Having to admit that I'm a monsterfucker when I have been for an unfathomable amount of time is embarassing, but like I have way worse things to be embarrassed about besides wanting to be ravaged by a werewolf thanks

hello! im writing a paper on grief in fantasy and wanted to discuss the odyssey. as the resident odyssey lover do you have any particular moments that you think would be great in an essay?
OUGHH
any time they cry tbh. Grief is So present throughout the odyssey, its soaked in it
though the two that come to mind is when odysseus hears songs of troy and starts weeping, being compared to like a woman whose husband died at war and who was being taken captive. the other one is when he goes to find his father and physically stops and weeps over the state of him, old and weak.
another one is when he meets his mom in the underworld!! when he tries to embrace her thrice but fails because she's a ghost. but theres a ton i am just too sleepy to think of it agjkfshsh

I'm not including a situation where someone might be injured because in that case I'm thinking the bed goes to them by default or they are nominated for it. anyone who wants to be chatty goes to join the living room floor gang.
What are your thoughts and headcanons? Do you have thoughts on how the boys tend to approach assigning beds in inns? Who do the chain choose to sleep near when camping and why? What are their dynamics like when settling down for the night and getting ready for the day?
In "Mirror Vs Open Closet Door: Fight!" by Gintrinsic (here) Four refers to the chain's decision on how to split up between inn rooms as the "Link-per-room ratio" which I find very funny. He, Sky, and Time also talk about their thought process behind why they do or don't want to sleep in a room with some of the others which I find fun and interesting.
So! If you have thoughts and want to share them! *gestures to the post!*
#linked universe#linkeduniverse#alrighty! now for my answers-#for the ranch question I think it varies which is why I'm asking in a poll. What do you think happens most often though?#each answer is a fun scenario so it's difficult to choose#but I think they'd try to act politely around Malon and Time for the first couple visits with straws or rock paper scissors#or showing generosity by offering the bed to someone else. (I bet Malon saying they're charming is quite the incentive#for more possible compliments. The chain as a whole would want to prove her right xD )#Once they're more comfortable in the house though I can totally see Wind and Legend making a mad dash for it while Wars yells after them xD#Wind probably ends up sharing with Four a lot since they're the littles#or Wind snuggles in with Wars Legend Wild etc#Wild and Twi/Wolfie have claimed the spot on the floor by the fireplace.#For inn rooms / castle rooms / camping - I tend to group them by how they're grouped a lot already#but a lil mixed up#Time - Sky - Wars are the good rest trio. they want a good night's rest please let them get their beauty sleep. often joined by Four#Wars goes between this group and wherever Legend is depending on how chatty he is that night.#Twi - Wild - Hyrule are snuggle/proximity buddies#Legend is attached to Hyrule's hip or sets up near Warriors to gossip and gripe. I can also see him setting up near Wild#in the eye of the storm as it were or just an interesting place to be. Wild and Hyrule can get to chatting about everything and anything#so if Legend wants background noise (Hyrule and Wild podcast omg)-#or a conversation he can be half a part of and jump in and out of while getting ready for the night or in the mornings-#this is a good place to be. add Wind and things get a bit more chaotic.#Wind gravitates to Wars and Legend too when curious and chatty. He gravitates towards Time when he wants something calmer.#Four tends to be near Sky or Twi or to Legend's group for the same reasons#I can see Four and Twi having a little book club going during downtimes where they talk about what they're reading. Sky likes to listen. <3#Wind thinks they're nerds but so is he and he can't resist a good story so he orbits and sometimes settles in and peppers questions.#it's funny that Time Sky and Wars want to sleep the most but Legend follows Wars to chat (and ends up bringing people with him xD )#there could be some conflict there oooo#Twi is by Time#it's almost a circle but with clusters of sleeping bags near on top of each other and filling the gaps

Kinda surprised no one's written a fic (to my knowledge at least) where wild joins the chain and, with immense joy and some tears, mistakes wolfie for his wolfie. The whole chain (apart from time, who is bewildered but amused) fully thinks wolfie is simply wilds quest companion. That's not a weird helpful wolf, it's not a wandering spiritual beast, it's got nothing to do with twilight. It's wilds pet. Those who lost their own companions are a bit jealous.
Twilight has absolutely no idea how or why or what to do about it, but wolfie is apparently excellent for wilds mental and physical health, and he's so genuinely happy to see him each time he feels awful at the thought of depriving him and making wild feel abandoned.
The whole team is noticing the fact that twilight always vanishes when wolfie appears, but they're drawing the wrong conclusions (or are they? Twilight is hardly the only one to transform, and he is wearing a wolf pelt of all things). Wild wants to introduce twilight to wolfie.
And then, on a trip to wilds hyrule, suddenly there's two wolfies.

I am sorry, but could the line "Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves" from Poseidon's song be a direct comeback to "What good would killing do/When mercy is a skill more of this world could learn to use?" from Remember Them?
I mean! It comes up repeatedly yeah! Mercy vs ruthlessness is a repeated thing that comes up, even from the first song with the lines
The blood on your hands is something you won't lose
All you can choose is whose
From the start, he's already a killer. I mean, being in a war and all, he kinda has to be. But then it shifts gears because this time he isn't tasked to kill a soldier, but an infant. And he doesn't want to, of course, there's a whole song about it, but that's the first time that dilemma comes up in the musical I think. If he were to spare the child, it would grow up to kill him and his family. If he were to kill it, then he would be able to keep them safe. By choosing to do what would be morally abhorrent, he'd be able to keep the people he loves safe. He chose mercy onto himself.
It's then kinda touched upon in full speed ahead
We should try to find a way no one ends up dead
Which is self explanatory in itself. But excessive violence isn't really a proper way to go about things, so this one is more of a reach.
Then there's the entirety of Open Arms. Just. The whole entirety of. Greet the world with open arms. It's undeniably on the side of mercy.
Warrior of the mind has this line:
Have you forgotten to turn off your heart, this is not you
Calculation instead of desperation, logic instead of heart. It comes after Open Arms, goes against open arms, so it would most likely fall on the side of ruthlessness. It's this gradual build up of him realizing he doesn't want to kill anymore. Doesn't want to resort to blood every time
Then we come to Remember Them
What good would killing do when mercy is a skill more of this world could learn to use
That's technically when he first voices that he wants to choose mercy. Which is also really interesting because they just killed off the physical embodiment of his moral compass, and then in the next saga introduced the philosophy of choosing ruthlessness over mercy. That's cool. It's most definitely a response, in the same way Athena's "your just a man" directly answers Odysseus' "I'm neither man nor mythical"

Wolves and Rabbits - Part One
Legend meets Wolfie for the first time(s). It doesn’t go well.
[this was getting too long for one post so i’ve decided to split it into multiple parts]
The atmosphere around the fire was warm and friendly. Though the Chain, as they’d jokingly dubbed themselves, hadn’t been traveling together long, conversation flowed freely and laughter brightened the air.
Legend and Warriors, as they were now called, sat together on one side of the fire, engaged in one of their now-familiar verbal spars. It hadn’t taken long when they met for the two of them to start bickering, picking each other apart with their words and sharp tongues. Now, though, it was (mostly) in good fun; a way for them to destress and rid themselves of excess energy without coming to physical blows.
“No, no, you really thought-” Legend cut himself off to stifle the laughter bubbling out of his throat. “There’s no way you actually-”
“Okay, when you put it like that, I suppose I can see where I may- may! have gone wrong,” Warriors admitted. He shot the Veteran a glare, but everyone could tell there was no heat to it.
He was about to say more when there was a cry of “Wolfie!” He turned to watch as Wild bounded over to greet the wolf as he padded into camp. Wolfie yipped in greeting, nuzzling Wild before moving to say hello to the rest of the heroes around the fire. Legend made no move to join them.
“Oh! That’s right, you haven’t met Wolfie, yet, have you? No need to worry, he’s a big sof-” Wars turned to see Legend frozen, eyes wide and trained directly on Wolfie. “...Vet?”
There was no answer.
The unexpected lack of response had the others looking over, confused expressions quickly morphing to worry at the continuing silence. Wolfie made a questioning noise, gingerly stepping closer to see what was the matter.
Legend was rigid, face rapidly paling as he tracked Wolfie’s every move. Warriors noticed with a start the other didn’t even seem to be breathing. His hands were clenched so hard on the log his knuckles were white. This close, Wars could hear his pulse, hammering rabbit-quick. Legend still didn’t move.
Wolfie whined, taking another hesitant step forward. Legend’s hands twitched, an aborted attempt at fight-or-flight, but otherwise there was no outward reaction. Wolfie stopped, his ears going flat. He lowered himself to the ground, making himself smaller, less threatening. It didn’t seem to help.
“Alright, that’s enough,” Time’s voice cut through the uneasy silence, quiet though it was. “Wolfie, I think it’s best if you leave for now.” The wolf whined again but slowly began to back away. Legend watched as he disappeared into the bushes but still didn’t relax.
It wasn’t until several long minutes passed that he finally took a shuddering breath, shoulders dropping minutely as he unclenched his hands from their tight fists. Warriors noted the bright crescent marks from where his nails had bitten into them.
“...Legend? Are you- are you okay?” came the Traveler’s hesitant voice.
Their resident Veteran seemed to snap back to himself, shoulders going taut again. He pushed himself to his feet, turning sharply away from the fire - and away from everyone’s staring eyes - and started towards where they’d left their packs.
“Legend-”
“It’s fine. I’m fine. There’s nothing to worry about,” He snapped, voice tight.
They didn’t bring it up again after that.
