there was a fire in the building that houses my studio on new year's eve. i'll probably elaborate on that more at some point idk but tldr

it wasn't a big fire, nobody lost any stuff, nobody was hurt. the electrical mains gave up the ghost (likely due to an ongoing leak the landlord wouldn't fix)

but because the landlords have already wanted us out for ages so they can "redevelop" (read: tear down a slightly run-down building from around 1900) the place into Yet More Soulless Shiny Flats Nobody Around Here Can Afford they decided the damage is uneconomical to repair, refused our offer to contribute to repair costs, and are kicking us all out

because there was an "accident" causing "irreparable damage" they're exempt from the usual 3-month waiting period and everyone has to vacate by Feb 1

this is a community space occupied by artists and musicians so now there are a couple dozen broke-ass bitches who have to relocate short notice. the landlord, spectrum properties, is refusing to extend the time any further

so! there will shortly be some form of gofundme type situation to raise money for the costs of doing that (like storage units if we can't find another studio space), and also to tide over any artists who relied on that space for income since they've not had anywhere to work for a couple of weeks and probably won't for several more

for no reason in particular, i am once again saying that even if the work you're doing is with a content creator you love and on a project you're all passionate about and you trust everyone involved and they would never, say, ghost everyone involved for months leaving you in legal limbo in regards to the ip you've spent the past three years of your life on while everyone is clamoring for a statement or any guidance at all from you...

Hullo! I’ve been watching a bunch of your Timelapses and I was wondering how do you always come up with the colours for your pieces? They’re always so cohesive and pleasing to look at (I almost exclusively work in greyscale so if I’m using colour it’s always a lucky guess and it never looks quite right)

Hey there!

I have to be honest that most of the time I don't actually know what I'm doing and that I have no idea how most of my pieces are gonna turn out. My work process is usually based on "Fuck around and find out", haha. I'm happy to know that it apparently doesn't come across that way, though.

A lot of it comes very naturally to me simply because I've been drawing non-stop for so long, but I can give you some small tips that really help me:

1. Have as many references as possible!

Here's what my reference sheet looked like for the Jayvik piece:

It helped me a lot to understand the overall color scheme I wanted to convey. Lots of very cold tones, pinks and very light blues and greens. These colours sorround Jayce and Viktor throughout all of season 2 and I wanted to keep them, especially since in my piece they are lying in the glowing hexcore.

Don't shy away from using references, get as many as you possibly can! Look at other poeple's art too and try to understand how they work with colours.

2. Work with complementary colours!

Since I paint a lot of romantic illustrations I want them to look pleasing and comforting, which I can accomplish by using complementary colours! You see this a lot with couples that are blue and red coded, for example. And I wanted to do the same thing in the Jayvik piece! For that I used the highlights in their hair!

Viktor's highlights are a soft pink hue.

While Jayce's are a soft blue hue.

The colour wheel works perfect for figuring out if two colors compliment each other because they are literally right across from one another!

3. It doesn't have to be true to life.

Pretty self-explanatory, but I thought I'd add it in here anyways. It's important to understand how colour and light works, but you don't always have to follow the rules. Does the rim light look cool but it makes zero sense? Who cares! Keep the cool rim light! Just have fun and fuck around.

4. A little trick to make your life easier!

I'm not excatly the best at colour theory, I still struggle with it quite a bit, but here's a little trick I like to use from time to time:

If you want all your colours to look coherent, take one specific color as your flat colour. Choose a hue that you would like your piece to have. Like this:

Now you choose whatever colours your characters have and paint them in. For example, here are the skin colours I chose for Jayce and Viktor:

Looks off, right? These colours don't fit the overall piece at all. So what do we do?

Turn down the opacity! It's that easy, wahoo!

I went from 100 Opacity to 72 for this specific illustration. And look at that!

It's so much nicer already! Now you know what colours to use as your actual flats! Just repeat this with every other part of your illustration and you'll have a great starting point. :)

I really hope this was helpful! I'm not an actual teacher and I don't have a proper illustration degree, so some things might not be completely accurate, but I thought I'd try my hand at this anyways!

There's this way of doing female-ness in Christianity that I call "pastel flower journal Christianity." I've got nothing against pastel flower journals per se, but for some reason people believe it's the end all and be all of female spirituality, and I think it's a real disservice towards young Christian women.

One of these days I'd like to start a prayer-and-reading group or something for young women, but there would be no floral themes or over-focus on how "God thinks you're beautiful even if the world doesn't" (a true statement, but it's wayyyyy too often the focus in women's spiritual reading). Instead we would be reading:

Seneca's Letters from a Stoic

Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning

Sheed's A Map of Life

Portions of Pieper's book on leisure

Kreeft's Three Philosophies of Life

Guardini's The Lord (or something similar)

Therese's Story of a Soul

and some select portions of the Nicomachean Ethics.

(Also they're all getting the porn talk. I don't know why we give the porn talk to young men but not young women. There's this idea that women don't use porn and they only need the talk about "guarding their heart." Bullshit. There's porn on the YA shelves of Barnes and Nobles and before that there were bodice rippers. Young women need the porn talk too.)

Every young woman needs to be getting a basic grounding in virtue ethics, logic, natural law, scholastic philosophy and Biblical hermeneutics if they're going to get by in today's spiritual landscape. Enough faffery and emotionalism in young women's spiritual education! Give them real food to chew on, not pasty sentimentalism!

The first week Echo is around Crosshair doesn't even speak to him. He looks vaguely displeased, nods or shakes his head as answers to everything, grunts in his direction when he wants his attention for something. Mutters quiet 'reg's to refer to Echo. Echo is half convinced Crosshair hates him, regrets having him join Clone Force 99.

Until Echo mentions he likes strawberries. He didn't even say strawberries were his favorite fruit. Just that they had strawberries and when asked if he wanted some he said 'Sure, I like strawberries.'

The next day there are two cartons of strawberries in his locker on the Marauder.

He has no idea where they came from but he's not complaining about free fruit so he washes them and cuts them up and shares them with the rest of the batch. And every so often another carton of strawberries will show up in his locker. He has no clue who this mystery strawberry gift giver is, just that they seem to always know when he's out of strawberries. He knows its one of the batch but they all swear up and down it isn't them so he lives with these gifted berries until one night he catches Crosshair shoving another carton of strawberries into his locker.

The next day Echo washes the berries, cuts them up, puts some sugar on them (the way Cross prefers to eat them), and sits down next to Crosshair to silently share the strawberries between them. After a bit of silence he says "ya know, I like raspberries, too. If you ever can't find strawberries." Crosshair side eyes him but just hums in acknowledgment, continuing to share the little bowl of fruit between them until they've both had their fill.

The next time he opens his locker there's a fresh carton of raspberries shoved inside.
