pluto in aquarius: a prediction of what's to come
this is a huge astrological event, pluto is moving into aquarius for the first time since the late 1700s. last time pluto was in aquarius america fought for independence from britain, uranus was discovered, the french revolution began, the bill of rights was ratified, etc.
so for day one, i want to create predictions of what is to come!
some house matters!!!
TWO PLUTO RETROGRADES WILL OCCUR - june 11th - jan 20th, 2024 is the first so we won't see too much wildness just yet as pluto will return into capricorn during this time and THE FINAL RETROGRADE BACK INTO CAPRICORN will be september 1st, 2024 - november 19th, 2024. then we are full steam ahead with pluto in aquarius until march 9th, 2043.
i personally am NOT a witch or anything wild, everything i am saying is purely theoretical - it is not fated to happen just because i am saying it. i am simply socially aware. i know what's up generally in the world today and what was up in world in the 1700s - "history typically repeats itself."
i live in the usa so my post likely will be slightly more focused there examples wise so i apologize in advance! feel free to comment, dm, or reblog with other examples from your country based on my prediction key phrases.
i am going to start light and get darker so mentally prepare yourself for that (tw: STI/STD outbreaks, war, 9/11, COVID-19, and other abrasive topics that may make people uncomfortable depending on where they are currently reading from) - but we are talking about pluto so... expect the unexpected?!
let's do this.
renewable energy sources
aquarius is electricity, light, inventions, electronics, telephones, televisions, etc while pluto can be change! i recently bought a new tv and the back of the remote has a solar panel instead of a battery pack. i do believe we will see more evolution with technology; perhaps we will see solar changed phones! otherwise pluto is also pollution and natural disasters - the climate is in crisis mode perhaps we will see more responsibility and thus changes in our sourcing of energy! example: recently i read that japan has a great source of geothermal energy. currently the conversion to using this source (instead of coal, gas, and nuclear energy) is being held up by a higher up in the hot spring business who claims switching to a new energy system "threatens centuries-old traditions" (bang - a capricorn term - tradition - so perhaps after the retrogrades are through we will see a major shift in energy sourcing).
general technological advancements/inventions
last time pluto was in aquarius the cotton gin was invented; which aided in quicker production of goods and higher demand for american cotton. i strongly believe this is a general indicator that AI is going to become an even bigger part of day to day life. i have seen AI already replace those who take orders in the panera drive thru, there is a higher demand for philosophy/english grads to help teach AI, etc. aquarius is also new teachers/occupations so AI could become the new teachers OR new careers could be coming in the area of interacting with AI generally so it gains more consciousness. so it could be AI or it could be something else that is only just a dream in the back of someone's mind at this moment in time.
altruistic extremists
we may see utopian dreamers rise up! they are likely to advocate for the deconstruction of pre-existing political institutions in favor of either self governance or egalitarian policies. they will likely do whatever it takes to make this statement; we may see more protests / political statements similar to wynn bruce's.
fanatical/extremist announcers radio/tv
we already have biased stations and channels (fox, abc, cnn, nbc, etc). we are likely to see a further rise in politically biased newscasters and announcers.
demonization of astrology
astrology is aquarian in nature but pluto is fanatics, evil, demonics, etc. the community has been saying about the next world war for a while now. we are moving out of conservative pluto in capricorn, so we may find that those of deep belief systems accusing us [astrologers] of conspiring with the devil if/when something militant arises (similar to how the tarot community gets told constantly by christians that they must be satanists).
something with birds
i don't have this nailed down yet specifically, but both aquarius and pluto are rulers of birds. aquarius is large birds while pluto is wading/swamp birds and/or flesh eating birds. no one freak out and start thinking that i am indicating something like the 1963 horror film the birds. if anything i can see more bird-spread illness and/or parasites. OR pluto can be archaeology! there may be a bird related discovery or something to do with the distant relative of the bird - aka the raptor (dinosaur related).
a new STI/STD discovery/outbreak
aquarius represents the distribution of bodily fluids while pluto is often representative of sexual activity. this could either be an outbreak because pluto can be death, extremes, catastrophes, and/or casualties OR pluto can be ph balance in the body (possible new discoveries for feminine sexual health), kidneys (perhaps a discovery will be linked to the diminished functionality associated with syphilis, hiv, etc and how to combat more symptomatic issues), and even purification (aka a cure perhaps to help viral carriers to no longer pass the sti/std to sexual partners).
collapse of congress / house of commons/representatives
i mean it only stands to reason that the bill of rights was created/approved last time pluto was in aquarius that either those rights will disappear (pluto also represents dictators) OR simply the people rise up and demolish the institution as it stands: "...whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government..."
airplane catastrophes
aquarius rules over planes and pluto can represent accomplices, catastrophes, casualties, b0mbs, and t3rr0r!sm. we may experience another event similar to 9/11 OR we may see air strikes in a potential world war 3 scenario.
societal change: crime, war, leadership, and more
world war 3 is on the horizon so say pluto in aquarius (probably in the wake of election year in the US - when the final retrograde into capricorn concludes). but this could also just be governmental restructuring - this could be seen as rebellions (similar to the French Revolution), the rise of organized crime if good become more scarce, religious shifts (pluto is the antichrist, aquarius is freewill (first amendment), and capricorn is the old church (christian schools of thought)), etc.
aquarian terms i can't think of change in but seem important to note / keep in mind: freethinkers, hamburg germany, heart weakness (biden - perhaps the early death of a president in office?), motion picture (already changing as more theaters close), photography, psychology (we are already starting to care more about everyone's mental health), science (general scientific discoveries?), social affairs (there is always something going on - the question is how big will this be?), society, sweden, syria, and xray.
plutonian terms i can't think of change in but seem important to note / keep in mind: abductions (aliens - ufo sights?), aliases, alibis (governmental riffing similar to how no plan was in place when for COVID-19), assass!nat!0n (hopefully not), betrayal, bootlegging (bootleg tiktok if america bans it?), cemeteries (removal of that method if too many are dying at any giving time - mass graves?), convicts (prison release due to overcrowding? the mega-prison of el salvador?), corruption (governmental likely?), demolitions, earthquakes (more environmental issues?), electrocution, executions (war?), fanatic, extremes, floods (environmental? emigration - society is aquarius after all?), liars, massacres (the rise of crime?), murder, nihilism (the rise of philosophy at the time of war?), ransom (war?), satire (rise of political satire?), stolen goods, and taxes (trump-esque no?).

"Come with me?"
Statement of Hallory Taller, regarding a person she met at a bus stop. Statement taken June 28th.
I want to preface I’ve never had hallucinations before this. I’m not on any medications, and I have a pretty clean medical history in terms of anything mental. I don’t know if what I saw was real, I only know that your.. institution is the only place that’ll somewhat believe me. I don’t know what she- it- they- what that person was, but I-
Right. From the beginning. Hold on.
I worked for a small company as a graphic designer when this took place. It was January 4, and I’d just been freed from a particularly unpleasant shift that day. There’d been a fight with my supervisor, I don’t want to get into details here..
Anyways, I usually take the bus home. I don’t live too far from the office, but it’s a quicker method than walking. The bus stop’s never crowded, and I’ve come to recognize the few people that take it. I couldn’t relay any of their names, of course, but I most of their faces are familiar to me. That day, the bus was- annoyingly- late, since it’s usually scheduled to show up at 19:05. So I waited, alone. None of the people I’ve come to recognize showed up that day, but it was none of my business to fret over it. I frankly didn’t care. I checked the time a couple times off my phone. It was about 19:15.
After not-too-long, a person walked up beside me. I’ve never seen her around the area, but the most likely assumption was that she was just new in town. I assumed she was here waiting for the bus. O-of course she was, that’s the point of a bus stop, but- I don’t know, something about her seemed.. wrong. She had orange hair, bright orange and the bottom half of her hair was very dark brown, and put up in a bun. Her clothes were casual, maybe a hawaiian shirt, I don’t remember. And I never really got a good look at her face, but oddly enough I do remember that she had long curly eyelashes, I can only describe as looking like a bug’s antenna.
I didn’t say anything to her when she first arrived, miffed as I was. But she turned to me, in an odd swift motion that made me feel dizzy, and asked where the bus was going. I didn’t hear her the first time, and she asked again. “Where is the bus going?”
I answered after the second time, Devon Street , and she looked.. no. No, I can’t.. I don’t think it was a smile. A butterfly landed on her face, even though I didn’t see it appear.
It was back to silence after that, thankfully. I just wanted the bus to get here quicker. Something about that stranger made me deeply uncomfortable, and the butterfly did. not. leave. I checked my phone again. A blurry, fluttering 19:15. Not a minute had passed. I felt dizzy. I stared at that screen for more than a minute, I know I did.. and it didn’t change.
"Is it late?” She asked me another question, which made me realize I was zoning out. I mumbled a half-assed response, and she shrugged. The motion was uncanny, like as she moved from one position to another, parts of her moved independently and rearranged to form the next. 19:15.
I think another 5 minutes of silence passed, as I compulsively checked my phone every 20 or so seconds. She didn’t talk or move- not in a way I recognized- standing beside me idly with an umbrella in her hand. I don’t remember her having that before, but I probably just didn’t realize until then. It was completely sunny out. Another butterfly landed on her shoulder. 19:15.
"Are you lost?” She asked after.. I don’t know how long, I lost track. It was still 19:15. No, of course not, I wanted to say, since I didn’t think I was. I’d always taken that bus. I’ve always used that bus stop. But it felt.. wrong, unfamiliar, now. A few butterflies landed on the sign beside me. She moved again, tilting her head in this taunting smile, with the same unnerving motion that nearly made me vomit. “Yes,” I told her.
She reached out a hand to me, and a butterfly landed on it. “Come with me?” Was her last question.
I reached.. to take her hand, but mine.. slipped through it. It wasn’t solid, no, a mass of butterflies mimicking the shape of a human hand. It fell apart in front of my eyes, into a dizzy swirl of confused insects, and I am not ashamed to admit that I screamed. She laughed, her mouth splitting open as the lepidoptera that made up her face fluttered to form a smile.
I abandoned that stupid bus stop, turning on my heel and booking it down the road. I didn’t care, I just wanted to get home. Away from that. That.. thing. Things. By the time I’d made it to my front door, tired, sweaty, a little nauseous, I checked my phone again. It was 19:16.
I don’t take the bus stop anymore. I’ve just been saying that it’s easier to walk home, that I need more exercise, but.. I’m worried I’ll meet that person again. I still see butterflies on the sign when I walk past it.

At the end of March, Germany's Environment Minister Steffi Lemke of the Green Party used just a few words to put an end to the dispute that has kept the country in suspense for years: "The risks of nuclear power are ultimately uncontrollable; that's why the nuclear phase-out makes our country safer, and avoids more nuclear waste."
Nuclear power extended to April 15
Last year, the government found itself once again caught up in a dispute over nuclear power. In their coalition agreement, the governing SPD, Greens, and the FDP had agreed to stick to Germany's nuclear phase-out, which was decided under Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2011. Accordingly, the last nuclear power plants were to close at the end of 2022.
But Russia's invasion of Ukraine changed everything, because Russian gas supplies to Germany stopped and the government feared an energy shortage. Chancellor Olaf Scholz finally decided to extend the operating period of the power stations until April 15, 2023.
A decades-long dispute
Few disputes have polarized people, especially in the former West Germany, for as many decades as the one over nuclear power. On June 17, 1961, a German nuclear power plant supplied electricity to the grid for the first time, at Kahl in Bavaria.
Some 22,596 days and plenty of heated debate later, the last three German nuclear power plants still in operation will finally be shut down on April 15.
Altogether, 19 nuclear power plant units supplied up to a third of the country's electricity, though the last time this happened was about 20 years ago. In the 1970s and 1980s in West Germany, before German unification, opposition to nuclear power brought hundreds of thousands of mostly young people out onto the streets. Then in 1986, the Chernobyl disaster in the then-Soviet Union appeared to confirm warnings about the dangers of nuclear power. But the various governing parties – the conservative Christian Democrats (CDU), the SPD, and the FDP – stood firmly behind the use of nuclear power for many decades.
Nuclear power in Europe
Other European countries were quicker to phase out nuclear power. Sweden was the forerunner, ending nuclear power shortly after Chernobyl, as was Italy, which also decided to close its last two nuclear power plants following the disaster. In Italy, the decision remained in force; in Sweden, the phase-out was reversed in 1996. Today, six nuclear power plants there produce around 30% of the country's electricity needs.
Other European countries, such as the Netherlands and Poland plan to expand their nuclear power systems, while Belgium is postponing its planned phase-out. With 57 reactors, France has always been Europe's leading nuclear power country, and it intends to stay that way. All in all, 13 of 27 EU countries intend using nuclear power in the coming years, with a number expanding their capacities.
First German phase-out in 2002
In 2002, Germany's then Environment Minister Jürgen Trittin, also of the Green Party, pushed through the country's first plan to phase out nuclear power. This was then softened by subsequent governments, but the horrific reactor disaster at Fukushima in Japan in 2011 finally sealed the fate of German nuclear power plants. The chancellor at the time, Angela Merkel (CDU), decided: That was it for nuclear energy in Germany.
Today, Trittin is still a member of the Bundestag for the Green Party. "Yes, this is an important day, because it brings a story to an end, namely that of the civilian use of nuclear energy," he said of this week's final shutdown. "But it's not the end of nuclear energy in Germany, we're still dealing with the fact that we'll have to safely store the world's most dangerous waste for a million years," he told DW.
Arguments for nuclear energy
But is this really it for nuclear energy in Germany? KernD, an association representing the interests of nuclear technology in Germany, told DW that ending nuclear power was not a good idea, in view of an energy crisis that it says has been suppressed, rather than resolved.
"Also, in view of climate policy and the very unfavorable development in electricity generation last year — due to a sharp increase in coal-fired power generation — the shutdown of three functioning nuclear power plants with a low greenhouse gas footprint beggars belief," a KernD spokesperson said.
"Considering security of supply, environmental and climate protection, as well as competitiveness, more nuclear power would make more sense than none at all."
Nuclear power around the world
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), there are currently 422 nuclear reactors in operation worldwide, with an average age of about 31 years.
But a recent IAEA report said there was no indication that nuclear was experiencing a renaissance: Nuclear power generation peaked at 17.5% in 1996, and fell below 10% in 2021 — the lowest in four decades.
Asia expands its nuclear capacity
Nevertheless, China, Russia and India in particular are all planning to build new nuclear power plants. China, where there is virtually no civil society to fight new projects, wants to build another 47 plants. China already produces more nuclear power than France.
It is often argued that expanding nuclear power production protects the climate because it emits hardly any carbon dioxide. Even Japan wants to return to more nuclear power, despite the 2001 earthquake that caused several nuclear reactors to rupture in succession, forcing the initial closure of several nuclear power plants.
Since then, however, some reactors have been brought back online. Now the Japanese government has decided: The resource-poor country wants to build new reactors and let its old ones run for up to 70 years. "We must make full use of nuclear energy," Prime Minister Fumio Kishida declared recently, as if it were his motto. Surveys show that, despite a long period of resistance, support among the Japanese population is gradually increasing.
And Jürgen Trittin notes that no one wants to invest in nuclear power on a large scale "because nuclear power is not competitive." Building new nuclear power plants is very expensive, often having to be co-financed by public money, and often plagued by delays and local resistance to new projects.

There's never a dull day in this fandom.
And honestly I hate daemi, they are creepy and high on popularity, even if that popularity comes from the series' script and impeccable acting jobs and not their book.
I still don't understand how the kinnporsche novel got famous but it somehow did, but they should just sit down and let P'Pond and P'Apo deal with script of the show.
Also a reason why I hate them is because they remind me of things I normalised back in middle school as a kid who stumbled on mature stuff quicker and had messed up ideals about romance. While I did manage to grow up and shed that skin before hitting 20, the daemi duo clearly did not and also, not the major part of bl fandom in Thailand and hence why daemi still remains toxic actively and gives me headaches.
These two adults need to grow up, from a 20yo to clearly at least a 30yo duo (I assume; not sure abt their age but they are clearly older). They remind me of my cousins who still find Twilight and fifty shades Trilogy peak romance.
I really hope that BOC doesn't need any further legal work for getting S2 rights

I have seen that tiktok on a bunch of different sources now and while I agree with the main point (some “in my Fleabag era” posts really brush over or even glorify mental illness and unhealthy behaviour) and hence won’t link the video here, I am still sure that neither the ill-advised “in my Fleabag era” posters nor the girl in the video have actually watched the show, beyond some clips or gifsets.
Fleabag does not glorify its protagonist nor her bad decisions.
Yes, the media LAUNCHED itself at the promiscuity and the raunchiness and yes, it literally starts with an elaborate and dirty anal joke. But like I’ve never said in the essay I will definitely post one day on how comparing Fleabag to that other brilliant show by the other highly lauded female British show runner makes no sense since they’re fundamentally different in many important aspects and yet people still kept doing it in the tag all the time which led me to block a ton of mofos: The beauty of the first season of Fleabag is that it pretends to be one of those cheeky, funny, troubled-but-nice girl shows for like two minutes, then the cracks start coming in.
Her whole speech on sex while she’s on the toilet? Yes, it’s delivered with a smile and a wink, nudge-nudge haha, look at the funny woman talking about sex so frankly, but actually listen to what she says and tell me that this is meant to be healthy in any way. By the time the big reveal hits at the end of the first episode, it should be clear that this isn’t really a comedy. I’ve been a bit slow on it too, other people figured out what the scenes with Boo were quicker, but at that point the latest it breaks with the typical format.
I’ve been saying this a lot, but Fleabag Season 1 isn’t a comedy, it’s a very funny tragedy. She does a ton of fucked-up things and they eventually catch up to her and ruin her. This may be relatable af, but it’s not something to model your life after nor does the show say it is. Fleabag is deeply flawed and the show never pretends otherwise. Season 2 is about partially fixing these flaws, about building yourself up again and learning to deal with things you cannot change anymore and how life and love goes on.
Quite a few people who joke about being “in their Fleabag era” understood that and their posts are meant to be read this way. Others didn’t and I think it’s fair to point that out, but it’s not the show’s fault. Fleabag’s failures aren’t shown as something you’d want to experience, nor as something light and cool.

Explaining the difference between 4D and 5D reality.
4D (density) is the next step outside of your current 3D reality. You can think of your current reality as a cube and the next step as the tesseract. It happens in your mind first, which then starts to shape your surrounding reality. Its a dimension that co-exist with the reality everyone is already experiencing, they just can't perceive it (yet).
Ascension/Rapture only happens on an individual basis. If you're waiting around on a savior or one mass wave or aliens beaming you up. Its not going to ever happen.
Even the aliens are bound by the laws of God. Which means they can't infringe on our rights/free will or free choice to choose to ascend. They must operate outside of our perception indirectly, just as God does.
If you've been waiting for something to happen in regards to ascension or rapture I recommend stop waiting. It will never happen globally.
I managed to ascend into 4D multiple times over the years. Finally in 2024 I am able to hold onto 4D permanently. Needless to say it is extremely hard and took me about 2 1/2 decades (24 years) of practice/learning/constantly searching, etc.
Once you are in 4D you are then able to start stepping into 5D. 5D for me is exactly like how it was for me from 3D to 4D. I can't hold onto 5D for very long. I managed to hold onto it for a few weeks on this last planetary alignment in June 2024.
The main difference between 4D and 5D is your belief in yourself. Of course you have an insane belief in your creative abilities in 4D, but you are still victim of your 3D doubts/insecurities.
In 5D you are creating magic with every step you take. So its harder for doubts about yourself to come into your mind. Your basically able to bend the laws of reality to your will much much easier.
The problem with 5D is it feels like fire on the inside of your body. While also simultaneously being weighed down by gravity. It can be a very unpleasant feeling if you're not strong mentally and physically. I am still getting used to the feeling and it usually will make me not be able to move like I am heavily sedated.
It bounces around from heavy sedation which makes it hard to work, to a heavy pull to move and work. I prefer the pull to move and work more so than the heavy sedation.
In Toiletology we call this high the SAUCE, SPICE, SLACK, SCENT, ACE, AMBROSIA, NECTAR, LOOSH, etc. It basically shows you, you are in perfect harmony with the one true creator of reality. It feels like you are a fully fed energetic vampire aka E-Vampgelical. (good vamp, not a bad one) Side note I did have my incisors shaved down when I was 19 because they were too vampiric looking.
Whatever 4D/5D muscle that is inside of us maybe the Pineal gland, tho it feels like a full body muscle that doesn't exist. Mine is still fairly weak and I am still working on developing it so it can handle the gravity/weight of it better .
5D for me right now is basically trying to catch the next celestial wave and learning to ride that wave as long as I can. When I'm riding this wave perfectly I can accomplish goals and create at a much more rapid rate. Ideas flow crystal clear, I can basically learn at a faster speed and figure out solutions to my problems much quicker. My intelligence is also a lot higher maybe even double what it is on average.
What everyone needs to realize is that we are already in heaven/hell here on Earth. The Garden of Eden is all around us. This human meat suit we call our bodies is made out of light and sound. Closer to to body/spirit/soul. This matter or material is nothing more than a holo-fractal illusion.
Once you realize this truth you realize you have the powers of God inside of you waiting to be unlocked. You don't need any mass awakening or savior figure to come save you.

Pirates rising star pitcher Anthony Solometo makes history, being the youngest player ever in Double AA, is this a sign of a new trend?

Altoona, PA — 21-year-old starting pitcher Anthony Solometo came into the 2023 season just looking to make strides in his game. A year later he made history becoming the youngest player to make a Double AA opening day lineup.
Solometo made the jump to Double AA Altoona last season on June 17, 2023, after dominating High-A Greensboro. Many organizations take their time with young rising stars, especially pitchers, but the Pirates felt Solometo was ready. The then 20-year-old came in and threw 51.2 innings across 12 games for the Curve, almost leading them to a playoff berth. He returned to Altoona for the 2024 season, which was not a surprise to him, but the news of his new record was.
BSB Writes writer and Altoona Curve season ticket holder Jay Staph has watched Solometo’s progress on and off the field since his June promotion and has been pleased with the results.
“He's ahead of the competition in almost every way. I've often seen him dominate hitters who are way older than him already," Staph stated.
The biggest question for teams when they have to decide to promote their young prospects is how this will affect the player in the long term and if the success and health of the player stay intact. One team in a similar boat is the Baltimore Orioles.
High-A Aberdeen IronBirds broadcaster Michael Marcantonini experienced then-19-year-old former first overall pick Jackson Holliday for the first half of the 2023 season. Holliday is the son of former Major League Baseball outfielder Matt Holliday and just recently made his MLB debut on April 10, 2024. At only twenty years old, many eyes started to wonder if this was the new norm.
“The guys that move quickly through the minor leagues these days are guys with legitimate star potential that have multiple tools that can help an MLB team win games,” Marcantonini explains. “I think organizations are willing to bet on their young stars figuring it out in the big leagues and finishing their development at the highest level, instead of keeping them down in the minors for more seasoning.”
Not all players grow up with former MLB all-stars as dads and know what a big league locker room and environment are like, but players like Solometo know what it takes to achieve a lifelong goal.
For lifelong Pittsburgh Pirates fan Ben Majcher, is just happy to know his favorite team is making strides and history with their young talent. He recognizes the difference between rushing a player and realizing when they are ready.
“I’m glad to see players so young getting a chance at higher levels. The Pirates aren’t rushing their prospects even though they are moving quickly,” Majcher exclaims.
One big reason why these young stars continue to come up quicker and quicker is from a new rule implemented before the 2023 season. The rule, Prospect Promotion Incentives (PPI), states that players eligible for Rookie of the Year votes and wins will earn their team an extra draft pick the following season.
“The possibility of earning a compensation draft pick incentives organizations to bring prospects up quicker too. It also varies by organization and what the state of a franchise is, whether a team is a contender or in a rebuilding/retooling phase, and what their short-term and long-term positional needs are,” Marcantonini explains.
Another reason that goes hand in hand with PPI is how fast the development and scouting of these players have changed over the last ten years or so.
“When it comes to younger players in baseball, the skill level of these players is something we've never seen before.” Staph continued, “10 years ago, someone who could regularly throw 95+ in the majors was unheard of, but in today's game, we can see that in high school. I think this is sustainable, especially since players are being scouted younger than ever before.”
With the ever-changing game ahead, players must be aware that their time could be coming sooner than they ever expected. Teammates of Solometo just last season have already made their debuts but that does not worry Anthony in the slightest.

A lame carriage-horse delays the exploring party to Box Hill. Mrs. Elton seizes at Mr. Knightley’s wry invitation to Donwell for a strawberry-picking party.
We know that this occurs in “the middle of June” (p. 231).
Readings and Interpretations
For Want of a Nail
Pat Rogers notes the importance of horses in Austen’s England, despite the inconvenience and expense occasioned by them causing water transport to be cheaper and quicker: “the horse served in the office of car, lorry, tractor, traction engine, moped, racing bike, pet and friend. It was employed by couriers, mailmen and highway robbers. As well as hauling barges, it bore hearses, ambulances, fire-engines, state coaches; and it carried its owner's hopes on the race course and in the hunting field” (p. 428). Horses’ ubiquity is reflected and sometimes played off of in Austen’s works: “We take little notice of the horses in Austen’s novels, but they are there, unobtrusive and essential, as they were in everyone’s lives. A lame carriage-horse delays the trip to Box Hill (E, 3:6), one of a number of strategic deferrals which build up expectations in this book” (ibid). Similarly, James Carson writes of this as the first in a series of examples of how, “[t]oward the end of the novel, Austen structures the very plot on the health and reliability of horses” (p. 176).
Making an Ass of U and Me
This section contains another example of the relationship between ideas and everyday practicalities in what Pam Morris terms “Mrs Elton’s Marie Antoinette posturing in wishing to ride to the strawberry-picking at Donwell on a donkey”:
Mrs Elton’s desire for a donkey as symbol of Arcadian simplicity provides a wonderfully comic image, yet it is typical of Austen’s materialist psychology. Idealist assertions of the mental realm as the primary reality are undercut in her novels as objects persistently point to the way things are required to give substance to the immaterial. Things, in Austen’s texts, demonstrate the necessary interdependence of the subjective and the objective, the idealist and the empirical. We know ourselves, even our interiority, through our interaction with things. […] In this way, Austen’s realism brings to notice a field of visibility—the materiality of human life […]. (p. 93)
Janet Todd points out that, in reality, the donkeys of Jane Austen’s day were “servicable beasts,” and her house in Chawton maintained two: Mrs. Elton’s donkeys, however, are “part of her pastoral kitsch. She has led up to them through her variety of props, her floppy hats, baskets and pink ribbons; the donkeys come in with the ‘caro sposo’” (p. 19). Mr. Knightley responds with the opinion that “‘[t]he nature and the simplicity of gentlemen and ladies, with their servants and furniture, I think is best observed by meals within doors’” (p. 232). But, though Mrs. Elton’s “play-acting in the strawberry beds, if it came off, would not be entirely genteel,” instead “partak[ing] of the anxiety, the uneasy make-believe of the tourist who is not at home in the real world of the country house” (pp. 19–20), Todd sees Knightley’s response as culpable as well:
The Englishman dislikes the pastoral, associated as it was with the doomed French Marie Antoinette and her play-acting as shepherdess at the Trianon hameau with her perfumed sheep […]. Mr. Knightley dislikes this frivolous, perhaps aristocratic, perhaps French falsity. He fears an outdoor lapse of civility if they move from the ordered space of the civilizing dining room with ladies, gentlemen and servants, to a less controlled but equally owned outside arena. But Mr. Knightley himself falls short of another standard, the gentlemanly civility of a less socially anxious age than his own. For in this scene, Mr. Knightley becomes just as rude as Mrs. Elton—and more intentionally so. Indeed it is a recurring aspect of this landowner’s character: he fails often to converse as he ought […]. In opposition to the French, the English liked to associate themselves, with bluff sincerity […]. Mrs. Elton calls Mr. Knightley a humorist; in fact, he is at times simply boorish and insularly proud of being so. (p. 20)
Devoney Looser places more emphasis on the humorousness of Mrs. Elton’s imagined scene:
In encouraging Mrs. Elton to follow her heart and arrive on a donkey—imagining that she will put Jane and Miss Bates on them, too—Mr. Knightley invites his other would-be guests (and Austen’s actual readers, of course) to a campy, circus-like show. Austen, through Knightley, compels us to entertain comic visions of Mrs. Elton’s excesses. […] His line, “I would wish every thing to be as much to your taste as possible,” seems designed for the observant reader’s laughter.
The wished-for donkey scene never materializes, but the conversation encourages readers to conjure up the image: Mrs. Elton, with her entourage, would ride in to the party on an ass, as her caro-sposo husband promenades beside her like a groom, twice over. The conjured scene mimics an arrival into Bethlehem, although Mr. and Mrs. Elton are no biblical Mary and Joseph. That Mrs. Elton would also put Jane and Miss Bates on donkeys offers up a further outlandish biblical approximation. It’s hardly Three Wise Women arriving to pay homage. The narrator suggests that, as much as Mrs. Elton’s ridiculous plan would annoy Mr. Knightley, it would also delight his dry, blunt sense of humor. So this conjured scene would—or should—both annoy and delight the astute reader of Austen. Mrs. Elton’s performing the role of a coddled, wealthy, fashionable Virgin Mary, with Mr. Elton as her sycophantic, accompanying spouse-groom (to an ass no less) is campy-priceless. (pp. 6–7)
Lady Patroness
David Monaghan, who argues that Emma dramatizes the proper assumption on the part of Emma and Mr. Knightley of social and moral authority, writes that “[t]he visit to Donwell marks a further stage in Emma’s reassessment of her role in the Highbury community”:
Like balls at the Crown, excursions to Donwell are not a part of the normal pattern of Highbury life. Mr Woodhouse has not been there for two years, and even the more energetic Emma has been absent for long enough to be ‘eager to refresh and correct her memory’ [vol. 3, ch. 6 [42]; p. 234]. Thus, although the gathering of a few friends to pick strawberries and eat lunch cannot match a ball for excitement, the mere fact that it does happen is an important sign that Highbury is becoming less set in its ways. Indeed, in at least one sense, the visit augurs even better than the ball for the future of the village because it offers clear evidence that Mr Knightley is prepared to take on fully the active moral role that he played briefly at the Crown.
Whereas he was most unwilling to participate in the ball, Mr Knightley now becomes an initiator of social activity. Mrs Elton’s reaction to the cancellation of her visit to Box Hill makes it obvious to Mr Knightley that she is likely to come up with an extremely improper scheme by way of compensation. To avoid this he offers her an alternative form of amusement in the shape of a strawberry-picking party in the grounds of his house, thereby ensuring that her restless energies will be placed under his personal control. The success of Mr Knightley’s manoeuvre is evident in the prompt and firm way he is able to check Mrs Elton’s attempts to be ‘Lady Patroness’: [quotes from “‘It is my party’” to “‘I will manage such matters myself,’” pp. 231–2]. (pp. 134–5)
For Monaghan, then, Mr. Knightley’s invitation is part of a deliberate plan.
Mrs. Elton’s insistence that she is “Lady Patroness” is, of course, just what we expect from her at this point. Morris writes:
The Woodhouses are ‘first in consequence’ in their community due to birthright. They represent neither new money nor new blood, Emma takes pride in thinking. What infuriates Emma is that Mrs Elton utterly refuses to give place or recognition to the old hierarchy of rank upon which Emma relies. ‘I am Lady Patroness, you know. It is my party’, Mrs Elton informs Mr Knightley in regard to the strawberry-gathering at Donwell [p. 231]. She graciously bestows her favour upon Mr Woodhouse, this ‘dear old beau of mine’, and Mrs Weston, ‘I was rather astonished to find her so very lady-like! But she is really quite the gentlewoman’ [vol. 2, ch. 17 [35], p. 197; ch. 14 [32], pp. 180]. By thus sweeping everyone in Highbury into her condescending bestowal of recognition, she magnifies her own imagined idea of self as measured by the extent of her social dominion. Mrs Elton is one of those many characters in Austen’s fiction whose representation seems strikingly to dramatise self as factitious; yet it is a performance driven by embodied needs and passions. Mrs Elton’s discourse resembles a torrent of egoistic energy that sweeps all topics into the vortex of her sense of self-importance. (p. 98)
There is an obvious satire against Mrs. Elton in the statement that her “resources were inadequate to such an attack” as a delay of her outing. Sara Bowen points out the irony:
Whatever his other foibles, Mr. Elton has warned Augusta Hawkins about her possible loneliness in Highbury. Augusta insists that “‘the world I could give up—parties, balls, plays—for I had no fear of retirement. Blessed with so many resources within myself, the world was not necessary to me’” [vol. 2, ch. 14 [32]; p. 179]. Mr. Elton is right in his assessment: Augusta is frantic for the Donwell outing because she “only wanted to be going somewhere” (354); she needs a donkey because “‘it is not possible for her to be always shut up at home’” [p. 233]. (p. 113)
A Real Prince
Colleen Sheehan argues that Emma contains “barbs and innuendoes aimed squarely at the irresistibly large target of the Prince [of Wales, George Augustus Frederick],” who had a reputation for profligacy, debauchery, and self-indulgence. The al fresco dining Mrs. Elton proposes in this section, to the subtle mockery of Mr. Knightley, is one such barb:
If Mrs. Elton, the self-proclaimed “Lady Patroness” of Highbury society, were to have her way, Mr. Knightley’s midsummer’s eve strawberry party, like the Box Hill outing the next day, would be entirely under her direction. In perfectly picturesque fashion, she would have them be a “‘sort of gipsy party,’” with the ladies wearing large bonnets and little baskets hanging on their arms, and everyone coming on donkeys to enjoy a picnic out of doors. Mrs. Elton’s scheme is very much like an actual party held in honor of the Prince Regent’s birthday on 12 August 1811, recorded in the Sussex Weekly Advertiser, replete with hats, baskets, a cold picnic, and donkeys. It too was “a gipsey party,” though it did not take place on Box Hill. Instead, it occurred at Bexhill: “The Prince Regent’s birth day was this year celebrated by the principal inhabitants of Bexhill, in rather a novel manner, by forming themselves into a GIPSEY PARTY. Early in the morning all was bustle—donkies, carts, old wigs, cloaks, hats, &c. &c. were put in requisition, and about eleven o’clock the party, (nearly all in some appropriate character) moved in procession, attended by a great concourse of spectators, to Coden Down, about three miles off, where tents were immediately pitched; an elegant cold PIC NIC collation, from the baskets of the party, was set forth on the grass, and very heartily partaken of. . . . [W]hen the whole party retired, very much gratified with the novel diversion, [they] unanimously agree[d that] the anniversary of their beloved Prince’s Birth-day shall be FOREVER celebrated at Bexhill, in a similar manner.” (n.p.)

It wasn’t your first time visiting the Room of Hidden Things—it might’ve been your third in that week alone—but you still haven’t gotten used to seeing it instead of the training room. You were immediately greeted by stacks upon stacks of various objects that seemed both scattered yet arranged. The piles were tall, but you could still see its peaks if you tilted your neck. You cautiously walked down the path that mazed through the room, careful not to accidentally nudge anything as you did the nights before.
The object you sought sat right where you left it, obscured from plain sight beneath a veil of black and blue. You tugged the sheet off with ease.
The first thing you noticed was the unlocked notch of the cabinet—a sign that someone had opened it between the last time you used it and now. You felt yourself go cold, the feeling of paranoia that you’ve been found out comes back and this time, it stays in the form of quivers and doubts. Your breaths slowly came quicker, oxygen entering your system in abnormal intervals that made your head feel light. Your mind was clouded in thoughts—when, where, how?
Either way, it was too late now—both for you to back out and for them to evade the impending doom looming over them.
“Is that the reason why you started getting distant in the past year, _____?”
You see your hand visibly quiver upon hearing the familiar voice that echoed the room. You had your wand at the ready, pointing it at the black wooden doors of the Vanishing Cabinet. The words you needed to utter to activate it were at the tip of your tongue, but they died down in the presence of someone else. You couldn’t bring yourself to say it..
You didn’t have to turn to recognize who the question came from. His voice was something you would recognize anywhere. Having heard it so much in the year prior, it was almost impossible not to.
His footsteps drew closer, thumping on the marble floor and echoing all around you. You tried your best to remain calm, even when your heart was threatening to leap out of your ribcage. He stepped out of the shadows before stopping a few crates away from you. His face was illuminated by the light at the tip of his wand.
“You have no business here, Han Jisung.”
There was a tinge of coldness in both your voices that would lead anyone into thinking you’ve both been sworn enemies right from the start. But you recalled how his was once warm as it uttered witty jokes at the back of the class, as it whispered sweet nothings in your ear that slowly chipped away at every wall you raised around you.
