Official observations of Finland’s 106th Independence Day began at 9am Wednesday with a flag-raising ceremony on Tähtitorni Hill in Helsinki's Ullanlinna district.
Hoisting the Finnish flag in bright, cold weather were members of a YMCA scout troop from Rastila, eastern Helsinki, accompanied with singing by the Viipurin Lauluveikot. The male choir was founded in 1897 in Vyborg, which is now part of Russia.
Delivering a speech at this year’s flag ceremony was Speaker of Parliament Jussi Halla-aho (Finns).
Independence Day commemorates December 6, 1917, when the Finnish Parliament approved a declaration of independence from Russia that had been issued by the Senate. Finland had been a Grand Duchy under the Russian Empire since 1809. The Senate was led by Pehr Evind Svinhufvud, who became the republic’s third president in the 1930s.
At 10.30, President Sauli Niinistö laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Helsinki's Hietaniemi Cemetery, followed by Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen (NCP) and the Defence Forces Commander, Gen. Timo Kivinen.
The annual Independence Day parade began in Oulu at noon, organised by the Finnish Army's Kainuu Brigade, which is based in Kajaani.
The parade view from the Raatti Stadium and the march past the Merikoski Bridges at 1pm were broadcast live on Yle channels, while a compilation of the highlights shown later.
Disruption at ecumenical service
Niinistö also took part in a traditional ecumenical service at Helsinki's Lutheran Cathedral at noon. The Lutheran Bishop of Oulu, Jukka Keskitalo, delivered the sermon, and a prayer was read in the indigenous North Sámi language.
Pastor Kari Kanala said in a social media post that the service was briefly disrupted by some attendees seated in an upper loft.
"Palestinian flags, a peace song, etc. I don't know what to think. In any case, we are here praying for peace anyway," he posted on X, adding that the disturbance only lasted for about a minute.
Helsinki Police Chief Commissioner Patrik Karlsson confirmed the incident to Yle. He said that 10 people participated in the protest, dropping two banners expressing support for Palestine from the loft. Police removed two people from the event, telling them they could continue their demonstration outdoors.
Police said they have received notifications of four other demonstrations later in the day, including two that were scheduled to begin at 4pm. A traditional university students' torchlight procession was to begin an hour later.
Sibelius and a TV gala
Beginning at 3pm, the Radio Symphony Orchestra offered an Independence Day concert from the Helsinki Music Centre. Featuring works by Finnish composers Magnus Lindberg, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Jean Sibelius, was broadcast live on Yle Teema and Areena, and at 7pm on Yle Radio 1.
The day culminates in the annual ball at the Presidential Palace, which starts at 7pm.
Niinistö and his spouse, Jenni Haukio, host the reception for the 10th and final time. They have hosted it annually since he took office in 2012 except in 2020-21, when it was cancelled due to the pandemic, replaced by modest virtual events. In 2013, the event was held in Tampere as the Presidential Palace was under renovation.
Voting for Niinistö’s successor begins just over a month from now.
The TV and online broadcast of the gala is typically Finland's most-watched media event of the year, sometimes attracting more than 2.5 million viewers.

1986 Demri as the cover/poster girl of Kit's Cameras when attending the Lakewood High School.
💬: "Demri moved around to different high schools in the 80’s. I was friends with her when she briefly attended Lakewood High School in Arlington, WA. She and I were both members of the newspaper and yearbook staff... She enjoyed photography. She was working at the Everett Mall in Everett, WA in 1988 where and when she introduced me and a friend to Layne. I can’t remember how she told us they met, since I remember being a little taken aback by this tall, lanky, long haired rocker guy with tiny beautiful Demri. I remember her looking at him in complete adoration as she introduced us to him and told us he was going to be a huge rock star someday. She constantly smiled and had something to laugh about. There is a picture of her in the 1986? Lakewood Jr/Sr High yearbook that I took, of her peeking out from behind a camera, but I think it is not labeled with her name...".
💬 Lyle Forde, Arlington High School choir teacher: “She really did love music and the performing arts. She definitely had the bent toward the performing arts and was very social. She was a competent singer, but I think she also was a dancer”.
💬 Karie Pfeiffer-Simmons: “l was one of Demri Murphy's best friends until she dropped out of high school her junior year. We went to Arlington High School... She loved to be center stage, could make herself cry instantly, just as an act. We would sing songs and put on shows pretending we were on stage, and dress up a lot.
There is a song I remember always singing. It was “Leather and Lace. I would sing the girl role and she would sing the guy. She was funny.
“She liked to be a class clown, get attention, and joke around.

I DIDN'T EXPECT YOU TO DRAW THEM BUT THEY ALL LOOK SO PRETTY
QSMP GODDESS MY BELOVEDS
I still stand by my statement of wanting to eat your art
I'm so positively obsessed with your art style
YOU DREW MINE EXATCLY HOW IMAGINED HER:D
Oh yeah, and that detail with the wither rose on Kristin's hat, I've forgotten about them lol but yeah, it looks cool
But Kari as a faceless goddess is so cool, everytime I tried to think of a desing it would be like... Her face wouldn't be seen, like something covering her face in shadows(like bbh hoodie) or hidden by... I dunno, mist? So I think it fits
But your Cellbit's discord desing is so good, it fits so well
Imagine you solving a enigma only to see something out of the corner of your eye and just saying that thing behind you being like: "enigma? 👉 👈"
I wasn't sure on how they would've looked but I've been imagining constant whispers, like, they are never silent, there's aways low whispers of a lot of things and they voice would sound like a choir of chaos wich you can't separate a voice from another, like they are only one at the same time they are many separate beings
- 🍽️
poor bagi she finds her brother only to find out about all his horrors PLUS this weird deity who follows him around and probably loves emigmas/puzzles more then he does ù-ú
YEAAAH i imagine it’s like a bunch of overlapping voices but they’re all usually saying the same thing to you but if you focused more you’d realize it’s like a BILLION a voices not just the one. cellbit discord is like one thousand guys in a trench coat MKANSKMDK

Feelings about purely instrumental music? I got into it by way of listening to enough video game OSTs that lyrical music now feels like a genre I have to like, break into. Interesting because for most people alive today, music inherently includes lyrics and meaning derived from them.
I got into music in general through instrumental music, really. Two Steps from Hell, Audiomachine, and Really Slow Motion are still some of my most commonly listened to artists.
Those three belong to a niche category of artist that basically makes music for trailers. Like, movie trailers. You have almost certainly heard Audiomachine's music before, if you haven't been living under a rock. (No shade if you do, in fact, live under a rock. Sounds like an ideal way to live in this day and age.)
Two Steps from Hell became popular enough early on among regular people who just, enjoyed their songs, to switch over to primarily making music for regular human listeners, rather than movie trailers. They are truly an experience, and do things like introduce dubstep and electric guitar solos into what otherwise sounds like a "classical" orchestral track.
Other good artists that roughly fall within this category include Valentin Weist, BrunuhVille, Twisted Jukebox, Kari Sigurdsson, and City of the Fallen.
Shit i'm going to have to make a detailed list of recs huh.
Two Steps from Hell...okay. I'm going to focus on them because TSFH really was what introduced me to how powerful music could be to just wreck your shit body and soul. Their music is epic as in "gives you full-body chills and makes you feel like a god" transcendent.
Compared with most of the others, TSFH is a lot more varied both in tone and in just...the range of weird stuff that they do. Some of their songs are completely unique sounding and impossible to compare to anything else.
ok all right just bear with me
"epic" adventurous dragon riding with dual wielding laser swords: High C's, Clock Tower Parade, Never Give Up On Your Dreams, Flight of the Silverbird, Victory, Realm of Power, Impossible, Fall of the Fountain World, Skulls and Trombones, Norwegian Pirate, Color the Sky
Narrative/character sketch stuff: Blackheart, Caradhras, Dangerous* (*has lyrics!)
Tour de force through a Realm: Amaria/Welcome to Amaria (same song, released twice under diff names), Big Sky, Science, Starfall, Phantom
Dramatic Dark Tunes For Villainy: Chase the Light, Queen of Crows, The Raven Talks Backwards, Stormkeeper, Breath of Cold Air, 1000 Ships of the Underworld, Asimov
what the FUCK is this aka songs that transcend normal categorization more than usual: Casablanca, Future Fortress, Lost in Las Vegas, All is Hell that Ends Well, Replicate, Winterspell
Nothing prepares you for realizing that TSFH has hundreds of songs and somehow almost every single one of them is the best song you've ever heard and compels you to listen to it over and over again. It's madness.
There is no way to fully describe Two Steps from Hell. "Genre" is as dust sifting through frail mortal fingertips to them. You will listen to dark orchestral Viking EDM dubstep pirate metal with Latin choir and you will FUCKING LIKE IT.

Okay so this is so far out of the purview of your blog but… do you know any good Norwegian folk music?
I found this song which I REALLY like (I hope it linked?) and I’ve used the usual routes for similar artists but not found anything satisfying. I wouldn’t normally ask a random person but you are the only interactable Norwegian person I know of (other than Magnus Carlsen but I don’t trust his taste in music).
It doesn’t have to be necessarily like this song, just some nice folk music that maybe is based on traditional songs and actually sung in Norwegian? Thanks either way!
Not only did you come to the right place but you also just about killed me. "Other than Magnus Carlsen" pfffffffffffft.
For what it's worth I don't trust his taste in music either.
Right then, this is very exciting because I happen to be a big fan of traditional music. I'll give you all that comes to mind.
Kråkevisa, a folk song about a man who shoots a ridiculously large crow and then all the ways he puts it to use. For instance, its beak is made a boat.
Håvard Hedde, a folk song about a man in love with a woman who sets about to build a farm so he'll be able to provide for them in their matrimony. He takes so long that by the time the farm is done she's married to someone else.
Astrid, mi Astrid, a folk song about two lovers who are completely sick of each other. They break up and find themselves much better partners, only to find that they can't stay away from each other.
Pål sine høner, a folk song about a boy whose chickens all run away and he's scared to tell his mom.
youtube
Herre Jesus, gi meg nåde, a psalm with unknown folk origins about how life is difficult but there is strength and hope to be found in the Lord.
Olav og Kari, or Hekserittet, a medieval ballad about a man whose mother falsely tells him his wife is a witch. He kills his wife, who arrives in heaven and pleads to Virgin Mary that Olav and his mother be forgiven for their actions. Mary informs her that Olav acted in good faith and may enter heaven, his mother will not because she was a liar. Pretty sure the linked version isn't a complete one, but Olav and Kari are extremely common Norwegian names so I'm not getting a lot of serious results.
youtube
Draumkvedet, the most known medieval ballad of them all. Title translates to "the song of a dream", and is about Olav who fell asleep for 13 days and dreamt of what awaits us in death.
Anything Sissel Kyrkjebø, but to start you off: her opening the Olympics in Lillehammer in 1994.
youtube
Uti vår hage, about how great it is to go outside.
There's also Landkjenning, but I can't find a version with mixed choirs. All-men choir song is beautiful, love a good all-men choir, but I like Landkjenning with sopranos. That, and I've run out of links.

In eighth grade, Demri ran for student body president. She won by a landslide – the teachers stopped counting the ballots after she was leading her closest competitor by more than three hundred votes. After a few months, she was removed from the position by the faculty because she had fallen behind on her schoolwork. [1]
Mona: “My favorite memory of Demri would be sitting next to her in class in High School. The funny things she’d say... Then here came that great big smile of hers, her eyes would light up and she’d laugh. It was contagious for sure. I loved her light and energy. Such a sweetheart.” [4]
In May of 1983, Demri was one of twelve students to represent Arlington at Western Washington Cultural Fair. She was mentioned as one of the participants in The Arlington Times newspaper.
“On Thursday afternoon at the Seattle Center will be held the first ever Western Washington Cultural Fair, and Arlington will be represented in more ways than one. Twelve students, the best from Arlington annual Cultural Fair held last fall, will represent this community at the state event.” [2]
Demri won a state prize for a project about alcohol and drugs that she had put together for a cultural fair at the middle school.
For source material, she approached her mother, who had been a practicing counselor working in the addiction field since 1976. Demri borrowed a display case from Austin’s office, which had fake samples of different types of drugs and a film. In retrospect, Austin said, “If anybody had ever told me that my daughter would become a heroin addict, I wouldn’t have believed it.”
Hubbard-Mills remembers that exhibit, saying Demri had put it together for the cultural fair at the middle school. It was so well received that it was eventually shown at the high school. “This is when Demri was happy, would hang out for lunch. This is when she thought people doing drugs would die.” She and other friends from Arlington say Demri had tried marijuana and mushrooms by the time she was in high school.[1]
Demri’s interests and ambitions at the time were in the arts. “I know that she wanted to be in acting and I know that she wanted to be an actress and be in movies”, Pfeiffer-Simmons said. “She had to be in the limelight.” Lyle Forde, Demri’s high school choir teacher, said, “She really did love music and the performing arts. She definitely had the bent toward the performing arts and was very social. Some students, they don’t really go up and talk to teachers. They kind of hang with their friends. She was social with other students and their teachers. She was a competent singer, but I think she also was a dancer.” [1]
Demri tried out for soccer but was too small for her age, she did plays (played Tin Man), and was in a choir.
Melissa Bumgarner: “Demri was an absolute angel and not one mean bone in her body. She always was smiling and never had anything bad to say about anyone ever. Heart of gold. She was a gift, a friend and a true sister. I miss our days in her garage in Arlington that she turned into her own little stage with boxes and boxes of clothes props and of course that camera she never let down. We were always roleplaying. We would do Saturday Night Live skits. We were the same size and we both had the same cute little butt in our 501 Levi’s jeans.” [2]
Moya Grubbs: “Thanks for the great memories, fun bus rides home from school and countless hours of hanging in your room/garage being teenagers with dreams! We lived close to each other and went to high school together. We spent a lot of time together after school. She was a vibrant soul. Quirky and funny. We even had a fight once at school and I slapped her in the face in front of a bunch of our classmates. We remained friends tho. We were crazy girls full of life, love and hormones.” [2]
Karie Pfeiffer-Simmons: “l was one of Demri Murphy’s best friends until she dropped out of high school her junior year. We went to Arlington High School. She was very tiny. Petite, not over 5 ft. Dark hair, very fair skin. Her eyes were a really cool blueish color and would change colors when she cried. She wore very light make-up all through school. She was sexually active early in age and would give us girls lessons on ‘how to’. She loved to be center stage, could make herself cry instantly, just as an act. We would sing songs and put on shows pretending we were on stage, and dress up a lot. There is a song I remember always singing. It was ‘Leather and Lace.’ I would sing the girl role and she would sing the guy. She was funny. Loved to make things up and freak our teachers out to distract them, class clown! We were both latchkey kids. Our parents always worked late. She lived with her mom and brother across the street from Arlington High School. We would go over there and skip classes. Once she took her mom’s cooking basil I remember trying to smoke it in 7th grade, she was in 8th, it was funny! Everything she did was with a smile and light-hearted. We would make up little phrases and sayings that no one else knew what it ment. She was always about teasing and the shock factor.” [2]
Rhonda Lundquist: “I had the pleasure of meeting Demri when she was in high school, we became instant friends. I was very sad when she moved to Seattle to pursue a modeling career, but she was the most beautiful girl ever and the world deserved to see such beauty! She had such a majestic soul.” [2]
