glances were exchanged as you were sitting on the bed, resisting the urge to bite your nails and instead fiddling your fingers.

you could tell how your friends grew more and more uneasy with every passing second, noticing how you were still looking for the right words, like you were afraid of how they might react. and yet you knew them well enough to be aware that, while feeling uneasy, they tried to keep an open mind, fearing that once they’d call out loud for the devil, he’d be there, right around the corner.

“thank you guys for coming,” you finally broke the ice, still fiddling with your fingers in your lap.

all of them nodded. “of course,” it was aran, who sat on the bed next to you, who replied, his lips curling upwards.

you didn’t know if he was trying to comfort you or himself.

you cracked a weak smile, briefly looking at each person in the room before looking back down. “guess i better get right to it, huh?” you mumbled, just about loud enough for everybody to hear you.

“please,” kita affirmed softly.

you opened your mouth to continue, but soon found out that no sounds could escape. you tried again and again, only to close your mouth over and over again.

just how were you supposed to say it?

you mentally groaned in frustration, clenching your fists and digging your nails into your palm.

your friends grew concerned, their eyebrows furrowing. aran leaned slightly forward, examining your carefully. “(y/n)? are you okay?” he asked.

maybe you should just rip it off, like a bandaid? or ease into it? you didn’t know.

and realistically speaking there was nothing you could do to soften the impending impact.

“i’m getting transferred” you started slowly, swallowing down the lump in your throat. you shyly looked up again with a weak smile on your lips. “out of this hospital”

immediately your friends leaned closer to you, their facial expression softening at you, tense frowns being replaced by warm and cheerful grins. “did you find some specialist?“

your heart ached at the hopeful sound of aran’s voice. did you really have to crush that hope? could you even be so cruel?

“that’s good! great even!” kita continued, an honest smile on his face.

meanwhile suna only shrugged, but you didn’t fail notice how his face lit up. “yeah! you’ll finally be able to leave this abomination of a room” he looked around the room before shrugging once more, focusing his attention to you again. “sounds like a great thing to me”

“this room does suck, yeah,” you agreed weakly, trying to ignore the weight on your shoulders, pressing you further down every second your friends celebrated the supposed good news.

“see?” atsumu grinned, no longer leaning on the wall and instead walking towards the foot of your bed. “i’m sure it’ll all be okay”

osamu agreed with his twin, playfully shoving him after catching up with him, leaning forward. “it can’t get much worse, can it?”

they sounded so hopeful. why couldn’t you sit here with good news?

you clenched your jaw. “guys—“ you started, yet found yourself unable to continue.

“can it?” osamu repeated, waiting for you to affirm him.

hope. what would they do if they found out that there wasn‘t much hope left for you?

you pressed your lips together, wishing you could just pinch yourself to wake up from this, wishing that all of this was just a dream.

and maybe it was.

osamu and atsumu exchanged another glance, as if they had to confirm that you were indeed quiet, instead of happily sharing some great news. nervously, the blonde twin spoke again. “why aren’t you saying anything?”

maybe it was a dream. but that dream turned out to be a nightmare.

next to you, aran shifted in his seat, looking at you nervously. “(y/n)? what’s going on?”

you knew you should speak up. say something, anything.

but you just couldn’t.

instead you looked at your hands, your knuckles became white as you flexed them more and more.

what were you supposed to do?

you didn’t know just how to respond. you didn’t have any good or even slightly hopeful news with no clue how to break them to your friends.

you wanted to. you needed to. but how?

the boys grew more concerned with every passing minute, especially once they noticed how aran, your best friend since you could even think, had shut down, just like you did. they looked at each other before deciding to sit down on every surface near you — next to you on your bed, on your bedside table, pulling up a chair to sit in front of you.

you could practically feel how their heart ached.

after a while, aran leaned back, his hands intertwined in his seat. he couldn’t even look at you anymore, his eyes instead focused on the floor. “you’re not being referred to some specialist, are you?”

you swallowed, trying to get rid of the lump in your throat. “no,” you whispered, shaking your head slowly.

you couldn’t see how your friends looked at each other again while aran reached over to you, grabbing your head, like he had done ever since you were children. it was a familiar gesture, one that always gave you comfort and reassurance.

but today you felt your heart crack as soon as his hand engulfed yours.

next to you, suna turned his upper body in your direction, his hands shoved in the pocket of his sweatshirt. “then where—“ he stopped for a second, like he was afraid to continue, afraid of what you might say. “where are you going?”

you opened your mouth, only to close it again, your throat protesting the second you tried to produce a sound.

you couldn’t.

“(y/n)?”

“hospice“ your voice wasn’t louder than a whisper and if it wasn’t quiet in here then you were convinced that nobody would’ve even heard you. and as soon as your voice died down, silence settled over you again — you practically could’ve heard a pin drop.

not daring to look up, you instead continued to stare at the floor with such an intensity that you almost feared to burn holes in it.

“wait,” osamu frowned, taking a deep breath. instinctively he reached out for his brother’s hand, a habit the two of them had ever since they were kids, and atsumu gave it a squeeze. “you’re going to die? is that what you’re telling us?”

yes you were.

“(y/n)?”

you hated the sound of kita’s voice. he sounded so unsure, so weak.

kita was never one of these things. he had always been a rock, a safety net.

and now the net had a big hole in it.

“please, say something,” it was suna who begged with a shaky voice, fidgeting in his seat as he silently prayed that he misheard. that all of this was a giant prank. a dream. anything but reality. “anything”

“i’m sorry,“ you breathed out, clutching aran’s hand forcefully as you finally, finally, allowed tears to escape your eyes, leaving behind a wet trail on your cheeks. you looked up at your best friend, practically shivering in your seat. “i’m so sorry”

Hinata points at the student who was speaking to one of their classmates in the hall. Kageyama's eyes instantly glue on them, and Hinata makes a face.

“Kageyama, they’re not going anywhere.” He says, but the tall one doesn’t respond. “Oh god.” Hinata shakes his head, then nudges his arm. “Kageyama.” “Ugh, what?” Kageyama doesn’t look away. “Ask them what their name is.” Finally, Kageyama looks away, but he’s staring with fear at Hinata. “No way.” “Why not?"

His cheeks flush pink. “B-Because.” Hinata smirks, “What’s this? The King is nervous?” “Didn’t I tell you to stop calling me that?” Kageyama responds coldly, only making Hinata smirk more. “Not until you ask what their name is."

Kageyama grumbles and stares back at the student. The more he stares, the more he wants to shit himself. “Wow, it’s true; the king is drooling.” Kageyamas snaps his head behind him, and it's Tsukishima, with Yamaguchi tagging along like always.

“Shut up!” Kageyama screeches. “He’s supposed to be asking what their name is.” Hinata says. Yamaguchi chuckles. “And how’s that going?” “Not good.” Hinata sighs and glares at his partner. Kageyama sneers. “Guess someone is pussy.” Tsukishima comments, which pisses Kageyama off even more. “Watch! I can do it!"

Kageyama, who developed a sudden confidence boost, marches his way to his crush. He taps their shoulder, and the person turns around. They notice who he is and smile warmly. “Hello, Kageyama.” Upon hearing their voice, Kageyama freezes.

“Is there something I can help you with?” They ask with a head tilt. Kageyama stutters, and he starts feeling a bit sweaty. “Kageyama?” They notice his friends in the background, and they look at him again. “Is this about volleyball? Do you need me to do something for you?"

Kageyama opened his mouth, but nothing came out. His crush and the other person that he forgot is also there; they just stared at him.

“He’s embarrassing himself.” Yamaguchi says, and Hinata sighs, “Damn.” The short one heads his way to Kageyama and grabs his arm. “Sorry about him. He was just wondering if there was any assembly today.” He chuckles, and the student giggles. “No worries. To answer your question, no, there isn’t.” “Good to know.”

He drags Kageyama back until the student says, “See you later, Kageyama.” Kageyama looks back, and they wave at him before going back to talk to the person they were working with. “Stop drooling, Kageyama.” “I-IM NOT!”

the place is hot and damp.

after carrying the heavy baggage of assignment after assignment, the party's a breath of fresh air; despite the suffocating bodies of sweaty college kids. walking through the crowd, all the tension in your body relaxes, and you feel a cool hand on your back.

"y/n! you actually made it!" the voice beams at you. it's hard to hear clearly over the music swelling in your ears, so you turn your body to get a better look at the person greeting you.

it was bokuto, the sweetest man you've ever met. you've been friends with him since freshman year, which wasn't surprising since he got along with practically everyone. despite this, your friendship was special to both of you. meeting on the first day of college eased your nerves, given how tense you were. how couldn't you be? it was the first day, you knew basically no one.

catching yourself drifting into thought, you shift your attention back to him. you realize it's been a few seconds after he said something. your eyes meet his.

"hi kou," you smile warmly at him. you're trying your best to sound like yourself right now. you haven't been to a party in months and while the atmosphere is flashy and fun, you're still a bit on edge.

he notices something's off, making a face akin to when you would quiz him during your study sessions. he gently grabs your hand. "come with me! i was just with saeko in the garage, her and the volleyball team are playing pool!"

as your lips part to reply to him, saeko suddenly appears in front of you both now. she's out of breath. "saeko, what's going on?" bokuto asked, brows slightly wrinkling. he's worried. shit, you are too.

"not now, bo," she replies. she looks at you like you could save her life right now. bokuto stares dumbfoundedly.

"y/n! come with me please, i need a favor. we'll talk later, bo!" saeko passively says goodbye to him as she grabs your hand and leads you away.

⋆ ˚｡⋆୨୧˚ S2, EP 5 . man of the hour

tsukishima wasn’t an expert, but he was quite familiar with the mechanics of mortal kombat. the game consisted of three rounds, and to claim victory, you needed to win two out of three. and the moment that crimson-haired figure stepped into the apartment, it began.

round one. FIGHT!

“hi tennie!!” you rose from your seat and walked over to hug tendou, and the moment your arms wrapped around him—

tendou wins. round two.

suna, being tsukishima’s long-time rival, was well-acquainted with his strategies and mindset. despite tsukishima’s reluctance to embrace the label, he was undeniably a geek. and with that information, suna had a pretty good idea of how the night would unfold—at least until two rounds were secured.

“hello everyoooone,” tendou’s voice carried a tantalizing tone as he strolled over to the dinner table with an effortless grace.

“hey tendou,” suga said, his voice calm but welcoming. “lemme get you a chair,” he offered, rising from his seat. without hesitation, he made his way to the pantry closet.

everyone else shared a quick sentence of welcome as suga returned with a chair. “i’ll sit right by n/nieee!” tendou cheered enthusiastically, his voice filled with energy.

“um, actually, it’d be easier if he sat at the edge,” hinata chimed in, his tone light but practical, “you know, so we don’t have to scoot all the chairs!”

hinata gave an awkward smile—it was comical, really. you could almost picture a sweat drop slowly falling from his forehead.

tsukishima had never appreciated his presence until now.

“yeah, that’s true,” akaashi reassured.

tendou had a face no one could quite describe. “hm, okay,” he agreed, though his tone didn’t carry the same cheer as before.

dinner played out the same as before, but no one could ignore the way tendou always managed to capture your attention and keep it on him.

whenever someone called your name, it took a few tries before you even heard. yaku had to slap your arm a couple of times just to get you to focus.

to tsukishima, it felt like a losing game—none of your closest friends could grab your attention, no matter how hard they tried.

“y/n,” a deep voice called, finally breaking through and catching not just your attention but practically everyone’s at the table.

you weren’t gonna lie—the sound of tsukishima’s voice had your heart jumping in every which way. you knew you were blushing redder than a rose, but you couldn’t help it.

“yes, tsukki?” you replied, your voice timid. whatever this feeling was, it was strangely foreign. it wasn’t like what you felt with tendou.

to be fairly honest, tsukishima didn’t think he’d get this far. he didn’t even realize he had actually said your name. he’d just been running one of those cringey, badass scenarios in his head when, all of a sudden, your name slipped out of his mouth.

he was sweaty. “um…” he cleared his throat. “do you—” another throat clear. “do you mind passing the dumplings?”

at that very moment, everyone at the table slumped back into their chairs, sighs echoing all around. well, except for one person.

“BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!” tendou burst out, finding tsukishima’s lack of confidence absolutely hilarious.

your face sprang into surprise. “oh,” you said, not meaning to sound so disappointed.

you grabbed the bowl of dumplings and carefully laid some on tsukishima’s plate yourself.

“HEY, WHY ARE YOU GIVING HIM ALL THE FLUFFY ONES?” nishinoya shouted, clearly offended.

“because he’s cute and you’re not!” you shot back without hesitation.

even after what happened? tsukishima thought, and he was sure he wasn’t the only one. it must be some sort of redemption.

“y/n,” he said again.

this time, you hummed softly in response, trying to mask the excitement in your voice from him simply saying your name.

“after dinner,” he paused, “would you mind teaching me some more dance styles of spain?” his tone was velvety, the way he spoke sending a wave of numbness through your body.

you smiled, genuinely happy someone was so interested in your ways, your culture. “OF COURSE, TSUKKI!” you said, maybe a little too excited.

tsukishima wins. round three.

and tendou wasn’t laughing anymore.

[ cue more dramatic music and end credits ]

fun facts:

when y/n got back from her trip, everyone went to see her (they secretly just wanted their seashells). they held their own tiny auction on the floor of y/n's condo, making ridiculous trades and attempting to convince the other person to hand over a certain seashell.

jolie and atsumu fight like siblings (lovingly) if they see an opening, they will definitely take it and tease the other.

LMAOO bomb defusal with kenma and shoyo! i haven't played it myself but i keep getting asked to. i know that one person takes control of the bomb while the other has a manual (guess who has which... bc it's disastrous either way...)

yaku's one of kuroo's co-stars on his certain film! yaku also worked on daybreak with oikawa and sakusa; i added his name onto the daybreak poster in chapter 24!

they're just happy to see a familiar face from high school again. brings back memories!!
