遂にスタッドレスに履き替えました。実家が長野なのと、娘達と冬スキーや温泉に行きたいといった要望からです。昨年は、吹雪の中 草津へオールテレーンタイヤのまま行ったことはあるんですが、雪道だったので全然大丈夫でしたが、路面凍結していたらちょっとヤバかっただ��うと思います。

さて、レストア車 購入当初から履いていた、BF Goodrich グッドリッチ ALL-Terrain T/A KO2 33x10.50R15LT 114R を、Dunlop ダンロップ GRANDTREK SJ5 235/80R16 にしました。ホイールはこの時期いいやつは全部売り切れだったので、仕方なく残り物の Weds KEELER TACTICS キーラータクティクス 16x7.0J +5 139.7/6H の HYPER SILVER です。KSファクトリーからは、本当はオフセット -5がいいと言われていたんですが、+5でも大丈夫らしいです。ただ、前輪だけ干渉ギリギリだったらしく、スペーサーを入れてもらいました。 ホイールは16インチにアップしてますが、タイヤサイズとしては少し小さくなってます。少し車高も低くなりましたが、ノーマルに近い大きさに戻ったという感じで、結果、見た目は違和感ないですね。コーナーでのハンドリングが���なり軽くなったのはGoodです。しかしながら、ホイール、本当は JIMLINE TYPE2 が良かったんですがタッチの差で売り切れました orz。 でも GRANDTREK SJ5 も履いてみればなかなか無骨でいい感じですね。安いし。シルバーにしたのは正解でした。ブラックだとちょっと旧車感がないのでこっちの方が好みです。78プラドはロクマルと違って少し近代感が色濃いので、何気にわざわざコーナーランプを古い純正に変えたり、錆びやすいルーフラック付けたりと色々工夫して意図的に古臭くしてます。本当はウインドウシェードというか雨除けも無い方がかっこいいんだけど、こればかりは家族が重宝しているので取れませんねぇ。タイプ3の時はシェードもアルミでカッコよかったんですがね！

I continue to be salty and complain about bad writing! Honestly if BL had done a sane publishing schedule and had ONE SINGULAR PERSON write the opening trilogy, I would have much less to complain about, but here we are! The moral of the story is treat your writers properly, crunch time bad.

great plan, Horus, great plan Angron and everyone else have been tied down here for way longer than expected so they talk tactics for a bit try to predict what the enemy will do next and they hope they can hold out long enough for garro to get the word out they haven't linked up with the remaining loyalist death guard, but they're still out there those guys are hard to kill lol so it's been a few months at least they're also starting to run low on food i'd expect water would be a real concern in this situation

Ralph Huntley, mixed Yurok and Scottish. This photo was taken in direct sunlight next to his white wife Henrietta and you can observe with your eyes how much darker he was even while mixed. His father was brown enough to lie and say he was Mexican because it was safer for him to be seen as Mexican than as a Yurok man. Due to the terror and racism of being seen as Yurok I am honestly not sure if his father ever actually talked to him about how they were not Mexican and in fact from Northern California, but regardless Ralph is listed as white on census reports and on his draft card. White with a "ruddy" skin tone.

The shit that I've seen on census reports has been frustrating to no end. While casually trawling some of the earlier ones in Humboldt county page by page, you know what I saw when I got to the pages that were the communities largely comprised of Chinese immigrants?

Not a single name, sex, or age was listed accurately. The census taker instead wrote down a term I'm not going to repeat here and then just essentially went " " down the whole page. Is it much of a stretch to imagine the census takers being a little dishonest now and then? Is it a stretch to imagine a child adopted out of her community into a while family in Massachusetts, knowing nothing, would be listed as white when she has no other information available to her?

None of us know what is going to come out in this CBC report but at the end of the day the Piapot Cree still claim Buffy and this is only going to cause further harm.

Whatever comes out in this program is going to be a hot topic conversation for a while but it's only going to serve at silencing other people who are struggling to repair their broken connections. Tribal nations are going to be even more wary about people who have legitimate claims. Everything is already broken so why the fuck are we breaking it even more?

EDIT: I've seen the broadcast. Not at all surprised that Keeler and Tallbear were in it, and I'm also really annoyed that Talliet specifies online she's a niece of Riel but the stupid fucking broadcasters says she's a descendant. Louis Riel has no direct descendants. You put in all this time and effort into poking through someone else's history and trauma and don't even catch that in the final edit before you start the show? My original point here still stands because it is exactly people like Keeler that pull these tactics without digging into the historical context of why our ancestors would have been identified the way they are in reports.

Break Me—Write an angsty drabble. [Kirk/Spock, TOS—pre relationship, City on the Edge of Forever]

The furnace burned out hours ago, and Spock was shivering in their apartment—the flop, as Jim had called it— as he sat and worked with a surgical precision on the transistor panels of the crude motherboard that was laying across the second bed.  

Spock’s eyes didn’t raise to the door as he heard it open, Full footsteps entered the room, along with the cloying smell of feminine perfume mingled with pine and musk.  He didn’t need to ask to know where Kirk had been.  

Kirk froze in the doorway.  “I didn’t think you’d be awake.”

“We have an unknown deadline that draws closer the longer we remain in this century.  If we do not find the singularity—“ he tried to keep his shuddering to a minimum.  

“If you’re going to try and burn the midnight oil, you might actually want to burn something.”  Kirk’s footfalls grew closer as he made his way to the furnace, grabbing a log and tossing it into their wood-stove “It’s chilly in here.”

“We must conserve resources.”

He huffed as he lit the furnace, his face in a raptures, golden glow that glinted off his eyes as they turned to look at him.  “Spock, if I have to drag you half-frozen to a hospital in the middle of Earth’s 20th century, I think we’d be looking at bigger problems than resource conservation.  Besides, I’m sure Edith would be more than willing to lend us some supplies if it meant not freezing for the night.”  His features softened in the fire.  Spock had never recalled a time he’d seen him so relaxed.  A Vulcan should have felt nothing.  A friend should have been grateful.  Neither described the twist in his abdomen as he moved on to the next coupling of wires on his board.  “I’d make it up to her.”

“What if Doctor McCoy arrives tomorrow?”

“I’ll deal with that tomorrow, then.”

“She cannot take precedence over the ship, Jim.”

“I don’t need you to remind me of my priorities!” 

 “I would not if I saw no reason—“  A shudder ripped through him in violent waves against his spine, and by the wide eyed shock in Kirk’s face, he hadn’t succeeded in concealing this one.  

Warm hands that smelled like her brushed against his cheek.   “You’re freezing.”  

There were a dozen things Spock should have said as Kirk pulled him away from his work and led him towards the bed.  A hundred more when Kirk began pulling off their clothes, bundling them together beneath the blankets as any man trained in survival would.  A thousand as he felt skin, heat, and a heart that didn’t beat for him radiating against his back.  And against all logic, he sank against arms that weren’t meant to hold him and felt that voice he’d follow anywhere drone against him as the room filled with idle chatter about survival tactics and 20th century economics and Edith Keeler—

And for the first time since they had arrived in this archaic century, Spock could understand why Kirk wanted to hold onto an illusion a little longer.

Preventing Movements from Being Overlooked in the Age of Activism

Contemporary social movements have a higher chance of fading into the background now more than ever. Benjamin Sáenz, a professor at the University of Texas at El Paso, says “There is no [Chicano] movement per se. That doesn’t mean there is nothing happening” (Guerrero, 61). This holds true for many modern-day movements where people have the Internet to aid in spreading information faster than traditional methods. It’s easy to be forgotten when activists can be branded far-left SJWs (social justice warriors) as a tactic to ignore the message. The racists that many of today’s movements are fighting against can have entire pages taken down after false reports of hate speech. In a country founded on the beliefs of the white, Christian majority we often see the issues that stick are what these people are in direct opposition with – black vs white, gay vs straight, rich vs poor, Christian vs savage. Movements like Black Lives Matter see huge success because they are right – there’s an issue that needs to be addressed – but also because this country thrives on the continued white against black narrative that raises white inhabitants higher on their pedestals. While all social movements of the future have to worry about whether the public regards their goals as positive or negative, it is especially the movements of smaller groups that are vulnerable to being left behind. In addition to the fading of news that inevitably happens with a 24-hour global news cycle, active erasure now occurs with a few clicks.

Because I am not Black, Mexican, or Asian it isn’t my place to speak on the movements of those groups beyond observations of them. I can, however, speak to the many movements of my people. Okla Chahta ohoyo hapia hoke. I am a proud woman from the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. All through school I had teachers ask me if I knew that Native Americans made up just 1-2% of the entire United States population. It was hurtful to always be stared at as if I belonged in some sort of museum, and pushed me to look deeper into the needs of Indian Country as a whole. Issues my tribe doesn’t face, others do; and where there is trouble, there is generally a movement to change the cause for a better outcome. Since the very first colony settled on these lands in 1492, Indigenous peoples have been at risk for becoming one of these aforementioned forgotten groups.

Diminishing the power of those who make up today’s 566+ federally recognized tribes was the goal from day one and that’s obvious when you look at our numbers in the broad population. Even so, this has not stopped the fires burning among us. Every day we fight for a different facet of the erasure and oppression we face: Standing Rock, Bears Ears, Mauna Kea, Native mascots, tribal sovereignty, missing and murdered Indigenous women. The goal is to start these movements and prevent them from disappearing before anything can be accomplished. But how can we ensure that when even movements like that of Colin Kaepernick – who had the attention and support of millions of football fans – can be warped and forced out of the spotlight?

Journalist Jacqueline Keeler, of Navajo and Dakota decent, spoke briefly with me on the issue of staying relevant and being heard. Much of her beliefs appear to lie in the idea that our strength manifests in numbers.

I think that it’s not going to be easy and this is not the natural course of things. The exertion of sovereignty [and] something which I really advocate for: an Indigenous tribal government. I think that we need to organize politically because we’re talking about political rights, you know? Our safety, our security, our identity is only going to be protected politically. All of this is permeable as long as we are not politically strong, so we need to strengthen ourselves politically. Obviously we are talking about several hundred different nations, but we are stronger together and we have more at stake in common than we do apart.

Strengthening ourselves politically is an important idea to consider because tribal sovereignty is already ignored in day to day life. We need leaders who aren’t afraid to assert their power, and from there we need to work together to get our best into the U.S. government. Politics are at a turning point where things will either improve for those experiencing injustice or history will repeat itself.

National headlines detailing Standing Rock Reservation and the protection of sacred sites that were desecrated for the Dakota Access Pipeline proves that this idea of strength in unification is on the right track. Standing Rock is shared by Yanktonai Dakota, Hunkpapa Lakota, and Sihasapa Lakota. People from these tribes united and rallied for help in protecting their lands and burial grounds that were being threatened. Tribe after tribe sent letters of support and representatives to aid in the work that was happening up north. I sent packages of supplies to the very first wave of protectors in April 2016 while urging my tribal leaders to pen their support and send help. I observed Linda Black Elk, of the Standing Rock Sioux, use her background in Ethnobotany as an EMT for the protectors. I watched as needed roles were filled and veterans showed up to stand on the front lines following Trump’s executive order that reversed Obama’s protections. Although the pipeline has been completed, the events at Standing Rock are an inspiring example of strength in numbers. If we can come together and turn the public’s attention to the injustices we face, we can come together and work from inside the corrupt system that holds us down.

A Lakota youth advocate, Megan Red Shirt-Shaw, has worked admissions at multiple universities and is using her experience to work on a project designed to connect Natives pursuing their Ph.D. with mentors in their desired field. This came to mind when reading about Sáenz and Guerrero discussing how “Many of the young leaders of yesterday went to school and are now our doctors, lawyers, educators, and writers” (Guerrero, 61). If wielding our collective power to change societal tradition is key to the social movements of the future, avenues to and participation in academia is necessary. Education will be the foot in the door for minorities in politics; without which nothing will change about the lack of diversity in our representatives. The statistics for politicians in the United States proves that the diversity of the country is not reflected. In 2015 I read a Washington Post article titled “The new Congress is 80 percent white, 80 percent male and 92 percent Christian” that went on to detail the exact numbers of the 114th Congress. This country is not in a crisis where our population of women is severely lacking in numbers, so why is it that our government doesn’t more accurately reflect the diversity of the current population? Activism taking center stage in conversations across these lands means more youth are likely to actively pursue higher education and get involved in politics. As these numbers rise there is higher potential for the government to accurately represent this nation’s inhabitants.

By working together toward the ultimate power of representation we will eventually be able to reinvent the foundation of this country without a radical anarchy. And that’s how it should be done – slowly and with enough thought that everyone can benefit – otherwise we run the risk of someone being left out or these lands being damaged further. “Critics will rightly contend that co-management is not an ideal status for tribes. We are indigenous to the land and by right should have complete authority. But the political reality is that we don’t” (Curley, 72). I don’t believe there is a need to speak of something as severe as overthrowing and abolishing the government while minorities are at such a clear disadvantage. Though a nice fantasy to dwell in, a slow trickle into spaces that don’t currently have their doors open to us will be much easier.

While it is less than ideal to have to work so much harder than those currently in power just for the chance to enter their stadium, it’s worth it when we look at the cause. The root of any social movement examined corresponds with lack of power and that’s why we must focus on taking back said power and distributing it where deserved. Without that we will only see movements grow silent and fade out like the Chicano movement and the water protectors at Standing Rock. Movements visible to those who are involved, but otherwise unseen. We can choose to let the media pit us against other movements, break us from the inside, and turn onlookers against us or we can cease to feed that monster and focus on feeding ourselves. The majority will look away when comfortable and it is in those moments that we can choose to stay down where they want us or build up.

New story in Politics from Time: A ‘Tentative’ Agreement With China in Place, Trump Suspends Plans for Tariff Hike on Chinese Imports

(WASHINGTON) — The Trump administration is suspending a tariff hike on $250 billion in Chinese imports that was set to take effect Tuesday, and China agreed to buy $40 billion to $50 billion in U.S. farm products as the world’s two biggest economies reached a cease-fire in their 15-month trade war.

The White House said the two sides made some progress on the thornier issues, including China’s lax protection of foreign intellectual property. But more work will have to be made on key differences in later negotiations, including U.S. allegations that China forces foreign countries to hand over trade secrets in return for access to the Chinese market.

The U.S. and Chinese negotiators have so far reached their tentative agreement only in principle. No documents have been signed.

President Donald Trump announced the trade truce in a White House meeting with the top Chinese negotiator, Vice Premier Liu He. The news followed two days of talks in Washington. “You’re very tough negotiators,” Trump said to the Chinese delegation.

Trump has yet to drop plans to impose tariffs Dec. 15 on an additional $160 billion in Chinese products, a move that would extend the sanctions to just about everything China ships to the United States. The December tariffs would cover a wide range of consumer goods, including clothes, toys and smartphones and would likely be felt by American shoppers.

The trade war has taken an economic toll on both countries. U.S. manufacturers are hurt by rising costs from the tariffs and by uncertainty over when and how the trade hostilities will win.

“They’re trying to de-escalate,” said Timothy Keeler, a lawyer at the law firm Mayer Brown and former chief of staff at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representatives. “I think it serves both sides’ interests because both sides were feeling pain.”

Stock prices had been up substantially all day, partially in anticipation of a significant trade agreement. But once the White House announced the contours of the tentative accord, the market shed some of its gains. The Dow Jones industrial average, which had risen more than 500 points at its high, closed up 319.

The negotiators did not deal with a dispute over the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei. The U.S. has imposed sanctions on Huawei, saying it poses a threat to U.S. national security because its equipment can be used for espionage. Trump has said he was willing to use Huawei as a bargaining chip in the trade talks.

Among the skeptics of Friday’s agreement is Derek Scissors, a China expert at the American Enterprise Institute, who suggested that the deal amounted to merely a temporary pause in the conflict. “The president is acting as if a lot of Chinese concessions have been nailed down, and they just haven’t,” Scissors said.

Gregory Daco, an economist at Oxford Economics, said the partial nature of the deal won’t relieve much of the uncertainty surrounding trade policy that has discouraged many American companies from investing in new equipment and expanding. “For businesses this will mean less damage, not greater certainty,” Daco said in a research note.

Daco has estimated that the trade fight will cut U.S. growth by about 0.6 percentage point in 2020. Friday’s pact might reduce that slightly to 0.5 percentage point, he said.

The two countries are deadlocked primarily over the Trump administration’s assertions that China deploys predatory tactics — including outright theft — in a sharp-elbowed drive to become the global leader in robotics, self-driving cars and other advanced technology.

Beijing has been reluctant to make the kind of substantive policy reforms that would satisfy the administration. Doing so would likely require scaling back China’s aspirations for technological supremacy, which it sees as crucial to its prosperity.

For now, the two sides have come to “almost a complete agreement” on both financial services and currency issues, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said.

The Chinese agreed to be more transparent about the way they set the value of their currency, the yuan. The Trump administration has accused China of manipulating the yuan lower to give its exporter a price advantage in foreign markets. China has agreed to open its markets to U.S. banks and other financial services providers, Mnuchin said.

Earlier Friday, China announced a timetable for carrying out a promise to allow full foreign ownership of some finance businesses, starting with futures traders on Jan. 1, as Beijing tries to make its slowing economy more competitive and efficient.

Ownership limits will be ended for mutual fund companies on April 1 and for securities firm on Dec. 1, the China Securities Regulatory Commission said. Until now, foreign investors have been limited to owning 51% of such businesses.

But I would like to bring up the fact that there is a difference between a “womanizer” and a “ladies’ man”. A womanizer seduces women into their bed, then throws them away like a used condom the next morning, and moves onto the next conquest. A ladies’ man is a man who knows how to attract women, but is true in his intentions of romancing them, instead of just using them for sex. TOS Jim Kirk is a ladies’ man. AOS Jim Kirk is a womanizer.

In the first movie, we see AOS Jim try the sleaziest tactics to pick up Uhura in the bar (harassing, negging), then carry on an affair with her roommate while stringing along poor Gaila’s feelings. He also proceeds to perve on Uhura while she’s undressing. It’s the same thing he does with Carol Marcus in STID, when she specifically tells him not to look at her while she’s changing. We also see Jim in bed with two random alien women who he had over for a casual threesome. He doesn’t really care about romance, he just wants sex. Which is fine, but you have to be honest and upfront about your intentions, or else feelings are going to get hurt.

TOS Jim is just the opposite. He expresses a desire for a partner, but he’s married to his work. He loved Carol Marcus, but she removed him from her and their son’s life because Jim was devoted to Starfleet, and wouldn’t be able to be the family man they deserved. He loved Edith Keeler, but he had to let her die in order to restore the entire balance of nature. He admits feelings for Janice Rand, but he knows he can’t be with her because his work always comes first, and he knows it would be selfish to force someone to share him. But at his core, he is a true romantic. He respects women, he treats them as equals, and he cares deeply about their feelings. He has moments of tenderness that AOS Jim simply doesn’t experience. Yes, TOS Jim Kirk is a flirtatious, horny bastard. But he is very different from his modern recreation, and that can’t be ignored.

I gotta say something about this fandom that I really have an issue with; Y’all like to complain, specifically about the Reboots.

People like to complain about the portrayal of James T. Kirk. I am not talking about how Chris portrays him, I actually haven’t seen anyone blame him which is good. I am talking about how people nitpick the way the character was written. For example, people target the womanizer thing being too different from the show (note; I am not condoning any kind of objectifying behavior) I have seen a good amount of episodes of the TOS show, and I am not exaggerating at all when I say that in every one of those episodes, Jim has some sort of thing with a woman, stranger or not. He’s flirty, and charming, and ends up kissing a majority of these women. This was as womanizing as it got on 60′s television. Jim Kirk was a womanizer, though he was respectful. 

So yea, they put that in the movie, just in a more modern sense. I am willing to bet if it was appropriate back in the day to put him falling into bed with a girl, they would have put that in there. So AOS was not far off in making that a part of his personality, because it always has been. Jim’s a charming son of a bitch.

Could they have left that part out in general? Definitely. But they didn’t, and when people say “jim kiRK WOULD NEVER DO THAT!!! >:( “ Yes he would. Literally watch any TOS episode. Yes he would. It’s been a joke forever for a reason.

AND 

When this weird fandom (or any fandom on tumblr for that matter that violently ships a gay ship and bashes the girl) bashes Uhura simply because they think she’s some character there to get in between the gay fest between Spock and Jim, I just get so mad. Uhura and Spock have been a thing for a while. They were the first interracial kiss on TELEVISION EVER that’s way they put it in AOS, because it would be a disservice to get rid of it, to pretend like it never happened.

It seems to be something that doesn’t happen quite often in the fandom, but I will wholeheartedly defend the characterization of Jim Kirk in AOS. Put your fists up I’ll fight.

And I’ll say it again cause I know some people are gonna try me; I do not condone the womanizer thing. I think its overdone and offensive. They could have left it out of BOTH versions, but they didn’t and you can’t tell me that its one of the things that separates TOS and AOS because it isn’t.

Lots of Sunderland fans discuss Phil Parkinson after Wycombe victory

Sunderland have struggled for much of the season but their form since Christmas has brought renewed hope back to the Stadium of Light, and the team now sit in sixth place in League One.

Jack Ross found himself out of a job after a poor start and the hangover effect from his tenure seemingly plagued Phil Parkinson and his squad, which he has only recently got rid of.

The 4-0 thrashing of second-place Wycombe shows the Black Cats can be a class above on their day, and that is thanks to the spirit and style that Parkinson has finally been able to implement.

He may still only have five wins from 18 games but supporters are beginning to understand his tactics and there is seemingly a strong belief in what he is trying to install at the club, as the six-match unbeaten run indicates that it is working well.

Definitely humble pie. These things take time though don’t they? Let’s hope this continues

“Technology is constantly evolving and the mission needs of our customers can change,” said Mark Keeler, vice president and general manager of BAE Systems’ Integrated Defense Solutions business. “As systems integrators, we are providing agile engineering, testing, and field support to help our military customers adapt and maintain a tactical edge.”

BAE Systems has been supporting Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division’s Special Communications Mission Solutions Division with mobile deployable systems for more than 25 years. Work on this program will be performed in St. Inigoes, Maryland; Little Creek, Virginia; and Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Stuck in trade war, US and China face uncertain path to deal

WASHINGTON — As the trade war between the world’s two largest economies nears the end of its first week, its most unsettling fact may be this: No one seems to foresee any clear path to peace.

The United States insists that China abandon the brass-knuckles tactics it’s used to try to supplant America’s technological dominance. Yet Beijing isn’t about to drop its zeal to acquire the technology it sees as crucial to its prosperity.

Having run for the White House on a vow to force China to reform its trade policies, President Donald Trump won’t likely yield to vague promises by Beijing to improve its behaviour — or to pledges to buy more American soybeans or liquefied natural gas.

“It certainly feels like we’re in for a protracted fight,” said Timothy Keeler of the law firm Mayer Brown and a former chief of staff at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. “Truthfully, I don’t know what the off-ramp is.”

The first shots sounded July 6: The United States slapped 25 per cent taxes on $34 billion in Chinese imports. Most of them are industrial goods that the Trump administration says receive subsidies or other unfair support from Beijing. China quickly lashed back with tariffs on $34 billion in U.S. products.

The two countries have targeted an additional $16 billion worth of each other’s products for a second round of tariffs. All told, Trump has threatened eventually to slap tariffs on up to $550 billion in Chinese imports — more than China actually exported to the United States last year — if Beijing won’t relent to U.S. pressure and continues to retaliate.

At the heart of the dispute: The Trump administration’s complaints that China has used predatory practices in a relentless push to grant Chinese companies an unfair advantage in the industries of the future, including robotics, electric cars and biopharmaceuticals. These tactics include the outright theft of trade secrets, government subsidies to homegrown tech firms and demands that U.S. and other foreign companies hand over technology if they want access to China’s vast market.

Eliminating the new tariffs will prove a lot harder than it was to raise them in the first place, said Wendy Cutler, a former U.S. trade negotiator who is a vice-president at the Asia Society Policy Institute. “Both sides have too much at stake and don’t want to back down.”

So how does the trade war end? Analysts offer several potential scenarios:

CHINA BLINKS.

The Trump administration boasts that China has more to lose in a trade war. After all, Beijing sold $524 billion worth of goods and services to the United States last year and bought far less — $188 billion. So China has far fewer goods to tax than the United States does.

And China’s benchmark stock index — the Shanghai Composite — has dropped 15 per cent this year, at least partly on fears about damage from the trade conflict with Washington.

“It’s a dicey time for the Chinese economy,” said Claude Barfield, a resident scholar at the conservative American Enterprise Institute and former consultant to the U.S. Trade Representative.

Beijing is trying to contain a run-up in corporate debt and manage a difficult transition away from fast but unsustainable export-driven growth based on exports and often-wasteful investment toward steadier growth built on consumer spending. The International Monetary Fund expects Chinese economic growth to decelerate to 6.6 per cent this year from 6.9 per cent in 2017.

So it’s possible that economic pressure could persuade Beijing to cave. Yet many analysts are skeptical. Eswar Prasad, an economist at Cornell University, said the economic damage from U.S. tariffs is “likely to be muted since China has enough room to forestall a growth slowdown” by increasing government spending or adopting easy-money policies that put more cash into the economy.

Mary Lovely, an economist and trade expert at Syracuse University, says it’s unclear how China could appease Trump, even if it wanted to. China has pledged in the past to police cyber-theft and end coerced technology transfers. So any negotiations, Lovely said, would raise more questions: Would the Trump administration accept another promise? How would any promise be verified? How long would it take to determine whether Beijing has actually reformed its ways?

And China’s leaders might prove reluctant to back down and risk a backlash from the public.

“They have nothing to gain internally by kowtowing to President Trump, and that’s exactly what it would be,” Lovely said.

Trump faces pressures, too. The Chinese designed their tariffs to inflict political pain in the United States. They have, for example, targeted soybeans and other farm products in a shot at Trump supporters in the American heartland. And U.S. farmers are represented by trade groups and congressional delegations who aren’t shy about attacking U.S. policies that threaten farm incomes.

But the president would also find it hard to back down. He’s already considered one possible solution only to back away from it. In May, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced after a meeting with the Chinese that the trade war was “on hold” and the tariffs suspended after Beijing agreed to reduce the U.S. trade deficit by buying more American energy and farm products.

Yet the cease-fire quickly collapsed once critics complained that the Trump administration was letting China buy its way out of the impasse.

“The president felt the sting of that and didn’t like that,” Keeler said. So the administration decided to “drive a harder bargain,” and it revived — and ramped up — its tariff threat.

Taiya Smith, a former Treasury official who handled negotiations with China, says it’s possible a deal could be reached in which Beijing ends its predatory practices but can still keep itself competitive in advanced industries. “Their companies are becoming very powerful,” Smith said. “They have to be willing to compete on a level playing field. They no longer need a leg up.”

But she said the U.S. would have to make concessions, too, perhaps by agreeing to let China play a bigger role in global economic policymaking.

“The Chinese have to have a political win somewhere in there, too,” Smith said. “You can’t design something where we get what we want and China gets nothing. They have their own politics.”
