uncomf--forta--ble mmk!mm!h'mp! just mk! annoyed hu'uh! and ti--tired-UP!-uh," he said, letting another breath out to more hiccups.
"And you're definitely not keeping them for me," Atticus confirmed.
"Hilmp!...I mean ever-hmp year sta--rts off mk! with a--a few hmph! hiccups. Why mk! not le--t yours hrmph! be mine? Mk!" he said with a drowsy grin.
"That was terrible," Atticus said in mock disgust.
Otto's grin only grew wider.
"Truly awful," they said.
Otto shrugged with a smug expression.
"I'm so proud of you. Seriously. Your terrible sense of humor has grown so much under my tutelage," they said smiling.
"No one hmph! is more hmm!mm!huh'mm! impressed a--and appalled tha-nk!nk!-than I am!" he said.
Atticus laughed and wrapped their arms around his body as far as they'd go as Otto embraced them back. Sitting like this in the warmth of their husband they felt protected as they relished the last strong spasms of his hiccup attack.
They felt his arms go a bit slack after a while and heard his breath even. Atticus leaned out of his presence with regret and put a hand on his chest before he went too deeply asleep.
"Hey, you. Time to hit the hay, cowboy," Atty said as they tapped the end of his nose.
Otto groaned and stretched.
"Kay. Yeah. Happy New Year, Atty," he mumbled.
"Happy New Year, Otto," they responded as they both turned off lights, disposed of dishes, and headed up stairs.

Hyundai and Kia have issued a recall for several vehicle models and are urging drivers to park away from buildings due to the risk that the issue could start a fire. Hyundai says the recall involves 326,942 vehicles in Canada and 1,642,551 vehicles in the U.S. Hyundai's recalled vehicles(opens in a new tab) include certain 2010-15 models of the Accent, Elantra, Tucson, Sante Fe and others. According to the notice, the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) in the vehicles could leak brake fluid and cause an electrical short over time, which may start a fire while the car is parked or driving.

🌸🌷?
Thank you so much for the ask @kia-is-poisoned !
🌸 What does your OC’s voice sound like? Their laugh? Are they good at singing? Do they have an accent?
🌷 In what ways would your OC alter their body if they could? How would they do it using mundane means (hair dye, surgery, make-up?). What is their ideal look for themself?
Voice
Marril - He's got like one of those deep gravelly voices. His accent is somewhere between Russian and Portuguese, but it tips more toward Portuguese. (Caliskian accent) He's got a pretty nice singing voice, and a friendly laugh.
Shyre - She's more musical, and clear with an almost sing-song king of voice. She's got a very pretty laugh and she's got like a French Canadian accent. (Noble accent)
Kasi - She has a more general, average teenager voice, Not very angsty, but very clear, and she talks pretty loud most times. She's got a nice laugh, she's fine at singing, and Her accent is probably a mix between Swedish and USA Midwest. (Lower Class Feyranite)
Xhaazi - He's got a pretty clear, bored voice, he's awful at singing, but has a nice laugh. He's got the same accent as his sister.
Chrin - He has a clear, almost chirpy kind of voice, with an upbeat laugh. He's pretty good at singing, and has a mix between USA Midwest and French Canadian. (Mix of Noble and Working class)
Sokuna - She has a stern, adult voice, is average at singing, has an okay laugh, and a full USA Midwestern Accent
Viasaki - Soft, smooth voice. He's got a pleasant laugh, and is an 8/10 singer. He's got a Light hint of a southern USA accent from his childhood (Shrima)
Kila - Harsh, sharp and hissing voice, Actually a very pretty singer, A pretty laugh too, with a sort of Canada/Northern USA accent
Geon - He's got a nice, quiet yet clear voice, with a very pleasant laugh, and a nice light English Accent (Ahelite and Roselite Combo)
Body
None of my characters give a shit about how they look other than maybe Viasaki.
He hates his extra feathers and scales because of his mother, and routinely, plucks them or pulls them out.

TATE MCRAE’S HIGHLY ANTICIPATED THIRD ALBUM So Close To What RELEASING FEBRUARY 21ST; NEW SONG AND VIDEO FOR “Sports car” OUT NOW
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b169004911d1a139b22347ebe81e01fd/a44fa883944b4483-e8/s540x810/f4819133cd3bff63fdb02daa3cca57231c968607.jpg)
Multi-platinum pop sensation Tate McRae is set to release her highly anticipated third album So Close To What on February 21st via RCA Records. Through unfiltered lyricism and raw emotions, So Close To What represents the journey of growing up when the road ahead feels infinite and the destination increasingly elusive. It’s an introspective exploration of self-discovery, love, and searching for balance in moments of uncertainty. Pre-save HERE.
Today, Tate releases her irresistible new song “Sports car” alongside the official music video. It’s written and produced with hitmakers Ryan Tedder (Taylor Swift, Beyoncé), Grant Boutin (Meghan Trainor, One Republic) and Julia Michaels (Selena Gomez, Dua Lipa).
youtube
The provocative video is directed by Bardia Zeinali (Sabrina Carpenter, Troye Sivan) and styled by Brett Alan Nelson (Doja Cat, Karol G). It follows Tate as a viewer into her own dynamic world intertwined with high fashion moments and different characters. In a society that is constantly watching and judging, Tate becomes the observer and takes back control. Through her perspective, we are immersed in a powerful interplay of style and identity, where fashion becomes more than just clothing— it’s the canvas for her evolving identity. Each look tells a story, reflecting a different persona she embodies.
“Sports car” follows “2 hands” and “It’s ok I’m ok” which hit #1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Pop Songs chart and earned the star her highest-debuting song of her career on the Billboard Hot 100.
In March, Tate will embark on her world ‘Miss Possessive Tour’ spanning South America, Europe, UK, and North America. Produced by Live Nation, the tour kicks off on March 18th in Mexico City at Pepsi Centre, with shows in São Paulo, London, Amsterdam, Prague, New York, Nashville, and many more before wrapping up in Los Angeles at the Kia Forum on September 26th. Benee will be joining as support on all Europe and UK dates while Zara Larsson will join Tate across all US and Canada dates.

Tbh I think Kia's playing so much better this season than she was last year. Maybe Seattle didn't predict that?
I certainly didn't, I'm now more concerned about Canada at the Olympics 😭😭
US, Canada, France, Belgium, China, and Australia all look very good. And there's only three spots on the podium. So three of those teams will leave the Olympics empty handed.
If Satou is healthy, Germany could win a game in pool play that wrecks another team's tournament seeding. Spain with Megan Gustafson could also be challenging in pool play. And Japan always finds a way to make the tournament round.
