My Demon
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
My Demon (2023/24, South Korea)
Director: Kim Jang Han
Writer: Choi Ah Il
Mini-review:
Look, I'm not gonna lie. I started this drama for a very superficial reason: Kim Yoo Jung and Song Kang are one of the most gorgeous couples I've ever seen. And tbh, that's one of the things that kept me watching until the end. The first half was pretty fun, thanks to their will-they-won't-they dynamic and some really funny supporting characters and recurring gags. Unfortunately, it began to drag around the middle part, and then it got more and more boring with each passing episode. By the time the final episode came out, I no longer cared about the plot, the characters or anything else (although the ending itself was quite nice). With all that in mind, I can't help but think My Demon would have worked much better as a movie.

The Glory (2022 -
A woman lives for absolute revenge against her childhood bullies who destroyed her life.
📝A superb drama about revenge. It's just unlike anything else I have ever seen, everything is just perfectly written, directed and shot. The first two episodes are a little slow so bear with it, and it really makes you hate the people who are doing the wrong and committing abuse but boy oh boy do they get the revenge they deserve! Absolutely brilliant. This was my first Korean Drama (or KDrama as it is widely known as) and I am now going to check out more shows from there. I highly recommend this if you like a good revenge drama and good twists. It is a proper binge-worthy show.

Decision to Leave - the RM connection
I saw Decision to Leave (2022) on the plane coming home on Friday. It's written and directed by Park Chan-Wook who also made the SK film classics Old Boy and The Handmaiden.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Watching the trailer again I can see real parallels with the style of The Handmaiden which was a film that stayed with me long after the credits rolled.
youtube
I found this review and I think it hits upon all the main themes and says many of the things I would have wanted to say about the film but in a more elegant and eloquent way.
It's clear that Decision to Leave also means something special to RM. In a recent interview with Park Chan Wook he said this in response a question on South Korea as a brand.
Tumblr media
In September 2022, Namjoon posted the following quotes from the movie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
11/09/22 RM's Instagram Story (Trans cr: Aditi @ bts-trans)
1. Hae-jun  (Keeping his eyes on the binoculars, pushing the massager away with one hand)  For some, sorrow comes crashing in waves. For others, it spreads gradually, like ink in water.
2. Seorae's 'aha' expression. (She hands over the umbrella and ties his unravelled shoelace) Hae-jun: I always try my best to look straight at people. If you look at the corpses we find at sites, about half of them have their eyes open.
3. Hae-jun: You said I was classy, didn't you? Do you know where that class comes from? It's pride. I was a policeman with pride. But in my madness over a woman, I screwed up the investigation. I......am completely shattered.
The shattered scene is devastating and central to the whole movie.
Tumblr media
Namjoon also posted the following mountain climbing clip where he uses some of the dialogue from the film.
25/09/22 RM's Instagram Story (Trans cr: Aditi @ bts-trans)
So it was not surprising that he should choose to pay tribute to one of his favourite films through music. This week he released an alternate version of Closer with clips from the film. I think this MV would be quite confusing to anyone who didn't understand the whole context but it does show that Namjoon is a lover of film noir and its take on love (obsessive and tragic).
youtube
"Decision to Leave X RM 'Closer' (with Paul Blanco, Mahalia) Collabo M/V, Made a little lofi arrangement to better match the mood of the film!, It's an honor to do this for the movie I love."
Tumblr media
And while we are talking about soundtrack music the song Mist by Jung Hoon Hee is repeated at various points in the film and really adds to the ambience of the film and its exploration of the femme fatale trope.

K-actors I need in a leading role very badly:
- Lee Soo Hyuk. I don’t really have to explain this one, but for those still sitting too far away: his voice alone is cause of heart attacks.
- Lim Ji Yeon. She’s great, she’s pretty and I’d like to see her in a series where she is given freedom to express herself in a way that does not necessarily have to scream ‘unapproachable bitch’ (even though…).
- Lee Ji Hun. He’s sexy, yes, but I’d also like for him to simply be silly and just see a lot of him. Please. We need more long haired DILF representation.
- Hwang In Youp. Again, I don’t need to explain this one, but I’d like to say that he deserves better. Let him act like a grown up Jung Joon Hyung (WLFKBJ).
- Lee Joo Bin. Let her be a bad bitch. Let her be a narcissistic asshole with money issues. Just let her act in more roles that are not ‘girlfriend’ or where she is crying all the time. Thanks.
- Shin Sung Rok. He’s been there but I cannot remember any single one of them (whether they were bad, or because I am still not over his version in Vagabond).
- Jung Sung Il. No other reason for this that I’m thirsty for this man. Amen.
- Byeon Woo Seok. He was great, and maybe he could have a drama where he does not meet a tragic ending.

The Glory
Tumblr media
This 16 episode-long series kept me hooked from beginning to end. My mom and I devoured it. It was hard to watch in many instances because it shows very violent bullying scenes among teens. And the audience can feel the desperation of the victims and the frustration when the adults don't help or those that want to help are taken out of the equation. It is one of the victims of this group of friends-bullies who decides to avenge all the damage these people did to her and other victims. Usually, in these kind of stories, revenge is executed following the law, but that's not necessarily the case in this series.
The Glory is about the anti-hero. Those that have been victims of abuse or a violent act, coming together and taking down those that hurt them in subtle ways. these people are broken and you can see it in their eyes and actions. The planning is brilliant but celebrating their glory is also kind of disturbing. It is paying violence with violence. But the audience sympathizes because those cruel teens are worse as adults, they don't feel remorse for what they did and they keep causing harm to others and therefore, you want justice to be served on them.
The storyline is very well developed, the characters as well. It is a good series to watch, but I would say that this one is for ages 16+ since, unlike most of the Korean dramas we are used to, this one has some graphic scenes scattered around.
Again, I recommend it.

PROJECT WOLF HUNTING (2022) ★★★★☆

Wedding Impossible
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Wedding Impossible (2024, South Korea)
Director: Kwon Young Il
Writers: Oh Hye Won & Park Seul Ki (based on the webtoon by Song Jung Won)
Mini-review:
Well, this drama was entertaining, but nothing more. It was especially funny at the beginning, thanks to that sort of 'rivalry' between the leads. However, once they solved that and started moving into purely romantic territory, the story began to lose steam quickly. Tbh, I kept watching to the very end because of the sizzling chemistry between Jeon Jong Seo and Moon Sang Min. And I guess I wanted to see how in the world they were gonna clear up the mess created by the characters, which was pretty fascinating. I feel like the show would have been better if the director had put more thought into its style, cause the whole thing looked pretty cheap and bland. But still, Wedding Impossible is fun enough, and I can see fans of classic romcoms enjoying it a lot.

The Glory
It's a sad revenge story that begins with a high school student who dreamed of becoming an architect. However, she had to drop out of school after suffering from brutal school violence. Years later, the perpetrator gets married and has a kid. Once the kid is in elementary school, the former victim becomes his homeroom teacher and starts her thorough revenge towards the perpetrators and bystanders of her bullying days.

Lie After Lie. 9
Story: 10
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 10
Comparable to: Secret (kdrama) ; Flower of Evil (kdrama)
A highly emotional rollercoaster border lining a wee lil bit on being over the top sometimes melodrama. It’s sooooooooooooo good though. I mean for me this is one of those hidden rare underrated gems that need to be hyped up more. I had no idea that it came out in 2020 being swept under the rug during the pandemic. It’s a very bing’ble show. Hell I almost watched the entire series in one setting. The entire cast did a remarkable amazing job, the ‘grandmother’ being played by her part brilliantly of one of the best villains, where you absolutely loathe her and cursing her left and right. Then to her opposite you have one of the best strong female leads I’ve seen in a long time played by Lee Yoo Ri (loved her equally in My Father is Strange) who kicked ass. I don’t know if I could’ve of gone through what she did as a character. She was dealt a bad hand in this one. Overall the drama is more intended for more of a maturer audience for its abusive themes and darker material. It really is well written and highly recommended.
