oh! forgot to do this because I was travelling! (click through for the whole image)
I vaguely alternated my reading this year between speculative fiction and queer romance, though there was a fair amount of queer romance in my speculative fiction too, which is how I like it. It took me A While to really get into books this year, a lot of what I read at the start just didn't really do it for me in various ways, so that was frustrating.
Standouts, i.e. things I really enjoyed, in chronological order:
- Differently Morphous/Existentially Challenged by Yahtzee Croshaw - these gave me a crisis in sci fi vs fantasy (I think I'm just judgemental about slime creatures) and are very Douglas Adams/British humour in feel, I had a lot of fun. I love when an author has a distinct style to their writing and humour.
- The City We Became/The World We Make by N. K. Jemisin - I have been scared to read more of hers since I adored The Fifth Season, and these were a fantastic duo. Interesting urban magic storytelling, and hit me right in the power of community.
- The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon - love going into a book with very little information, I knew there were dragons but I had no idea about most of it. Very excited when the thing I'd been low-key shipping was actually?? happening??? Much less emphasis on dragons than I'd hoped/wanted, but I really enjoyed it anyway, and some fascinating exploration of the power of mythology.
- Bad Dogs / Pretty Dogs by Riley Nash - I was very fond of the Riley Nash series I read at the beginning of the year, but these boys were even rougher and that appealed to me a lot. I wasn't super sold on the ending to Pretty Dogs, but I enjoyed the characters, and that's what really counts!
- The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer - I hesitate a little on this one because some of the storytelling itself was a little clunky or frustrating for me. But oh the story. Oh, the story got me and then I turned around and started reading again from the beginning. Again, all I really knew of this was "queer romance in space" so I wasn't expecting my heart to get torn out but I loved that it did.
Honourable mentions go to Margins by Landry Brennan which I loved for its quiet simplicity, but I also spent September editing her second book (Take it Outside) and help I fell so hard for Adrian and Beau I wish I could recommend that already! I am definitely intrigued by James S. A. Corey's new series, it was a fun start and I'm looking forward to more of those. And I enjoyed The Word for World is Forest by Ursula K Le Guin - several bits of cleverness within the storytelling itself which worked really well, I'm definitely adding some more of hers to my list this year.

'...Doctor Who became, to put it plainly, queer as f**k
Listen, we know Doctor Who has always been queer: from Pearl Mackie’s openly gay companion Bill Potts, to everyone’s favourite crime-fighting lesbian duo Madam Vastra and Jenny.
But with queer TV writing legend Russell T Davies back behind the wheel for the recent 60th anniversary specials, and the upcoming 14th season, Doctor Who became an all-out Pride festival.
Most notably, the long-running BBC sci-fi show saw queer Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa takeover as the first out queer Black Doctor, while, in a brief return to the role, David Tennant quietly confirmed that even his iteration of the Time Lord was bisexual.
Heartstopper breakout star Yasmin Finney shone in the first anniversary episode, playing Rose Noble, the trans daughter of former companion Donna Noble. If that wasn’t enough, the entire episode’s pivotal plot was the very fact that Rose being trans saved the universe.
And with queer acting legends such as Miriam Margolyes, as The Meep, and Neil Patrick Harris, as The Toymaker, popping up, Doctor Who has become certified gay viewing.
Queer-coded friends became queer-centric lovers
Two of the year’s biggest series returned, Good Omens and Our Flag Means Death, and had their lead characters move from being heavily queer-coded to actual canon queer.
In Good Omens, David Tennant and Michael Sheen’s angel and demon duo Aziraphale and Crowley took the fandom to heaven then hell, as they enjoyed a brief kiss at the end of season two – even though it ended in heartbreak...'

Ryan Gosling, known for his remarkable performances in movies like La La Land, Blade Runner 2049, and Barbie, is reportedly in negotiations to take on a leading role in a new Star Wars film. This exciting project is set to be directed by Shawn Levy, the creative mind behind hit films like Deadpool and The Wolverine. While the movie is yet to have an official title, the news has already stirred excitement among fans of the actor and the legendary Star Wars franchise. A Potential Collaboration Between Gosling and Levy Shawn Levy, 56, has been developing this Star Wars film for over two years. Collaborating with writer Jonathan Tropper, who joined the project in mid-2024, Levy is working to bring a fresh and unique story to life. The duo has previously worked together on projects like This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, both of which were praised for their engaging storytelling and emotional depth. This history of successful collaboration raises expectations for their venture into the Star Wars universe. credits: wikicommons Elen Nivrae from Paris, France, CC BY 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons Although details about the film’s plot remain under wraps, sources suggest that it will be a standalone movie. Unlike some previous Star Wars installments, which were part of larger trilogies or sagas, this film may offer a self-contained story, potentially introducing new characters and ideas while maintaining the spirit of the beloved galaxy far, far away. Gosling’s Growing Interest in Sci-Fi Ryan Gosling is no stranger to the science fiction genre. His portrayal of K in Blade Runner 2049, a sequel to the 1982 cult classic Blade Runner, showcased his ability to navigate complex, futuristic worlds. Sharing the screen with Harrison Ford, who famously played Han Solo in the original Star Wars trilogy, Gosling brought emotional depth and nuance to his role. This background in sci-fi, combined with his versatility as an actor, makes Gosling a compelling choice for a Star Wars film. Fans are eager to see how he will adapt to the iconic franchise, potentially taking on the role of a Jedi, a rebel, or even a new character with connections to the Force. Levy’s Vision for the Star Wars Universe Shawn Levy has demonstrated a knack for balancing action, humor, and heart in his films, making him a promising candidate to direct a Star Wars movie. His experience working on superhero films and heartfelt dramas suggests he could bring a fresh perspective to the Star Wars universe. Levy’s involvement also indicates a potential shift in the tone of Star Wars movies, which have traditionally balanced epic battles with emotional storytelling. With Gosling on board, fans might expect a film that emphasizes character development while delivering the thrilling action sequences that the franchise is known for. Scheduling Challenges for Levy If Gosling officially joins the project, it could alter Levy’s filmmaking schedule. The director had been considering another project—a boy band movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. However, the potential involvement of Gosling might push the Star Wars film to the forefront of Levy’s priorities. This change in focus highlights the significance of having Gosling as a lead actor. His interest in the project signals its potential to become a major highlight in the Star Wars franchise, which has seen a mix of critical and commercial successes in recent years. The Current State of the Star Wars Franchise The last Star Wars movie to be released was Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Since then, several projects have been announced, but few have made it to completion. The next scheduled film is The Mandalorian and Grogu, which finished filming in December 2024 and is set for a 2026 release. This gap in theatrical releases has left fans eagerly awaiting fresh content. If Levy’s film moves forward with Gosling in a lead role, it could rejuvenate interest in the franchise and draw audiences back to theaters. Gosling’s Career and Personal Choices At 44, Ryan Gosling continues to make thoughtful career choices, balancing his professional life with his responsibilities as a father. In previous interviews, he has mentioned how his family life influences his decision-making. He has avoided roles that require delving into dark or emotionally taxing territory, instead opting for characters and stories that align with his current priorities. This approach to his career could bring a unique energy to the Star Wars project. With Gosling’s focus on positivity and collaboration, his potential involvement in the film is likely to resonate with audiences who value both substance and spectacle in their entertainment. credits: wikicommons Gage Skidmore from Peoria, AZ, United States of America, CC BY-SA 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons What Fans Can Expect Although details about the storyline and characters remain a mystery, the combination of Shawn Levy’s directorial expertise and Ryan Gosling’s acting talent has generated significant buzz. Fans are speculating about the possibilities, from Gosling playing a new type of Jedi to introducing entirely original elements to the Star Wars mythos. If the film is indeed a standalone project, it could offer an opportunity to explore uncharted territory in the Star Wars universe. This would be a departure from the interconnected sagas of the past, potentially attracting both long-time fans and newcomers to the franchise. A New Chapter for Star Wars The Star Wars franchise has always been about pushing boundaries and exploring new horizons. With Shawn Levy at the helm and the possibility of Ryan Gosling as the lead, this untitled movie represents a chance to expand the galaxy far, far away in exciting and unexpected ways. Switch Rivals - Chapter 8/21
This is one of many archived fanfics featuring 1st and 2nd generation K-pop acts that I've come across recently. It's all in good fun, and maybe a bit cringeworthy! Just to clarify, I don't post fanfics, so I hope to the people that post and read K-pop fanfics makes sense. Credits go out to the original creator 90s_love.
*Note: Nothing in their post will change (unless necessary), other than being posted here, and the (Link) will be provided to the page that i found it on.
Characters:
Kim Jaeduck, An Seungho (Tony), Moon Heejoon, Jang Woohyuk, Ahn Chilhyun (Kangta), Lee Jaewon (H.O.T.), Eun Jiwon, Lee Jaijin, Kang Sunghoon, Ko Jiyong, Jang Suwon
Summary:
Jaeduck is getting along with H.O.T while Tony's trying to get to know Suwon.
Chapter 8: Getting along
It's been a week since they moved in together. And as normal, they go to their (each other's) schedules. On Jaeduck's side, he's doing great. He and the other H.O.T members were getting along greatly.
"So, what does anyone want to do today?" (Heejun)
Jaeduck thought for a moment. "How about we do a film for our next concert?"
"That's a great idea, hyung." (Jaewon)
"Yeah. What theme should we do?" (Kangta)
"What about sci-fi?" (Jaeduck)
"That's good. Let's talk with the staff about that." (Woohyuk)
So they went to the manager and other staff. Jaeduck never felt like this before. Everyone actually supports his ideas. It's like he's being accepted for the first time. That made him think why Tony was talking about the Sechskies members not treating him well.
Speaking of Tony, he's not having a good time. He mostly stayed silent and when he did get to talk, the others never listened. His plan was getting to know Sunghoon, Jiyong, or Suwon and it might be his chance. While the other members left, only he and Suwon were in the practice room.
"So... What's going on today?" (Tony)
"What do you mean, hyung?" (Suwon)
"I mean, we're both here... I was in an accident... I was hoping we should get to know each other again." (Tony)
"Oh... okay. Mmm... We're in the same group, we barely talk in interviews." (Suwon)
"Wait. What do you mean, 'we'. You don't talk as much?" (Tony)
"You didn't notice? They rarely let us talk during interviews and conferences." (Suwon)
There was a big emphasis on the word 'us'. This made Tony wonder, (Have they not treated Suwon well too?). Something was telling him that something is going on in this group. Or in this company. In DSP, there is Sechskies, Fin.K.L, Click.B, SS501 and more. Why is the company focusing on Sechskies more than any other group in the company. And if it is the case, why are they treating Jaeduck and Suwon badly?
(I mean, if they suffered this much, wouldn't they have quit?) Tony thought to himself. Then he had an idea.
"Hey, Suwon. I have an idea. Why don't we form a unit together?" (Tony)
"A unit? As in a duo? I don't know about this." (Suwon)
"Come on. It will be fine. It will be just the two of us." (Tony)
"Okay... If you say so hyung." (Suwon)
"I'm sure of it." His plan was going great. It's a chance to get to know Suwon even more. And with that, he can learn about the other Sechkies members.
What could go wrong?

Gather Round While We Enjoy The 'Fairytales' From Dame Zina Have you ever heard of a father-daughter band? I am sure you might have heard of a father-daughter band, but have you heard of Dame Zina, probably not, and its with so much honor that I introduce you to this amazing duo that hails from Paris. We had the chance to delve into their personal life in a recent interview with Mister Styx of Musicarenagh, the duo shared their inspirations and aspirations as well some of the challenges they face in the music industry. Although Dame Zina represents the duo, it is the pseudonym for the daughter while the father performs under the moniker ‘Y’. With the daughter handling writing and vocals, the father takes charge of composition and production, delivering a profound exploration of music, femininity, freedom, and acceptance. Y stated he didn’t grow u in a musical home, music played a major role in his life, “it's something I always loved creating since my teens. – says Y This is evident in their latest album “Fairytales”, this is an album with 14 songs on it, these are not just your everyday songs, but they are the heartfelt message of Dame Zina it’s an intimate exploration of Dame Zina’s inner thoughts and secret garden, expressing a strong desire to break free from daily pressures. During the interview, Dame Zina was asked the main inspiration behind "Fairytales,” and this is what they shared “I feel like calling this album Fairytales and putting songs about magic in it make all the arts I practice make sense all together. I write farytales children's books, I sing fairytales musics.” Join us as we delve deeper into the life of the captivating daughter/father duo. Listen to Fairytales below https://open.spotify.com/album/2n4my3jxKftZUNTHAqd7qy Follow Dame Zina on Facebook Spotify Soundcloud Youtube Instagram Tiktok What is your stage name DZ: Dame Zina! It’s my artist name for everything I do, and in music, it’s both of us: I sing and write and my dad, Y, composes and arranges. Is there a story behind your stage name? DZ: Of course! I wanted to reference à character from Philip K Dick’s Valis Regained Sci-fi novel called « Zina ». The « Dame » part is the French equivalent to « Lady » with sounds very medieval, many witches and women from myths have that title. Where do you find inspiration? DZ: Life! I love living and everything inspires me. I think I grow a lot from romantic relationships, so I write a lot about them, and all my emotional challenges. I also write music to change people, especially about politics : women’s emancipation and LGBT rights are important to me! What was the role of music in the early years of your life? DZ: When I was a little girl I had a CD player and I used to listen on loop to my dad’s rock records. We didn’t have a TV so music was really important and playing all the time! Are you from a musical or artistic family? DZ: Big yes! My mum is a painter and my dad is literally half this very band! They both are very eccentric people and broke the rules of traditional life to do what they love. They both work as independent workers, not entirely as artists but definitely as creatives. [caption id="attachment_52923" align="alignnone" width="1335"] My mum is a painter and my dad is literally half this very band! They both are very eccentric people and broke the ru[/caption] Y: My father was a photographer but music comes from nowhere in the family, it's something I always loved creating since my teens. Who inspired you to be a part of the music industry? DZ: I studied music and singing my whole life, but never as an end goal, I was a theater person. This band and these albums are the result of us wanting to play together, more than aiming to release music. We’re very productive so of course now we love releasing it for everyone else to listen to! How did you learn to sing/write/to play? DZ: I studied! I always loved to act and sing but I used to be very out of tune and rythme wasn’t my forte either.
I took opera classes for nearly ten years, in order to be able to sing what I wanted how I wanted it. Now I experiment by myself or every time we do music together with my dad! Y: I took some composition class because I was not that good at playing instruments but my teacher quickly recognised I was more interested in writing music. Then I studied at a movie school as a sound engineer, because that was the mix between my love of music and my technical approach. Then life made me do something entirely different for 20 years and we were back to music when we started this project together, just for the fun of it. What was the first concert that you ever went to and who did you see perform? DZ: I think the first real concert I went to was Naaman, he’s a french reggae artist! Since then I’ve seen some bands I really admire like Magma or a concert of Steve Reich’s music last weekend! Seeing musicians you love Live is really something unique and unforgettable! How could you describe your music? Y: We try to blend something enjoyable, experimental, unheard, accessible and weird. For me, music should be a synesthesia and you should get images, feelings or even smells when listening to a good music. I was always inspired by film music as it's always made to evoke feelings. That's what I try to do with our music. Describe your creative process. Y: I always start with the music, and often with a bass riff. Melody always comes when the general mood is laid. I was very afraid of melody at first because I wrote a lot of instrumental songs, but it surprised me because I usually write the melodies almost instantly when inspiration comes. Usually I wake up with a song, I play a bit with it in my mind (don't try and speak to me then), and if it sticks, I go to the piano and a record it. There might be anywhere between a few an a lot of back-and-forth on the song... usually I find myself with a new part of the song sometimes alter and I repeat the process. When it seems finished, I start playing with structure and melody. But I love the fact that I keep the whole process in-house, from 1st note to mastering, because sometimes I feel the need to add a whole bridge, start or end, or to change the structure, after a few mastered versions... What is your main inspiration? DZ: Life ! I draw inspiration from what I experience, like most artists I believe. I write about myself, my feelings, my love life, my hardships ! I also write regularly about my dreams and a world I hope to see one day, equal, feminist and LGBT friendly ! What musician do you admire most and why? DZ: I can’t stop at one, but I’ll say the main one: Bjork! Her freedom inspires me to always try new things and not be afraid to step out of my comfort zone! I hate being stuck in a niche and she is an example to me of an artist who tried many different things and still achieved success! I makes me think anything is possible! Did your style evolve since the beginning of your career? DZ: Definitely! We learn a lot by trying! At the beginning, our music was so niche it was quite hard to understand for anyone other than the two of us. We learned to make it more accessible, always remembering to keep what makes it special and ours! [caption id="attachment_52924" align="alignnone" width="1335"] We learn a lot by trying! At the beginning, our music was so niche it was quite hard to understand for anyone other than the two of us[/caption] Who do you see as your main competitor? DZ: I don’t see music as a competition! It’s art, there will always be people who think we’re their favorite ones, and others who hate our music, there is no right answer and I love it! I don’t do music to be compared, I do it because I love to do it! What are your interests outside of music? DZ: I paint! That’s actually my main job, I illustrate and write books for children! I also act, dance, sew, model… I believe life in itself is art, so I might as well try everything!! If it wasn't a music career, what would you be doing?
DZ:I guess my answer is a non answer because music isn’t my only career, my children books are my dream job! But I've always been a butterfly : I love doing many things at once, music and illustration are my two main ones ! I believe I wouldn't be satisfied doing only one. What is the biggest problem you have encountered in the journey of music? DZ: Visibility ! we made the choice of staying independent, not getting into a music label, this way we can make sure to stay free in our creation, but it's also a lot of work to make it to our future fans ears ! If you could change one thing in the music industry, what would it be? DZ: Its very idealistic but I wish music successes would be more about creativity and less about shock and simplicity ? Why did you choose this as the title of this project? DZ: I feel like calling this album Fairytales and putting songs about magic in it make all the arts I practice make sense all together. I write farytales children's books, I sing fairytales musics. this magical world has always been my safe space, my exploring universe, my inspiration ! fairytales are about everything that matter : love, morality, dreams, all in beautiful metaphors ! https://open.spotify.com/artist/68xzkiSAFMv8GhYqgVWjtF What are your plans for the coming months? DZ: After this album, we will release in January a new single, Eau, in French, with a music video, as an extension to the album. I won't tell too much for now... Do you have any artistic collaboration plans DZ: Yes ! we have a few artists we plan to collaborate with in the future, singers, composers, and musicians who will remix us ! All very exciting !! What message would you like to give to your fans? DZ: Just a big thank you ! listening makes everything worth it for us

General stuff -they're all in their late 20s/early 30s -the accident did happen, but there was no musical stuff and they didn't die. they just had bad injuries -the choir has mostly split off. -Ships: Blackrose, Spacedolls, Passionfruit, frenchspace, spacerap, frenchspacerap, Mischa x Talia -Ricky and Penny are married, Ocean and Constance are married and have a son, Mischa and Talia are engaged, and Noel is just fucking alone at the start of the story -Ocean travels a lot but lives with Constance in Uranium -Ricky and Penny live in Ricky's childhood home -Noel lives in his childhood home -Mischa and Talia have a house in Canada and in Ukraine Ocean -Politician -She campaigns for anti-discrimination and environmental stuff often -She is publicly proud about her relationship with Constance -lost contact with most of the choir -sometimes talks to Penny but it's not as easy as it used to be Constance -Baker -She is passively famous and is absolutely fine with just that -hates how people try and publicize her relationship with Ocean, but understands that happens sometimes -consistently talks to Penny, but they aren't necessarily friends Ricky -Sci-Fi author -couple of bestsellers, including his debut novel 'The Space-Age Bachelor Man' -finds speculation about his relationship status funny, but if you asked he would tell you he is happy in his marriage to Penny -tries to talk to Noel sometimes, but only got a response once. It was for an invitation to see the preview of the film based on one of Ricky's books. Noel declined. Penny/Jane -Painter -one of her most acclaimed works is a painting of her and Ricky together. She has one she never finished with all the choir is together. She started it after the accident, but stopped working on it as they all drifted apart. -very happy with Ricky and content to be where she is in life -talks to Constance and consistently eats at Blackwood Cafe. Constance says she doesn't have to pay, but she does. Mischa -Rapper/Singer:has a solo career but also has a duo with Talia -He has a song about his feelings for Noel, Ricky and Talia called 'This Big Heart of Mine' but everyone always assumes it's ONLY about Talia -Loves Talia very much but is also still hung up on his old crushed on Ricky and Noel. He and Talia aren't married yet because they both realized that they don't quite care about the title of their relationship, just that they're togther. -Hasn't spoken to the choir in years but is back in Uranium to do so
Talia -Singer:solo career as well as duo with Mischa -always had a passion for singing but Mischa was the one to encourage it -Loves Mischa and supports his endeavor of trying to win the hearts of Ricky and Noel -never actually knew the choir but thinks they sound nice based on what Mischa says Noel -Poet -most popular works is a poetry collection about the accident and how it felt to see all the choir members drift away after it titled 'Typhoon Mind' -loved Mischa and maybe Ricky, but never did anything about it. Now he beds random men every night. -hasn't spoken to the choir in years and doesn't really want to
and that's it i'll probably post it on ao3 when i finish writing the first couple of chapters

On a recent afternoon in Corriganville Park, an old movie-set ranch in the rocky foothills of the Santa Susana Mountains in Southern California’s Simi Valley, with her blonde bouffant teased to previously uncharted dimensions, a spiked headdress in the shape of a bursting nebula, Wonder Woman–esque wrist cuffs, and bulbous Proenza Schouler open-toe shoes, Jennifer Coolidge looked very much the part of a sci-fi superheroine. She brought to mind such greats as Jane Fonda in Barbarella, Zsa Zsa Gabor in Queen of Outer Space, and First Mate Piggy in “Pigs in Space,” the cult Muppets space opera.
Coolidge, who this year swept the Emmys, Golden Globes, and Critics Choice Awards for her portrayal of a heedless hotel habitué on The White Lotus, was engaged in a winner-takes-all slugfest with Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the directing duo known as Daniels, whose multiverse epic, Everything Everywhere All at Once, was the most nominated film at this year’s Academy Awards. It was a surreal scene. Coolidge was protecting Earth from a giant extraterrestrial fashion lobster with monstrous claws, played by Scheinert, but instead of “Pow!” and “Whack!” their interaction was more like “Pow” and…“Whack?”
“I think the best thing to do is to take this,” said Kwan, handing Coolidge a rhinestone-encrusted metal scepter before ducking back behind the camera. “Act like you’re going to stab him.” Coolidge squinted her eyes, seemingly confused about the nature of her superpowers. “Oh, you mean I’m supposed to be annihilating him? That’s cool, I guess,” she said. She proceeded to gently prod Scheinert, who appeared to barely feel the might of her wrath under the spiked sleeves of his crustacean-couture ensemble. Glancing back and forth between his camera’s viewfinder and the low-stakes combat unfolding before him, Kwan furrowed his brow. “You’re being shocked by the scepter,” he explained to Scheinert. Trying not to laugh, he added, “And maybe, kind of, enjoying it.” Scheinert put his claws on his hips, nodding his head in agreement, his whiskerlike antennae flopping in the air. As if on cue, Coolidge prodded him once again, this time more forcefully, sending Scheinert into an exaggerated Looney Tunes–like convulsion, followed by suggestive gyrations reminiscent of a K-Pop boy-bander.
Coolidge let out a loud cackle. “I can’t kill him now,” she said, her face awash with childlike amusement. When the camera clicks paused, Scheinert peeled off his Robyn Lynch balaclava. Shirley Kurata, Daniels’ costume designer, began removing his arthropod exterior. “What is it about lobster claws that I’m so attracted to?” Coolidge wondered. She then turned her attention to surveying the clothing racks filled with tubular disc dresses, new-wave hats shaped like lampshades, and metallic-hued space cowboy boots. “Oh, so this is what we’re going to be doing today,” she said, her voice tinged with bewildered excitement. “I look pretty evil. They seem to like me in villain outfits a lot.”
...
For their latest romp, the directors said there was no question that Coolidge had to be the A-list star of this B-movie shoot, though they had never worked with the actor and their only in-person interaction with her was a brief hello at the Critics Choice Awards in January. “But of all the people who are having a moment right now, she felt like someone exciting to put on the cover of a magazine,” Kwan said. Thanks to her Rubenesque figure, flowing blonde locks, bee-stung pout, and million-dollar smize, Coolidge certainly stands out in everything she’s in, whether she’s playing a dim-witted nail tech in Legally Blonde, a desperate housewife having a lesbian affair with her poodle’s trainer in Best in Show, a sultry suburban MILF in American Pie, a trigger-happy mother-in-law to Jennifer Lopez’s bride-to-be in Shotgun Wedding, or, most recently, a psychic TV medium in Netflix’s We Have a Ghost.
More than anything, Scheinert explained, the directors appreciate a stacked résumé. “I’m prejudiced against young people,” he said. “I have problems with our youth-obsessed culture and beauty standards, so anytime we can shake things up a little, I’m all for it.” Kwan and Scheinert, who are both 35, said working with Michelle Yeoh, 60, Jamie Lee Curtis, 64, and now Coolidge, 61, allows them to pick up “different strategies for existing in this industry,” almost as if by osmosis. “We still feel like just babies,” Kwan said.
On that point, Coolidge was in firm agreement. “The film business tires people out. But I swear to god, I felt like I was getting together with little kids,” she said of her day with the directors. “They were like these sort of child prodigies who are super, super smart and just super creative. I’ve never been asked to do a shoot like this: I have weapons, take down small cities, pick up cars and throw them. I don’t know if I will ever be this surprised again. It was one of the best things I have ever been involved in.”
Like the rest of the world, Kwan and Scheinert swooned over Coolidge’s performance as Tanya in The White Lotus. They were mesmerized as she blasted her way to a clumsy demise on a megayacht chartered by the fearsome Fab Five of Sicily in the final episode of the show’s second season. One of Tanya’s lines is now the stuff of meme legend: “These gays, they’re trying to murder me!”
Speaking about Tanya, but also possibly referring to her own trajectory, Coolidge said: “I feel bad for her, because she didn’t know what she was made of. She didn’t have that kind of faith in herself. Sometimes these scary things happen in life. And then you find out, in like two seconds, that you are a survivor and that you can really pull through for yourself, sometimes in a way that you never believed you could.” Then, with inimitable comic timing, she pitched her raspy voice ever so slightly so it sounded like her scatterbrained character on The White Lotus: “But then, of course, it didn’t quite end up going my way in the end, did it?”

Today’s mix:
Sona - First Five 2001 House / Progressive House
Well I'm back on my grind in these early 2000s Montréal club music mines and I managed to uncover this nifty, little anonymous mix that celebrates the five-year anniversary of a popular venue called Sona.
Here's some glowing liner notes about both the club and this particular mix's purpose:
Sona opened in February of 1996 as the first legal bar / after-hours club in Montreal. Its purpose has always been to offer the very best in music emerging from an ever-evolving club scene. Sona has managed to cruise through the fad phase, relentlessly striving to live up to its hard-earned legendary landmark status. It would be impossible to try and pinpoint a specific perfect Sona moment, for everyone seems to have his or her own favourite. We wouldn't dare claim that any compilation CD could ever achieve such a task. We just thought these few anthem tracks would bring back sweet memories to anyone who has been a part of this amazing ongoing party. If you were among us anytime during this crazy ride, you know it's true : the sun always shines at Sona. Here's to five more sunny years !
So, this CD's got some real house bangers from the late 90s and early 2000s, folks. It takes some time to get going, but it really starts finding its groove after the first third. French-sounding funky stuff from a duo called the Skeudymen that consisted of the prolific Frédéric De Backer; back-to-back cuts from Edinburgh's George Thomson, performing as both The Plastic Avengers and The Shutter Bug, with something sci-fi and futuristic and then something self-descriptively perfect called "Real Deal Party Feel;" and then a lovely trio at the end, with Chicago's DJ Sneak doing probably my favorite type of house music there is—that stringy and filtered disco-type shit—France's Didier Sinclair laying a passionate vocal sample over stabbing flute synths and a Euro-beachy bassline, and François Kevorkian going buckwild jazzy on his synthesizer to end the whole shebang.
Surprised there's no mention of who actually made this mix anywhere in this release's liner notes, but whoever it was ended up doing a pretty bang-up job of it; the transitions are solid and the selection's dope. Seems like they definitely did right by Sona here.
Also, check out this other early 2000s Montréal dance post I did recently about a yearly big venue rave event called Swirl.
Highlights:
The Skeudymen - "'Lectric Funk" The Plastic Avengers - "Chunkus Mahunkus" The Shutter Bug - "Real Deal Party Feel" DJ Sneak - "You Can't Hide From Your Bud" Didier Sinclair - "Lovely Flight" François K - "Time & Space"

Home - Peter Parker
Peter Parker x Reader
Summary : You’re left to do an English assignment that catches you off guard, but Peter may or may not have been your inspiration.
Tumblr media
Warnings: Cussing (let me know if you find any, though!)
Words: 3.2 k
What is home? The message was sprawled across the board as your English teacher, Mr. Gilloway stared at the class, eyebrows scrunched up and his hooked nose crinkled. The soft light bounced off of his bald head.
“Since you all like to complain about wanting to go home, you might as well write down what is home. You can either write it as a descriptive piece, because I’d live to know why you want to go so badly,” he said sarcastically, “Or whatever comes to mind. It’s due in a month, so Flash, you better not complain about not having completed your work. You will also have to present in front of the class just so I can hear your wonderful voices grace my god-awful days. Class dismissed.”
You had no idea as to what is home to you, as you’ve never felt at home wherever you go. It seemed as though you never stuck to one place. A million thoughts ran through your mind thinking of a solution as to how you were going to come up with an answer, when you meet up with your best friends, Ned Leeds and Peter Parker near the school’s overcrowded parking lot.
“Hey, Y/N! Are you ok? You look a bit.. distracted.” Ned stated, his voice laced with concern. Ned always looked out for you, right after Peter. The duo had welcomed you into their “super secret that no other soul should ever be told cult” with open arms, when you had first moved to Queens. Overtime, the three of you were inseparable, the school knowing you as the three who would be sitting in the quiet, snug corner of the cafeteria fighting over who was the actual hero in Star Wars.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine, just thrown ‘off the rails’, if that’s even a saying,” You created air quotes to try to emphasize it, “it’s just Mr. Gilloway being a pain in the ass with his ‘deep and meaningful projects’ that are supposed to bring us to a realization of some unknown idea to our ‘uneducated minds’, whatever he means.” The Polynesian boy smiled, his pudgy cheeks showing off the rosiness of his almond skin tone.
“Peter and I both told you not to take AP English and look at where it got you, huh,” he taunted, as you looked to see both of them give their signature ‘I told you so’ faces, with their eyebrows raised and an amused smile, “just goes to show that we’re always right.”
With a roll of your eyes, you moved on to go home,
“Yeah, yeah, thanks mom. I’m gonna head out now. See you in chem tomorrow.” Before you left to catch the subway, Peter grabbed your wrist and said,
“Wanna come over? May misses you and we’d love to have you for the evening.”
You quickly nodded in affirmation and sent your mom a text to let her know about your whereabouts. The ride to his place was the same as always, sharing the headphones to listen to AC/DC, you complaining about Flash being your lab partner, and Peter sharing the previous night’s events during his patrol. Everything felt right at the moment, as if he was your safety blanket. Peter had the ability to radiate this sense of comfort even if you were across the room from him.
The subway finally stopped at your final destination, and you soon found yourself in the small, cozy apartment. It was the same as always, the soft grey throw blanket draped over the back of the worn out brown couch, and the smell of charred bread in the air. It was simple, just like the family. You sent a simple wave to Peter’s Aunt May and followed Peter to his room to start on your Chemistry homework.
Hours later, there were papers filled with math calculations and Chemistry formulas scattering the small room, as Peter was munching on some cheese-flavored potato chips.
“Did you get seventeen moles of copper nitrate for number 8?” Peter inquired, causing you to let out a groan.
“It’s seventeen? I got twenty-nine. Pete, I’m a hopeless teenager who doesn’t understand a single thing about this right now,” You heard a chuckle across from you and looked up, only to find Peter staring at you, something was different about his expression, but you still threw you eraser at him. Peter simply replied,
“Instead of complaining, you could have just asked. Lemme see what’s wrong… Ah,” he went on to explain the confusing lesson, however everything he said became sets of useless words as you were focusing on what was happening to you. Your entire body filled with warmth, while your heart was beating feverishly, like you’d just ran a marathon. The constant feeling of elevation in your stomach was overbearing, it felt like the spark on a tungsten before it reached the gunpowder for fireworks. It was different to what authors wrote in their stories, it was so much more than what you’d imagine, but it didn’t feel like love. The constant overcame your mind until you heard Peter call your name,
“Y/N, Y/N, are you still alive? May’s calling us for dinner, it’s Thai Food Thursday.” For the rest of the night, you could feel yourself being distant and distracted from the conversation, all thanks to Peter.
A week later, you still hadn’t made any progress on your English paper, which made you dread English class even more than you had before. Your past made it harder to even get an understanding of what home even was when all you could think of was your father.
Your father was always distant from you and your mother, acting like a guest at a bed and breakfast where he was only there for the night. Some weeks, he’d have to leave for a business trip, not coming back for a few weeks, or at least you thought that until you found him at a city nearby while being on a class field trip the fifth grade. He was with a familiar woman who you’d known growing up, Aunt Lydia, your mother’s younger sister. It turned out that your father had become infatuated with her in the duration of his first marriage, eventually starting a new family with Aunt Lydia and being much happier with her. The news spread like wildfire in a forest, eventually getting to your mother last. It broke you to know that your father would rather spend his days with some other kids than with you, another woman instead of your mother. After a short 2 weeks, the two of you had packed your bags and moved to Queens to forget the past, making it seem as if everything you knew from before was now supposed to be thrown out of a window. The project was no use when now all you could think of was a cold space where tension was intermingled in the air, and pain stained into the deepest threads of the couch pillows when you thought of home.
The library was almost completely empty, which was usual considering that the people of New York had better things to do than spend their time at the library, except for you, Peter, and now Ned. It was your annual reader’s binge night, where you’d all spend the afternoon reading a book from start to end, and then go out for a sub at the small, family-owned deli from around the corner. It was a tradition, and allowed you to bask in each other’s presence without the hassle of having to talk. The sounds of iced coffee being sipped and the constant whoosh of pages could be heard throughout the day. After the author had infuriated you enough with their cliche-filled sci-fi novel, you looked up to break the silence, until the sight of the room stopped you. More specifically, Peter. The sunlight shining in through the gigantic windows had illuminated the small features of his fair, pale face, like the freckles that were sprinkled all over his nose and cheeks just as the course sugar on sugar cookies. His chestnut brown hair became an array of colors as the copper undertones shining through, as he was concentrating on the book before him. Peter’s state of peace made you feel safe, as if nothing bad was going to happen to you. The time flew by as if it were like seconds as you continued to take in his image, until you felt a twinge on the side of your head, looking to your side to find a plastic straw on the ground.
“Y/N, you can stare at Peter after finishing the book. Now hurry up or else Mr. Delmar’s is gonna close up shop before we even finish!” Ned exclaimed as he smirked at your actions. Peter softly chuckled as you flipped off Ned, before all three of you went back to the book. While you mindlessly flipped pages, all that you could ponder was the same weird feeling that you felt at Peter’s house. It was almost as if you belonged there, as if you weren’t an outcast who had came out of nowhere. There was something about the feelings you had that you couldn’t comprehend completely, but it was becoming more and more prominent to you each day. Whatever the universe is trying to tell me, it sure is fucking me over, you thought, just as you saw your best friends close their books. Peter saw your expression, it was evident that you were deep in thought, and asked,
“You okay, Y/N?” To which you simply replied in the most New York way possible,
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wanna go grabba sub now?”
You picked up the group’s sandwiches and headed over when you heard Ned and Peter talking about you,
“I don’t know, Ned, Y/N is hard to be around when she can’t even take a hint,” You stopped dead in your tracks, like gravity was pulling you down and you weren’t able to move your feet. It felt like the day at the school field trip, everything you once knew was fabricated and far from what you thought your friendship was.
“Peter, you’re going to have to tell her someday. It’s hurting you and it's probably gonna hurt her too in the future,” you took your chance and walked in before any more damage could be done to your friendship.
“Whatcha talkin’ about?” You said as you sat down. The two shook their heads, muttering words that you couldn’t make out, and started a new conversation. Throughout the rest of the day, you couldn’t help but wonder about what you’d done wrong, guilt and fear flowing through your veins as if your blood had been replaced with it.
You  invited Peter over the next day for dinner to repay him for when you ate at his house last time, and in hopes to try to mend whatever tension Peter was feeling. The dingy apartment that you’d been living in for the past 5 years was usually dull and quiet, your mom still hadn’t comprehended how her sister could betray her and you were left trying to feel the same way as she did when you were younger, when your family wasn’t broken. While eating the burnt ends of your chicken parm, the English project was still running on your mind. Of course Peter knew you were thinking about it, so naturally, he had to ask how the English assignment was coming along.
“I can’t connect with anyone or anything that relates to my home. I am genuinely convinced that literally everyone hates me, and soon I’ll be living alone with my three cats in a studio apartment!” You complained as your arms flew up in exaggeration. Peter, on the other hand, seemed frustrated, with his eyes in annoyance and his knuckles turning white from clenching them so hard. Peter cried,
“Well, maybe if you would just open up and try to let more people into your life, then you wouldn’t be here right now!” At this point, the tension you tried to get rid of was now a thick fog that couldn’t be seen through.
“That’s impossible, Peter! You, out of all people, know it’s hard for me to get close with someone, when practically no one finds me bearable,” you looked at him with anger, “not even you.” Peter was taken aback,
“How did you hear that?”
“So it was true,” you scoffed as you felt the wet trail of plump tears run down your cheeks, “gee, thanks a lot, Pete.” He stood up, intimidating you, as he boomed,
“Well, yeah, it is. All you ever do is push away anyone whoever tries to get close to you. You’ve built this thick barrier around everyone and it stupid. Grow up and stop acting like a four year-old, it's annoying,” and immediately walked out the tiny apartment’s door.
You sunk down in your chair, the tears flowing faster and add onto the pain-ridden apartment. There goes someone else I love, you pondered, I love you, Peter, more than I’ve loved anyone else.
Your English assignment was now due in a week and a half's worth of time and you’d barely had an outline or a single idea as to what you wanted to write about. For multiple nights, you would just sit in front of your grey, busted laptop and stare at the blank document until you’d figured it was now time to sleep. Multiple sentences that were once on the document soon disappeared by the click of a button immediately after.
As sleep-deprived teenagers rushed to leave the room, you went up to Mr. Gilloway, intimidated by the hunch on his back that formed every time he was scrolling down the New York Times about another political outburst from the Senator. It wasn’t that Mr. Gilloway was bad in person, it was just that he tended to be very unfiltered. All it took was one glance from him and you knew that you were going to take in the bitter and harshful words about not working on the assignment. But you took the leap anyway, and took all the courage you had in you to ask,
“Mr. Gilloway, I don’t know what to write for the assignment. I keep thinking about it, but nothing is coming to mind and I really have no clue as to what home is.” Squeezing you eyes, you braced for the string of words that were meaningless to him.
“Well, what was it like for you to be at home? Anyone particular who comes to mind? Or perhaps a memory that just replays over and over in your head? Remember, Y/N that home is not a definitive object, you can make it anything you want. It could be the simplest idea, or something over the top, but that is what it means to you. I have full trust in you to go with your guts and write wha’ is home to you,” Mr. Gilloway gently replied. His response was out of character compared to who he really was. It was unrecognizable, sympathy and gentleness was the last thing that would come across anyone’s mind when they thought of Mr. Gilloway. Unable to form words, you nodded your head, only to hear, “Now go, I need to catch up on what our jackass of a Senator we have right now.”
It wasn’t until you got onto your laptop once again when you knew what to write about. You finally had an idea.
It was finally the day of the presentation and your nerves got the best of you. The past week was more muted, with evenings spent writing the English assignment, and the daytime spent studying in the library in hopes to avoid Peter. It was also the most emotionally draining week, knowing you couldn’t just go up and tell him how you really felt about him.
Y/N, it’s your turn. And Flash, puh-LEASE keep the flirting for someplace else, my classroom is not a ‘Singles Mingle’,” Mr. Gilloway said. The voice at the back of your head kept telling you don’t mess up, don’t mess up, don’t mess up. The anxiety of sharing something so intimate with a group of bored teenagers was nerve wracking, so much so that your hands were quivering.
“Home is an abstract idea, and to most people, it is their place to go to sleep, eat, and repeat. In my entire life, I'd never felt like I was at home until just recently when I came to know how I know I am at home. Home is a blend of emotions, where there are multiple feelings every time you’re there, A sense of belonging, where no matter how different, broken, or mismanaged  a person is, they still know that the very spot will always let them be themselves. Home is where a person feels comfort and safety, where they know that they will be supported and consoled through all the times you’ve been through. A sense of adoration that lingers in the air, making a person feel loved for who they are. The idea that a person knows who they are when they’re at this place, or with this person, makes us realize that this very place is our home. My home is with someone who I’ve known for a while, and even a glance into their brown eyes makes me feel complete. As they always say, home is where the heart lies.”
You looked around the room to see blank stares and an unusual smile from Mr. Gilloway, but it was relieving to feel the overbearing weight of not knowing yourself being lifted off your shoulders.
Once class had ended, you heard your name being called by none other than Peter.
“Was your speech about me?” Peter had a look of desperation and hope, “I feel like home to you?” How’d he listen? You thought, eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
“I asked Mr. Gilloway,” Peter had read your mind, “Y/N, I only said I couldn’t bear you because I’m so deeply in love with you, but you never see that. It’s kind of hard to be friendzoned all the time, y’know?”
The moment you had awaited all along finally came in the least expected way, nor was it how everyone else described it to be. There were no fireworks in the background but instead, it was just as if the world had stopped around you.
“I love you too, Peter,” you whispered.
“So is it true?” With a simple nod and a small smile, you said,
“Yeah, it is about you, Peter.” A soft smile creeps up his face as he pulls you into his arms. It felt right, as if your body was perfectly molded to fit into his embrace. You decided to take the risk and pulled away, placing your hands over his pillowy cheeks, and pulled him towards you. You placed your lips on his, they were soft and smooth, with a hint of vanilla from the chapstick you made him use after seeing how rough they were a few months back. Peter kissed back, trying to empty all the love and adoration he had kept inside of him.
You couldn’t tell what the future held for you two, but you made a vow, right then and there that you would protect him with your entire heart, help him after his patrol’s and night, and most importantly, keep him in your heart for the rest of your life.
This was your home, right here with Peter.
A/N: Hi! I hope you liked this piece, I’ve had a a writer’s block for almost 2 years now, so to write this was a bit of a struggle, but it’s all good! The Rise of Ultraman #1 (Comic Book Review)
Tumblr media
(Writers: Kyle Higgins & Mat Groom; Art: Francesco Manna (Main Story), Michael Cho (Ultra Q), Gurihiru (Kaiju Steps); Colors: Espen Grundetjern (Main Story); Letterer: VC’s Ariana Maher)
Tsuburaya Productions’ push to increase Ultraman’s profile in the West continues with the new miniseries from Marvel Comics, The Rise of Ultraman. True to its title, this mini is set up as an extended origin for giant extraterrestrial hero of the title. In this first issue we’re thrust into the operations of the United Science Patrol (USP), an international organization dedicated to eliminating the threat of Kaiju that are somehow breaching through to Earth.
[Full Review Under the Cut]
The general status quo of the 1966 Ultraman series is used as a basis to build off and deviate from with details from later series mixed in to further flesh out the world of this comic. The most striking difference comes from how the USP operates compared to the SSSP of the show and how that informs the tone in this first issue. While the SSSP were a public organization in the show, the USP here are highly secretive. The implication in this issue puts their management of Kaiju threats in a comparable light to how the Men in Black dealt with aliens, down to mindwiping civilians caught up in the events. Informative captions about the organization emphasize that secrecy with words blocking out key terms about what the USP are fighting, how many bases they have, and what powers their advanced “K-Ray” weapons.
Tumblr media
That secrecy towards the reader echoes in the perspective of the main character, Kiki Fuji. She provides our eyes into operations of the USP from her role as a new cadet with zero field experience. The story builds around her experience and during her time on a field mission. She thought being brought into an organization like this would be her chance to know more about the threats the Kaiju pose to Earth, but she’s only hit a wall of further secrets. Kiki makes her frustrations known to her superiors, only to be told to focus on the mission at hand or on her main job of repairing equipment she’s barely allowed to understand the inner workings of.
The one friend she can vent to about any of these frustrations is also someone she got hired into the USP over, Shin Hayata. Their friendship gets presented as strained here. They got on the USP’s radar when they invented a device that can track Kaiju energy signatures and wanted to join. After being passed over, Shin’s left dealing with Kaiju intrusions by arriving at the scene uninvited thanks to his own tech. He has no idea why he got passed over for the job and ends up letting his frustration out against Kiki while they’re sharing dinner. He wants to defend the world from the threats he knows are out there and doesn’t see a point in sitting idly by until the USP might change their minds about him. The dinner’s a strong scene between the two friends and a solid display for Manna’s art, as the mood of Kiki and Shin’s back-and-forth gets conveyed effectively through their facial expressions.
Tumblr media
Manna’s art throughout, with Grundetjern’s colors, is fittingly dynamic for a story about people with laser guns fighting monsters. The field missions we see Kiki go on with her captain, Muramatsu, are given a tenser air to them than the rest of the issue. One of the strongest moments in the main story of the issue comes from when that tension gets released by the first on-panel appearance of Shin, when he saves Kiki and Muramatsu from a Kaiju. His pose in this appearance speaks to him being a bit cocky, like that act of saving them is more than enough to prove why he deserves a spot in the USP. The most striking imagery comes from the opening and closing scenes of the issue that portray humanity’s brief contact with the Ultras, who get displayed in a more literal form of how the many Ultraman shows often describe them, Giants of Light. That portrayal from Manna and Grundetjern delivers on the impact for these mighty beings that we otherwise don’t get much from in this issue.
While the main story has some great moments and setup the miniseries going forwards, it’s not the part of this issue that impressed me most. That honor goes to the Ultra Q back up story. Taking its title from the Tsuburaya series that preceded Ultraman, this backup follows the duo of Satoru Ichinotani and Captain Kyoko Kato from the Japanese paranormal investigation force Q. They’re tracking down the Kaiju Bemular (the first to appear in the original Ultraman) in Paris and end up running into France’s equivalent agency along the way with seeds planted for a mystery that looks like it will run in parallel with the present day main storyline of the miniseries. What makes the Ultra Q part of this issue fully engrossing in the art by Michael Cho. The art’s all black and white to line up with the Ultra Q series. The homage to the past doesn’t stop there as everything from the positioning of characters to the use of shadow feels right out of a classic sci-fi tv series. The most charming part of this comes to how Bemular’s design in these pages echoes the artificiality of the monster-suits used in tokusatsu while still feeling like a living creature on the page.
Tumblr media
The last thing to note about the issue are the three one-page Kaiju Steps gag comics drawn by the art team Gurihiru. They star a cute chibi-version of a recurring Ultraman kaiju, the friendly Pigmon, and Cadet Pierre, a French agent of the USP. Not much to say about them outside of being decently funny with pleasantly expressive art from Gurihiru.
Tumblr media
Between the three featured stories within, The Rise of Ultraman #1 makes an engaging modernized take on the Ultra Series from Higgins, Groom, and the collected artists. I’m fully prepared for wherever this reimagining goes from here, especially given what’s teased in the final two-page spread of the book from Ed McGuinness.

Top 20 BEST Animated Series of the 2010s-6th Place
Can someone please explain how it is possible that #6 can somehow be one of the best shows in the 2010s, yet somehow it can also be one of the worst?
#6-Rick and Morty (2013-)
The Plot: A nihilistic scientist named Rick Sanchez returns to his daughter and joins her family to the dismay of...well, everyone else. The one who gets the most anxiety is Rick’s grandson, Morty, who ends up getting dragged alongside Rick on adventures across the cosmos and even the multiverse. From there, they face dangerous aliens, Rick’s old enemies, and even evil alternate versions of themselves. Not because those threats are a danger to the universe. It's because they’re just a pain in the ass to deal with.
Now that I got the plot out of the way, I want to take the chance to briefly rant about why Rick and Morty is one of the worst things that could have come to television. It has nothing to do with the show itself (far from it, in fact). The real reason why Rick and Morty is the worst has everything to do with its fandom. I know, I know. I shouldn’t use a show’s fandom to judge it. Because if I did, then half the series on this list would be blasted into the sun. But the Rick and Morty fandom is the one exception to that rule. Because unlike most toxic fandoms that stick with being a-holes to other people on the internet, the Rick and Morty fandom actually affects real life. They take quotes from the show that were fun to say and repeat them so much that those quotes become the most annoying words created by man. This fandom also drove McDonalds up a wall because Rick briefly mentions how delicious the Szechuan sauce was, and the “fans” ended up breaking McDonalds when they briefly brought it back. But nothing, and I mean NOTHING, is more annoying than how these people react when someone says they don’t like the show.
You see, according to the fandom, “Rick and Morty operates on a higher form of intelligence that far exceeds all shows known to man. If you don’t enjoy it, then you’re just a big old dumb fjdlfjkdlfjoidsahjipfojewoitufd9gt9geijo parwfu9--” SHUT THE F**K UP! Ok?! Shut up! Just shut up! Because Rick and Morty is NOT the smartest T.V. show on the planet. It’s not even CLOSE to the most intelligent show on television. It’s smarter than most shows. I’ll give it that. But if you want to ask me which show was the most intelligent, I will more than willingly say Futurama. You know. The show is actually written by people with three PhDs and seven master's degrees. Hell, I’d be more willing to say that The Amazing World of Gumball is smarter than Rick and Morty. That’s right. I wholeheartedly believe that the show aimed for children-F**KING CHILDREN-is smarter than the show aimed for adults. And guess what, Rick and Morty fans! It doesn't require Stephen Hawking's levels of intelligence to enjoy the show. You can easily be a C+ high school student and still think the show is good. I should know because I’ve caught classmates who are C+ students watching the show while IN CLASS! AND THEY ENJOYED EVERY MINUTE OF IT! NOT BECAUSE IT WAS BRILLIANT! NOT BECAUSE IT WAS A MASTERPIECE SENT BY THE BIG GUY HIMSELF! BUT BECAUSE IT IS LIKE EVERY OTHER SHOW THAT IS AIMED FOR ADULTS! WITH LOW BROW AND HIGH BROW HUMOR, GRATUITOUS VIOLENCE, BUTT UGLY ANIMATION, AND CHARACTERS WHO ACT LIKE A**HOLES TO EACH OTHER BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT ADULTS LIKE TO SEE ON TELEVISION!
>SCREAMS WITH INSANITY<
>Huff<
>Puff<
Man, that’s twice in a row when a show has nearly driven me to the brink of insanity. That can’t be any good.
Aw well. Not that I’ve got that rant out of the way, allow me to actually talk about the show itself and why it actually is pretty amazing.
First and foremost is the show’s comedy. While the jokes aren’t “brilliant masterpieces,” they are jokes that get you thinking from time to time. They also come pretty fast, so even when one dies, another funnier joke immediately comes after. This show also dabbles in two different senses of humor: Absurdity and being super dark. The way absurd and dark humor works are by giving viewers no other reaction other than laughing at a situation. Because how else would you react to squirrels running the government or the idea that Hitler cured cancer in an alternate dimension? I mean, other than being confused and disgusted by things such as that. This is why humor, like most things, is subjective. Not everyone will find the same things funny, and, understandably, they don’t. I personally can’t stop laughing in most episodes of Rick and Morty, but I would never verbally attack another person for saying something different. So chill the f**k out when a person says they don’t think the show is funny! Besides, other cool pros that come from Rick and Morty.
One spectacular thing is the show’s attention to detail. And I don’t just mean in terms of animation. The stories are pretty airtight most of the time, and rarely do I find a plot hole within. The best example is the twist in “The Ricklantis Mixup.” The episode itself is already pretty good, but having prior knowledge of the final big reveal leads to looking at specific scenes in a new light. As for the animation, there’s also great detail within it. Like in the background, to be more exact. The show goes out of its way to make each new world that Rick and Morty visits look as unique as possible, which should really be the goal for a sci-fi series if you ask me. And can we give a round of applause to whoever designs the characters in this show? I mean, the characters look hideous (which is something I never understood in adult animation. Seriously, who was the idiot that thought it was a good idea that you have to make your characters look as ugly as possible to be considered for adults?), but each character in this series--background and foreground--looks unique. Usually, most shows stick to having similar models reused and redesigned to give the illusion that the background characters are different. But in Rick and Morty? There is rarely a time when one creature looks the same as the other. And when they do, it’s usually for a purpose such as an alien species that looks the same or making an identical alternate version of Rick and Morty.
Speaking of, what is by far the best thing about Rick and Morty is...well, Rick and Morty. These two not only have a great dynamic, but they even have great chemistry with each other. Because whenever a show advertises its central hook being its dynamic duo, the same pair must have perfect interactions. And boy, is it hilarious seeing these bounce off of one another. Their synergy is always hilarious, and at times it can be surprisingly heartwarming. In fact, what I love most about these two is how they sort of learn from each other. Rick is still a nihilistic a-hole to those around him, but he seems to back off the most when he’s around Morty (most of the time). And while Morty still puts his foot down when it comes to Rick’s pure unadulterated...Rickness, he also has moments where he seems to share his grandfather's nihilistic views. I rarely ever seen this, as most dynamic duos keep their intended personalities to keep audiences entertained. And while I’ve heard fans complain about how the show makes Rick more human and Morty more like a Rick, I personally enjoy how much of an engaging character study these two represent.
Unfortunately, while Rick and Morty are easily the most intriguing characters in their series, they are also the only characters worth mentioning. Summer is fine, I guess, but most of the time, it feels like the writers aren’t sure what to do with her. Is she a slacker? A cliche teenage girl? Rick’s number one fan? I don’t know because most of the time, it feels like her personality is dependent on what the writers want in an episode. She isn’t bad, but some consistency would be nice. As for other characters, there really aren't that many who are worth mentioning. Most of them are either bit characters who serve the purpose of making a joke or are just one-off villains that our “heroes” face. Now there isn’t anything wrong with that, especially considering the latter. After all, when you watch Bugs Bunny screw around with someone who's wronged him, it’s always that Wascally Wabbit you remember the most. Still, I wish there were a couple more characters the show could invest in. And I know, last time I complained about a show that had too many characters. However, the opposite extreme isn’t that great either. Personally, I feel as though a series should have a moderately sized cast, where there are enough personalities to work off of, and you won’t have to recycle ideas you’ve used with the characters you already have.
And seeing as how we’re on the topic of characters, there are two individuals that I need to talk about. In fact, these two characters are easily the worst thing about Rick and Morty (aside from the fandom). Those characters are Beth and Jerry. Sweet mother of all that is holy, these two are downright insufferable! For some reason, the writers think it would be entertaining to have a married couple always argue and bicker with each other. It isn’t. In fact, every time an episode moves away from Rick and Morty and decides to focus on these two, the show’s quality plummets on a lot of notches. You’ll want to see them get a divorce. You’ll PRAY that they get a divorce. And (actual spoilers) when they finally get a divorce in season 3, do you want to know what the worst part is? They are somehow worse apart than they are together (spoilers over). And you can argue who you think is worse all you want, but to me, the worst character is easily Beth. I personally don’t mind Jerry all that much. At his best, he’s hilariously pathetic, has a great dynamic with Rick, and I legitimately feel bad for him when the universe seems to kick him when he’s down. Can he get a little grating at times? Yes. Absolutely. But while Jerry can be annoying, Beth can be a downright psychotic moron. She will willingly endanger her family, all in the efforts of pleasing a narcissistic a**hole of a father who consistently has a god complex. And when a person points this out to her, she will insult them and point out how “great” it is to have her father back again. Even though Rick didn’t seem like that great of a father anyway. It is physically and psychologically unhealthy for Beth to have these disillusions, and it isn’t until four seasons does she actually tries to show some backbone. Which I still don’t believe because it feels like it won’t last by how quick it is.
And seeing that we’re on my own personal hang-ups with the show, there’s one last topic that I want to cover. And it’s a topic that, to my knowledge, nobody else is bothered by. This problem affects me personally, and I want to give a word of warning to those who might not actually feel the same way. And that’s the fact that Justin Roiland is not the great of a voice actor that he thinks he is. This doesn’t mean he’s a bad voice actor because he's far from it. In fact, I can’t even hear the similarities between his voice for Rick and for Morty. But there is a problem: Justin Roiland has two modes. It’s either his normal voice or his high pitched voice. Both with minimal modulation, and it’s the latter that he seems to focus on the most when he voices 80% of the characters. The problem is that I not only think his high-pitched voice is annoying but with how consistently Roiland uses it, it will always break the immersion for me. Because I’m not hearing a unique character. I’m hearing Justin Roiland doing the same high pitched voice for nearly every character he voices. Just look at Seth Macfarlane and the characters he voices. You can tell it’s him, but he at least offers different modulations for each character (If you don’t believe me, then compare some of his famous roles with Justin Roiland’s).
While we’re still talking Justin Roiland’s acting, it’s also his improv that could use a little workshop. Now, for the most part, the improvisation is pretty good in the show. Like actual good improv, it feels natural within the dialogue exchanges, and you wouldn’t know until someone else points it out. However, there are times when Roiland’s improv can feel like verbal barfing. It’s fine when he voices Rick’s drunken rants, but for the Interdimensional Cable episodes? Yeah, needless to say, it can get a little noticeable. So noticeable that even the characters point out how blatant it is within the episode. Again, this is something that bothers me personally. To my knowledge, there isn’t anyone else who complains about this aspect of the show, which is perfectly fine. I just feel like other people should get a word of warning before they dive right in.
So is Rick and Morty the godsend of a series that surpasses all other television shows? F**k no. No series that has ever been made is 100% perfect. Not even the good ones. And if you disagree, then you are in denial over how many faults a show has. For instance, Rick and Morty have plenty of issues. There’s not that many likable characters, it has the worst cartoon couple ever with Beth and Jerry, and Justin Roiland needs to work on his acting despite being an already good actor. That’s everything wrong with Rick and Morty in a nutshell. But despite these problems, the show still has phenomenal attention to detail, hilarious comedy, and the best dynamic duo in recent memory. So while it isn’t the perfect show that its fans believe it is, it is still pretty damn good. And that alone is good enough for me.
(Just do yourself a favor and avoid joining the fandom. It’s already too late for those poor bastards who are already in too deep, but it isn’t too late for you!)
