Happiest of birthdays to my dear Lark (@themorninglark but tumblr won’t let me tag you properly because it is A BIRTHDAY GRINCH). I'm quite sure your day has been as amazing as you, and tbh it’s well-deserved! (ʃƪ˘⌣˘) ♡

Apparently, Konoha has decent tastes in dance-y music, Akaashi thinks from the corner he’s stubbornly planted himself in. Upbeat songs are blasting from Konoha’s phone, turned up to the highest volume, and most of the team members and even the managers from Nekoma, Fukuroudani, Shinzen, Ubugawa, and Karasuno are dancing in the middle of the cafeteria, with all the tables and chairs pushed to the side. They had just finished dinner, and Akaashi has no idea how this impromptu dance party happened, but it’s happening, and—well, whatever. As long as his team members don’t hurt themselves dancing too erratically (he wouldn’t put it past them), Akaashi sees no reason to be a killjoy.

(Bokuto and Kuroo have both tried to physically drag Akaashi into dancing with everyone else, and Akaashi had glared them into giving up, but he’s not counting those.)

Akaashi’s scrolling through his phone, when someone sits down in a slightly huffy heap beside him. He doesn’t even turn his head.

“No comments from you about not dancing to J Soul Brothers,” says Kenma, a warning. A smile twitches at the corners of Akaashi’s lips.

“I saw Kuroo-san and Yamamoto trying to make you dance,” says Akaashi. “I honestly thought one of them was going to die.”

“Too much effort.”

“Fair.”

“I will never understand how they get all that energy. We’ve been training all day.” Kenma pulls out his PSP and opens it with a tired sigh.

“Well, I guess it’s not all bad,” says Akaashi, watching Bokuto and Sarukui start a conga line. “If they tire themselves out, it might be easier to sleep tonight. Would you like to go sit outside?”

“I just got comfortable,” says Kenma, thumbs flying over his PSP’s buttons with ease. “But maybe if they try getting us to join in again.”

“All right.”

But they last maybe fifteen seconds before Bokuto starts to steer the conga line towards them with a gleefully manic look in his eyes. Akaashi and Kenma practically bolt for the exit.

“I got my hopes up,” says Akaashi dryly, once they’re safely outside. Kenma just makes a disgruntled noise in his throat.

“It’s not that I’m surprised, but I always forget how noisy the training camps are.”

Akaashi glances over at him with raised eyebrows and a tiny smile on his face. “And yet, I’ve seen you at every one.”

“Only because Kuro would never give me a moment of peace ever again, otherwise.” They sit down on the stairs leading into one of the gymnasiums, and Akaashi feels a flicker of gratitude towards Kuroo; it’s nice to have company to sit out the training camps’ crazier antics with.

It’s breezy outside, but it’s still warm and humid. Mixed with the soft screeching of the summer night’s insects, the dance party’s music is muffled in the short distance, and Akaashi’s slightly surprised the coaching staff hasn’t told them off for getting carried away already, before remembering Nekomata-sensei had hauled all the adults off to have drinks nearby.

Everything is reasonably normal and routine, in other words. He doesn’t mind this at all.

He realises that he is tapping his foot to the music, and stops. And then—

“Would you like to dance?” Akaashi says.

Kenma continues playing his PSP for another moment, but when he blinks twice, Akaashi knows he’s listening.

“With you?” Kenma asks at last.

“I guess,” Akaashi answers.

There’s another moment of silence before Kenma finally pauses his game, and then raises his head and looks out before them in an almost pensive manner.

“Not right now,” he says slowly. “But… another day, maybe. When we’re less tired.”

“And it’s less hot.”

“And we’re not playing what Konoha’s playing.”

“Maybe something slow.”

“Mm. That does sounds okay.”

Akaashi smiles softly and resumes scrolling through his phone; Kenma returns to his game without another word. But now, he leans towards him a little, and Akaashi mimics him until they’re pressed against each other, tired but comfortable. Akaashi begins tapping his foot to whatever song is on now, and he notices Kenma doing the same thing. Perhaps, in their own way, this is a sort of dance as well.

Or something. Either way, it’s a lovely night. He doesn’t mind this at all.

the ground all around, it was always holy by themorninglark: really beautiful pre ts dimitri character study from claude’s perspective. the writing in this fic is stunning, and the development of their relationship is so compelling and wonderful. this one sort of breaks my heart but it’s not sad the writing just kind of makes me ache a bit.

dreams, they’re for those who sleep by longboyzone: really intimate moment near the end of white clouds that really captured me. i’ve reread this one a lot and i think abt it. also features gentle dmcl. would recommend the other two one shots by this author as well. they’re all really good

celestially written by aetherae: this fic is so good to me i’m obsessed with it? the whole series actually. it just hits so many dmcl buttons for me but basically it’s a joint route vw/am fic where claude takes the hit for dimitri after gronder rather than rodrigue. except like instead of being abt any of that it’s like 13k of people gossiping abt when dmcl is actually gonna get together and it’s. so. good. the outsider pov dmcl in this one just hits idk what else to say. they also have a bunch of other dmcl fics i’ve read that are really good but they’ve written like 30+ fe fics so i’d say just check their profile out!

lion in the mist by trilies: this fic has really stuck so me since i first read it probably because it’s so unique? this has claude (+ the deer) coming across dimitri midskip while traveling to fraldarius. i really love how both dimitri and claude are handled in this fic, idk you can tell the author is handling them both deliberately and with care? and the atmosphere this fic creates is really fantastic. they also are rather prolific so i’d check out their page as well. bc they have so much good dmcl

wear your colours by metallic_sweet: okay i said i wouldn’t do anything you could find on the first few pages of the ao3 tag but this was my first joint route fic and it lives in my heart for a lot of reasons. honest to god some of the best fe3h world building i’ve read in a fic like fodlan feels like a place here that contains 3 nations with distinct cultures. also this fic really takes seriously how dark the world of fodlan truly is without making dmcl ‘darker’ than they are as well? it’s a delicate balance and they do it fantastically. has an unfinished sequel (also worth reading—the whole series is, but dmcl isn’t the focus of every fic) that breaks my heart every day.

ok for fics — i cant recommend anyone who writes the exact same way, but i promise you theyre all 100% better. my favorites off the top of my head:

a cartography of love by themorninglark is a character study on oikawa that deals with his struggle of coming to terms with his identity, how much he can love one place and still be part of another, leaving and starting something new right after high school… if i could snort this, i would, no hesitation. a masterclass on prose. a masterclass on loving a character to the point of understanding him completely. it highlights argentina and japan and loneliness and being a part of something bigger than yourself. it gave oikawa so much justice and so much gravity, his decisions much more weight, and i honestly believe themorninglark should be knighted for the kindness they’ve shown oikawa. i was screaming to my friends for hours after i read it. i felt like a cow being air shuttled to new zealand.

He’s further south of Tokyo now than he’s ever been before. He has never felt smaller. The world has never felt more incredible. <;- one of the best lines i’ve read anywhere, but it’s not even making the best line list i’ve made for this fic. (i won’t tell you my favorite because i keep that shit to myself to cry about at night :)

meg (whose account name is @star-puff, where she’s archived all her works) is a writer you can trust (let me explain later). my favorite work of hers is a tendou fic, after the world has fallen (where do we lie), with an oikawa counterpart set in the same universe, before the world fell (you were there) that follows a this post apocalyptic world that’s reduced to gang alliances. it’s completely out of the box and you’ll pull your hair out the whole time. there is no instant gratification with this girl. she’ll drag you through mud, pain, anguish etc but you know what? she’s so incredibly talented that it’s worth it. (explaining it now) her fics are what quintessentially a fic should be like for me, if that makes sense… there’s so much color in them, the descriptors are so vivid and it’s so evident that she creates every single piece of hers with so much care. i can’t explain it in any way other than that. after the world has fallen literally starts with, You meet on a day where the sky burns yellow.

i feel like i win when i lose by flooruh partly because its title is an abba lyric but mainly because i feel like everybody should read this. to write the first interaction between oikawa and atsumu and for it to be this funny and witty and accurate????? my canon. it didn’t happen any other way. a ball of sunshine of a fic. everyone should read this. the type of fic you have to read alone because your face will be making so many expressions. (i was squealing like a dipshit)

venetia by georgette heyer is romance romance. kind of jane austen, but romancier, less on the satire side of things and more on the men on top their horses and hosting their orgys in their estate etc side of things. i like reading the way they talk and exclaim for some reason. books that use exclamation >>>>

snow country by yasunari kawabata. i was reading this during writing ailments of the soul actually! it’s about a love affair between a businessman and a geisha that’s set in the snow country, and we see it start and slowly fall apart. it’s just amazing to me how someone can tell something and nothing all at once, and how kawabata trusted his readers so much he let himself write that way.

I wonder if I dreamt this or something, but does makoto ever call haru “haru-Chan” in front of people? Or is it something that he says in private or when he knows no one’s listening?

It’s a good question that I can’t 100% answer without rewatching Free! either (it’d be a good excuse to, lmao) BUT it does seem to be a name Makoto only “slips up” and uses during more personal/intimate conversations with Haru, especially once they’re older. It’s hard to tell, especially when you start to read fics where every author who writes makoharu seems to have a different opinion (ranging from Makoto using “Haru-chan” liberally to him only using Haru/Haruka). @/themorninglark (I think they’re deactivated on here now, but their meta posts still recirculate from time to time) made this wonderful post discussing Makoto’s usage and motivations to use the endearment, and I would pretty much agree with their interpretation. It’s a name that notes both their closeness and a shared childhood/nostalgia, so it makes sense that it mostly comes up when it’s just the two of them alone, moving through shared daily routines that feel as old as time. Like I said, I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure we only see it being used by Makoto when they’re mostly alone or in childhood flashbacks (the dolphin keychain scene comes to mind).
