me: goddamn, I reviewed some fiction I wrote merely 4 months ago and it feels like it was written by a completely different person with way more life in them. the past months have been rough. I need to stop waiting around taking it easy, waiting for my energy to come back. I should just do the hard things I'm putting off
brain: like rereading and reviewing Nick Lane's dense book on the origin of unicellular life in hydrothermal vents
me: noooo anything but that

people actually went on about how game of thrones made it socially acceptable to be a fantasy nerd, as though the lord of the rings movies hadn't been released less than a decade earlier and left far greater cultural ripples and i am just
got may have made the adults feel better about liking fantasy, but lotr got into the kids' heads when they (we) were just young and impressionable enough to be absolutely transported and emotionally rewritten by don't you leave him, samwise gamgee and my brother, my captain, my king and and rohan will answer
lotr was rewriting entire generations' brain chemistry long before asoiaf and so obviously it's not fair to compare any post-lotr fantasy novel to it, and each book series was trying to do different things within their own spheres and so that also is not a fair comparison, but in terms of the cultural impact of the adaptations that came out within a decade of each other, saying that it was game of thrones that made fantasy mainstream is baffling
game of thrones could only run because the lord of the rings movies laid the path, and i will die on this hill
#lotr#lord of the rings#lord of the rings movies#i started this post because ''may it be'' came up on my playlist but now i think i'm going to start my nth rewatch of the trilogy#there is a lot to discuss about it re: comparison to the books but it's like...#for all the changes they made - good and bad and neutral - everyone involved in making the films *loved* the source material#they all *wanted* to do justice to it and believed in it and it shows#i think of some posts i've seen about how frustrating this modern push towards tongue-in-cheek irony over sincerity#so afraid to be corny or cheesy that you have to tack a joke onto every real emotional moment#like no fuck that#give me sam hauling frodo onto his shoulders saying ''i can't carry it for you but i can carry you''#give me aragorn gently kissing boromir's forehead as he dies#give me merry and pippin throwing themselves at the uruk hai to distract them from frodo#give me theoden's grand speeches and gandalf's pained expression when frodo says he'll carry the ring#tbh i think that sincerity is a large part of *why* it has such staying power even now#because it is a story you are meant to get deeply emotionally invested in and not hold yourself a little ironically apart from#it isn't meant to sell merch it's meant to bring you to middle-earth and capture your heart and make you believe that the war can be won#with love and loyalty and hope and fellowship and fidelity and integrity and just... just refusing to give in to despair#it is earnest. it is unafraid to be melodramatic or corny because it believes in the story it's telling.#and so it imprinted onto a whole generation growing up right at the cusp of a barrage of apocalypses#anyway. i have Feelings about these movies and their impact and how that mirrors and enhances the books' own impact

All the talk about Wander Over Yonder in the replies for this post is making me so happy rn :'> 💕
This was not technically inspired by the Wanders (except maybe subconsciously, a bit, I'm sure) but I absolutely love that episode and that show in general so asdfghjkl; yeS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had an idea for a one-off Rise episode plot and just wanted to quickly sketch up some visuals for it.
The plot goes as follows: Donnie attempts to invent a cloning machine and, due to some kind of science-y mishap, ends up cloning himself...a lot. But there's a catch to this - the clones aren't exact copies of Donnie, they each possess just ONE of the various facets of his personality (i.e. brainy, broody, sarcastic, passionate, dramatic, mischievous, etc.) and a small portion of his mystic powers. Don tries his darnedest to keep the whole situation under wraps while he searches for a way to fix it, but some of the more rambunctious Donnies quickly escape and begin stirring up trouble in the Lair, so it doesn't stay a secret for very long. To make matters worse - the real Donnie starts to slowly disappear (something having to do with his existence being divided among the Donnies or blahblahblah fake science explanation). So, while he and the scientist Donnies continue to look for a way to reverse the cloning effect, his brothers and Co. set to work gathering up all the other Donnies so they can put them back where they belong and keep Donnie Prime™ from vanishing.
Hilarity, wholesomeness (and some mild angst) ensues.
(Note: I meant to include April in that second-to-last image, but ran out of room. Just know that she, Splinter, and probably Casey Jr. are all there, as well.)

Experiment Gone Wrong
Dpxdc Prompt #28
Danny never told the Justice League he was a ghost.
He didn't really think he would have had to. His main powers were intangibility, invisibility, and flight—all staples of powers of the dead. Justice League Dark obviously knew, sensing the death magic surrounding him and contacting him any time they needed help with the Zone.
He assumed the rest of the JLA had been under the same impression. Which is why he was so confused when Barry came up to him one day asking him how he'd gotten his powers.
"Experiment." He replied, a silent gone wrong tacked on the end. Danny knew that regular folk weren't quite informed about the social norms of ghosts, so he wasn't too offended by Barry's question. If the man pressed for details, then they'd have a problem.
What he didn't know was that instead of filling in the blank with gone wrong, Barry thought Danny meant gone right.
I mean what teenager with access to a lab wouldn't want superpowers?

living in some dingy apartment building because it is all you can afford on your income unless you want to eat danimals yogurt and saltine crackers for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. the stern landlady lives on the first floor, and some neighbors blast music on weekday nights (even if they didn't, the walls are paper-thin. you know more about the cambrian period than you'd like to, thanks to room 105) but it's a modest roof over your head and while the darkened grout lines in the bathroom are permanent, at least there's hot water.
until there isn't. and the landlady has mysteriously gone on vacation for the next two months.
what used to be a cathartic cleansing has now become your torment. every other day is hair wash day which means you're bent over the cold, porcelain edge of your tub, back screaming in protest and pain shooting up your bruised knees even though you've sacrificed one of your very nice pillows to avoid exactly that.
and showering is torture. the icy cold water feels like a thousand tiny claws scraping over your tender scalp, sinking into your trembling shoulders. you don't wait for your body to acclimate, just hastily scrub yourself as clean as you can and hop out, your chattering teeth and shaky breaths echoing through the tiny bathroom.
it's like this for a week and a half, a whole 10 days of suffering with showers so cold it feels like shards of ice biting into your goosepimpled skin when it stops. warmth bleeds into the stream of frostbitten water. finally, it soothes instead of stings. your coiled, tense muscles gradually slacken with relief, with unadulterated bliss. steam rises, the tips of your fingers and toes tingle as if thawing. gratitude wells in the corner of your eyes.
if you had any money you could afford to give, you would to your savior, but every dollar you own is earmarked for the bare essentials. so, with your thick, warm bathrobe cinched around your waist, you pen down a little heartfelt note to stick to the bulletin board downstairs before heading out for work.
thank you, whoever you are, for fixing the boiler. i could kiss you <3
when morning comes, you use one of the dull, golden tacks that previously held a lost pet flyer (sorry, bilbo the hamster, but it's been a year) and pin your note up.
only to come home and find it gone, a torn corner all that remains. maybe it's karma for your callousness towards someone's pet. (justice for bilbo.) you shrug it off, giddily skipping up the steps to wash off the day's stress with hot water.
but before you even hang your keys on the wall, there's a pounding on your door, hard enough to rattle it in its frame. and the masked man you see through the peephole isn't familiar. against your better judgment, you clear your throat before cracking open the door. "yes?"
the piece of paper he's holding in his dinner plate-sized hands seems incredibly small— and it's your note.
"i fixed the water." oh. "'m 'ere for wha' 'm owed." owed?
"i'm not— um. the kiss. it's just a figure of speech." the thick muscle of his bicep coils as he crosses his arms over his barrel chest. he's a very large man, as broad as your door.
if you slammed it closed on him, he'd probably leave it hanging by its hinges. that's not worth a measly kiss.
"okay. but on the cheek since i never specified where so it's dealer's choice."
he huffs out an amused breath but complies, hooking his thumb under the edge to pull up his balaclava just enough to expose his stubbled cheek. he's got a couple of scars; thin, slightly raised. run along the sharp edge of his jaw and disappear beneath the fabric.
he leans close, enough to hear his steady, slow exhales. he smells of dirt. salt. something smoky, tangy-- like on new years, minutes after the clock strikes 12.
your hands cradle his face as you rise to your tippy-toes, wetting your lips and crane your neck-- but he snaps his head to the side,
and takes the kiss he was owed.
(he takes a screwdriver to the ac unit next. wire cutters to the fuse box. nails to your tires. anything that'll inevitably lead you back to him. you tried paying him with dinner but the only thing he was interested in eating was your cunt.)

Yknow despite my absolute negative amount of interest in Wortox at this rate it's only a matter of time before I somehow start being mentally ill abt him too. If Wormwood and Willow got in my head then everyone else's days are numbered at this point </3
#rat rambles#to be clear; I have nothing against him hes just utterly uninteresting in concept to me#and Im not a huge fan of his kit either especially as a paid dlc character#I feel like hes the only one of the dlc characters who's weaknesses dont also add a new layer of nuance to their gameplay#wurt gets more benifit from veggies wormwood doesnt get damaged by foods and can use fertilizers and wanda has to manage her healing#intervals carefully but has basically infinite healing making fighting both more and less punishing#but when a guy's entire kit surrounds making you do repetitive labor only to punish you for using its rewards anyways it just feels unfun#like its not too bad if you have other players to help and he can do cool stuff with souls but only in very limited and simple copasities#one of my friends main him and I appreciate what he brings to the table but he also often complains abt how obnoxious he is to play#like idk its rly just the food weakness that gets to me because it feels like it takes away more than other aspects of his kit give#specifically it does in a boring and flat feeling way imo its very walter doesnt like clothes feeling 2 me#like the kinda thing where it just feels tacked on without much thought#tbf Im not a huge fan of wormwood's kit either so dont take this as me saying every other dlc character is perfect but yknow#at least wormwood has more than like 2 things he can do#sorry that this jusy turned into kit ranting I just have to long for justice for my dear friend so we can stop having every mod that we try#out to make things easier break our game within a session or two after it worked fine initially#also wendy likes him so I legally have to like him at least a little

Why was the ferris wheel scene so significantly changed form the comic?
I loved the scene in the show because it deepend Toris character which we havent seen in the show so far, but the scene in the comic ia one of my favorite scenes from the whole of heartstopper, so i was a little disapointed when the point of it was compleately different
I've been asked this a lot! I felt that to include that moment in the ferris wheel scene would feel extremely rushed and out-of-nowhere given that there'd been no build up to that realisation for her at all in the show. We can get away with that kind of storytelling in the comics because the comics are so short/condensed in comparison and very Nick and Charlie focused - moments with the other characters have to be brief and to-the-point. But in the show the secondary characters need more complex journeys with proper build up, or they feel flat.
Tori being ace is so important to me that it's essential that I do her journey justice, so I decided to save it for season 4 (if we get a fourth season). In which case, we'd be able to reach that point for her with an understanding of how she has come to that conclusion, and what she's been through to get there. A big part of that, in my opinion, is seeing a little more of what her relationship with Michael is like - another thing we simply didn't have enough room for in season 3. Honestly, I personally felt I would rather risk it and wait for S4 and do it properly, rather than rush/half-ass it by tacking it on to the end of S3.
I also felt that Tori's journey throughout season 3 was primarily focused on her relationship with Charlie. I wanted that scene to exist as a conclusion to that element of the story, and not to distract from that - because Tori and Charlie's sibling relationship is also extremely important to me and important to the story (and origin of the story!).
I think what I would say is: that scene can definitely still exist in a new form at a later point in the story, where it will make more sense, feel more realistic, and have a greater emotional impact. I expect I'll draw from the original comic scene heavily, dialogue-wise, if/when I get there in the show.
Saying all that - I totally understand that people were disappointed and I don't blame/judge anyone for that!

Ok wait i just had a funny idea
Why stop at just a yandere batfamily? Why not all of Gotham?
Like, imagine Bane kidnapping you, calling you his "firefly" or whatever because you're a fleeting light in the darkness or something, and you're more guarded than the actual thing he stole.
And despite that, Poison Ivy manages to nab you, her "little rose", while Bane is busy dealing with Batman. She takes you back to her apartment, where you greet the plants you recognize and introduce yourself to the new ones (There aren't many, you were here 3 months ago).
At some point you take a breath of fresh air through an open window, and Scarecrow grabs you, taking you to his lair, into a room which is also pumped with a special strain of fear gas that makes you cling to him for safety.
And then, shock of all shocks, the one and only, motherfucking Joker snatches you from the lair, leaving behind a dummy for Scarecrow to find. Unlike the others, Joker's obsession is in the fact that everyone else is obsessed with you. He finds it hysterical how one person can have all of Gotham in a spin!
Eventually, the Batfam grabs Reader from the Joker, since he's not actually obsessed so he has them the least guarded, maybe a short conversation with Batman, but even Joker knows he's in water too hot to joke about severe injuries, especially since he doesn't know if Red Hood is nearby.
Batman might not kill, but he cannot guarantee that anyone else wouldn't if he killed their favorite person, and he does not have the influence where he could get away with that.
You get returned to your nice cage room in the manor, where the Batfamily scolds you yet again for another failed escape attempt trip outside getting you shipped around Gotham for weeks!
At this point, you're pretty sure you not only can't leave, but also any attempts at a normal life are pointless. You mostly do this because humans are animals and animals need enrichment, and no, the cycle of games/quality time they're giving you are not a suitable replacement for touching grass and seeing new faces.
Even the brief moments of time between kidnappings, the short moments of normalcy that the other villains, the other heroes and vigilantes give you, are a welcome change of pace.
Bonus points if it's literally everyone in neighboring cities/Justice League, so Superman finds you and you're just like "Well shit" because now you're taken to his house, maybe his parents' farm, and you're kept there until someone catches on that Clark has you.
Also if you tack this onto Spoiled!Reader, this becomes infinitely funnier because In my mind I'm treating that AU as 90% a crack/lighthearted fic, and another thing is I think of them as being ~12 sometimes, so it's the entirety of Gotham fighting over a middle schooler.
If it's an adult Reader, it's more of a "This is fine" as they are carted from villain to villain to vigilante to hero because their family literally has a fan club for them, so their perception of what is "normal" levels of interest is severely skewed.
If you want to go for the Neglected!Reader, then it would be really interesting for them to try and figure out where is a good level of "interested in your hobbies", and doubts whether they're so uncomfortable because they're actually too invested in their day to day life, or if it's because they were neglected for so long that any interest feels overwhelming.
Btw all asks about Spoiled!Reader and this Reader are welcome!

my mic quality isnt gonna do it justice so I'll just link the clip directly, but i havent seen anyone talk about the music+scoring of Zato's ending? yapping abt it under the cut
I want to emphasise the silence-to-music ratio here. Like, every other ending there's this melancholic guitar track for Justice's death monologue, but Justice doesn't talk in Zato's ending, that's the first break in routine that throws the audience off. Underscoring this unease is the fact that for the entire first half of Zato's ending there's nothing but this complete dead silence. It's especially egregious with Zato's drunken reveling; the score isn't on Zato's side, the audience can tell, but the reason why isn't clear until it's too late for him.
Even when the script calls attention to Eddie's presence, it takes until Eddie says his first words for the song to start. Not to mention that the song itself is so much different from everything else on this otherwise guitar+drums focused soundtrack; I think it's synth? (I'm not aquainted with musical instruments) It sounds downright alien, it's so tense and eerie and it just keeps building and ramping up with intensity. The guitar and drums will join later but their inclusion only builds stress on top of what was already there, like something being taken over by a parasite.
Zato realises too late what's happened and he starts begging for his life until Eddie has enough and swallows him whole; then we're just left with Eddie laughing in exactly the same position as Zato had been, taking his host's body and victory away and making it his own. It's haunting in two ways: first is the intended contextless horror of Zato getting subsumed and puppeted by a blob monster for the rest of his days. Second, there's the hindsight of knowing that Eddie is just going to be caught in a loop of chasing the fragments of Zato's past until Zato's flesh rots too far for Eddie to keep going. Eddie doesn't realise it yet, but this moment is his downfall as well; a hollow copy of the one he sought to surpass.

well. here she is. miss Leigh Stasik.
trans woman. stubborn, incorrigible, eccentric. communist; she has leftist in-fighting with herself on the regular. a cannibal; she has no moral qualms about this, and its both a bit of a spiritual thing and a bit of a pragmatic thing. medic (not a doctor. no medical license). she knows for sure she had some kind of significant personality change from being shot in the head, but she doesn't remember what she was like exactly before it happened, it all became this kind of distant memory soup. shes originally from west new cali, but she grew very attached to the mojave. and has a lot of contempt for the ncr. She Will Serve Crack Before She Serves This Country. thank god the army discriminates against transsexuals etc. zero tolerance for the legion, obviously.
she firmly believes she is not nice, or kind, or compassionate, but instead her actions and her general sense of justice stem from her simply doing whats the most logical and objectively beneficial. it may be true to some extent, but she might also have a wee bit of ocd of the "i am a horrible person whos at all times like 2 seconds away from committing atrocities" variety.
shes a SCIENTIST. unofficially. she doesnt have a degree nor a chosen field of study. she makes her own hrt and other mysterious concoctions, including designer chems. which she claims she ingests injects etc not for recreational purposes, but to Enhance Her Powers And Possibilities. she reads old world books about psychology so she can manipulate people better. and makes weird contraptions and doohickeys while high. shes a HACKER of course and hacks terminals and systems for fun and just to see if she can.
her stats are out there due to implants and intense training, originally they were rather average. in-game she wears combat armor mk 2, but i see her having spruced it up like this. her main weapon is the ycs/186, the unique gauss rifle, but before that she used a modded plasma pistol. which she very much enjoyed the silly appearance of. because it was so small and with so much shit tacked on and she could just hold it in one hand like a mutated revolver like Hands up motherfucker bang bang bang lol. her melee weapon of choice is the machete gladius, but she's been training to be able to wield a thermic lance.
in my head the trajectory of her actions and the fate of the mojave that follows is different from what you can do with the game, because leigh could only go for The Secret Leftist Route Which Was Supposed To Be In The Game But We Were Robbed Of It.
boone was the first friend she made after leaving goodsprings and their relationship is particularly notable. they are Comrades, Siblings-In-Arms, Worsties (like besties but fucked up). theyve seen each other at their worst. they annoy each other on purpose. theyve had serious ideological clashes with each other and some ways in which boone perceives the world drive leigh absolutely nuts. they're ride or die for each other. theyre the kind of comfortable around each other where she'll be on the toilet and smoking a cig with the door open and talking to him, while he's naked sitting on the floor removing stitches from his leg. she's done surgery without anesthesia on him. he's projectile vomited blood on her from being poisoned by cazadores. she strongly encourages him to become a traitor to the ncr and to take part in the revolution and the formation of the new independent mojave alliance. somehow, it works on him in the end. shamefully they kinda like snuggling... boone bro come to bed man its nighty night man its beddy bye time.
shes in love with lily bowen. i havent decided yet whether she actually makes a move. but she thinks lily is sooooo dreamy. and shes right. if you dont think the enormous 203 year old blue mutant woman is dreamy thats your problem. outta her way

Bruce’s kids are grounded. All of them.
They’re grounded from patrol. Grounded from cases. Grounded from hanging on the chandelier. Grounded from books. From computers. From the Batcave, and animals, and friends, and breakfast.
“Master Bruce, they have to have breakfast.”
Fine, but they’re grounded from chocolate chips, and bananas. They’re grounded from Young Justice, and The Outlaws, and the Teen Titans. They’re grounded from old aliases and creating new ones. From being a villain. From dying. From everything. Got it?
“Got it,” They all say.
And that is suspicious. They’re planning something. Bruce is on guard now. He goes on a mission with the JLA for two days and comes home to the manor still in tack* and the kids** still in it.
He knows they did something. He just doesn’t know what.
*part of the east wing was demolished. Bruce didn’t notice.
**that’s not Duke. That’s a parallel version of him. They lost him in a universe where everybody walks on stilts and have to go back to find him once the grounding is up.***
***Bruce did not say they couldn’t travel the multiverse
