Sara - that stern demeanor is falling apart with the most crestfallen face ever

Gorou - tries to save face with a “oh they must be a lucky one,” but his cracking voice is not doing any favors

Kokomi - calm, enigmatic and shrewd turns disastrous as you reveal to her

Heizou - completely chaotic and almost begging, “I could be better than them!”

Al Haitham - wise and intelligent? More like crushed and a not so convincing “I’m fine 😔”

Cyno -curt and stoic now turns into a hot mess of “where did I go wrong?”

Tighnari - be gentle with him or at least clarify fast because he has that sad look on his face like “wh-what?? Who is it?!”

Itto - “whoever they are, they must be really lucky to have you 😞 😔”, “it’s you, you goof”

Jean - withdraws into herself for a good while

Dottore - a maniacal “they will rue the day they harm you!!”

Pantalone - turns a bit yandere-ish as he tries to convince you he’s better

[I feel like Keqing has always been looked down upon just because she's a standard banner character, but man, she carried my 🍑 until AR45 - when I finally got Xiao on his release. Even still, I use her on tough challenges because I know she will never fail on having my back. Thank you, Keqing! And yay! C6!]

to be the yuheng of the qixing is to resign yourself to being near permanently busy, always with either a stack of papers or a pen in hand. and as keqing hurries to bu’yun, the usual password system forgotten for one of liyue’s most recognizable, she’s more than aware of this fact.

her foot taps on the stone platform bringing her up to the jade chamber, the journey never seeming to go quickly enough. the sun had set, and yet she still wasn’t finished. part of her wants to flip through the folder in her hand to get a start on her assignment, but the majority of her brain scolds her that she could drop some of the precious documents and have to wait for the journey all the way back down to collect them- and then all the way back up to continue her work.

to be the yuheng is to be busy, and keqing fit the definition to a T.

yet, when she steps onto the stone of the jade chamber, she pauses. a bright floating ball awaits her, one that doesn’t display any clear origin. it doesn’t seem mechanical or elemental, nor of adeptal origin…

she takes two quick steps and picks it from the air, surprised at the fragility of the structure. it breaks beneath her fingers, the pieces dissipating into fine dust even as she tries to hold it together. in the end, she’s left with an envelope in hand and a small box that had fallen thankfully into the space between her side and her folder.

keqing sighed, but picked up the box and walked inside, heading straight for her office.

she dropped off the folder with another secretary and shut her door, opening the letter swiftly. worst case, this was a security breach. best case…

whatever she had in mind for ‘best case’ was wrong.

she wasn’t one to kiss up to gods and was more than willing to point out their flaws, as critical of them as she was of humanity. and yet, she cannot find fault in your letter. she was there for you, and had watched you get a better handle on utilizing vessels as you guided the traveller through their journey. you had helped her, and she had done her best to reciprocate in kind.

and yet, as she opens your giftbox and tries one of the candies, she can’t help but feel like she got the better end of the deal. perhaps when her workload was lighter, she could work out a way to return your kindness.

After the idea floated around my mind for a while now, I decided to give a try to writing headcanons/short fics, specifically for Genshin Impact (with now a bit of Honkai Star Rail), with a particular focus on comfort/fluff.

I got inspired to do this after seeing how often I would turn to comfort or fluff content on tumblr, as a way to cope with the void of loneliness (sometimes overthinking too). As such, why not add my own contribution... as long as it can, hopefully, provide some relief to one person out there.

he didnt expect you to share the same feelings as him

it was your first time being at an art museum or at least being accompanied with someone. well, actually, it wasn’t really an art museum when really, its more like an art exhibit. albedo’s art exhibit.

even though, he is the host, he was walking around with you linked to his arm. “albedo? what’s this piece about?”

you pointed to a painting that were more abstract than the others. albedo’s fair complexion reddens a little, “it’s about me experiencing love for the first time.”

“really?” you said, tilting your head. he looked at the expression on your face, your face twisted into jealousy.no matter how you tried, albedo can read you just as easily as a book. “i envy that girl you loved to make that.” you tried to laugh it off but in your eyes, you didn’t find the joke to be funny.

albedo chuckled, which his laugh snapped your attention to him, peeling your eyes off of the piece. “what?”

“this piece was influenced by my love for you.”

“wait what?”

albedo watched how you experienced the stages of grief within ten minutes.

“OH.”

he laughed again as you tangled your fingers in his flax hair. “do you get it?”

GANYU

you two had been waiting for ganyu to have a day off to plan another date

usually your planned dates dont go so well so you try to make a spontaneous one and pray it works

surprisingly it does

as you two were already on a date, however when you saw an art museum, you knew you had to take your girlfriend there. today was unfortunately the only day ganyu had time off from work but you were ready to switch gears and make this date the best of all.

“yu! lets go here.” you said, pointing to an art museum. ganyu tilted her head, squinting at the sign.

“the… enchanted canvas?” she fiddled with the ends of her dress.

you confirmed, “yes!” glancing at her face, you reassured her, “i know what youre thinking but dont worry about the costs! i got you,”

you showed her your wallet, packed jammed with money. too much money but she cant stop you from buying for her or not allowing her to pay.

“okay!” the both of you entered, seeing the rows of pieces around the walls. the glass cases of different arts from all over the world.

due to the different aesthetics you both have, naturally, you both separated. you came across a painting that was blue, actually, different variations of blue. the artist used golden accents to highlight the plant they chose to use in the painting. hydrangeas. these colors and especially the flower reminds you of ganyu.

“yuyu!” you said, hoping she caught your voice. behind you, you heard familiar clacks of heels. “hm?”

“this painting reminds me of you.” you pointed to the large canvas framed in gold. ganyu chuckled, “thank you, sweetheart. ive seen one that reminds me of you too.”

“yu, do you think i can buy this for you?”

“name, with both of our savings combined, i dont think we can buy this.” she joked, but really was trying to convince you not to buy the painting.

keqing had been admiring you for far too long and realized that the feelings she thought was platonic were actually romantic

on todays hang out you both have topics to share

“keqing, where do you wanna go for today’s daily debrief?” you asked. the both of you met up at a local cafe and usually on every friday, you both talk about whats happening in your life. but keqing noticed that you have been flaking every other friday making her concerned for you, which is why she called a debrief on a thursday instead. “let’s go to the art museum. the one reel you sent on instagram.”

“oooh! ive been wanting to go to the glided gallery.” you replied in excitement. keqing nodded as she pulled out her phone,

“its a 5 minute walk from here. lets go.”

“oh! thank you. so what did you want to talk about keqing?”

keqing winced, she had forgotten the reason why she invited you in the first place. other than asking you why you flaked out, she likes you. as in, likes-likes you.

“i was going to ask why did you flake out on the last meeting, n/n.”

“oh!” you said, flustered a little. “thats because ive been talking to this guy-”

keqing’s heart and brain fought between confessing to you and not telling you. its a cycle she goes through, laying on her bed to everyday thought. she was going to confess but after hearing you have another boyfriend. she decided against it, bringing this secret to the death bed.

“oh. no, i just wanted to show you how this painting is really cute.”

“youre right, it is.” you were mesmerized by the painting hung on the wall, you couldnt see that keqing was just as enchanted just by looking at you.

when you found out keqing is secretly into rex lapis paraphernalia, you fought the urge to laugh. but that was then. now…you find yourself with a limited edition rex lapis plush. you couldn’t help it - it’s just so adorable you’d spend all your savings on it! fortunately though, you didn’t have to do that

though you then realize that you do not know how keqing would react to you having such a thing. would she be jealous? would she want it for herself? either way, you obviously need to find out her opinion on the plush for…reasons. you totally don’t just want to see her reaction towards you having limited edition geo archon merchandise

so you waltz to your shared home casually with the plush in your arms, you hugging it so tightly that you might squeeze out its stuffing. with a big smile on your face and a catchy hum on your lips, you enter your humble abode

keqing is, unsurprisingly, working in the living room (although you have a study room - you guess that she was simply waiting for you to come home) and she looks up once she hears your footsteps nearing her. she greets you happily but the moment she lays her eyes on the plush, her eyes widen

“i-is that what i think it is?”

you smirk as you nod vigorously in response. she folds her arms and shuts her eyes, assuming a pondering pose. you await her remark excitedly and for your chance to flex your little limited edition plush-

you feel your heart sink. then again, you should’ve expected this considering she is the biggest rex lapis fan you know but you suppose you clung onto that small sliver of hope a little too much. you try to reason that you bought it for yourself instead of it being a gift for her and she only snickers in agreement

she pats your back supportively as you sulk on the couch beside her and insists that hey, two is better than one after all; now you have your own and you two don’t have to share! though this does not help with relieving any of your shame but it’s the thought that counts

the next day, you see her hugging both of your plushies. she tells you not to say a word - not to her and not to anybody else. knowing her, you do exactly as she says.

zhongli

oh, now you’ve done it. this is the peak of embarrassment for you; here you are, living with the ex-geo archon himself, and yet…a rex lapis plush with the softest fur you could ever imagine is sitting in your hands. it stares at you cutely with his shut eyes, fast asleep in his own dreamland. how could you ever resist such an adorable little thing?

even then, you decide that you are not going to let him see you with the dragon-and-mini-him. you worry that he may be roaming the very streets you are walking through right now so you rush home, determined to keep this your “dirty'' little secret

the moment you step into your house, you relax and start making your way to your room to stash your little dragon away somewhere safe. where would work, you begin to wonder. would under the bed work? or should you hide him in your personal dresser? or even-

thankfully enough, he seems to not question it much. you don’t know why you were so worried; zhongli is quite literally one of the most open-minded people you’ve met. and that’s saying something for someone who has lived for centuries. so you breathe out a sigh of relief. until zhongli continues-

“although, if you simply wanted to hug rex lapis, you could’ve merely asked me. i would’ve been happy to oblige. i still am, if i were to be completely honest.”

you’ve had enough. you sink onto the ground out of embarrassment, your knees growing weak under his unintentional tease. he grows concerned and kneels down in front of you to check if you’re okay. and quite frankly, you are not

the plush now sits in your room (“your” as in either your individual room or shared room with him) and when he is ever in the mood to tease you, he will bring up the incident. he knows it always brings a blush to your cheeks.

you and keqing didn’t see eye to eye on things often. So it always results in you two mildly disliking each other,, but that slowly changes when time passes by.

You weren’t from liyue. You and your family simply moved in from sumeru. You weren’t young when you moved, it was actually pretty recent, it was only a year ago. Therefore you knew almost nothing about liyue and it’s god.

Ever since you met keqing, you already knew you and keqing wouldn’t get along easily.

You were a little lazy when it comes to work. You mostly get too distracted by something, and forget about work. So you mostly, don’t do your work on time. And Keqing didn’t enjoy that, obviously. She always insisted you do your work before it’s too late. She was right, but you didn’t really listen to her.

”Y/N! please do your work, before it’s too late.” she told you while holding a pile of paper in her hands. “Oh fine,, I’ll do it.” You get back in position and you continue writing your work. “good.” She walks away.

“Keqing’s,, a bit annoying.” You thought while writing. “It would be better if she didn’t tell me to do my work,,but, if she didn’t my papers wouldve been overdue by now.” you thought to yourself again.

after a few hours of doing work things

“Hng—“ you stretch your arms up “At last, work is done” you said in relief.    That was a few years ago. You had gotten used to your kind of business and there hasn’t been a challenge or protest since that fight, fearful that they would wind up with the same fate. You didn't blame them. After all, if lighting were to strike you, you knew that you would survive.

   You were currently doing business with the Fatui and the Northland Bank. They wanted to expand their name into Liyue, and you happen to own the apartment they wanted to open in. Though technically, it wasn’t yours. It belonged to a past client, who lost it in a gamble. However, you were beginning to grow bored of these endless meetings.

   “I’d be more than happy to welcome the bank under my name,” you said with a cheery whistle that was too friendly to be welcoming. “However, this won’t come for free, ya know.”

   “Of course! That is to be expected!” replied the harbinger in front of you.

   You recognized him immediately when you first met. He had requested an audience with you when your assistant was working one day and you were off the clock. Though you haven't played the game for years, you could still recognize those who were playable almost instantly. The tall man in front of you was none other than Tartaglia himself. His bright auburn hair was very noticeable to you. You knew that you needed to accept this, otherwise, there’d be an issue in the game’s storyline. You pondered on that for a bit. Could you possibly alter the story in some way? What would happen if you did so? Would the traveler's fate change? You pushed the thoughts aside for now. Even if you were lucky, you refused to gamble with that possibility.

   You’ve lived in this world for quite a while now. This was practically your life. You snapped your fingers for your assistant. 

   “Lingxin, a cigarette please.”

   The young woman to your right did as she was told. Her light brown hair was pale, almost blonde, and was tied in a loose bun that stayed on one side while the other covered a part of her porcelain face. Her eyes were dark brown and framed by a monocle that was clipped to her clothes. The clothing she wore was professional yet formal, trimmed with golden fabric. It was a uniform that you made when you were a teen so you could differentiate the gang members and their ranks. 

   Despite her dress, you knew she kept a hidden weapon with her at all times. She was dancing a dangerous tango by being in your affairs. You warned her of such when she first applied to be your assistant, yet that was a trait that you respected about her. She must've been the only person who got to be in your personal space and be confident.

   The woman pulled out a cigarette from seemingly nowhere and placed it between your held-out fingers. Without even looking, you heard the flicker of a lighter and another click when it closed. You brought the freshly lit roll to your mouth and deeply inhaled. You sighed out, slowly opening your eyes to look at the young war bringer in front of you, who seemed in deep concentration by your own simple actions. There were two times when you smoked; during meetings and during gambles.

   “Well, Mr. Tartaglia, it seems you and I will need to come to an agreement,” you said. “Because of your… military background, I’ll need to up the pricing for quite a bit. Surely, a man of your caliber can handle the raise.”

   He nodded without a second thought. “I wouldn’t mind that at all! However, you’ll have to ask a colleague before we make any finalities.” 

   You tried your best to remember who he was referring to. Was it Zhongli or Signora? Either way, you kept your on the poised facade in front of Childe.

   “Then what use was this meeting?” you hissed with a sudden impatience. “Consider this warning, Tartaglia. Waste my time again, and even the Tsaritsa won't save you.”

   The drop of formality was a surprise but it still stirred something within the ginger. He was speechless. Your glare caught him off-guard and for once, he wasn't sure what to do.

   “As you wish,” he finally said with a deep breath.

   You took in another puff but with less patience. “Boss,” you breathed out. “You call me, ‘Boss.’ Nothing more, nothing less, Tartaglia. You'll be working under my roof, which makes me your boss. Got it?”

   “As you wish, Boss.” Childe seemed to be one nerve away from a complete overload yet you brushed it off.

   You chuckled and relaxed in your seat at his response. You could've sworn you saw his breath hitch. “Good job,” you praised before turning to your assistant. “Lingxin, give me the time.”

   “Your scheduled lunch break is within ten minutes,” she informed as she glanced over at you from her pocket watch. “Your usual meal will be ready in a few minutes in the cafeteria.”

   You thanked her and everyone else for their time before standing up, adjusting your clothes, and then walking out the doors with pride. You put aside the excited gleam in Childe’s eyes. Knowing his true nature behind that friendly attitude, you were wise enough to keep him on his toes and keep him away at arm's length. You passed by the kitchen of your headquarters to pick up your lunch from the chef and then left to eat it elsewhere.

   If you were being honest, your favorite time of the day was your mealtimes. It was the only time when you could be left alone without expectations, and although you could adjust your schedule to have more free time, you knew that would make you neglectful of your responsibilities. Besides, you could only take so much isolation before feeling a heavy loneliness settle inside.

   At the moment, you were going down to the docks where you could feed the fish. It was the reason why you had bread crumbs mixed in with your lunch bag. As you threw out the crumbs, you felt something move in your jacket, tickling you with its scampering and fur.

   “Heh. Violet, please,” you muttered quietly. “You’re gonna make��me laugh.”

   A purple weasel popped out of your sleeve and clung to your wrist as she reached out to the piece of bread you were holding. Violet was a Bluethunder weasel you had adopted from a trip down in the Chasm. She was a hungry girl and hasn’t left your side since you gave her some food that one time. Rather than sending her back to where she came from, you've kept her with you. She was your little lucky charm.

   You spent the next half hour simply watching the fish and eating your food. There was something oddly mesmerizing when watching animals eat and it put your mind at ease to be caring for something. That’s when you heard footsteps run towards you from across the start of the docks. The clumsy treading of boots could be heard from the creaky wooden planks and they leaned against the post to pant for air. You knew who it was and what they were here for, yet you remained still as you kept your eyes on Violet, watching her nibble on a piece of fish you had just given her.

   “What seems to be so urgent that you needed to interrupt feeding time, Haijun?” you coldly asked.

   After your question, you heard him suddenly straighten up, standing firmly with his hands to his sides like a soldier.

   “W-We were having difficulties labeling the cargo for the next shipment, B-Boss,” he stammered. "None of our officers were near so we... h-had to call for you."

   Before he could get another word in, you interrupted him by putting one hand up slowly. “Does this happen to be involving the shipment of herbs that need to go to the pharmacy and the farm, Haijun?”

   “…Y-Yes, Boss. We can’t figure out which ones are for the farms and which ones go to Bubu.”

   You put the hand down and pinched the bridge of your nose out of annoyance. “Tell your crew that I’ll be there eventually. I swear to the archons if this is a waste of my time, I’ll have you thrown to the Geovishap.”

   Although you have yet to actually do such a thing, you did hold a man above the cave. You had to leave an impression on your underlings after all.

   “T-This isn’t like last time, Boss! Our labels were mixed up at the farms and we need you to sort it out,” he reasoned.

   You opened your jacket to let Violet into your pocket and got up. You carried yourself with a dignified posture as you walked past the grunt, who stayed behind you out of both fear and respect.

   You passed by the workmen without sparing a glance. You spent your lunch breaks at the docks and they’d often see you. However, they never bothered you because of your reputation. As you were about to go past the usual food vendors, you heard a panicked cry and someone coughing frantically. You turned your head to the source as soon as you heard people starting to grow louder with worry.

   The crowd began to surround something but it still parted as you approached as if your aura alone carried a heaviness that anyone could feel. A child was choking on some food and his mother kept trying to hit his back, trying to get whatever was out of his airway. You had a poker face on as you analyzed the situation before deciding on what to do.

   “Haijun, go find a physician or someone in the medical,” you ordered. “Specifically for children if you can.”

   Hu Tao was going around door-to-door as usual, trying to promote her business. However, the growing crowd in the food market is what drew her attention.

   She tried to squeeze past the bystanders, only to be pushed back with a stumble. But then she heard some people scream, calling out for the Millelith as someone was doing… something. She could hardly see because of these people...

   “Someone get the guards!” a woman shouted. “They’re going to drown my son!”

   “Shut the fuck up! I’m not!” another voice argued. "Just let me do my thing, woman!"

   The mob of people started to disperse from the scene, though a few still lingered. At the canals, Hu Tao managed to see that there were two people in the canals. Both of them were drenched with water but the one in formal clothes was holding onto someone else. A young child, to be specific, and he was being held by the shoulders to be shoved into the waters, struggling to stay conscious. The woman who shouted for the guards was most likely the mother.

   That’s when the director realized who was keeping the child underwater. The notorious leader of the Fukahire Gang? Was this personal business? Though she had never seen them in person, she had heard rumors of their questionable motives.

   “Step aside! Everyone keep away!”

   As if on cue, the gang had shown up, pushing people away from the three. However, Hu Tao managed to stay to the side and continue to watch what was going on.

   “We came as soon as we can, Boss!”

   You were not drowning this lady’s son. You struggled to get the lady off you as you dunked the boy’s head into the canal. The water was cold and you guessed that the kid was barely five. The Heimlich maneuver wouldn’t work because he was too small and he was clearly too old to try hitting him on the back.

   You continued to keep his head down under the cold canal water. Hoshi has taught you this thing. The Diving Reflex. The younger the person, the more likely it would react. The colder the water, then the better it would work. Sure, you were getting your clothes wet in the process, but you were saving this kid’s life. You were doing whatever was best in the moment, relying completely on your instincts.

   The chances of this working were slim but you were willing to take it.

   When your underlings came back, you had pulled him up from the water, shoving the lady off you in the process, and ordered them on what to do. The boy’s mother was still sitting in the water, confused by what you were doing.

   “His airway is obstructed.” You were about to hand the unconscious child to one of them. “Remove it via forceps.”

   “We brought a med kit, Boss!” 

   You perked up at this. “Ah. Well, I'll lay him on the nearest table and keep track of his pulse as I take it out.”

   You worked fast, rolling up your sleeves and turning to the mother. You grabbed the forceps and ordered your men to keep people away. You closed your eyes as you tried to locate the thing choking him. It didn’t take long to take out the dumpling he was previously blocking his throat with the forceps. Once you were done, you went back to the frantic mother, who kept looking over your shoulder.

   “He’s fine now, but take him for an emergency checkup.” You handed her a business card. “Just hand that to whoever at the pharmacy and they’ll help you right away.”

   “W-Wait what?” she mumbled as she took it. Then she looked back down at her son, who was now breathing perfectly fine despite being in wet clothes. “B-But you were just drowning him!”

   You scowled and shot her a glare to promptly shut her up. She would’ve froze on the spot if you didn’t order her to move. You pushed past everyone before the Millelith showed up, leaving the scene of what just went down. You felt Violet scamper up to sniff your damp chin. Her purple and cream fur was all ruffled from the recent water fight.

   “Yes, I know. I’ll get you somewhere warm.”

   The next day, you had decided to make your lunch break longer. Your assistant didn’t mind as she understood that what happened made you a bit peeved. Although you stayed calm on the outside, you were screaming internally. What you just did may or may not drastically change things. Were you supposed to let that kid choke like it was nothing? You drew so much attention but you had taught yourself that the gang leader was supposed to be elusive and mysterious. 

   Violet squeaked as she scurried to sit on your shoulder, leaning over to sniff your face. Her whiskers tickled your cheeks and you couldn’t help but giggle at how they danced over your skin.

   “What kind of weasel is that?” 

   Your heart suddenly fell and you clicked your tongue, telling your weasel friend to go back into your pocket. You took a second to compose yourself.

   “Ms. Hu, what an unusual question,” you said rather calmly. “What are you doing here?”

   “Ohoho! You aren’t getting away that easily. So you’re the leader of that gang that’s been lingering around the harbor?” She plopped herself right next to you, swaying her legs above the water. “Also, don’t call me that. You make me sound like an old lady.”

   Hu Tao leaned over to get a better look at you. You didn’t move or pull away, keeping calm and tossing more crumbs into the water for the fish. She watched the various colorful fish pop out to the surface like a child in amazement. You couldn’t hide the little twitch of your mouth from quirking up, a small smile that was barely noticeable. One glance at the funeral director told you that she was trustworthy.

   “Did you need something from me, Hu Tao?” you repeated as you pulled out a bit of chicken from your lunch bag. This time you handed it to Violet, letting her pop her little head out from your jacket.

   The brunette giggled as she saw your weasel friend. “So my eyes weren’t playing tricks on me! You really did pop out a purple weasel! Who would’ve thought that a tough gang leader like you would have been a softie to animals?”

   You scoffed and rolled your eyes. “I’m not heartless, Tao. I’ll toss some bread to some and spare some Mora to others…”

   “And you’ll steal potential clients from my parlor?” she hummed. She turned to you, drifting away from Violet. “Why did you keep that boy in the water? Were you trying to drown him for a bit or do you like toying with life?”

   That last part of the question was dripping with a hidden disdain so you knew not to choose the latter. You bought some time by handing over another chunk of meat to Violet. The weasel moved to sit on your lap. “It’s called the Diving Reflex,” you stated. “You keep your nose and face under water while holding your breath. It’s a psychological response that prioritizes oxygen to vital organs and regulates that heart rate. The kid’s alive now but it isn’t something that’s reliable. Any option to save him was risky. But, I was able to buy time till I could get help with the method.”

   “His chances for living were slim either way, you say?” 

   You nodded. His chances of any sort of survival were low, yet you managed to beat those odds through a mere gamble.

   Hu Tao squinted her scarlet eyes as if she was trying to get a read on you. “Hmm. You really are something!”

   You rolled your eyes once more. “I’m not a heartless asshole, Hu Tao. I wasn’t going to turn a blind eye to someone possibly dying. I get that people see me that way because I gamble with my business and I don’t care.”

   The two of you sat together in peace before she suddenly asked you yet another question.

   “So what happened to yesterday’s suit? Did you throw it out?” she joked.

   You clicked your tongue and frowned. “Don’t be ridiculous. I would never waste such an expensive suit. I merely donated it after cleaning it…”

   The last part caught her off-guard so she questioned you about it, which proceeded for you to explain how you worked. You didn’t give her crucial details but you told her enough to keep her interested. Rather than getting rid of old clothes via disposal, you donated them to charity. Of course, you had your friendlier underling do it because who in Liyue would accept any sort of gift from you. Either way, you were done with it.

   When you explained this to her, you noticed that the director somewhat relaxed around you, almost softening up. But you did have to leave eventually.

   You whistled for Violet to hop back into your pocket. She licked her paws for a bit before scampering to her spot. You left Hu Tao at the end of the docks without saying anything, but as you were going to walk away, you stopped. You didn’t know much about her as a person or character, despite being playable, but you did know that she was supposed to be a cheery and mischievous person, despite her unpopularity with the natives. Now that you thought about it, it was always hard to escape rumors. Maybe that’s why you had such a mixed background… and why you felt a kinship with her.

   “You are welcome to sit with me again tomorrow,” you hesitantly offered. “I don’t mind your company.”

   And that’s how you made a friend. Hu Tao would show up on your lunch break during the next few days, idly striking up conversations that usually started if you made her any new clients or lost her some, or asking if you could pop the weasel, to which then you’d let your weasel friend climb out for her own feeding time. The two got along quickly.

   Her dark humor and corny puns never failed to make you smile. Though you hardly ever laughed, she seemed fine with it. You didn't wanna completely let your guard down. But you did find your sudden friendship rather heartwarming.

   However, while you viewed your interactions as platonic, Hu Tao didn't. Her infatuation grew fast. It started out as a little ember, a very subtle warmth with you but clearly visible if you were gone. She thought that she could ignore it for a bit to simply enjoy her time together with you. After all, both of you were social outcasts so making a friend was hard, though for different reasons on each end. People didn't enjoy her pranks and she would bother the locals for certain deals for her parlor. As for you, the locals were quite honestly afraid of you and your reputation alone. Although some didn't seem to mind, most of them did and would deliberately go some other direction just to avoid your path. Yet Hu Tao couldn't care less merely because you tolerated her and her antics.

   "Seriously, the last person from yesterday didn't even open his door!" she whined as she leaned her back against yours. 

   You handed her an entire piece of bread. "Hm. Would you like me to turn him into one of your clients?" 

   Hu Tao swung herself around to sit next to you, not noticing a dark shadow move from under the docks. You picked up on it immediately but didn't warn her. She giggled at your dry joke. "Nah. Then that would be too many clients for us! And although I wanna advertise my business," she was speaking with her hands, moving the one with bread around above the water, "I don't need that many custo-!"

   Just as you were expecting, a fish had decided to be bold and jump up to get the food from Hu Tao's hand directly. She nearly shrieked from it but the fish had managed to pull her into the water with its weight. The two managed to splash water on you as they went diving in. The sudden look of surprise on her face was what got you to smile clearly. When she came gasping up to the surface for air, her hat was heavy, soaked with water and making it off on her head. You urgently helped her back up, keeping your gleeful expression. But as you stood beside each other, you looked closely at her. She was completely drenched. Her hat drooped on her as she tried to fix it, and that's what made the dam burst. The sight of her hat dipping on the corner of her head and the way her twintails sadly hung behind her.

   You couldn't stop yourself from laughing at what just happened. The memory replayed in your mind. You were finally completely comfortable around her and your contagious joy came to you with ease, no longer caring about the things around you. That burst of unrestrained laughter was the final nail in the coffin that made Hu Tao realize that she was absolutely whipped for you. Her heart practically fluttered at the sight of your giddy grin. Thank the archons you were too busy laughing to notice her hiding her flustered flush.
