Katherine has AuDHD and that's why she and Race get along so well..?

at the risk of sounding cynical, i really don’t think that post-canon, everything in newsies is great and happy and, well, disneyfied.

i’ve never seen crutchie as surviving past, like, 20. sometimes in polio patients, post-polio syndrome occurs, worsening muscle paralysis and possibly affecting breathing up to the point of death. not to mention polio itself affects the immune system. even if he did survive, his quality of life would be pretty poor — he would almost certainly live in poverty, if he avoided the poorhouse.

i’ve never believed that katherine and jack could end up getting married or being together long term. there were historical exceptions for wealthy people marrying below their own status, but they were rare; katherine would’ve faced extreme social pressure. and also, they’re like, 17 or 18 when they get together. katherine is utterly naive, privileged, and impulsive; jack has anger issues and unresolved PTSD. i mean it when i say they’re not really good for each other, no matter how sweet i think they are. and i don’t think it worked out for them.

on that front, i don’t think jack is a very healthy person, or at least not for a long time. his trauma is deep and severe, and he flinches at little touches, raises his voice at the littles (despite hating himself for it), has horrific dreams of michael almost nightly. tears became strongly feminized in the 19th century along with showing strong emotion, and jack — with his hypermasculine western fixation and predisposition to posturing— would’ve fallen especially prey to these ideas. he internalizes his trauma, covers his scars under layers of fabric, and shoves his feelings down ever deeper.

if race kept up with the gambling and skirting with the law, he could’ve gotten involved in bigger, sketchier stuff, like working with the five points gang (irish) or the eastman gang (jewish). (race is canonically italian/jewish/irish depending on your sources.) we know race has bad impulse control and is hotheaded; if he got into sketchier territory, he could have easily gotten himself into trouble, sent upstate to sing sing or rikers. that’s some major extrapolation, but i could see it happening.

all that to say, i resent disney for covering the show in this kid-friendly gloss when that’s just not the bleak reality. maybe that’s why i love hard promises. it’s hard, and dark, but it makes the glimpses of joy that much brighter. don’t do these kids a disservice by pretending their lives were all easy and happy, because they’re fighters for a reason.

random modern newsies head cannons (with absolutely no evidence or reason) pt. 1

main characters first!

Jack:

Draws all over his clothes. Put a pen in his hands and he’s immediately doodling on all over his jeans. Ff there’s a design he likes and doesn’t want it to wash away, he’ll ask Davey to embroider it.

Also draws on other people’s clothes (with permission. unless you're Crutchie and then he's just gonna draw on you).

Leather jackets and cowboy boots.

Never says I love you but always shouts after people to be careful.

Never drinks water and always complains about having a headache, but claims drinking water means he wastes time going to the bathroom when he could be painting.

Can't touch his toes. This is random but I feel it so strongly.

Davey:

CANNOT sit still (or normally). is always shifting, sitting backwards in chairs, pulling his knees to his chest. Claims it helps him think better.

Majored in the humanities in college with an incredibly niche concentration/focus that he will always explain in detail, even if the person who asked about it doesn't care.

Designs his own clothes (and decorates Jack's). He wants to look stylish but is picky about the fabric and fit, so he makes his own stuff and it's rly cool and unique.

Goes to parties to watch people and silently judge them. Stands in the corner with a glass of wine.

Everybody loves him. He is so popular but has no idea.

Katherine:

Rock climbs. Jacked back and freakishly bendy.

Runs the school paper and is everyone's campus crush. She doesn't know this and also could not care less what anyone thinks about her anyways.

Has this one bright red jacket she wears from fall through spring, and is therefore never dressed warmly enough for winter. Her cheeks are always so pink but she claims she's never cold.

Stands with David at parties and takes notes for inspiration.

(I read this one in the fic Nothing but Old Doubts Now by CoraRemarks on AO3) but she has two dads; Plumber and Pulitzer. This is fact.

Sarah:

Plays soccer (midfield, though she did goalie for a bit too) and is insanely good at it.

For two years only wore her hair in two french braids. Immediately after she cut it all off.

DJ'd at frat parties for a long time and would always mix in the weirdest, nichest music. Was threatened to be fired many times, but never was.

Is always injured but you'd never know it; she broke her wrist once and it took her two days before she decided it actually hurt.

Nobody knows NYC like Sarah. She knows every store, restaurant, etc. and has ranked opinions on everything as well.

The WORST at sympathetic words but the best at sympathetic actions.

Everybody is in love with her. She knows.

Summary: Jack finds out the hard way that you’re Pulitzer’s daughter and he’s not happy about it. But, after forcing him to listen to you, you show him that he can trust you.

It was late and cold, Jack was hurting and angry. He’d gone back to the newsies from Pulitzer’s office, trying to disband the strike. The boys didn’t take this well, yelling and shouting at him like they hadn’t been friends for most of their lives. He stormed around on his rooftop, kicking and punching the railings, his breathing ragged as his body tried to keep warm in the cold air, and his brain tried to fight off the emotions that were becoming all too much for him to contain. The newsies, however, weren’t even the half of what was working him up so much. No, it was you. He was furious and sad.

While in Pulitzer’s office, he noticed the stamp patterned over all the documents spread all over his desk. Jack could barely remember what Pulitzer said to him. His head hurt, his brain felt like lead. That stamp had the same emblem as the one in your necklace, the one you’d told him was a family crest.

He wasn’t exactly being quiet up there, the echo of metal ringing and his angry cries made it pretty easy for you to find him.

“Jack,” you spoke his name as you climbed up the ladder to meet him.

Jack took a sharp breath in, “you shouldn’t be here.”

“What? Jack, we’re worried ab—“

“You’re worried, huh? Yeah, right.” Jack’s voice was raw with emotion, his words tinged with bitterness as he cut you off.

You frowned, confusion knitting your brows together as you approached him cautiously. “What are you talking about, Jack? What’s going on?”

He turned away from you, unable to meet your gaze as he wrestled with the truth threatening to spill from his lips. “I knew it was too good to be true,” he confessed, his voice barely a whisper, “I saw your matching family crest with Pulitzer. Nice surprise, really. I mean, how long did you think you could lie for?”

You froze, your heart skipping a beat as his words sunk in. “Jack, I…”

He spun around to face you, his eyes filled with a tumult of emotions – anger, sadness, confusion. “You lied to me, a-and every other newsie” he accused, his voice cracking.

Tears welled in your eyes as you reached out to him, but he recoiled, pulling away from you. “Jack, please, let me explain—”

But he shook his head, his jaw clenched with determination. “I don’t want to hear it,” he spat, his words laced with hurt.

“Jack, I’m not my father.”

“No.”

“Jack-“

“I—I’m not an idiot. I shoulda known,” he groaned, “girls like you don’t wind up with guys like me. Just piss off.”

With that, he turned away from you, his shoulders hunched against the biting wind as he retreated into the darkness of the rooftop.

You weren’t about to let him do that.

“No Jack,” you gripped the back of his shirt, pulling it to turn him to face you. Before he had the opportunity to turn back around, you gripped the collar of his shirt in both hands, forcing him to look at you.

“I am not my father. I am on your side, Jack. YOUR SIDE. I didn’t tell you he was my father because I knew you’d immediately disregard me.” You stated, not once letting your eye contact be broken.

Jack's gaze softened as he looked into your eyes, the intensity of your close proximity playing with his head. He swallowed hard, his throat tight with emotion as he struggled to find the right words to say.

You could see the conflict playing out in his eyes, the battle between his wounded pride and the sliver of hope he still had left. And then, without a word, you released your grip on his shirt and took a step back, your own emotions threatening to overwhelm you.

You gripped at your necklace. With one hard yank, you pulled it off your neck, snapping the clasp. He watched as you leant over the railing, tossing it as far into the night as you could. Turning away from him, you took a deep breath, steeling yourself for what you knew would come next – rejection, dismissal, the final nail in the coffin of what could have been.

But then, just as you began to descend the ladder, his voice stopped you in your tracks.

"Y/N."

You paused, your heart pounding in your chest as you turned to look at him from the ladder.

"So we wasn’t too good to be true?" he asked, his voice soft yet filled with uncertainty.

You hesitated for a moment, your mind racing with a thousand thoughts of what to say. And then, summoning every ounce of courage you had left, you climbed back up the ladder and leaned against the railing, meeting his gaze head-on.

"Why don't you kiss me and find out," you challenged, your voice barely above a whisper.

Jack scoffed and shook his head. But as he looked into your eyes, he realized there was no jest in your expression, only a fierce determination and a vulnerability that mirrored his own.

“Wait, you’re serious?” he asked, his voice tinged with astonishment, his accent thick with disbelief.

You didn’t say anything, your gaze never leaving his as you held his stare, your heart pounding in anticipation.

And then, without another word, Jack closed the distance between you, his hands cupping your face as he pressed his lips to yours in a kiss that was both tender and passionate.

In that moment, everything else faded away – the cold, his anger, his hurt, your fears, the weight of the world on your shoulders. There was only Jack, only the warmth of his touch, the softness of his lips, and the overwhelming rush of emotions that came with him. Good ones.

There was a hunger in the way he kissed you, as if he was trying to convey all the emotions he couldn’t put into words. You pulled away, the soft smacking sound of your lips parting from his broke the silence.

“I am Y/N Pulitzer, Jack Kelly. Or should I say, Francis Sullivan.” You teased.

“You know?” His eyes widened, wondering how on earth you found out his birth name.

You shrugged, “We’re even now,” and extended your hand for him to shake.

“Nah,” he pushed your hand away, back down by your side, “I’d rather kiss.”

He smiled, pulling your body into his until your lips met again.

Further plot explanations:

Crutchie coming out as nonbinary-exactly what is says on the tin, Crutchie and Jack about to go to bed in the penthouse when Crutchie comes out as nonbinary to Jack, then maybe a short scene of the morning after where Crutchie comes out to all the newsies, everyone is supportive

Jack coming out as trans to Medda-again, pretty much what it says, Jack is a trans man and through either binder mishaps or him getting his period he has to tell Medda, she’s supportive

Canon era Sprace marriage-this is a fun one, Spot and Race want to get married but gay marriage is illegal so they hold a “newsie wedding” in Medda’s theatre with Katherine as the officiant and a bunch of wacky queer shit

The consequences of Pulitzer’s polycule- go to my incorrect quotes blog @faefox9s-incorrect-quotes to learn what Pulitzer’s polycule entails, basically a crack fic where Pulitzer is a trans man while all the other polycule members are cis, and whenever he has a kid he just throws it out into the world so it can become a newsie, Katherine was the exception but then she learns that she’s siblings/half siblings with a large number of the newsies and she invites them all to family dinner and it’s chaos

I love this question sm!

I always headcanon kath as having a really nice citrusy perfume, because I feel like she wouldn’t go for a bland sort of vanilla/flowery thing. her personality is sharp and independent and I’m p sure her perfume choices would match

modern au kath is pretty easy— any citrus perfume but probably something more subtle

canon era kath would probably be a bit different since most perfumes around the turn of the century were aimed towards specific flowers. I think she’d be an orange blossom girly.

Random Newsies Headcannons!!! (I’m bored and I know some of these are popular in the fandom but i’ll share anyway)

- Davey is autistic and Jack has ADHD (mostly attention issues)

- Katherine has ADHD (manly hyperactivity issues) and she gets really really excited when talking about something she loves and the newsies love it

- Race is a slut /pos

- Davey swears a lot (he deserves to) and has to beg Les to not tell on him.

- Crutchie has an obvious crush on Jack and really looks up to him but never tells him and the crush eventually goes away as he gets older

- Ralbert forever 🫡

- Les has said fuck and he’s really proud of that but too scared to do it again

- Davey is a heavy sleeper

- Jack used to be a heavy sleeper but since he’s basically a mom to the newsies he wakes up at every sound

- Les says every thought that comes to his little brain

- Les has called Wiesel ugly and weird and the newsies encourage him

- The Jacobs’ are Jewish

- Davey is a bitch at heart

- Crutchie doesn’t like Davey at first because of how close he gets with Jack

- Katherine and Davey are besties

- Every newsie is some form of queer because i said so (not counting Les he is 9), but here are some specifics:

Headcanons:

- Cannot remember all the newsies names. Soon as she remembers someone, she forgets someone else. She even forgot Jack's name once (she's working on remembering everyone)

- The class divide is painfully obvious at times, but she makes an effort to educate herself further on things like disabilities and other cultures so as to better interact with the boys

- Great with the younger newsies. Buttons in particular likes taking with her, as they discuss things like fashion and where she gets her outfits fitted

- Things aren't romantic between her and Jack, but they're certainly very close friends
