Even though Charles Xavier is locked up in his special prison, he checks on the mutants with his telepathy and astral projection about how they are moving on without Krakoa. However, Xavier falls into a coma from exerting himself with his astral projection.

Now that my dear mutuals have finally watched The Wrath of Khan courtesy of yours truly, I can commence with the next edition of my series on “all the casual Spirk-y moments in the movies”:
Jim smiling at Spock after the Kobayashi Maru test, teasing him that he’s dead and so is everyone on the ship
Spock getting Jim an antique book that Jim loves (showing how well they know each other)
“He’s so… human.” “Nobody’s perfect.”
Before he would’ve been annoyed at Jim’s humanity, but now he just looks on with fondness—his humanity isn’t a flaw but an asset
Jim trying to give command to Spock since it’s the right thing to do, but Spock knowing how desperately Kirk wants it & being aware that Jim needs to command right now for his mental health
“Commanding a starship is your first, best destiny. Anything else is a waste of material.”
“You are my commanding officer. You are also my friend. I have been and shall always be yours.”
Not ashamed of friendship anymore! Spock is unabashed about his love/affection for Jim and doesn’t care who knows it
Saavik quoting regulations at Jim and Spock immediately shutting her down in his defense (“the admiral knows the regulations”) even though he’s always the one to stick by the very same regs
When Jim realizes he needs to negotiate terms of surrender, he immediately looks desperately at Spock, since it’s always been Spock who has gotten him out of no-win scenarios in the past
Jim and Spock nearly wordlessly communicating to get the Reliant’s prefix code & working seamlessly when no one else knows what they’re talking about
When Jim, McCoy, and Saavik are about to beam down, Spock says with extreme concern “Jim, be careful” while not gaf about anyone else (Bones even points this out)
More wordless communication between Jim & Spock where Spock literally lies on the communicator to throw Khan off, but Jim still trusts/knows him enough somehow to exactly predict when he’s going to be back to beam them back up
As soon as he sees Spock he beams as he cries “Spock!” and rushes toward him
Spock deciding to sacrifice himself for Jim/the Enterprise without hesitation
After Jim notices Spock is gone from the bridge, he goes into a near-panic, rushing toward the warp drive and even pushing a crew member out of the way to get to Spock faster (uncharacteristically, his voice shakes when giving Saavik the con)
When Jim sees that Spock is dying, he rushes toward him in desperation and has to be physically held back by both Bones and Scotty
Jim crying out in tears for “Spock!” and Spock, blinded now, still knowing that it’s Jim just because of that one word
Spock still adjusting his uniform for Jim when he turns around because he wants to look presentable even in his last moments
Jim’s absolute horror as the graceful Vulcan he knows crashes into the door
Spock repeating that he has been and always shall be Jim’s friend and imploring him not to grieve because it was logical
Spock, with his last strength, pressing the Vulcan salute to the glass as Jim presses his own palm to it, then slowly falling to the floor
Jim follows him down and begins tearing up, completely anguished
Finally, Spock telling Jim to live long and prosper with his last breath
He doesn’t want Jim to be caught up in his grief; he wants Jim to continue living and thriving
When he sees Spock collapse dead, all Jim can say is “no” (softly, helplessly) as he collapses with him
He has a thousand-yard stare as he gazes at nothing, completely lost in his grief
He does not even cry - the enormity of his grief is too much
“Of all the souls I have encountered, his was the most… human.”
Jim’s voice cracks as he delivers this eulogy and he’s barely keeping it together
David telling Jim that he’s never had to face death, and Jim agreeing that it’s never been like this before (despite the fact that he’s endured the death of his brother, several lovers including his wife & unborn child, crew members he’s responsible for, etc none can compare to Spock)
He looks completely defeated and empty, like he’s unable to feel any happiness or really anything at all anymore
Jim admits he really should be on the bridge but he can’t bring himself to go
Jim has never shied away from his duty until now
Jim melts into David’s hug, essentially a stranger, because he’s so upset
Jim looking wistfully at the Genesis planet as he remarks “it’s a far, far better thing I do than I have ever done before” - Spock’s parting gift to him for his birthday, a remark that it’s better to have died saving the greater good than to live knowing that you could’ve
Jim feels young upon reflecting on this, knowing that Spock would’ve wanted him to keep going but resolving to always visit the Genesis planet but also realizing that he has many more lonely decades without Spock
This movie broke my heart when I first saw it, but it was much more fun the next time around where I got to lie to my friend @phobicon that Spock totally didn’t die… (btw dear mutual, stop reading here if you don’t want spoilers)

Went to see The Marvels tonight and it was brilliant. Plenty of action, comedy, drama and time/space travel shenanigans.
(Spoilers ahead)
So Carol Danvers is Captain Marvel and also technically a Disney Princess. She sang and danced with a Prince (who she is married to) in a ball gown.
Goose had a litter of flurkin/kittens that saved the crew of SABER by eating them then spitting them out later.
The ending is opening up the possibility of multiverse travel with Monica being on a parallel earth with Maria Rambeau and Beast at the X-Men mansion. Is this how we get X-Men and mutants in the MCU?
Cameos of Valkyrie who is a friend of Carol’s that she can call in an emergency (when did that friendship happen?), Kate Bishop and Pizza dog who Kamala wants to recruit for a new team which might include Ant-Man’s daughter Cassie and Beast played by Kelsey Grammer with the mention of Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart? 🤞).

Nine more days to get your prompts, folks! @mizjoely, if you want five more feel free to ask for some as well!
Molly Hooper Appreciation Week Winter 2023 Prompt-A-Thon!
So I figured out what to do for Molly Hooper Appreciation Week literally a few minutes ago so I'm sorry there's no hoopla or time to plan!
For a holiday_wishes gift on Dreamwidth (I linked to the profile in case anyone else wants to participate...it's a lot of fun and my daughter and I are both participating this year), I recently compiled over 1,000 non-fandom/non-character specific prompts. Included in that are 750 sentence starter prompts/text message prompts. So I'm going to randomly give some of the prompts out to you guys!
HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE MOLLY HOOPER APPRECIATION WEEK WINTER PROMPT-A-THON
Send me an ask at @mollyappreciationweek with how many prompts you want (no more than five; if you finish your five you can get up to five more each time you finish five).
Let me know whether you want a sentence starter prompt, a regular prompt (better for artwork/gif sets/etc), a mix or it doesn't matter.
Let me know which blog you want me to send the prompt(s) to; if you have a writing or fandom blog where you post your art, include that username and I will send your asks there from my main blog (@mousedetective...if you have my main blocked and still want to participate, I can DM them to you).
I will send each prompt as a separate ask; please reply to the ask with the fic or a link to it when you're done. Please also @ @mollyappreciationweek somewhere in the ask so it goes on the blog's activity, in case I miss an answer.
I will reblog your fic to the main Molly Hooper Appreciation Week blog. The fics do not need to be themed about winter, Christmas or New Year's, but I will be giving out prompts from December 1st to December 31st. You can answer them at your leisure, even if it takes a while (our AO3 collection is always up to late answers).
RULES
- Any kind of fanwork you can think of is acceptable for this week: fanfic, fanart, fanvids, manipulations, gifsets (please make sure they are your gifs, though, and you’re not taking them from others without permission), meta, headcanons…anything you can think of that would celebrate Molly Hooper that would fit in with a prompt will be accepted with much pleasure.
- Be kind and respectful to everyone participating. We don’t want any wank because this is a week for sharing our love for a character who loves pretty much everyone we’ve seen her meet.
- If there’s something submitted that you like, please like it (or even better, reblog it so others can see it too)! If there’s a link to it on another website, go to that website and leave them love there as well.
- Any and all romantic ships are allowed. Het, femslash, poly…you ship it, we want to see it! We turn no one away. All ships are valid ships. Likewise, all takes on Molly’s sexuality and gender are valid for this week as well. Not everyone shares the same headcanons but we should all be respectful of others.
- If you post something for the day, please make sure one of your first five tags is “molly appreciation week”. We will not be using secondary tags this round as we don’t want to clog the tags this round.
- If you want your work to be reblogged on @mollyappreciationweek you must @ the blog somewhere in your post. I get alerts on the activity when the blog is mentioned and then I will know to go and save your post to the drafts to reblog when the round is over. I will still check the tag but there is no guarantee I will see your post unless you @ @mollyappreciationweek as well.
AO3 COLLECTION
There will be a collection, as per usual, which will be opened as soon as I make it for people to post their works. It will remain open for perpetuity as you are always allowed to answer these prompts even after the posting dates are officially over. When it is created you will be able to find it on the parent collection (so this way the link is sort of up now and not lost in reblogs).

Hello! New to the X-men fandom, drawn here by Scott Summers (I love your blog so much!) Two questions, if you don't mind:
1. What would you consider essential reads for Scott specifically? There are so many starting points it seems.
2. I did finish Whedon's run of Astonishing X-Men (at the recommendation of reddit) and was wondering if Scott (now?) doesn't need his ruby quartz glasses/visor? Sorry if that's a run-specific question!
Hello!
The first question is surprisingly difficult, only because Scott's such a staple throughout the entirety of the X-Men. So let me kind of give you a run down of your options.
--
The 60s comics are really fun, if you want to see where things began. It is very 60s though, and the style may not be to your taste. There's also some period sexism that's not great (though surprisingly less than I expected. Possibly because Jean's meant to be a fairly liberated teen, as opposed to older ladies like Sue Storm or Janet Van Dyne.)
The Claremont Era (Starting with Giant-Sized X-Men, which introduces staples like Storm and Wolverine) is probably what will be the most familiar to folks who became used to the X-Men from other sources, like the cartoons. The Animated Series and X-Men '97 adapt a lot of Claremont era stuff, so it'll be pretty familiar.
It's also soapy and dramatic, and Scott (and Jean) feature very heavily. You'll also meet Rachel. Rachel is fun.
X-Factor's first run is something I'd recommend only after you've gotten into the character more. It's actually really good, IMO, and an amazing deconstruction of how much of a trainwreck the poor guy actually is. It's not always a flattering portrayal though, which is part of what makes it interesting. (It is good though to read the Madelyne stuff for yourself eventually, summaries tend to ignore the aspects that make Scott's side of things a bit more understandable, if not sympathetic.) Baby Cable is here too.
The 90s X-Comics are pretty fun too, like the earlier Claremont era, this is likely what folk are familiar with if they remember the cartoons. Costumes, characters, and so on. Scott is one of a very large cast, but he tends to have some really good arcs here and there. The art takes getting used to it. This is where you'll start seeing adult Cable as a major character. And another AU Summers child, Nate Grey. He's complicated.
the 2000s-2011 era of Comics have a lot of upheaval and events. Scott is still an idealist, but he's been jaded by a lot of events (and will be jaded by more). You'll see him get darker here, but not evil. It's pretty sad though. SO MANY big events though, Scott pulls off a lot of wild shit.
In 2011-2016, we have two Scotts basically. Avengers vs. X-Men is a massively huge event that changes Scott's role for a long time. For our main Scott, the next few years are going to read a lot like whump fic. He's going to suffer, people are going to blame him (unfairly, imo!) for a lot of things, and he'll be treated like a monster at times. That said, there are people who do see the truth and end up even joining him.
But also around this time, through shenanigans (read: Hank McCoy), the timeline is disrupted and the 1960s era Original Five (specifically circa issue #8) are brought to the future. They have their own adventures in lines like All-New X-Men (v1. and v2.), X-Men Blue, and Scott specifically has a solo series early on and then joins up with Kamala Khan's Champions and it's darling.
Eventually older Scott "dies" (it happens in comics). Young Scott continues though. When Young Scott goes to the past again, older Scott comes back (unrelated reasons).
For 2019-2020, there's a short run by Matthew Rosenberg, starting at issue 11 or so. The original team of X-Men is presumed dead (really they're dealing with some multiversal nonsense. Possibly Nate Grey's fault), and a returned Scott starts gathering new X-Men. It's intense, angsty and kind of bleak. This isn't about saving the world anymore, just maybe going out doing what they should.
From 2020-2023, we get a massive, amazing change in direction called the Krakoa arc. Scott's not featured as prominently here (It's Xavier's show), but he's solid in any series that he appears (Adjectiveless X-Men will always have him somewhere. He's very prominent in Teen Cable's book too.) Krakoa is something very different than anything the X-Men series(es) have done before and it's definitely worth reading. Though for my own taste, I like the return to form that comes with...
Our current era is "From the Ashes" and it's not actually a bad place to jump on. Everyone's a little scattered and out of sorts since the fall of Krakoa, but Scott, being who he is, has already pulled his own book together for the kind of mutant-rescuing heroics that he is wont to do.
As to where to start? Honestly, I'd go with whatever seems the most fun to you. Eventually, I think, you'll find yourself branching out and it won't be nearly so confusing. (There are also wikis, podcasts, and annoying pedants like me who like explaining everything.). Fans will often have their favorite special books (Children of the Atom, for example, is probably my favorite version of the O5 origin. It came out in 2001 and has a truly horrifying Jack Winters), and we'll always leap on the opportunity to share those things.
-------------------------------------------
as for 2. I don't know if you read the Giant-Sized finale of Astonishing X-Men, but they do have a scene where Scott's eyes start glowing again and Emma places the visor on him. It's a nice, quietly somber scene.
In current X-continuity, Scott does still need the visor. The inability to control his blasts may have a psychological component but there's also physical brain damage. (In the Krakoa arc, there are mechanisms where he might have repaired said damage, but it actually does come up at some point, and he specifically chooses not to. I hope I can find that page again, because I feel like there's a lot of interesting potential meta in that choice.)
I don't think they ever really revisit why Emma (or Cassandra, possibly) had been able to neutralize Scott's blasts/restore temporary control over them, but I tend to go with the interpretation that a powerful enough telepath could force a bypass with his powers, but it's an incredibly traumatic, potentially damaging, and ultimately temporary solution. Hence, what we see.
For her part, Jean Grey (at least in the modern era) is able to psychically block his powers. And that's always fun. (And sometimes a little kinky!)

ok, now that i've watched all of tos (none of the movies yet...) i am going to do the top ten worst and best episodes, according to Me. they are as follows:
WORST EPISODES
10. the savage curtain - idk who thought putting abe lincoln in a cage match with the vulcan version of ghandi against like, ghengis khan and space hitler would be a good idea. but it wasn't. i did like seeing the vulcan father of logic though like "im gonna go sacrifice myself for peace" ok king
9. i, mudd - all of the mudd episodes are bad. he's not charming at all whatsoever. however, this one is better than the other one because uhura gets to pretend to sell out kirk and they're SOOO cute about it. her little giggle when he PICKS HER UP BY HER SHOULDERS and tells her how proud he is. PLEEEEASE
8. charlie x - the entire premise of this episode is that the bad guy is just autistic. and then they make him live on a planet without people because he can't adjust to normal life ???
7. shore leave - obvious racism of this episode aside, the faux-irish jig that played while kirk was being menaced by his extremely unfunny old bully nearly drove me over the edge. we DO love a good mccoy death fakeout tho
6. a piece of the action - if i had any interest in gangster films before this it's all gone now. that being said. i loved when kirk drove the little car. he was so bad at it. he was so happy.
5. mudd's women - like he's literally just selling women?? and the plot twist is that secretly they're ugly?????
4. who mourns for adonias - this is just "what if ALIENS build the pyramids bro" except for the 1960s. nail in the coffin for this one was kirk proudly declaring they didn't needs gods - because they already had the One God, thank you very much!
3. the paradise syndrome - WHY WOULD YOU HAVE NATIVE AMERICANS MISTAKE KIRK FOR GOD. WHY. like i know why but Why. i think the very worst part of this episode was that it had an amnesia plot that would have FUCKED if you had simply removed the people. if there hadn't been people in this it would've been in my top 10 episodes. i think this broke me.
2. the omega glory - this is the same as the last episode except there's no amnesia, and also the "native americans" are white cosplayers who worship the american flag and mistake kirk for god because he can recite the pledge of allegiance yes really. if i had a nickel for every time this happened i'd only have two nickels etc etc at least kirk didn't knock anybody up in this one ig
1. patterns of force - why would you make your two jewish leads wear swastikas and then literally be whipped by nazis. i know he's such a bad person but not even william shatner deserves that. number one worst episode everyone says it's omega glory but it's this one
BEST EPISODES
10. plato's stepchildren - this episode is hard to rank because like it's both good and bad. the torture scenes were genuinely upsetting, especially the ones at the end w/ spock & nurse chapel, because they weren't just violence being inflicted on tied up guys, but they were SUPPOSED to be upsetting, like it was literally the point. and also this episode bears the distinction of THEEE kirk & uhura kiss. literally historic.
9. the trouble with tribbles - i feel like everyone's heard of this but it really is as good as everyone says. sometimes 1960s humor doesn't translate to 2020s humor but it was genuinely hysterical start to finish. also, the distinct trilling sound was so imprinted in my brain i recognized it in the 2009 movie where i had never registered it before.
8. the naked time - aside from the KING SHIT george takei pulled with the fencing this episode also contains the "i am in control of my emotions [sobbing]" moment and kirk & spock LITERALLY having a slapfight. this episode has everything. an absolute masterpiece
7. the empath - i feel like this paired with "the world is hollow and i have touched the sky" really made me a Bones Understander. i feel a little bad about that bc everyone says the characterizations in s3, or actually that the season as a whole, is kinda shaky? but i watched without knowing that and i feel like i Get It now. also, this was the only score i went and relistened to on spotify
6. tholian web - the spock & mccoy episode ever. there's so many things to say about this from the death fakeout to kirk's little space suit but what TRULY got me was the instant and totally nonverbal agreement to lie straight to kirk's face to both preserve personal dignity and troll the shit out of him (while chekov and sulu are like also silently laughing as they listen in no less). what this episode made me realize was that it's a good thing they argue all the time and make kirk play referee because if they were on the same side kirk wouldn't stand a chance. like he'd be finished.
5. the city on the edge of forever - ok, so, this episode made me feel like i was having a mental break. the time travel. spock's little hat. when he watches kirk kiss edith and then goes back into their room to pretend he didn't see anything. mccoy and kirk basically hugging at the end when edith bites it.
4. requiem for methuselah - the first time i watched this i was kinda like :/ because how does kirk fall in love with a woman in FOUR HOURS? that aside the ending scene blew my tits clean off. i paced around my house for like 30 minutes going "what the FUCK was that" because i couldn't simply lie down and sleep after seeing it. rewatching the episode with uh. new context made me like it a little better. but even if it had been garbage the last scene shook me so thoroughly it would still need to be on this list. i'm getting wound up just thinking about it. number one most shocking tos moment.
3. the dagger of the mind - look, i understand that this episode was technically just run-of-the-mill stuff as far as everybody else is concerned but they put james t kirk in a little brainwashing machine. and the machine was shaped like a chair. and it gives people amnesia sometimes. i don't know how i'm expected to behave normally
2. this side of paradise - this is the episode where a flower jizzes on spock and gives him feelings. and look: it's really funny, and there's a lot to love about it. but the ending where kirk hurls verbal abuse at spock for a solid 92 seconds WITHOUT STOPPING followed by: spock beating the shit out of him until he gets his logic back. i have rewatched this perhaps 1,000 times at minimum. what the fuck were they doing
1. conscience of the king - this episode got me into this mess. i don't think i can elaborate further without significant self-incrimination. let's just say what happened was i thought "oh i'll just watch this one tos episode for context for the fanfiction" and one month later i'm writing fic about [redacted] [redacted] [redacted] DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT
ok, that's my list. i thought about doing honorable mentions for episodes that had scenes i liked even though the overall episode didn't make it into my top 10. but then i realized that would mean recapping basically the entire series and this post is already too long. i do have to give the pon farr episode a shoutout though because even though so much of it was offputting there was literally a titty window in kirk's shirt. like, it's the pon farr episode. ok NOW i'm done
#personal#star trek blogging#i feel like if i hadn't wanted people to dox that fic i could've been blogging about this all along#in some ways it was more fun to keep a lid on it but i will miss having a record of my live first impressions that i can relive later......#hence a list. and also a spreadsheet but i just made it for me and cathy it would be incomprehensible to the general public#if anyone wants an ACTUAL skip/watch list for tos hit me up#i'll clean up the one i have to match the spn one lol#tos lb#liz's star trek stuff#liz's meta#kinda.
