Hogwarts Robes
In my quest to design the world of Harry Potter, I created a new design for Hogwarts Robes (it's based on my older design, just revamped). So, the idea is modeled here on an old Harry sketch:
The concept is that these robes could be worn over any shirt with the collar up, and that's how everyone would wear them in the opening feast, for example (the two options on the right). And they can be worn with the collar open with a shirt and tie beneath. With a little button to hold the collar in place (the two options on the left). The buttons & belt buckle are gold for Gryffindor, but each house would have a different color (Silver for Slytherin, bronze for Ravenclaw, and black for Hufflepuff)
The lower layer is the black work robe, and during classes like Herbology or Potions (or when it's hot outside), they'll forgo the overrobe/outer robe.
The robes are unisex (although the girls' version tends to be a bit longer) and can be worn with any shoes & trousers situation beneath to allow everything we know about their school robes to make sense. As shown above on Harry, and on Ron, Hermione sketches here:
*The house logos are taken from Hogwarts Legacy cause I got lazy about that

Unlocked Elder Air Elemental - CR11 Elemental
A Pathfinder Unlocked version of the Elder Air Elemental.
Artwork by Sally Gottschalk on sallygottschalk.com, copyright Paizo.
This is the last of the four elder elementals from the original Bestiary I book that I added to my Unlocked Monster series - monsters that I tried to redesign to be more interesting, interactive, and fun to fight.
All of the elder elementals in Bestiary I just have super-inflated stats to make up for having practically no abilities. This version has what I hope are more interesting defensive strategies than the official version, using its aura rather than hit points and DR to prevent attacks.
A side-effect of lowering this creature’s stats to account for having its special abilities is that it’s now technically weaker than the Greater Air Elemental in certain ways. That’s true for all four of my Unlocked Monster versions of the elder elementals. However, I don’t actually think that it needs to have higher stats than the Greater Air Elemental in every single respect. I think that’s kind of a boring design, in fact. I consider the lower DR, AC, Strength, and fly speed to be a feature, not a bug - I like the idea that there are some elementals that are just physical powerhouses and others that have cool abilities instead.
This creature is adept at moving away from enemies, keeping those enemies from approaching, and launching attacks at them from afar. Its ranged attacks aren’t strong for its CR, but they should be its main strategy.
If the PC party has non-flying Small-sized (or smaller) creatures, don’t neglect the option of directing the wind upwards, causing them to get launched up into the air and then take falling damage.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Air Blows (Ex) As a standard action, an elder air elemental can make 2 natural ranged attacks against creatures within 60 feet. Â On a successful hit, a target takes 2d8 bludgeoning damage and the elder air elemental can make a free ranged bull rush attempt.
This attack is not penalized in areas of wind created by the elder air elemental.
Air Mastery (Ex) Airborne creatures take a –1 penalty on attack and damage rolls against an air elemental.
Place Wind Control Aura (Su) As a move action, an elder air elemental can shift its wind control aura to be centered on a location within 60 ft. instead of being centered on itself. It can do this for a number of rounds per day equal to its Strength bonus (usually 5 rounds). It can end this effect as a free action, returning its aura to itself.
Wind Control Aura (Su) An elder air elemental is constantly surrounded by a 30 foot aura of wind that counts as strong wind.  Ranged attacks within this area have a -2 penalty (other than rays and evocation effects), and Tiny or smaller creatures are unable to move forward against the force of the wind unless they succeed at a DC 10 Strength check (on the ground) or a DC 20 Fly check if airborne.
As a free action, an elder air elemental can alter the direction of the wind within its wind control aura, causing it to blow towards the center of the aura, away from the center of the aura, or in any specific direction it chooses.
Three times per day as a swift action, an elder air elemental can increase the strength of the wind within its aura to windstorm level for 1 round. Ranged attacks within this area are impossible except with siege weapons, which have a -4 penalty, and rays and evocation effects, which are unaffected. Medium or smaller creatures are unable to move forward against the force of the wind unless they succeed at a DC 10 Strength check (on the ground) or a DC 20 Fly check if airborne. At the end of the elder air elemental’s turn, or when entering the aura, Small or smaller creatures on the ground are knocked prone, roll 1d4×10 feet, and take 2d6 points of nonlethal damage, unless they succeed on a DC 15 Strength check. Small or smaller flying creatures are instead blown back 2d6×10 feet and take 2d6 points of nonlethal damage due to battering and buffeting, unless they succeed at a DC 25 Fly check. Additionally, all creatures within an area of windstorm level wind take a -8 penalty on Fly checks, sound-based Perception checks, and other skill checks that would be adversely affected by wind.
At the end of this 1 round of increased wind strength, an elder air elemental’s wind control aura is suppressed for 1 round, and it cannot increase the strength of the wind again for another round after that.

Royal Aircraft Factory SE5a 'F904' (G-EBIA) by Alan Wilson Via Flickr: Owned and operated by the Shuttleworth Collection. c/n 41H/81902. Seen at Old Warden during the 2013 Autumn Airshow. 06-10-2013 The details below are from the Shuttleworth Collection website:- The SE5 fighter was designed by H P Folland at the Royal Aircraft Factory and became the most celebrated aeroplane to emerge from those workshops. A total of 5,205 was built including a number of two seat trainers. Unlike many contemporary rotary engined Sopwith and Nieuport fighters which were sensitive and tricky to handle, the SE5 was designed around a Hispano-Suiza V-8 and intended to be relatively stable and easy to fly for the sketchily trained pilots of the period. A further advantage of this engine was that it had a reduction gear drive allowing the use of a hollow propeller shaft. Through this a fixed gun could fire without the need for synchronisation gear which the Allies had not yet perfected, though by the time the second prototype was ready in November 1916 reliable synchronisation was available so improved armament was fitted. Despite criticism of the high seating position and extra large glasshouse windscreen (both fitted with the intention of improving the pilots lot), weakness of the original steel tube undercarriage legs and certain aspects of the handling, the basic design was very promising in service. Accordingly after about the 50th machine these criticisms were addressed and a more powerful version of the engine was fitted, resulting in redesignation as the SE5a. Unfortunately expected supplies of the French engine were seriously delayed and then initially proved unreliable. A replacement direct drive version built under licence by Wolseley was plagued with teething problems, causing a serious delay in getting SEs to the RFC, but gradually the problems were resolved and the aeroplane became one of the most successful and popular fighters of the war. The SE5a entered service with the Royal Flying Corps in June 1917 with squadrons based at the front line in France and in England for home defence. Other squadrons served in Egypt, Palestine and Mesopotamia. By the close of WWI the newly formed Royal Air Force had 16 operational squadrons of SE5as at its disposal but within a year all the aircraft had been withdrawn from service use. This aeroplane 'F904' never saw service use and was purchased new after the war by Major J C Savage for his skywriting business and registered G-EBIA. It was rediscovered suspended from the roof of the Armstrong Whitworth flight shed at Whitley in 1955, was restored for the Collection by staff and apprentices at RAE Farnborough and flew again in August 1959. After mechanical problems with the original geared Hispano-Suiza it was re-engined with a 200 hp Wolseley Viper engine in 1975. In 1987 this replacement unit had to be extensively rebuilt and the aircraft flew again in 1991.

Porsche Classic Builds Classic 911 Using Genuine Parts
Porsche Classic has built a highly desirable collector’s item: the last 911 Turbo with an air-cooled engine - 20 years after the end of series production. The design of the 993-generation 911 Turbo is based on an original bodyshell, and the vehicle’s appearance is just as unique as its history.
Painted in Golden Yellow Metallic, it references the 2018 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series. The black wheels are highlighted by Golden Yellow design accents, while the seats and interior trim are finished in black with Golden Yellow details. The bodyshell features the characteristic side air intakes of the 993 Turbo S that were also available as an option for the regular 911 Turbo in 1998. Developing 450 horsepower, the classic sports car will celebrate its world premiere at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion in Laguna Seca (USA) on September 27, 2018. The collector’s item, which is limited to use on private tracks, will then be auctioned off by RM Sotheby’s at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta on October 27, 2018. The proceeds will be donated to the Ferry Porsche Foundation, a non-profit organization established this year to mark the “70 years of Porsche sports cars” celebrations.
“Project Gold” showcases the comprehensive skill of Porsche Classic in fascinating fashion”, says Detlev von Platen, Member of the Executive Board responsible for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG. “This project clearly demonstrates our strategic approach. Although we are starting a new chapter in our sports car history with the Porsche Taycan, the story of how the company evolved is no less significant. On the contrary, this Golden Yellow 993 demonstrates how incredibly passionate we are about the tradition of our brand.”
“Project Gold” represents Porsche Classic’s spectacular contribution to the “70 years of Porsche sports cars” celebrations: With this anniversary in mind as well as the forthcoming market launch of the Taycan as the first purely electric Porsche sports car, the experts at Porsche Classic came up with the idea of constructing a completely new vehicle based on an existing genuine type 993 bodyshell, showcasing both tradition and innovation. The experts were able to rely on a selection of over 6,500 genuine parts that Porsche Classic offers exclusively for 993 generation models. Overall, the Classic division currently stocks some 52,000 parts, which can be sourced via Porsche Classic Partners and Porsche Centers around the globe to repair and restore classic Porsche cars.
Construction of the unique vehicle took approximately one and a half years. The bodyshell was first put through the corrosion protection and painting process applied to today’s series-production vehicles. The collector’s item was then assembled and tuned by Porsche Classic specialists at the Porsche restoration workshop in Stuttgart. A brand new 3.6-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine developing 450 hp was installed, delivering the performance the vehicle originally had when it was in production. The manual transmission and all-wheel drive were also sourced from the Porsche Classic range of genuine parts. The hand-stamped chassis number follows the last series-production model of the 993 Turbo which rolled off the production line in 1998.
The exterior and interior elements were coordinated with the workshop’s dedicated Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur experts who were responsible for creating the 2018 911 Turbo S Exclusive series, which was limited to 500 units worldwide. To complement these elements, the designers at Style Porsche worked on the color gradients and positioning of badges as well as other interior details.
The 993 remains a sought-after collector’s item to this day, and is considered a particularly sophisticated and reliable vehicle. It was the first 911 to feature a redesigned aluminium chassis, giving it exceptional agility at the time. The 911 Turbo version of the 993 was also the first to have a twin-turbo engine, making it the lowest-emission standard automotive powertrain in the world in 1995. The front section is lower-slung than on the earlier 911 models, thanks to a switch from round to poly ellipsoidal headlights. Hollow-spoke aluminum wheels, a first for any car with aluminum wheels, were another innovation of the all-wheel drive 911 Turbo version. Only 345 units of the 911 Turbo S with its 450-hp performance-enhanced engine were built.

2020 Range Rover Evoque First Edition P250 First Test: Can Lightning Strike Twice?
The first-generation Evoque not only democratized a brand once almost exclusively defined by its associations with royalty and the rich, but also made it OK to drive a Range Rover that never put a wheel off the road. The Evoque’s high-style sheetmetal was designed to nudge the brand away from a relentless focus on off-road capability and toward a flirtation with fashion. And it worked: With about 800,000 sold since 2011, the original Evoque became by far the most successful vehicle ever from the automaker that created the luxury SUV genre. The redesigned 2020 Range Rover Evoque has big shoes to fill.
The second-generation Evoque’s exterior is a smoother, sleeker, more reductive take on the original’s pert proportions. And the coolly minimalist interior looks and feels much more haute couture, unambiguously sharing both design cues and technologies with bigger, more expensive Range Rovers. The 2020 Evoque is also the first to use JLR’s Premium Transverse Architecture (PTA), a mixed-metal platform constructed of regular and high-strength steel, aluminum, and magnesium that’s been designed to package 48-volt mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
The wheelbase is 0.8 inch longer, but shorter overhangs mean the overall length is unchanged. The MacPherson strut front suspension is attached to a die-cast aluminum subframe and features hollow cast front knuckles and fluid-filled bushings to reduce high-speed vibration. At the rear is a multilink suspension shared with the bigger Velar. More compact and sophisticated than the current Evoque’s setup, it has allowed the rear load area to grow by 6 percent—big enough to hold two golf bags—while improving ride and reducing transmitted road noise.
On paper, JLR has ticked all the boxes. On the road, however, the new Evoque doesn’t quite deliver on expectations. The 2020 Evoque First Edition P250 is a case in point.
“First Edition” denotes a marketing package that brings together features and equipment JLR expects many early adopters will order. In the case of the 2020 Evoque, that means privacy glass, LED headlights, 20-inch alloy wheels with a sparkling diamond turned finish, and a panoramic roof with contrasting black paint. Inside are 14-way heated front seats with memory trimmed in black and gray leather, plus an electrically adjustable steering column and Meridian audio system. All for $57,845.
You’d have to spend just over $60,000 to get a top-of-the-range Evoque R-Dynamic HSE with the same hardware. A good deal, then? Not exactly.
The First Edition P250 is, for all intents and purposes, an R-Dynamic HSE with one important difference: That P250 badge means it’s powered by the 248-hp, 269-lb-ft version of JLR’s 2.0-liter Ingenium turbo-four. All other R-Dynamic Evoques, even the entry-level S, which is priced from $47,595 and has the same copper-accented body kit as the First Edition, are P300s, powered by the 48-volt mild hybrid variant of the same engine that pumps out 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.
The P250 powerplant doesn’t endow the 4,300-pound First Edition with stellar performance. Although it revs happily enough to 6,500 rpm, throttle response below 2,500 rpm is slightly doughy, which means you have to keep it spinning for optimum response, especially in fast-moving freeway traffic. On a winding two-lane, you’ll need the shifter flicked into Sport mode and will have to fan the paddles to keep the Evoque hustling along.
Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph took 9.0 seconds in our testing, with the quarter mile covered in 16.8 seconds at 81.3 mph. That’s performance about on par with, er … a Subaru Crosstrek. Mind you, the P300 powertrain, which includes a 14.7-hp belt-integrated starter-generator, is no rocket ship, either. More power and torque might shave nine-tenths of a second off the P250’s 0–60 time, but even so, an R-Dynamic HSE Evoque takes 1.8 seconds longer to get there than a Mercedes-Benz GLC 300.
And it’s not just the powertrain that makes the Evoque feel a little leaden: The steering, though accurate, doesn’t give quite the same feedback as it does in the old model, a characteristic not helped by the inertia of the bulky steering wheel, which looks to have been lifted straight from the bigger Velar. On the plus side, the nine-speed automatic transmission feels smoother and more refined than in the previous model, and the brake pedal, while still a little soft, requires less travel to spur the four-wheel disc brakes into action. The chassis is pretty well balanced for a vehicle built on a front-drive architecture and with 59 percent of its weight on the front axle.
Although the stiffer body structure, new front subframe, and new rear axle means less noise and more refinement than before, the new Evoque’s on-road ride and handling is still on the firm and sporty side. A little too firm and too sporty, perhaps, especially given the powertrain’s languid personality; it would be nice to have a baby Range Rover with the plush, measured ride quality that once distinguished the brand from every other SUV on the market. Our tester was fitted with the optional Adaptive Dynamics and Configurable Dynamics systems ($1,070 in total), but even in Comfort settings it rode more like a hot hatch than a premium SUV, the low-profile 20-inch tires thwacking over manhole covers and road acne.
Not that many First Edition buyers will care to find out, but with 8.3 inches of ground clearance and 19.5-degree approach and 30.6-degree departure angles, the Evoque will confidently go further into the boonies than its rivals. And it can wade through pools of water up to 23.6 inches deep. Land Rover’s excellent Terrain Response 2 system, which rapidly optimizes the driveline to the conditions, plus All Terrain Progress Control, Hill Descent Control, and Low Traction Launch Control, are all standard equipment across the Evoque lineup.
Like its predecessor, the 2020 Range Rover Evoque looks, inside and out, as if it’s been driven straight out of the design studio and onto your local Land Rover dealer’s lot. It is, simply, a tremendously sophisticated piece of design, visually the best-executed compact SUV built on a front-drive vehicle architecture. But as an overall package it doesn’t move the needle like the original.
It looks more grown up, but the 2020 Evoque doesn’t feel more grown up. It needs more power, a more luxurious ride, and better fuel efficiency (the EPA numbers for the P250 powered Evoque—20/27/23 mpg city/highway/combined—are worse than those for the Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 with 2.0-liter turbo engines). And, as our experience during SUV of the Year testing last year showed, the infotainment system can still be buggier than a warm night in Tampa.
The 2020 Range Rover Evoque First Edition P250 has the style. It just needs the substance to match.

Chevrolet has taken the wraps off a its first ever production Corvette with a mid-mounted engine.
Equipped with Z51 Performance Package, the new Stingray will do the dash from 0-100km/h in less than 3.0 seconds.
Former Holden boss and now President of General Motors, Mark Reuss, explained the traditional front-engine layout had reached the limit of its performance potential, necessitating the change.
“In terms of comfort and fun, it still looks and feels like a Corvette, but drives better than any vehicle in Corvette history,” he said.
“Customers are going to be thrilled with our focus on details and performance across the board.”
Power comes from Chevy’s next-generation 6.2-litre Small Block V-8 LT2 engine, the only naturally aspirated V-8 in the segment.
It produces 369kW and 637Nm of torque when equipped with performance exhaust — the most power and torque for any entry Corvette.
The next generation LT2 is paired with Chevrolet’s first 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, which provides lightning-fast shifts and excellent power transfer.
Driver modes have been expanded from four to six, allowing drivers to tweak the feel to their personal preference.
The familiar Weather, Tour, Sport and Track modes remain, and there are two new modes:
MyMode, a configurable setting for preferred driving style that can remain between key cycles.
Z mode, named after the famed Z06, ZR1 and Z51 Corvette performance packages, is activated through a “Z” button on the steering wheel. This is a single-use mode that takes MyMode configurations one step further, allowing drivers to adjust the engine and transmission as well.
Chevrolet says the new mid-engine layout provides several advantages:
Better weight distribution, with the rear weight bias enhancing performance in a straight line and on the track.
Better responsiveness and sense of control due to driver positioning closer to the front axle, almost on top of the front wheels.
The fastest 0-100 time of any entry Corvette ever — under three seconds when equipped with Z51 Performance Package.
A race car-like view of the road due to lower positioning of the hood, instrument panel and steering wheel. Excellent forward sightlines throughout the vehicle for both driver and passenger.
An enhancement of Corvette’s traditional utility strengths, with dual trunks for a total of 357 litres of cargo volume, ideal for luggage or two sets of golf clubs
True to its aeronautical and racing roots, Stingray’s canopy-forward stance was inspired by F22s, F35s and other modern fighter jets and Formula One racing.
The look is a bold and futuristic, with mid-engine exotic proportions — but still unmistakably Corvette.
Vice president of Global Design and another Holden expat Aussie Mike Simcoe said the redesign had presented the team a historic opportunity, something Chevrolet designers have desired for over 60 years.
“It is now the best of America, a new arrival in the mid-engine sports car class,” he said.
“We know Corvette can stand tall with the best the world has to offer.”
A supercar level of craftsmanship, premium materials and attention to detail were critical in designing every component of the Stingray.
The new location of the engine is the focal point and sits like a jewel in a showcase, visible through the large rear hatch window.
The added attention to detail optimised the appearance of every wire, tube, bolt and fastener, similar to those found in modern track and all-road motorcycle design.
The Z51 Performance Package introduces a host of new technology:
•  Performance suspension with manually adjustable threaded spring seats •  Larger brake rotors with Z51 logo on calipers •  Enhanced cooling •  Specific axle ratio •  Front brake cooling inlets •  Performance exhaust
Corvette has always represented iconic American design, performance, technical ingenuity and attainability.
The entry 2020 Stingray continues that tradition as a no-compromise value proposition, as it will start under $US60,000.

So, Wizarding Robes
I saw this post by @iamnmbr3 and @kittenjammer talking about wizarding fashion and I wanted to talk about this for a while, so I'm going to give my own two cents on it based on fashion history. I love history in general, but fashion history and historical architecture are two I’m incredibly passionate about. So, here we go (post with a lot of pictures ahead):
When I read the books and they mentioned unisex “robes” which function like dresses in a way (as you don’t have to be wearing trousers beneath them:
James whirled about; a second flash of light later, Snape was hanging upside down in the air, his robes falling over his head to reveal skinny, pallid legs and a pair of graying underpants.
(OotP, 647)
And described as being very colorful and billowing, often accompanied by a pointed wizard hat, it was clear to me JKR was trying to invoke the image of the classic fantasy wizard robe:
Especially when it comes to Dumbledore.
The thing is, this style is based on a real historical period and historical styles of the medieval period in Europe.
Medieval Europian Robes
When I'm thinking about the "classic fantasy wizard look" the first historical period that comes to my mind is the 15th century and I'll illustrate why.
Spesificly, the 14th and 15th centuries houppelande. It was a long over garment that looked kinda like a dress with wide, flaring sleeves available for both men and women in various shapes, cuts, and even patterns. Here are examples of some houppelandes:
(As you can also see, early 15th-century fashion comes built-in with silly hats! Just like wizards)
In the 15th century you also have a wide array of cuts of cloaks (and even more silly hats!):
Along with surcoats, that contrary to their name, weren't just for knights to signify on their armor the house they serve:
These 15th-century garments are exactly like wizard fashion is described in the books: billowing robes, colorful and eye-catching, and accompanied by silly hats.
The thing is, all these garments are from the high medieval period and as wizards broke away from muggles only when the Statute of Secrecy was enacted, I'd expect their fashion to follow the muggle trend up to that point and then start diverging. Even the most pure-blooded wizarding families of the modern day, like the Malfoys, integrated with muggle circles up until the Statue of Secrecy, something that would've forced them to dress like the muggles at the time to blend in better.
As the Status of Secrecy was first enacted in 1692, it's time to talk about:
Late 17th Century Fashion
Now, while the high middle ages in Europe had everyone wearing essentially wizard robes and silly hats on the regular, the Statue of Secrecy was enacted much later. Fashion in the 17th century was drastically different from the earlier one mentioned above.
In the late 17th century, this is the kind of dress I'd expect from women in England:
And this is what I'd expect from men:
Which is very different from what is described but would've been the historical basis the wizards would work from.
So what do I think wizarding fashion is actually like?
Well, since the books are in the 1990s and wizards don't really live in a vacuum we know some later influences in fashion did make it in. So, I think wizarding fashion is an odd mix of 15th-century and late 17th-century fashions updated to the time period the wizard grew up in, hence distinct fashion changes between generations like we see in the muggle world.
We see these distinct generational fashion changes with characters like Agusta Longbottom who wears a Vulture hat. These sorts of hats with real birds on them were a thing historically. They were quite fashionable in the late Victorian era, which is when Agusta would've been a child if she's around Dumbledore's age:
Fudge is described as wearing a Bowler Hat, a kind of hat that started catching on in the late 19th century but was still a staple in menswear into the early 20th century, hence indicating Fudge's age.
Ron's yule ball dress robes are described as old-fashioned, again indicating fashions in the wizarding world change at a similar rate to the muggle one. Note that since the 17th century, fashion has been changing quite rapidly and by the 18th century fast fashion where you need to buy new garments each "season" has already started becoming a thing. With all that, I think wizard fashion indeed changes just as rapidly as the muggle one.
Now, that's great, and all, but, what would that odd mish-mash fashion even look like?
Well, I made a few very quick sketches as concept examples for what casual wizarding fashion in the UK might look like if we're working off historical references:
(not my best pieces, it's just to get the concept across)
Note that Wizengamot robes and other formal professional wear would probably be older in style and closer to 17th-century fashions.

2019 Toyota RAV4 vs. 2018 Honda CR-V Comparison: Crossover Showdown
Another year, another Toyota versus Honda faceoff. Last year, Honda’s redesigned Accord midsized sedan took on the sportiest Camry ever and won. In fact, it wasn’t much of a contest. The Toyota was much improved over its predecessor, but the Honda was clearly the superior car.
A year later, Toyota is back with a new contender in a different category. Evolving consumer tastes mean compact crossovers are now more important than family sedans. In 2017, the Camry’s 15-year reign as America’s best-selling vehicle (that isn’t a pickup) was ended by Toyota’s own outgoing RAV4. Across the industry, you can see the same trend. Sedan sales are shrinking while crossovers are booming. Honda, too, sold more CR-Vs in 2017 than it sold Accords or Civics for the first time.
Considering how much was at stake, Toyota took a big risk when it redesigned its best-seller for 2019. It abandoned the anonymous but inoffensive styling of the previous RAV4 in favor of a chunkier, more rugged look. The soft-road-focused Adventure version even gets a Tacoma-inspired grille and 19-inch wheels.
The RAV4 is also now built on the midsize version of Toyota’s TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform, meaning that mechanically it relates more closely to the new Camry than the current Corolla. That means a longer wheelbase, a wider track, and a bit more ground clearance even though the RAV4 is actually now shorter overall. Toyota says it’s also lighter and significantly stiffer than the outgoing model. At the New York auto show unveiling, executives and designers were noticeably proud of their accomplishment.
Now to the defending champion. There’s a reason we named the CR-V our 2018 SUV of the Year: Honda absolutely knocked it out of the park with the redesign. Smooth ride, precise steering, supremely functional packaging, gaping second-row space, advanced safety tech, powertrains with crisp acceleration and great fuel economy, and perhaps most important, a fantastic value. Knocking this king off its throne would be a challenge for any newcomer.
But looking at the new RAV4, Toyota was clearly gunning for the win. I don’t think anyone came into this comparison expecting to make an easy decision.
Take styling, for example. Neither the CR-V nor the RAV4 is conventionally attractive, but both have their own strengths. The CR-V’s looks push the limits of the term “polarizing,” but overall, its design is the more cohesive of the two. The RAV4, on the other hand, will probably alienate fewer potential buyers even if some design elements are better executed than others. The squared-off wheel arches, for example, work well enough on the RAV4 Adventure but look a little out of place on other trims.
Then again, this also isn’t a segment where buyers tend to prioritize looks. If it were, the Mazda CX-5 would sell a lot better than it does. But that’s a topic for another day.
Open the door to the RAV4, and you’re met with a cabin that’s perhaps an even bigger stylistic leap forward than the exterior. The large infotainment screen sits high on the dash with physical knobs and buttons on both sides, making it easy to read and operate. And depending on the trim, Toyota gives you different colored accent panels and contrast stitching.
The seats are comfortable and supportive, and materials mostly feel high quality. There are some hard plastics here and there, but it’s all a massive upgrade compared to the look and feel of other budget-conscious Toyota cabins over the past several years. Rear passengers won’t suffer, as there’s plenty of space for two adults or three children. Plus, materials in the back seem just as nice as they do up front.
Perhaps because we’re more familiar with the CR-V, its cabin doesn’t look as fresh as the RAV4’s. Honda also took fewer chances with the design, opting for a straightforward layout. But whereas the Toyota’s interior might look more intriguing, I was quickly reminded why the CR-V won last year’s SUV of the Year award.
In addition to the overall premium feel of our Touring model’s cabin, the CR-V’s functionality is truly impressive. There’s so much storage for front passengers that most people will struggle to find use for it all. And although there’s nothing wrong with what the RAV4 offers, if you are a bit of a hoarder, you’ll want the CR-V. It’s just that much better. For those who want the tale of the tape, Toyota did not provide cargo volume numbers, but my tape-measure calculations show the CR-V to have more room for your stuff.
There also are little executions that make a difference. For instance, the Honda’s doors swing open much wider than the Toyota’s. That might not sound like a big deal, but parents will appreciate how much easier the CR-V makes dealing with kids and child seats. The CR-V also deserves its own award for clever packaging and functionality.
That said, I did have a few miscellaneous quibbles with each. In the CR-V, the shift lever wiggles just enough to be annoying. And in the RAV4, the plastic used for the key and the gas cap feels surprisingly chintzy. Neither is a dealbreaker, but both companies can (and should) do better.
In that same vein, we found that the RAV4’s doors shut with a decidedly downmarket, tinny sound. Almost like it’s missing a piece of insulation or sound deadening. Typically, I’d chalk it up to the alleged preproduction status of our tester, but the Camry’s doors make the same hollow sound. Maybe buyers won’t care, but once you notice it, it’s impossible to miss.
Before we get you behind the wheel, a quick Editor’s Note: The 2019 Toyota RAV4s used in this comparison test conducted in September were preproduction units that Toyota later claimed might not have been fully representative of the final product with regard to final engine tuning, suspension tuning, or software calibration. However, when delivered, the Limited was described as “production spec,” and our Adventurer merely had “some unfinished pieces.” Bearing that in mind, we also drove newer, updated pre-production versions at a November media event and mostly noticed improvements in the powertrain calibration.
Here’s the thing about Honda engines: You never notice them. You push the start button, the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder fires up, and that’s about it. No one who drives a CR-V will ever think about the way the silky, seamless engine sounds. That’s far from the case with the RAV4. Even commuters with no interest in cars will notice the Toyota 2.5-liter I-4 sounds coarse, unrefined, and obnoxiously loud.
At least the RAV4 makes plenty of power. The CR-V’s turbo-four cranks out 190 hp and 179 lb-ft of torque, but the RAV4 has an advantage. Its engine is good for 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. That was enough to launch our front-drive RAV4 Limited from 0 to 60 mph in 8.2 seconds, 0.4 second quicker than the all-wheel-drive CR-V. (We previously clocked a string of 7.5s in several 2017 AWD CR-Vs in cooler weather, but we’re confident the RAV4 would be quicker as well under better conditions) Noted technical director Frank Markus: “The RAV4 engine sounds gravelly, but it makes good power for the segment.”
On the test track, the Honda did its best to make up for its acceleration deficit with its superior braking and a better performance in our handling tests. But looking past the raw numbers, the CR-V impressed us with how composed it stayed no matter how hard we pushed it. The Honda was calm and collected; the Toyota, however, had substantial body roll and felt chaotic during hard cornering. Beyond the vague steering and body roll issues, we also felt an unwelcome powertrain vibration through the steering wheel and floor pan in the RAV4 that wasn’t present in the CR-V.
“There’s plenty of front-end bounce in the RAV4, and the steering is pretty dead, with no communication whatsoever,” associate online editor Stefan Ogbac said. “The RAV4 lacks the CR-V’s balance.”
One thing we didn’t expect was how much we preferred the CR-V’s continuously variable transmission. Almost everyone at Motor Trend hates CVTs for their droning power delivery. But Honda makes a good example. Still, no matter how well a CVT is tuned, Toyota’s traditional eight-speed automatic should feel superior and more accurate, right? Wrong. The RAV4’s automatic often felt like it was a step behind our desires, especially when lurching away from rolling “California stops.”
“The RAV’s Sport-mode transmission programming is slightly more aggressive,” Markus said about spirited driving in the Toyota. “But every time you lift for a corner, engine revs plunge to 3,000 rpm as if in the fervent hope that the driver is about to stop behaving like a high school kid who’s stolen Mom’s keys.”
In day-to-day driving, it’s hard to imagine most owners would push either car that hard. And when they’re driven, as Markus would say, “like a civilian,” the RAV4 and CR-V are “both just nice, reasonably quiet, decent-riding station wagons.” That’s not damning them with faint praise, either. These are two incredibly practical, versatile daily drivers that will make a lot of owners happy. Nothing underscored that point quite like a few hours of highway driving.
Starting with the Honda, it didn’t take long for the CR-V to remind me why it’s such a great road-trip car. It was quiet, the seats were comfortable, and it packed an impressive amount of technology. It would be nice if the infotainment screen were a bit larger, but it’s still easy to read and intuitive to use.
Most owners will probably skip over Honda’s system entirely, though, opting instead to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. That’s probably even more the case now than it was earlier this year now that CarPlay supports third-party navigation apps such as Waze. At least they’ll use it if it works.
“I pressed the Apple Maps button, and the screen went completely black,” Markus said. “This after we had a really difficult-to-explain low-contrast brightness issue with the screen. This also miraculously cured itself for no obvious reason.”
Thankfully, Honda’s driver-assist features proved more reliable. Impressive, even. Adaptive cruise control sped up and slowed down smoothly with traffic flow, and the lane-centering steering assist reliably kept the CR-V, well, centered in the lane (as opposed to ping-ponging between the stripes). There are systems that are more advanced, but they’re also only available on cars that cost several times more.
Since the CR-V has been out for a couple years now, there wasn’t as much to discover or as many questions to answer during that highway stint. The Toyota’s newness, though, made it a little more of a mystery.
Switching into the RAV4 served as a great reminder that Toyota’s design team really nailed the interior. Front storage was still an issue, but at least the cabin looked stylish. The seats were also more comfortable and supportive than I remember in the redesigned Camry.
It’s refreshing to see Toyota trying harder with its infotainment system. The upgraded 8.0-inch screen sits high on the dash, flanked on either side by physical buttons. It would be nice if the buttons were larger, but I’m glad they exist. The system’s user interface, however, isn’t great.

2018 Volkswagen Jetta SE For Sale
2018 Volkswagen Jetta SE For Sale – The actual 2018 VW Jetta is certainly a European undertake the small sedan. That hasn’t competitive consumers through looking to match up prices using the rivalry. Previous generations from the VW Jetta had been promoted as kind of a near-superior substitute for the typical small sedans in the Suggests. But when the most recent technology from the Jetta (as well as its large sister, all the Volkswagen Passat) first showed in the USA a few years ago, which altered. Now you can invest in a 2018 VW Jetta SE just like the one I examined regarding well beneath $20,000 at many VW retailers. It is price-very competitive with just about everything from the portion when the optionally available gear is deemed.
Exterior
The actual 2018 Volkswagen Jetta persists the particular design was only available in 2011. It is clean – anodyne, perhaps. Several criticized it “boring” if it debuted. When compared to swoopy types of the competitors, possibly it was a little unexciting. The particular Jetta’s directly collections, as well as facial lines, have been in well-defined contrast to the curvy, flame-like appearing associated with, claim, a 2012 Hyundai Elantra. However here’s one thing: The actual VW Jetta’s design features aged nicely. Additional car manufacturers possess sensed compelled to redesign their compacts on entire or maybe in component since the 2011 Jetta’s debut. VW has made slight tweaks, but the standard design remains the same as this had been.
Up front, there’s a very clean, thin grille opening involving the two front lights that keep the grille’s overall shape, turning upward with the outdoors corners. There’s a lesser grille starting underneath the bumper hit deal with that increases this kind of shape. A couple of clear lid wrinkles commence with the meeting point of the upper grille along with the headlights, streaking way back in an elegant arc in the direction of the side wall mirrors.
Interior
All the interior from the 2018 VW Jetta is roomy, filled with meaning, rather than because luxurious when previous Jetta generations. The exam car had a lot of hard, tickly plastic materials. However VW carefully integrated soft-contact surfacing on the areas the majority of apt to be touched – door arm sits, the center unit left arm rest, leather in the controls and also gear shift. In upper cuts, the upper sprint receives soft, shot-molded plastic-type as opposed to the difficult, hollow-sounding stuff in the SE.

But are you considering squeezing your dashboard or traveling the car? The 2018 VW Jetta SE features great ergonomics. The slim-rimmed controls feel very good inside the fingers. The transfer lever seems very good, too, and it has a nice weight to it. All the pedal pack is a lot large enough about Us-sizing toes as well as contains a positively huge deceased ride for your kept feet when they are not working all the clutch.
Drivetrain
My own analyze car had been designed with a scarcity within this segment: a five-pace guidebook transmitting. That put into the Germanic charms, featuring its gentle-and-straightforward clutch modulation and its substantial-experiencing shifter. All the clutch has been simpler to regulate compared to the final guidebook-transmitting VW I made, all the Golf R. Admittedly, the Golf R can be an overall performance car along with makes almost twice as much hp when the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta SE check car, but it got an irritating deceased place inside the clutch pedal vacation which made it difficult to acquire used to for the initial day or two. The Volkswagen Jetta’s clutch was far more organic. I had been right away comfy driving a car it.
The actual transmitting presented vast proportion propagates, with the two-fourth along with fifth equipment simply being overdriven over a 3.23:1 ultimate drive proportion. Genuinely, introducing the sixth cog could just have the steps between your initially four gears quicker – and needlessly so, for the reason that twisting is available with so very early.

Some wand redesigns
So, as in continuation to this post and my not liking some of the Harry Potter movies designs, I actually redesigned some wands. Mostly because in the movies none of the wands look to be made of the wood they are supposedly made of and it annoyed me.
The Elder Wand
The Elder Wand is the first I redesigned because I personally find the movie one kinda ugly. I don't know if it's just me, but I do. I wanted the Elder wand to look like a Deathstick, you know? I wanted to keep some of the silhouette from the movies but play around with the wood to make it look more interesting.
This is the color of European Elder:
But, when researching this wood, I saw Box Elder (native to America) which looks like it Bleeds:
So, I took inspiration from it to design a wand that is called the Deathstick:
I was going for something that resembled arteries but kept some of the movies' silhouette.
Voldemort's Wand
The wand in the movies is iconic for its bone-like look, the thing is, that's not what yew wood looks like. Europian yew actually has a very warm golden color:
And honestly, the resulting wand, which I still gave some of the iconic angles doesn't look as stereotypically evil. Because, for real, why would Ollivanders make an evil-looking wand and expect its owner not to turn to villainy?
As I said, I tried to give it some of the iconic movies' silhouette, but made it sharper and angular instead of bony, to give it somewhat of an evil look, even with the golden color.
Harry's Wand
Now, if any wand is bone white, it's Harry's holly wand:
European Holly, as you can see is practically white (the photo is not the whitest it can go). But I didn't want Harry's wand to look evil, so I made sure to keep all the angles rounder:
I also gave it a lighter pattern in the wood, kind of like Harry's scar, so they could match.
