10k | Haiji & Fujioka, Haiji/Kakeru | Police/Yakuza AU, Undercover Missions, Loyalty
Haiji knows how to be Agent Kiyose. He knows how to be Kiyose-san. He was both of those people for decades before he was ever called Haiji-san. He was someone else for his entire life before he was Haiji-san for a year.
one thing to know about me is that i'm so, so compelled by the fujioka and haiji and kakeru dynamic. i love the way fujioka represents haiji's past and kakeru represents haiji's future, and i loooooove forcing haiji to choose between the two. thematically, this fic is about trying to fit into a place you no longer fit in, and outgrowing your best friend, and finding the kind of devotion worth killing for. practically, this is about my unavoidable urge to give some college boys guns

ahhhhh kakehai for 15 (things you said with too many miles between us) please!!
craaaaaaaaaaaaaab hi!!! everyday i appreciate you for encouraging my kakehai writing!! here are some words about haiji and kakeru and shoelaces, ten years after canon.
(from the things you said prompts)
Haiji nearly drops the plate he's washing when he hears it.
Even the interviewer, it seems, is surprised enough to cough onscreen and say with open curiosity, "Really, Kurahara-san? Shoelaces?"
But Kakeru turns to look seriously at the camera and says, "It's true. The way I lace my shoes is the same way my college track captain used to. I made him sit down with me, the afternoon of his graduation ceremony, just to show me.” He laughs, and to Haiji’s ears he sounds wistful. “I wonder what he thought of that.”
Haiji had forgotten, but he remembers it now — the cherry blossoms in Kakeru’s hair, the unbearably blue sky. The way his hands had trembled when he’d leant over to tie the knot with Kakeru’s laces. How absolutely certain Haiji had been, in that moment, that there was nothing between them to start.
Onscreen, Kakeru is smiling at the camera, an unexpected curl to his mouth. "I wouldn't be anywhere near here if I hadn't met him. I truly believe that joining the Kansei ekiden team changed the course of my life.” He ducks his chin. The tips of his ears are pink, even in the studio lighting. "Anyway. I owe him a lot. I suppose the lacing was, selfishly, a way to keep him in my life after he left running."
"There you have it," the interviewer says. "Kurahara Kakeru, Japanese national team marathon runner, on the greatest influences of his running life.”
“Thank you very much,” Kakeru says, bobbing politely. Haiji can’t tear his eyes from the screen. A way to keep him in my life after he left running.
The interviewer continues, “Kurahara-san’s college running career culminated in running Section 10 of the Hakone ekiden three years in a row, breaking his previous record each time. Kurahara-san will be one of our guest broadcasters for this year’s ekiden, please be sure to tune in next week to catch his segment!”
The show cuts to commercial and Haiji lunges for his phone. Even as he's dialing he has no idea what he'll say, and no idea how long ago this segment was filmed, only that he can't just — leave that said without a response.
There's a thirteen hour drive between them, but he can close it with a call.
The line clicks over to voicemail. Kakeru's voice — Haiji's heart thuds — says, dry and rote, "It's Kurahara Kakeru. Please leave a message."
"Kakeru," Haiji says. It's been years since he addressed Kakeru by name. He’s always Kurahara-san when he comes up in the newsroom at work.
Haiji doesn’t know what to say next. His university self would have found a way to just — start talking, shrouding the truth in layers of misdirection, discovering what he meant to say midway through and talking in circles until it was hidden again. But now, a decade later, he just wants to get to the point.
“I saw your interview,” Haiji says. He chews at the inside of his cheek, and adds, “I remembered you asking me to teach you how I tie my racing shoes. Only after you said it, though.” He paces a slow circle in his kitchen. It’s easier to say this, knowing that Kakeru will only hear it later. “I don’t know your racing schedule, but … if your season brings you here to Fukuoka, I would like to meet up, or — dinner, perhaps, if you would like. I’ve mi—”
The line clicks again and for a moment Haiji thinks he's run out of time. But then, a breath over the line and Kakeru's voice, worried, says, "Is this ... Haiji-san? Is something wrong?"
Of course he’d think that. They’ve barely texted in the decade since Haiji’s graduation. Calling like this…
“Nothing’s wrong,” Haiji says. “I’m sorry to call you so suddenly. I — I watched your interview. The teaser for the ekiden broadcast.”
“Oh,” Kakeru says. A surprised little laugh. “Really?”
“I watch most of your interviews,” Haiji admits. “This time, I just wanted to—” This had been so much easier without Kakeru on the other line. “I remembered, after you said it. When you asked me to show you how I laced my racing shoes.”
“Ah,” Kakeru says. He sounds embarrassed.
Haiji almost says: I didn’t think there was something between us, then. I thought it was just me. “I was happy to do it,” Haiji says instead, as firmly as he knows how. “It made me happy that you asked.” It’s been years. The circumstances have changed. They’ll be different people, when they meet again.
“Come to the team reunion this year, Haiji-san,” Kakeru says. Haiji can hear the tentative smile in his voice. He presses his phone closer to his ear to hear Kakeru add, “It hasn’t been the same without you there.”
The rush of wind outside Haiji’s apartment window. The feeling of a new beginning rising in his chest.
“I’ll be there, Kakeru,” Haiji says. “I’ve missed you.”

Seize the Chance
Rating: T 💛
Summary:
Kakeru knows he’s awkward, poor at social cues (getting better, though), tragically unfunny, has trouble keeping his emotions in check. His teammates all know that about him, too. They accept all those things about him, which is great, and he’s forever thankful.
But who could actually manage to develop a crush on that combination of dysfunction?
He looks at Haiji. Haiji beams back at him, and Kakeru swallows, looking away.
--
Haiji thinks someone in Aotake might have a crush on Kakeru. Kakeru has absolutely no idea who it could be
My thoughts:
Refreshing when someone is able to capture how insane Haiji is. This is really cute and feels like it fits right into canon and Haiji is so so Haiji, love it.

“It Was Always You”
It was as if Kakeru finally woke up from a dream, a beautiful, too good to be true dream. The encounter with Sakaki at the training camp dumped a bucket of cold water on his head.
Kakeru was wide awake.

Tobio asking him "Have you kissed Haiji yet?" takes Kakeru by surprise when they're alone in the kitchen, washing dishes after dinner that evening.
He fumbles with the plate he's holding and ends up dropping it into the sink full of sudsy water, sending up a mini-geyser and splashing them both. Tobio hollers something unintelligible at him as Kakeru clutches the edge of the sink and shakes with laughter at his outrage.
"Aren't you holding them properly?" Tobio barks, like there's some kind of universally agreed upon method to handling a dish while it's being rinsed.

In the spring following his first year at Kansei, Kakeru visits his family in Miyagi for the first time since he was a child. He's got a lot of worries over facing the upcoming year now that Haiji has graduated—but it turns out that makes him the perfect person to help his cousin Tobio understand his own feelings for a certain sunny teammate. [A RWTW/Haikyuu crossover fic.]

wip wednesday
“What, exactly, is it you think I’m planning, Nico-chan?” Haiji counters. When he reaches out to push the gun the slightest bit across the table, he’s surprised his hand isn’t shaking. He feels wild inside, uncontrolled, his heart rattling in his chest. Haiji’s thinking about the look on Kakeru’s face after their first firefight side-by-side, both of them cleaning out their guns in the parlor of the main house. The room silent except for the sound of oiled cloth on metal, the mechanical sounds of a gun being reassembled. He’s thinking about the look on Kakeru’s face when Haiji’s gun came together, and the kick in his own chest like a recoil when he’d asked, You like it? and Kakeru, thrumming with adrenaline, had answered, It’s beautiful, Haiji-san. He’s thinking that handing Kakeru a gun that had never been fired by anyone Haiji trusted would be just as close to leaving Kakeru to die as meeting Kakeru empty-handed, or not meeting him at all.
aaaaaaaaa draft 3 has been handed over to my beta (MWAH) and now it's all uphill from here! some of the stuff i've done in this fic i am genuinely ... shocked by how interesting it is to me. i think it's really gonna be good y'all.

its so interesting as im writing narrative!fic the way that each subsequent draft / outline gets me closer and closer to a version of the fic that is ... true to the original conception? like i started gathering notes and ideas for this fic in earnest in ... 2021, like spring/summer 2021 and only today have finally put together an outline that FEELS like i am really, really close.
actually it's not even an outline it is a bunch of bulletpoint freewriting in a google doc that is roughly in the order of the series of events in the fic. i made a note to clean it into an outline later. but ohhh my god i finally!
like its been literally 4 drafts, i am slightly frightened to count how many words of draft material (probably about 60k give or take 15-20k), but THIS outline! i finally have the throughline of haiji's character arc through the fic, i've finally like .... idk. pared it down to the core parts and they magically (throug the power of thinking about this fic near-constantly since 2021) fit together now. THANK FUCK!
i told my old roommate i would send them a completed draft to beta like. two years ago.
i still don't know how this fucking fic ends but i have OPTIONS that probably will all require drafting out and revising before i pick sigh. but ohhhhhhhh my god this has NOT BEEN FUN but it is SO REWARDING to finally fucking hit (for like the third time) the feeling of "oh okay. i figured another thing out about how this story is going to work. it's going to come together now."
admittedly i said that to myself the last several times but THIS TIME I FIGURED OUT THE JOURNALING AND HAIJI'S WHOLE CHARACTER ARC and there is CAUSATION AND EVERYTHING which there sure was not before ahahaha. god this time i figured out the journaling!!!
and yes this is uhhhhhhhhhh an incredibly personal reading of haiji, i truly feel that my irl friends will kind of squint knowingly. but ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh A MILESTONE!
a milestone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KAKEHAI/HAIKAKE FIC RECS LIST
God this is so very modest, but I spend the last few days doing almost nothing but crying over these boys so you have to join me
Laser focus by canadino / au / pg13 / What might have happened if Haiji was a year older.
compliance by ApatheticListlessness / fluff / g / It was hard trying to ignore Kiyose when he was just.... there.By there Kakeru means smiling in the kitchen as he cooks, by there Kakeru means when Kiyose greets them good morning, by there Kakeru means when Kiyose would say hi to him whenever they see each other on campus, by there Kakeru means——
distraction by quitea / fluff / pg / The last thing he needs is Haiji to be a distraction.
forget-me-not by quitea / fluff / pg13 / Kakeru doesn’t want to believe it as more flower petals pile up in his lap, but he’s convinced he has what he think he’s infected with.
without a doubt by quitea / humor / pg13 / five times they think kakeru and haiji are dating, and the one time they should have simply asked.
not a proposal by limesicle / fluff / g / “Would you say ‘yes’ if I asked you to marry me?” Haiji asks, sounding so casual, he may as well be asking about the weather.
drunk  by limesicle / humor / pg / The first time Kakeru gets drunk, things get...interesting.
Start of Something by canadino / fluff / g/ They get together.
steam by lacksley / smut / nc-17 / Haiji had been watching him all day. That wasn’t too out of the ordinary, but Kakeru could tell that this was… different. Haiji wasn’t watching him like a coach, or a friend, or a teammate. He was watching like he wanted something, like he was planningsomething. A late-night foray into intimacy.
Run (To The End of the World) by Spoonfulofhoney / fluff / r /  "Kakeru was always running, he was always out of his grasp but right now, right now he had him and he didn't feel like letting go. He didn't want to be selfish, but he couldn’t let this chance pass him by. He wasn't going to be left behind again."
it takes a very long time to become soft. by amaanogawa / fluff / g / The stars are beautiful tonight, Haiji had told him that night during the training camp—he wonders if Kakeru had noticed that he hadn’t really been looking at the sky at all.
Low Road/High Road by ac_123 / angst, fluff / pg / To get to the top of a mountain, you must start at its base.
of chocolates and awkwardness by euphemea / fluff / g / Kakeru can’t quite believe that he’s here, hesitating in front of Haiji’s door with a lurid, pink bag filled with store-bought chocolate, hand half-raised to knock.
let me be the light upon the lake by groundcover / fluff / pg / Haiji puts a ring of not-so mysterious intent on it.
a handful of hugs by euphemea / fluff / pg / haiji and kakeru, moments in growing affection
As Long as You're There by lacksley / fluff, angst / pg /  When you need it most, In the dark, in the dead of the night.  It's the night before qualifiers, and he can't sleep.
open, sesame by tsuruko / fluff / pg / Kakeru remembers the first time Haiji asked him to assist in making dinner for their teammates—he remembers the tension bouncing between them, still unsure of Haiji, and unsure of himself in Haiji’s presence, remembers the tiptoeing he did to avoid conversation for more than a few moments at a time, his short answers, subdued sounds of acknowledgement in response. Haiji was always friendly, but even then, Kakeru bristled.
only for the wild at heart by jfiacre / smut / nc-17 / Kakeru has never imagined his first time— much less any first time, on his knees bent across the tatami floor, muffling a moan as Haiji’s fingers works him open in the quiet hours of Aotake.
Recharge by Gilrael / fluff / g / Haiji comes home after a rough day and sees his boyfriend wearing his clothes.
forward, instead of from by hellodeer / fluff, angst / g / Here’s what Kakeru notices when he’s running:The wind against his face. The people in front of him and, when there are none, the road in front of him. His feet, one in front of the other, leaving the ground and coming back down again. His heart beating loud in his ears. His steady breathing: in, out, in, out, out, out, out.
easy on the sugar by jfiacre / humor / pg13 / Yuki knows he’s not going to win the award for year’s best senpai. He’s not doting like Shindou nor is he supportive like Musa. If anything, he’s more of the annoying older brother type, the ones that keep you in line and away from trouble. He’s a fourth year student majoring in law and the senpai of Kurahara Kakeru and Yuki will be damn if he lets some sleazebag gets his hands on Kakeru. Or five times Yuki thinks Kakeru has a sugar daddy and the one time he finds out the truth.
the winged sandals on a god's feet by erzi / fluff / g / The desire to run had never stopped humming at Haiji's nerve endings, but with Kakeru it roars anew, beginning a chain reaction from inside out: molecules docking, cells signaling, muscles contracting; the intricacies of his body mechanics result in an explosion of energy. When Kakeru is there, always ahead, that energy is so very amplified that Haiji isn't sure he can physically keep up with his ambition. Running grounds him, but how he wants to fly alongside Kakeru.

you were watching me as i talked about salvation, searching for the afterimage of longing between my teeth
read on ao3
fandom: kazetsuyo / rwtw major: kakeru/haiji, post-canon, rated G notes: side musa/shindou, side nicoyuki, nira/belly rub from haiji, pining: the novella
What happens After Hakone, as recorded by Musa Kamala:
1) They go back to Aotake. Haiji goes to the hospital. 2) They resume regular classes. Kakeru almost makes the cut but tries to drink detergent instead of tap water and gets quarantined for a day. Yuki is hopped up on painkillers and quarantined for a week. Haiji is checked into the hospital indeterminately. 3) Haiji gets discharged from the hospital. 4) Joji asks Kakeru a question about love. Haiji’s charming presence is missed at the hospital. 5) Haiji leaves (not for the hospital).
