It was a record shattering week at ActBlue – the site which raises money for Democratic candidates, causes, and charities.

Since autumn of 2020 Ryan Murphy at GitHub has been tracking donations to ActBlue. The most money previously given to ActBlue had previously been during the seven days starting 27 September 2020. Last week ActBlue raised $252,517,168. All but the first 13 hours and 46 minutes of that was after Joe Biden stepped aside and Kamala Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Not ALL of the money raised at ActBlue was specifically for the Harris campaign. But comparison with the previous week (beginning 14 July 2024) shows that Kamala-Mania was a HŪGE factor.

July 21th - July 27th: $252,517,168

US: Kamala Harris campaign raises $200 million in one week

The presumptive nomination of Vice President Kamala Harris to run for the Democratic Party in November's presidential election continues to make waves in US politics. The Harris campaign team said on Sunday that in her first week since President Joe Biden dropped out of the race, and the party coalesced around her, the candidate raised over $200 million (€184 million) in donations. "In the week since we got started, Kamala Harris has raised $200 million dollars. 66% of that is from new donors. We've signed up 170,000 new volunteers," Harris' deputy campaign manager, Rob Flaherty, posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Keep in mind that Elon Putz has pledged $45 million a month to pro-MAGA PACs – i.e. $225 million. Trump is soliciting $1 billion from oil execs. Far right Silicon Valley tech oligarchs like Peter Thiel are also getting involved financially with Trump.

So there's no time to rest on our accomplishments. Freedom is not free and we need to continue to offer our own volunteer and financial support to pro-democracy candidates like Kamala Harris.

In 2020 there was a stretch when ActBlue took in over $100 million for eight weeks in a row. That's part of what it took to evict Trump from the White House. A similar effort will be needed this year to keep him out.

We will perhaps commiserate over things and also I will aggravate my carpal tunnel! I will ask for advice on things I don't know how to do! At the time of writing it is September 18, 2024, also known as 98 days before Christmas Eve, which will heretofore be known as The Deadline™️. I have, at present, four family members for whom I am making gifts. Now you may be thinking "Kay, that's only four people. That does not warrant a big post." But I'm making one anyway so here we goooo

Mom. I already decided on my mom's gift, she's getting a shawl. It's my first shawl and I'm kinda geeked about it. It's the Cosmos Textured Knit Wrap from Mama in a Stitch

Yarn is Red Heart worsted weight acrylic in Royal. Now here's the situation: I haven't made a wearable with acrylic yarn in awhile and I wasn't a huge fan of how it felt last time. But I know people do it literally every day, so: when the time comes I will be soliciting advice on how to make it soft and comfy. Plus I hate blocking and I'm gonna have to block this so yay growth!!

My sister. Adorable, likes a pastel, super long hair, so I was thinking...scrunchies? And then I was thinking scrunchies are not necessarily on the level of gift I was aiming for so I thought...scrunchies + matching leg warmers (babydoll goes to the gym sometimes so i thought it would be cute)? And then. AND THEN. Was scrolling Pinterest instead of sleeping and I found these!!!

My brother. So, at the first of the year I started knitting a blanket kind of just because--I really liked the pattern and I wanted the feeling of starting something new in the new year. In April I decided it would be a gift for my boyfriend at the time, in May it became too hot to knit with wool, and in July the relationship ended. My brother has expressed interest in a blanket from the same pattern and has offered to take this one off my hands. I'm about 3/4 of the way done. Should be an easy gift, right? Maybe I'll throw in a matching pillow?

However, I once promised to make him this sweater:

I bought the pattern, I bought the yarn, and I never delivered. (I started it and frogged it twice because my gauge was so so off.)

So uhhh PLEASE do the poll I need help deciding. Yarn would probably be a golden yellow wool blend, because that is the color he wanted 3 years ago and if I ask for an updated color choice he'll know what I'm working on 😭

So I was thinking slippers-- I found a pattern for Woodland Loafers on Ravelry (pattern by Claire Slade) and I thought they were adorable. But then I was thinking why not make a whole, like, cozy care package? So I thought slippers, mug rug + mug cozy, maybe something else? He likes music, he likes to relax and watch his lil shows, he likes M*rvel?? Open to so many suggestions babes.

Placebo Effect!

(Inspired by the terrible headache I had this morning. July 24, 2024 — Wednesday.)

"Uhh, I can't take this anymore...", Eugene's voice was intertwined with pain.

"It will be okay, Eugene", Rapunzel condolenced him. He has been sick from yesterday night. Fever, and headache had confined him to bed. Besides, throwing up all night soaked the last bit of his energy. He seemed fine even in the afternoon yesterday; only thing he complained about was a little headache and then...no, he didn't tell Rapunzel. Maximus sensed first that something was wrong as he was night guarding the corridor and heard groaning from the bedroom of the former thief. In the morning, Max basically pulled Rapunzel toward his room to only discover he was lying on the bed helplessly groaning out of pain and uncomfortableness. Then he threw up in front of her, after giving a soulless smile to his sunshine.

"I'm here, everything's gonna be alright." She assured him again.

"Oh", Eugene could only utter pinching the bridge of his nose.

Rapunzel pulled his hair gently to relieve the headache after kissing his forehead. "Cassandra went to Xavier to bring medicine for you. Only about 10 minutes, and you will be fine." She told him.

"I can't, I can't, I'm dying." Eugene said, groaning, moving restlessly on the bed. Tears started gathering at the corner of his eyes.

"No, you're not, nothing will happen to you, Eugene. Look, I'm taking all your pains", Rapunzel said after touching her head to his.

She looked at the door as she heard the footsteps of the lady in waiting.

"Here, feed him two spoons three times a day after meal." Cassandra spoke.

"Thank you, Cass. But he hasn't eaten anything yet." Rapunzel said.

"Ugh... okay, sit here. I'm bringing something for him." Cassandra left to the kitchen.

"I can't believe she's doing all these things for me!" Eugene said with his soulless voice.

"What do you think she is? Heartless?" Rapunzel asked, raising one eyebrow.

"Yes!", Eugene replied immediately.

"Eugene!", Rapunzel scolded him.

"Are you feeling better now, Fitzherbert?" Cassandra asked as it's been a while he took the medicine.

"No.. not really...", Eugene threw up again, thus couldn't finish his sentence. "It's hurting like hell", he tried speaking again.

"He's burning up, Cass", Rapunzel expressed her worry to Cassandra.

"It will take a while to recover", Cassandra said, "he only has a single dose as of now." She explained further. "Raps, I have chores to do, I'm going. If you need anything, call me via Faith. Don't worry, Xavier said he will be okay after taking three doses." She rushed to outside of the room after assuring the princess.

Meanwhile, Eugene became almost senseless due to the weakness and pain.

"Hey, it's gonna be alright." Rapunzel caressed his forehead.

"Flower gleam and glow, let your power shine. Make the clock reverse, bring back what once was mine. Heal what has been hurt, change the fates' design. Save what has been lost, bring back what once was mine, what once was mine." She whispered the healing incantation to his ear, although there's no healing magic left inside her body anymore.

"Rapunzel, please, never leave me!" Eugene murmured.

"Why would I leave you?", Rapunzel was surprised at his sudden solicitation.

"Rapunzel, I've never been taken care of like this before. I'd rather been scolded if I got ill as if I committed a sin. I couldn't spare a rest even if I was badly inneeded of one. I can't express in words, how it feels to be taken care of with so much love. Rapunzel, please, never leave me, or I'll be alone, again. There won't be anyone to take care of me when I am sick."

"Aww... I'll never leave you Eugene. I promise." She kissed him on the forehead.

"I love you with my everything." He said.

"I love you too!" She said in response.

"Rapunzel, I think you still have the magic, I'm feeling better now." Eugene said weakly.

"I think it's some sort of placebo effect." Cassandra said thoughtfully. It didn't take till the third dose, Eugene recovered just after taking his very first dose of the medicine.

"Plasi...what?" Rapunzel asked.

"Placebo effect... your song doesn't possess any healing quality but still it worked because he believes it works! And Xavier's medication accelerated the healing process." Cassandra explained.

"Oh, I really thought I had my power back! Anyway, don't tell it to him. I think he'll get sick again if he hear this!" Rapunzel said biting her lower lip.

Hi, thanks for asking.

I don't know if there are any plans to limit the number of copies. As I wrote before, I'm not running the show here.

Yes, the project won't be out until next summer.

This may seem like a long time, but really it's not. If you've already considered this, my apologies for explaining, but others may appreciate the info.

While I've been working on the book for months - way before the Kickstarter was announced - there is still a lot to do. We need a cushion of time in there so if anything major goes wrong, there are options.

I will be working on a number of pages which will incorporate faces of Kickstarter supporters in certain scenes. This will not interfere with the look or feel of the book in any way, but it is going to take some time.

We are adding more story pages to the book. This is going to take time.

There are a LOT of extra products to manufacture and package. This is going to take LOTS of time.

The final printing and shipping will take months. It's not at all unusual to require a 6 month lead between final production and arrival in bookstores, especially with paper shortages.

If this book were being produced by a major publisher, it would take even longer to come out.

At a major publisher, the book sits in editorial for what seems like an age, then gets put into a catalogue for the next season solicitations where orders are taken and print runs are set based on those orders.

And a lot of that time would not necessarily be given to the artist to write and draw the book: you can find horror stories from many graphic novelists working for big publishing companies where only a small fraction of production was allowed for the artist to write and draw the book: the rest of the time was eaten by negotiations, administration, and editorial. I've done the vast majority of more than one graphic novel in just a few months. It's not fun.

Thanks to Kickstarter support, this is also going to be a deluxe hardcover with gold and red foil, slipcase, bookmark ribbon, etc. The time and expense for all that goes up.

While a major book publisher would have produced this book and put it in a big catalogue to take orders through distributors, Dunmanifestin is a small book publisher which has gone around the process to take book orders directly from fans and bookstores via Kickstarter.

This post updates the financial troubles of Denmark’s Ørsted, recent BOEM auctions, and pushback against Maryland governor Wes Moore. Today, operational offshore wind capacity is less than 50 megawatts versus the Biden-Harris Administration goal of 30,000 MW by 2030.

Denmark’s Ørsted, the worldwide leading offshore wind developer, recorded a $575 million loss in the second quarter. In part, the loss is the result of disappointing developments in the U.S.

The company has delayed commercial operation of its 704-MW Revolution Wind project off the coast of Rhode Island and Connecticut from 2025 to 2026. Ørsted’s ambitious U.S. offshore wind program has been lagging, despite solid support (subsidies, permits) from the Biden administration.

A year after an Interior Department’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) auction for Gulf of Mexico leases failed to attract significant interest, BOEM continues to delay another attempt to find adequate bidders off the east coast.

Reuter’s summarized Ørsted’s issues:

Ørsted’s impairment losses also related to its Ocean Wind project in the United States whose development it halted last year, an increase in U.S. interest rates, and its decision to cease development of its green e-methanol FlagshipOne project, which was due to open in Sweden next year. Shares in Ørsted, once a green investor favourite, ended down 7.2%, having fallen as much as 9.3% earlier. They remain at less than one-third of their value since peaking in early 2021.

BOEM Auctions

In March, BOEM solicited interest in another Gulf of Mexico auction, which resulted in industry yawns. The agency stated on July 26th that it

received 25 comments in response to the March 2024 [Proposed Sale Notice], with one company expressing interest in participating. As a result, BOEM is cancelling this sale due to a lack of competitive interest. BOEM may decide to move forward with a lease sale at a future time, based on industry interest. —————

BOEM last week (Aug. 14) held a lease sale for the Mid-Atlantic region, off Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia with takers.

Norway’s Equinor Wind won a provisional lease for 101,443 acres some 26 nautical miles off Delaware for $75 million. Dominion Energy’s Virginia Electric and Power subsidiary won a provisional lease for 176,505 acres 35 miles off the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay for $18 million. Six companies participated in the auction.

The Equinor lease is not far from where Baltimore-based US Wind has a federal lease for a proposed two-phase, 2-GW project off Maryland’s Ocean City. BOEM last month (July 29) issued a final Environmental Impact Statement for the Maryland project. Maryland has also issued renewable energy certificates for the US Wind project.

US Wind, reports BOEM,

proposes to install up to 114 turbines, up to four offshore substation platforms, one meteorological tower, and up to four corridors for offshore export cables, which would make landfall in Delaware Seashore State Park. The lease area is approximately 8.7 nautical miles offshore Maryland and approximately 9 nautical miles offshore Sussex County, Delaware, at its closest points to shore.

US Wind, in partnership with Spain’s Haizea Windgroup, is also developing a plant to make monopile foundations for wind projects at Baltimore’s Sparrows Point, once the home of Bethlehem Steel when it was the world’s largest steel mill. According to the company

“Sparrows Point Steel is poised to become the best offshore wind heavy logistics and fabrication yard on the East Coast. Haizea’s depth of knowledge and expertise will cement Maryland’s role as a hub of offshore wind manufacturing in the U.S.”

Maryland Democratic Gov. Wes Moore last week (Aug. 16) faced opponents of his aggressive push for offshore wind in Ocean City. Local TV station WBOC spoke to Moore about growing local opposition on the eastern shore of Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia. Earlier in the month, Moore signed a memorandum of understanding with BOEM to open up more offshore federal land to wind development. Last year, Maryland passed a new law expanding the state’s goal for offshore wind development to 8.5 GW.

Moore told WBOC, “You’re talking about being able to power three million homes in the state of Maryland and turn us into a net exporter of clean energy. That’s exciting, it’s new jobs, it’s new opportunities.”

Many people on the Eastern Shore, particularly those who depend on the Chesapeake Bay for a living, see burgeoning wind farms as a potential disruption to their ways of life. Jimmy Hahn, an Ocean City area commercial fisherman, told the TV station, “They’re trying to steal our grounds, they’ve stolen our bottom, they’ve stolen the area that we fish in, their last resort is to buy the place where we sell our fish at and once they accomplish that we have nowhere else to work.”

Moore responded, “All those conversations have to happen with local leaders, it has to happen with local communities. There has to be measures of both transparency and accountability as to what we’re hoping for and what we’re going to achieve.”

Vineyard Wind: Yellow Flag

The Interior Department’s Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) has given Avangrid a yellow flag to continue limited work on its Vineyard Wind project off the Massachusetts coast.

BSEE shut down the 804-MW project last month following the failure of a 351-foot blade on one of its turbines, spreading debris widely to beaches on nearby Nantucket Island and as far as mainland beaches on Cape Cod. Reuters reported that the Interior Department agency last week (Aug. 13) confirmed the updated shutdown order, while Avangrid and blade maker G Vernova continue to investigate the cause of the massive blade failure.

“The updated suspension order still does not allow further blade installation or power production at this time, the companies said,” according to Reuters. Vineyard Wind and GE Vernova said they are removing portions of the damaged blade that remained on the wind turbine to remove risks of further ocean debris.

Transiting Neptune stations direct

Caveat: this may not have much of an impact on you unless Neptune is prominent in your chart: closely in aslect to the Sun, the Moon, &/or an angle; or strong Pisces &/or 12 House energies.

I always feel like I should solicit a guest blogger to write about Neptune doing things. Not only is this planet tucked away in my 12th House - not only is it not very well integrated with the rest of my chart - but it’s conjunct my North Node, ie, something completely alien to my skill set (the South Node).

Anyway: Neptune stations direct. We’ve spent the past five months (since Neptune stationed retrograde on June 30) going more inward with our spirituality, or our escapism. If we’re trying to “go with the flow,” we’ve been looking within for direction.

Neptune stationed Rx at 27°41’ Pisces, and now stations direct at 24°17’ Pisces. If you have an important placement between those degrees (or between 9°17’ and 12°41’ of the Fixed signs Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, or Aquarius) - you’ve felt some kind of dissolution (disillusion?) over the past weeks and months. Moving forward, we have a better sense of our “guiding vision” freed from the shackles of ego and glamour.

Neptune’s next station is on July 2, 2024, at 29°56’ Pisces. Almost Aries! Which is a whole ‘nuther can of worms in itself. Let’s not borrow trouble, but deal with Neptune/Pisces on our plates right now.

daily notes - july 21, 2024

Got a solicitation for a gofundme donation from a stranger, claiming to be in a war-torn region. I don't trust messages like that. There's been too many scams over the years.

-- Cooler weather again, so the windows are open. Fabric is not my friend, but I don't mind the feeling of the fan on my skin, thankfully. I'm trying to see how long I can last before I have to put my tank top in "time out", this evening. (Had to dress to fetch food. Yes, I'm eating, thankfully.)

-- Managed to fold some laundry while dinner was in the oven. No strength to carry things upstairs. I look forward to wearing my NASA shirt later, though I'm not sure when that will be.

-- Cleaned up my stash of empty drink bottles that had been accumulating in my room. I didn't count, but there must've been at least a dozen.

-- Weekly call with phone-friend went well. I talked about sensory stuff, how I try to cope. They discussed visits with friends, how their family is doing, etc. I can't remember how we got on the topic, but we discussed fandoms and different stories, then our own writings.

--- One of their stories is a big epic fantasy that has a slight twist to the background. The recurring theme is that characters go to great lengths to fix something or help someone, but it doesn't work out quite well. Is it worth the lengths of effort if the person you are rescuing is harmed in the end? Also, one character thinks he's doing the right thing but goes about it the wrong way.

--- I noted, in contrast, that my own stories are more character-driven. There are bigger machinations of the world and society around them, but each individual can only do so much within their power. But those little steps build on each other, a domino effect to affect the larger world, though the person at the starting-point has no idea what's happened. (Specifically talking about "Brave Little Tailor", which was made to deal with trauma.)

--- I loved hearing the enthusiasm in my friend's voice. I could also hear the enthusiasm in my own voice, asking to hear more. The story is clearly a labor of love, based on how much they have fleshed-out the world and how it functions. I haven't read much of their fictional narratives in recent years, so it's feels like a treat to glimpse this insight into my friend's creativity.

-- Counseling got moved to Tuesday, with the time changed a bit. Again, I'm glad I write these notes for tumblr, so I can reference them later.

-- As my counselor and I have discussed, I'm making it a priority to be gentle with myself. It's one thing to be kind when I'm really/obviously hurting, like earlier in the week. Now that I'm improving a little bit (eg not having bigger anxiety attacks), I must still be kind and let myself breathe. I'm learning to trust

Murder, Solicitation to Murder

In July 2022, a Mokena, Illinois man accused of stabbing 21-year old Grace Taylor of Ottawa to death pleaded guilty. 30-year old Michael Swift was sentenced to 53-years in prison. LaSalle County State’s Attorney Todd Martin says Swift confessed to Ottawa Detective Sgt. Kyle Booras that he killed Taylor out of jealousy or anger. He says Swift entered Taylor’s south side Ottawa apartment through an unlocked door and stabbed her in her bedroom with a knife he owned. The knife was later found in a trash can at the apartment. Swift apologized to the family of Taylor who were in the courtroom before he was sentenced.

Martin also says a family member called 911 after Swift confessed that he killed Taylor to them. During a search of Swift’s apartment a box that held the knife that he used was found as well as Taylor’s bloody socks. Martin says he is very satisfied with the outcome because he was unsure if he would have gotten a better sentence if the case went to trial. Four other charges in the murder case were dropped.

In August 2022, Swift pleaded guilty to two counts of trying to hire a hit man to kill a LaSalle County Sheriff's Deputy and a LaSalle County judge.

As part of his plea, Swift was sentenced to 25 years in prison. He'll have to serve at least 85 percent of the sentence. His new 25 year sentence will be added to his existing 53 year sentence.

LaSalle County Deputy Ray Taylor was one of Swift's murder for hire victims and is the father of Grace Taylor. He says there is no "why" for what Swift did.

Deputy Ray Taylor and his wife Ann Taylor both gave victim impact statements in court just feet away from Swift and his public defender. Both said they had never heard of Swift before the murder of their daughter.

Kendall County Assistant State's Attorney Ryan Phelps says that while Swift was being held in the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville for the Ottawa murder case, he asked a fellow inmate about hiring someone to murder a judge and Deputy Taylor in September. The other inmate reported Swift to the Kendall County Sheriff's Office which began an investigation where an undercover officer posed as a hit man and spoke to Swift. Swift offered $15,000 to the fake hit man and wanted the murders to happen in the victim's homes.

Two additional murder-for-hire counts were dropped in the plea.

TIME Magazine Snubs Elon Musk in 2024 ‘100 Most Influential in AI’ List, Includes Scarlett Johansson

TIME Magazine placed actress Scarlett Johansson in the running, but left out tech mogul and AI program creator Elon Musk off of its yearly list of the “100 Most Influential People in AI.”

For its 2024 cover, the magazine combined images of eighteen AI leaders, led by Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, with a large image of the “Black Widow” hero.

Released on Thursday, the second annual TIME100 AI edition featured prominent CEOs in the rapidly expanding area, such as Dario Amodei of Anthropic and Sam Altman of OpenAI, in addition to founders and influencers.

Musk was noticeably missing from its list. Musk introduced xAI last summer, and his AI chatbot Grok has gained popularity over competitors like ChatGPT.

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, whose software company has made huge investments in AI startup Anthropic and created a $500 million AI fund to support new startups, is the owner of the old magazine.

“Disclosures are included throughout the TIME100 AI list for any companies mentioned that are backed by Salesforce Ventures, the corporate venture capital arm of Salesforce, where TIME’s owner and co-chair, is CEO,” a Time spokesperson told reporters.

Social media backlash followed TIME’s perplexing decision to pass over the founder of SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI .

“Every person on this top 100 list, if asked, would say Elon should be on this list,” one user said on X.

The billionaire established Neuralink in 2016, and the company gained notoriety at the beginning of this year when it successfully implanted a brain chip in a paralyzed patient, enabling him to use his thoughts to surf the web and play video games.

Musk also launched Colossus, the most powerful Nvidia GPU supercomputer in the world, online this past week.

“I thought it was cute that Elon Musk wasn’t on the cover of TIME’s 100 most influential people in AI,” another user posted on X. “I had to check for myself when I heard he didn’t make the list at all. My f*cking car drives itself lol.”

Additionally, culture and media critics questioned the inclusion of YouTuber Marques Brownlee and Hollywood actor Anil Kapoor on the list of celebrities which also included actress Scarlett Johansson, who had a falling out with OpenAI over the owner’s alleged use of her voice to train a chatbot without her consent.

Rivals of Musk, such as Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, Sundar Pichai of Google, and Satya Nadella of Microsoft, were also included on the list.

“If the world of AI was dominated by the emergence of startup labs like OpenAI, Anthropic, and their competitors in 2023, this year, as critics and champions alike have noted, we’ve seen the outsize influence of a small number of tech giants,” said Editor in Chief Sam Jacobs. “This year’s list offers examples of the possibilities for AI when it moves out of the lab and into the world.”

According to a news release, the list was compiled by TIME’s editors and reporters, who solicited suggestions from numerous “industry executives.”
