• Recently Read: Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye • . . . Jane Steele isn’t quite a retelling of Jane Eyre. It is more of a self-aware satirical reimagining of the classic Brontë novel. The book was a fun, yet as any good gothic should be, morbid and intriguing read. I say fun, and that probably isn’t the right word for a book that involves its heroine murdering people, but that’s the word I’m going to use. And without lingering on it too long those murdered in the coarse of this novel deserved it so... With a lot of classic literature, a story’s heroine is often treated poorly and unfairly by relations and other characters, usually men. That treatment is usually what she must overcome in the course of the story. Faye does something very different for her heroine in this version of a classic. She has her deal with these issues in a significantly more violent manner and in a twisted way it was a little bit more satisfying than having the heroine overcome struggles through strength of will and goodness. Not to say those aren’t valuable things to possess, just to say that for what ever this might apply to my own character and psyche, it was intriguing to read about a heroine defending herself and others in this manner. And yes, obviously murder is bad. Jane’s actions in this novel however, allow for an interesting comparison to the way we normally see heroine’s of romantic, gothic period literature. Again, just in case someone is reading this as more than a review or analysis of the book. Even if some asshole deserves it, don’t do murder. Murder is bad. . . . Overall, I really liked this novel. It had action, friendship, self-reliance, romance, mystery, morbid humour, and an eerie gothic atmosphere. I’ll definitely be looking into Faye’s other writing. . . . #readingrecommendations #bibliophile #bookstagram #janesteele #janeeyre #lyndsayfaye #bookreview #readingissexy #books #bookish

• Recently Read: a closed and common orbit by becky chambers • . . . the long way to a small angry planet was quickly added to my all time favourite reads. This second instalment in The Wayfarers series did not disappoint! . . . The Wayfarers series is all about the characters. Their relationship to their surroundings, each other, and themselves. Space, aliens, AI’s, love, friendship, exploration, inter species dynamics, and so much more. If you are a fan of science fiction and character driven stories I highly recommend this series. . . . A Closed and Common Orbit was also my book for my Astronomy O.W.L for the #owlsreadathon2018. Which means I have completed three now! . . . Has anyone else read this series? Do you prefer action packed science fiction or character driven? Or a mix of the two? . . . #owlsreadathon2018 #astronomy #sciencefiction #aclosedandcommonorbit #beckychambers #thewayfarers #bookstagram #favouritereads #books #readingrecommendations #space #stars #characters #readmore #readingissexy

• happy sunday ☀️ • . . . . I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend! . . . I have added Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters to my tbr pile. I was super stoked when I found it at a local secondhand bookstore. I’ve been wanting to read one of Waters’ books for ages so hopefully I’ll get to it this month. . . . I haven’t made much of a dent in my TBR for the month though because I ended up deciding to reread The Emperor’s Edge series by Lindsay Buroker. There are 8 books in the series with some novellas inbetween but I’m still reading and enjoying myself so it’s all good. . . . How about ya’ll? Have you been sticking with your TBR or getting a little side tracked? . . . #bookstagram #bibliophile #tippingthevelvet #sarahwaters #lgbtq #historical #books #readmore #readdiverse #writingbywomen #readingissexy

• Heathen - Writing and Art by @alterici_art and Lettering by Rachel Deering • . . . Heathen finally arrived in the mail the other day!!! I’m so stoked. To be honest, all I know about Heathen is that it started as a webcomic, @thevaultcomics picked it up at some point, it’s about a queer viking women, and both @tessfowler7 and @heyjenbartel have done cover art for some of the issues. All of this sold me on it pretty quickly. I also know I’m a little late to the party BUT it can still be a party if it’s just me, the four issues in this volume, and midnight snacks right? . . . #bookstagram #bibliophile #comics #vaultcomics #heathen #natashaalterici #lgbtq #vikings #readmore #readingissexy

• Currently Reading: Artemis by Andy Weir • . . . This book has nothing to do with dice, at least I don’t think it does, I just think they are pretty and they match this bookmark from @tillanddill. Does anyone else try to theme their bookmarks to books? Like sci-fi books get space bookmarks, fantasy will get wands and dragons and so on. I use to just use random scraps of paper as bookmarks but then bookstagram happened and I now a decent bookmark collection. Do you have a favourite bookmark? . . . Also, there may not be much of a theme for the rest of this month or next month because I’m dog sitting at my brothers and didn’t want to bring what I normally use with me. I’m not sure anyone cares but if you do that’s why. . . . #bookstagram #currentlyreading #artemis #andywheir #bibliophile #books #sciencefiction #bookmarks #dice #readmore #readingissexy

• Recently Read: Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds • . . . Will has a choice to make. To follow “The Rules” or to break from them. Long Way Down weaves together the workings of community, the effects of decisions, and the reality of gun violence. . . . I just - I have so many feelings. I think everyone should read this book. It’s told in verse. It won’t take long. The ending will stay with you. • Recently Read: Kissing the Witch by Emma Donoghue • . . . I really enjoyed this short story collection. I have probably mentioned before that I love retellings of fairytales and folklore so when I saw @thelastredhead_ recommended this collection recently I knew it was something I wanted to pick up. Kissing The Witch tells stories from different perspective of women in classic fairytales, linking each story, and playing with the ideas of villain and heroine. I am all here for that. Also, it’s all about the girl/girl love story. Which I am also here for. . . . #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookrecommendations #fairytale #folklore #retelling #kissingthewitch #emmadonoghue #lqbtq #readmore #readingissexy #books #shortstories

• Recent Read: Binti by Nnedi Okorafor • . . . Nnedi Okorafor has brought some much needed diversity to space. I am very much here for all of it. I wish this story was longer and I wish we got more time with the title character but the parts we do get are wonderful. This ninety page book addresses what it is like to leave home and carry your culture, knowledge, and passions with you. Okorafor is unapologetic in her depiction of the universe in Binti and its parallels to ours. I’m definitely picking up the other books in this series. . . . Also, don’t touch other people’s hair. But, do read diverse space books ( and please recommend them to me) . . . . . . #bookstagram #readdiversebooks #diversescifi #sciencefiction #readmore #readdiverse2018 #binti #nnediokorafor #bibliophile #books #novella #readingissexy #stem #space

• Recently Read: Bestiary by Donika Kelly • . . . There were so many things I loved about this collection. Things I couldn’t relate to and things that I could. Every poem was striking, intense, and some were absolutely magical. Kelly explores her experiences through beasts and places both mythical and real, from Griffins to whales, human and creature. Kelly narrates her journey, creating an atmosphere and weaving together imagery that pulls you along with her. “I’m interested in becoming the best version of myself, not teaching anyone else about morality. I want to explore, ‘what are the stakes here?’ The book is about me exploring how I can become a better person” - Donika Kelly . . . Read these poems. And the introduction by Nikky Finney. It’s important. This collection is intense and some poems may be triggering. If you have questions about that, ask and I can offer what I think might be triggers. . . . #bookstagram #readdiversebooks #poetry #poems #donikakey #bestiary #bookrecommendations #bibliophile #readmore #lgbtqia
