hold on tell me more about shadowheart and serena's horses
Oh I’d love to 🥹💕they actually have several! But they each have their “main” horse that they would also take into combat:
Shadsy has a horse named Naïlo in Elvish/Espruar and she has a stark black coat! Which is fitting, because her name translates to “Night breeeze”. Arnell named her 🥰
She’s very smart and not at all skittish: as evidence by her refusal to run when Shads was attacked in the last chapter of ABW. But she does have an attitude and will express it to Shadowheart via huffs and whinnies. Shads braids her hair often, keeps her mane in pretty condition, and is your typical horse girl around her.
Serena has a bigger mount (she wears heavier armor, too) think like…classic Andalusian in terms of size and stature. I imagine him to be dappled maybe?
I REALLY want her to have a war horse in Cormyr that she reunites with/purchases when they move into the cottage and build the stables. (Maybe we retcon in such a way that Althaea rides him to her place for her).
I think they should have a history together, like…he was her assigned war horse and he just absolutely loathed her for months and would buck her off constantly. They should have a sweet story of how they earned each other’s trust over time and how she came to rely on him in wartime!
I feel like he’d have a badass single word name too, but in common…so like… Ruin 😮💨

What animal do you think each of the Riddles are?
Most seem to think rat, fox, etc and I see it.. but the one I see them all being is a Raccoon. Think about it.. mask, hands, the ability to be sneaky and do crimes. But I’d love to see your take! I do see that one bald edward (you posted a photo of kissing his bald head, I don’t know what his universe is called apologies) being a vulture of some kind.
here's some Visions I was granted I think you'll enjoy
Zero Year is definitely giving Raccoon the most to me (aside from the TMNT Riddler that's - literally a raccoon). Mischievous, sneaky, and a little round even. And, since his mask it black, it looks the Most like a raccoon's eyes :]
Arkham Knight Opossum. DON'T call him a rodent, it'll lead to a half-hour rant about how he's a MARSUPIAL, not a rodent. "Actually, there's an 'O' at the beginning-". Gets irate when he has to explain opossum are actually extremely clean and don't carry rabies.
22 Weasel <33 While Ed does give powerful rat aura, it felt mildly evil to turn him into an animal he clearly has some level of fear of/hate for fgkds so I've made him a weasel. Mousy brown, weirdly vertical, and big wet eyes that Look at you.
BTAS kitty. I feel like you could to an entire version of this with different cat breeds, but BTAS gives me classic ginger tabby. A mischievous little tomcat who loves to chase his Batman.
2004 Greyhound. insane 2004 Riddler cameo but I was gifted this from a seraphim. He has real long features n just an overall pitiful demeanor. Plus hit little choker looks like the thick collars they have to special make for greyhounds because of their dumb bicycle heads
Sale Riddler Mouse. I rlly feel like this just makes sense, he's such an unserious little guy. Literally picked on like a cartoon mouse by Batman the entire time. He's not a rat!!! he is a Fancy Mouse <3
fox Carrey Riddler. I'll be real. HAven't watched Batman Forever. Jim Carrey frightens and perturbs me. But just based on the images of him barring his teeth at me like he's gonna bite, he Feels like a fox. Quit GRINNING at me like that.
One Bad Day <333 my beloathed <3333 I agree with you, vulture fits him so well. can't wait for Batman to snap his dumb neck

PAC: How will 2024 be like for you?
This reading includes:
the general energy of 2024 for you
advice for the year
synchronicities and symbols for 2024
The extended reading includes:
the biggest blessings for this year
your elder futhark rune of the year
a little moodboard
Disclaimer: this is just for entertainment purposes, and as a pick-a-card reading it may not resonate for everyone.
TIPS | BOOK A READING WITH ME | PATREON | LINKTREE | SUGGEST A PAC TOPIC
Pile 1
Knight of Swords, Ten of Pentacles, Knight of Pentacles
"Sometimes it seems that going is just too rough/And things go wrong no matter what I do"
Hello, pile 1, I get the feeling that 2023 didn't treat you that well. There's this feeling of coming out of chaos - the image you picked, your song, even the Knight of Swords seems to be fighting with a murder of crows. I truly get this sense that you come out of the old year almost battered and bruised, but absolutely fucking ready to make 2024 your year. Some of you are even a bit angry - it's that feeling right between anger and passion. I feel a sense of desperation here, it's like you need to get things right this time. For some of you I think that this is related to a relationship (be it romantic, a friendship, or even family), for others I think that this is more work/school related. The specific example that came to me is that you were supposed to finish your degree last year, but you couldn't for some reason and now you really need to whatever it takes to finish it. With the Ten of Pentacles here I see you being successful with whatever this might be for you, even if you have a lot of work ahead of you.
In general, this is a year for acquiring knowledge. If that's your thing I see you reading a lot, maybe even getting into the classics. Maybe that's something that you've always wanted to do, but never had the time. Even if you're not much of a reader I still get the feeling that you'll be reading more this year, it could even be for your job or school. For others of you I see you learning or mastering a language. I have a very specific message that someone is learning a language that is related to their family. It's like, maybe your family immigrated from Italy, let's say, and you never learned Italian, I see you learning it this year. No matter what this is about, this year is all about learning - practical things and life experience too! And I see you having a lot of experiences this year. I see that some of you are coming out of your shell and trying out new things. Going out more, making new friends, exploring new places, that sort of thing.
I also think that this is a year where you will be working on your goals. If you've been dreaming about a promotion or getting into a certain university I see you starting to plan for it and working towards your goals. The vibe is like moving on from the dreaming stage to the acting stage. If you're into manifestation this is also a message for that. Your manifestations are starting to become "real".
Advice: the biggest advice for you this year pile 1, is to put in the work. You need to find a way to keep yourself motivated (this is also a year of learning discipline) and do the work. It doesn't matter if it's hard or boring or that you don't feel like it. It's time to take charge of your life and do the work to become who you want to become. This even applies to relationships, you can't expect to have ride or die friends, for example, if you're not ready to be ride or die for them as well. I wonder if your rune will be Gebo, because this is definitely that give and take energy. You will get exactly what you put in. Take advantage of that pile 1. I also need to note though, that you shouldn't run yourself into the ground. Rest when you need to and take care of yourself. Also, eat well, pile 1! It's time to create better/healthier eating habits.
Synchronicities: clouds, the sun, the color blue, lipstick stains on glass, 15th of April, 111, 555, butterflies, pearls, snow, pine trees
Pile 2
Four of Cups, Three of Cups, Ace of Swords
"All the things that I ran from/I now bring as close to me as I can"
Pile 2, the biggest vibe for you for this 2024 is that you will finally be able to reframe your life and find joy in the little things. You are moving on from the dissatisfaction that comes from constantly imagining something better and learning to be present in the moment and appreciate things as they are. Instead of constantly looking to the side and imagine life as you wish it could be, you will start to love the life you have. There's a sense of being responsible for your own fate here. Like pile 1, if you want change you need to change. This seems more internal though. You are changing your way of thinking, your unconscious bias, working with your shadow basically. Honestly, I am really proud of you pile 2. This is so hard to do, yet so rewarding as well. This is also the year that you stop running. Instead of avoiding your problems/responsibilities you now know that you need to confront you or they will never stop chasing you.
I also see a big focus both on relationships and honoring your feelings. I think that instead of focusing on work like the previous pile, this year your focus is on building stronger relationships with your loved ones and spending time together with them. Enjoying life in the company of others basically. I actually heard the expression "dolce fare niente", which is basically "the pleasure of doing nothing". I think that this is also something that you are embracing. Being able to do nothing, just sitting with your loved ones and watch the world around you. I'm also picking up that one of your goals is spending less time on social media - and one of the advantages will be that you no longer feel the need to compare yourself and your life to other people.
When it comes to honoring your feelings, you will be able to enforce better boundaries, even with yourself. You will learn that if you don't feel comfortable in a certain situation you can leave. Allowing yourself to say no. Again, a year of change, self-development and self-care. Again, congratulations pile 2, this will be hard but so good for you.
Advice: your advice here is to keep an open mind. Don't be too quick to judge yourself or others and take the time to see a situation from various points of view. Your mind will be quite sharp this year and I feel like you'll need it. Be ready to receive divine inspiration. Again, open yourself to new ideas and different ways to see something. I see that some of you are artists, for those of you this is especially important for your art. If you feel like your art isn't "right" at the moment that's the problem. You need to study a different art movement, put yourself in another character's shoes, to turn your whole world upside down and re-learn how to function in it. Also, try to be as truthful as possible, because I get the feeling that any lies that you tell this year might come back to bite you in the ass.
Synchronicities: roses, the moon, the color red, lip gloss, moon charms, the sea, sunsets, tuxedo cats, angels, wings, 18th of June, 888, 434, carnations
Pile 3
World, Hierophant, Three of Pentacles
"No stop signs/Speed limit/Nobody's gonna slow me down"
Pile 3, no one can stop you in 2024. You know exactly what you want and how to get there. I get the feeling that this is a year of achievements for you. Some of you are finishing high school or university. Others are getting their first job or a promotion. Whatever it is, the effort that you put in the past year(s) is paying off and you are seeing the fruits of your labour this year. Your energy is very Capricornian, this might actually be your zodiac sign, but not necessarily. If you have a plan for something that you want to accomplish this year, I can tell you right now that it's probably going to be very successful. I'm even seeing that someone or a couple of people here might go viral? Or at least, you will be very talked about in your community/school/city. You will be known for something that you are doing/will be doing this year. You're getting recognition for your work basically. I advise you to check your natal charts, because I feel like your 10th house use being activated this year.
I'm getting a very specific message that some of you are learning how to take advantage of a strong hierarchical system. I'm getting two very different things here. For some of you this seems related to activism. You're learning how to use the current power structure to do your activism and to make changes. It almost feels like you're exploiting it, but in a good way. For others, this seems more related to work, maybe even school, but it seems more like a workplace environment. And basically you're doing the same thing, you're using the rules to your advantage. Instead of feeling bound by them and wanting to "destroy" them you're finally learning how to get what you want by following them. This is really intriguing. For others, this is more about learning discipline, and how useful it can be for your life. Whilst for others it's about building a better relationship with power structures and people in power. You might have some trauma with people in power and you'll be making positive headway on it during this year.
For those of you that are learning a skill - I actually got witchcraft for some of you - this year you're getting into the "classics". Basically what I mean by this is that instead of making things up as you go, you're going to try a different approach and try to learn the theory. Again, for the magick example, instead of experimenting and doing things your own way you might pick a up a book about the history of magick or about magickal theory. I also see that some of you are traveling as well!
Advice: pile 3, it's time to learn how to ask for help. You are not a burden to other people and must of the time they will actually be delighted to help you, because it means that you trust them and believe in their skills. Ask for help with personal things and also in your work! There's no shame in not knowing something or not being 100% sure on how to do something. I see that you guys are very perfectionist and you might have felt that you need to always rely on yourself, but that's not the truth. It can actually be beneficial for you to ask for help and to ask questions in your workplace. Also, pile 3, you also need to learn how to work in a team. I feel like you will be prompted to do this a lot this year, almost as a test. I know that you're super capable and maybe your work would be better if you did it all by yourself, but the truth is maybe you'll get something completely original and different by working with other people.
Synchronicities: rainbows, the color gold, marigolds, flower crowns, mushrooms, snakes, snake tattoos, 24th of August, September, fairy rings, fairies, 555, 222, the desert
Pile 4
Six of Pentacles, Eight of Swords, Magician
"You're not mean, you're just born to be seen"
Pile 4, I immediately get the feeling that you're very good at giving, but not that good at taking. It's almost like you feel guilty, as if you were never good enough, so you need to give much more than what you are allowed to take. This is what's changing for you this year. You'll start to realize that you are allowed to receive as much as you give, and start to have a better dynamic in your relationships. This could be due to childhood trauma or a toxic relationship that did some damage to your self-esteem. But, this year you'll start to see yourself for who you truly are. I also see you enforcing better boundaries and starting to say no when you really don't feel like/can't do something.
Be careful when signing any contracts this year, because you might miss something important that could potentially get you in trouble. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Also, don't let people pressure you into being generous. The specific example I'm getting is like someone approaching you and being way too nice, sharing a lot of life details and expecting you to do the same. Just because they shared those things, and they seem nice, it doesn't mean you have to do the same - especially if it gives you a weird feeling.
I also think that you have been feeling stuck in your life for a while now, it could be related to work or your health mainly. I see that some of you this is specifically about mental health. But, in 2024 you will begin to see that you aren't actually stuck. There's always something that you can change, even if it's your perspective on something. Don't let your intrusive thoughts dictate your life, this is especially for my people with anxiety and OCD. You aren't your thoughts. Your thoughts are not you. The first step towards freedom is being able to see the facts. You're taking stock of your life, of yourself, and taking the first steps towards freedom this year. I see that this is also going to be a year of big changes for you, pile 4. Like pile 2, this is mostly about internal changes. Just like I told pile 2, I'm very proud of you pile 4. Changing the way you think and see the world is not an easy thing.
Advice: the biggest advice for you this year is to get back your power. Realize that you are the only one who is in control of your life. Sure, we all operate under specific circumstances and those are difficult to change, but what you do in those circumstances is only up to you. Don't let anyone step over you or tell you that you are not good enough. That couldn't be further from the truth. Recognize your power, your skills, your beauty and don't let anyone take it from you. This is a year of gaining independence.
Synchronicities: solar eclipse, glitter, city lights, clocks, feathers, night sky, "sky full of song" by Florence + the Machine, 666, 888, 3rd of March, rain, heart charms

So, Wizarding Robes
I saw this post by @iamnmbr3 and @kittenjammer talking about wizarding fashion and I wanted to talk about this for a while, so I'm going to give my own two cents on it based on fashion history. I love history in general, but fashion history and historical architecture are two I’m incredibly passionate about. So, here we go (post with a lot of pictures ahead):
When I read the books and they mentioned unisex “robes” which function like dresses in a way (as you don’t have to be wearing trousers beneath them:
James whirled about; a second flash of light later, Snape was hanging upside down in the air, his robes falling over his head to reveal skinny, pallid legs and a pair of graying underpants.
(OotP, 647)
And described as being very colorful and billowing, often accompanied by a pointed wizard hat, it was clear to me JKR was trying to invoke the image of the classic fantasy wizard robe:
Especially when it comes to Dumbledore.
The thing is, this style is based on a real historical period and historical styles of the medieval period in Europe.
Medieval Europian Robes
When I'm thinking about the "classic fantasy wizard look" the first historical period that comes to my mind is the 15th century and I'll illustrate why.
Spesificly, the 14th and 15th centuries houppelande. It was a long over garment that looked kinda like a dress with wide, flaring sleeves available for both men and women in various shapes, cuts, and even patterns. Here are examples of some houppelandes:
(As you can also see, early 15th-century fashion comes built-in with silly hats! Just like wizards)
In the 15th century you also have a wide array of cuts of cloaks (and even more silly hats!):
Along with surcoats, that contrary to their name, weren't just for knights to signify on their armor the house they serve:
These 15th-century garments are exactly like wizard fashion is described in the books: billowing robes, colorful and eye-catching, and accompanied by silly hats.
The thing is, all these garments are from the high medieval period and as wizards broke away from muggles only when the Statute of Secrecy was enacted, I'd expect their fashion to follow the muggle trend up to that point and then start diverging. Even the most pure-blooded wizarding families of the modern day, like the Malfoys, integrated with muggle circles up until the Statue of Secrecy, something that would've forced them to dress like the muggles at the time to blend in better.
As the Status of Secrecy was first enacted in 1692, it's time to talk about:
Late 17th Century Fashion
Now, while the high middle ages in Europe had everyone wearing essentially wizard robes and silly hats on the regular, the Statue of Secrecy was enacted much later. Fashion in the 17th century was drastically different from the earlier one mentioned above.
In the late 17th century, this is the kind of dress I'd expect from women in England:
And this is what I'd expect from men:
Which is very different from what is described but would've been the historical basis the wizards would work from.
So what do I think wizarding fashion is actually like?
Well, since the books are in the 1990s and wizards don't really live in a vacuum we know some later influences in fashion did make it in. So, I think wizarding fashion is an odd mix of 15th-century and late 17th-century fashions updated to the time period the wizard grew up in, hence distinct fashion changes between generations like we see in the muggle world.
We see these distinct generational fashion changes with characters like Agusta Longbottom who wears a Vulture hat. These sorts of hats with real birds on them were a thing historically. They were quite fashionable in the late Victorian era, which is when Agusta would've been a child if she's around Dumbledore's age:
Fudge is described as wearing a Bowler Hat, a kind of hat that started catching on in the late 19th century but was still a staple in menswear into the early 20th century, hence indicating Fudge's age.
Ron's yule ball dress robes are described as old-fashioned, again indicating fashions in the wizarding world change at a similar rate to the muggle one. Note that since the 17th century, fashion has been changing quite rapidly and by the 18th century fast fashion where you need to buy new garments each "season" has already started becoming a thing. With all that, I think wizard fashion indeed changes just as rapidly as the muggle one.
Now, that's great, and all, but, what would that odd mish-mash fashion even look like?
Well, I made a few very quick sketches as concept examples for what casual wizarding fashion in the UK might look like if we're working off historical references:
(not my best pieces, it's just to get the concept across)
Note that Wizengamot robes and other formal professional wear would probably be older in style and closer to 17th-century fashions.

Chapter 153: Backstories galore...
IBLIS
She gave us quite the monologue. She talks about her obsession with beauty, perfection and the fear of growing old. Sounds like Hachiro, no? She takes us back in time to a classical Mayan civilization with temples like Chichen Itza.
She uses seduction to kill men, uses humans. For kicks in her human body she eventually conceives a child. What I find interesting, she appears to love the boy. They have good times by the looks of the imagery. But when the child gets old she is forced to kill him. Ibis acts like it doesn't effect her at all, but I don't believe it. Demons blow off their emotions, but maybe she killed him out of empathy for his pain? We honestly don't know the details.
She said he killed him because he was weak but I think it's a lie. I think she's sided with Lucifer to end all humans because she never got over the hurt of loving a human son and losing him. This is her way of avoiding the deep emotional pain of bonding with creatures that do not have an eternal life.
We do know that Iblis also has a fixation on Egyn. The little boy demon the never grows old, that sounds like baggage to me. He's like a surrogate son. Demons fear growing old and being in pain. But they also fear loss, and the loneliness of an eternal life.
It also begs the question, did Iblis have the kid naturally? She doesn't look pregnant in any of the images. The mystery of demon child conception continues...
Demons and Liu are afraid of senior citizens.
Iblis hates Lucy because she's old and wise, she's terrified of people growing old and terrified of the old. Lucy rattles her.
Liu is also rattled by Lucy. We get a flashback of his life and Lucy has been holding the seat of power from his family. They said she stole all the power and magical secrets from their clan, but I doubt that. I bet this was like the Shima family when the demon Yamataka unexpectantly chose Shima....demons have unique preferences of whom they choose to be in a contract with.
When you see the way the Liu clan was run, it's training was based on draconian demon hatred. Sort of the same mentality as young Shiro had. He didn't collaborate with demons and instead sought to destroy every, single one. It's sad really. The only friend Shiro had, and the only reason why Shiro lived into adulthood was because of Mephisto's help. Shiro relied on a demon.
The strongest exorcists get their power and assistance from a collaboration with demons. True intelligence is finding not just violent ways to vanquish the enemy but to see how the enemy ticks. To see if violence isn't always the answer. Demons, like humans are shaped by their experiences and bad experiences warp their worldview. Demons are such powerful creatures that act out their angst. Unfortunately humans tend to be the victims of that retaliation.
When Lucy finally dies (again), she jokes that Liu is too scared to take her place. And he is highly offended by this. Ibis might be afraid of Lucy, but Liu doesn't want to be lumped in with demons.
But he is scared.
Lucy is right.
She also gives him a bit of parting advice.
Even demons have dreams.
They are not as different from humans as we think they are.
This is all the arc knights. Lightning and Lucy openly acknowledge the importance of understanding demons, Angel is still in denial, but it's the truth.
We all know from the manga that collaboration with demons seems to be a better option for a strong exorcist. The strongest exorcists do not see demon relationships as black and white, but more like situationships with a variety of subtexts.
Once Lucy dies, Liu doesn't believe anything she's said and charges into battle to destroy the torch. It looks like he was successful, but we will need to wait until the next chapter to find out. I bet there is a surprise waiting for him that he didn't consider.

choose a fantastic green thing (tarot reading)
"what do you need to know?" image 1: ahh, a classic. woman with fish. iridescent fish, no less. image 2: women want him, men want to be him. whether you love him or hate him, you can't deny... he is a bug. image 3: the bowl. image source not everything may resonate with you, and that's ok! take what does & leave the rest. don't force it.
1.・。.・゜✭
hello friends. what a nice pull! you may be giving or receiving a gift as an act of charity or kindness. it seems like you’re unaware of something, but it’s not a bad thing. consider it blissful ignorance. it may be wise to stay in this state, shunning negativity/corruption. also, some of you may be dealing with children/ a child? maybe someone is having a baby?!
nevertheless, you’re trusting your intuition at this time, and it’s serving you. however, you may be a bit apprehensive about a change/transition you’re going through. know that it’ll happen no matter what you do! you’ll have to eliminate excess one way or another, cutting down to the bare essentials. it’s scary to go through change where you’re unsure what will happen, but you’ve got to do it at some point.
and anyway, you’ve got your intuition at your side. tune in with yourself however you know best, whether that be taking a walk outside, listening to your favorite song, etc, it will help you to regroup.
being sympathetic and loving towards others will also work in your favor. try to open up, and give others what you would like to receive yourself. “forgiving and forgetting” may also be relevant for some of you.
(6 of cups, death reversed, ace of cups)
2.・。.・゜✭
holy FUCK, you need to pump the brakes. holy FUCK, whatever it is, SLOW THE HELL DOWN!!! four of swords literally came flying out of the deck before i even got the chance to shuffle. take this as the universe/your future self urging you, begging you, pleading on hands and knees, to CHILL OUT!
yes, we all know you are very determined and forthright. yes, we all know it, and we all know that has turned out very well for you in other situations. however. at this point, you’re gambling whether things will go your way, and you can tell. loosen your grip on those reigns! resting ain’t so bad!! not every moment needs to be jam packed with activities.
i feel like you know that, but you don’t want to accept that it’s true, or can’t. despite this, you’re feeling the effects. the 10 of swords spells exhaustion & burn out– finding yourself depleted, full of swords, and on the ground (in vain); all the while, the call for action has not even arrived yet.
consider yourself. if you need to have a goal, think of it this way: how can you most effectively relax? what activities (or lackthereof) will make you feel the most refreshed when the time comes to get moving again? in a sense, take all the anxious energy you’re feeling, and put it to use by taking care of yourself. you’re not going to be able to succeed in the way you want to if you’re completely exhausted from ignoring your own needs.
so relax! if you’re not sure how, beg the universe for help. that’s what i did, and now, i have a cat.
(the chariot reversed, 4 of swords, knight of swords, 2 of wands, 10 of wands)
3.・。.・゜✭
your cards strike me as very sweet, my bowl lovers… after going through a trauma in your past, you’re working towards healing by opening up to those around you. now is a great time to be intimate, and not just in the romance way! maybe you’re interested in moving forwards with this, but you aren’t sure which path (which person/people, perhaps) to take. not to fear, however!! page of cups is here! let your heart/intuition lead you, and don’t be afraid to have some fun with it.
consider your emotions exactly as they are: does this person make you feel happy? secure? take your knee jerk reactions and mix them with your observations. after that, the choice should be clear.
six of swords is not always the most fun of cards (typically denoting healing, sloughing through the slop, ect) but trust that where you’re going certainly is… a blast, that is!! it may be a celebration you’re heading towards, but more than anything, it seems like you’ll gain a new sense of freedom. with the page of cups and six of swords present, this is likely how you approach your feelings & relationships, and how they’ve been impacted by your past. expect to shed some light on these patterns, and even overcome them entirely!*
these last two cards cement this message. if you go after what you want, you’re certain to meet success! it can be scary, and it might take a while, but keep trying! you can do this!!!
*for the time being, anyway. progress is not linear! sometimes it's 2 steps forwards to go 1 step back and that's ok!!!
(4 of wands reversed, page of cups, 6 of swords, 7 of cups reversed)
(pulled later: 6 of wands reversed, page of pentacles)
Ws all around my friends

hiiii Brittle, its me, Blue Bird Anon! I come bearing gifts of cookie sprites! Crowned Cupcake Cookie (based on Runebrave's lovely design) and her brother of my own creation, Royal Icing Cookie. I had a lot of fun designing and drawing them so I hope you and everyone enjoy as well! (pssst also my art blog is scarabeeart ;3)
I saw an anon guess that Royal Icing was the pure opposite of his sister, and while that wasn't my original concept for him, I thought the contrast between the two would be a very funny idea hjggffg him being a totally normal, genuinely good guy while his sister is. like that.
But the idea I had for him was a classic prince charming, but with the levels cranked to 11. Brave, chivalrous, humble, generous, rides a white horse, he's got it all! All he wants is to sweep Y/N Cookie off their feet like in a romantic fairy tale and ride into the sunset for their perfect happily ever after together <3 May let the prince charming thing go to his head as he has a secret hero complex and will often put Y/N Cookie into danger purely just so he can heroically swoop in and rescue them. And while his sister is more physical with her use of force to chase away those who get too close to Y/N Cookie, Royal Icing is more manipulative and unhanded. Not above willing to plant fake evidence on other suitors and use it as a way to turn Y/N against them and only trust him. "These Cookies are merely trying to marry you only to claim the throne, they want to usurp you, your adviser is scheming and plotting against you" and all the other fairy tale tropes. Will never fess up to sneaking around because his perfect prince image is incredibly important to him. You trust him, right? He's your fiance! Your prince charming, your knight in shining armor. Of course he wouldn't lie to you <3
(hehe sorry for writing so much! I've been thinking about this for too long hjgfhjgf)
First of all.
That’s some damn incredible work you made here. You are getting a follow from me!
Crowned Cupcake now actually looks like canon compared to my more simple style! She’s even pulling a Cherry Blossom with that triangle mouth there!
Royal Icing too! He looks just as amazing, definitely the charismatic type that no cookie would doubt has a dark side to him! Both of them are just wonderfully done and I really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to do this!
I did think about Icing being exactly like his sister rather than being a kind soul, with him taking the more psychological approach rather then the brute forcing Crowned would do. He’s willing to play any card in his hand to turn it in his favor, even if it meant falsely accusing other cookies if it meant getting them of the picture.
You would trust him more at first. After all, he hadn’t done anything wrong to warrant any kind of suspicion on him! These liars can’t prove anything against your Prince, so you’ll take his side more often then not.
Overall, this is spectacular and I greatly appreciate the work that was done here!

Ship whiteknight?
Why white knight? Well let me show you
So, we will start out with the obvious: beacon. why would I ship this annoying dork with a girl that is clearly not interested and has rejected his advances multiple times? It’s simple, I don’t I ship the jaune that helps people,
See he’s a dumb teenager, they both are, but the key here is that jaune matures, sure the intended comedy left more than a little room for sour interpretation, he stopped and saw that she wanted to be with another, and promptly ceased his advances, this is very key to his characterization that we must forget, he genuinely wants her to be happy. And when Neptune beefs it because of his own insecurities? Jaune doesn’t come in for the rebound or any opportunistic sense, no, he confronts him and makes sure Weiss has a good evening.
Not only that, he follows up on his promise to Pyrrha at the dance, this once more highlights his good qualities, he may not be particularly clever or insightful at times, but when he gets it, he gets it
At his heart, he’s someone who tries his best and wants only the best for others. Rocking the dress while played for laughs, still shows that he will go above and beyond because people matter to him
(Also doing this in front of Weiss is important too, he’s not afraid of acting the fool to his crush, not at all! Hes been setting aside the macho bravado, which is a good thing if he’s ever to be in a real relationship) Now onto some Weiss analysis from the beacon era, pompous, classic rich girl, doesn’t have time for all this nonsense and is a career girl through and through- and though she would never admit it, she’s just as much of a dolt as those that surround her,
But we know she’s come from a terrible household, cold was putting it nicely, her fathers a terrible man who doesn’t love anything except money, her mother is an alcoholic that didn’t love them enough (if at all) her older sister being the only member of family where she’s had a consistent positive relationship, and she ended up running away to the military, leaving behind all the eldest daughter shield duties and trauma to her, which, boy that was a lot. And her little brother, her father’s favorite, she’s not anywhere near mature enough to confront, separate and acknowledge her feelings for said brother who is being raised to be exactly as detestable as the man that sired him. And what choice does Whitley have? He was so young, and he was left behind. Its safe to say she wants a normal, loving life. Desperately. It’s easy to see it in things like Zwei, how over the moon she was for the little guy, and in winter, how she comes to idolize her and seeks her approval over anyone’s. This girl is STARVED for affection.
With beacon being her chance to spread her wings a bit, it’s also natural to see that she would be interested in pursuing a romantic relationship, at her own pace. It’s no wonder that at first early volumes Weiss didn’t like Jaune-she doubtlessly dealt with the bravado of a dozen boys trying to gain her favor because of her status and wealth. Additionally, jaunes impostor syndrome ultimately bled into his interactions with Weiss as well, he was faking it all in beacon, what’s a little more to impress a girl? it’s not like shed like the real him, right? This and Weiss’s self-image of needing to be this pristine, perfect princess is also a huge factor as to why white knight wouldn’t work at beacon, its simply too early, Jaunes attempts were at the height of both their respective character flaws/failings. There's no WAY it would have worked.
Which is why she gravitated to Neptune, I think it was her trying to get out of her shell and try new things, yet still in the trappings of the “need to be pristine” persona. Thinking about this, seriously, yeah of course she was going to get a crush on Neptune, it’s what she knows except she’s convinced herself that its “different”. This suave guy that’s well dressed, knows what a perfect contrast to jaune doing is. It’s not like Weiss really knows Neptune but she thinks she does, at this stage of her life she’s really ruled by her first impressions of people (Ruby Pyrrha Jaune are some examples)
Back to the dance, an entire night worrying, feeling all sorts of emotions after what is likely the first time she opened herself up to a relationship and she’s been left behind. But of course, she must act like it doesn’t bother her, she’s Weiss Schnee, she’s above little insecurities like that. And along comes Jaune with the dress, she saw him make himself the fool in front of everyone laughing along it was a good time for all.
Lo and behold! When Neptune came back she started asking what happened, that she thought he was too embarrassed, Neptune says that it was Jaune that convinced him to come. The boy she’s rejected time and time again, the one she likely thought no more than a nuisance at best, took it all in stride and made sure she had a good time, he definitively proved himself as someone trustworthy, especially with how “an arc never goes back on their word”. It’s no wonder that at this point many people think it could potentially work out, they both have matured, and Weiss finally sees that while Jaunes attempts were annoying and grating, they were always sincere, especially when you consider he had no idea the significance of the Schnee name before.
This is all a solid foundation to work with, they’ve matured a decent bit from where they started, both now able to see each other in a better light. Its not that they are head over heels for each other, but you can’t deny this works as a solid foundation for a possible relationship down the line
But of course, it’s not all gumdrops and Weiss-cream
FALL OF BEACON Moving onto the fall of beacon the first person jaune calls for help with Pyrrha is Weiss, in his most vulnerable moment he reaches out to her, now could this just be how the writers decided the order of things would go? Sure. But consider this
I think he believes Weiss to be the best among them, someone who he sees as levelheaded and skilled to do something about it, since her semblance is the most flexible one of them all. If theres anyone who can do something, it’s her.
POST FALL
They’ve both are in their lowest point, truly where the new versions of themselves are put to the test, and oddly enough, both share a parallel with returning home both wouldn’t choose to go home, but one of them was forced to. Jaune decided to persist with his dream and followed through to help his friends, his loyalty is almost second to none: he was a hack, a fraud, no business being amongst his heroes, a dork at the best of times. The easiest thing he could do is return home. No one would blame him. But he didn’t.
Jaune is loyal, astoundingly so, he has a family, with 7 sisters, he could have gone home after the fall, no one would have thought twice about it. Instead, he stuck through, traveling for weeks through monster infested terrains for his friends with whatever they needed. At this point has been steadily improving, no longer just some punk that doesn’t know what they are doing.
(mans stopped a whole ass charging man-devil-horse -hybrid dead in its tracks, noodle boy has been promoted to Pasta with Beef) And yet...he’s still very affected by the fall, mourning. In the battle of haven he was recklessly pursuing cinder, he’s someone with a lot of pain, someone who clearly doesn’t think themselves as important as those that surround him.
Meanwhile everything in the Schnee manor is shit show, Weiss is back in the middle of her family dynamic, looking to be free once more. She ends up struck by her father, disowned and generally treated with scorn, then she gets kidnapped by bandits afterwards. Theres really nothing Weiss wouldn’t do to find real family. By the time they are all reunited, I think she will notice just how the members of Team J_NR are people to trust and confine in. Knowing what we know, Nora and Ren didn’t really have anywhere else to go given they are orphans, so it would make sense for them to follow ruby to haven. But once again, Jaune demonstrates true courage and chooses the hard path. That means something for sure. Skipping to the haven fight again, this is another heavy moment, particularly when Weiss-
Well, Weiss was nothing less than struck down. And what is Jaunes immediate response? The only one he seems to have, to be there, no matter what. And in that instinct to protect, in caring for others, he unlocks the mystery of his soul.
At his core he only wants to help, a selfless desire so strong, so literally suffused in his very essence of being that it actively manifests itself in the world.
You can’t tell me this means nothing to her. For a girl that has lived in a stifling coffin of a home. To find someone who’s so selfless and caring, despite never once needing to. Finding someone that manages to see her for who she is, who cares for their happiness without asking anything in return. Someone whom despite all they have suffered, still pushes forward to be there every moment they can in service for others. Someone who reached out with their very soul to halt the hand of death, fueling your own to give you the strength to come back, to your loved ones, never once even mentioning it. Is it any real surprise that love is in the cards for these two?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What makes this ship work is all the post beacon stuff, they both have suffered terrible losses yet they still need to push through, they both have matured and see each other for what they really are, they can both look back on their beacon days and reminisce, laugh about how stupid they were, mourn lost friends and in that, they find comfort. They have both been given the space to improve and be better, and it’s not hard to see the qualities they would see in each other Jaune is a loyal and loving person, he knows about family and would sooner suffer ills before ever breaking a promise, someone who WILL love someone to the fullest. Weiss may be cold, but she’s a sweetheart under all that, she’s been hurt and desperately wants to love and be loved, something jaune wouldn’t hesitate to do.
Noah/Nora Fox ✯ He/Him or She/Her, 28 ✯ Your oldest friend and the person that had helped create the band with you-- the only person that had believed in you during the earlier days. The very same person that can barely look you in the eyes, and has shifted from a happy ray of sunshine to the classic partier that sleeps around. Will you be able to fix what's been broken?
Special Romance: Choose to have simply been best friends with them or have been in a relationship prior to you leaving.
Angelina Thorne ✯ She/Her, 28 ✯ The woman that has taken over for you within the band. With an attitude as fiery as her hair, Angelina isn't one to back down from a challenge, especially if she feels threatened. It'll take a while to break down her walls, but she may just be worth the effort.
"I don't know what bugs me more. The fact that you're here or the fact that I can't fucking stand it when you're not."
Elijah/Elizabeth Knight ✯ He/Him or She/Her, 34 ✯ Your old manager hasn't changed in the slightest; barring that they're no longer married. You don't know how you feel about the news, nor do you wish to comprehend what it could potentially mean, but you do know that nothing would ever happen as long as they kept you at arm's length.
Special Romance: Choose to have had a crush on them, but nothing ever happened because they were married.
"You are, and will always be, my only exception."
Jaime Winters ✯ They/Them, 28 ✯ One of the few people you've let close to you within your new "normal" life. They're not the most talkative person, which you can appreciate, but they always make sure you know that they're listening, and they can brighten any room with a signature smile of theirs. Plus, when they do get comfortable their teasing quips and sly remarks can lighten the mood if needed.
"You're still you. You'll never be anyone else to me. I don't care how famous you are."
Harry/Harley Sharpe ✯ He/Him or She/Her, 29 ✯ A security officer that's been placed to protect you, and the band as a whole, during the duration of the Legacy Tour. They seem to be overall a gentle individual, surprising given their career choice, but their drive to protect and serve creates quite an intimidating presence for anyone wishing to cause you harm. Will you be able to resist their gentle eyes and understanding nature?
"I don't know why this happened, or if it's smart that it's continuing to happen, but I can't stop. I don't know if I'd even want to if I could."
it sucks that all the knight parts of arknights ch11 are just not great. i think they're very good at writing the struggles and resistance of ordinary people through the salvation corps and people like miss golding and feist's grandma, and also at like the terror of facing powerful sarkaz in battle and amiya briefly experiencing the ancestral suffering of existing as a sarkaz and stuff like that, so from one scene to another the tension is maintained well enough even if i think the pacing isn't great. except when it's about the glasgow gang. when it's about them there's just suddenly nothing happening.
and it's not unclear what they're supposed to be contributing to the story here: victoria had been falling apart under the selfish greed of its nobility long before the sarkaz occupied the city, and to save victoria requires having a vision of how you want to define victoria, of what parts of victoria can and should be saved. the culture of victoria built much of its sense of honor and justice on the image of its (steam) knights so there is a message in the steam knights being missing and the heir to the throne and her knights being a street gang. what is worth swearing loyalty to as a knight when the difference between the throne and the people, between the concept and the lived reality of victoria is so vast? these are classic knight themes and very easy to work with because of how timeless they are. there is potential too in the contrast between victoria's lost knights (as an ideal warrior that fights to defend its homeland) versus the sarkaz mercenary soldiers (the reality of warriors fighting to reclaim and avenge a lost home) and how people like horn straddle the line. they touch on it briefly when golding laments that the play about the steam knights that she hoped would teach the kids knightly ideals only cements the image of the steam knights as a bludgeon against their enemies.
but every time the focus is on the actual royal heir and her knights they keep telling you the same shit. vina is an important figure. vina has an important choice to make soon. vina has much responsibility on her shoulders. vina has many people putting their trust in her to make an important choice soon because she is important. shit dude we've known that since the game released, we were all waiting for the main story to go to victoria and finally let her do shit, and now 2 chapters of 20+ stages in victoria later she's still not really done anything at all except stand around and have other people tell you how important she is and how she's definitely gonna do something important any moment now. all this effort to get her hands on the royal sword with hardly any indication of siege's own capabilities or convictions as a ruler. everyone in glasgow gang keeps gassing her up and she's just standing there.
so you end up not buying any of the knightly ideals they're talking about because for every time dagda or indra or morgan say they're protecting victoria and its future by sucking up to siege there's a factory worker risking it all and building a doohickey to actually make a stand with. and when you finally find the sword of victoria's kings your path is barred by the last steam knight who still moves through pure strength of will to protect the one thing he can still truly say is "the victoria he fought for", and you're not even obligated to actually fight him. man, what are we even doing here then.
Chapter List
The warm glow of the setting sun filtered through the tall windows of Wayne Manor, casting long shadows across the room as Bruce stood in front of his mirror, adjusting the cufflinks on his tailored suit. The faint sound of classical music played in the background, a soft and calming contrast to the storm of thoughts running through his mind.
Alfred, ever-present and always meticulous, stood a few feet away, inspecting the final touches of Bruce's attire. He took a moment to adjust Bruce's bowtie, before he stepped back and gave a nod of approval.
"You look dashing, as always, Master Wayne," Alfred remarked with a hint of pride in his voice. "A yacht party, is it? Quite the venue for a police fundraiser."
Bruce exhaled softly, his gaze distant as he continued adjusting his cufflinks, though he didn’t seem particularly focused on them. "You know it’s not really about the fundraiser."
Alfred tilted his head, studying Bruce for a moment. "Ah. I see. Miss Manning, I presume?"
Bruce didn’t answer right away, but the faintest smile played on his lips as he glanced at his reflection. "She'll be there. At least, I hope she will. I invited the entire department."
Alfred let out a thoughtful hum, crossing his arms as he moved to stand next to Bruce. "You’ve been in better spirits lately, if I may say so. Wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that you've been working with her again, would it?"
Bruce paused, catching Alfred's gaze in the mirror. He shrugged, trying to play it off, though he knew it was no use—Alfred could see straight through him. "Maybe," he murmured, a hint of a smirk tugging at his lips. "We work well together."
Alfred’s expression softened, but his voice carried its usual weight of wisdom. "I daresay, Master Wayne, you're a bit happier these days."
Bruce chuckled under his breath, shaking his head slightly. "We’re not together anymore, Alfred. She’s a coworker." The words felt wrong coming out of Bruce’s mouth.
Alfred studied him for a moment longer before speaking. "You know, there are worse fates than working with someone you care about, even if things aren’t as they once were. Perhaps it's not the end of the story yet."
Bruce looked down, his fingers tracing the edges of his cufflink absentmindedly. "Maybe not. But I don’t want to pressure her into anything. She’s been through a lot, and so have I. If working together is all we can manage right now... I’ll take it."
Alfred stepped back, straightening the lapel of Bruce's jacket before placing his hands behind his back. "Well, if nothing else, Master Wayne, it’s shaping up to be a lovely evening. I trust you’ll make the most of it."
Bruce gave a nod, but his thoughts were already elsewhere. His mind drifted to the image of Marie—her fierce determination, her humor, and the way she always challenged him.
It was more than just admiration; he cared about her deeply, and despite the distance between them now, he couldn’t help but hold on to the hope that maybe tonight could be different.
With a deep breath, Bruce adjusted his jacket one final time, turning toward the door. "I guess we’ll see what happens."
Alfred gave him a reassuring smile as he followed behind. "Indeed, sir. Shall I ready the car?"
Bruce nodded. "Yeah. Let’s get this party started."
—-------------------------------
The soft evening breeze off Gotham Harbor brushed against Marie’s skin as she stepped onto the grand yacht, her heels clicking lightly on the polished deck.
The scent of saltwater and expensive cologne mingled with the faint notes of the orchestra playing in the background, reminding her how far removed this was from the rough streets of Gotham.
The twilight sky was a mix of soft pinks and purples, reflecting off the calm waters, but it was the lights of the yacht that stole the attention. Music played faintly from the upper deck, where Gotham’s elite mingled and sipped champagne.
Marie tugged at the fabric of her deep navy blue gown, smoothing out a wrinkle as she walked alongside Commissioner Gordon. The dress hugged her figure perfectly, flowing elegantly around her legs as she moved. The halter neckline left her shoulders bare, with her long dark curls cascading down her back in soft waves.
“You clean up nice, Manning,” Gordon teased lightly, giving her a sidelong glance.
Marie chuckled, shaking her head. “Don’t get used to it. The next time you see me, I’ll be in a Kevlar vest and jeans.”
Gordon grinned, adjusting his tie as they approached the entrance. “I wouldn’t dream of it.”
As they entered the party, greeting a few familiar faces from the department and city officials, Marie’s eyes shifted toward the front of the yacht, where Bruce stood, speaking with a small group of guests.
Even from a distance, Bruce exuded his usual charm—tall, impeccably dressed in a black tuxedo, his hair neatly styled, and a faint smile playing on his lips as he politely engaged in conversation with several people at once, all mesmerized by his charm.
“Notice you haven’t mentioned Bruce much lately,” Gordon remarked casually, keeping his voice low as they approached the party. “How are you guys doing?”
Marie glanced at Gordon, her lips curling into a slight smile. “We’re… taking things extra slow,” she replied, her tone light but with a hint of something more beneath it. “If you can even call it that.”
Gordon raised an eyebrow but didn’t pry. “Ah. I see.”
She gave a small shrug, her eyes lingering on Bruce for a moment before looking back at Gordon. “Honestly, we’re not really together anymore.”
Gordon nodded thoughtfully, his hands slipping into his pockets as they continued walking. “I won’t push. But I’ve always liked him. He’s always been supportive of the department—this is what, the second fundraiser he’s thrown for the GCPD in the last few months?”
Gordon’s gaze softened, a knowing gleam in his eyes. “He’s got a good heart, despite what people say about him just being a playboy. And it doesn’t hurt that he has… well, resources.” He paused, sweeping his hand toward the grandeur of the yacht—its gleaming decks, the dazzling lights casting reflections on the water.
He went on, "I don’t think I’ve ever said more than a few words to the guy before, you know."
Marie smirked to herself. You’ve definitely said more than a few words to him.
Her thoughts trailed back to how deeply Bruce was connected to the GCPD, not just as himself but as Batman. She wondered if Gordon ever suspected, but that was a conversation for another day.
The atmosphere was vibrant, laughter and the clinking of glasses echoing in the night air. Servers weaved through the crowd with trays of champagne and hors d'oeuvres. The yacht, with its glittering lights, felt like a world apart from the gritty reality she was used to.
Marie scanned the party, taking in the sights of Gotham’s elite, but her mind wandered back to Bruce. It felt strange, being here like this—so close, yet still keeping a distance.
Gordon, sensing her momentary distraction, gave her a soft nudge. “Come on, let’s make the rounds before you slip off to wherever you plan to disappear to.”
Marie smiled, following Gordon into the crowd, but her eyes couldn’t help but drift back to Bruce, who had already noticed her arrival.
Bruce excused himself from the group he was speaking to as soon as he saw Marie and Gordon approaching.
His eyes found Marie, and for a moment, the noise of the party faded into the background. She looked stunning—breathtaking, even. The deep navy gown hugged her figure perfectly, the soft waves of her hair catching the light just right.
For someone who was always so focused and no-nonsense, there was something about seeing her like this, outside of the chaos of their usual world, that stopped him in his tracks. He couldn’t tear his eyes away, a subtle, warm smile tugging at his lips as he walked toward her, every other distraction fading into insignificance.
“Commissioner Gordon, Marie,” Bruce greeted with a nod, his voice smooth but a touch warmer than the usual Wayne charm he used at events like these.
“Mr. Wayne,” Gordon responded with a polite nod. His formalities were a front, as always, but Bruce could see the familiar warmth in his eyes.
Bruce's eyes locked onto Marie, and for a moment, he forgot to speak. His mouth opened slightly, but no words came out, his gaze tracing the way the lights caught in her hair and the warmth in her eyes. She noticed, her lips curving into a soft smile, breaking the silence for him.
"Hey, Bruce," she said, her voice warm but a bit guarded, though she didn’t pull her gaze from his. "Quite the event you’ve put together."
Bruce gave a slight shrug, his smile deepening as his eyes remained on her. “Had to keep things interesting. I was really hoping to see you here.”
Before Marie could respond, a woman from the crowd—a socialite Bruce barely recognized—swept in with bubbly enthusiasm. “Detective Manning! Oh, it’s been forever. You look lovely. Come, you must meet the newest member from the city’s cultural council.”
Marie glanced at Bruce, her smile tightening slightly. “I’ll catch up with you later.”
With that, she was whisked away, leaving Bruce watching her disappear into the crowd.
—-------------------------------
The lights of the yacht cast shimmering reflections across the dark sea, laughter and clinking glasses mingling with the soft lap of waves. Bruce leaned against the railing to take a brief respite between mingling, his gaze shifting between the guests around him, though his attention briefly wandered elsewhere.
With a practiced motion, he slipped his hand into his jacket, fingers brushing over the slim device hidden within. It was a compact, high-frequency scanner he always kept on him, subtly tuned to the city's emergency channels.
Tonight might be a rare moment away from Gotham’s shadows, but he knew better than to drop his guard completely. The scanner offered a quiet reassurance—a link to the undercurrents of the city, alerting him to any crime that might demand his presence. This was part of who he was now, a constant awareness of the other life he led.
Satisfied by the silence on the scanner, he allowed himself a slow exhale, just as Gordon approached with a whiskey in each hand. Bruce slipped his hand out of his pocket, straightening, trying to ease into the rare luxury of a normal evening—at least for a moment.
"Some event you put on, Bruce," Gordon started, handing Bruce a whiskey, "And I’ve got to say, I’m pretty damn impressed that you threw this entire yacht party just to impress Manning."
Bruce shot him a sidelong glance, half a smirk pulling at his lips. "That obvious?"
Gordon chuckled, shaking his head. “Come on, Bruce. This is the second GCPD event you’ve hosted this year. Either you’re gunning for Gotham’s Philanthropist of the Decade, or you’ve got your eye on one of my detectives. And between you and me, I don’t think it’s the philanthropy.”
Bruce shrugged, trying to downplay it. "It’s not just for her."
"Sure," Gordon replied, raising an eyebrow. "It’s for the other 200 guests you barely know."
Bruce sighed, his smirk fading. He wasn’t about to deny it. Marie was the reason he was here, the reason he’d gone through all the trouble. "She’s important."
Gordon gave a little shrug, his mouth quirking up as if he couldn't argue even if he tried. “Can’t say you're wrong there,” he replied, glancing around the deck with a hint of amusement.
Moments passed in comfortable silence, the sound of the waves lapping against the yacht blending with the music and mingling guests.
Gordon’s eyes narrowed as he watched Marie across the party. “Listen, Bruce, I see her like a daughter. She’s tough as nails, but she’s been through hell. I don’t want to see her get hurt.”
Bruce met Gordon’s intense gaze. “We aren’t dating anymore, Commissioner. Marie made it clear.”
Gordon leaned in slightly, his voice low and firm. “I get that, but let’s not kid ourselves. I can see it in both your eyes. There’s still something there, and you know it.”
Bruce swallowed hard, the weight of Gordon’s words pressing on him. After a moment, he admitted, “I love her.” The air was thick with honesty.
Gordon studied Bruce for a moment, then sighed, crossing his arms. “Look, when you find someone like Marie, you don’t let that go. Not for anything.”
Bruce opened his mouth to respond, but Gordon cut him off, his voice low but firm. “We always make it harder than it needs to be. You think this stuff just falls into place? Hell no. You’ve got to put in the work. You care about her, right?”
“Yeah, of course I do,” Bruce said, frustration edging into his voice.
Gordon’s lips twitched into a smirk. “Then show her. You don’t get many shots at something like this, kid. Don’t screw it up.”
Bruce nodded, the weight of Gordon’s words hitting him. He knew he was right.
Gordon leaned in slightly, voice dropping. “Fight for her. She’s worth it.”
Without another word, Bruce pushed off from the railing and moved through the crowd, weaving between guests and waitstaff. As he neared, he caught sight of Marie, her face lighting up the moment their eyes met. She excused herself from the group she’d been chatting with and walked toward him.
“Bruce,” she greeted with that warm, playful tone he loved. “Looks like you survived Gordon’s pep talk.”
He smirked, leaning closer. “Just barely.”
Marie chuckled, the sound sending a rush of warmth through him. “I have to say, this party is a lot more fun than I expected.”
“Yeah, well…” Bruce began, his heart thudding in his chest. He knew he needed to say more—everything he’d just talked about with Gordon—but as she looked at him, the words got stuck in his throat. Her smile was warm and genuine, the creases by her eyes deepening with the sincerity of it. It was the kind of smile that made him forget everything else for a moment.
He chickened out. “Uh, did you try the fried shrimp cocktail yet?” he asked as a poor attempt to pivot. “I had them use Panko breadcrumbs because I know they’re your favorite.”
Marie burst out laughing, eyes twinkling. “Oh, I’ve already stashed a handful in my purse for later.”
Bruce’s face lit up, but before he could respond, a blonde socialite in a slinky red dress sidled up beside him, her gaze laser-focused on him, “Well, if it isn’t Bruce Wayne!” she purred, sidling up to him with a flirtatious smile. “You still haven’t gotten back to me about that dinner invitation I sent.”
Bruce turned, forcing a polite smile. “Hey, Tiffany. Sorry about that. Work has been... busy lately.”
“Busy?” she echoed, raising an eyebrow playfully. “You must be the busiest billionaire in Gotham. I was starting to think you were avoiding me.”
He rubbed the back of his neck, feeling a bit awkward. “No, not at all. Just juggling a lot right now. You know how it is.”
Tiffany stepped closer, a teasing glint in her eye. “Well, I’d hate to think I’m not a priority. How about we make up for lost time and grab dinner this week?”
Bruce shifted his weight slightly, caught between courtesy and discomfort. “That sounds nice, but I really can’t commit to anything right now. I’ve got a lot on my plate.”
“In that case, would you do me the honor of a dance?” She responded.
Bruce tensed, stealing a glance at Marie, who raised an eyebrow, amused at watching Bruce squirm.
Tiffany turned to Marie, her smile sugary sweet but laced with sharpness. “I hope you don’t mind, darling. It’s just one dance, after all. You two aren’t… together, right?”
Marie casually placed her hand on her hip, her expression calm and nonchalant as the socialite practically draped herself over Bruce, eager for a dance. “We’re not,” Marie said coolly, her tone dismissive. “You two go ahead. Have fun.”
Bruce shot her a quick glance, his eyes pleading for rescue—an unmistakable look that only she could interpret as help me.
But Marie, enjoying the moment far too much, simply smiled, raising her eyebrows as if to say you’re on your own.
With Marie’s calm demeanor offering no way out, Bruce forced a polite smile, suppressing a groan. “Alright,” he sighed, offering his hand to the socialite. “Just one.”
Marie bit her lip, barely stifling a laugh as the woman eagerly pulled Bruce toward the dance floor, leaving him to navigate the awkward situation on his own.
As he led her to the dance floor, Bruce felt a mix of obligation and disappointment swirling in his chest.
As they began to dance, he tried to engage in small talk with Tiffany, but his mind kept drifting back to Marie. He could see her out of the corner of his eye, and a pang of regret hit him as he noticed the slight furrow of her brow.
The music swelled, and he moved through the dance with practiced ease, but it felt hollow. With every spin and turn, he wanted to be with Marie, to share this moment with her. But the socialite kept chatting, her laughter ringing in his ears as he forced himself to nod along, all the while stealing glances back at Marie.
Marie stood there, watching them dance. At first, a small smirk tugged at her lips, amused by the sight of Bruce being his usual charming, polished self. It was almost funny watching him try to navigate Tiffany’s relentless flirtation. Any girl would be lucky to dance with Bruce Wayne—Gotham’s most eligible bachelor, tall, handsome, and effortlessly charismatic.
But as the dance went on, her amusement faded, replaced by a dull ache she hadn’t expected. The way Tiffany’s hand rested on his shoulder, the easy smile Bruce wore, even though Marie knew he was just being polite—it all stirred something deeper within her. A part of her hated seeing him like that, so close to another woman, even if it was just a casual dance.
They were work partners again, and she really did enjoy that. Working with Batman was exhilarating, and their dynamic had always been strong, even when things were... complicated. But if she was being honest, it wasn’t the case-solving or the late-night stakeouts that made her heart race. It was being around Bruce. Just Bruce.
Watching him hold Tiffany, even in something as simple as a formal waltz, brought back memories of how he used to hold her. There was an intimacy to it, one that she missed more than she’d let herself admit.
Without another thought, she turned sharply, slipping away into the crowd, needing space from the sight that unsettled her more than she cared to acknowledge.
When the song finally ended, he turned to look for her, only to find that she had vanished. The tightness in his chest deepened, and he felt a surge of frustration. Where did she go?
As soon as the dance ended, Bruce weaved through the party, a faint sense of unease growing in his chest. He spotted Gordon near the bar again and quickly made his way over.
“Have you seen Marie?” Bruce asked, trying to sound casual but failing to hide the edge in his voice.
Gordon looked up, his brow furrowing slightly. “She’s probably slipped away to somewhere quieter. You know how she is with these events.”
Bruce nodded, already turning to leave. He scanned the deck and the various corners of the yacht, but she was nowhere to be found in the bustling crowd. The tension in his chest tightened as he slipped through the more secluded areas of the ship, away from the noise and chatter.
Finally, he found her. She was standing alone on a private deck, leaning against the railing, the moonlight casting a soft glow over her figure as the waves rolled gently below. The sound of the party was distant here, replaced by the quiet hum of the sea.
He approached slowly, his voice low and smooth. “There you are.”
Marie didn’t turn to face him, her gaze fixed on the horizon. “Needed some air,” she replied, her tone casual but carrying an unmistakable edge.
Bruce stepped closer, concern etched on his brow. “You didn’t have to disappear.”
Finally turning to him, she crossed her arms, a playful smirk forming. “What, so I could watch you twirl with the bitch in the red dress?”
“The bitch in the red dress,” he began, trying to sound more at ease than he felt, “is a woman I’d keep up with casually—at least as far as the social scene goes. You know, the kind of thing I have to do to keep up appearances... keep the playboy image alive.” He gave a casual shrug, trying to dismiss any notion of it being anything more than that.
Marie tilted her head, a playful smirk tugging at her lips. “Right,” she teased, her tone dripping with humor. “Keeping up appearances... Must’ve been so hard to sleep around with all that ‘work’ you had to do. I’m sure it was such a sacrifice.” Her eyes sparkled with mischief, and Bruce felt the heat rise in his cheeks, clearly caught off guard.
He gave her a mock glare. “You’re making it sound worse than it was. I was seeing Tiffany before I met you, I might add.”
Marie raised an eyebrow and smirked. “Well, thank you for clarifying, Bruce. I still didn’t want to watch you dance with her, though.”
“You told me to,” he shot back, a teasing glint in his eye.
“Doesn’t mean I have to enjoy it,” she quipped, a playful challenge in her voice.
Bruce joined her at the railing, leaning casually, the cool night air wrapping around them as they stared out at the water. The sounds of the party faded into a distant hum.
“You know,” Marie said, breaking the silence, her tone thoughtful, “I was just thinking about that first night we met. At the GCPD gala you hosted at Wayne Manor. That was the first time I actually met you as Bruce Wayne—didn't have a clue I’d already crossed paths with Batman.”
Bruce turned to her, a nostalgic smile tugging at his lips. “I think about that night more often than I’d like to admit.”
She paused, a teasing glimmer in her eyes. “I’m starting to think you planned that whole event just to meet me.”
Bruce laughed, the sound warm and genuine. “You’re just figuring that out now?”
She scrunched her nose playfully. “What can I say? I’m a little slow on the uptake sometimes.”
“Look, I couldn’t exactly ask you out as Batman. So I needed a way to meet you as... me. The fundraiser was my shot. I figured it was the best chance to sweep you off your feet—without the mask, without all the shadows. Just me, Bruce.” He smirked, the corners of his eyes crinkling with amusement.
Her eyes locked onto his, curiosity flaring. “It’s kind of flattering, you know, that you threw that party just to ask me out.”
He nodded, his gaze steady. “Just like how I threw this whole party just to see you tonight.”
Her breath caught slightly at his words. “You could’ve just called, you know,” she said, a hint of vulnerability creeping in.
“I have been,” he replied, his voice sincere.
When silence lingered, he took a deep breath, laying it all out. “I miss you.”
The words hung in the air before Marie responded.
“You see me at work,” she said, glancing away toward the water, her voice tinged with sadness.
“I miss you—everything about you,” he confessed, his heart laid bare before her. The weight of his words were heavy and electric. “I love having you back as my partner, but I miss having the rest of you too.”
The world around them faded into a blur, both lost in the gravity of their shared history. Bruce took a small step back, cautious not to overwhelm her with the depth of his feelings.
Sensing that Marie wanted to move on from the subject, Bruce said, “By the way, your necklace is beautiful,” his eyes drawn to the delicate piece resting against her collarbone. The blue gemstone caught the soft glow of the lights, shimmering like the depths of the ocean.
“Thanks. I picked it out myself,” she replied, a shy smile flickering to life on her lips.
“You always have an eye for the best ones,” he said, genuine admiration lacing his tone.
“Not when it comes to men,” she shot back, smirking, and Bruce feigned a dramatic gasp.
“Hey now, that was low,” he teased, laughter spilling from his lips, but it was a fleeting moment of levity.
She laughed before softening for a moment, "It’s actually been nice working with you again.”
Bruce smirked, catching the shift. "I’ll take that as a compliment. I agree."
Marie rolled her eyes, teasing. "If I’ve got to have a partner, I suppose I’m glad it’s you. Though sometimes, I wonder if I’d be better off going solo. You know, like a Lone Wolf."
She smirked before continuing, "Who knows, maybe I’ll throw on some black leather and start my own vigilante gig."
"Oh yeah?" Bruce crossed his arms, leaning in a little closer. "You’re sounding pretty damn confident. You really think you’d be better off working cases by yourself?"
Marie crossed her arms, a smirk tugging at her lips. "The Red Lotus case would’ve been wrapped up by now if you hadn’t swooped in at the Billiard’s Club and almost gotten my nose broken."
Bruce raised an eyebrow, amusement flickering in his eyes. "Sorry again about that." He paused, then added with a teasing grin, "But in my defense, you could’ve ducked faster when Zucco threw the punch."
Marie scoffed, leaning further against the railing. "If you hadn’t broken in there, Zucco would’ve given me the information we needed to catch Maroni. Rookie mistake, Wayne."
Bruce leaned in slightly, his gaze steady on hers. "So, you think you could do my job better?"
"Better? Hell yeah," she said, tapping her chin as if seriously considering it. "Step one: stop with all the brooding. Step two: maybe ditch the cape. Little dramatic, don’t you think?"
Bruce chuckled. "The cape’s staying. It's fucking iconic."
Marie gave him a look, her eyes gleaming with mischief. "Iconic? Please. I'd pull it off better than you, no contest."
They laughed together, a sound that felt natural and easy. It had been so long since they'd just talked like this—no cases, no weight of the world pressing down on them. Just them. Bruce found himself smiling, more at the feeling of the moment than anything else.
Bruce glanced at her, his grin lingering. "You know what? You’d look sexy in the suit."
Marie raised an eyebrow, feigning shock. "Sexy? Now you’re just trying to charm me, Wayne."
He smirked, shrugging. "Just saying. Gotham wouldn’t stand a chance."
Marie shook her head, her grin wide. "You wouldn’t stand a chance."
For a moment, they both paused, realizing how good it felt to be laughing, teasing each other again. It was like slipping back into something comfortable, something real—something they’d both missed.
Bruce leaned back slightly, still watching her. "It’s nice, you know? Talking like this again."
Marie’s smile softened. "Yeah. It really is."
She shifted her weight against the rail before asking, “So, do you have any other guests to mingle with, or am I hogging your time?” Her gaze shifted away from him, a defensive wall rising as if she could distance herself from the truth swirling between them. The air thickened once more as she grew serious again.
Bruce leaned in closer, the sincerity in his voice dropping to a whisper. “Honestly? You’re the only one I want to be with tonight. Everyone else can wait.”
Her eyes narrowed, skepticism creeping into her expression. “Bruce…”
Seeing the opportunity, Bruce went for it, “Marie, I don’t want to just be partners again. I want more.”
Her expression hardened, the walls around her heart building higher. “Bruce, I don’t want to get caught up in this again. It’s complicated.”
“Complicated?” he echoed, stepping closer, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. “What about it is complicated? I’m in love with you, Marie.”
His confession hung heavy in the air, bold and raw. His resolve remained unwavering as he stood there, determined.
A lump formed in her throat as she searched his eyes for a hint of uncertainty, but all she found was honesty. “You can’t just throw that around. Do you have any idea how hard this has been for me?” Her voice trembled.
“Then say it back,” he urged gently, desperation flashing in his eyes. “If you don’t love me, I’ll back off. We can just be work partners, nothing more.”
The silence pressed down on them, thick and unyielding, as Bruce stood there, grappling with everything he wanted to say. His voice was quieter when he finally spoke, but there was an urgency to it, something raw.
Bruce’s voice was steady but raw, each word heavy. “You know, every damn time I’m out there—every time I’m in the line of fire—I think of you. You’re in my head, Marie. I don’t want to do any of this without you.”
Marie’s breath caught, her heartbeat quickening as the weight of his words settled over her. She swallowed, her eyes dropping for a second, her mind swirling with the memories they shared—the nights at the docks, the chaos at the Iceberg Lounge, that first kiss in the shadows of Wayne Manor. “Bruce, it’s not that simple. There’s so much at risk.”
His eyes flashed, and he took a step closer, voice rough with frustration. “You think I don’t get it? Every fucking night I leave that cave, I know what’s at stake. But you—” he broke off, jaw clenched, as he forced himself to take a breath, softening just a bit. “I need you.”
He didn’t break eye contact, and in that moment, there was nothing between them but truth.
The air between them was charged, heavy with everything unsaid. Her lips parted as if to answer, but the words tangled in her throat, caught in the push and pull of fear and longing. She didn’t move, didn’t breathe, just stared at him, her mind racing.
Bruce, almost instinctively, lifted his hand to her face, his fingers brushing her cheek with a tenderness that made her eyes flutter shut. His touch was warm, grounding her, silently urging her to speak. She leaned into his palm, a deep breath filling her lungs as she tried to gather the strength to say what needed to be said.
"I did," she whispered, the confession hanging between them like a fragile thread about to snap. "But I don’t anymore."
The words fell from her lips, each one cutting through him like a blade. Her hand reached up, gently but deliberately removing his from her face, breaking their connection. The absence of her warmth left him cold.
Bruce’s heart shattered at her words, the weight of her rejection hitting him harder than he’d anticipated. He fought the urge to flinch, his breath catching in his chest. For a moment, he just stared at her, hoping there was some misstep, some misunderstanding. But the cold finality in her eyes told him otherwise.
His hands flexed into fists at his sides, the raw edge of hurt palpable in his voice as he spoke, quieter than before, almost restrained. “Understood.”
The word barely made it out of his throat, but he couldn't trust himself to say anything more. His mind was spinning, thoughts racing between anger, sadness, and disbelief.
Without waiting for a response, he took a step back, distancing himself, the overwhelming sting of rejection like a punch to the gut.
"I'll see you in a few days," he said, his voice flatter now, deliberately formal, his gaze already shifting away. The vulnerability he'd shown moments ago was locked behind his defenses again, but it was shaky, and he knew it.
“To connect on the Red Lotus case,” he added, almost mechanically. Business as usual—at least, that’s what he was trying to convince himself. But inside, his heart was a mess of pain and confusion.
His body moved like it was on autopilot, turning away from her as the lump in his throat tightened. His hand shot up, running through his hair in frustration, as if the physical act could somehow scrub the hurt away.
He wanted to be angry, to shut down and walk away clean, but the sadness clung to him, weighing him down. He couldn’t be mad at her, not really—she had her reasons. But that didn’t make the heartbreak any easier to swallow.
As he took another step away, his voice cracked just slightly, betraying the control he was desperately holding onto. “Thanks for coming tonight.”
Those words were hollow, and he knew it. He wanted to say more, to ask why, to beg her to change her mind, to say she didn't mean it—but he couldn’t. He was Bruce Wayne, the one who always kept his cool, who never let the mask slip for too long. He couldn’t risk unraveling in front of her.
He kept walking, each step feeling heavier than the last. His heart pounded in his chest, a storm of emotions crashing against the walls he was so desperately trying to rebuild. He could feel the tears threatening to spill over but swallowed them down, his jaw tightening.
The night around him felt suffocating, and every fiber of him wanted to scream, to let out the frustration, the heartbreak. But all he could do was put one foot in front of the other and force himself away from her.
He heard Marie call after him, faintly, but he couldn’t bring himself to stop. Not now. Not when everything felt so raw and exposed. If he turned around, he wasn’t sure he’d be able to keep it together.
But then, like a lifeline, she yelled after him again, her voice more urgent. “Bruce—wait!”
His footsteps faltered, his whole body tense. He stopped in his tracks, fighting the urge to turn back, his heart thudding painfully in his chest.
And then, the words that nearly broke him all over again: “I love you.”
For a moment, he didn’t process it. It was everything he’d been longing to hear, but it felt so surreal, so sudden after everything that had just passed between them.
He spun slowly to face her, the shock rippling across his features. For a moment, all the emotions he had fought to bury surged back up, overwhelming him. And then he saw her—standing there against the railing, bathed in the soft glow of the moonlight, her figure tense but still.
The night air tousled her hair, and her eyes, wide and vulnerable, locked onto his. She was gripping the railing as if it were the only thing keeping her grounded, her knuckles white against the dark metal. Her lips trembled slightly, the weight of her confession sitting in the space between them.
“I... I love you,” she repeated, her voice unsteady but resolute. The rawness in her gaze mirrored the same emotion he'd shown earlier—exposed, fragile, but undeniably real.
Her chest rose and fell with shallow breaths, and her vulnerability struck him with the force of a tidal wave. For the first time, he truly saw her—open, terrified, and yet standing tall in that moment of truth.
The moonlight caught the sheen in her eyes, the slight quiver in her lower lip, but her words, though trembling, didn’t falter. They were full of conviction, and it hit him just how close he'd come to walking away from something that still held hope.
Bruce could barely process it. His mind was still swimming in the pain of rejection, but now there was hope—a light in the darkness. Slowly, he took a step toward her, like he was testing the ground beneath him, afraid that if he moved too quickly, the moment would shatter.
“I’ve loved you this whole time,” she continued, her voice catching.
Bruce blinked, his heart pounding in his chest, trying to catch up with everything that was happening.
Her admission was like a balm on the wound, slowly healing the raw edges of his heartbreak. As he stepped closer, the sadness that had weighed him down moments before began to lift, replaced by something fragile but real—hope.
His voice was barely audible as he said, “Then why did you say that you don’t?”
Marie took a shaky breath, her eyes glistening. “Because it’s easier to be mad at you than to face how much I care. How much I’ve always cared.” She felt her composure faltering, her vulnerability laying bare before him. “You’re Batman. You live in danger every single day. I can’t bear the thought of losing you to the darkness that surrounds you.”
Her breath caught as fear and longing wrestled for control. “And then I start thinking, what if we try again, and what if it doesn’t work out? What if we’re just two people caught in a cycle of pain and heartbreak?”
He swallowed hard, the words pressing at the back of his throat as he looked at her, standing there with her heart exposed. He took a deep breath, stepping toward her, his voice thick with emotion. “I know what’s at stake,” Bruce said, his voice low, the weight of his words lingering in the air. “I feel it every night I step out there.”
The silence returned, heavy and thick. Marie felt her walls crumbling, and she wrestled with the chaos of her feelings.
“You don’t understand,” she whispered, tears threatening to spill. “I don’t want to lose you. I can’t go through that again.”
“Then don’t lose me,” Bruce said, stepping closer again, his voice firm yet gentle. “I’m standing right here. I’m not going anywhere. Not without you.”
His hand twitched as if he wanted to reach for her, but he held back, the weight of the moment pressing him to hold onto whatever restraint he had left. “Say you love me again, and I’m not letting you go this time.”
Marie’s eyes softened, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips as she finally let herself speak the words that had been swirling in her chest for so long. “I love you.”
As soon as the words left her lips, he closed the distance between them in an instant, his expression shifting from longing to determination. He captured her lips in a fierce kiss, pinning her against the railing, the world around them dissolving into nothingness. All that remained was the two of them.
Their lips met in a rush of urgency and desire, a wild mingling of pent-up emotions that had been simmering for far too long. Marie melted into him, every worry and doubt dissipating as she surrendered to the moment, losing herself in the heat of their connection.
When Bruce finally broke the kiss, his forehead rested against hers, their breath mingling, heavy and uneven. His voice was barely a whisper, but it carried the weight of a promise. "Whatever happens, we’ll figure it out together. You don’t have to be scared anymore."
Marie’s heart pounded against her chest as she stared into his eyes. For the first time in a long time, the fear in her heart was eclipsed by something else—hope, love, and the undeniable pull between them.
Bruce kissed her again—this time with even more intensity, a fierce declaration of everything they’d been holding back. He pressed her harder against the rail, his lips moving against hers like a vow. It wasn’t gentle; it was urgent, desperate, as though he was claiming her, body and soul.
As the kiss deepened, their hands explored—his fingers tangled in her hair, while she traced the strong line of his jaw. They lost themselves in the moment, time slipping away until a soft creak shattered the intensity.
The door to the balcony swung open, and Alfred stood there, eyes wide with surprise. Realizing the scene before him, he quickly averted his gaze, the faintest smile creeping onto his face as he cleared his throat. “Master Wayne,” he began, his voice steady but tinged with amusement, “the Mayor of Gotham has arrived. He’s asking for you.”
Bruce sighed, reluctantly pulling back just enough to meet Marie’s gaze. The heat of their connection still lingered in the air, but he softened as he brushed his thumb across her cheek. “Tell him I’ll be right there, Alfred,” he replied, his voice gravelly, laced with unspent desire.
Alfred nodded, keeping his eyes respectfully averted as he discreetly retreated, closing the door behind him. The charged silence returned, thick with the promise of what was to come.
Bruce leaned in close, his lips brushing the shell of Marie’s ear as he growled low, his breath warm against her skin. “I’ll be back,” he promised, his voice laced with a mix of desire and vulnerability that made her toes curl. “Stay right here,” he murmured, the words carrying a darker undertone that sent a shiver down her spine.
He pressed one last, lingering kiss to her neck, savoring the warmth of her skin before reluctantly stepping away. Bruce ran a hand through his hair, smoothing it down, his fingers lingering for a moment as he tried to regain his composure and pull himself together.
He glanced back at Marie, his gaze softening for a heartbeat, before taking a deep breath and turning to head out to meet the Mayor, his steps heavy with the tension of leaving her behind.
The door clicked shut, leaving Marie alone, her mind spinning in the aftermath of the heated moment. She pressed her fingertips to her lips, still swollen from the force of his kiss, her pulse racing.
Her thoughts spiraled. She hadn’t meant for any of this to happen, not tonight. But being with Bruce felt so natural, so right, like coming home after being gone for far too long. The way he kissed her—fierce, unapologetic, and so full of emotion—it was everything she had feared but everything she needed.
She loved him.
She loved Bruce Wayne, and it wasn’t just the man he was underneath the mask. It wasn’t the mystery or the danger that clung to him. It was his strength, his vulnerability, the way he looked at her like she was the only thing that mattered in a world filled with chaos.
The thought of losing him terrified her, but the idea of not being with him was worse.
Marie shook her head, pacing the small, private balcony in small circles. Every time she told herself she needed to be rational, that she had to protect herself from heartbreak, the memory of his touch, the feel of his lips against hers, shattered that resolve.
She couldn’t deny it anymore. She was in love with Bruce, wholly and irrevocably, and no matter what danger lay ahead, she was ready to face it—with him.
Minutes passed, though they felt like hours, as Marie’s heart beat louder in her ears. The door suddenly opened, and Bruce stepped back in. The intense look from earlier returned, but now, a playful smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
Before Marie could even react, Bruce was standing in front of her, pulling her into his arms with a quiet intensity. He kissed her, hard and deep, as if he couldn’t wait another second. His hands gripped her waist, lifting her off the ground in one smooth motion, and the world around them seemed to disappear.
When they finally broke for air, Bruce’s forehead rested against hers, his breath coming fast. He looked at her, his eyes dark with something fierce. “I love you,” he said, his voice rough and raw. “I love you, and I swear to God, I’m not going anywhere now. Not for anything.”
She grinned, feeling the warmth of his words seep into her very core. "I love you too," she whispered, her voice tinged with both affection and disbelief that they had finally arrived at this moment.
Bruce kissed her again, softer this time, but just as intense. His lips moved against hers with a tenderness that made her heart swell, and he tightened his grip on her, cradling her like she was something precious.
Slowly, he carried her out of the room and down the hallway toward a stateroom.
They barely made it through the doorway before Bruce kicked the door shut behind them, pressing Marie against it as they continued kissing. His hands roamed her back, feeling the softness of her, while her fingers tangled in his hair, pulling him closer, wanting more of him, all of him.
“I’ve waited so long for this,” he murmured between kisses, his voice low and rough with desire. "I’ve wanted to be with you like this, to feel you like this…"
Marie’s heart raced as she kissed him back with equal passion, her breath catching at the intensity of it all. She had never felt so alive, so consumed by love and desire all at once.
The heat between them was overwhelming, but in the best possible way. Every kiss, every touch, was filled with unspoken promises, with the depth of emotion they had both been too scared to admit until now.
Bruce pulled her closer, his hands firm but gentle as he carried her further into the room, laying her down on the bed with careful precision. He gently lowered himself onto her, their bodies entwined. A sense of peace washed over them, a moment suspended in time.
She could feel the hard contours of his body pressing into her, the heat radiating off him igniting every nerve ending.
Their mouths met again, a fierce collision that spoke volumes. As they kissed, the longing that had built over months poured out of them, their desperation palpable in the way they clung to each other.
Bruce’s hands roamed along the curve of her back, his touch warm and possessive as he pulled her closer, their bodies fitting together like pieces of a long-lost puzzle. Her arms instinctively wrapped around his neck, fingers tangling in his hair, anchoring herself against him as if he were her only lifeline.
She could feel the strength in his muscles beneath her fingertips, the way he radiated warmth, and it made her heart race.
They lost themselves in each other, reveling in the heat, the urgency, and the overwhelming love that pulsed between them like a heartbeat—a reminder that they were meant to be, despite the chaos that surrounded them.
Unsure of how much time had passed, Bruce and Marie pulled away, their breaths mingling in the charged air. Reality began to seep back in, and the weight of the world slowly returned. Bruce’s eyes softened, still filled with emotion as he gently kissed her forehead.
“Hey,” he murmured, a hint of a smile creeping onto his lips. “We have ice cream waiting for us in the butler's kitchen.”
Marie chuckled softly, the remnants of their passion still lingering in the air, and nodded. “Ice cream sounds perfect right now.”
They walked hand in hand through the dimly lit hallways of the yacht, the sounds of the gala fading behind them. As they entered the butler's kitchen, a comforting scent of vanilla wafted through the air, mixing with the coolness of the space. Bruce opened the freezer and pulled out a container, his expression shifting to playful mischief.
“I have both of your favorites, chocolate fudge or classic vanilla. What are you feeling tonight?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Chocolate fudge, obviously,” she replied, grinning as she hopped up onto the counter, swinging her legs slightly.
As he scooped the ice cream into two bowls, the earlier intensity of their conversation lingered like a warm blanket around them. Marie watched him, her heart swelling at the sight of him in this light—vulnerable yet strong, a man she had long admired.
Bruce stepped in front of Marie, standing between her legs as she sat on the counter. He set the bowls of ice cream down beside her, his hands resting casually on the counter’s edge, close to her hips. His tall frame filled the small space, creating a sense of closeness between them. Marie, her legs gently swinging off the side of the counter, scooped a spoonful of ice cream, her lips curling into a soft smile.
The kitchen was quiet, the faint hum of the night outside surrounding them. Bruce’s gaze stayed on her face, noticing the way the dim light softened her features—the relaxed curve of her lips, the subtle warmth in her eyes. He hadn’t touched his ice cream yet, too caught up in the rare moment of peace between them, the closeness they rarely shared like this.
Marie absentmindedly brushed her fingers against his wrist as she took another bite, the gesture light but intimate, and the silence between them felt comfortable, as if they didn’t need words to fill the space.
“I was thinking,” Marie began playfully, “If you gave me some more time, I would’ve figured out you were Batmanon my own.”
Bruce raised an eyebrow, amused. “Oh really? And how exactly would you have figured that out?”
She leaned closer to him, a teasing grin on her lips. “I don’t know, maybe all the late nights and the brooding? Or the way you magically disappear whenever Gotham is in trouble. I mean, come on, it’s not rocket science.”
Bruce chuckled softly, shaking his head. “Okay, fair point.”
Bruce stepped closer, positioning himself between Marie’s legs as she sat on the kitchen counter. He placed the bowls of ice cream beside her and leaned in, his hands resting lightly on the counter by her hips. The small space between them felt intimate, the night’s quiet hum settling around them like a comforting blanket.
He hesitated for a moment before speaking, his voice low. "You know, I almost told you so many times. About Batman. About everything."
Marie paused mid-bite, her spoon hanging in the air as she looked at him. "You did?"
Bruce nodded, his expression serious. "That night at the docks... I thought I was going to die. I kept thinking, if something happened to me, I couldn't leave you in the dark. I didn't want you to never know."
Her eyes softened, understanding replacing the initial surprise. "You really thought you were going to die?"
Bruce exhaled slowly, his gaze intense. "Yeah. I had to consider it. And more than anything, I didn't want to go without you knowing the truth. Keeping it from you always felt... wrong."
Marie let his words settle, the tension in her shoulders easing slightly. She reached out, her fingers brushing his forearm. She wasn’t sure what to say, so she rubbed his arm slowly.
She took a long breath, her voice gentle yet filled with weight. “You know,” she said, breaking the quiet between them, “when you were bleeding out on the docks, and when I saw Alfred patching you up at your house… I haven’t felt that helpless since I was a kid, watching my dad die.”
Bruce’s gaze shifted, brow furrowing, wanting her to continue.
She looked away, caught in the memory. “When he got shot while working a case. I remember visiting him in the hospital after it happened. He was hooked up to all these machines, tubes everywhere, and I just stood there... frozen.”
She took a breath before going on, “I was a kid, but I knew what it meant. Seeing him so weak, lying there... I felt powerless. I didn’t want to leave, didn’t want to go home without him, but I had to. The fear of losing him, of walking out of that hospital without my dad, it was paralyzing.”
Marie paused, the silence heavy between them, before she looked up at Bruce, her eyes clouded with the memory. “And when I saw you... lying there at the docks, barely holding on... it was like being back in that hospital room. That same helpless feeling all over again. Except this time, I wasn’t a kid. When you pulled your mask up, and I saw that you were Bruce, my Bruce… I was watching the most important person in my life slip away. And I couldn’t do anything about it.”
She set her ice cream bowl aside, her entire focus on him now. The vulnerability in her voice made Bruce’s chest tighten.
He reached up, gently brushing a strand of hair from her face, his touch soft. “I never wanted to put you through something like that.” He whispered to her.
Her hand came up to meet his, resting his palm against her cheek. She closed her eyes at the warmth of his touch. “I’ve seen you take on so much. You were always this invincible figure to me, even when I didn’t know who was behind the mask.”
His thumb rubbed her cheek as she continued, “But that night... I realized you weren’t invincible. And it terrified me.” Her voice faltered, her eyes searching his for understanding. “I realized I could lose my work partner, and the man I love. It felt like the world was closing in. That’s why I ended things with you. I didn’t want to feel that pain again.”
Bruce’s thumb paused, his forehead almost touching hers. His voice was low, laced with emotion. “You don’t know how much I needed you, Marie. Every time I put on that suit, I thought I was protecting you by keeping you out of it. But the truth is, I don’t want to do this without you. I need you by my side—whether I’m wearing the mask or not.”
Her heart pounded at his words, the intensity of his honesty cutting through her. He cupped her face fully now, his thumbs brushing gently against her skin. “I’m not going anywhere, Marie. I swear. Whatever happens, I’ll be right here. We’ll face it all together. No more secrets. No more running.”
Marie’s breath hitched, her forehead leaning against his, their closeness grounding her. “Promise me,” she whispered, her voice almost breaking. “Promise me you won’t keep anything from me again.”
“I promise,” Bruce whispered back, his voice thick with emotion. “You and me—no matter what.”
Marie opened her eyes, her gaze unwavering but soft. “I love you, Bruce.”
A slow, tender smile spread across Bruce’s lips, his usual guarded demeanor melting away in her presence. He leaned in, his lips brushing hers with a gentleness that spoke of everything unsaid. “I love you too, Marie.”
Marie smiled, the weight on her chest lifting. “Here’s to no more secrets,” she said, her voice light yet filled with meaning.
Bruce chuckled softly, his thumb brushing across her lips before resting his hand on the counter beside her. “To no more secrets,” he echoed, his voice steady, a vow to her.
They clinked their ice cream bowls together, the simple gesture carrying the weight of everything they’d shared. It wasn’t just a toast—it was a new beginning. A promise that from now on, they’d face whatever came together, with no more lies, no more running.
DC's Absolute Universe Wave 1 Write-Up (Origins and Characters)
Now that I finally have the current three Absolute Universe books, I can now talk about them. Now, DC's Absolute Universe is essentially DC's answer to Marvel's current Ultimate Universe, although I wouldn't say that it was the first time DC did something like this. About 15 years ago, DC released the new imprint Earth One, a sort of late answer to Marvel's original Ultimate universe in how it reimagines and modernizes the origins of many DC heroes, like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and even the Teen Titans. Now despite being a new imprint of a new universe with these newer versions of the classic heroes, there never really was a crossover in this universe as they were all stand-alone stories. Apparently in an interview a couple of years ago with Grant Morrison, they expressed how a crossover in Earth One would happen eventually, but I'm not sure if that is still in production or if it was scrapped altogether. Even then, the similarities with the original Marvel Ultimate universe are there in not just making more modern origins and stories with their characters, but with how these stories served as inspirations for a lot of their respective movies. The Earth One Universe is still going, but with the irregular release schedules, I'm feeling that DC just scrapped the whole universe entirely and they never mentioned it again.
Now back on topic here, the Absolute Universe have currently released the first two issues of what I would call the "Wave 1" series of the universe, with the debut of the Absolute Trinity with Absolute Batman, Absolute Wonder Woman, and Absolute Superman. So, for this post I will be talking about the new origins of these characters as seen in their first and second issues, express my thoughts on them and these new versions of said characters and their cast. So, let's discuss these new origins about these versions of Bruce, Diana, and Kal-El (more on that later).
Spoilers ahead as I'm talking about the new Absolute Universe here.
Absolute Batman (Snyder/Dragotta): Now I'm sure that mostly everyone knows about the origins of Batman, right? Young rich Bruce Wayne lost his parents Thomas and Martha Wayne one night after leaving the theater by cutting through to Crime Alley and ended up being shot and killed by Joe Chill which traumatized poor Bruce and ended up becoming the Dark Knight we know today. Now for the Absolute origin, there's some key changes here. For one thing, the traumatic moment that changed young Bruce wasn't at night, but during the day and at the Gotham Zoo during a field trip with his teacher, who is actually Thomas Wayne, Bruce's father. During this trip, a shooter, who is confirmed to be Joe Chill in the second issue, comes in and starts killing people, including Thomas who moved Bruce all the students in his class to a bat enclosure to protect them. Unfortunately, one of the stray bullets that shot Thomas went through the wall holding the bat enclosure and hitting the glass in front of the bat exhibit, releasing all the bats and completely cover Bruce in one of the most haunting images comic pages I've ever read. Now there are other changes here too, with the first notable changer being that Bruce's mother, Martha, is still alive and has a close friendship with Jim Gordon, who is the mayor of Gotham City in this universe, following the incident. The other difference here being that the Waynes are not rich here, instead being a more middle-class family, which shows a more grounded approach to Batman here as it has Bruce pretty much work on the ground level of Gotham, with construction and waste management.
Now for Bruce himself, we all know about the pics of how huge Bruce is, and man he is buff, literally a brick wall of muscle, which provides a more intimidating impression to him when he steps out as Batman. Another thing to note is that his entire suit is essentially a huge utility belt alongside the actual utility belt: spikes on his back, forearm guards and blades, his bat ears are actually big batarangs to be thrown, even his huge bat emblem on his chest is a weapon as it's actually the blade to a freaking battle axe he wields. But my favorite part has to be the cape, which works like how bats would use their wings to walk as Bruce uses it to be on a higher position or just uses it to grab someone at a distance and throws them with strength and velocity. Bruce himself also seems to be a bit more brutal as although he doesn't kill any criminal he comes across, he will still injure them by breaking their bones or by cutting off their hand like in the first issue.
I also just like the supporting cast here and how they're integrated here. Alfred is now a mercenary hired by a mysterious client to observe the Party Animals, a criminal group that is terrorizing Gotham being led by Black Mask, and to kill Batman if he interferes. However, he is actually inspired by Bruce on his crusade on crime and actively wants to help him and sort of act like a mentor to him. This dynamic really does compare itself to the dynamic between Terry McGuiness and Bruce in Batman Beyond, with it being a young man who wants to stop crime due to a traumatic event that ended with the death of his father being trained by an older, sort of jaded individual who is more experienced in the field. Some of Batman's rogues from the main universe here being not villains, but instead Bruce's childhood friends: Waylon Jones (Killer Croc), Ozwald Cobblepot (The Penguin), Edward Nigma (The Riddler), Harvey Dent (Two Face), and Selina Kyle (Catwoman) who didn't show up until the last page of issue 2 and would play a role in the next issue. This is a really interesting view on them as a possible what if for if they just had a normal life, but I'm willing to say they might turn into villains in the continuing series possibly.
Absolute Wonder Woman (Thompson/Sherman): Now compared the Trinity, Wondy's origins are the least well-known, with her original origin and her New 52 origin. The original origin has Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons on Paradise Island, better known as Themyscira, wanted a daughter, so with the help of the Greek pantheon, Hippolyta created a clay figure of a baby, and the gods imbued their powers to said figure, creating Diana aka Wonder Woman. Years later, an Air Force pilot named Steve Trevor crash lands on the island and was found unconscious by Diana and decides to nurse him back to health, much to her mother's dismay. It was here that Steve tells Diana about the outside world where he hails from, which made Diana becomes curious about the World of Man. So, she decides to help Steve go back home and discover the outside world and all its curiosities. As for the New 52 origin, the main change here was that instead of being formed from clay, she is actually the biological daughter of Hippolyta and Zeus because well, its Zeus and he has sex with women all the time, but the rest is still the same.
In the Absolute Universe, it starts to be similar to the main comics, just with Circe, a sorceress and normally a WW villain in the main universe, seemingly about to make something with clay on the Wild Isle, an island located in Hell where Circe is held as a prisoner from the Greek gods. However, Apollo, the Greek god of the sun, arrives to the island in front of Circe telling her that she has a new prisoner to live with: baby Diana taken from the Amazons of Themyscira following a betrayal from them towards the gods and as a result, make the word "Amazon" to never be said again. Meaning that Circe is now stuck in Hell with a baby she doesn't care about. But as time goes on, Circe bonds with Diana and becomes a mother to her, teaching her spells and helping her find out who she actually is in such an emotional moment in the first issue. The origin follows back to the original as Steve Trevor washes ashore in Hell as Diana finds him unconscious and nurses him back to health with the help of Circe. Steve tells Diana about where he came from and helps him get back to the living world, the way they do it is not revealed yet in the story, but it is implied that it involved a resurrection spell of some sort.
As for Diana herself, she is sort of like her main appearance, but now has spells taught to her from Circe and some of her familiars, mainly her skeleton Pegasus who turns out to be the Pegasus of the original Greek myths. She also wields the Athena blade, which is a buster sword like Cloud has in FF7. Her most notable weapon here is her version of one of Wondy's iconic weapon, the Lasso of Truth. Now normally, the Lasso of Truth would wrap around an opponent and makes them tell the truth on what they've done and any sort of secrets they held. In the Absolute Universe, it's instead called Nemesis and in lieu of the original Lasso, it hurts the opponent based on how many sins they have committed, making it be a more painful experience for whoever is wrapped around it. Essentially, its similar to Ghost Rider's Penance Stare, just in lasso form. Diana herself is similar to how she in the main universe: compassionate yet stern when the situation drives her to but wants to spare life and not kill her enemies, even if they're demons.
For the supporting cast there's two notable characters: Circe and Steve. I guess there's also the Greek gods, but other than Apollo showing up in the first issue and some references from Diana in the story, they don't show up that much. Circe is Diana's adopted mother and helps her be the kind, strong, woman that she is, but is still stuck in Hell. I do have a fan theory that Circe could be the one that sent the demons to the surface world as a sort of revenge towards humanity and Diana for leaving Hell, but I'm probably leaning that she had to sacrifice herself to get both Diana and Steve to the surface world, but the rest of the first arc would reveal what happened to her now and how she was imprisoned to Hell in the first place. Steve is still the same in the main comics, a noble soldier that cares for Diana and helps her in the outside world. So not much else.
Absolute Superman (Aaron/Sandoval): Everyone and their grandmother knows about Superman, right? I not, here's a speedrun. Born on the doomed planet Krypton, Kal-El was sent in a rocket as a baby by his scientist birth parents to save him from the exploding planet, knowing there won't be a way to fix it. Kal crash lands in Smallville, Kansas on Earth, raised by the Kents as Clark Kent, Clark finds out who he actually is, Kents teach him all about right and wrong and to always help others, Clark develops superpowers and first becomes Superboy to understand his powers either by himself or from the help of the Legion of Superheroes depending on continuity. Clark moves to Metropolis after graduating, becomes reporter for the Daily Globe, meets and befriends Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, becomes Superman, fights bald millionaires, lightning women, parasitic monsters, evil toymakers, evil Kryptonians, aliens, fifth-dimensional beings, flaming skull people, and space biker. Later marries Lois, dies in a fight one time but then brought back because of course, and finally has a son. That was not as quick as I thought, but the main components are there.
In the Absolute Universe, Kal-El had a life on Krypton before he escaped to Earth; actually, having an actual childhood there. Another change is with his birth parents, now in the main continuity, they were both part of the Science Council of Krypton or at least Jor-El, Kal's father. However, in the AU, the El's are part of the working class of Krypton, a lower class in that society compared to the science council, who are the highest class in Kryptonian society. You know the emblem on Kal's chest that stands for the House of El in the main comics? Well, that emblem stands for the working class in this universe, making Kal feel closer to his Golden Age appearance. Another thing to note is the name: Kale-El is not Clark, well right now at least. It's not revealed yet in the story, but it is clear that he fled Krypton when he was either in his teen years or when he turned to a young adult. He may have crash landed through the Kent house as revealed in the epilogue of issue 1, but its unsure if he actually met the Kent's or if the encounter didn't end well. It's all still pretty much in the dark about this Kal's origins on Krypton, but his character is honestly really interesting here.
Kal-El is still like his main counterpart in how much he wants to help others, especially the oppressed. The writer of this series, Jason Aaron, said during an interview that this Superman will feel close to his original Golden Era role, helping those that are helpless from those that have higher power over them. In issues 1 and 2, Kal helps a mining village in Brazil from the overpowering company that owns the village, the Lazarus Corporation, by helping them get diamonds in the dangerous mines, heavily filled with asbestos. Kal also has two sides to him: a brave, helpful personality in public towards those he helps and a more shy, timid personality he has with himself, which in a way feels more relatable to me in wanting to help others but still feel nervous about how to do them. As for his powers, he actually gets them thanks to his suit. In the main series, Clark simply got his powers by absorbing yellow sunlight through his skin, which allows him flight, super speed, strength, durability, freeze breath, and x-ray and laser vision. In the AU, his suit has an AI named Sol that gives him these powers at the cost of the solar power the suit gains during the day. One interesting thing to note about the suit is with the cape. The cape is actually red sunstone dust that can be activated by the suit, and the cape itself is not just a shied to protect Kal and others but can also heal those that are injured. A very unique concept of how this Superman got his powers.
For the supporting cast, there's some interesting ones here. First there is Sol, who's main purpose is to protect Kal on Earth at all costs, which includes convincing Kal to not help humans and just retreat from attackers, which Kal very easily ignores. It'll be interesting to see how Sol was created by the El's and how they wanted Sol to protect their son. Next are the villains with the Peacemakers, who are a sort of police corps that work for Lazarus Corporation, and they are the mass oppressors that take over the mining village in Brazil. Their weapons are also really cool in how they change and adapt on who the target is, which is also really terrifying when they attack the innocent villagers. Other than a certain Peacemaker who is referred to as Smith, there's not much to them. Then there's the AI that works for Lazarus, simply known as Brainiac. He's still sort of the same as the main comics, an AI figure that is into researching certain things on Earth and life on other planets by shrinking them down and putting them in enclosures, as seen in the issue 1 epilogue, with his primary focus now being on Kal. People are theorizing that this Brainiac is also a fusion of Lex Luthor given the color scheme, it could be a chance that it is, but we haven't seen this universe's version of Lex just yet as he could be the head of Lazarus, or it could be someone else leading the corporation, most likely an Al Ghoul given the connection to Lazarus in the main comics. Finally, and certainly not the least, there's Lois. Now there is one key difference between the reporter of the Daily Bugle of the original universe and this one is that she's not a reporter, instead, she's one of Lazarus' soldiers sent to take down Superman, most likely going down this path thanks to her father Sam Lane, who is a general in the main comics. During the mission, she handcuffs herself to Kal in an attempt to subdue him but it's from this, that she gets an in-depth look to Kal and what he's doing. From this, she becomes more interested and wants to know more about him. After reporting about this to Brainiac which led to the program wanting to terminate Superman, much to Lois's displeasure, she decides to write about him herself in her reports, which she very much appreciates when she does, essentially making her close to her main counterpart.
So that's the Absolute Trinity for right now, all still the same despite the changes to their origins which could make or break to you, but I really love these stories, and I'm invested in these new versions and want to learn more about them. For my favorite, it has to be Absolute Batman, with WW and Superman being tied as 2nd, I do love the action and art in WW, but I love the characters in Superman. I slightly like Absolute Superman more than WW right now, but that could change with the next issues. I will be more in-depth when their first arcs are finished, so I'll write that in the future. Speaking of the future, there's three more Absolute series coming out next year: Absolute Flash by Jeff Lemiere, Absolute Green Lanter by Al Ewing, and Absolute Martian Manhunter by Denis Camp. Out of the three, I'm excited about AMM the most as John Johns is one of my favorite characters in DC and I'm absolutely loving Camp's work with the Ultimates in Marvel's current Ultimate Universe. The Absolute Universe is going off great and I want to see where this universe goes with Darkseid and his ultimate goal and when this universe clashes with the main DC universe.
[Image Description: A 9-panel colored Legend of Zelda AU comic “Linked Spirit”. The panels all fade into each other, with no rigid boxes around them. Panel 1: Hope's hand is shown passing the Cross to Briar's hand. Hero's Spirit is shown in the circular center of the Cross, eyes blank, and clothing closer to their body, not the ghostly look. Hope says "Behold! Our time-traveling Ghost!" Hero, shown on the side in Ghost form, eyes wide, says, "What? I'm not-" Briar interrupts, saying "Oh! I see... How did this happen?" The background fades in a teal flame-like look, Hero's scarf creating a line between the top panel and the rest. Panel 2: Hero, hylian and wearing a page's tunic, sits overlooking castle town's outline, next to Marin. Marin says "I want you to know... I'll always be here for you." Panel 3: Marin narrates "I know you've had it rough," Hero is shown hidden behind the corner of an alley, looking at a Knight nervously. They hold a piece of bread next to their mouth. Marin continues "That you fight everyday just to get enough food." Panel 4: "I know that taking this apprenticeship with the Knight Captain will give you a roof and food and money..." Marin says. She's shown behind Hero, arms crossed as she looks at them sadly. Hero looks determined, looking forward. Panel 5: "But I worry. You know?" Hero is shown in a fighting stance, sword raised forward, shield up. They have a few minor scratches. Marin continues "I just don't want you to get hurt." Panel 6: The background fades to a soft pink. Marin lo...oks at Hero while she sits next to them, holding their hand. "I want to keep you safe. For once, once, I want to see you safe." Panel 7: In another memory- Hero is shown putting a white bell-like flower in Marin's hair, surrounded by plants, Hero says "You already do... You're my best friend." Panel 8: Hero and Marin, back to present, sitting, hug. Hero says "But you have to trust me. I'll be okay." Only Marin's face is visible, her expression sad and worried. Panel 9: The background fades into a purplish clouded rain. Marin is in a deep purple hooded cloak, hugging Hero, who is in the classic green outfit. She holds a dagger, which is jabbed into Hero's back, mirroring a panel from the first page. Marin says "It's okay." End ID]
I'm reuploading one guide on making VHS effect more authentic I guess( I'm not gonna pretend I'm a specialist it's just when I was searching and studying it I noticed some people just apply channel effects or noises and overall pictures look like they're too fresh to be old looking) So first we need to understand how VHS works( I found this through videos on vhs and how nintendo 64 ported resident evil 2) VHS holders needed to save and hold a lot of information using metals that can't handle high resolution. In order to compress images VHS divides them into 2 groups: Tone(Black and White relation) and Chroma(color apply without tone channel type). These two channels are compressed to 1:16 of original resolution then changed into same size as original(by crop) but with less resolution. 1) Create new file in photoshop. Call it whatever you want just 'canvas1' can suffies. Sizes are: 640 px width 374(or any you want just in relation to classic 4:3 or 16:9) height AND printing resolution to 72 ppi. Create 3 other files with same application(canvas2 and canvas3 and canvas4) 2) In canvas2 we add screenshot(I used one I made in Hollow knight) now we're going to extract tone by using ctrl+U and change saturation to 0. Now we need to change image size and divide your width into 2 ( if we divide 640 into 2 we get 320 pixels width) height needs to stay the same so turn off button with proportional changes. After we compressed this file we call it 'tone' and save as jpg image. Now we need to add tone to canvas1 and transform it's width according to file size(don't change image size) this is layer1 now. 3) In canvas 3 we have same original screenshot but we need to apply different color profile in edit window(LAB colors) LAB colors consists of channels Light(this is our tone) and a b(these two makes chroma). We now need to open channel window and turn off Light(L) channel and we can see now e have pretty colors. I didn't find how to extract color from this profile so I made new screenshot of this file and add to canvas4(transformed it according to file size). 4)We can close canvas2 and canvas3. In canvas4 we need to change image size. We need to divide 640 into 16 we get = 40 pixels. Width are 40 pixels, height doesn't need to change. We can see now that this image looks squeeshed and that's right. This file we call 'chroma' and save as jpg. Then we need to add this image into canvas1 and transform it according to gile size without changing image size. This is layer2 now. 5)Change layer2 application from normal to color. If you want you can change oppacity to 65-75 %. Now we basically have broken vhs/low fidelity effect.(if you want you can add horro effect by changing layer mode to any instead of color)
BONUS ROUND: You can add some stuff through layer effect by copying finished image and turning off green and blue channel in it. Move this layer slightly to the left. Made another copy of og vhs image we had and turn off red and green move it slightly to the right. If you want to add logo made same thing with channels as we did previously and blur it a little.
ONE BED TROPE
(w/ Gwendoline Christie's Characters)
(A/N): literally wrote this for myself bcs I just can't with how hot and sweet this woman is, but I thought you guys might enjoy too! 🥹 literally Stan Gwen for a better life. Did not proof read, pls enjoy.
(also fls this image makes me just want to sin, mame)
Brienne of Tarth
-You're a princess and she's a knight.
-Classic trope.
-You were on a journey and your father, the king, sent his mightiest guard with you in your quest, whatever it may be.
-All that good shit.
-So, one day in your seemingly endless travels with Brienne, you were bound to encounter the following scenario:
-"I profusely apologize, m'lady, but there seems to be only one more room available in the inn. And it only has one bed."
-I mean, it wasn't like you had the hugest fucking crush on this gorgeous-ass fucking woman next to you--
-Right???
-FUCKING WRONG!
-So you arrive at the room and the bed was quite spacious, seemingly a bed for... Couples.
-But your internal screaming was ceased when your amazing (mountain) of a knight offered to sleep on the floor. And of course, you couldn't let her do that!
-NO.
-"Oh, it's absolutely fine, Brienne. I insist."
-"B-but m'lady--"
-'JUST CLIMB IN THE FUCKING BED ALREADY SO I CAN CLIMB YOU, DAMN IT!'
-"It's fine, Brienne. I could use the company."
-*insert internal dying pt. 2*
-You trying not to stare while she takes off her armor was a successful, yet gruesome process.
-Facing away from her in bed because you might just freeze to death if you accidentally met her icy-blue eyes.
-"(Y/N). I understand that you are not comfortable with our predicament. Cease the civilities and let me sleep on the floor, please."
- >:0
-'HOW DARE YOU IMPLY THAT I, FOR ONE SECOND IN MY LIFE, NEVER WANT TO BE NEXT TO YOU?!'
-"Brienne, I-- listen, it's not you that I am uncomfortable with. Well... It is you. But--"
-She let out a quiet sigh as she had started to stand, but you, frustrated and quite tired of the bullshit, grabbed her arm and caused you two to come face to face.
-This slightly took her a back, but she kept her usual composure, propping you up as you still held on tightly on to her arm.
-"Lady (L/N), what on earth are you doing?"
-"I'm not letting you leave. By god, you are as slow as you are gorgeous."
-"I don't understand, m'lady."
-"Brienne, I do wish for your company. Not just this evening, but the evenings ever since I've met you and the evenings in the many moons to come."
-*exe.brienne has stopped working*
-"I understand that I may have been a little too aggressive. But my offer still stands the same. You can have the bed. It's the least I could do for the bravest knight of Tarth."
-"(Y/N)... Are you true?"
-"With every word that I have given you. By the old gods and the new, Brienne. I mean it."
-You saw the spark in her eyes, a spark of hope and maybe... Love? So, you continued.
-"I meant every compliment I have given you, every thanks, every laugh and each of those chaste kisses on your cheek when I tend to your wounds that I wish could be longer. They're all true. I mean it when I say that my bed shall always be yours. And I'll mean it everytime that I tell you how much I love you, my Brienne."
-"I love you too, (Y/N). I always have. I'll always be by your side. I shall protect you and offer my life to you, my (Y/N). Know that in my dying breath, the memories of your smile shall put me into the deep slumber with joy."
-You cried because, whew! Did you guys just get married?
-"Let us sleep then. As I await every tomorrow that I'll spend with you."
-Move over, Will Shaxbeard!
-You woke up with Brienne holding you close and you the same. You knew instantly that that is how you wanted to spend the rest of your eternity.
Lucifer Morningstar
-Little less pure than Brienne.
-So, Lucifer abandoned their post, went down to earth and met you.
-You we're a psychic.
-Supposedly.
-Well, kind of.
-It didn't matter, because Lucifer seemed to think so, so they dragged you along to fulfill their great escape of their father's plan.
-You really did not believe them, but hey, they've got money.
-You we're visiting a demon in Las Vegas.
-Suffice to say that you've seen quite the shit that day and just wanted to get some rest. And probably a beer or two before travelling of to the dreaming.
-Lucifer didn't really like sleeping, and they usually just... Do things while you're asleep.
-They're a very busy person.
-In your slumber, you'd sometimes awaken to the Morningstar cursing under their breath, contemplating their life.
-It was a strange ass mid-life crisis.
-Besides being the Devil, you had to say that they were quite charming. Polite, infact.
-They never bothered you unless they needed to.
-No one ever saw them in their raw form of vulnerability, except you.
-Or atleast, no one ever survived to tell the tale.
-Well, that night in Vegas, you've drank MORE than a beer or two.
-Lucifer said that alcohol never really worked on them. It's a celestial being thing, you wouldn't get it.
-"Well why don't you just get some rest then, angel?"
-That nickname irritated them to no extent.
-"I told you (Y/N), I don't sleep."
-"Like... You can't? Or you just don't wanna?"
-"I--"
-*annoyed Lucy activated*
-Usually, you'd back off. But in this case, you had no control and you were face to face with the Devil, for Christ's sake. Of course you were curious.
-"You...?"
-They looked at you incredulously.
-"(Y/N), just go to bed, angel."
-They did not just say that.
-You burst out laughing. Does the devil have blood? No. Can you see clearly? Absolutely not. But are they absolutely blushing like a tomato? Yes.
-They marched to the side of your bed, demanding you to shut the fuck up but to no avail.
-Going as far as to straddle you and attempted to choke you, out of their childish frustration.
-Part of them knew they couldn't kill you as you were still an evident part of the prophecy.
-But, God they wanted you to shut up so bad.
-It's an itch that grew unbearably annoying to them, to listen to you laugh. And now, especially, that you were laughing at their misfortune.
-"(Y/N), SILENCE!"
-When you realized the position that the two of you were in, you suddenly quieted down.
-Samael was the most beautiful angel in the heavens, and still retained their features even after their fall from grace.
-As the dim yellow light shone a faux halo above them, it was bitter irony.
-Your angel.
-You pulled Lucifer down next to you, then almost successfully straddling them in the same manner they did.
-"You look so beautiful, my angel."
-You couldn't remember what happened next but when you woke up, you were on top of Lucifer, head resting on their chest.
-They were wearing their own silk pajamas and you found it adorable.
-"Good morning, my angel."
-They decided that they liked that nickname better.
Larrisa Weems
-You were a fellow teacher.
-Well, you liked thinking that you were.
-You were just an intern, or as most people like calling you, Ms. Weems' assistance.
-It didn't really bother you as much.
-It meant that you got to spend more time with the Head Mistress, who to be completely honest, you were absolutely smitten with.
-You slept in your own chambers, of course.
-But one day, something completely unfortunate happened.
-A fur just happened to burst into your room while they were morphed, through the windows.
-You were sleeping at the time, but luckily, you only had a few cuts from the window shards, thanks to your duvet.
-Larissa, being the headmaster, had to take care of the whole debacle.
-She dragged you inside her chambers and started patching up your arms and the few stray cuts littered across your face.
-Larissa did look sorta pissed, while doing so.
-"Ms. Weems, I understand that I'm intruding. I can stay with Mr. Ramirez tonight and I can patch myself up, if it's troubling you."
-You offered, as Mr. Ramirez, or Gary, as you knew him, was a friend of yours before getting into the academy. And before Principal Weems, it was him who you spent most of your time with.
-"Wouldn't Gary be fast asleep by now, (Y/N)? Although, it is you. I doubt he would refuse his own girlfriend, no?"
-Girlfriend?
-"Oh, am I imposing? Forgive me. I just see the both of you lovebirds hanging around, couldn't help but notice." she hummed.
-"Ms. Weems--"
-"Larissa, please, darling."
-Ignoring the butterflies dancing in your stomach, you responded.
-"Yes, Larissa. Gary and I are just friends."
-"Oh..."
-Her expression was unreadable, and so was her tone.
-"I suppose you haven't set your eyes on any of our staff, then?"
-"Actually, I have..."
-You let out a small wince as Larissa pressed the cotton ball a little too roughly on a wound.
-"Sorry, sorry."
-Soon after she was finished bandaging up your cuts, she offered to walk you to Gary's room.
-But then you heard loud snoring and after a few more countless attempts to call the man, you gave up.
-"(Y/N), this is getting a tad ridiculous. I wouldn't mind you spending a night in my chambers instead."
-Ignoring the underlying meaning that the statement had, and you wished she meant, you agreed.
-The walk back to her chambers was a quiet one.
-"Thank you, M-- Larissa. Goodnight."
-Without thinking, you placed a soft kiss to her cheek.
-Larissa was left dumbfounded, while sleepiness visited you as soon as your head found the pillow.
-"Goodnight then, (Y/N)."
-She reminded herself to ask you in the morning on who was the staff member you liked.
-Waking up was a surprise, as you found that Larissa's hand had snaked it's way to your waist, while you had your hand on top of hers, keeping in in place.
-That's how Enid pays her 'Thing' Massages.
On Writing Theme (Or, Make it a Question)
An element of story so superficially understood and yet is the backbone of what your work is trying to say. Theme is my favorite element to design and implement and the easiest way to do that? Make it a question.
A solid theme takes an okay action movie and propels it into blockbuster infamy, like Curse of the Black Pearl. It turns yet another Batman adaptation into an endlessly rewatchable masterpiece, seeing the same characters reinvented yet again and still seeing something new, in The Dark Knight. It’s the spiraling drain at the bottom of classic tragedies, pulling its characters inevitably down to their dooms, like in The Great Gatsby.
Theme is more than just “dark and light” or “good and evil”. Those are elements that your story explores, but your theme is what your story *says* with those elements.
For example: Star Wars takes “dark vs light” incredibly literally (ignoring the Sequels). Dark vs Light is what the movies pit against each other. How the selfish, corrupted, short-sighted nature of the Dark Side inevitably leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy of doom—that’s what the story is about.
A story can have more than one theme, more than one statement it wants to make and more than one question to answer. Star Wars is also about the inevitable triumph of unity and ‘goodness’ over division and ‘evil’.
Part of why I love fantasy is how allegorical it can be. Yes I’m writing a story with vampires, but my questions to my characters are, “What makes a monster? Why is it a monster?” My characters’ arcs are the answer to my theme question.
Black Pearl is a movie that dabbles in the dichotomy between law-abiding soldiers and citizens, and the lawless pirates who elude them. Black Pearl’s theme is that one can be a pirate and also a good man, and that neither side is perfect or mutually exclusive, and that strictly adhering to either extreme will lead you to tragedy.
Implementing your theme means, in my opinion, staging your theme like a question and answering it with as many characters and plot beats as possible. In practice?
Q: Can a pirate be a good man? A: Jack is. Will is. Elizabeth is. Barbossa is selfish and short-sighted, and he loses. Norrington is too focused on propriety and selfless duty, and he loses.
Or, in Gatsby.
Q: Is life fulfilled by living in the past? A: Mr. Buchanan clings to his old-money ways and is a sour lout with no respect for anyone or himself. Daisy clings to a marriage that failed long ago, to retain an image and security she thinks she needs. Myrtle chases a man she can’t ever have. Her husband lusts after a wife who’s no longer his. Gatsby… well we all know what happens to him.
The more characters and plot beats you have to answer your theme’s question, the more cohesive a message you’ll send. It can be a statment the story backs up as well, as seen below, questions just naturally invite answers.
—
Do you need a theme?
Not technically, no. Plenty of stories get by on their other solid elements and leave the audience to draw their own conclusions and take their own meaning and messages. Your average romance novel probably isn’t written with a moral. Neither are your 80s/90s action thrillers. Neither are many horror movies. Theme is usually reserved for dramas, and usually in dramatic fantasy and sci-fi, where the setting tends to be an allegory for whatever message the author is trying to send. That, and kids movies.
Sometimes you just want to tell a funny story and you don’t set out with any goals of espousing morals and lessons you want your readers to learn and that is perfectly okay. I still think saying *something* will make the funny funnier or the drama more dramatic or the romance more romantic, but that’s just me and what I like to read.
When it is there, it’s right in front of your face way more often than you might think. Here’s some direct quotes succinctly capturing the main theses of a couple famous works:
“He’s a good man.” / “No, he’s a pirate.” - Curse of the Black Pearl
“What are we holding onto, Sam?” / “That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it’s worth fighting for.” - LotR, Two Towers
“Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.” - LotR, Fellowship of the Ring
“A person’s a person, no matter how small.” - Horton Hears a Who
“You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” - The Dark Knight
“Can’t repeat the past? Why of course you can!” - The Great Gatsby
“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.” & “Life finds a way.” - Jurassic Park
"Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind." - Lilo & Stitch
“But… I’m supposed to be beautiful.” / “You are beautiful.” - Shrek
“I didn’t kill him because he looked as scared as I was. I looked at him, and I saw myself.” - How to Train Your Dragon
“There are no accidents.” & “There is no secret ingredient.” & “You might wish for an apple or an orange, but you will get a peach.” - Kung Fu Panda
*If any of those are wrong, I did them entirely from memory, sue me.
Some of the best scenes in these stories are where the theme synthesizes in direct dialogue. There’s this moment of catharsis where you, the audience, knew what the story has been saying, but now you get to hear it put into words.
Or, these are the lines that stick in your head as you watch the tragedy unfold around the characters and all they didn’t learn when they had the chance.
When it comes to stories that have a very strong moral and never feel like they’re preaching to you, look no further than classic Pixar movies.
“Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere.” - Ratatouille
“I’m not strong enough.” / “If we work together, you don’t have to be.” - The Incredibles
“Just keep swimming!” - Finding Nemo
Ellie’s adventure book, to live your own adventure, even if it’s not the one you thought it would be - Up
The Wheel Well montage, to slow down every once in a while, because in a flash, it’ll be gone - Cars
The entire first dialogue-less section of Wall-E, to stop our endless consumption or else
The real monsters are corporate consumption - Monsters Inc
One cannot fully appreciate happiness without a little sadness - Inside Out
With enough loud voices, the common man can overthrow The Man - A Bug’s Life
A person’s worth is not determined by their value to other people - Toy Story
These are the themes that I, personally, took from these movies as a kid and later in life. If I remembered the scripts any better I could probably pull some direct dialogue to support them, but, sadly, I do not have the entire Pixar catalog memorized.
—
After you’ve suffered through rigorous literary analysis classes for years on end, the “lit analyst” hat kind of never comes off. Sometimes you try to find a theme where none exists, coming up with your own. Sometimes you can very easily see the skeleton attempt at having a theme and a message that came out half-baked, and all the missed opportunities to polish it.
Whatever the case, while theme isn’t *necessary*, having that through line, an axis around which your entire story revolves, can be a fantastic way to examine which elements of your WIP aren’t meshing with the rest, why a character is or isn’t clicking, how you want to end it, or, even, how you want to approach a sequel.
Unfortunately, very, very often, a movie, book, or season of TV has a fantastic execution of a theme in its first run, and the ensuing sequels forget all about it.
No one here is going to defend Michael Bay’s Transformers movies as cinematic masterpieces, however, the first movie did actually have a thematic through line: “No sacrifice, no victory.” They didn’t stick the landing but, you know, the attempt was made. Where is that theme at all in the sequels? Nonexistent. They could have even explored a different theme and they abandoned it altogether.
Black Pearl’s thematic efforts fell away to lore and worldbuilding in its two sequels. Not that they’re bad! I love Dead Man’s Chest, but to those who don’t like the sequels, that missing element may be part of why.
Shrek and Shrek 2 both centered on their theme of beauty being how you define it and no one else. Fiona finds true love in her “true” form, then strengthens that message in the sequel when she has the chance to be “normal” and conventionally attractive, and still chooses to be an ogre, to be with Shrek. Shrek 3’s theme is…?
When it was never there, that theme is missing isn’t so obvious. When it used to be there and got left behind, it leaves a crater in its wake everyone notices, even if they can’t pinpoint why.
—
TLDR: Theme is more than just vague nouns and dichotomies. Good, evil, dark, light, selfishness, altruism, beauty, ugliness, riches, poverty, etc are what your story uses. Your theme is what your story has to say with those elements, using as many characters and plot points as possible to reinforce its message. Is it necessary? No. Is it helpful and does it lead to a richer experience? Yes.
