My Thoughts on Juvia and Gray’s Relationship.
May contain spoilers for the anime & 100yq manga but I’ll be as vanilla about it as possible. This is a long one so get comfy.
A few years ago, I used to be upset at the fact that Gruvia took so long to happen. But now that I’m older and I’ve hyper fixated on the couple long enough, I’ve learned to appreciate their relationship for what it is now and for what it was in the beginning. From the start I’ve always shipped Gruvia but I never expected them to be together in the first place, PLUS I only shipped them because I honestly just liked the idea of them being together. Liking the idea of a couple and the couple actually being good together is two different things and I knew that. My initial thought was “how funny would it be if they actually got together”. Kinda like a gag if you will. But overtime I started to REALLY appreciate their build up. There are plenty of couples out there in popular anime who’s relationships parallel to Gruvia, (the girl or guy is deeply in love and the other party pays them no mind). But what I really hate about relationships like that is when they get slapped together at the end just to please an audience. If Mashima did the same thing, I could honestly say I probably wouldn’t be shipping Juvia and Gray to this day, but luckily for me and other Gruvia fans he did not go that route. People say that fans forced Gruvia to be canon which is just not true since FROM THE BEGINNING of the series, Gray was told by the fortune teller that he would be tangled up with a water woman in the near future. Plus the simple fact that their characters were designed to match each others (water and ice), Juvia is also a semi-yandere (I only say semi because Juvia won’t actually do anything to hurt Gray or the others she cares about) and Gray is a Tsundere. In the beginning Gray was honestly just a dick to Juvia, but that was more for comedic effect which me being a hard core Gruvia fan at the time, sometimes I didn’t appreciate. But now a days I really do appreciate the comedy between the two characters because I’ve realized there is a good balance between their comedy and the seriousness of how they actually feel about each other. You could even call Gruvia a slow burn but in my eyes the pacing is perfect and very realistic.
Tumblr media
Here are my thoughts on Gruvia from Gray’s perspective. Gray was pretty compassionate towards Juvia when they first met, even though they were enemies, Juvia of course gets love at first sight. As they get to know each other, Juvia’s love grows more and more intense and in Gray’s eyes it comes across as pushy. Though I personally saw her love for him being a “I see you need love, let me love you” type thing. He slowly (very slowly lmao) warms up to Juvia and they start going on jobs together and forming a close friendship, to the point where they would rather go on jobs together instead of with the rest of the team.
And then the plot starts to get a bit heavier and so does their relationship. Juvia and Gray have multiple occasions where they make protecting each other their main mission. But two particular scenes stood out to me in the last two anime arcs. Juvia sacrifices her relationship with Gray to do what was best for him, we all know the scene so I won’t go into details for the sake of time and spoilers. But in that moment that’s when I decided I didn’t ship them just because the idea was cute, I shipped them because they NEEDED each other. Juvia finally understood Gray and his history, while Gray not only understood his festering feelings for her BUT he got the closure he deserved of his family, all thanks to Juvia. Although there were subtle hints that Gray started to develop feelings way earlier on than this scene, THIS is when he knew for sure how he felt.
The last and finally scene that pretty much sealed the deal for them being my otp was when they both sacrifice themselves to save each other. **cries 😭** We got a full length scene of them damn near confessing how much they meant to each other. We all know what happens at the end of that scene, then Gray makes a promise to Juvia and that was to take her feelings more seriously. The thought of him loosing someone else he loved definitely shocked him into reality and broke that Tsundere spell that was casted on to him by the creators…well kinda. In the anime Gray eventually confesses his feelings in a round about way and I HATED IT! I just wanted him to lay it all out there on the table. But maturing is realizing that, that actually wasn’t the confession and that’s apparent in 100yq.
Although I would love for them to just be together already, I appreciate Mashima and Ueda taking their time with this couple and really putting emphasis on their shared character/relationship development. I also appreciate that we get this development through Gray’s perspective, it adds a bit more to them as a couple. In conclusion, I’m lonely and I want what they have. No but seriously I’m soaking up every bit we get from Gruvia! Since Gruvia days is coming up, I had planned on doing a relationship/couple analysis from Gray’s perspective but this honestly sums it up lol!

Gray and Juvia Need Independence
This one is going to be more rant than my other discussions, but I rally wanted to talk about this.
THERE WILL BE SPOILERS FOR 100 YEAR QUEST I want to get this across first before I start. I really do love this couple and the bits of screentime they have together. They were my favorite couple for a long period of time and they were both my favorite set of characters, until Gajeel and Levy took their place in my heart. However over the years something has become very obvious and that is the fact that these two *need* each other in every scene they are in. I must sound like a hypocrite when I stated that I enjoy Gajeel and Levy much more now, but there is one key difference. Gajeel is basically a secondary character while Levy was always meant to be a background side character, with basically no backstory. On Gray and Juvia’s end it is completely different. Gray is a center character in the series and Juvia is a secondary character introduced early on.  There are very few scenes where one is not distracted by the other, even less later on in the show. It makes sense to some extent why Juvia would all be for Gray, but she needs more to live for. One of my favorite scenes is her in the Tower of Heaven with Lucy and their showdown against Vidaldus. It shows her truly wanting to be a member of Fairy Tail and her care for Lucy even if she saw her as a rival. When it comes to Gray, the last fight that I can think of that was truly his was him against Rufus. It had nothing to do with Juvia, had nothing to do with Natsu. Just him fighting against a man who embarrassed him. Even Gray’s fight with his own father was interjected by Juvia. Though, this one is one that I can forgive as it gave a really powerful moment for both characters. However, even up till now in 100 years quest Juvia or another character has gotten in every one of Gray’s fights.  Juvia needs Gray and it seems the opposite goes as well, but it is shown in every scene thrown at us. Juvia cannot be without Gray and recent Gray scenes now do not seem to give him the individuality that he needs. His character has run out of arc and so all that Mashima can give him is a romantic lover when there is so much potential and so much to explore. I would love to know how you all feel though. Maybe its just me who thinks these things. As stated, I still do enjoy this couple just not nearly as much as before.
I’ll see you all in the Deep End!!

as a fan of fairy tail am i the only one that can't continue to watch it because of all the gruvia/juvia scenes?
I really relate to you, my friend. During my last rewatch of Fairy Tail, I actually had to skip through most of her scenes; they were that painful. I skipped her entire introduction fight against Gray in the Phantom Lord arc. I watched enough of her to remind myself of my eternally burning hatred for her and her ship though.
I totally feel you though: I don't think I'll watch FT 100YQ when it comes to anime form because the rampant, blatant, canon gr///via would completely ruin it for me. There would be no escaping it unlike with the first iteration of Fairy Tail.
And I don't think you and I are being overdramatic, as some Pros might say. Do they really want to shame us for being completely disturbed and unamused by a toxic, unhealthy yet heavily lauded and promoted ship? If they want to, that's their prerogative. But it's honestly draining of your mental health to have your eyeballs bombarded by a ship where an abusive woman finally chained up her browbeaten, manipulated, gaslit, Stockholm Syndrome-d victim.

The fact that Juvia moved her scar from her heart just to match Gray is disgusting.
Actually she didnt even have to keep that scar. Her body is made out of water. She can just remove it. But instead she moved it just to match Gray.

out of the big 4 het/canon fairy tail pairings jerza is by Far the worst imo like. he needs to leave her alone i'm so serious and the fact that mashima wrote in a 7 year age gap for no reason is Not helping... erzas ass is NINETEEN the first time jellal makes an open pass at her i don't care that they used to be the same age it is fucking weird. gruvia is a close second though because while yes we objectify men here sir and i live to serve women juvia's creepiness is really just too much like at a certain point it starts to feel really gross and the fact that gray seems to fall for her by the end of the anime/manga just reeks of coercion. not even bringing up how genuinely awful juvia's character writing is she gets like 5 minutes of being interesting before getting instantly reduced to a creepy stan who completely revolves around gray and has less depth than the average bossfight of the week. i guess its equality that erza and mirajane are some of the best characters in this story (which is admittedly a low bar considering half of their personality is being subjected to the most voyeuristic shots possible) so mashima had to balance it out by making juvia one of the worst

They stay on Juvia’s dick like dang back up bro! Always finding Juvia related posts. Must be boring on the anti side that you have to do this. Pathetic. Why not just stay writing on it on your sad ass blog. People who prefer to actively research something they claim to hate will always be weird to me. Imagine looking back at your life at 40/50 years old knowing you did such a thing. Pathetic.

The Case for Fairy Tail’s Death Fake-Outs
I think Craftsdwarf put it best in how Manga like Fairy Tail often utilize these shocks to increase reader interest since they often live or die by the brutalities of the Manga industry.
Even so, these moments can feel more than a little… clickbait-y where they're leading you on. However, I feel like giving a lot of these their due. As what they lack in actual character loss, they make up for it in character gain.
1. Erza merges with the Tower of Heaven which would kill here and seemingly sees a future where her guildmates are coming apart at the seams over her passing, least of all being Natsu.
She doesn't die but it gives her the perspective needed to make progress as a character when she sees what she means to others. It fits with an arc that's all about facing her past demons and letting others into her heart.
2. Lyon seemingly blowing up with Racer works to show how he’s truly turned over a new leaf after being Gray’s nemesis.
3. Perhaps Wendy’s defining moment for me was when F.A.C.E. had to be exploded on sight by Carla. Yes, her kicking Ezel’s ass with Dragon Force was a sight to behold but it was afterwards that cemented her growth and cemented my adoration for her.
Wendy could’ve ran away herself or, more likely, grabbed Carla and got to safety. However, she realized at the time that FACE needed to be stopped before it was too late. So she choose to stay with her closest friend and do what would’ve likely killed her. Not because she thought herself as disposable but because she knew she was valuable. As a friend. As a wizard.
Fans may complain that Doranbolt’s rescue undermines this moment but her dying wasn’t the point. It was her having the bravery to not abandon Carla to die alone, her bravery to face certain death for the sake of stopping Tartaros. She never accounted for any last minute rescues. This was it as far as she was concerned.
4. Now for the Alverez Arc, starting with Gajeel. Bloodman’s suicide attack incites a moment not unlike Erza’s above where Gajeel takes stock of his life in what seems to be the end of it. It highlights how he went from a rebel without a cause to a true Fairy Tail guildmate as well as cement his love for Levy.
5. Juvia and Lucy’s both are similar but also incite Gray’s eventual confrontation with Etherious Natsu Dragneel, leading to a sort of closure for the former young man.
6. The only real one that does rub the wrong way is that of Makarov’s supposed final Fairy Law casting. Part of it does come from how while the other characters feel like there’s more to gain from them, the Guild Master himself has always been an older father figure with all the cornerstone’s a of Mentor.
The Mentor death, be it at the beginning or near end of a story, is cliched... but for good reason. In a coming of age story, this is the metaphorical moment where the characters can’t fall back on any wise, old coots for emotional or battle support.
This does feel like a weird editorial mandate considering how much time had passed between his presumed death and his revival. Maybe if he was shown to be sick and said to have been in a coma where there was no telling if he’d pull through, that’d at least work.
It’s not as deal breaking as some make it out to be but I do see how it would sour people on this arc. The better kind are the ones that less so make us hope they made it out or at least give us some character growth. Less so are like, “Yeah, I survived so let’s move on.”
