I am sorry that some players did not get the narrative satisfaction or emotional resolve they were looking for. I know many players were unhappy with how "their" Lavellan was portrayed and that the game didn't give much options for angry Lavellan's to be represented. This anger unfortunately led many to criticize or bash a Lavellan portrayed as forgiving and compassionate. For how could those possibly be strengths? Fictional women just can't catch a break hey? They can't be vengeful or merciful without someone hating it.

You are disappointed in the narrative framing of not allowing fictional women to be vengeful or angry in this story, asking for those very worthy traits to be recognized. Yet, in the same post assigning traits of compassion or forgiveness as 'sad' and 'passive'. I propose they are in themselves equally powerful acts of strength. Just a different flavour. It does suck there weren't other flavours to choose from in Veilguard. Me and some of my Inquisitor loving friends wonder if there would have been less vitriol to this version if there had been.

It's clear I experienced something very different in Veilguard. I saw an Inquisitor who has lived with pain and made a choice - not to be consumed by it. Who has spent years walking forward, not wallowing in heartbreak or in a stasis of waiting. The same could be said for any race or background of Inquisitor who arrives at the end preferring to seek understanding over revenge. That’s not a lack of agency, it's just a different kind.

And it seems we interpret Solas - his psyche, journey and his arc - very differently. The Lavellan I saw in Veilguard, especially in the atonement ending, tracked for me. This was someone who, back in Trespasser, vowed to save him from himself. This choice in the story told me that the Inquisitor could see beyond the threat Solas poses. That they saw the war within: the guilt, the pride, the sorrow. I saw a story of an ancient being who was both the architect of a terrible plan and its prisoner.

But to collapse a thousand different versions of a romanced Lavellan into one and satisfy everyone? Impossible. Is what we got perfect? No.

For many, the version of Lavellan for this narrative was the right interpretation for them. She was for me.

That said, I’m truly sorry the game fell short for you. I can see how frustrating it must be to not have your Lavellan represented in a way that felt true to you and how you wished to play out the story. I may have shared a different experience, but that doesn’t make yours any less valid.

Shifting Awareness - Lover to Dread Wolf

The Trespasser slide using the name of “Dread Wolf” instead of Solas is a shift of awareness - Inquisitor Lavellan is no longer in the dark about who Solas is.

Throughout Trespasser, the Inquisitor moves through the Crossroads, uncovering hidden truths. If the player discovers all key pieces of information and pays attention, the Inquisitor is able to confront Solas using the title “Dread Wolf.” This narrative structure prepares the player to see Solas as Fen’Harel, with all the implications that name carries.  Where Veilguard drives home the “perception is reality” themes, it started here with Trespasser. How do you see Solas now that you have learned the truth of Fen’Harel?  

And so the use of “Dread Wolf” in the final slide of a romanced Solas/Lavellan confirms this recontextualization. Lavellan understands that the man she loved – Solas - is inseparable from the legend that now defines him. “Solas” is associated with intimacy, shared ideals, affection. But the journey of Trespasser, and the revelations it holds, collapse that perception. It is no longer possible for her to see him only as Solas.  

Her eyes are wide open and have been since Trespasser.

From this point on, her search is not for the man he was with her, but for a way to reach the figure he feels he needs to be. In the post credit scene, the Inquisitor along with others start laying out the plans that lead us to Veilguard.  This is a Lavellan acting in full awareness. This Lavellan who loves Solas does not cling to illusions. She may still love him, but her pursuit is one of intervention, not denial.  

The slide also makes it clear that while it is her lover visiting her in her dreams, she knows it is the Dread Wolf’s heart she needs to change - she has already changed Solas’ heart, he's visiting her in her dreams after all, unable to let his vhenan go fully. What remains is the greater task: to change the Dread Wolf’s.  

Crucially, the language of the slide names him not only as the Dread Wolf, but as her lover. The juxtaposition of these two titles is symbolic. “Lover” evokes the personal, the human, the lived relationship. “Dread Wolf” evokes the mythic, the divine, the dangerous. The combination affirms that Lavellan holds both truths at once. She remembers the man and recognizes the god. Her private experience is converging with historical awareness.  

This symbolic duality and confirmation reappear when Lavellan meets Rook in Veilguard.  

How many of his names do you know? God of Lies, Dread Wolf, Fen'Harel. They're titles he earned from enemies, followers, and fractured history. He and I shared another name. Vhenan. 

Lavellan articulates to Rook the full spectrum of who Solas is - a man with many names, shaped by myth, memory, and propaganda. But she also names the personal. The game is confirming what the final slide of Trespasser already implied - Lavellan holds all these truths at once – her lover and the Dread Wolf. She does not need to rediscover who Solas is. She already knows. In fact, if anything, her clarity has sharpened. 

For this reason, any interpretation suggesting that Lavellan does not understand what she’s facing fails to account for the structure and language of the narrative. The slide is not ambiguous. The shift in naming reflects not only her awareness, but her own transformation. She is no longer a woman mourning a lost lover - she is someone seeking a legend, prepared to intervene. 

And this shift repositions their romance story from personal to mythic. The end of Trespasser sets the stage - a legend in which the hero/heroine pursues a loved figure who has vanished into myth. The dream imagery reinforces this: Solas appearing in the Fade, in her dreams, watching from a distance, fading away when Lavellan reaches for him - because this is how myth behaves - untouchable, elusive. 

And yet, the slide does not end in despair. It ends in action: she searches, dreams, waits. These are verbs of persistence, strategy, and patience - and the game makes this trajectory clear with this intentional language. The quest to “change the Dread Wolf’s heart” becomes the foundation for Veilguard, and for those who chose that path, there is nothing unexpected in how Lavellan is portrayed. She is a consistent extension of what the story has already shown: a woman who sees the myth and the man clearly.

its such a mystery as to how ojima got drunk. its kinda (very) concerning if he was coerced/forced to drink and i feel like that would mess with him a LOT once he sobers up but i digress. if he got drunk on his own accord then i suppose it could make sense. user blake0022 on youtube left a comment on [cage game] where they theorised that he could have taken alcohol to numb stress. that does have some validity but i feel like takeshi isn't the kinda guy to drink (unless he is and just hasn't done it until now). also why was he still wasted after THREE HOURS??? AND AFTER SLEEPING AS WELL?? 2 shots of vodka ass phenomenon 🙏😭🙏(2x13 more like...)

earlier i mentioned how i felt like takeshi being forced to drink would mess with him a lot. the reason why i think this is because the reality of something being done to him without his knowledge would take him back to his trauma of not being able to control how he was treated at the hands of his uncle. (<- although, i could be overanalysing here and could also be proven wrong come friday.) back when i was watching [bruise], i remember him describing his headspace as 'somewhere where he could control things', and that statement is part of why i believe he'd be disturbed once he sobers up.

this leads me into my next point. in [cage game] hiroaki tells ojima to get off of him multiple times, implying that ojima was being very touchy with him; of course, he was absolutely PLASTERED at the time but it is still kinda weird (takeshi is still my goat though...). but this really makes me think about how he'd react upon sobering up and finding this out. i personally believe he'd be mortified--this also ties into my earlier point about doing things without knowledge or control over what is happening. i also think him being overly touchy towards hiroaki would contribute to him being distraught if we take his trauma into consideration. there is a slim chance this may also trigger his ptsd but i'm not familiar with the (c)ptsd experience and don't know anyone who do have it, so i'd like to be corrected if i got anything wrong here. i would like to inquire your opinion on this topic.

anyways i like ojima. hes very cool and interesting. on a different note, i believe he'd be more popular in the fandom if he were as whimsical externally as he is internally. i do feel like he's gaining more attention after the Drunkeshi Incident, but he's still fairly underrated compared to characters like hiroaki and kamimura. although he isn't as unpopular compared to isono and sasaki (i love you sasaki hitomi)

while we're at it i'd like to mention sasaki for a bit. i don't think about her as much as i do ojima but i'd say shes like my second favourite tetro character. i think shes just really tragic cause she was healing from her trauma and she was living a good life with a good family and good friends and then she just has it all ripped away after being put in a killing game and deprived of sleep then she snapped and killed someone and executed and and,,,,also shes NOT EVIL 😭😭 im ashamed to say that i did not like sasaki a bit after [right hand] when hiroaki said that she didnt care about yanagi at all. but honestly i feel like shes justified in a situation such as that. i probably wouldn't want to get my hand slashed either (i think it was the hand she passed onto yanagi i cant remember) and she was a very good leader as well--while i don't really like extremely assertive people (if i can describe her that way), the situation definitely called for a leader and she fit that role very well. also i enjoyed [follow up] a lot because it showed a kinder, softer side of her that we hadn't seen up to that point. i think ojima was justified in feeling angry over being (or feeling) pitied after his secret was leaked in confession game, but i feel like sasaki could have been empathising with him to an extent seeing as they both are survivors of s/a.

i also think about her possible relationships with the other characters had she lived past chapter 1. i remember von saying that her and hiroaki would have bonded had ojima not been placed in the killing game (and canon implies that they would have bonded in some way regardless if ojima was there or not.) i can imagine her and hiroaki talking about true crime and mystery books that they like together lol. also i read her secret log on the tumblr and found out that she writes poetry?!?!! i cant remember if it was ever brought up in canon but she writes poetry and that is Cool. i also think about her relationship with ojima a lot. i wouldn't really ship them (i'm not really a shipping person myself) but they have an interesting dynamic--i find it interesting how they were like the leader (sasaki) and co-leader (ojima) at the start, and after confession game that kinda deteriorated, likely due to the others "pitying" ojima after finding out about his trauma. i feel like if sasaki lived they could have bonded more.

sorry if i talked about sasaki way too much haha. i like your analyses on characters a lot and as a result i like to Ask you things. truthfully, it's a bit hard for me to analyse characters without looking at what other people say and i feel like my analyses can come off as a bit stiff sometimes. i love tetro a lot (been here since the prologue but i forgot about it for a few months then came back and found myself getting really invested in it esp after confession game. it's a part of why august 2024 was such a good month for me. i don't normally make myself known in fandom spaces so yeah) and the characters, particularly ojima and sasaki as you just saw really stick with me. i feel like i've been getting better at media analysis though. anyways i hope you liked reading allat. if you did.

Yeah the whole Ojima getting drunk thing is something that particularly stands out to me compared to the rest of the times the other students have been targeted as it feels so weird. Unlike with Hasegawa getting high you can’t really slip Ojima that much alcohol without him noticing so you would have to force it on him somehow. But that also conflicts with the culprits MOA with setting up traps or poisoning people, so why would they risk like attacking Ojima to get him drunk if he could very easily fight back and see who was doing it? Even while dissociating if he was suddenly being force fed alcohol he would’ve fought back and why risk yourself getting exposed like this just to get Ojima drunk, it really leads nowhere.

So the other option is that Ojima got drunk willingly. This also feels kinda odd but I can see it in a way. Ojima’s been struggling a lot with trying not to daydream as he worries he’s going to hurt someone again while zoned out so he could’ve tried to find another coping mechanism. And with all the shit going on with the killing game and perhaps his accidental love confession to Hiroaki he could’ve just reached a breaking point and took a huge sum of alcohol. It would be quite interesting if Ojima actually did this willingly. But how would he have gotten his hands on that stuff? We know that there’s no booze in the school and since he was that drunk for such a long time I doubt it was just mouthwash, and he said he was going to the art room so he was likely intoxicated there which feels weird. And I’m pretty convinced on that wherever this alcohol came from also came from the same place where the substances Hasegawa got high on might’ve came from, so I’d think it was a defence game reward. But then how would’ve Ojima just taken the alcohol like that if he didn’t even accept the reward? And to me just a bit if he’s worried about hurting someone without knowing it I feel like the idea of getting drunk could feel even more risky but idk.

It’s really something that’s kinda confusing either way you think about it but I do feel when he sobers up we’ll hopefully get an explanation if he remembers being attacked or he took it himself. Coercion could also be another reason but I feel like that’d make it way too obvious for the culprit. Either way Ojima’s gonna have a really bad hangover which would fuck him up for a while like with how everyone’s getting sick.

I really don’t think that this whole incident of getting drunk would relate to his trauma. We really have no reason to believe that being drugged was an aspect in his childhood and it definitely seems that this incident only really is important to whatever the fuck is going on in this chapter with everyone getting attacked somehow and Ojima just so happened to get drunk for whatever reason. I don’t feel like we should be jumping to anything potentially trauma related with Ojima whenever something comes up as we know he can still function as a person even if he has a lot of issues, so things seem to not be related to that in this moment.

You do have a point saying Ojima will probably be very upset after sobering up. He definitely was being quite handsy with Hiroaki in cage game definitely implied by the dialogue and how Tamba and Yanagi were weirded out. And since being drunk lowers someone’s inhibitions, especially sexual inhibitions, it makes sense why Ojima was behaving this way when it’s something he’d absolutely never do. And he wasn’t even really being too bad as he did stop when Hiroaki told him to but he still made him very uncomfortable and Ojima would absolutely be mortified by this. And like I mentioned he was really distressed after he unconsciously attacked Hasegawa by grabbing his arm hard which affected him really badly of him doing something violent without being aware of it. And how scared he was that he’d also attack Hiroaki in a similar manner. So with Ojima getting blind drunk (willingly or unwillingly) he’d absolutely be beating himself up so badly that he made Hiroaki uncomfortable by acting overly sexual towards him without remembering.

And what you mentioned about potential trauma correlations with this that I can kinda see. As from what I know people with cptsd have tendency to feel very negatively towards themselves with feelings of shame and guilt. And in some cases people with trauma tend to worry about repeating the actions of their abusers, and we don’t know too much about this with Ojima but this could play into how upset he was when he was violent towards Hasegawa and potentially believing that he’s a bad person at heart. But again this is something we’d need to see more of to see how this incident specifically would affect him. As it seems pretty clear at this point that Ojima has a crush on Hiroaki and would absolutely not want any harm to come to him especially since he’s worried about hurting him.

Ojima’s a really interesting character and I hate how so many people neglect that side of him because he’s a lot more introverted and quiet compared to the rest of the cast. I could just be liking him a lot as I’m a sucker for characters who are very fucked up psychologically and I can do a ton of research into him but it feel off when people call him boring unironically as he’s anything but that. And he’s kinda been in the lesser half of the characters as Tetro has moving on which really sucks especially since he’s made it so far. I still pray everyday that we should get more info in Ojima’s inner world as that would expand his character so much especially since his daydreaming is such a massive part of his life and that would really let people appreciate him more.

And oh Sasaki Sasaki Sasaki Sasaki, gone too early and overhated but I still love you. I haven’t really talked about Sasaki here much but I really do find her such an interesting character and she really played the role she did as a chapter 1 killer very well but I do wish we could’ve seen more of her personally, but that’s always the drawback of dying early. I think what von said specifically iirc was is Sasaki lived longer she would’ve been friends with Hiroaki which definitely makes sense with how in [Breaching the Gap] Hiroaki was talking to Sasaki in the medbay. Like Hiroaki was being a massive asshole in chapter 1 and being very antagonistic towards Sasaki with their conflicting ideas on leadership but even with all their bickering it definitely seems that Sasaki could respect someone who was very strong willed on how to lead the group. And Hiroaki was definitely right when he said that in the end the group only knew Sasaki for a short amount of time and never really got to know about her as a person where she wasn’t in this incredibly messed up environment and you had to be a bit ruthless. As Hiroaki can also attest to that with his own behaviour but with him he actually survived much longer. I wonder how different things would be if Hiroaki was the one who died early instead of Sasaki, and how peoples opinions on them would be switched.

Even with all the selfish and hypocritical actions Sasaki had done it feels kind bad that I can actually quite understand why she did most of the stuff she did. Especially with Yanagi I can see that she was probably creeped out by his obsessive behaviour towards her, of course from what we know about Yanagi he’s not like that at all, but first impressions from a group that just met each other it’d make sense why she passed that punishment onto Yanagi when he offered it. Yes it was quite selfish but I can very much see her thought process and I can’t exactly hate that for that. Honestly Hiroaki has done more stuff I can’t forgive him for than Sasaki in chapter 1 lmao.

I do think that Sasaki was quite a good leader (before the motive at least) as she was really the only person who got the students moving to actually set up a plan to escape and organise all these group meetings while in the later chapters everyone was a lot more disorganised and only got into group meetings from the idea of Sasaki’s leadership. The situation was incredibly dire so it makes sense she was acting quite assertive. The motive really fucked her over and understandably so. She was already putting enough pressure on herself as it so being tormented by the sleep deprivation motive while still trying to be a leader to the group it makes sense why she became a lot more assertive than she initially was and ended up hurting a lot of people. And from all this pressure, and how from the beginning putting herself into this role would inherently isolate herself from the rest of the group while trying to get them closer, she didn’t really have anyone she was close with and this and all the pressure it was only inevitable she’d snap and kill someone from all the stress and that’s why I think she’s such a good chapter 1 killer.

Sasaki to me definitely feels like she takes safety in control and leadership. The secret logs say that after the incident with her teacher she nearly ended up quitting the student council, but decided to stay and that’s where she got the support from her friends who were there to help her. The incident would’ve probably made her feel helpless and out of control so perhaps she would’ve developed the idea of trying to feel in control to feel safe, especially in such a threatening environment as been trapped in a school with 15 other students all forced to kill each other and be tortured.

Sasaki and Ojima’s dynamic was also something I found quite interesting with them being a subverted typical danganronpa protag duo who ended up splitting apart after the motive and went their separate ways, in death or not. And that’s why [Follow Up] feels really interesting to me like you mentioned as it was the only real time Sasaki properly interacted with Ojima after confession game. I do think Sasaki was genuinely trying to help Ojima with talking to him after knowing that they come from a place of similar trauma. But how since Ojima is a much more isolated person he didn’t like how it felt like Sasaki was pitying him and playing therapist with him when Sasaki bought up the idea of talking to people. As that’s what helped with Sasaki but Ojima doesn’t feel comfortable with that sort of stuff and it being treated as an ends all to recovery and with how Sasaki got somewhat annoyed/confused on why he was so insistent on not doing that when it helped for her. And this interaction was especially interesting considering how Sasaki was treating him before confession game being a lot more snappy at him whenever he zoned out and quite bossy and assertive. So Sasaki’s sudden change in treatment after the game makes sense why Ojima was mad about her pitying him.

Honestly I really love getting these super long analyses I’m always up for reading them and adding onto them and it was quite interesting talking about all the newer events in the series like whatever was happening with Ojima getting drunk then taking a trip back to the beginning talking about Sasaki and it really makes me view how much the series had changed and I couldn’t imagine any of the stuff happening back in chapter 1. I also have been here since the prologue after Yanagi’s interview and kept up with it from the beginning of chapter 1 til now and I always quite liked it from the start but same here as well Confession Game is what got me really hooked in the series and it’s still one of my favourite episodes for that. It’s always fun analysing series like this no matter how you feel you may come across diving deep into the stories and personalities of these characters is some that always makes me appreciate the media even more.

synopsis: what i think the love languages of different one piece characters are (platonic/romantic)

feat: luffy, zoro, usopp, nami, sanji, ace, law

notes: i feel like love languages can be interpreted in both platonic or romantic ways, so i tried to mix it up, but feel free to interpret it how you will!

warnings: slight spoilers for sanji's (full) backstory (?)

luffy

physical touch. LUFFY is big-hearted and compassionate, sending love to everyone he comes across on his journey often without even meaning to. he is very attached to the people he loves - and very much physically.

luffy is always seen hanging off the arms of zoro, wrapping himself around nami, sitting close to robin when she reads, it's his way of making those around him feel loved and protected.

although he isn't massively clingy to the point where he won't allow you to have your own space, expect a degree of clinginess! physical affection is how he expresses his love towards others as well as what brings him comfort. he is a huge hugger: hugging comforts him when he feels sad, but also helps him comfort those he cares about.

zoro

quality time + acts of service. due to ZORO being reserved, he doesn't often say much - these love languages don't often require words for showing and receiving love.

quality time matters a lot to zoro. even if it's just sitting in silence, a small conversation, training together, or walking outside, he enjoys having someone by his side in these moments as the time spent together shows a level of love and commitment in the friendship or relationship.

zoro strongly values loyalty. spending quality time with him shows that you care strongly about being together and genuinely enjoy being next to him even in the smallest of moments. he likes that he doesn't always have to say things to keep it interesting, sometimes just having someone there can feel very loving and he appreciates that.

zoro is big on actions - if he seriously loves you, he's always got your back and would go to the greatest lengths to show it. he would practically level an army for someone he loves and then act like it's nothing at all. he treats people he loves with a priority and wants to ensure that they are safe and protected.

nami

giving/receiving gifts. for NAMI, i feel like this is a given, but this doesn't mean she is ultra-materialistic and that gifts are the only way to her heart!

when nami was young, she never asked for or expected anything, and lived in a life of poverty. to receive gifts from someone she loves would make her whole world, as it's something she was never able to experience when she was younger. she loves receiving gifts especially when they are well thought-out and gifted with love and consideration.

however, she also expresses love through giving gifts. although nami always jokes about the crew owing her money and needing to pay her back at high interest, she seriously would never trade friendship or love for money. if it's for someone she loves, she would gladly use the money instead to help them or spoil them affectionately with gifts.

usopp

words of affirmation. USOPP feels loved by hearing words that make him feel grounded and secure.

usopp is insecure, unsure of his place in the crew as well as insecure of his lack of strength compared to those around him. he has an inferiority complex - hearing words of affirmation remind him that he is good enough and that there is no need to compare himself to others.

usopp is a liar, yes - but he just wants to be believed in. words of affirmation make him feel sure of himself and that there is no need to lie about who he is. he feels the most loved and validated when someone accepts him for his true self underneath the lies, as this allows him to become more confident in his own skin.

however, he also uses words of affirmation to show his support and care of others. usopp is full of stories (although most of them are fictional), and would use his words to cheer you up in your hardest moments.

sanji

words of affirmation + acts of service. SANJI expresses love by giving his all, but never expecting to receive any love in return - words of affirmation and acts of service give him the love he never knew he needed.

sanji's traumatic childhood of being told that he was a failure and that he shouldn't have been born by his biological family caused him to feel unworthy of love. words of affirmation make him feel deserving of love and care after feeling worthless all his life.

sanji is extremely selfless, going to great lengths to protect and give to the people he loves. he goes out of his way to do acts of service for his friends but feels selfish asking for anything in return. acts of service give him the love he has been missing - going out of your way to do things for him, big or small, makes him feel loved as he feels reassured that his existence is not a burden and that it's not selfish to want things for himself, like favours or help.

sanji will always offer words of affirmation and shower you with compliments to remind you of how much he loves and admires you. he is also very emotionally aware and highly sensitive to the needs of others - he expresses this through acts of service (especially with cooking!) to show his care to who he loves, especially if they need it.

ace

physical touch + words of affirmation. ACE resembles luffy in many ways, he is very physical displaying and receiving love. but besides affection, he needs assurance through words that he deserves love.

ace loves physical touch and is very playful when displaying affection. he loves a good hug, kiss, tickle fight, cuddle, hair ruffle, you name it - he finds it fun and feels like it's the easiest way to let someone know he cares about them or loves them. although he is well-mannered and not as rowdy as he was when he was little, he can be when he's affectionate.

however, ace is also similar to sanji in the sense that he is extremely self-sacrificing and would put his life on the line for those he loves. he needs words of affirmation to remind him that his life is valued and that he shouldn't throw it away selflessly because he deserves to live and be loved.

ace also cares deeply about others' happiness, he would definitely use words of affirmation to comfort you during hard times or to build up your confidence and remind you of how much he loves and cares about you.

law

acts of service + quality time. similar to zoro, LAW s very reserved and introverted. he isn't so sure how to show or receive love in the typical way, and has his own ways of doing so, mainly based on actions opposed to words.

law is very practical. he cares a lot about being efficient and doing things right because of his role as the captain (and doctor) of the crew. acts of service such as favours or giving him a helping hand mean a lot to him as someone who is always busy and working. he also expresses his love towards others through acts of service, such as protecting or aiding others when they are injured. he is not the most emotionally expressive, so his love language is deeply rooted in doing opposed to saying.

law also highly values quality time as he feels as though meaningful interactions with a friend/partner make the relationship strong and connected. having deep, meaningful conversations with him or supporting him in difficult moments let him know that he can trust you and that you care about him.

Zutara, romance novels, and the female gaze

Okay so I’ve been thinking about the female gaze a LOT so I checked out a subreddit about romance novels, despite never having read one. I came across this meme (which was initially a Tumblr post and then got posted to Instagram and then to Reddit and I’m now bringing back to Tumblr — Internet telephone, pls never change):

And…what is The Southern Raiders, if not a platonic grovel? Katara’s pain is central to the episode. It’s central to Zuko. Zuko asks Katara what he can do to make up for his betrayal; she demands the impossible. He reads between the lines, cockblocks her brother to get the necessary information, and then waits outside her door overnight (which he also did for Iroh, the one person we know for sure he loves). He basically makes himself a receptacle for her rage, and he holds space for her by coming with her on her revenge quest and carrying their bags and not saying a damn thing about what she should and should not do beyond like…asking her to rest. And obviously the grovel works! She forgives him and then they’re thick as thieves, bantering and fighting and saving each other’s lives, etc.

On a different note, I’ve been told that enemies to lovers is one of the biggest tropes in romance novels, similar to YA lit and fanfic. Here’s something else I found in the romance novel discourse:

And…yeah. In TSR, Katara really does show Zuko her worst self, because she doesn’t feel the need to perform for him. She doesn’t feel the need to perform moral perfection OR cold blooded vengeance. She bloodbends in front of him and he just goes with it. She doesn’t kill Yon Rha and he just goes with it. He doesn’t treat her any differently afterwards. Maybe they talk about it off screen, but I kind of like the idea that they don’t, because Katara doesn’t need to explain anything. And it’s so interesting, because some people in the ATLA fandom have a totally different read on TSR. They think Zuko was encouraging Katara to get revenge (by what, keeping his mouth shut?), and that Aang is the one who acts as her moral compass. I believe that either Bryan or Mike said in the DVD commentary that Aang is the angel on her shoulder the entire time. And this interpretation does make sense if you see it from the male gaze, where Katara as an object of affection is acting in an angry, irrational, threatening way. But if you see it from the female gaze, you recognize that actually it’s probably the most emotionally taxing experience Katara has to go through, and she doesn’t owe it to be nice or perfect to anybody. Katara’s formative trauma literally comes to a head, and she has to make a decision — no, a discovery — about who she is in relation to the tragedy that defines her life and even her identity (as a waterbender, as a parentified child who becomes the mom friend, as a genocide victim), and she’s accompanied by someone who trusts her judgement and validates her feelings.

I’m not saying TSR is explicitly romantically coded, but when it conforms so well to romance novel tropes…is it any wonder that so many people thought “yes this is her man?” And then he takes lightning in the heart for her and reaches for her when he’s literally dying, I will never be normal about that either

You exhale a quiet laugh, looking away. His eyes gleam at the sight of your amusement.

"There it is," he murmurs, triumphant. "You like me."

Your head snaps up. "I do not."

"Oh, but you do," he counters smoothly, tilting his head. "You're trying so hard not to smile. It’s adorable."

You fold your arms, stubbornly attempting composure. "I haven’t agreed to anything."

James raises his hands in mock surrender. "Wouldn’t dream of forcing you, love. Just… strongly encouraging."

You glance at him, then at the path ahead, then back at him. He’s waiting, hopeful, expectant.

And maybe—just maybe—you don’t mind as much as you did last week. It’s a strange feeling, letting someone like James Potter weave himself so effortlessly into your routine. He’s overwhelming, yes, but he’s also… fun. And it’s been a while since you let yourself have fun.

You both settle into a small corner table, the wooden surface slightly worn beneath your fingers. James stretches his arms behind his head, impossibly at ease, like he belongs here, like he belongs anywhere. Then, with a wicked grin that does very little to put you at ease, he leans forward, eyes gleaming.

"All right, now’s the perfect time to tell me your entire life story. All your deepest fears, secrets, insecurities. Lay ‘em on me."

You let out a quiet laugh, stirring your drink. "That’s a lot of pressure for coffee conversation."

James nods, unbothered. "I believe in efficiency."

You shake your head, the smile still playing at your lips. "I think I’ll stick to the basics."

"Fine, fine. I'll lower my expectations." He rests his chin on his hand, watching you with an exaggerated intensity. "Start with your major."

You tell him what you study.

James blinks. Then, as if processing, his mouth falls slightly open. "Wow." His tone isn’t teasing—it’s genuine, almost reverent, like he’s truly impressed.

You frown slightly. "What?"

"You're, like, way smarter than me."

You let out a short, surprised laugh. "I doubt that."

James shakes his head, pointing at you as if making a grand declaration. "No, no, no. See, I do… numbers and spreadsheets and networking. But you? You actually know things. Like, real, impressive things. I'm a fool in comparison."

You feel the warmth creep up your neck, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. "I think you're being dramatic."

"I think you're underestimating how impressed I am right now."

You roll your eyes, but it's hopeless—James is grinning at you like he's already won. And, honestly? You can’t remember a conversation ever flowing this easily, a date—if you can call it that—ever feeling this natural. You don’t really mind at all.

James leans in slightly, studying you, then smirks like he’s thought of something brilliant. "You know, I think this is fate. You feel these sparks too, right? Might as well start brainstorming names for our firstborn."

You nearly choke on your drink. "Excuse me?"

You stare at him for a beat, then, with a completely straight face, say, "Oh, I’ve actually thought about this. Three kids. Probably two boys first, then a girl."

It’s James’ turn to blink. "You’re joking."

You stir the ice around your drink, unbothered. "I don’t joke about the important things."

James runs a hand through his hair, looking utterly delighted. "I knew I was right about you."

You huff, shaking your head, but there’s no hiding the way your smile lingers. James watches you, a little too closely, his expression flickering just for a second—like he’s caught on something more important than just teasing you.

He huffs a laugh, drumming his fingers against the table as you take the last sip of your coffee and stand. You hesitate for just a second, your heart kicking up a beat, knowing full well what you’re about to do. But you’re enjoying this—enjoying him—far too much to stop yourself now.

Without overthinking it, you extend your hand toward him, tilting your head with an easy smile—one that feels just a little too bold but not unwelcome. "Walk me home?" you ask sweetly; the sugar rush nearly stops his heart.

James blinks, caught off guard for the briefest moment, before his entire face lights up. His grin is immediate, wide, and entirely unfiltered—like you’ve just handed him the world on a silver platter. "Oh, absolutely. Best offer I’ve had all day."

His fingers wrap around yours, warm and steady, as he rises to his feet, still beaming like an idiot.

You roll your eyes but don’t pull away as he falls into step beside you, his usual effortless confidence radiating off of him. The walk back is unhurried, the conversation dipping into easy, meaningless things—complaints about professors, half-hearted debates over the best late-night food spots, James’ ongoing theory that the campus squirrels are running some kind of underground empire.

When you finally reach your building, he rocks back on his heels, hands shoved into his pockets, watching you with something unreadable in his expression.

"So," he muses, eyes glinting mischievously, "any chance I can charm you into another date?"

You arch a brow. "Since when was this a date?"

James gasps, pressing a hand over his chest like you’ve just wounded him. "Hey—unfair. You let me buy you coffee, we had riveting conversation, and I made you laugh at least four times."

"Three times," you correct, though you both know it was more.

He tuts, shaking his head. "Should’ve been four. I’ll have to try harder next time."

You scoff, but it’s half-hearted, the corners of your lips twitching upward. "You never actually declared it to be a date."

He leans in slightly, voice dropping into something smoother, something undeniably teasing. "I can declare the next one, if you’d like. Make it official."

Your stomach flutters, traitorous. "I’ll think about it."

James beams like that’s a victory. "I’ll take it."

He steps back, tossing you a wink as he starts down the path. "Don't miss me too much, love."

You linger at the door for just a second too long, watching him go before finally slipping inside—warm in a way that has nothing to do with the coffee.

And maybe, just maybe, already looking forward to the next time he tries to charm you into another one.

hi nicholas! i hope your having a nice day. i have to sound very stupid for a minute, but i could not find a clear answer and im hoping you can help me out. other than being attracted to trans people, what exactly is it that designates someone to be a "chaser" ? i know there ARE distinctions, im just in the dark about the issue and i'd rather not be. it seems like indifference to trans experiences might be part of it, judging by your recent tags? thank you for the help if you answer this 🙏

For me, a "chaser" is someone who is attracted to transness in ways that objectify the trans person, seek to control how they present, and even invalidate their identity.

In my own experience with my BFF-turned-abuser, he framed me as a "safe" (ie, no balls touching) way to engage with his bisexuality. Whenever he called me "best of both worlds", I felt reduced to my vagina. He was obsessed with me staying twinky and non-threatening to his own masculinity, to the point of him discouraging me from starting T. My transness was a dirty little secret to him and he was ashamed whenever I tried to stop being stealth, even among friends. He wanted to control my presentation so that I could satisfy his fetishes. I never felt like a man around him. All this and we never even fucked. (I was not interested in him sexually, thank god.)

Compare to my spouse, who engages with me sexually with an understanding and respect of my boundaries, and who has never sought to control how I present myself to the world. I feel validated and safe, and being told my dick is hot feels like it being attached to *me* only magnifies any of its inherent eroticism.

We all have our preferences and, yeah, trans bodies are hot in some cool and unique ways that can make people go feral. That's cool and can actually be affirming and sexy. But it becomes a problem when you only treat people as their parts, and especially when you treat them as sinful secrets, despite your own enjoyment.

Trans women tend to be far more eloquent on the subject, and I encourage you to find and listen to what they say here, am happy to amplify any comments on the matter.

ARAGORN ♡ acts of service and words of affirmation

This man would do anything for the person he loves and he is the most comfortable when it comes to expressing his feelings in that way. Any type of physical labor and tasks is no issue for him if he can make it easier for you, and you have grown to notice it all the time and appreciate it. His heart doubles in size when you return your affections in that way too, especially since he isn’t exactly used to having things done for him. When the mood is just right, he has no trouble waxing poetic about you and elaborating his feelings, whether in Westron, Sindarin or any other language - you are worth all of them! When he does that, it’s usually in a hushed tone with a special air of intimacy, and it feels so sacred and special.

BOROMIR ♡ physical touch and quality time 

He is one tactile man and a human furnace, like, constantly, and having an arm around you simultaneously means keeping you safe as well. It’s a way for him to show his love, but also to be his protective self. However it’s not just you he’s trying to reassure through gentle touches, he also feels better and happier knowing you’re there and so close. Due to his position, he has many obligations and not always the desired amount of free time, so he’s keen on spending all on it on you. Boromir feels immensely guilty if he must cancel something last minute, or be late for a meeting with you because he was held up somewhere else, but you can count on the fact that he’ll make it up to you tenfold.

FARAMIR ♡ words of affirmation and quality time

As a person who is well-read and a romantic soul, yet someone who hadn’t particularly received many verbal validations, his absolute go-to are words of affirmation! He will shower you with sincere compliments, praise your achievements, reassure you when you’re down… he will even write poetry for you, or just recite something on the spot, it’s honestly the sweetest. Much like his brother, Faramir can be quite busy, but he tries to make sure that none of his duties interfere with the time that he sets aside to spend with his beloved.

You can analyze your favourite writers' techniques. You all know that right?

When you read a book or fic or whatever and are blown away by how amazing the writing is you can just go, "huh, how is the writer doing this? what things are they doing to get this effect?"

And if you can't figure it out you are allowed to google it. Check out YouTube videos, blog posts, and the wealth of posts on Tumblr even. If the writer is famous enough there might even be full-length academic papers on Google Scholar or JSTOR, or even 100+ page published books dissecting their style (Tolkien, for example, if you like his style). If you still can't find the information, ask someone. Ask more experienced writers or writers who write in a similar style. Ask writing advice blogs/channels. Ask the writer/author themselves.

And if you still can't figure it out, you can keep trying things and reading similar stuff, observing until it clicks.

I just say this because, well, reading someone else's writing and feeling like yours is horrible in comparison is pretty much a universal writer experience. I see a lot a posts on Tumblr offering encouragement like, "it is okay if you writing isn't like theirs, you just have different strengths," and "actually your writing is better than you think it is, you've just been staring at it too long." And these are valid.

But also, just because you can't write like that now doesn't mean you can't learn. You don't have to resign yourself to a particular style just because it comes easier to you. It is completely okay to be happy with the style you have, but it is also okay to not be happy with it and wish you could write like your favourite writers instead.

Just... when you get that, "oh my gosh, I will never be as good as them," feeling, maybe try figuring out what it is they are doing that you like so much. Maybe being patient with yourself doesn't mean accepting that this is your best work. Maybe it means accepting that this isn't and that it will take time, knowledge, and practice to get there. But you will, you just have to keep trying.

you’re home alone, just sitting in your room when suddenly everything feels wrong. your heart starts racing, faster and faster, and it’s hard to catch your breath. it pounds so hard in your chest it feels like it’s about to explode. it’s as if there’s this heavy weight pressing down on your chest, making it feel like you’re trapped.

the quiet room around you feels too big and too small all at once, and the thoughts in your mind are spinning, moving too fast, making you feel even more trapped.

you try to calm yourself, try to take a deep breath like you’ve heard people say, but it’s hard. every breath feels shallow, too short, like no air is enough. your hands start to tremble, and soon you’re hugging yourself, hoping it’ll somehow make you feel better, make you feel safe.

only one name comes to you in that whirlwind of fear and noise inside your head—sylus. he’s the only person who can make you feel better, who can make you feel safe when everything seems dark and scary.

sylus had been busy with his work, handling important matters that required his attention. before leaving, he had carefully told you to stay at home and wait for him to return. he didn’t like leaving you alone, he never did, but this task needed his focus, and he wanted you safe. he knew you would be okay if you stayed inside and relaxed until he got back.

“i’ll be back before you know it. just stay safe for me.” was his last words before giving you one last reassuring look after a quick kiss, and left, confident that you would be there when he returned. he had planned everything carefully, making sure you would be comfortable and safe at home while he dealt with his responsibilities.

you reach out for your bag, fumbling for your phone, fingers shaky as you pull up his number. you don’t know if he’s busy; you don’t even care. all you know is that you need him.

when he finally picks up, his voice is calm, strong. “yes, my love?”

there’s a pause on his end, and you wonder if he’ll tell you he’s too busy, that he can’t come. but then you hear him say, “what’s wrong?” his voice is full of concern now, a softer tone you know he only uses only when he’s with you.

“i can’t breathe,” you whisper, your voice breaking. “it’s too much... i need you here.”

you can hear sounds in the background—people talking, maybe even some loud voices, the noise of the city—but you barely notice them. all that matters is the warmth in sylus’s voice as he says, “i’m coming, sweetheart. hold on for me, alright? just breathe. i’ll be there soon.”

the call ends, and you’re left in the silence, but it’s not as scary as before. he’s coming. he’s on his way. you hold onto that thought, clutching it tightly in your mind as if it’s a lifeline. he’s coming for you.

you sit there, alone, every minute feeling like an hour. you try to stay calm, to keep breathing slowly, but it’s so hard. the panic comes in waves, crashing over you again and again, and all you can do is wait, wait for him to come.

finally, you hear the sound of the front door opening, footsteps moving quickly towards you. your heart leaps, and you look up to see sylus standing there, his eyes locked onto you with a fierce, focused look. in that moment, you don’t need words. he crosses the room in just a few steps, pulling you into his arms.

I think after everything that’s happened, Mark would be a very clingy guy. He would hug, hold, and kiss his darling any chance he gets. It can get pretty intense, like, mark holding you so hard bones would break if you try to wiggle free or if he’s feeling extra emotional, be it positive of negative. In the beginning hed be too shy to kiss you, but when he crosses that bridge, he never stops.

Blood: How messy are they willing to get when it comes to their darling?

After everything with his dad and with Angstrom, it would be much easier for Mark to get violent and bloody, especially if he thinks someone is trying to harm you, in his opinion. And to him, anybody trying to rescue you from him is a threat.

Cruelty: How would they treat their darling once abducted? Would they mock them?

I don’t see Mark as someone who would mock his darling. Instead, he would try to pamper you and make you love him back, to make you accept that this is your new life now and its for the best. He would be overly affectionate, to the point where its extremely overbearing. His horrible self-worth also makes you seek a lot of validation. So, all in all, he’s very draining to be around.

Darling: Aside from abduction, would they do anything against their darling’s will?

Mark would hug you, cuddle you and kiss you against your will. Hed go as far as to force you to take care of yourself if you don’t, either by him doing it for you, or watching you like a hawk as you do it. hed never force himself on his darling though, since he still sees himself as a hero.

Exposed: How much of their heart do they bare to their darling? How vulnerable are they when it comes to their darling?

He would expose his heart to you from the very beginning, since he feels so guilty about kidnapping you. Mark would just word-vomit everything he feels and how this is what he needs to do, because he loves you so much and can’t lose you.

Fight: How would they feel if their darling fought back?

Mark would be so sad, but he understands why his darling fights back in the beginning, at least some part of him does. But he would grow frustrated if they kept fighting back for a longer period of time, since he thinks hes doing the right thing. Why cant his darling just SEE that?

Game: Is this a game to them? How much would they enjoy watching their darling try to escape?

Its in no way a game for Mark, this is almost life and death for him. He hates seeing you trying to escape too, since he knows its just proof that you don’t love him back or understand his version of the truth.

Hell: What would be their darling’s worst experience with them?

Probably the fact that there is a high possibility that Mark has killed his darling’s family and loved ones, since if he killed them, there’s no reason for you to leave right? You have no one else, just him, and that’s all you need. Hes also broken many bones, sometimes without meaning too, and sometimes on purpose.

Ideals: What kind of future do they have in mind for/with their darling?

He fantasizes about an almost movie like future, with a happy spouse who loves him back just as much as he loves them, where you’ll greet him at the door and embrace him so happy he’s home. It wouldn’t be too out of this world for Mark to imagine his darling as still living in solitude in what he deemed the safest place.

Jealousy: Do they get jealous? Do they lash out or find a way to cope?

Mark gets so jealous, since his mental state is already very broken. The very thought of his darling loving someone else or wanting to leave him for someone else? Its almost enough to get him spiraling, and it either leads to him having a horrible breakdown, or growing extra violent when he fights crime.

Kisses: How do they act around or with their darling?

Disgustingly doting and clingy. Hes always right behind you or touching you in some way. He absolutely craves your attention and validation, and will have a panic attack if you ignore him. But he also uses a lot of guilt tripping when he isn’t getting his way, or his darling it acting out.

Love letters: How would they go about courting or approaching their darling?

I imagine your relationship was actually pretty normal in the beginning, with you replacing Amber. As normal as a relationship dating a superhero is at least. So mark was kind of clumsy but so sweet and genuine. But then everything with angstrom happened, and he just kinda breaks.

Mask: Are their true colors drastically different from the way they act around everyone else?

Yes. Mark acts cooler and a lot more down to earth around people, suppressing the worse parts of himself. He wants to come across as a hero that everyone can look up too, which also means very few people know of your existence after you disappear.

Mark doesn’t like to hurt his darling physically, but he isn’t above breaking bones. He will sob the entire time though, crying and yelling at you that this is your fault and hes only doing it because you gave him no other choice. But he prefers emotional punishment instead, like isolating you for long periods of time.

He would try to keep as many rights for his darling as possible, not wanting to damage their way of life too much. But you would have no connection to the outside world, and you defiantly wouldn’t be able to leave wherever he keeps you. If you act up too much though, then he would have to start taking privileges away, and chaining you to the bed can also be one of those privileges.

Patience: How patient are they with their darling?

He tries to be patient. Mark knows it’s a big change for you, so of course you’re gonna act out and you’re gonna scream at him and try to fight back. But it also wears on him, making his frayed edges get worse, until he just can’t take it anymore and breaks down, which only adds onto all the guilt he’s been piling on you.

Quit: If their darling dies, leaves, or successfully escapes, would they ever be able to move on?

No way. If his darling dies, then Mark would spiral completely out of control. He would either isolate himself completely, or snap to the point where nolans acts look like a field trip. This depends on if his darling’s death was caused by someone else though. If you leave or escape, you bet your ass Mark is coming for you again. And the GDA would most likely help him, since they know the easiest way to control Mark is to let him keep you.

Regret: Would they ever feel guilty about abducting their darling? Would they ever let their darling go?

Mark would feel incredibly guilty and selfish for kidnapping you, but since he thinks it’s the right thing to do, then he would learn to cope with it. There is a chance you can get him to leave you go though, if you catch him at the right time when he’s most vulnerable, and if he thinks you truly love him in return. But this would be rare, and him coming back for you would be very likely.

Stigma: What brought about this side of them (childhood, curiosity, etc)?

All the loss and chaos he’s experienced since gaining his powers. The stuff Mark has experienced is enough to break the strongest of men, and with his mental state already being so fractured, the thought of losing you would be the last push he needed.

Tears: How do they feel about seeing their darling scream, cry, and/or isolate themselves?

Mark would feel so horrible about seeing his darling cry or scream, since he already feels guilty about kidnapping you. This is also why it would take him months or even longer to tell you he killed your entire family and all your loved ones, since he doesn’t want to see you cry more.

Unique: Would they do anything different from the classic yandere?

Theres so many flavours of yandere, that Marks acts would fit some type of yandere, so probably not. Maybe the fact that there is a small chance he would willingly let his darling go? Or the fact that he resorts to using his own guilt and tears to manipulate you.

Honestly just play along with his delusions, that yes Mark, this was the right idea and the world id dangerous. You love him too, and of course you’ll hold him and tell him he’s doing the right thing and being such a good hero. It wouldn’t be too hard to twist him around your finger, since he’s so starved for you and your attention. Escape would be pretty fucking hard though, since even the GDA wouldn’t help you.

Most of Mark hurting you would be accidental, if hes under a lot of stress or very wound up. But it isn’t above him to hurt you on purpose if he thinks there’s no other choice, like you trying to escape too much, or trying to attack him.

Mark would worship the very ground you walked on and would see you as the center of his universe. This is also why the GDA wouldn’t do anything, since Mark sees you as his everything, and you are human and live on earth, then he wouldn’t turn against humanity. Mark would also bend over backwards to gain his darlings affection, whatever it takes, as long as it isn’t letting you free or anything like that.

Yearn: How long do they pine after their darling before they snap?

If you replaced Amber, then you two would have been dating for a while before he snaps, so he would have pined for around that time.

I don’t think he would do it on purpose, but it would come as a byproduct of his darling being isolated for so long that they just kinda break on their own. Or might be more his darling being slowly shaped into the same kind of stuff that Mark is made out of than outright breaking, since Mark still loves you for who you are. This is where he’s different from his dad.
