Kageyama looks at Hoshiumi, both men out of breath but the shorter one apparently still finding some air to tell his setter that he needs the set differently.

Tobio shakes his head slightly while he stares back at Hoshiumi, at a complete loss of how to answer politely until Romero breaks it up.

He purses his lips, bows as an apology and promises to do better before moving sides for the next practice game.

But the truth rang in his head, insisting he listen to it. He misses Hinata.

Hinata sighs and turns to Atsumu, who seems disappointed that his shortest spiker can't read his thoughts like they are twins.

The setter keeps insisting that Hinata just has to trust him like the only thing missing here was for them to practice until Atsumu could read him without him using his head.

Shoyo tries to be respectful, and the team is generally great. But that still doesn't make the truth any less obvious to his heart.

He misses Kageyama.

kageyama walked out of the locker room with hinata, talking to him about how he would set to him, and hinata giving him ideas on how they could execute them. “i just think you were a bit slow yesterday.” kageyama said.

“oi. king.” tsukishima said, standing in front of kageyama. he still towered over him. hinata huffed. even after these years, tsukishima still kind of ignored hinata when he talked to kageyama.

“it’s been how long? cut the nickname.” kageyama rolled his eyes.

“you gonna cry about it?” tsukishima asked.

“i’m your vice captain.” kageyama crossed his arms, using his power over tsukishima.

“yeah? tadashi’s our captain.” tsukishima smirked.

“fuck you!” kageyama exclaimed.

“i bet you’d love to, king.” tsukishima snickered. “anyway,” he sighed, glancing at tadashi, who nodded. tsukishima groaned. “can you,” he paused, shaking his head, “help me practice my spikes?” he mumbled. “you’re,” he glanced at tadashi again, who smiled with two thumbs up, “one of the best setters i know.” tsukishima said in a monotone voice. “please.”

kageyama laughed, making a show of it too. he doubled over, holding his stomach, just to make fun of tsukishima. “you want-” kageyama started laughing more.

“fuck you.” tsukishima grumbled, walking away.

“wait.” kageyama wiped his eyes, still grinning. “i’ll help you after practice.” he said.

“okay.” tsukishima said, walking over to tadashi. tadashi nodded his head towards kageyama, turning tsukishima around. tsukishima grumbled a thanks.

“of course, tsuki.” kageyama laughed, continuing to talk to hinata.

after everyone left, kageyama was alone in the gym. which wasn’t a problem for him.

but for tsukishima, it was. why’d he have to be alone with him? “i’m gonna get some water before we start.” kageyama said. “want some?”

“uh, sure.” tsukishima shrugged. kageyama left and tsukishima quickly pulled his phone out and called tadashi.

“what’s up, kei?” tadashi asked.

“why leave me alone here?” tsukishima groaned.

“this was the plan, dummy. you pretend you need help with, like, a line shot or something, keep him alone after practice for a couple days, fall in love with each other, the end.”

tsukishima huffed. “i hate this. i hate this so much. he’s gonna find out!”

“maybe if you’re being obvious about it.” tadashi said. “kei, i swear. you’ll be fine. plus, you were actually complaining about how you were spiking. just work with him.”

tsuki sighed. “okay.” he mumbled. “bye.”

“who was that?” kageyama asked.

“tadashi. he just needed help with something.” tsukishima said, putting his phone down. he looked at kageyama, his heart stopping. kageyama was stood so the setting light hit him perfectly. his eyes were slightly looking up, and his hair fell perfectly across his forehead. tsukishima cursed his brain. how could he have fallen for kageyama tobio of all people? he would rather have fallen for tadashi. sure it’d be more inconvenient but at least it wasn’t kageyama.

with kageyama, tsukishima had to make a show of making fun of him. that was his brand, but then he screwed it up. that one day in the park in their first year when kageyama grabbed his shirt. tsukishima thought about it all the time. “hey. are we practicing or what?”

“oh.” tsukishima said, clearing his throat. “yeah.” he said.

“so what happened again?” kageyama asked.

“i don’t feel in sync with the setters.” tsukishima said.

“oh. i think i remember our last practice match. you were a bit weird when i set to you. you’re blocking good though?” tsukishima nodded. “okay.” kageyama said. “just try it differently. or you can do the hinata move and close your eyes so i can set into your hand.” he joked.

tsukishima scoffed. “he’s an insane ball of energy who takes too many risks.”

“it worked.” kageyama grinned. tsukishima saw electricity in his eyes. tsukishima felt so depressed when he thought about it. kageyama clearly would never fall for tsukishima.

“alright, let’s go. i have to study.” tsukishima said.

“fuck!” tsukishima yelled, leaning into tadashi’s shoulder. “why him?”

“c’mon, tsuki.” tadashi sighed. “i’m sure if you keep practicing together it’ll-”

“there was electricity in his eyes! when he thought about fucking hinata.” tsukishima said. “fuck, i don’t know why i ever thought this would work. i’m supposed to be smart!” he looked at tadashi.

“i just think-”

“and he kept talking about him. like i don’t care?? he kept going hinata this, hinata that. grow a brain cell! i’m in love with you!” tsukishima groaned, leaning on tadashi’s shoulder.

“can i talk now?” tadashi asked. tsukishima nodded. “first of all, it’s so weird seeing you like this.” he said. tsukishima grumbled. “second of all, sh, second of all, hinata is his only friend. he has nobody else he hangs out with. like us. hinata’s like his safe space.” tsukishima hit tadashi’s chest. “ow. i know it hurts, but you’re a big boy. you can handle it.” tadashi teased, earning another push.

“i’m not going around bragging about my safe space.”

“well, kageyama was abandoned in middle school. i’ve always been there. kageyama now has someone who’s declared out loud in front of so many people that he’d be by his side, ready for him to set. he’d be waiting. obviously he’s gonna grow attached and be super proud of it. hinata is his second half.”

“fuck.” tsukishima huffed.

“i know you’re mad at yourself.” tsukishima looked at tadashi with a glare. “you can’t be mad at everyone else, especially me, when you know i’m right. just tell him tomorrow you might need a bit of extra practice again. no big deal.”

“fine.” tsukishima said. he grabbed his stuff. “i’m going home.”

“okay. sleep tonight, kei!” tadashi said.

“i will.” tsukishima sighed, walking out of the room. “thank you, ms. yamaguchi.”

tadashi’s mom smiled. “of course. you’re always welcome here, kei, you know that. come here for a sec though?” she asked. tsukishima walked up to her. “just a bit of advice. tell him you like him, hm?”

tsukishima blushed. “he’s- ah. thank you.” he said.

she nodded. “be safe on your way home.” she said.

the next day, tsukishima found kageyama walking alone in the hallway. “oi. king.” kageyama turned at the noise, making tsukishima snort. “you respond to king, hm?”

kageyama scoffed. “let it go.” he said.

“don’t think i will.” tsukishima smirked.

“what do you want?” kageyama asked.

“oh. practice again. today.” tsukishima said. “i think after the week i’ll be better.”

“sure.” kageyama said. “here. i’ll give you my number.” he pulled his phone out.

tsukishima furrowed his brows. how did they not have each other’s numbers yet? “sure.” he pulled his phone out, handing it to kageyama. what did tsukishima fall for? kageyama, who was the dumbest guy he knew, aside from hinata, but the best setter he knew? kageyama, their vice captain, with better leadership skills than he’d thought? kageyama tobio, the one who looked beautiful when he set a volleyball. the way his hair flew and fell just barely over his eyes. he sighed to himself, taking the phone when kageyama handed it to him.

“um, you, uh, have a text from tadashi.” kageyama said. he looked a bit uncomfortable.

tsukishima furrowed his brows, taking his phone and looking at the message.

tadashi: i see you hanging with your crushy wushy tobio

tsukishima’s eyes widened so big they almost popped out of his socket. he looked around, seeing kageyama was no longer there. shit. fuck.

he looked around, making a beeline for tadashi. “you asshole!” he exclaimed.

“hm? what’d i do?” tadashi furrowed his brows. tsukishima’s eyes were burning with tears of embarrassment.

“he saw the fucking message, tadashi!” tsukishima said.

tadashi gasped, his face just as shocked as tsukishima’s was. “fuck, tsuki. i’m so sorry.” tadashi said. “listen, i’ll take you home. we can go home? i’ll treat you to lunch. fuck. i’m so sorry. seriously.” tsukishima started to breathe unevenly, which tadashi could tell was a sign of his anxiety acting up. “c’mon. let’s go home.” tadashi said, pulling tsukishima away from everyone. to save him even more embarrassment.

they got in tadashi’s car. tsukishima was still having a hard time breathing. “you saw him and i talking. didn’t you see he had two phones in his hand?? why would he have two phones in his fucking hand?” tsukishima exclaimed, leaning against his dashboard. tadashi stayed quiet, letting tsukishima try to breathe. “i’m not gonna be able to go into practice again! there goes my fucking volleyball career. i quit in the third year and colleges think i don’t have dedication.” he let out the smallest sob. it couldn’t even be called a cry. it was just a small, annoyed groan. “and now he-” tsukishima paused, and tadashi covered his eyes. “FUCK!”

“i’m really sorry, kei.” tadashi whispered. “i can tell him i didn’t mean it for you.”

“you put his name in the message.” tsukishima said. his stress was through the roofs.

tadashi opened his mouth to say something else, but his phone started ringing. it was kageyama. “uh, that’s my mom. i gotta take it. i’ll be back. just try to breathe and get back in your headspace.” he got out of the car, walking a bit of a distance just in case. “tobio?” he said. “what’s up?”

“um, that, uh, message. was it,, uh, true?” kageyama asked.

“oh! no. no way. you know, with that rivalry thing you guys have, how could it possibly-”

“oh.” kageyama said. he sounded,, disappointed almost?

tadashi furrowed his brows. “u-unless you want it to be true?”

“what? no! no way. not at all.” kageyama said. tadashi heard rustling in the background. “oi! dumbass! my- that’s my phone!”

“tadashi! hey!” shouyo said. “you know, these guys are dumber than me it’s crazy. i thought tsukishima was smart, but clearly he can’t tell when the most obvious idiot in the world is- ah! uh, is crushing on him.”

“huh?” tadashi asked, starting to smile.

“it’s so- GET OFF! it’s so obvious! they’re in love with each other. i see the way tsukishima looks at him, and his little secret glances.” hinata said.

tadashi grinned. “hinata, i love you.” he said. “thank you! bye!” he hung up, getting in the car again. “i have-” but then he noticed his best friend wasn’t there. “uh- kei?”

while tadashi was on the phone, tsukishima kei made the decision to tell kageyama tobio exactly how he felt. he ran to the gym, knowing kageyama would be there.

he got into the gym, seeing kageyama and tobio fighting. “kageyama.” tsukishima said.

“huh?” kageyama asked, getting red.

“i hate you.” tsukishima said, just as tadashi walked in.

“huh?” kageyama asked, his heart visibly dropping.

that reassured tsukishima. “i hate you.” he said. he got closer to kageyama. “i hate how you look when you set. your form makes me want to quit volleyball.” kageyama scoffed, his jaw dropping.

“kei-” tadashi started, trying to stop him. but tsukishima wouldn’t let him.

“i hate how good you are with your teammates. i hate that you help me with no second thought.” tsukishima sucked in a breath. “i hate how perfect you look when the sun hits you at just the right angle, even though every angle is the right angle.”

“what the fuck?” hinata asked, his jaw dropping even farther than kageyama’s.

“tsukishima.” kageyama said, confused as tsukishima grabbed his shirt.

“i hate that you’re so pretty when you set.” it was so weird. tsukishima looked so frustrated and angry, yet he was, complimenting? kageyama. “i hate that i fell for you.”

“i-” kageyama started, but then he felt a very rough pair of lips against his own. they moved away, and kageyama found himself chasing after them.

“i hate you.” tsukishima said quietly, his face completely rid of emotion. he just looked like plain old tsukishima kei.

kageyama was confused, and he felt awkward. but he just responded by kissing tsukishima again. “i hate you too.” kageyama mumbled.
