Good Omens Fic Rec: in the house we remain
Aziraphale buys a quiet cottage in the middle of the English countryside. It is perfect in every way: old-style, quaint, surrounded by wilderness, with a small water feature in the back and a price to rival that of any other property he's seen. He is in love from the moment he sees it. But when a mysterious set of books, all written by unknown author A.J. Crowley, appears on his book shelf, Aziraphale begins to wonder if there is perhaps more to this house than he'd originally believed. The truth can be buried, but it cannot stay hidden forever.
Length: 48,334 words
AO3 Rating: Mature / Spice Level 🔥
Best for: Mostly Safe in Public, At Home, Angst, Human AU
Triggers: Major Character Death
Read it here, fic by commodorecliche
*Minor Spoilers* It's almost frustrating that this story of Aziraphale falling in love with a ghost is one of the most gripping and beautiful stories I've read. It shouldn't work this well, it should be a crack idea. But this is such a powerful piece of fiction. It seamlessly blends romance with mystery and horror. Get your tissues, settle in, this one will haunt you.
Aziraphale has just moved to a cozy cottage in the countryside. If he's hearing things, feeling weird drafts, and noticing things out of place, well, that's just him settling in. Soon, there will be no denying the strange events, and it starts with a set of unpublished books written by an AJ Crowley. The previous, deceased, owner of the house.
This is heartbreaking. It's grief pools over everything. As Aziraphale learns more about the entity who haunts his cottage you will start to grieve as well. The way they begin to communicate was so thrilling and the softest romance. On one hand, we know they're soulmates and belong together despite any obstacle. On the other, it's a tragedy and horrifying. It's gorgeous and grotesque.
It's mostly safe in public, but an at home read for me. If you were destroyed by All of Us Strangers, I think you'll want to check this out. But mind the tags and warnings, there is graphic descriptions of death and major character death. Technically a happy ending? But that's a grey area in itself. I'd love to know how you guys feel about this ending actually
Read it here, fic by commodorecliche
P.S Spoilers under the cut because I want to scream about this story so come back once you've read this
I literally started crying when Aziraphale discovers what was tucked into the attic, the way Crowley was never appreciated as an author was so painful!! Crowley's death destroyed me!! The scene of the water splashing and Aziraphale trying to save him??? Only to come inside and see him?? THE ART???? This one has got me UNWELL.
But also what a horror! Aziraphale never experiencing a full life with Crowley, never knowing the physical touch of a person for what was it 40 years?? That's both romantic and devastating.
UGH I will never get over the scene of Aziraphale watching Adam discover his body. It made my blood run cold. And how Crowley had to watch over his decaying body as well. FUCK this one is so insanely good and how can I explain that to a normie? Hm? Yeah this human au of my blorbos falling in love even though one of them is a ghost literally had me crying screaming and throwing up and this is a normal thing for me
My views on the ending? I think I lean on the horror end of the scale. Yes they are together, but stuck watching over every new owner of the house, still never getting to experience a real life together

14, 24, and 36 please!
14. Do you lend your books to people? Are people scared to borrow books from you? Do you know exactly where all your “lost” books are and which specific friend from school you haven’t seen in twelve years still possesses them? Will you ever get them back?
It's been forever since I've lent a book out but I certainly don't mind! Usually I trust those who I lend books to, and it is almost a guarantee that I'll remember what the book was about and get super excited to talk with someone about it when I see someone else reading it.
Pfft, I feel like my best friend still has a book or two of mine, which is fine. Probably have one of hers, I think - we'll trade back eventually.
24. How much prep work do you put into your stories? What does that look like for you? Do you enjoy this part or do you just want to get on with it?
I feel like it depends? More often than not, I'm not sitting down to write with the goal of writing. It just happens, which is fine with my schedule and responsibilities right now (since it's a bit hectic.) The same goes for planning - on the planter to pantser scale, I'm more so a pantser (even if I have some plant tendencies for long fic, for example.)
Like for those, long works, I do try to draft a plotline out, make a map, something that shows where I'll be headed! I'm more likely to save absolutely everything I've written about it in a separate doc, too, even if I don't use it as a just in case. I know for an old collab I did, I made character sheets for myself, notes on backstory, but it's rare overall - that kind of extra work.
I feel like I honestly wing it more often than not, but I do like sitting with something, planning things out. I enjoy it even if I don't do it as often as I need to.
36. They say to Write What You Know. Setting aside for a moment the fact that this is terrible advice... what do you know?
This is a rough question; not exactly sure what I know.
I guess, if anything even though I have trouble taking this advice myself, I know how to write the act of treasuring the present? Taking things slow and taking note of things that might not be as important as the bigger picture. I think I also know a good bit about emotions, grief, the little tells that can happen in one's body when those come up. More little things, but I think I can say I know it.
In a more general note, I also know that for what I don't know, research exists and communication, so that's always nice to lean on, too. Hope this makes sense?

Built A House In The Middle Of Your Chest
Read on Ao3
Buddie - Mature - 5k
-
“You could touch me?” Buck says, his smile is crooked and charming but a little nervous too. He pushes his face further into the cushions like he’s trying to slip through and hide beneath the fabric. Eddie has never wanted to touch someone more, and Buck is even offering, but it feels forbidden to act on it, like he’s on some prank show where the presenter will jump out and laugh at Eddie for ever thinking he could have something he wanted without shame and that sick feeling in his stomach following behind.
But Buck persists, shifting closer, “If you want, you could, wh-whenever you want, I’d like it.”
-
Or
Five times Buck and Eddie touch platonically plus one time they realise it's not platonic at all.

hi :))
I'm wondering if you have any cozy ineffable husbands human aus that kinda fit autumn? also angst with a happy ending would be nice
thanks!
Okay, these are the fics that came to mind for stories with somewhat cosy/autumnal vibes and some angst...
Acts of Prayer by Nadzieja (Series) (M-E)
Crowley is not a priest anymore, he has buried that part of his past long ago. Yet, fate brings him back to Tadfield where he'll have to confront a ghost from his past he hasn't seen in a very long time (but whose face might as well be carved onto his heart). [A Priest AU, with *a lot* of angst and a happy ending.]
is there anybody out there? by theycallmeDernhelm (E)
Welcome to the zombie apocalypse. England has been overrun by walking corpses, everything's gone to hell, and the few survivors are scattered- among them, Crowley and his 11-year-old son Warlock. When Crowley's radio signal is unexpectedly picked up by another group of survivors, he finds himself falling, in a way he never thought he'd fall again, for the charming and kindly Aziraphale. Over three seasons and a tenuous radio connection, a romance develops between them, while a friendship grows between Warlock and Aziraphale's nephew Adam. Love isn't dead (or undead) after all.
The Scarecrow by AppleSeeds (M)
The last surviving member of his family, Aziraphale inherits a crumbling 14th century cottage from his uncle. Staying in the cottage to catalogue his uncle's collection of rare books, Aziraphale combats his loneliness by speaking to the scarecrow in the neighbouring field. He awakes one night to find the scarecrow in his bedroom, mouth torn open, speaking to him... Crowley was cursed by a witch and turned into a scarecrow over five hundred years ago, but somehow Aziraphale's presence is changing him into something more human. While Aziraphale works to break the curse completely, the two of them spend a great deal of time together and find something special within each other, both discovering what it truly means to be free.
in the house we remain by commodorecliche (M)
Aziraphale buys a quiet cottage in the middle of the English countryside. It is perfect in every way: old-style, quaint, surrounded by wilderness, with a small water feature in the back and a price to rival that of any other property he's seen. He is in love from the moment he sees it. But when a mysterious set of books, all written by unknown author A.J. Crowley, appears on his book shelf, Aziraphale begins to wonder if there is perhaps more to this house than he'd originally believed. The truth can be buried, but it cannot stay hidden forever.
Under Construction by summerofspock (E)
Crowley has one goal: sell the run-down lodge in the Cascades that his uncle left him in his will. He doesn't expect to meet someone like Aziraphale, the kind handyman working on his uncle's property who turns out to be more of an enigma than Crowley first thought.
The Grindr Logo Doesn't Even Have a 'G' In It by indieninja92 (E)
After the Apocalypse, Aziraphale ventures into a new space in the gay milieu - Grindr. There he starts talking to a charming young man who certainly doesn't bear any resemblance at all to a certain long streak of demon, not one bit, no thank you. Meanwhile, Aziraphale and Crowley navigate their friendship after the world failed to end. There is much drinking and silliness, but could it be that there are other feelings lurking underneath?? Of course there are, this is fanfic.

And now i want to find myself a haunted cottage ... to find the love of my life ❤️
I just started this wonderfull gem yesterday and finished this morning. And i am so reluctant to part with it that i even consider to reread it immediately.
So if you are into Good Omens, like Human AU and searching for a kind of different plot - here are my thoughts on a wonderful fanfic from @commodorecliche !
😃 Whats it about?
Aziraphale buys a little cottage and finds some books in it, written by A.J. Crowley. Oh - and there is a ghost in the house! You will never guess who that might be ... But what might sound cheesy really is not. I so loved the authors notes that i will throw them in here:
This is a ghost story. This is a story about the remnants of ourselves we leave behind. This is a story about life and about all the things that cannot be hidden, even after we die. This is a story about finding comfort in another creature, despite the dimensional divide that might stand between us. This is a ghost story. This is a love story.
And that it is. The notes say it all!
{There are minor spoilers ahead - i tried to collect my thoughts without giving too much away, but pls only go on if you are ok with that! }
What i absolutely adore in this wunderful piece:
🤍It is a tale of love told from Aziraphale´s point of view only. Being a ghost story i had goose bumps several times during the first chapters. Nothing too scary, but quite exciting! It also has a bit of angst in it, but mostly it is deeply loving and what hurts is the fact that - well - Crowley is a ghost and Aziraphale is human. There is a natural limit to their connection. I dont want to tell more because i dont want to spoil the story. You should definitely mind the tags before you start reading!
❤️ It is a human AU but takes on a very different plot with Crowley being a ghost. So somehow this is so far unique to me in the GO-universe, where most human AU tend to put them both in the same place - be it rockstars, book sellers, teachers and parents and so on.
🤍Having a ghost and a human falling in love with each other - oh it is so sweet but also ... tragic? Having someone to love without being ever able to touch him? To barely feel him? Crowley is so well written, he is merely an essence - there and at the same time not.
🩶What i really enjoyed is that you will know every character but most of the stereotypes are left out. Anathema is not psychic (or at least it isnt mentionned) for example. There is no bickering between Aziraphale and Crowley. No sentences or dialogues from GO thrown back to the reader. Still everything blends together so well.
🖤 Oh and i loved this fact: Crowley is a writer! Crowley is the one with the words !!! and for once there is no stumbling, no "ngk", no "fuck" no nothing. Most of human AU leave Crowley with "clever hands" but words not so fluently ... (A fact that kind of surprises me often because i am not so sure every Shakespearean Text is really Shakespeare ... right? ;-))
❤️Aziraphale is happy with his body - this is something i deeply appreciate. I have read roundabout 60 fanfics so far and in most human AU his thoughts about himself can be rather derogatory.
🖤Crowley is not the one begging Aziraphale to stay or be together with him - also a quite common theme in GO-fanfics. I absolutely love that!!
I kind of realise now that me writing reviews is my way of parting with a story that particularly got to my heart. This one is truly beautiful for several reasons and i had everything from goosebumps to laughter to angst to heartache to relief to sadness. It ends well, if it is happy is really only your choice. ❤️
This story made me finally set up a "re-read-list" and i absolutely recommend it, if you´re in for a bit of heartache, a different plot and a different version of a "and they life happy ever after". It is a quiet, lovable and aching book, well balanced and still easy to read.
ps: I thought a lot about it, could i do it? Could i fall in love with a ghost? I would like to think of myself as having stayed in the house but probably i would have run. If i had come past this first angst and built a connection - would i have been able to? Would it have been enough to simply love? To have an ethereal connection and know you are not alone but ... no friends to share with, to be grounded to the house, no picnics, no touch? What are your thoughts on this?
pps: if you have read this one, pls come here and scream and cry with me in the comments!!! I dont want to tell too much here but there are scenes in the book that i would love to romp on in the comments!!

I want to recommend two GO fics that have really hit me recently.
In the house we remain by @commodorecliche
Rated M - Human AU. This is, at its heart, a ghost story. But it’s so much more than that. I’m a wuss and don’t like scary things so after @shadesofecclescakes recommended this to me, I put off reading it for aaaaages. But I finally picked it up while I was recovering from a migraine and Oh. My. Fucking. God. I bawled my way through most of this beautiful story. It’s a story of love, yearning, death, and life. There is deep frustration at the unfairness of life, and it evoked really deep emotions in me. I does have a happy ending, I promise. (I had to keep begging Shades to reassure me) - CW for death, murder, unresolved & unpunished murder, drowning
and
The One-Way Waltz of the Moth and the Wild Flame (and the Incident of the Authorial Intrusion) by Pokimoko
Rated T - This amazing post-canon work is in turns hilarious, insightful, deep as FUCK, and soft as down. It is written in a style so close to the book that it made my heart sing - it was like reading Pratchett. All his humour, insight, and metaphor style were right there. There were even ducks learning socialism. I mean…🥰 There is no happy ending to this piece, but it’s still highly satisfying - there is growth and emotion that is so deep and well written that it made me cry. Funny flippant things turn into deep metaphors, and if nothing else, there’s some banging songs mentioned - both Queen AND classical. 😉 CW - forest fire- so much fire. Can’t think of anything else but please let me know if you know of anything else.

Fanfiction Recommendation 38: In this house we remain (Good Omens)
in the house we remain - Chapter 1 - commodorecliche - Good Omens - Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett [Archive of Our Own]
A spooky ghost AU where Crowley is haunting Aziraphale.
Fair warning there are some spooky and dark moments--particularly around how Crowley ended up a ghost--as well as some smut.

tagged by the beloved @hood-ex 💜 I'm absolutely horrid about getting these tag games done so I'm jumping on this now before I forget!! this is also quite a bit more than one last line but I haven't shared anything for a while, so!
rules: in a new post, show the last line you wrote (or drew) and tag as many people as there are words (or as many as you feel like).
She’d called him once after he ran back in 2012. He’d hung up on her midway through, too entranced by the taste of freedom and vaguely sick with the bitter tang of betrayal that Maddie had left on the back of his tongue. He was on his own then, much to his mother’s chagrin. It’s the most concern she’d shown him in awhile and had lasted all of a minute before turning to anger, demanding he stop wasting his life, to come home and try a different school, and do things right this time.
She hasn’t called since.
He has no idea what this call is going to entail; she doesn’t know about the tsunami or the separations, can’t know about it, unless Maddie—
He inhales sharply, bites his tongue, and answers.
“Hello?”
“Evan,” she bites. If Buck were a betting man, he’d say she wasn’t expecting him to pick up the phone.
tag, you're it: @playinginthunderstorms @inell @boasamishipper @apartmentsmoke @ediediaz @commodorecliche and anyone else who wants to play!!

Good Omens Fic Rec: moments lost, moments gained
With frantic, fumbling steps, Hamish hurries back to his car, grabs his radio, and alerts headquarters.  “Yes, uh,” He huffs with urgency, “This is PC Hamish Black; I’ve got two folks out here off the A30, both suffering from severe injuries and unresponsive. One burn and one… impact, maybe? I can’t tell. I need emergency units here as soon as possible.”  Hamish takes another look at the two men strewn across the highway, the rubble and flames surrounding them both. He vaguely hears headquarters responding to his alert.  “Please, hurry,” he mutters.   Crowley and Aziraphale are expelled from their respective realms when their partnership is found out, and find themselves waking up in hospital as humans, with no memory of their previous natures, and no memory of each other.
Length: 12,895 words
AO3 Rating: Mature
Best for: Safe in Public, Human AU
Triggers: Injury/Memory Loss
Read it here, fic by commodorecliche, Dervila
*Minor Spoilers* The only thing negative thing about this story is that is ends!!! This was such an intriguing story! Crowley and Aziraphale are found burned and broken in the middle of the road with no memory of who they are or what happened. Though you never get the full details, it's clear to us what must have happened.
They wake up together in the hospital and we follow along for their stay. Their memories don't come back to them, but somethings are unforgettable. Like that Aziraphale likes books, Crowley likes old cars, that they dine at the Ritz, and Crowley calls Aziraphale Angel. They could never forget about each other. The muscle memory remains.
This is an excellently paced and written story. It'll break your heart a bit, but nothing too heavy. I grieve for them because of the time and memories they've lost, but the important part is that they're together. They can be together now. Safely. And maybe it isn't the life they deserve, but they'll figure it out together.

hey, thanks for rebloging so many amazing jeanmarco arts. im a slowpoke and got into them recently, it sucks that so many amazing artists deactivated their accs here on tumblr, so im glad someone reblogged it before ❤
hi! this may sound a little bit silly, but your ask just reminded me how easy it still was to interact with jeanmarco content back when I joined the fandom in 2021; big and small blogs were still around, lots of people were active, we even had a short-lived revival with the release of the last chapter and <spoilers> Marco’s inexplainable absence from that damn smoke. it was pretty great, so I’m really glad that my blog is making the same small contribution to the fandom experience of new fans as others have done for me 🥹

Tagged by @vampiricfruitcake thank you~, haven't done these in a while so it's nice -w-
Favourite colour: Deep dark red, purples, blue (..wait, do I like Gale partly because he's purple/blue themed?)
Last song: Thunder bringer from Epic the Musical 👌👌
Currently reading:
youtube
Just stab me now by Jill Bearup (i feel like I don't understand some of the political plot and I don't know if it's the feature of the meta narrative)
Descendant of the Crane by Joan He (about midpoint in it, more quiet than I thought but it's been good)
Heir to thorn and flame by Ben Alderson (possible trashy powerplay-lovetriangle romance between prince, servant pretending to be a prince and a dragon rider, I don't know yet, only on page 40.)
Sunbringer by Hannah Kaner (sequel to Godkiller which I really liked)
The last unicorn by Peter S. Beagle (it slowed down but language at points is so pretty and "have a taco." without explanation in a world it shouldn't be still cracks me up)
Fate be changed by Farrah Rochon (I flipflop being interested in continuing this)
On top of all of those, I have Song of silver, flame like night duology by Amelie Wen Zhao, Night hunt by Alexandra Christo, Bonesmith by Nicki Pau Preto, Counterpart by Elle Pyne, Mask of shadows by Linsey Miller and I'm afraid you've got dragons by Peter.S.Beagle waiting for me to read them.
Currently watching: My adventures with superman and rewatching second season of House slowly because I'm more nauseated by it than I was when I was younger. With the idea on getting to episodes I have never seen.
Currently craving: .....new sweet endhawks fanart? And Amphibia season 2 and 3 coming to Disney+. And Book of Bill and Reckoning of Roku coming out already.
Coffee or tea: Coffee, coffee in the morning and in the evening, but not after 21.
Tagging @vieraslaji, @commodorecliche and @fenrhi, but no pressure to do this :>

Binderary book #2! A bind of a very short fic, moments lost, moments gained by @commodorecliche and Dervila. I asked permission to bind this way back in December, but with the holidays and moving apartments in January it got pushed back till now. I'm glad it's finally done. It's a great little fic (little for this kind of binding, I should say; it's actually 12k words), though a little angsty and bittersweet. Good Omens fandom, but that should no longer come as a surprise to anyone who knows me, lol. Pics and process below the cut!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Top view and endpapers. Feathers are from the same sheet as the ones from In Death's Embrace, which I posted last week. The visual elements of this book were assembled entirely with things I already had. The gray cover paper is some kind of drawing paper that I bought for another project that only used a small amount, and the blue book cloth was a scrap from when I bound The God Below. Even the ribbon was something I already had; I think it's one of those loops you find in shirts sometimes. I could make a thematic point here about finding new life and purpose in an unintended role, which would be appropriate to the story, but really I just had them on hand and thought they were pretty together. And I was right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spot the mistake! When I first did the cover I was proudly showing it to people and then started swearing because I realized I'd forgotten the comma. Fortunately that was fixable but it was a pain to break out the embossing stuff and heat gun all over again just to add the damned measly little comma. The embossing powder didn't work as well on this cover as it has in the past, and I think it's the paper. Since it's drawing paper I think it absorbs ink better than the scrapbook paper and cardstock I usually use it with, so the lines came out more sketch-like and less neat than I expected. I don't think I'd like it for every book but I do like it for this one.
It is also my first time doing those little corner bits (I think this is called a half binding? Google results were inconclusive). They were a last-minute impulse decision and made from a fairly small scrap of book cloth, and I'm pretty happy with how they came out, despite:
Tumblr media
You aren't supposed to be able to see the pointy bit XD A couple of them are like this on the inside. On the bright side, now I know better how to cut the pieces so they don't do that in future.
I'm scheduling this to post ahead of time (date of writing: 2/13) so I don't flood anyone's dash with books and fic recs, but what that means is that by the time this goes up I may have another one ready to go. Binderary was a good idea for productivity!
