Castlevania Symphony of the Night Part 1: Die Monster!.....in Japanese!!
We’re here folks
We’re finally here
And I’m playing the Japanese version! Why? Well let’s just say that there’s some content that was originally exclusive to the original japanese release which was cut from the international one. Said content was restored in the PSP version....but I decided against playing that. It’s a playable version, but it’s minor yet noticeable graphical downgrades compared to the original just bug me the wrong way
You can already spot a difference in the intro: the actual narrated text is english even in the Jpn version, and no it’s not due to me playing a translated rom, even untranslated it’s in english, just with a japanese voice over
What intrigues me is how the text itself was still largely rewritten in the international versions, yet even the japanese one calls Dracula’s Castle “Castlevania”, which I had always thought was just a quirk of the english localization and not something that was ever truly recognized by the japanese side of things, at least not until the mid 2000s when even the japanese versions started using that name as the series’ title for a time
However, while I can’t understand japanese, I can’t hear the narrator actually pronouncing the name “Castlevania” anywhere, so I’m going to guess that he’s reading from a different script?
Anyway there’s going to be...LOTS to talk about with this game, though luckily we’ll have plenty of parts to do so :)
Just to start off with something that everybody knows by now: this might just be the most beautiful sprite based game of its generation, probably of the whole decade of the 90s
Yeah sure there are a couple of weird imperfections here and there, namely Richter’s sprite still being from RoD instead of reflecting his redesign, except for one cutscene where he IS given an updated sprite (I guess that’s one point in favor of the Saturn version). This is pretty much the game that started the tradition of reusing old enemy sprites, especially guys from Rondo and a couple from Castlevania IV
But honestly? This stuff is barely even a blip on the radar here. Every sprite, every background is so detailed, so well animated, oozing with so much charm! Every enemy has their own unique death animation, there are a billion different animations for the various spells and secret moves, I could list stuff all night!
Alucard’s sprite and animations have entered into the realm of videogame legends now, which is funny because when you think about it his animations are just way too smooth compared to everything else he kinda sticks out, not to mention that the actual running animation looks silly with the way he moves his arms (not that the Belmonts in the previous games weren’t guilty of a similar running animation quirk with their ultra-manly walk cycles), but it’s just so mesmerizing to look at! He truly feels weightless, like some sort of wraith drifting through the night, with that cape, that hair, the after images etc
The funny part is that the game does implement a bunch of more typical PS1 3D effects, which you’d think would clash hard with the sprites and age the game badly but they actually end up giving it even MORE charm, because they’re usually relegated to 3D backgrounds, but the actual renders not only look pretty damn good usually, they actually help make some environments look more memorable and larger than life! The cathedral, the moving clouds, the houses in Olrox’s Quarters. The Magic Tomes that attack you in the Library technically clash so hard with the rest of the place, but the renders themsleves are nice and I fucking love watching them explode into a burst of flames as their letters just spill out from the pages!
I even love the SOUND EFFECTS in this game! I’m pretty sure that most of them are just stock effects, especially the ones for the transformations and whenever you use a potion....but I dunno they’re goofy in a good, charming way to me
And we haven’t even talked about the music! Oh God! I’ll save THAT for the next part!

Game review: Undercover Cops (SFC/SNES)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Title: Undercover Cops
Japanese Title: アンダーカーコップス
Release Date: 3 March 1995 (Japan)
Platform: Super Famicom (SNES)
Developer: Varie
Publisher: Varie
Licensor: Irem Software Enginerring
Genre: Scrolling Beat-em-up
Number of Players: 2
Catalogue Number: SHVC-AUCJ-JPN
——————————————————————————
"Undercover Cops: Irem's funky 16-bit ode to police brutality. An American version of this game was planned, but was cancelled.... or was it?"
Undercover Cops on the Super Famicom is an underrated scrolling beat-em-up by Varie (arcade version originally by Irem) that never saw an official western release until Retro-Bit was granted the license by Irem to polish up a western release translated in English for all Super Nintendo systems around the world. It also turns out that a lot of the people working on this game would later work on the Metal Slug series for SNK.
All three playable characters in this game are really slow. Actually, they are relatively slow if you're coming from games of this genre with faster characters than this. As far as beat-em-ups go, this is a slow one. You move slowly, your enemies move slowly, and if there's too much happening on-screen, the game slows down; and if you have to jump, be prepared for a half-second delay. Saying that, it sure is different in that it makes the game more tactical and more accessible. The moves from the playable characters are pretty cool, and so is the soundtrack. Just sayin'. Weapon pickups are pretty essential. It's just a shame it isn't as fast as other beat-em-ups that were more established than this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
PROS:
Definitely an interesting curiosity in a sea of beat-em-ups
Borrows from the likes of Final Fight and Bare Knuckle/Streets of Rage in terms of move variety
Gameplay is a pleasure if you know what you are doing
The soundtrack rocks
Nice variety of levels
It plays and controls really well. But...
CONS
The slowdown. Oh my god, the slowdown.
The moves are interesting, but quite lacking at the same time
Japanese-exclusive for a long time until Retro-Bit came along
VERDICT:
So, is Undercover Cops really worth getting? Well..... it's a good game, it's got its unique share of flaws, but... being one of the later Super Famicom releases in 1995 (when the world was plugged into 32-bit technology with the PS1 and Sega Saturn taking off, with the N64 due imminent) you would really expect it to be better programmed without the slowdown. Overall, fans of beat-em-ups would enjoy it, but that's about it, really.
Here is my scoring system for this game.
Gameplay: 7/10 - the slowdown helps it, but to a detriment
Graphics: 5/10 - it looks cool for a SNES game, but nothing too impressive
Sound: 6/10 - it's not bad, but surprisingly higher quality than the original SNES Final Fight
Soundtrack: 7/10 - they've pulled out all the stops when it came to music composition, though not the best
Menus: N/A - it's as simple as can be
Replayability: 5/10 - it's not as engaging to most players, but still worth a replay or two
So overall, Undercover Cops on the Super Famicom gets a score of...
6/10.
It is an interesting game, but not for everyone. I recommend starting out with either Streets of Rage or Final Fight first.

08/24/24: Saturday yard sale bonanza! I can't believe all these nice things I got this morning! A guy on Facebook posted his yard sale and he put up a pic saying most games $5 bucks. So of course my curiosity got me! And when I made it there, I saw a big table full of multiple games from different consoles. Quite a few commons that I had already. So I grabbed a few I didn't have. And as I kept searching, my stack got bigger. Japanese games were popping out too! I also found some nes and snes carts but the man wanted $10 each for those. And I bit on a few og nintendo carts. So I finally had to stop. I think I got enough. Five JPN psp games, five jpn DS games, one wii game, two ps3 games, two xbone and 1 ps4 game. Two ps1 games. And ps1 Dragon Quest VII jpn! Total for everything there was $135 dollars! And just to make it an even $140, I grabbed Pit-fighter SNES. And the guy was cool with it. I'm excited to add these to my ever growing collection!

Street Fighter Zero/Alpha 3: #CPS2 is the original (I don't have the board sadly) and technically the #sega #naomi #gdrom that I own is actually based in the #Dreamcast port. Apparently in terms of arcade perfect port, it goes to the #JPN #import #saturn port since that is based on the CPS2 board where everything is still sprite based. Seriously, worth every penny. The second would be the Dreamcast port, for some reason, the hit sparks were made with polygons. Weird, I know. And a distant third is the #sony #playstation port on the #ps1. I'm not going to get into the #ps2 collection, which are good but I just prefer playing on the cab or just awesome, seriously it's amazing, Sega Saturn port.

i feel like playing some games in japanese again...
might go for fire emblem genealogy of the holy war (no translation patch this time!) since i thiiink i might’ve softlocked myself in the last chapter. but the japanese font really hurts my eyes...i also have fuuin no tsurugi in jpn but that font is also hard on my eyes. so, debatable. but I had A TON of fun with genealogy (the newest translation patch is also excellent and a joy to read!) so maybe i’ll go with that if i want to put up with a lot of hiragana and awful font.
OR, I could try to emulate baroque for the ps1.
might make a dedicated post for that, but baroque is actually a really good game that didn’t get much attention in the west when it was released for ps2 and the wii (i think it’s gotten a switch port too). it’s a dungeon-crawler with good grotesque monster design and a surprisingly in depth story uncovered through multiple playthroughs. it would be good for analyzing and looking at dialogue, and really getting myself to learn some new words bc it’s kind of necessary to talk to all the npcs not just for flavor text but to learn about what the heck happened to the post-apocalyptic world

Special Report!
(It’s nothing serious, don’t worry!)
I just wanted to do a mini-article about a gaming tool I stumbled across recently while digging for PS1 parts.
Under the Cut!
So I encountered this little gem at the flea market about two weeks ago while looking through the collection of PS1 games and such, and paid $20 for it (the guy was someone I had bought from before and he knew it was rare. I had told him prior to the purchase some time before that if it was still there, I would buy it off of him. You know the rest).
This was bought after Friday Special #5 (you can read it here), otherwise I would’ve mentioned it alongside my flashed GameShark.
This is what it looks like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s about the same size as my GameShark for reference, about 3-4 inches on all sides. It’s kind of the only one like it because when I checked on eBay for its value, I saw others that functioned similarly but only found another one exactly like mine for about $30 including shipping.
Anyhow, I finally had a chance to test it by lugging out the PS1 and getting it set up. Upon booting, I was greeted with a menu screen that had the following options:
Start Game
Start Game with Cheats
Select Cheats
Memory Manager
Graphic Viewer
CD - ROM
Looking further, I find the cheats list, and to my surprise, the entire list was for Japanese games and Japanese games strictly (I wish they would’ve used the more appropriate acronym JPN instead because that chosen acronym is a slur), so that was a neat site. Also, it was quite the list as it contains 47 games currently with some notable titles like Dead or Alive and X-Men vs Street Fighter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I unfortunately could not get any farther than that because I had none of the following games and my Japanese copy of Soul Edge didn’t do anything because of region-locked technology. As previously stated, the list only contains Japanese games so my copy of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo didn’t do much either.
I am curious though if the power replay only actually works for Japanese titles because of the list or if the switch on the right side has anything to do with it switching.
If y’all know anything about this or have one of your own, I’d love to hear what you got!
