*emcee voice* hello sfth fandom, by the request of myself and literally four people (hi @not-an-idiot @very-confused-alpaca @chaostributary97 @bbatcat), i give you
my best attempt at a list of disability representation in the sfthverse
*for the purposes of the list, "disability" includes physical/mental/developmental disabilities, neurodivergence, chronic illnesses, and mental health conditions
*i went through and added as many as i could think of but easily could've missed some. also i can't get the patreon rn so there's no patreon exclusive characters, sorry. if you know of some more feel free to reply/reblog and i'll add them!
canon (either explicit or heavily implied)
bubba (inside the mysterious cube) is stated to be an amputee with prosthetic legs
peter steven (the milkman) is stated to have adhd; granted its a throwaway line but i think it's true. since adhd has a large genetic component, that implies that either janet or david or both likely also has it- my money's on david since peter seems to mostly take after him
post mortem, L (the creak in the attic) is mute and uses mime/sign language and possession as forms of aac
donnie (the detective vs. the christmas tree bandits), my personal blorbo, is explicitly stated to have adhd and a seizure disorder- likely photosensitive epilepsy based on the mentions of the lights in the strip club. "i was never good with numbers" could be interpreted as dyscalculia as well. frankie may also have adhd bc again genetics, but if he does he can mask like a motherfucker
chip (the cardboard stegosaurus) has an unspecified seizure disorder (although i can't find one that turns you french), and while she isn't present, we learn that his mother marie-claire was suicidal
queen of representation that she is, amanda (clarissa's diy wedding) is all but confirmed to have prosopagnosia, or face blindness
according to divorces and teddy bears, the entire north pole elf population has adhd. congrats on the diagnosis luke i mean snowball
"that one gas station man" as @doodle-ratz called him (the pilot's final flight) is blind
mrs jeffery (the milkman) was blind at the beginning of the scene, they ended up not going with that but she probably does still have poor vision
the bartender (the hare who wore a sweater) slut dropped so hard his knees exploded, and that's now a sentence i've said on the internet. im.... not sure what to count this as tbh, but as a person with vague undiagnosed joint fuckery myself, he makes the list regardless
they don't like... SAY IT say it, but john hobson (the creak in the attic) with the whole "thunderstorm killed my parents" thing probably has ptsd. like yall see it too right
based on body language, granddad (wine under the bridge) appears to use a walker, suggesting mobility issues
headcanons (still implied like at least a little bit but mostly up to interpretation, this is mine)
*(this one's messy, its more me sensing vibes than anything else, there's almost definitely some projection in there, honestly you can disregard it if you want. spoilers its mostly autism bc that's me)
frankie (the bard with a scar) says that he can't run fast, maybe implying mobility issues? i like to think so
i don't think their ages are ever established so i may be completely off base and they're just meant to be children, but jimmy (toby's secret pocket) and jeffery (party quirks) are both autistic teenagers/young adults to me. jeffrey specifically bc he reminds me immensely of how i acted the first and only time i threw a party
i get... a vibe. from titch (the unrelenting aubergine). im not sure what it is, but its there
fellow autistic people yk how there's this weird kinda split that happens where when you're a kid people think you're mature for your age but then once you're older people think you're immature? yeah johnny and janae (the neighbor's under the bed) are the extreme incarnation of that dichotomy
someone in the comments of ballet on the battlefield pointed out alexa stimming after she befriends janusz and i love that so im saying she's some flavor of neurodivergent
troll-son (wine under the bridge) probably has some kinda allegory for something idk
because of the way i visualize character designs for sfth, pretty much any character luke played while wearing glasses (like andrew (all eyes on nigel) or fullset o'hands) also wears glasses. im not gonna list them all just know they're included
i've been working on this list for seven hours. i feel like sysiphus (thats a very smart reference). im going to bed

btw shoutout to those who feel they are aspec because of their autism. To the aros, aces, apls, afams, and everyone else who feels their orientation is a direct result of their neurodivergency. Your feelings are valid, and you're not "just reinforcing stereotypes" by being yourself, bc you're not a character in a story, but a real person with real, lived experiences. I see you and I feel you

Having to smile and nod along with your teacher while he's spewing ableist nonsense BC if you speak up or outwardly disagree he'll see you as "problematic" instead of "grateful" and take away necessary accommodations, is a special kind of hell.
I have the right to study here just as much as anyone else, I shouldn't be having to sit there and have him talk shit about accommodations or my disabled peers. I shouldn't have to make myself fit his idea of a "correct" disabled student to be able to do this course. I shouldn't have to divulge deeply personal information to get him to agree that I am "one of the good" students-with-accomodations. And my peers that refuse to tell him about their personal lives shouldn't be labelled "difficult" or "uncooperative" because they (rightly!) want to keep their private information private!

Character Analysis of Josh Levy
Tumblr media
Sorry if this is shit, idk how to word my feelings on Josh. Gonna go about each character very differently bc they're all complex in their own right and I have so many thoughts. Brain so full. He’s the most tragic of them all, super overlooked, misunderstood, and underrated. He’s someone who’s hard to analyze, since he’s so guarded. Plus I distance myself from him bc he's too real lol
I feel the most integral part of Josh's character is the fact that he's neurodivergent. He's always been very autistic-coded in writing, but it was also confirmed by Dorkin that he is somewhere on the neurodivergent spectrum, which changes his character completely from just a gluttonous selfish loser to a cautionary tale of what can happen when autistic children get no resources or room to be "weird" in public.
When we first meet Josh, it's established that he's the laughing stock of the group. In the first meeting that we see, the rest of the club has managed to get all types of pop culture merchandise from all over the place, but Josh's are more childish, like Animaniacs and Flintstones. He also went the easiest route, basically relying on his mother if he wanted to get anything done. All in all, not very complex, and this gets him laughed at immediately.
He is only treated with respect when he has something the rest of the club values, and has to use it as leverage to get any kind of positive feedback. During open debate, he's almost sneered at by the rest of the group and doesn't even realize it, since he's loud and corny and laughs at his own jokes. When they play DnD, he's shown to be very insecure and terrible at decision-making, once again getting him endlessly shit on by Pete. And once his leverage is gone, he's mocked again, especially for falling for such an easy scam.
There is a lot to unpack there, very quickly. The story almost makes it easy to point and jab at someone like Josh, without looking much deeper than the surface. He's the Eltingville Club's personal Chris-Chan, or Tophia, or Daniel Larsen.
Josh Levy has a Binge Eating Disorder
Josh has bad eating habits, both in the comics and pilot. He's willing to eat stale Doritos from a trash can, is constantly shoving fast food in his face, and bulk buys food constantly for the collectibles, eating it all instead of throwing it away like his friends. It even leads to health problems and discomfort, like when he was eating nothing but Batman-shaped Mac and Cheese for days and had extreme bathroom issues. This is meant to show his gluttony, but even that represents the issue Josh has faced all his life - his problems being portrayed as his own fault and made into a gag. Being fat is not a moral failure, but everyone has always told Josh that it was.
Binge eating stems from somewhere. You aren't born with those habits, and there's a reason he feels stupid and ashamed every time he participates in it. Josh has always faced a lack of control and emotional support from everyone in his life, leading to him trying to find it in both escapism and food binges. It's also a sign of even bigger mental health issues, but no one steps in. His own family shows a lack of care or consideration for their son, along with enabling his habits by constantly buying more for him. He has very little say in his own life, but he does at least have a say in how he eats and the things that bring him joy, even if it's destroying him.
Enabling Parents
While I wouldn’t say Josh has good parents, they at least have some type of care for him, and he obviously comes from a family with money. His parents are very old, and his mother is sickly, which means that they probably can’t discipline him in the way that he needed as a child. Even when Josh was grounded, it was a very light punishment compared to what he did (literally vandalism) and it’s clear there aren’t many rules in his house.
They essentially allow Josh to do whatever he wants, and throw money at him constantly, but refuse to actually look at what he needs emotionally that is causing all these outbursts. They show very little care when Josh is distraught, don’t address his binge eating habits or obsessions or why he’s having dreams of his friends beating him to a pulp. They constantly buy him a bunch of junk food when they can see the impact it’s having on his health, or maybe they don’t pay enough attention to notice. With his mother being sick, it’s very likely that he didn’t get much attention, and tried to get it from everywhere else in his life. He’s emotionally neglected and physically spoiled, trying to use material possessions to fill that void.
Josh’s Autistic Traits
I’m going to have to make a bullet pointed list for this, since there’s so many instances that it’s hard to pinpoint all of it.
Emotional Outbursts/Emotional Impermanence - Josh has been shown on multiple occasions to feel things very strongly, and acts out because of how emotional he gets. Particularly, his anger often overwhelms him. It’s very common for people on the spectrum to lack the ability to regulate their emotions and self soothe in a typical fashion, which leads to meltdowns, and angry outbursts. Josh clearly has a hard time conveying what he’s thinking when he’s upset, often getting tripped up and desperate, like trying to explain himself during the trivia-off, and trying to set boundaries with the club about the fat jokes only to be met with laughter and ridicule. I firmly believe he’s had meltdowns multiple times on screen, and it’s not always just him throwing a tantrum. He’s also able to switch his emotions very quickly, going from fuming with anger to beaming with joy, as if he’d felt nothing else beforehand.
Social Obliviousness - Josh often doesn’t realize he’s the butt of the joke when it’s not spelled out for him. His friends don’t even want to be seen next to him at times, and he never really realizes the degree in which they hate him. He makes a fool out of himself constantly, but doesn’t realize how people perceive him OUTSIDE of being a fat nerd, and has no desire to know and no self-reflection. Once again, I feel that the dream he has about his friends beating him up until he bleeds is significant, because he asks himself “what could that possibly mean” when it is VERY obvious to the rest of the audience.
His Special Interests Shape His World - Josh isn’t shown to be the brightest in many aspects; in the pilot he’s prone to making mistakes, he often comments in the comics about how he comes to realizations far slower than the rest of his friends. But when it comes to his special interests like Star Wars, he’s a human encyclopedia. He knows the most out of the group about anything sci-fi and comic related, even trying to build an actual functional Iron-Man suit by himself (before lighting himself on fire, but that’s still knowledge and dedication). The way he calms down is literally sorting his figure into lines. He can’t take his mind off of it even in important situations, like in the pilot when he’s being screamed at by Bill’s mom but is still caught up in the DnD game. His job in the future is literally him trying to be a comic writer. He cannot function in the world without his special interests being involved, and since most people were very hostile towards him and his interests, this manifests in him being defensive and obsessive instead of forming a normal relationship with it.
Lack of Empathy - Josh is very rude, like everyone in the club. While his harassment of others isn’t an autistic trait, it does show that he has a hard time putting himself in other people’s shoes. Even when he does care about people, like his mother, or Bill not getting a chance to get a Star Wars figure because Josh keeps hoarding them, or Pete after the zombie walk, he can’t conceptualize how they feel if it doesn’t affect him. It may not even dawn on him, because of his social ineptitude.
Missing Social Cues - Josh isn’t the best in social situations; from the painful conversation with the many cashiers at fast food places, to the scene during DnD, in the comics, when Josh is confronted with a social interaction with a girl and completely falls apart. He’s awkward, he’s loud, and he has no idea he’s awkward and loud. He’s also very blunt, and sincere with his words, not realizing that other people can say something and mean another, like when he showed up to job interviews and talked about Godzilla, thinking the hiring manager was interested.
Black and White Thinking/Paranoia - Josh jumps to conclusions often. With him, it’s either something is the worst thing to ever exist, or it’s perfect and you’re not allowed to criticize it. He has a hard time understanding that grey area, and this also reflects on how he views other people. Unlike Bill or Pete who form their judgements of “normies” on trends they’ve noticed and behaviors they’ve watched from afar, Josh thinks they’re all inherently bad based on his own experiences being bullied. And he believes all nerds are inherently better because of his friend group and experiences. Seeing someone who’s both preppy and enjoys nerdy media would probably turn his entire world view upside down.
Disorganization/Executive Functioning Issues - Josh can’t care for himself on his own, and has a hard time in public places. In the pilot it’s more evident, during the DnD game when he’d been shown to drop everything, make poor decisions, be hyper focused on small issues and details while ignoring the big picture, which can reflect how he conducts himself in real life. Even just making himself a meal or going grocery shopping is hard for Josh, which can be partly caused by his parents babying him too much, and partly from lack of executive functioning skills.
The Lolcow-ification of Josh
Unfortunately it’s a big part of his character stereotype that this story takes place in the early 2000s, which means the general population is very hostile to both fat people AND autistic people. Being both means that anyone and everyone will find an excuse to shit on you, and it will be socially accepted to do so. So it’s not unreasonable to assume Josh has been socially outcasted since his birth. Social Isolation is scientifically the worst pain humans can go through as a social species - it manifests in the brain as physical pain. And being exposed to that pain your whole life leaves you traumatized.
I’m going to be a dork for a second and reference my favorite book; much like how Frankenstein’s monster was not born violent, but grew to be so after being rejected and betrayed by everyone he knew, Josh‘s positive traits slowly became overshadowed by his insecurity and defensiveness.
It’s rather heartbreaking, how hard it is to analyze Josh when he is so clearly defined by trauma. Especially since it’s a fact that no autistic person in our society has really gone without trauma. It’s hard to know the real Josh when he’s always on defense mode. His trauma is also heavily overlooked, both in the story and in reality. Since he is most likely undiagnosed, he probably sees it as his own fault.
Josh’s Positive Traits
When he’s so often looked down upon, I feel like it’s important to have a little segment all about the good things in Josh that’d hard to notice.
Creativity - Josh is actually very imaginative. From his desires to become a comic writer, to his eagerness during the costume contest, he’s shown a desire to create and is always full of ideas. Good ones? Maybe not. But full of ideas nonetheless.
Loyalty - Josh puts up with shit no one in the whole world should let slide. When Josh truly loves someone, like the club, he doesn’t leave them. It may be partially caused by his follower tendencies, but he’ll stick by and defend his friends in any situation. Even when he swears he’s leaving for good, like when he daydreams of shooting his friends in the head, or claims the end of the Eltingville Club in the pilot, he always comes back.
Attention to Detail/Ingenuity - Josh is the type to notice things no one else notices, which often comes in handy, like during the trivia-off and how he managed to make the stash of collectibles in toy stores for the club. It’s an important skill, especially when the rest of the club doesn’t pay as much attention is he does. He tends to take the long way when solving problems, so this attention to detail often means coming up with unique solutions to difficult problems.
Honesty - Josh says what he means, which is real as fuck. Saying he’s gonna piss his pants in excitement is not only humorously blunt but also goes to show that he’s not gonna hide what he thinks or how he feels for anyone. The type of friend you go to when you want someone to tell you how it is and not sugarcoat it.
——
Yeah that’s all I’ve got for now. Too many thoughts and too little words I may explode. I just wanna squish him

"Jack it's nice that you want to make all the characters more openly neurodivergent since they're already so coded as such, but Dendy is already written with savantism you can't make her more autistic"
WRONG
Tumblr media
Listen, half of this au is just personal wish fulfillment on things I wish they were able to do but know it would've been borderline if not entirely impossible bc of CN, (like Radmond content I mean what)
And something that you seldom see in cartoons is selectively nonverbal characters, or characters with aids for such things, and as someone who often uses text instead of talking because well, being verbal is tiring as hell, I think that's a serious missed opportunity.
Dendy already carries a high-tech aid with them everywhere and I think working that into their identity can only add to them as a character.
Otherwise, Dendy is mostly unchanged out of everyone. Partially because, I love them as is. They're one of the only savant characters I haven't genuinely hated (those also tend to be live-action ones-) and with such a broad range of neurodivergent coding in this cast it's much more natural to have representation of this specific subsection as well.
...wow this was not as much about them as much as it was about their og character, hold on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With a hyperfixation on all things tech (pow cards especially) and coding, they're a quick-thinking and talented young hero. Although sometimes their thinking tends to lean more morally grey than other children. Because most adults see their accomplishments at such a high level for a 6-11 year old, they have the instinct to impress those older than them. And while this comes easily most of the time, in cases like Ms. Quantum it leaves them feeling like a failure and pushing themselves to a burnout degree.
Hanging out with K.O. in or out of the bodega makes them feel relaxed, and like they don't have to live up to any special expectations. They can simply share their interests as they wish.
They use all pronouns, but mainly go by they/them, as they don't feel any particularly strong ties with gender as a whole.
(Also don't worry I'm actively working on the surprise that came with Dendy winning but I didn't want it to hog their spotlight)

I was gonna ask a question but i honestly forgot it 😅 so just tell me something you want to rant about
If you do happen to remember what you were gonna ask feel free to do so, do not worry about spamming my inbox bc I live for that shit.
As for the rant
Transformers Rescue Bots had some of the best, kindest, and most respectful representation of neurodivergence I have ever seen in media and I'm tired of pretending it didn't.
While there are obvious complaints to be made about neurodivergent traits (especially autistic traits) usually being portrayed in media by inhuman characters like aliens or robots, this being a case of both, I feel like thats a pretty negligible sin given just how human the show makes the robots feel. (Also it was like 2011 and we were STRUGGLING for any scraps of rep anyway)
But like. The behaviors all these robots exhibit are all shit that I do that was always deemed unacceptable when I was a kid and seeing it portrayed with the level of kindness and gentleness they do in that show has me fuckin crying a little man. I wish I had actually watched it when I was younger and it was first airing because maybe if I did I would've had an easier time explaining what the hell was going on with my brain a LOT sooner.
Blades being anxious, overly sensitive, and WHOLEHEARTEDLY queer (which they had the absolute unparalleled balls to just casually confirm by having him swoon over "hunky vampires" in one episode and NOBODY commented on it. Fucking iconic) and getting so so deeply invested in the shows and movies he loves that he acts out the roles with enough passion to steel his nerves and completely flourish.
Boulder getting really confused at concepts that are basic and intuitive for most people, but still being so fucking intelligent, and never being made to feel stupid for the mix-ups, as well as just being so wholely, unabashedly in love with the planet he's found himself on, even if he doesn't understand all of it (Also apologizing to inanimate objects when he knocks them over 😭)
Chase being obsessed with rules and law because he NEEDS the structure to not fall apart at the seams, even feeling the need to fabricate a minor crime to justify using the emergency line to get a hold of the firehouse when he can't find the other bots. As well as just fully not understanding comedy (BUT TRYING HIS DAMNEDEST), taking things super literally, and having a lot of trouble with tone and expressions (even though you know just how deeply he feels All The Time).
Heatwave being desperate for attention and recognition, but completely allergic to asking for it. And honestly allergic to showing any genuine emotional responses other than aggression. The constant sarcasm and sass and defensiveness that he POORLY maintains because everyone knows that underneath that tough guy front is the loneliest robot on earth that wants to be loved SO bad but would rather jump into unicron's mouth than voice it because if he lets his guard down who knows what will happen to him or the people he cares about.
Just. All of it man. Seeing them exhibiting all these behaviors and quirks that all too often get met with poor reactions from people who don't want to deal with what they don't really get, but here they're met with patience and understanding?? It's got me fucked up. They get to be functional adults that struggle with what they have going on but still push through. They get to have unconditionally loving relationships with people that treat them with respect. And that's the kind of shit that gives me a lot of hope for folks like me because maybe some neurotypical kids that watched it picked up on what's helpful when their friend who acts like one of the bots is going through it. And maybe some neurodivergent kids watched it too and for the first time they just felt SEEN.
Okay rant over, I'm gonna go cry over some plastic robots 👍

Fuck it whatever it's my blog I think I can rant whatever I want
(expasated Victorian lady voice) oh lord heavens! I feel so angry!
#ok this is gonan have several disclaimers first I'm not a good writer myself but like when ur writing a character with disorders/on the spec#you should at least do your research. or don't do it at all. it's actually very obvious whej if someone's trying or not regardless of how-#“good” they are at their craft. if ur writing something you DON'T have experience with you can at the very least look things up?#I'd likely not talk about this but I've been seeing this person so frequently i have a feeling its not even smth theu wrote themselves so#overstimulation has different levels but when ur writing a char who has autism+ is overstimulated taking away one source of sensory overload#isnt going to make everything go away. if they're stressed by noise and bright light (two sources) u should try adjusting both to calm them#but even that is acceptable i just...i just felt upset by how the other char treated them#saying “I admire how you see the world” sounds nice on paper but comes across weird when said person is overstimulated and clearly upset btw#picking up thinhs normal people miss too...even if that's true saying it when stimuli others are ok with is clearly TROUBLING them is like#and also. use of “little quirks” to describe these things is really really hurtful#“quirks” are not adhering to social norms bc u find it fun but autism is being UNABLE to do so u dont get a choice. that's the whole reason-#why “masking” exists. why ppl made up stuff like “high and low functioning” autism.#being autistic (and neurodivergent in general) is punished socially unless ur acting in an “acceptable” way.#saying being w someone w autism is a “challenge” u like is also very#feels like a backhanded compliment#cherry on top w “I'll gamble on us anyday” in character? maybe. but given the context? feels awful#idk I might be being a negative nelly but i dont careeeee I was eo upset#oh well. im not tagging this as anything so it's ok

I've been rewatching Wayne and I can't get this idea out of my brain:
Wayne Creek Au.
I don't really like the fanon "bad/fuckboy Craig" BUT I love the aggressive and neurodivergent/autistic one, so I think that fits Wayne a fucking lot lol
Like, resting bitch face 24/7 dude who only smiles when his loved ones are around, fucks everyone up because of his strong sense of justice (and sometimes just because he can, I'm assuming it's bc he wants to feel something, but that's just my interpretation), can't pick up sarcasm or social cues, doesn't know how to express his feelings, isn't able to lie, barely talks, happy when high and slightly hyperfixated with the same person for years (we actually don't know if that's true, but it's strongly implied after the revelation of "cookies" and "blackmail" that when he saw Del for the first time he was like "damn i love her"). In love with a bad bitch with an attitude who wants to leave her family behind because they mistreat her, can and will fight you if you get on her way, cool as hell in his eyes but messed up for everyone else, goes along with his boyfriend's weirdness and also doesn't know how to express her feelings without being defensive.
They're both loners with one friend (or none in Del's case, since we don't see her interacting with her friend from the campaign) that just want to leave everything behind and start over, and I can totally see Tweek and Craig wanting to leave South Park and it's fucked people forever.

asdasdasd HELLO. your parents realised they were aro/ace after they got married?!?!?! no pressure at ALL but if you feel comfortable i would loveeee to hear more abt that oh my god, incredible
HI YES. HAPPY TO ELABORATE BC THIS IS NOT PUBLIC INFORMATION AND THUS CANNOT DOX ME
so the wildest part about all this, potentially, is that they both figured this out literally less than 6 months ago.
my mom was in therapy one day and had The Realization that actually she's an ace lesbian. this was after, I shit you not, having primarily open lesbian roommates and best friends from the age of 12 onward despite being raised in a hellishly conservative Catholic household. literally ALL of whom, when she told them, were like "yeah???? we could tell??? but we weren't gonna crack your egg???"
my dad was literally ready and happy to be a bachelor for the rest of his life 2 months before meeting my mom. unfortunately they insta-clicked and, in retrospect, mistook that neurodivergent "this person Gets Me like literally no one else ever has" friendship giddiness for love and got married less than a year later.
the kicker??
all of those lesbian friends (and MY DAD'S LESBIAN FRIENDS AS WELL BECAUSE HE ALSO HAD A BILLION LESBIAN FRIENDS BTW) were joking the ENTIRE TIME!!!!! that the two of them were honorary lesbians.
anyway in the last 2 years they've both realized they're autistic and in the last six months realized they were different flavors of acespec and ya know I think that's why my family is straight up just Chill. there's never been relationship drama. there's always been a level of respect for children as People. sex ed was never an issue cause everyone just treated it as A Thing That People Can Do For Fun and not as a relationship definer. it's wild
they're both 52. btw. and have been married for 25 years
