Live Picks: 4/5
The Antlers; Photo by Hana Tajima
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Composers. Americana. The saddest indie rock you’ve ever heard.
Nils Frahm, Art Institute of Chicago
Since he last played Thalia Hall a year ago, German musician/composer/producer Nils Frahm has released a couple EPs, Encore 1 and Encore 2. However, he’s still predominantly touring his 2018 LP All Melody, which includes a stop at the Rubloff Auditorium at the Art Institute of Chicago (presumably rescheduled from Symphony Center due to the CSO strike).
Revisit our profile of the label to which Frahm is signed, Erased Tapes.
The Antlers, Thalia Hall
Their most recent album was 2014′s Familiars, but 2019 marks the 10-year anniversary of The Antlers’ heartbreaking breakout album Hospice. The record got reissued earlier this year as Frenchkiss Records’ 100th release, celebrating their 20th anniversary. The band plays Thalia Hall tonight to celebrate, likely playing the record in full before an encore of other material (including Peter Silberman’s solo stuff).
New York composer Tim Mislock opens.
Ryan Bingham, Park West
Ryan Bingham is doing the opposite of what the Chicago Cubs are doing right now: keeping it simple, having fun, and delivering substance. The first three songs on his new album American Love Song reintroduce him with a bang. On “Jingle and Go”, he describes the joy of playing at bars for tips. He stomps along in the Stones-esque “Nothin’ Holds Me Down”. He then even has the gall to reference the character of Jumpin’ Jack Flash in the first lines of “Pontiac”. He doesn’t care.
But then Bingham slows things down. Broken and defeated, he tries to woo someone on the twangy “Lover Girl”, offering a more realistically drab worldview on both that and the finger-picked blues ditty “Beautiful and Kind”. His raspy voice provides such a high level of aesthetic authenticity that he dispels the normally tired authenticity narrative, and that voice is especially effective on these lyrics-forward slow songs. For instance, from anyone else, a country swayer like “Situation Station” would be cliche, but hearing Bingham lay into Donald Trump with gravel is convincing. Even better is the filthy “Got Damn Blues”; Bingham’s pronunciation of the title words seem to alternate between the actual title and “got them blues.” Backed by a gospel choir, he makes you feel it, too.
Over 15 songs and an hour, of course American Love Song has some throwaways (“Time for My Mind”, “Blue”, and the too obvious “America”). But overall, Bingham saves the truly reflective songs for the second half of the album, and many are standouts. Not just the impressively mandolin-led “What Would I’ve Become” or the cemetery tales and crescendos of “Stones”--“Wolves”, a beautiful acoustic guitar ballad, sees Bingham describe getting through a rough childhood of bullying, feelings that surfaced again after conspiracy theorists questioned Parkland survivors. Oh, and he throws a burner in the middle of all these tearjerkers, the jail rock of “Hot House”. You could say Bingham does a lot with a little, and he’d probably tell you it’s the only way he knows how.

L.A. rock band The Americans open.
Lilly Hiatt, Fitzgerald’s
We previewed Lilly Hiatt’s show at SPACE last year:
“Nashville singer-songwriter Lilly Hiatt recruited a new band for her third album Trinity Lane, and it’s her best record yet. With John Condit on guitar, Robert Hudson on bass, and Allen Jones on drums and production by Michael Trent of Shovels & Rope, Hiatt has found the perfect sound for sad stories like 'The Night David Bowie Died' and honky tonk jams like 'See Ya Later' alike.”
Kansas City guitarist/songwriter Katy Guillen opens.

Music Reviews: Mariel Buckley, plus Forrest McCurren, Ever More Nest, and Katy Guillen & the Drive @mariel_buckley @ForrestMcCurren @EverMoreNest @KGandTheDrive @byJeffBurger #newmusic2022 #americanamusic #buymusic
Mariel Buckley, Everywhere I Used to Be. There’s blood on the tracks of this evocative second album from singer, songwriter, and acoustic guitarist Mariel Buckley, who says that her music “has often remained a vague, if not softer representation of my stuff, until now.” Her goal with the dozen original songs here (including two penned with co-writers) was to let out her feelings and have people…

“In elementary school, there was this girl that I met in first grade. Her name was Emily and I wanted to be her friend because she was popular. I asked her, 'Do you want to be my friend?' and she says, 'No, because you’re black.' It was confusing to me because I did not understand the difference and my mom never really explained it to me because she went through something like that.
About a year later, I attended this poor elementary school where I was one of the smartest kids in the class; this made my other classmates resent me. They would make comments saying, 'Why do you sound like a white girl, Azauria?' 'I don’t know, that’s how I talk.' I started feeling some type of way not thinking I wasn’t black enough and everyone was antagonizing me because they felt that I thought I was better than them.
In middle school, my family moved to Virginia Beach and it was a whole different experience because I was being accepted by people for being smart. However, I sometimes felt weary because I felt that there will be that same resentment. Soon, people called me an 'Oreo' because I was 'white on the inside and black on the outside.' I would just laugh it off, but then I would go home and question it. People would ask me if I had any white relatives because I sound like a white person.
I went to a different high school than any of my other classmates, mainly because of the travel programs that they offered. I began to realize that those comments from my past didn’t matter. I got to prove a lot of people wrong about myself. I remember senior year, this freshman who rode the bus with me would be mocked about being an 'Oreo' and asked me, 'Hey Zeze, do I sound like a white person?' I would tell him no and make him understand that that’s just who he is and the way he sounds. I realized that just because you sound white doesn’t mean you’re white on the inside. But at the same time, people just associate sounding white as being educated is degrading.
I felt like a role model in that moment because I was more aware of who I was at that point compared to years previous when I was confused and felt that I needed to fit in. At Virginia Tech, it doesn’t feel the same because you [do not] see as many people that share that kind of ignorance about stuff and if you do meet those types of people, they are more open to changing that way so they don’t offend anyone. Also, in college, people are more mature and more aware. My experience at Tech is a lot more open than those previous years because more people see different points of view.”

Hello! I just wanted to know if you had any face claims for you OCs and how you feel about illustrations of your work? Thanks!
The second question is much easier: I love them so much. Art of my work fills me with awe and glee.
Faceclaims are harder because I am very, very bad at them, but here's what I do have, both for OCs and for canon characters who don't have actors/images easily available:
Milena: this stock photo and/or Audrey Hepburn
Aiden: Santiago Cabrera as Aramis in The Three Musketeers
Aubry: Jason Momoa as Ronon Dex in Stargate Atlantis
Esra: Brent Burns as Skane the Viking in Vikings
Agata: Megan Dodds as Marguerite de Ghent in Ever After
Julita: the-ladybugs-soul on tumblr
Dragonfly: Katy M. O’Brian (with a blonde wig)
Cedric: Christian Kane as Eliot in Leverage
Roland: William Moseley as Peter Pevensie in The Chronicles of Narnia
Gweld: Stefano Masciolini
Axel: Booboo Stewart
Elen an Craite: Sophia Myles as Isolde in Tristan and Isolde
Rach of the Cats: Vitalina Batsarashkina (Olympic gold medalist)
and last but not least, I am leaning towards Harvey Guillen (as Guillermo in What We Do In The Shadows) for Sasha (Aleksander)
