list of mixed name ideas (october 29, 2024)
i sorted them into three categories: androgynous, feminine and masculine.
in this list, there's any type of names (mostly for english-speaking people though): typical first names, noun names, mythology names, etc.
if you have more ideas of names for trans folks, writers, etc, just lemme know! (Can also be not-so-cool names for the writers, we need them for the asshole side characters :3)
i will update the list every time I have a lot of new name suggestions. this is not the newest version, but you can find it under the tag #updated name list on my profile.

what are your favourite shakespeare retellings/adaptations?
Of all time? Oh my gosh this is a hard question because I truly love so many.
I'll start with Hamlet, for which I'll unfortunately have to name them all because I haven't met a Hamlet retelling I didn't like (and they're all so different and doing different cool things!)
The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie This one is very loosely a Hamlet adaptation, but I love it so much as one regardless. It's a very large-scope godpunk high fantasy, but I love the focus on Horatio (my fave character) and the fact that the Hamlet retelling is more an Easter egg than an imposed story.
Antique Roman by Syd Neben Almost inversely to The Raven Tower, this is verrrry directly a Hamlet retelling. In fact, I would pitch it more as published Hamlet/Horatio fanfiction. It reminds me of Dead Poets Society and even OHSHC in weird ways, but it's such a love letter to Hamlet and Horatio's tragic romance.
Enter Ghost by Isabella Hammad This one has really been living in my head since I read it earlier this year. This is less of a retelling, and more an exploration. It is very much a book that exists to express the necessity of storytelling as a tool of revolution, comparing Hamlet to Palestinian experiences and finding parallels in its narrative. Genuinely one of the most impactful books I've ever read.
The Death I Gave Him by Em X. Liu Liu's brain is fucking massive. This sci-fi locked room thriller retelling of Hamlet is so intense and claustrophobic and weird and gay. In this version, Horatio is literally an AI database and the sentient building in which the story takes place which is so weird and SO GENIUS. I have a really long review about it here.
Smile and Be A Villain by Yves Donlon This is a historical fantasy reimagining of Hamlet. It's super diverse, and I adore the heavy political landscape used to expand the world of this play. Donlon brings the battlefield and international politics to the forefront of Hamlet here, and in doing so, makes a really refreshing argument about this story. Also historically accurate QPR between Hamlet and Ophelia!
Beyond Hamlet retellings, I only have a few I really truly adore enough to include.
If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio So... this is my favorite book of all time. It's mostly because I lived it. But this book so perfectly encapsulates the harm in higher educational theatre spaces of merge self with character, while exploring Shakespearean archetypes and turning them on their head.
The Last True Poets of the Sea by Julia Drake I am not a big YA reader, and not a big contemporary reader, but this bisexual YA contemporary Twelfth Night retelling just really captured me. It hit home.
The Stars Undying by Emery Robin This counts right? This is a sci-fi reimagining of Julius Caesar, partially the Shakespeare and partially the history. One of the most objectively perfect books I've ever read in terms of craft, and I'm SO excited for the sequel, which I assume will be a retelling of Antony and Cleopatra! (It has bi JC and bi Cleopatra and butch lesbian Mark Antony and Alexander the Great as a dead gay god who lives inside a pearl.)
Yeah, I hope that answered your question! There's definitely others I've read and would recommend, and so so so many on my TBR, but those are the ones that I would call favorite retellings.

2023 Reviews: 5-stars, Part 1
Ok I'm trying a new thing to get more of my book reviews in long form on Tumblr - we'll see if it works! I'll be posting themed round-ups of my reviews, starting with this round-up of my first five 5-stars of the year. (Weirdly a synopsis is always the thing that slows me down the most so I'm only including a one line description of each of them, although there are also links to the blurbs.)
This is a pretty eclectic mix of books, but I absolutely loved them, and I'm excited to talk about them more!
1. Ocean's Echo by Everina Maxwell: 5/5
Pitch: SF m/m romance where a walking disaster mind reader and a very rules-oriented soldier are force-soulbonded & then discover a government conspiracy
Review: I loved this - like its predecessor Winter's Orbit, this is a standout SF romance that really builds out a world and then lovingly details two people moving through that world, and their relationship with each other. Truly excellent, and I love Surit with my whole heart.
2. Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco: 5/5
Pitch: vampire hunter teams up with two vampires to solve the mystery of new super evil vampires, & then they all fall in love
Review: Listen, this book!!! It was sexy, and dark, and mysterious, and wow. I read The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco before, and it didn't appeal to me very much, but this book hot damn. I'll be reading the sequel (the second half of the duology!) basically as soon as it comes out. I think if the second book was out right now I would be staying up as late as it took to read it.
As you'd expect, there is a fair bit of an age gap between the characters, but I thought it was handled well.
3. The Stars Undying by Emery Robin: 5/5
Pitch: Julius Caesar, gender-swapped Anthony, & Cleopatra, but space opera
Review: Wow. I loved this book. It is rich and dense and slow but it is so so good. The prose is beautiful and the descriptions are gorgeous, but if you know anything about Caesar (and you do, on the Ides of March-loving website) the whole time everything is beautiful you know it will end, which makes it more poignant while it lasts. Also, the science fiction setting is fantastic. I would absolutely devour the second book if it was out.
4. When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill: 5/5
Pitch: a bunch of women all turned into dragons and flew away in the 1950s and America doesn't know how to handle it
Review: I really loved this - I think it has a lot to say about queerness and memory and rage and freedom and joy, and most of all family. It's pretty tightly focused on Alex and her life, so it doesn't really dig into the dragon stuff as much as it could. I personally didn't mind that - it felt reasonable for the focus of the novel, especially given that it is framed as Alex's memoir. I thought it was personal and yet relatable, and I loved the characters.
5. Thief of Time by Terry Pratchett: 5/5
Pitch: time monks & Death's granddaughter try to stop a very ill-advised clock
I totally get why this is considered one of the best Discworld books. Many good theories, fun thinky thoughts, excellent puns and jokes. And in the end, one that makes you feel. (I wouldn't start here though...if you read Hogfather before this I think that would be sufficient though.

How do you come up with fairy names in OotP and the Riddleverse?
Hello, thank you for the ask. I apologize for the delay; I took a Tumblr and FOP hiatus for a while.
A lot of fairy names (like Ambrosine, Solara, Idona, and Sindri) came from whimsical name lists. Some names like Florensa I created myself to fit the same vibe that Juandissimo's name has. Over the years I divided naming themes into different cloudland regions.
Cloudlands at a Glance has sample names by region
I don't put a ton of thought into the names and typically pick whatever sounds right within the first 3 minutes of thought. Here are the thoughts behind some Origin of the Pixies and related 'fic names for anyone interested:
Fergus - Named after a stuffed triceratops owned by a sibling, I thought it was cute and it had the Scottish vibes I was aiming for in the very early stages of my worldbuilding. His middle name is Alexander
Whimsifinado - H.P.'s last name, a combination of the words whimsical and aficionado
Julius and Venus - These names for Anti-Cosmo and Anti-Wanda are the canon middle names of their fairy counterparts
Nebula - Poof's and Foop's middle name is space-themed like Cosmo and Venus and is also a nod to Crash Nebula
Ennet - Sanderson's first name, I just made it up because I liked the vibe of Emmet but the 'M' sound didn't feel very Pixie to me. I swapped them for 'N's and I love it
Longwood - Named after a teacher I had with 'wood' at the end of their surname; I just loved the way it sounded. I also love this name for Sanderson's rival pixie because it implies he's taller (which he is) and I feel like it would tick Sanderson off a lot
Hiccup - Foop's alt personality, obviously named after the fact that he hiccups a lot when he cackles. I've seen a lot of fantastic names for him in fandom [and cool portrayals], but I'm quite happy with the one I picked
Kalysta - Named after an old friend [spelled Calista]. There's no reason why this name was picked for this character specifically, apart from the fact that I always liked the name and wanted to use it. The OG spelling is really pretty, but I felt weird using a friend's name for an antagonist so I changed the spelling
Anti-Marigold - I felt this would be easier to read in story when she appeared opposite Goldie [compared to the name Anti-Goldie] and it also makes a nice parallel for Poof and Foop, as Foop also has a unique name. I don't think the name Kelsia came from anywhere specific, it just fit her
Dusty - This was Poof's concept name [iirc from the same period when Poof was going to be released in Season 2], so it's what I named the next Cosmo x Wanda child. I adore the name Dusty and I'm kind of sad that name didn't make it to the finals, but it's cute. Fairies turn to dust when they die, Anti-Fairies turn to smoke, so his counterpart is named Smoky
King Northiae / Prince Eastkal / Queen Shoulath - They're all named after cardinal directions
Anti-Bryndin - I genuinely have no idea where his name came from, I think it was the first thing to pop into my head when I was trying to name him and I knew immediately that it fit him. I wanted to have a name that sounded mysterious and unusual and ended up with this
Emery - This name first appeared in Reedfilter Rules as the name of H.P.'s daughter; this was picked because she was a pixie kid and it fit the masculine vibes I was going for. I later reused the name for H.P.'s sister in the Origin of the Pixies universe
Those are the main names that come to mind. What it really comes down to though is "Looking up whimsical names" and "Random."

The Stars Undying by Emery Lord
Source: NetGalley & owned – Thank you to the publisher TL;DR: I feel so bland on this. Meandering, with what should have been stellar themes and ideas. But little to no connection for the reader. Plot: Supposedly a Julius Caesar and Cleopatra inspired story, it’s the story of a civil war, turned assassination/revenge story. Things you’d think would be stellar but end up feeling… okay?Characters:…

Documentaire d'Harun Farocki "Le double visage"

2025 hopefuls
I was tagged by @libraryleopard to share some books I want to read in 2025! I decided to keep it to 2025 releases specifically because I couldn’t strike a good balance between new books, paperback releases, and my own TBR! and I love sharing my excitement for upcoming books that folks might not have on their radar yet. 📚✨
[books listed in images:
The Maiden and Her Monster by Maddie Martinez, an adult sapphic retelling of the myth of golem (I’ve actually had the pleasure of reading this one and I can’t wait for it to be out in the world.)
A Treachery of Swans by AB Poranek, a sapphic YA Swan Lake retelling!
The Sea Eternal by Emery Robin, the sequel to one of my favorite books and a queer scifi retelling of Antony and Cleopatra (the first one was Julius Caesar!)
The Starving Saints by Caitlin Starling, adult medieval horror with sapphic bacchanalia.
The Sacred Space between by Kalie Reid, an adult gothic romantasy by a dear friend!!
Hazelthorn by CG Drews, I still need to read his other one but I saw AJW and Shirley Jackson as comps so I will be there.
The Isle in the Silver Sea by Tasha Suri, a sapphic fantasy with knights and witches and reincarnation comped to The Green Knight and The Starless Sea (I nearly pass out from excitement every time I think about this one for real. I’m taking deep breaths rn.)
Fate’s Bane by C.L. Clark, if R&J were cursed sapphic artificers, so yeah i’m there. (also shout out to the Ambessa book, I’m also SO hyped for that.)
The Second Death of Locke by VL Bovalino, an epic fantasy comped to Gideon the Ninth and Six Deaths of the Saint.]
This is the year of devastating knight romances and reincarnation and I genuinely could NOT be happier about it.
tagging: @haliespages @caitsbooks @etherealacademia @yaboywillyshakes @hayniacstuck / anyone else who wants to make one! just tag me cuz i’d love to see your anticipated reads :)
#bookblr#anticipated releases#upcoming books#2025 books#also if any of these publishers want to send me early copies…#please
