2024 Book Review #43 – Witch King by Martha Wells

Last Hugo (novel) nomination of the year! And I actually read them all before worldcon for once. (Maybe I should actually buy a supporter ticket and vote next year.) Unlike most of the other nominees, I walked into this one with pretty firm pre-existing expectations – I am an absolutely massive fan of Wells’ Murderbot books and so have a generally quite high opinion of her, but I have heard rather mixed things about the book from friends who’ve read it before me (some very positive, others quite harsh). Unfortunately, I mostly have to side with the negative appraisals here.

Well, ‘negative’. The book was fine. If it had been a hugo nominee last year it probably would have been in my top three (happily, in 2024 the competition is much, much tougher). So most of this review is going to come across as very hostile, but to be clear I read the thing in four days or so, it was never offensively bad or anything. It’s just its flaws are most of what seems interesting to talk about as I sit down and think about it.

The book follows Kai, a demon prince left stranded wearing a human body after the passage between the mortal and demon worlds is sealed off. The story begins with him being woken after being imprisoned in an ancient tomb for nearly a year, and jumps between the present day (where he is escaping imprisonment and investigating what happened and etc) and about a generation previously, where he is a key part of the beginning of the rebellion which overthrew the Hierarch's empire and created the world which now seems threatened.

My biggest issue with the story, I think, is that it felt unfinished. Both in the sense that it could have used a sharp editing pass on cutting some fat, and that it only felt like the first third or so of a story. The past timeline is basically the first act (if not the prologue) of a traditional epic fantasy story, while the present day storyline ends in a complete anticlimax, and in any event turns out to be a sideshow to and cleanup of the real actually important plot that had all occurred offscreen before Kai was captured. In both cases there were many scenes where when reading them I was left wondering why this was what the book was spending precious, finite wordcount on.

The comparison I’d draw isn’t Wells’ murderbot books, or even really any traditionally published books at all – it’s serial fiction. When an author is publishing chapters week-to-week, you naturally end up with many scenes that exist because they were easy or fun to write, and the author needed to build themselves up a buffer while they figured out where the story was actually going. Which is frankly just a necessary fact of life in that medium, but far less understandable when you are trying to fit a complete, compelling narrative into 400 pages. I wouldn’t otherwise care about the sheer number of words dedicate to describing seemingly every supporting character’s outfits or the architecture of random hillforts, but as I saw the amount of book left shrink they did start to grate (I would have found the drawn-out-yet-tensionless action scenes annoying regardless).

Which is all very irksome, because there is a very compelling story there – the immortal companion to the heroic rebel, helping him overthrow a cruel empire and establish a new, peaceful and liberated order, only to grow increasingly disillusioned as he watches his friends son try to cement his grip on power and create a new empire in all but name. Pathos, intrigue, meaty character drama! It’s all there! And it just all happens off screen and entirely between the two stories, for some inexplicable reason.

So leaving aside plot, there’s the setting. The book goes out of its way to draw the readers attention to it, with epigraphs at the beginning of chapters lecturing on some bit of sociology or history, and lots of exposition within the main text. There’s a half dozen different cultures and ethnicities with their own naming conventions, political systems, and styles of dress. It’s clearly presented as something impressive – and it just all feels very surface level?

And okay, I am someone who reads an essay series on the economics of premodern wheat agriculture for fun, my expectations in this realm are atypical and probably unreasonable. But, like – this is ostensibly a setting without elves or dwarves or any non-human races besides demons. But the Hierarch’s empire only makes sense if they’re just literally orcs. Crossing an ocean to conquer a new continent seemingly just so you can massacre and depopulate it is not really normal human behaviour! It’s not like they were colonists settling the land, either – it’s explicitly mentioned that much of the continent is just a desolate waste. I kept waiting for some dark wizard ritual or eldritch scheme to explain the why here, but despite repeatedly teasing some secret about their homeland, this wasn’t something the narrative was actually interested in.

The nations of the Rising World Coalition aren’t really as load-bearing to the plot, but still – the idea that there was this whole state system of premodern principalities and republics that had no institutional memory of war kind of beggars belief, and I’m left slightly annoyed that there was a implication-laden conversation about witches being so profoundly weird that they had no renegades because ‘there was nothing to rebel against’ despite clearly having institutional lineages and elders, which was absolutely never followed up on. But all that is admittedly picking out quite tiny nits.

Of more significance is the fact that the societies and politics of the world feel like set dressing for the actions of the dozen or so people who are powerful and Important enough to actually matter, with everyone else helpless against their influence. This is the issue with having a book that wants to be about the importance of doing politics and forging alliances and convincing people of a better way forward, but which has no interest in actually showing what goes into any of that onscreen – so you end up with a prince whose just supernaturally charismatic and persuasive, and a demon who reveals that they already won at court intrigue five years before the story began.

Character interactions are a big part of the real meat of the story, and I leave them for last because I actually do have some nice things to say here. The jumping between past and present letting you see how the relationships begun back then developed and ended up panning out makes everyone’s dynamics very fun (even if doing that you probably could have been a bit less obvious about the foreshadowing in the past too. Bickering reluctant allies to lovers is a fine plot, but if you’ve already revealed they’re going to end up married you don’t need to signpost it so obviously in every single scene they have together in the past too).

By far the most compelling relationship to me was actually the one between the imperial agent who ends up tagging along and helping in the present (who was several decades from being born in the past timeline) and Kai. In large part because there was a real sense of ambiguity and tension there, and subtext that wasn’t instantly dragged up into the foreground.

Anyway, yeah, I probably went into this with expectations too high – but oh boy does it not live up to muderbot.

Marissa's website says this all happens centuries before the Third Era. The Lunar Monarchy is said to be very old, and since Marissa says that the gift spread through Cyprus and his descendants' promiscuity, there needs to be a fair few generations for it spread to everyone on Luna. In Winter Kai walks down a "long hall" lined with the portraits of past Lunar rulers, so there has been many monarchs, not just a handful. Then:

World War IV finishes and the Third Era begins.

Michelle Benoit is born 56 T.E so Jannali is presumably born around that time.

The events of the main books happen 126 T.E

All this considered, TLC takes place anywhere from 300-500 years from now, though it could be even more. Here's a potential timeline:

The moon is colonised approx 2060.

Then another 60 years it becomes a Republic, taking us to 2120.

Several centuries of the Blackburn monarchy pass, so let's say the Third Era begins 2300.

Then 126 years of the Third Era takes us to TLC happening in 2426, roughly 400 years away from us today, 2023.

TLC will be about 15-20 or so generations away from us right now. I think it can only be around 300-500 years because you would expect tech to be more advanced if it were 600+ years.

edit: also! Universal language is a new language combining English, Spanish and Mandarin, so that would've needed time to form! After all, we can still read and understand Shakespeare from 500 years ago, so a new language would need several centuries to develop.

#4 Bears Win Minnesota Invitational

Cal Takes Four Events On Final Day of December Event

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 4 California men's swimming & diving team finished the Minnesota Invitational in style, winning four of the five events on Saturday at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. The Golden Bears swept the 100 freestyle and 200 butterfly and had the top two finishes in the 400-yard free relay.   Cal was the team champion with a score of 2,360 points. Arizona finished second with a score of 1,455 and was followed by host Minnesota with a score of 1345.5. The Bears received individual wins from Destin Lasco, Jack Alexy, and Dare Rose -  with all three recording NCAA A qualifying times in their respective events.   Saturday's finals began with the timed final in the 1,650 free. The Bears placed two in the top five, with Jack Meehan finishing third with a time of 15:11.92. Tyler Kopp finished with a time of 15:13.90. Both were good enough for NCAA B-cut times.   Lasco and Keaton Jones went one and two in the 200 backstroke. Lasco, the defending national champion in the event, finished with a time of 1:38.34 - an NCAA A-cut time and the second-fastest mark in the NCAA this year. Jones set a new career-best with a time of 1:40.23, an NCAA B provisional time. Ziyad Saleem took fourth with a time of 1:41.69, followed by Colby Mefford who finished with a time of 1:41.96. Kai Crews finished seventh with a time of 1:43.09. All three times were good enough for NCAA B provisional times.   The 100 free was dominated by Cal. The Bears captured the top four spots, along with sixth and eighth places. Alexy finished with the fourth-fastest time in the country this year, touching the wall with a time of 41.41, an NCAA A-cut time. Bjorn Seeliger and Matthew Jensen finished second and third with NCAA B-cut times of 42.31 and 42.80, respectively. Robin Hanson took fourth with a time of 42.97 – narrowly missing an NCAA B-cut time. Dylan Hawk took sixth (43.37) followed by Roman Jones in eighth (43.53).   Jacob Soderlund and Liam Bell recorded NCAA B-cut times in the 200 breaststroke. Soderlund finished second with a time of 1:55.96, less than two-tenths of a second behind winner Max Matteazzi of Pitt. Bell finished in fourth with a time of 1:56.33. Hank Rivers placed eighth with a time of 1:59.49.   In the final individual event of the meet, Cal once again took the top three spots. Rose dropped 5.50 seconds from his prelims time to finish first with a time of 1:39.76. It is the third fastest time in the nation turned in this year and an NCAA A-cut time. Gabriel Jett finished well under his prelim swim with a time of 1:41.33. Aaron Shackell finished third with a personal-best time of 1:43.40, an NCAA B-cut time.   In the final event of the meet, the 400 free relay, Cal once again had the top two times. The Bears' A lineup of Alexy, Jensen, Jett, and Hawk finished with a time of 2:48.55 – the sixth fastest time in the country this season. Cal's B lineup of Seeliger, Lasco, Hanson, and Bell finished with a time of 2:48.88 which would be the ninth fastest time this season.   In the platform diving championships, freshman Geoffry Vavitsas finished second in the finals with a score of 341.20. Conrad Eck captured third with a score of 307.90, a zone-qualifying mark.   The Bears return to action in 2024 with back-to-back dual meets against Pac-12 foes Arizona and Arizona State on Jan. 19 and 20th at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

it was never meant to be like this. but the reality of heroics also holds the antithesis of it - evil, acts of violence in the name of some greed-fueled fervor. bringing children into it, whether they be training for hero work or not, had you clutching your chest. they were innocence, they were young. they deserved to at least make it to adulthood before being thrust into that all-consuming battle, one that had maintained its consistency for as long as you could remember.

and seeing your husband in the hospital after the usj battle had you cursing the genetics settled in your dna. in his, in every other quirk-possessing individual you knew. it was past the point of no return, each generation wrought with power stronger than anyone should have to bear. and now, with aizawa's eye bandaged up, his body painted shades of purple and red that felt so foreign, you wanted to scream.

low hospital beeps intermingled with his soft breathing were the only sounds in the room. nurses and doctors had come in, checking his vitals, administering pain medication via iv. he'll be okay, everything is going to be okay. but it wasn't going to be okay, nothing ever felt okay anymore. it had been two days. two days without his low rumble of a voice, without a hand ruffling through your hair with his own brand of affection.

day merged to night, the hours on the clock passing by in a blur. the nurses kept offering food, water, anything. but nothing would make the ache go away, take away the reality of the situation. you could have very well lost him, and then what? you shook your head, fasting during this odd and unwelcome vigil. the colors of the sky cast shadows onto his face, the colors only serving to remind you how long you had been waiting.

yellows to reds, reds to violet, and violet to a deep indigo, one that pushed your eyes closed. resistance was futile - they hurt, bloodshot and heavy by your own insistence. when they finally shut, your dreams were fitful, unwanted memories of every time he had come home battered and rundown to you replaying like a horror film. the colors faded into black and white.

you don't know how long you slept. hours mean nothing in the land of dreams, and you weren't privy to its mysteries and fickle rules. but you let yourself be awash in its darkness until the realities of life brought you back.

a low murmur of your name had you groaning, your head throbbing from days of neglecting your own needs. fuck, what could anyone possibly need from you, you were waiting for him, he was-

"jesus, y/n. what happened to you?" aizawa's familiar voice had your eyes snapping open.

"me?" you bit back incredulously, jaw dropping in utter shock. he had the gall to ask what happened to you? what did they put in his iv? "are you fucking kidding me, shouta?"

that turned the corners of his lips upwards, a gesture so comforting that it brought tears to your lashline. the absolute bastard.

"you look like you've seen a ghost, angel," he replied simply, stretching a hand out slowly to wrap around one of your own. that contact was enough to bring the air to your lungs, as though you'd been breathing at only a fourth of your capabilities from the moment he'd been brought in. "were you worried or something?"

an eyeroll at his teasing. always one to keep your anxieties at bay.

"maybe something like that," you mumbled, your other hand reaching to press against his cheek. gentle, like he was glass. like he was yours to protect, which now... now he was.

"you never have to, angel. i'll always come home to you." a promise, one that he never made lightly. none of his promises were ever broken.

"no, no i won't," you mumbled, unable to hold his eyes. "i'm going to take nezu up on his offer after all."

his unbandaged eye went wide, a look that begged, pleaded for you to take it back. but you wouldn't, not this time.

"no buts, shouta. if you're in this fight, then i am, too. you always protect me, your students, this city. it's time i protect you, too." the words came out stuttered, knowing that this time you wouldn't go back no matter how hard he tried. "i'll be here for you. just like you are for me. deal?"

his eye shut closed, exasperation clear. his former smile had turned to a thin line, but he soon let out a heavy sigh, eye opening to meet yours once more. the small smile came back, a bit more tense this time. but you'd take it.

🍇 - Are they protective?

Yes! It's like Atsumu thinks everything is out to get you. Always got his hands on you when in public, he doesn't want anyone getting any ideas so he makes sure people know you're together.

Akaashi is protective when it's necessary. If you get catcalled he will tell the person off with grace and maturity. He's not looking to start anything and keeps you as his top priority.

Suna is a smidge protective but he's so laid-back and chill that it's not very noticeable. He just acts like himself with an added spice (aka he will flip off weirdos for your sake)

🍑 - Where do they like to be kissed?

'Tsumu is a big ol' puppy so he loves smooches on his cheeks! He probably wouldn't even care where you kiss him because he would just eat up any affection you give him.

Akaashi favors delicate kisses on his forehead or hands. He enjoys the tenderness behind each kiss and melts from how loved he feels.

Suna likes multiple kisses up and down his neck. These kisses usually relax him but they could easily lead to something else if done a certain way.

☀️ - What are they like in the morning?

Atsumu is clingy in the morning. He loves snuggling with you and is addicted to how warm you are. If you're trying to make breakfast or something he's probably hugging you from behind and got his nose buried in your neck.

Akaashi is still tired in the morning. Poor guy stays up pretty late for work and on average catches only about 5 to 7 hours of sleep, and that's on a good day. He likes the mornings because of how quiet everything is but he's always just a bit cranky before a cup of coffee.

Suna's sleep schedule is a bit wacky in general. He suffers a bit from insomnia so he's usually kind of sluggish in the morning, that or he will sleep till 2 in the afternoon to compensate for the sleep he's lost. He's usually very quiet in the morning, he uses this time to scroll around social media and look at memes (which he shares with you)

you had made a plan to surprise soobin, with the help of yeonjun and the staff. you were sitting in the backstage room, they had lent you a mask and a staff shirt, you were supposed to see him tomorrow, but you couldn’t wait. Yeonjun came up with the plan.

They were performing at an end of the year event, snuck you in would be easy since there were lots of people coming in and out, you waited where they told you and some minutes later their manager was guiding you through the hallways of the precinct. “I bet he’ll cry” their makeup artist told you, “I can assure you he will” another person from the actual staff said. “they are coming y/n stand by the corner and pretend you are talking to her” their manager pointed to a make up artist.

their steps got louder by every second, they finally opened the door, “HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!” Kai shouted, the whole room started clapping and cheering. You glanced at Yeonjun and winked at him, only making him chuckle. Soobin being the leader that he is, started giving a speech.

“thank you so much everyone, we are here another year because of the hard work and dedication of each and every one of you and-“ he stopped, you made eye contact with him, you stayed still, waiting how much longer it would take him to realize, “i’m sorry i thought i had seen someone,” he didn’t break eye contact with you, he must have thought that his mind was playing tricks on him, after all he was exhausted, “anyway i-“, he stared at you again, “everyone in the room was trying their best to keep a straight face and not to laugh.

“y/n?” he said finally and the whole room cheered again. you took off your mask and ran to him, giving him a warm tight hug, tears started streaming down his face, the staff laughed. “i thought you were at your parents house” he said confused, “why are you here? not that i’m complaining but how is it even possible?”

“this is the part where i say your welcome” yeonjun said chuckling, “thank you” he looked at him dearly, “happy new year bin” you smiled cupping his face in your hands, his hands slipped to your waist, “happy new year love” his lips touched yours in a delicate way.

“hurry up we're are hungry” beomgyu complained, soobin glared at him, “bin be nice to them” you hit his shoulder lightly, beomgyu stuck his tongue out, “just wait til we get home” soobin said.

hey hey! you should introduce me to your ocs!

I should, shouldn’t I?

Ok, I have WAY too many ocs and stories for one post, so I’ll pick one of my more recent ones.

So this is a sci-fi story I started working on back in May, I think, though there were some earlier versions that were so different they don’t really count.

It takes place 300-400 years in the future or so, I haven’t figured out an exact time frame, but humanity has more or less explored the whole solar system. The protagonist, Kade Serrano, is a 15 year old kid from Earth who joined the United Terran Forces’ space exploration division. He’s a very talented tactical cadet, so for a field exercise, he and two other cadets, Kai Asif, a gunner, and Elan Sep, a pilot (I’m bad with names, don’t @ me) are assigned to a basic patrol mission guarding a military factory out on Kerberos that’s producing an experimental fuel that they think could be the key to interstellar travel (via wormholes or something, it’s not really important). But something goes wrong, the factory blows up, and the kids are transported way out into space. Their ship, not designed for much more than patrolling, is heavily damaged because of the blast, and Elan is severely injured. After about a week of them desperately trying to save him, he dies. Shortly afterwards, a ship picks up their distress call, and they’re saved.

But that’s just the backstory! So, basically the rest of this needs a timeline, so here are the big events (this entire story is told non-linearly, we start at the very end and we slowly figure out what happened from flashing through the timeline)

Kade and co. get blasted into space, Elan dies.

Kade and Kai are rescued by some aliens. The main ones are Exdar, who is basically a giant shapeshifting slime creature, and a very talented hacker. Hu’s honestly one of my favorite characters. Hu and Kai are bros. Another important character is Garitso Ky’dai Vifepo, or just Garitso, who’s kind of a big, strong mole-looking alien, who’s a really good mechanic. Kade and Garitso become pretty close friends. The other one is Ans’hevei’skz, or Ans, who is basically a sentient pile of rocks (well, she’s a parasite that attaches to and can control a specific type of rock, but whatever). She’s the leader of the aliens, and is REALLY important.

The aliens turn out to be part of a rebel group fighting an evil galactic empire, and they’re like, ‘since you guys have no way of getting home, want to help us fight the bad guys’ (earth’s, like, not on any star maps or whatever, so it takes a long time for them to figure out how to get back) and since these kids were practically raised on Star Wars, they’re like, sure sounds legit (I know this sounds like every Star Wars ripoff ever, but I promise it’s not)

So Kade and Kai join up with the rebels, and for about two years, everything goes exactly like ya sci-fi books always go: the rebellion gains ground, becomes a legitimate threat, Kade and Kai start dating, etc., but something’s not right. Kade realizes that they’re winning battles that they shouldn’t be winning, entire warships disappear, they’re becoming very powerful very fast, and a lot of their allies seem shit-their-pants terrified of Ans. Things just aren’t adding up, so he investigates, and it turns out that Ans has gotten her hands on a nasty doomsday weapon capable of destroying planets.

This is where we get some character info on Kai that becomes really important: Kai doesn’t like killing. At all. He believes that sometimes it’s necessary, but he always tries to make sure as few people die as possible. Planet destroying super weapon is, understandably, something he is not cool with. He doesn’t believe Ans can be trusted with it, as she’s been know to be pretty callous and not care about civilian casualties, but he knows that Ans will never give it up willingly, so he decides to steal it.

He meets with Kinj, a young imperial general who’s trying to change the empire for the better (note that Kinj is NOT a good person, he’s just the best out of a lot of bad options, and Kade is pretty morally dubious at this point) Kinj and Kade strike a deal, where Kade helps Kinj stage a coup to take over the empire, and in return, Kinj protects Kade and the super weapon from Ans and the rebels. Note that, at this point, because of the weapon, the empire and the rebels are roughly equal in terms of numbers and how much space they control.

Kade steals the weapon and switches sides, becoming Kinj’s main tactician. (Despite being on Kinj’s side, he absolutely refuses to use the weapon.) Kai is understandably really upset, because Kade deemed it to big a risk to tell him about all of this. Kade also starts going by Leo at this point, because I love it when characters get new names when they become villains and also it creates a really interesting dichotomy between Kade and Leo and I just really like it.

So, for the next six years, Leo and Kai fight on opposite sides of this massive galactic civil war. Leo tries, at first, to find a peaceful/diplomatic solution, but after years with no progress, he eventually just tries to end the war as quickly and decisively as possible. Things aren’t going great for him though, because after a majorly military coup and stuff, the empire is really disorganized and kinda falling apart while the rebels just get stronger. Kai and the rebels eventually find a way to Earth, which joins the rebellion. At this point, Leo can never go home or see his family again, so angst.

Eventually the war comes to a horrible battle over a planet called Galloran. It rages for six days, and costs billions of lives, including Garitso. Eventually Kinj is defeated and Leo is about to be captured with the super weapon, and believing that Ans would kill so many people with it that it’s worth any price to stop her, he uses the super weapon to destroy Galloran, and escape. (Very ‘you have the thing you once swore to destroy’ vibes here)

Leo goes into hiding, trying to rebuild the empire so he can kill Ans and end it once and for all, while Kai chases him throughout the galaxy, trying to capture him and end it once and for all. This has been going on for about two years by the time the story starts.

So, yeah. Basically my idea was that I wanted to explore the idea of a very morally grey villain protagonist who knows he’s a monster, but still believes he’s doing the right thing, and like a non-linear story where we slowly realize how he became what he is. Also, I very much enjoy gay star crossed lovers and tragedy. The whole thing has a very overt anti-war message that I hope came across here. Very ‘war corrupts anyone it touches, no matter what’ and it’s also very anti-government. Yeah! This took a while, and is incredibly long, so I guess we’re done here.

Moaning awake, you stretched your arms and legs as you laid. Blinking your eyes, you slowly sat up. Looking around, you noticed you weren’t in your room. You creased your eyebrows together as you rubbed the side of your head, letting a soft whine due to your pounding head.

Where am I?

You slowly moved to have your feet dangling off the bed. You tried to think back to the events from last night, but you only remember a few things.

I remember penguins… Something about punching someone… Wait… I think I’m at Atsumu’s home… 

Standing up, you slowly made your way to the bathroom, starting on what you could be able to do in your morning routine. Finishing up in the bathroom, you went back to the bedroom and started to change into your clothes from last night.

Done changing your clothes, you quickly made the bed and then walked out of the bedroom, silently closing the door behind you. You looked down the hallway and saw an opening to what you assume was the living room. Walking down, you passed by a door that was open ajar. Curiosity got the better of you, you quietly peeked in. Looking inside the small crack, you noticed there was a bed in the middle of the room and someone sleeping it in.

Atsumu is still sleeping… I should let him sleep.

Closing the door quietly, you walked down the hallway and into the living room. Snooping arming, you noted Atsumu had good taste when it comes to decor. Making your way into the kitchen, you couldn’t help to fall in love with it. 

Atsumu really does have good taste! 

Hearing the doorbell, you peaked your head up in surprise.

Should I answer that…

Nodding your head determinedly, you walked over where you thought the front door was. Hearing knocking from it, you knew you were right. Taking a deep breath you opened the door with a smile, greeted who was at the door, “Hello-”

“Who are you?” The women outside the door snarled at you. “Why are you doing here?”

“I’m a friend of Atsumu…” you trailed off, “He let me stay here for the-”

“I don’t care,” She walked past you, rolling her eyes. 

“Oh, kay…” You pursed your lips together, closing the door. Noticing she went somewhere, you decide to not worry about it and go back to the kitchen. Decided to make breakfast as a thank you, you went through the cabinets and fridge, noticing he doesn’t have anything to prepare breakfast with. But he did have cereal, so you poured yourself a bowl, slowly eating it. 

Moments passed the women from the door walked past you, fuming at something. You noticed she was heading towards the front door. “Have a good…Day…” You said to her as she walked past but she ignored you. Hearing the front door slam closed, you muttered to yourself, before taking another bite, “Bitch.

“Mornin!” Atsumu walked in with a smile, preparing his own bowl of cereal.

“Morning,” You greeted him. “Who was the girl?”

Chuckling nervously, Atsumu shrugged, “She was someone I slept with the other day and she didn’t like I call her back…”

“I see,” You nodded, looking back down at your cereal and take a bite.

Seeing you looked down at your cereal, Atsumu started to panic, quickly rushing his words, “I’m not a womanize or anything! I mean yeah I sleep with women…A lot of women… But I’m not a scum or anything!”

“I never thought you were,” You blinked at him, giving him a small smile as you giggled at him ramble.

“G-Good,” Atsumu sighed, seating next to you on the kitchen island as you both ate. “Did ya figure it out?”

“About Hana?”

“I did,” You smiled at him. 

Atsumu blinked at you, waiting for you to continue as you blinked back at him with a smile. “A-Are ya goin’ to tell me?”

“Nope.”

“Why not!” Atsumu whined.

“Because…” You reasoned with him, sticking your tongue at him, “She trusted me with it and not you!” 

“But she told you?” Atsumu pouted, not liking how you are keeping the information away from, him.

“N-Not really…” You said sheepishly.

“What do you mean?” Atsumu blinked, tilting his heading confusion.

“I had to read in between the lines,” You said awkwardly. “She didn’t actually say it…”

“But you know?”

“Yeah, I know.”

“And ya not goin’ to tell me?”

“Nope.”

“I’ll give ya $100.”

“I already have $100.”

“$400.”

“I have $400.”

“I’ll buy you breakfast.”

“Deal.”

“Alright!” Atsumu cheered, “Let’s go!”

“B-But our cereal,” You pointed at the bowls.

“They are too soggy,” Atsumu grabbed your wrist and pulling you to the front door. 

“Can we at least stop at my place first,” You laughed at his eagerness, “I need to change into something else?”

“But won’t that baby carrot be there?” Atsumu raised an eyebrow at you.

Shaking your head as the two of you exit his appointment and walking towards the elevators, you told him. “He should be at the office right now…And baby carrot?”

“Like to think he got a small dick,” Atsumu smiled at you as the two of you entered the elevators and clicked on the lobby button.

“I mean…” You shrugged your shoulders. “It’s kinda average.” You noticed in the corner of your eyes, Atsumu looked down at his crotched and backed up with a victory smirk, seeing how proud he was. “What’s with that look?”

“Nothin’ ya need to worry about doll,” Atsumu patted your head with a smug look.

Bears Display Depth At Triple Distance Meet

CAL WINS 3 OF 6 EVENTS & BOTH RELAYS IN SHOWDOWN WITH stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Two of the nation's top-ranked teams met for the first time in 2022-23 at Avery Aquatics Center this week. The top-ranked Cal men's swimming & diving team displayed its impressive depth taking three of the six events as well as the two relays in the annual Triple Distance Meet against Stanford. A non-team-scoring meet, the Triple Distance Meet splits swimmers into event groups (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, sprint freestyle, distance free, and individual medley) and requires swims at three different distances within the event: 50, 100, and 200 yards in the fly, breast, back, and spring free; 200, 500, 1,000 in the distance free; 100, 200, and 400 in the IM. The Golden Bears won more than half the events including the Relay victories. Sweeps by Gabriel Jett in the back (50: 21.99; 100: 46.89; 200: 1:43.30; Total 2:52.18) and Destin Lasco in the IM (100: 50.13; 200: 1:45.73; 400: 3:51.03, Total: 6:28.89) highlighted the Bears' strong showing down on The Farm. Robin Hanson was victorious in the sprint free group for the second consecutive year. After finishing sixth in the 50 free (20.27) and third in the 100 (43.92), he was victorious in the 200 (1:36.37) to finish with a total time of 2:40.56, finishing ahead of Stanford's Luke Maurer and Rafael Gu. Bjorn Seeliger finished seventh overall in this event, however, he was the winner in the 50 (19.76) and 100 (43.57). Matthew Jensen won the 100 fly (48.15), but was fourth overall in the event. Dare Rose was second in the fly group taking second in the 50 (21.96), third in the 100 (48.41), and second in the 200 (1:47.50) to finish with a total time of 2:57.87 – three-tenths of a second behind top finisher Jonathan Affeld (2:57.55). Jett won the back group, he finished ahead of teammate Colby Mefford who finished second overall with a total time of 2:55.13. Mefford was fifth in the 50 (23:29), third in the 100 (48.30), and second in 100 (1:43.54). The Bears finished the afternoon with a terrific showing in both relays. Cal finished first and second in the 200 medley. The Bears' "B" quartet of Jett, Luke Rodarte, Liam Bell, and Seeliger finished with a time of 1:27.41. Right behind the "B" team was the "A" team, consisting of Kai Crews, Jacob Soderlund, Rose, and Colby Hatton who finished with a time of 1:28.22. In the free relay, Cal's "B" relay team of Jack Alexy, Lasco, Hanson, and Jensen finished first with a blistering time of 1:19.33.

Rosie is my owl house oc. To some what understand my suneye au you need to know her ( though her story is different)

Rosie was born in the demon realm. As a baby she was somehow transported to the human. She was found in a Rose bush my a puritan man named Jacob Smith ( totally didn't get their last name from kai from Ninjago) who took her as his own. Her father know that she was different. How couldn't he when his daughter pointed ears and could grow rose thorns out of her body. So to keep her safe from their puritan town he had her wear a bonnet. Growing up Rosie had to keep her Thorns ( that response when she upset) at bey. She also discovered her love of reading and teaching, she teach the children how to read and write ( in secret of course, though puritan woman were allowed to read and write certain things) in adulthood some one saw her with out her bonnet and her Thorns were out then accused her of being a witch ( they technically were right but also wrong) on the day of her hanging her father help her escaped. She rad into the woods and fell in to the boiling isles..... No literally she was running where she fell in to a howl ( Alice in wonderland style) into the sky. That is how she met Philip wittebane.

Young Philip wittebane was waking when he saw something In sky and was getting close to him fast. In the end Rosie landed on him. When she landed she was reasonably was freaking out. Philip now bruise said something along the lines of " witchs falling on eneone!" When she told him she not a witch, he rolled his eyes and said" only witchs and demon have pointed ears though your are the smalles I've seen." Rosie then replied" yea your ears are the biggest I've ever seen." After some bikering Philip took Rosie to the local witch town. With her world upside-down she wondered about her birth parents. Sence Philip was the only person she knew ( also that he knew more about the demon realm then she did) and were both looking for someone they came to an apartment she helped him find his brother and he helped her find her birth parents Also with money

Eventually she got a job as a teacher at the local school house hexside. But she still went on " adventures" with Philip for extra cash. I returned she let him sleep at her house. Sence she didn't grew up in the boiling isles learning magic the traditional way became harder for her but she figured out a different way to manipulate plants, though danceing and talking to the plants. She found her paliman in the woods and name him bush. ( Who is a little shit) as the years went on Philip and Rosie grew to enjoy each other company and fell in love with each other. ( More like insulting each other tell it turned into flirting) Philip propose after 3, years of know each other and 3 months of courting. Sence the bride and groom were both to stubborn to change their last names they combine both their last name ( wittesmith) After they were married they build (and with a little bit of magic) a house together. 1 Year into their marriage Rosie discovered that she was pregnant she couldn't wait to tell her husband the news when he got home. That is when tragedy struct. Philip coming home couldn't wait to sing a song that he wrote about her to his beloved. But when he got home he saw his house almost burn down and the love of his life in the hands of a dragon. ( You know that seen in how to train your dragon 2 it went like that.) Calling each other names as Rosie fade away. In the few the time in his life Philip wittebane fell down and cryed. That day became known as the dragon maiden festival.

400 years later after the event of hollow mind and labyrinth runners ( this is we're Canon is diverge a little or a lot) dering the dragon maiden festival hunter mentions that belos despises this holiday and that a pink peacock come to the castle the the emperor chase out. Hunter suggested that the Bird might know something of how to beat belos. So Lis and Hunter went to the woods to find this Bird. But it didn't take long the peacock was waiting for them. The two fallow the bird to a house in the middle of the woods in front of the house is a man singing a song. Lis and Hunter tried to be as silent as possible. It didn't stop them from being notice my the man " come out I know your there." The shadowing figure terd around and to be ( the one the only) emperor belos in a baggie jakit Lis was terrified hunter more so. there was a very awkward pause. It was interupted when belos notice the bird " bush you dam bird you lead them here did you!!" Let's say the of site of the emperor of the boiling isles bikering with a peacock lason the terrified teens. " Look here I'm not in the mood, now please ge-." When he was about to finish his sentence. He herd a voice, Rosies voice calling out to him. Rosie was all he said before running into the woods to the voice. The teens were both wondering " who the hell is Rosie." So they fallow the emperor to a cave. This cave was no ordinary cave it shows the pass of all who go in there. In the cave there was a woman laying down with something in her arms. To say the evil emperor was crying was an understatement. It was the first time hunter saw belos cry, Lis was stond that he had the ability to. The couple cry each other names. But it stopped, belos notice the she berly age while she noticed he looks older then she remembers last seing him and his ears are different and a werd skar. " Philip what happened to your wile I was gone." " You been gone for a awfully long time my dear. 400 years to be exact" Rosie shook " no I have I've been here for 9 months, and I just gave birth. Ummm Philip met you son Jacob h. Wittesmith. " As she reveals what she was holding was a baby. (As it was 400 years for him it was 9 months for her)The man who killed and purified millions, who could manipulate eneone fainted. Lis was laughing her but of and record it. Hunter on the other hand was coming to the fact that he has a(technical) aunt and a cousin. On their way out of the cave belos /Philip was in shock ( as a man does when decovers to be a father for 400 years) Rosie explain that she was going to tell him.

Out of the cave belos took Rosie hand " my love I very different from the man you knew, I've done very bad things. You deserve better man....he both deserve better father then." You see our girl Rosie is also a stubborn butch as her "husband ". So she slapped him in the face ( hard I might add) " I never married a good man to begin with you big earned buffoon, and I'll make you fall in love with me again you jerk." ( Lis and Hunter In the background: 👁️👄👁️🍿) the man laughed and kiss thes beloved hand and his new son head. On he way out he ask hunter and Lis to watch over Rosie even though he shouldn't. That night Rosie and her son went with Lis and Hunter to the owl house telling her everything the Phillip/ belos done and explaining eda the night. The next someone ( it was Rane spoils alerts) Rosie got their house, monny ( hes paying his child support) and custody of hunter.
