You’ve fallen asleep, Walker can feel the rise and fall of your chest against his own as he cradles you close, his lips brushing over your hairline. He’s lost count of how many nights he fantasied about this when he was in prison, the press of your bare skin, your limbs tangled up in his.

He’s missed you intensely over the past seven years, you’re laugh, your smile, the way you would always give him that look when you were up on stage playing the, like he was the only man in the world.

You’re the only woman whose ever been able to do that to him, whose seen his scars, lived his journey, who understands him on a level that transcends the man that everyone sees on the surface.

He can���t explain how much it hurt to cut you loose all those years ago, how it felt like he was cutting out a part of his soul but it was the best thing for you he had thought. He was looking at almost a decade in prison and he knew you’d wait, because you, you’d stuck by him his entire life. The drugs, the drink, the stints in rehab. You’ve been the only constant throughout his entire life.

“You have to live a life without me.” He had you told during the first and last visitation. “Go out into the world, make music, find a man who loves you, one that isn’t as fucked up as me.”

You’d tried to fight him, to argue that there couldn’t be anyone else, there was him and only him and that’s when he realised, he had to be the one to let you go. He’d terminated visitation after that, hoping it would give the clean break you deserved. That’s when you’d started to write the letters, one every few months for seven years, detailing you’re exploits out in the world, the adventures you were having playing fiddle around the country, the life you were leading without him. He had never written back, not even he received his release date because he hadn’t wanted to intrude, to disrupt the life you had built without him.

He'd been out three months when you turn up at the bunkhouse, you’d heard from a another musician who’d seen him playing at an open mic night in Bozeman, his first one since prison.

He’d known the moment he’d laid eyes on you, that nothing had changed, not for him and not for you. You’re both still as recklessly in love as you’ve always been.

His fingertips trail lightly over the tattoo on your left shoulder, a heart with two music notes, one for him and one for you. He has the same one inked upon his chest, a symbol of a love that will never die.

You stir in your sleep, nuzzling into the curve of his throat and he closes his eyes sighing contently. His road it’s always been a hard one and you’ve always been right there, holding his hand, walking it with him.
