I think Jon Snow's assassination is confirmation that Jeyne Poole is headed to Braavos.
As Theon points out in the TWoW sample chapter, if mutiny had not happened at the Wall, the charade would be up with Jon Snow noticing that Jeyne is not Arya. And there's no reason for anyone to take Jeyne Poole to Braavos.
Pay it, aye, thought Theon. Pay it with false coin. Jon Snow would see through the imposter surely at once. Lord Stark’s sullen bastard had known Jeyne Poole, and he had always been fond of his little half-sister Arya. - Theon, TWoW
Justin Massey, however, has lost his lands and Stannis is ready to reward him only if he returns. Stannis also declares that Asha Greyjoy is already married and Massey thinks that Stannis is overconfident and will be defeated.
With Jon Snow now dead, I can see Justin Massey having designs on Arya Stark and trying to claim Winterfell that way. And Jeyne would prefer getting far away from the Boltons rather than staying in Westeros/The Wall. Ironically Braavos is where Jon Snow wanted to send the real Arya. And yes, Alysane Mormont may continue accompanying 'Arya Stark' to Braavos.
And because Jon Snow is dead/being resurrected - whatever - Justin Massey is going to travel on from Castle Black (CB) to Eastwatch-By-The-Sea (EBTS) without Jeyne ever meeting Jon.
Jeyne would however know of what happened to the Lord Commander or the 'Black Bastard of the Wall' as he's known on Braavos. And that's information she's most surely sharing with the real Arya Stark when they meet.
And that's one of the chapters I am most looking forward to. Jeyne and Arya meeting after some two plus years, two kids who knew each other in Winterfell. And their differences now.
And if Justin Massey is able to travel via CB to EBTS that means the situation at the Wall should have stabilized a bit with Stannis' people (The Kingsmen/Queensmen) having some semblance of power or control. The only POV who can give us all this - the situation at the Wall, what is happening with Jon, Justin and Jeyne passing through etc. - is Melisandre. I am expecting a lot of Melisandre POV chapters in TWoW.

Do you think that the Masseys might have fought for the Targaryens and that Justin Massey was Robert's squire as a hostage? Also, do you have any theories on why Justin is a Ser when he has lands lost? Like is he from a cadet branch, might the Masseys have been reduced in rank from lords, like the Heddles or the Conningtons (which I find less likely as they weren't betraying their liege), was he maybe an heir of a cousin but has been passed over for supporting Stannis?
It's certainly possible that the Masseys (assuming there were any men of fighting age, at least) fought for the Targaryens during Robert's Rebellion. The Masseys are a Crownlands family, after all, and because the rulers of this region are sworn directly to the Iron Throne, at least some of its families defended the Targaryens during the rebellion (like the Rykkers and Thornes). Too, the Massey family pre-Conquest had closer ties to the Targaryens than to Storm's End, and post-Conquest participated in at least the first century and a half of Targaryen court life: as masters of law under Aegon I and Jaehaerys I, as courtiers to Rhaenyra Targaryen, and as (albeit briefly, perhaps historically unofficially) at least one member of the Kingsguard (and, though hardly positively, as a champion of Maegor the Cruel during the latter's trial of seven). So I would say to the extent House Massey still existed as a lordly power at the time of Robert's Rebellion, it's not entirely unreasonable to think its lord, and perhaps other Massey men, fought for Aerys II and the Targaryen crown.
As far as Ser Justin specifically goes, though ... it's virtually impossible to speculate much at all about his background or dynastic standing. The entire backstory Stannis provides on Justin is that Massey "once served my brother Robert as squire and acquired his appetite for female flesh", without acknowledging why Massey had come to squire for Robert in the first place. Asha, for her part, merely notes that "Massey's own ancestral holdings, far to the south, were lost to him, so he must needs make an advantageous marriage or resign himself to being no more than a knight of the king's household". It is worth noting that Stannis' loyalists seem to have been subjected to a general attainder by the Baratheon-Lannister regime, given that following the Battle of the Blackwater, those men who had fought for Stannis but "begged forgiveness for their treasons and promised to serve loyally henceforth" were "welcomed ... back into the king's peace and restored ... to all their lands and rights". Therefore, we cannot tell whether Asha's allusion to "Massey's own ancestral holdings" being "lost to him" refers to this apparent general attainder or a prior loss of lands (after Robert's Rebellion or at another time).
Nor do I think we can really say whether Justin's knightly position and title reflect his feudal ranking or merely his chivalric training. As an aristocratically born squire to a king, and given his large size perhaps at least a competent fighter, Justin may have expected that he would be knighted by the king in due course following a period of squiring, and since we don't know who knighted Justin and when, it's entirely possible that Robert (or someone else) knighted Justin irrespective of whatever place in the Massey succession Justin held, simply because Justin had finished his period of squiring. No one in universe, certainly, suggests that the Masseys suffered the same fate as the Conningtons, to lose much of their lands and have the head of the House be reduced from a lord to a landed knight (and it would be quite strange to me if that were the case, given that the Masseys were nowhere near as personally identifiable with the Targaryen cause during Robert's Rebellion as the Conningtons were). Of course, even if Justin had already lost the right to his ancestral Massey holdings, such a lack of lordly inheritance would not prevent Justin from being knighted: Dontos Hollard, after all, was knighted after being spared as a child by the chivalric intervention of Barristan Selmy, while Jaime promises the officially attainted Lord Edmure that "[i]f [Roslin's] child is a boy, he will serve House Lannister as a page and a squire, and when he earns his knighthood we'll bestow some lands upon him". The most we can say is that at some point, someone who had themselves been knighted (who was likely but not necessarily the king) decided that Justin should be knighted.
(Even less, I think can be said about Wallace Massey, given that we know literally nothing other than that he is Denys Mallister's squire.)

okay I know Westerosi marriage customs are fucked seven ways but
Tumblr media
surely this HAS to be Stannis's personal misogyny, and not general Westerosi opinion, right? Asha's "marriage" just can't be accepted as real by the rest of society, right?
like i get that mutual consent is not a requirement, that's been established in the books by precedent. But a marriage that lacks consent AND the bride never said the vows AND was never consummated AND lacks religious legitimation (both among the ironborn and the rest of Westeros) AND lacks secular legitimation (again, who outside of the Iron Islands is gonna think Euron is a legitimate ruler? surely not Stannis) wouldn't be accepted by the rest of the noble houses, right? otherwise just, what are we doing. a clown car version of a social institution.

Something occurred to me this morning—
Stannis sends Justin Massey off to Braavos to hire a sellsword company, saying that the Golden Company would be best.
Considering how snowed in they are… is there any chance that the North doesn't get word of Aegon's invasion for a while? Any chance that the timing works out so that Stannis hears word that the Golden Company has landed in the Stormlands, and holds Storm's End, and then that leads Stannis to falsely believe that is the work ofJustin Massey?
Because in that scenario I could see Stannis making misguided strategic decisions based on believing that he has a massive advantage that he does not truly have...

Scandal Westeros | Justin Massey
"Get this," Jon says. "She wants to say she cheated. They matched her with that tech twat, Justin Massey. Running with the 'she fell for a free spirit after feeling stifled by the demands of politics' story."
From the tidbits about Massey in the media, he's as much of an attention whore as Greyjoy. A tech founder who styles himself like a rock star, waist-length hair and all. He bought Joffrey and Sansa's old penthouse after months of no one wanting to touch it, and made sure the gossip rags knew he overpaid. A man like that would love nothing more than to get into a cock-measuring contest with a sitting councilman.

Would Davos Seaworth and Justin Massey have had much of a relationship and what do you think their interactions at Stannis’ court on Dragonstone would have looked like? Will the two ever interact on page, in your opinion?
Well, Justin Massey was Robert’s squire whose ancestral lands were under his personal demesne (the Crownlands), whereas Davos Seaworth is Stannis’ adviser with a keep on Cape Wrath (the Stormlands), and the enmity between Stannis and Robert was clear, so I don’t know if they’d be close during that time. Davos is also insecure about his common-born status, and there’s only a few of Stannis’ men he singles out as being kinder than most to him (Pylos, Cressen, Andrew Estermont, Rolland Storm, Gerald Gower, Axell Florent until GRRM forgot); and Justin, young, handsome, highborn (until he was deposed of ancestral lands), likes to joke around, looking to marry some heiress, a convert of Rhllor who believes Melisandre brings Stannis luck, is probably not going to give Davos much more than a second glance except in emergency. For instance, he advised the retreat to Dragonstone after the battle seemed lost, and is voicing frustration over a siege in the snow and admits he’d rather live (though his predictions about the Dreadfort and Deepwood were wrong); so maybe it’s possible they’d band together to convince Stannis to exercise some caution and not go full Rhllor burning useful men alive. However, since Davos is sailing to Skagos and collect Osha and Rickon, and Justin is sailing to Braavos to escort Tycho Nestoris, it doesn’t seem likely they’d cross paths anytime soon. It’s possible by the time Justin returns North, Stannis’ cause will be lost, and then what’s going to happen to his ambitions to gain a lordship?

Hello, hope you’re having a nice day. Respectfully just letting you know Justin Massey is from the Crownlands, not the Stormlands
Thank you for the correction!
You are right, as the one and only Justin Massey / Marya Seaworth shipper I should do a better job of getting my facts straight. I vow to improve!

Poor old Justin Massey! It would be fitting if Stannis then sends him out to get help elsewhere and he ends up being killed by the Others. Or maybe a stone falls on him.
I like to imagine in my speculation on TWOW how things might just continue to go sideways for Justin Massey.
Justin’s first order, after leaving Stannis’ camp, will be to “deliver her [i.e. “Lady Arya”, really Jeyne Poole] to Lord Commander Snow on [Justin’s] way to Eastwatch”. Easy enough, Justin probably thinks (especially since he himself has no reason to doubt Jeyne’s purported identity - more on that in a moment), he’ll get a warm reception from the pro-Stannis Lord Commander Snow for having his “sister” returned … but uh oh, I think Justin will hear on the way there that Jon has been murdered by his black brothers and Castle Black is in chaos between the Night’s Watch, free folk, and queen’s men. No use bringing Jeyne-as-Arya to her “brother” if that person is not just dead but the victim of an assassination/de facto coup; the same Night’s Watch members who so recently violently killed Jon probably wouldn’t look too kindly on his “sister” showing up at their doorstep. Oh well, Justin might think, better take Jeyne-as-Arya with me instead and figure out what to do from there.
So Justin might then skip to his second order from Stannis: to collect Stannis’ loan from the Iron Bank in Braavos and hire at least 20,000 sellswords with the money. Easy enough, Justin might think; even if he himself failed to convince Stannis to grant him a title or lands to impress the free companies, he is still prepared to “[g]o to them with both fists full of golden dragons”. But, uh oh - I think Justin is going to fulfill Stannis’ prediction that “[i]n Braavos you may hear that I am dead. It may even be true”. Negotiating payment by the Iron Bank on Stannis’ loan and debt agreement might be a good deal harder with the main signatory dead (and his legal heir being an underage girl thousands of miles away with no knowledge of the agreement). Even if he could convince the Iron Bank that would-be Queen Shireen will make good on her father’s word to pay back the Iron Throne’s debts, would he be able to convince sellsword companies to risk their necks for the sake of an 11-year-old girl, heir to a dead pretender, in faraway Westeros?
But then, perhaps, good news for Justin! (Or what he might believe is good news, at least.) I think that as he’s deciding what he’s going do in Braavos, he’ll run into the real Arya Stark (because there is absolutely no way in my mind that Arya, who has had such a strong theme of personal identity throughout her storyline but especially during her time in Braavos, would not have any opinion on seeing Jeyne Poole, a girl who literally grew up with her, be referred to as “Arya Stark”) Well, now maybe Justin decides to cut his losses and try to return to Winterfell with the real Arya. If Stannis is dead (so he thinks) and it’s a losing proposition to make good on his claim to Westeros, he, Justin, might as well take what he can get - and a restored Kingdom of the North, with the rightful (again, so he thinks) Stark heiress, is not a bad concession prize for a landless knight with no hope of reclaiming his ancestral territories. (Ir’s incredibly creepy and gross to speculate whether Justin would imagine himself as Arya’s future husband, but given Justin’s previous marital ambitions with both Val (as the “wildling princess”) and Asha (as the would-be heiress to the Iron Islands), the thought might be in his mind.)
But, uh oh … what Justin Massey doesn’t know, and can’t know until he shows up, is that he doesn’t have the last best Stark. No, far from it - Winterfell is going to be the center of a factional dispute over which of the suddenly reemerged Stark heirs has the senior claim to the North. Justin Massey might have the real Arya Stark, but now he has to contend with elder sister Sansa and legitimated elder brother Jon and legitimate younger brother Rickon (and maybe even Bran too). As an underage girl, Arya has at best a hotly disputed claim over her siblings (and that’s without Arya herself I think probably being way more interested in reuniting with her family than in trying to fight with them over who gets their butt on the high seat of Winterfell). Plus, even if he could convince the factions that Arya was the superior choice, Justin might find out that the freaking apocalypse is nigh; rather bad timing to claim a castle when otherworldly eldritch slaver ice monsters are knocking at the door.
Justin Massey: perpetual loser.
