Kaz’s hat is a kind of security blanket. He reaches for it whenever he feels out of control, and he’ll pull it lower over his eyes when he needs to think. He never actually cleans it because each scuff and scratch holds memories of past victories.

Hi Yasi
KANEJ HEADCANNONS PLS
coming right uppp lissyy!!
˖ ⊹˚. 【 kanej headcanonss 】 .𖥔 ݁ ˖
I can't imagine Kanej being overly intimate, skin-to-skin wise, mostly bc of both their trauma with touching other people.
^^ Maybe simple things like Kaz doing Inej's hair, or tracing / kissing her faded Menagerie tattoo is the maximum they can go.
^^ (a kiss would be great tho).
Kaz likes cooking for Inej, knowing she doesn't usually eat eh hem speak for yourself man . Kaz makes sure every night he's with Inej she eats a hearty meal.
^^ Kaz's specialty being a warm hutspot with bread for her
Hugs. And more hugs. Its one of the only ways they can be intimate with each other without actually touching each other's skin.
^^ Also Kaz is way taller than Inej and I can totally imagine him being like "you're missing out on some great weather here, Inej"
Quality of time and Acts of Service are definitely their love language
Kaz (at some point) calling Inej his "beloved" >>>>
Inej makes sandwiches for Kaz like Jordie used to do for him.
Kaz easily gets jealous (and doesn't realise what the emotion is, he just knows he wants to go kill someone. real. bad.
****
requests are openn~!!
feel free to request more headcanons / fanfics of SoC
or any fandom on my masterlist~

Laughing my ass off... In my current canon, Kaz’s wardrobe is chock full of bullet and slash proof Fabrikated clothing. He's got several options to reach out to for healing, poison, etc. Soon enough, there'll be a Heartrender working for the Drrgs again. And Inej has contemplated hiring people to watch over him. Yep.
Lately I've seen a lot of posts about people saying that they can't imagine Kaz Brekker ever dying. The thing is, he really does have just about every base covered
Shoot him straight in the heart? Guess what moron; Inej knew of the plot before even you did, told him, and now he has at least three Heartrenders following him everywhere he goes (yes, three, just in case any of them decide to betray him). Even without a working heart, they force the blood to flow through him. Well, realistically Inej would cut your hands off before you shoot him, but still...
Try to poison him or give him some kind of life-threatening disease? He survived firepox, which would probably strengthen his immune system pretty good. That, plus with how paranoid he is, he probably pulled an extreme "Princess Bride" and built up resistance to every poison you can name
Let him get old and frail, unable to defend himself? He's lived with a broken leg for years, and has thrived with it. He is wealthy and well-connected, with ties to the Kerch Merchant Council, and the royal families of Ravka and Fjerda. Even without them he was a dangerous thief. Anything he needs, he can get, whether it be medical assistance, prosthetics, or just a new cane. Not even time itself can stop him
Point is, to all who say Kaz is immortal, I agree

headcanon that Kaz consistently breaks into the Van Eck house just to steal little things. Wylan's favorite pen. one sock from every pair Jesper has. Marya's most recent painting. a family heirloom Jesper says is hideous. Wylan's flute. Jesper's favorite (and most hideous) shirt. etcetera.
it happens so often that eventually if something goes missing they just assume it's Kaz's fault and go down to the Slat or the Crow Club to get it back. Kaz claims it's to "keep them humble" when in actuality it's his way of getting them to come visit him because he's lonely and misses them (especially Jesper).
when Kaz stole Wylan's favorite pen Wylan and Jesper were busy and couldn't go get it so they sent a servant instead and Kaz insisted he had no idea what they were talking about and that he'd never do such a thing. then Wylan and Jesper showed up later and Kaz was sitting at his desk writing with the pen.

Totally concur. Kaz doesn't want Pekka's title.
From Jezelf Leren Kennen, which I set just after Crooked Kingdom...
Though many referred to him as the new King of the Barrel, Kaz went right on being the Bastard. His power and his reach expanded exponentially, but he didn’t relish taking on Pekka’s old title. Even if he’d once told Inej they'd be 'kings and queens'.
Then there's this excerpt from Verbanden & Geesten, during a gang leadership meeting Kaz called to deal with a problem caused by Pendo...
Pendo, on the other hand, turned to Kaz. and Jes could hear the sneer in his voice. “So, what, Brekker, you think you get to rule over all of us, yet you've never even taken the title of King of the Barrel.” One sharp eyebrow rose, but Kaz otherwise remained outwardly calm. “I don't ascribe to such conceit; everyone here knows that the Barrel isn't for kings.” Patronisingly, Pendo asked, “The Barrel is for a bastard pretending to be a fucking merch like you, then?” The man shifted a half step, putting him a bit closer to Kaz. It allowed Jesper to see his face better. He carefully lined up his rifle, just in case. Kaz tilted his head, eyes descending on Pendo as if he were examining a particularly interesting bug before he squashed it under his boot. His rock salt rasp was pitched to carry, “The Barrel is for those who can survive and thrive in it. For those who have come out on top repeatedly. And it’s now for those who actually take care of their people.”
Kaz and being the King of the Barrel
He is, technically, the king. And I have referred to him as king. But I don't think Kaz would see himself as king.
It's similar to the "Kaz Brekker didn't need a reason thing" because Kaz always has a reason, but the general population of the Barrel see it otherwise. It's the same here: He is definitely called the king but does Kaz see himself as king?
Imo, I think he'd let them call him that, but he doesn’t personally see himself that way. He's the self proclaimed bastard. The illegitimate son. There is a large thematic motif of the monarchy (Pekka: the king of the barrel, the apex predator lion) being taken down by the "Barrel scum", by the personification of the Barrel which is at the bottom of society (Dirtyhands, the Bastard of the Barrel, the Dregs)
To quote the show: "The Barrel doesn't belong to kings. It belongs to bastards." Of course, Kaz is saying that at a time where he isn't king but this is still true! The Barrel doesn't belong to the rich who lord over everyone because they have a "divine right". It belongs to the cunning, the calculating, the ruthless underdogs who fought for what they have.
Imo he let's them call him it for two reasons:
It makes him sound powerful
He usurped Pekka
Both these things are true, and both these things are important. They make Kaz sound untouchable and dangerous. But Kaz still sees himself as the Bastard. He came out on top but he had to work for it! He wasn't just handed a crown, he fought his way up. He proved himself as being the best in the Barrel.
Kings are undeniably the most powerful, which is why Pekka used the title. But Kaz is always being underestimated, whether it's because of his age or the limp, Kaz doesn't garner the respect of a king. Not because of the title anyway. People literally kneel before him because of the fact that he's monstrous and cruel. He clawed his way up, fought for every scrap of respect. The title may give Kaz a concrete proof of power, but even without it everyone knew who was boss.

Friendly reminder that Inej isn't merely a moral compass, and Wylan isn't just a sweet, innocent cinnamon roll. Though they're gentle and kind, both are just as morally grey as Kaz and the rest of the crows

I've discussed the possibility of a DID diagnosis for Kaz with several friends, including one who is a therapist and social worker, and who has DID. While it's hard to nail down if that's what's going on in Kaz’s mind, it's definitely a possibility. Several highly traumatic events at such a tender age could certainly cause a split. And we could also then point to the Dirtyhands persona as another alter. The protective, violent personality that comes out to keep the inner child safe as he tries to survive the Barrel. And add in how Kaz can chameleon himself into roles so easily. No matter an exact DX, Kaz is clearly suffering, and Jordie’s "voice" is an aspect of that, never reflecting the true memory of his actual brother.
I know I've definitely seen posts abt this before, but I can't get over how much the 'Jordie' in Kaz's head is just... not Jordie. Like obviously it's not, bc he's dead, but it's also not even accurate to Kaz's memory of him.
Like these are the sorts of things that are attributed to 'the voice of' Jordie:
Jordie had come for his vengeance at last. It's time to pay your debts, Kaz. You never get something for nothing. But he could hear Jordie laughing. No, little brother. No one is stronger. You've cheated death too many times. Greed may do your bidding, but death serves no man.
While Jordie was no stranger to grandstanding statements, and one might argue Kaz actually picked that habit up from him ('The city is winning so far, but you'll see who wins in the end' for example), these aren't the sorts of things he'd have said to his kid brother??? Yes, he could be arrogant, and he's snappy with / acts superior to Kaz a few times, but as far as we see, Jordie is mostly very good with Kaz; he has a remarkable tolerance for/patience with him, especially for a newly orphaned thirteen year old. Kaz admittedly comes across as a quiet kid and is pretty compliant; he rarely talks to anyone except Jordie and Saskia, he seems to just watch for most of their interactions with 'Hertzoon', he largely does as he's told and doesn't wander off, but he's still like... nine, and wants to do stuff like see the magicians and make all the dogs walk at once, and sulks when Jordie stops him from doing stuff and makes him stay inside. We also see Jordie pretty frequently lying to Kaz to try and make him feel better. But this mental-Jordie is not a comforting presence. The start of SOC is literally set up to make you think Jordie is someone that Kaz has swindled or betrayed, that he fears will come back for vengeance, so it's a big 'oh wait wtf' moment when you realise that he's not a rival gang member or anything, he's just his brother, and it wasn't his fault. But you wouldn't know it! Kaz wants 'Jordie's' voice silenced 'forever' and seems afraid of it, almost— at least, it turns up in vulnerable moments. He thinks that 'paying his debt' (i.e. taking out Rollins) will get rid of it. (Sorry hon. It won't.) Kaz thinks at one point that he still sees Jordie as "infallible" and looks at him through the eyes of the child he'd been, but in other scenes he's glove-puppeting 'his brother' to punish himself. I guess he still sees Jordie, even in death, as the ultimate authority figure, and to cope with guilt/stress/grief he imagines that this is something he's being compelled or commanded to do, and that when he does it he'll have redeemed himself, when really it's just desperate flailing to get the closure he couldn't have. I'm sure he knows goddamn well that this isn't actually what Jordie wanted for him ('You'll go to school') and that's why the mental 'Jordie' is really off, because Kaz knows its not really the will of his brother— it's just him. It talks like him! He doesn't even try to imitate the real Jordie! It's just Kaz, alone— but he's never really been able to come to terms with that.

i just want to see more of wylan/inej's friend dynamic like:
feeding pigeons together
mocking kaz and jesper
trying to figure out if 'i liked your stupid face' and 'investment' were love confessions
trying to sneak therapy tips into conversations with their partners
baking
inej listening intently as wylan rambles about his latest hyperfixation
i mean... this is just too wholesome to miss out on

Kaz Brekker hasn't been to school since he was 9 or younger. But he canonically calculates the Crow Club's books in his head and is faster and more accurate than everyone else. So I can only assume the bastard of the barrel spent his spare change on math books and taught himself in between gang jobs.

so funny to me how Inej when she was freed from the Menagerie had a sort of inkling what Kaz or Per Haskell wanted her to do based on her previous experiences but as it turns out Kaz is like
"haha no pack up looser we're going to steal from the rich now hehe and also you will have to put up with my edgy personality :D"

headcanon that when Kaz gets questions at the Crow Club and Slat about where Jesper went, he tells everyone that he's "off entertaining some mercher". so naturally everyone starts wondering which Council member he's sleeping with and asking why he's suddenly into old white dudes and Kaz just lets it happen cause he thinks it's funny.
then Jesper shows up again at the Slat after a couple weeks of getting settled with Wylan, and everyone's either calling him a traitor or asking him how Schenck is in bed. and Wylan's just standing there next to him laughing his ass off. eventually Jesper gets so fed up he gets up on a table and announces to everyone that he's fucking Wylan Van Eck, former demo man and newest member of the Council, not some wrinkly white asshole. everyone cheers and Wylan goes bright red, and Jesper is very pleased with himself.
