I like yours better, let's switch
Jonathan Byers, who was made into a caretaker, had to take care of his brother, cook and clean while his mom was working. Then he himself had to work, and shoulder burdens for his mother. Turns out and presents as an Alpha. Man of the house, it feels right. Or it's supposed to.
Nancy Wheeler, pink and pastels, straight A's straight path, girl. Curly hair, and big eyes. She was the girl next door, the nerd girl you'd find a delight, with laughter like tinkling bells. She's an Omega. It makes sense. To everyone except Nancy Wheeler.
Steve Harrington, jock extraordinaire, hairy chest and biceps. Gets into fights and is the kids protector. A ladies man, a cassanova. Is an Omega. Everyone is absolutely baffled, but Steve knows he's perfect. He likes it.
Steve loves them both, and just like them, was absolutely baffled at the presentation. Laughs about it, patting their backs going, "I really thought it would be the other way around." And in some event or another, of them getting closer and admitting their feelings over it, Steve has a thought.
Not sure if it's a good thought but it's there. He wants his friends happy, and he wants them to feel good the way he does in is own skin. So, he proposes. Studding and bitching. Respectively.
Steve, during a hangout with both of them, apropos to nothing, he blurts it out. "Ha– have any of you thought of bitching?" And like, Jonathan, high out of his mind, admits that he's thought of it. Thought of going through that with an alpha. But answers, "but.. I don't think I'd go for just any alpha. And after all, I have Nancy.. and you, I guess." Jonathan shakes his head, straightening up on the couch, "and neither of you are alphas." He winces, turning to Nancy, "no offense." He smiles sadly, it honestly feels hopeless.
Nancy, although her face gone a little sour, pats him on the thigh. Then looks back to Steve, curious as to why he went and picked such a topic, "why do you ask, Steve?"
Steve smiles. He doesn't know when all three of them have grown close, when it didn't feel like he was intruding. He got to know Jonathan better. Loved hanging out with him and how happy Nancy was. Not just watching her with Jonathan but realizing how she's giddy with him too. With Jonathan.
He's not really sure how it progressed to this. To ease and to be ushered in, but he's not really thinking about that. He's thinking of the implications, and the fact that he can help. "Have you thought of studding?"
Nancy, the one with all the sense, catching on so quickly it makes Steve breathless at how well she knows him, "and how will we work it out?" Straight to the point. Or maybe she's thought of ths too.
Jonathan all bleary eyed, darts his gaze back and forth between the two of them, trying to catch on to what they were somehow telepathically communicating about, "am I..missing something here?" He gestures vaguely.
Steve, the cheeky thing, puts his hand in Jonathan's thigh, like how Nancy did, but slides it up, trying to reassure him that whatever it is, it isn't bad, "how do you feel about getting bitched, Jonny?" Steve is literally the only one who can call him that.
He blushes, but still unsure of where this is going, "uhh, what?"
Steve can't help but giggle, making Nancy sigh in exasperation, and begins to try and explain Steve's ridiculous, although very simple solution, "Steve studs me and I bitch you."
Jonathan's jaw drops, eyes wide and looking between two of them in awe, "woah."
"I know, right!" Steve bursts in giddy delight, making Nancy chuckle.

Isnotreal attacked the Iranian consulate in Syria, killing an important general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, among others (1) (2). Isnotreal hasn't confirmed or denied blame for this attack (2).
Iran declared, Wednesday last week, that it would respond (1) (3).
my sources disagree (slightly):(NRK: The Iranian response was sending over 300 missiles and drones (3). ) (Reuters: over 200 drones and missiles, according to Israeli military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari(2))
Most of them got cut off, according to isnotreal (3). Iran also said it was a response to multiple crimes by Israel (not just the criminal attack on the consulate) (3).
Iran's allies, including Hizbollah (according to themselves) and the Houthies (according to media), are also supposed to have attacked isnotreal (3).
The USA (Biden) is saying they are assisting isnotreals defence and side with Isnotreal strongly against Iran (3) (2) (link to statement). Donald Trump says he thinks the USA is not doing enough to support isnotreal (2). The Norwegian foreign minister condemned isnotreals attack on Iran (3). Iranians celebrate Irans attack on Isnotreal, saying "death to Israel", "death to usa", according to AFP (4). Iran warns isnotreal not to commit further crimes, or else they will respond stronger, but say they consider the matter concluded (2). Isnotreal wants the UN to move to condemn Iran's retaliation (3). Isnotreal says they will retaliate grandly (2).
Multiple news bureaus report having seen drones from Iraq (3).
The British, Usamerican and Jordanian defenses all report having shot down Iranian drones that were heading to isnotreal (3).
The NRK correspondent in Jerusalem reports having seen missiles being shot down, this being the first time in a while there's been any bombing in the area, videos from Hareetz also show this (3).
For most of the bombing isnotrealis were told to sit in bomb rooms (3). The bombings we're warned about in the app Red Alert (3).
slight disagreement between my sources here, but: (NRK: According to isnotreali ambulances there has been one injury, a ten year old was critically hurt (3).) (Reuters: According to isnotreali authorities there has been one injury, a seven year old girl was critically hurt (2))
edit: Addition that Norwegian newspaper The Class Struggle (Klassekampen) made a two pager on the attack on Iran (published Saturday 13.04.2024), predicting Irans attack and supporting the claim that 7 members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. They also added that the UK David Cameron said it would be a misstep for Iran to retaliate. (5)

Note about the quality of sources:
NRK generally seem a lot more critical of isnotreal and don't seem to fit the criticisms that have been raised about "western media", I mean I assume most of the people complaining don't even speak Norwegian so yeah, I trust NRK, NRK is btw Norway's official news agency "Norsk rikskringkasting", which is free. NRK doesn't have a rating, but Norway is considered to have "excellent freedom" of press, ranking first globally (MBFC).
Reuters is English language Western media, so I assume they are more biased in favor of isnotreal, however they have a relatively high factuality score and are said to have low bias, though with being from the UK they are only mostly free media (MBFC). Their trust principles are linked here.
Also note about this post, I am mostly translating the NRK article, I skipped some parts (mostly to make this more strictly news) and restructured some parts. This is mostly the work of the journalists in source 3.
edit:
Klassekampen is a left wing paper that I personally consider fairly reliable for Palestine. They have from the start just written more about Palestine, simply enough. Again there's no MBFC score for this paper. This article has not been debunked in the Norwegian fact checker Faktisk.no. Klassekampen has failed fact check before (at faktisk.no), usually about Norwegian politics.

Tumblr media
Any interest in Smallville and attraction to Lex Luthor will have to include at least one watch of Sorority Boys.
Tumblr media
I'm chaotic, I'm hot, and I have a marital aid fight with someone during the climax. And there were a couple of Alexis Luthor fics back in the day.
I did come upon one Smallville fic I wrote way back when I might not mind sharing, alto thinking about it Tumblr could be a better place for my take on Alexis too, but I want to read and probably tidy them up a bit before sharing. Not because they're bad ideas, I've just improved in my story telling since then.
Will admit that I did take someone's idea of a gender swapped Clark and was able to work it over twice, really could have used an editor or someone to help work the stories out a bit more, and ultimately funnel things in to a more original idea I just haven't been back to much because I just haven't.
But if there is anyone out there wanting to do some major rewriting and restructuring of FtM Clark Kent message me and I can send to you what I did. I just don't want the old user name or versions out there for reasons.
Not that I wouldn't be in to owning up to them or anything, they just aren't written as well as they could be and it's too much for me to figure out and I'd rather spend my writing energy elsewhere. Writers know how it is.
I think if I were to go back to Smallville I'd concentrate on one shots or limited series as I work out an idea. Alexis Luthor being bald and masculine looking embracing her butchness as she's entranced by the idea of Clark's physical presence and the cute little girlfriends he gets could be a good idea.
And for the love of everything someone do Lionel Luthor and what he'd do to Jonathan Kent if given the chance.

Tumblr media
Powers
Bizarro Physiology
Superhuman Strength
Superhuman Speed
Invulnerability
Self-Sustenance: Unlike Superman, who relies upon solar radiation in order to tap into his super-powers, Bizarro requires no such external assistance.
Flight
Arctic Vision: Bizarro can emit and release a powerful concentrated amount of cold steam from his eyes, as well as shoot ice beams from them.
Flame-Breath: Bizarro can produce and spray super-heated plasma or lava-like fluid from his mouth through exhalation.
Bio-Fission: While operating within an environment under a blue sun, Bizarro gains the ability to replicate new lifeforms from his own body mass. Using this power, Bizarro populated a cube-shaped planetoid that has become colloquially known as "Bizarro World".
Tumblr media
Weaknesses
Vulnerability to Blue Kryptonite: Blue Kryptonite has proven to be fatal to Bizarro. Exposure to blue Kryptonite radiation drains away Bizarro's strength, and prolonged exposure will ultimately kill him.
Tumblr media
History
This creature is actually the third being to assume the name of Bizarro. The first was a failed clone of Superman developed by Lex Luthor and a scientist named Doctor Teng. The second Bizarro was another failed clone developed during a time when Luthor was himself dying from a genetically engineered clone plague. This Bizarro however, has nothing at all to do with Lex Luthor.
A few years ago, the Joker managed to acquire for himself the 5th dimensional powers of Mister Mxyzptlk. With this power, he declared himself Emperor and created his own insane version of Superman. Bizarro was intended to imitate the role of Superman, but with the Joker's best interests at heart.
The creature was subsequently captured by the Pokolistanian dictator General Zod, and tortured, apparently just for the pleasure of beating someone who resembles Superman. After escaping from Pokolistan with Superman's help, Bizarro recreates his Jokerworld headquarters, the Graveyard of Solitude, and at erratic intervals emerges to "help" or hinder Superman; the decision as to which being seemingly random, and the same amount of trouble caused either way.
Bizarro was later invited to join the Secret Society of Supervillains. Bizarro challenges Zoom to a race, due to Bizarro's complicated speech patterns, neither Zoom nor Cheetah are sure which end result of the race would convince Bizarro to join. The two race across the planet, Bizarro's erratic zig-zagging path becomes a point of contention with Zoom. When Zoom insults and threatens Bizarro, he is convinced that Zoom is his friend and joins. While with the Society, Bizarro kills the Human Bomb, commenting that he likes the flashes of light that the Bomb's powers produce.
Tumblr media
One Year Later
One year later after the events of the Infinite Crisis, Bizarro was held captive by Lex Luthor and has been watching television in a small room for thirteen months. As a result, he is better informed than before.
Afterwards Bizarro leaves Earth to create a home for himself, creating a cube shaped planet, filled with abstract versions of various buildings and locations on Earth. Bizarro found himself lonely, however, He soon realized that under the power of a blue sun he gained a new ability called "Bizarro Vision". He uses his new ability to populate the planet with Bizarros, starting with a Bizarro Lois, that feared and hated him. Attempting to find answers Bizarro abducts Jonathan Kent, and Superman follows in pursuit. With Superman's help, he becomes the new Bizarro World's greatest hero.
Tumblr media
Adventures in Space
Sometime later Bizarro mysteriously wound up on Throneworld; Home of Prince Gavyn. In fifteen minutes of confusion, an angry Bizarro defeated half of Throneworld's Imperial Guard before Gavyn stopped Bizarro by befriending him. Gavyn kept Bizarro sedated with food and cartoons until Adam Strange, having learned from the Weird of Bizarro's presence on Throneworld, teleported the two to Hardcore Station to aid his overpowered allies. Bizarro became embroiled in the war between Rann, Thanagar, Lady Styx, and Synnar.
Tumblr media
Fun Facts
Bizarro is also known as Bizarro Superman and Bizarro No. 1.
Bizarro wears a chain around his neck with a stone medallion that reads, "Bizarro No. 1". Ironically, this version of the Bizarro is the third being to assume such a name since Crisis on Infinite Earths. In Bizarro-logic however, declaring himself No. 1 makes perfect sense. His costume is the same as Superman's except for the colors, pink instead of red and purple instead of blue, and the "S" logo, which is backwards.

Tamara O’Neal, a 38-year-old emergency physician, was fatally shot on Monday at Chicago’s Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, where she worked. The killer was Juan Lopez, reportedly her ex-fiancé. Before Lopez shot himself, he also killed Dayna Less, a pharmacy resident, and Samuel Jimenez, a police officer.
Though many details about the crime remain unknown, O’Neal’s family said she had recently broken off her engagement to Lopez. He had confronted O’Neal on Monday to demand the engagement ring back, a police spokesperson told the Chicago Tribune.
The story, unfortunately, is a familiar one. Fifty-four percent of shootings with four or more victims are related to domestic or family violence, according to the group Everytown for Gun Safety. And many shooters, from Ian David Long, who killed 12 people and himself at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California, on November 7, to Scott Beierle, who killed two women and himself at a Florida yoga studio less than a week prior, have a history of domestic disputes, domestic violence, or hateful rhetoric toward women.
Domestic violence, unfortunately, is common throughout the world. But ready access to guns in the United States makes it more likely that abuse will turn into mass murder. “The prevalence of guns in this country coupled with the prevalence of domestic violence leads to fatalities,” said Jennifer Payne, an attorney with Chicago’s Legal Assistance Foundation, which offers free legal aid to people in poverty, including domestic violence survivors.
Federal law prohibits people convicted of domestic violence from buying guns. But because of loopholes and inconsistent laws at the state level, many abusers own guns anyway. Closing those loopholes would go a long way to breaking the connection between domestic violence and gun homicide.
“We know this is an incredibly common form of intimate partner violence, and we know how to stop it,” said Phoebe Kilgour, a spokesperson for Everytown. All that’s needed is the political will to actually do so.
O’Neal had gotten into emergency medicine in part to help underserved communities, according to the Chicago Tribune. She had been the director of her church choir, and was close to her family in La Porte, Indiana. Whenever her father texted her, he told WBEZ Chicago, she always texted back — until he saw news of the shooting at the hospital and asked her if she was all right.
“I texted her twice and I didn’t get an answer,” her father said. “That’s the only time.”

— Michael Puente (@MikePuenteNews) November 20, 2018
O’Neal’s family members told the Tribune that O’Neal and Lopez had ended their engagement just weeks before they were to be married. The reason is unclear, but according to her father, it was her decision. “She broke off the engagement; he couldn’t get over it,” he told the Tribune.
Lopez apparently had a history of threatening behavior. In 2014, his then-wife had reported that he threatened her, according to Chicago network WGN. “He began sending threats via text message to come to my job and cause a scene,” she wrote at the time. She was granted a restraining order against him by a judge, according to the Tribune.
O’Neal’s murder is part of a distressingly common pattern. Last April, Cedric Anderson shot his estranged wife at the San Bernardino, California, elementary school where she taught, also killing an 8-year-old student and wounding a 9-year-old. In May of this year, 10 students were shot and killed at Santa Fe High School in Texas — the suspect was a boy who had been making increasingly aggressive advances toward one of the victims over a period of months, according to the girl’s mother. In July, dozens of people were held hostage at a Trader Joe’s market in Los Angeles, and one employee was eventually killed — the suspect is also accused of shooting his grandmother and wounding his girlfriend earlier in the day.
Other mass shooters and shooting suspects have had a prior history of domestic violence allegations. Police had been called to the home that Long, the Thousand Oaks shooter, shared with his mother earlier this year after reports of a domestic dispute. Devin Kelley, who killed 26 people at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, last year, had been convicted of domestic violence in 2012 for assaulting his spouse and their child, as Vox’s German Lopez notes. James Hodgkinson, who shot Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) and four others last year before being killed by police, had been charged with domestic battery and discharge of a firearm in 2006, after an incident with his foster daughter.
Meanwhile, other shootings have been preceded by misogynist rhetoric on the part of the suspect. Elliot Rodger, who killed six people and wounded 13 before taking his own life in Isla Vista, California, in 2014, left behind a YouTube video in which he said women who weren’t attracted to him would be punished — and he has been cited admiringly by at least two shooters since.
There’s a connection between gun violence and the kind of toxic masculinity expressed by Rodger and others. “There is a particular form of masculinity that’s been very consciously cultivated and constructed by the corporate gun lobby over the past decades,” Jonathan Metzl, a professor of sociology and psychiatry at Vanderbilt University who has studied gun violence, told me earlier this year.
Gun makers and the National Rifle Association consciously play on gender stereotypes in their ads and publications, and sometimes imply that to be a real man, you need to own a gun. And those arguments may resonate with men who feel dissatisfied or angry in their relationships.
Men interviewed at gun shows often bring up marital or relationship problems or “express resentment over the idea that the estranged spouse might try to get more financial support,” Robert Spitzer, a political science professor at the State University of New York Cortland and the author of the book The Politics of Gun Control, told Vox’s Hope Reese last year.
Gun culture in general extols “what might be identified as traditional male values of male dominance, of the man properly expressing the use of force,” Spitzer added.
Of course, most gun owners never kill anyone. And there’s a distinction between incidents of domestic violence that also become mass shootings, and mass shootings by people with a history of domestic abuse or misogyny. In the latter case, the shooting may or may not be related to prior misdeeds. But the way that guns are marketed and sold in America, specifically to male consumers, help create the conditions under which angry men may see gun violence as the answer to their problems.
One reason why shootings tied to domestic violence happen so frequently is that domestic violence itself is incredibly common. One in three women and one in four men have experienced violence at the hands of a partner at some point in their lifetime, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. And violence by intimate partners accounts for 15 percent of all violent crime.
Abuse by partners or family members is a worldwide problem, but in the United States, it’s worsened by the availability of guns. The presence of a gun in the home makes it five times more likely that a woman in an abusive relationship will be killed.
What’s more, the presence of a gun can make it more likely that bystanders and others will be harmed in a domestic violence situation. Access to guns “increases workplace violence and violence against law enforcement officers,” both of which were at play in the Mercy Hospital shooting, Payne said.
If the suspect in that shooting had been carrying a knife instead of a gun, it’s possible that O’Neal would still have been harmed, Payne said. But, she added, “the pharmacist would be alive today and the police officer would be alive today.”
A few relatively simple policy reforms would make it harder for domestic abusers to get access to guns, Kilgour said:
The “boyfriend loophole” needs to be closed. While people convicted of domestic violence against a spouse, or under a permanent restraining order, are prohibited from owning guns under federal law, the law doesn’t apply to those convicted of harming an unmarried partner. “Federal law has not kept up with modern relationships,” Kilgour said.
The “gun show loophole” needs to be closed, too. The federal background check system is supposed to stop convicted abusers from buying guns — in fact, one in seven people stopped by the background check system are abusers, Kilgour said. But federal law does not prohibit unlicensed sellers from selling guns without background checks, which means that in many states, an abuser can still buy a gun at a gun show, online, or from a family member and use it to harm a partner. “This is one of the biggest problems for protecting domestic violence victims from gun violence,” Kilgour said.
State laws need to catch up with federal law. Many states don’t have their own version of the federal ban on abusers owning guns, Kilgour said. “While domestic abusers in those states are prohibited from possessing guns under federal law,” she explained, “it often means that local law enforcement and local prosecutors don’t have the tools they need to enforce those restrictions.” Federal authorities usually aren’t the ones responding to reports of domestic disputes, and state and local law enforcement aren’t always able to enforce federal law. In many cases, “there are not state laws that empower the people who are actually out policing communities to make sure that these people don’t have guns,” Kilgour said.
Authorities need to be able to confiscate the guns that abusers already own. Most states don’t require abusers to turn in their guns, even if they’re prohibited from buying more, Kilgour said. That means any firearms they owned before their conviction remain in the home, making it more likely that they’ll kill their partners.
These policy changes wouldn’t prevent all shootings related to domestic violence. Many abusers are never convicted, and helping survivors get to safety, report the crime if they wish, and access legal representation is critical for preventing future violence. “Only 50 percent of domestic violence victims who walk into the […] courthouse in Cook County get any assistance at all” from an attorney or domestic violence advocate, Payne said.
But gun violence studies show that policies to reduce access to firearms have a real impact.
“Research shows that in the states that go beyond federal law and require a background check on every handgun sale, fewer women are shot to death by intimate partners,” Kilgour said. Meanwhile, state laws that require people subject to domestic violence restraining orders to turn in their guns are associated with a 10 lower rate of intimate partner homicide, according to Everytown.
In recent years, some states have passed laws allowing extreme risk protection orders, which let law enforcement confiscate guns from people who are deemed a danger to themselves or others. These laws have shown promise, especially in preventing suicides.
Earlier this year, Illinois passed such a law, called the Firearms Restraining Order Act. But the law was too late to help Tamara O’Neal: It takes effect in January 2019.

Documentation of my creative process to achieve a solo performance piece
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MX3Hu8loXTE" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>My research began in week two, through the creation of my presentation on conflict. My point of departure was Edward Albee's 1962 play,'Who is afraid of Virginia Wolf?'
I was most interested in the marital conflict between the play's central characters George and Martha. Their relationship is an undermining of the idea of a happy couple and their marriage highly dysfunctional. The play suggests that every marriage is marked with some conflict or turmoil but that, when all is said and done, they continue on. I could personally relate to this as I had not long before witnesses my own parents address a marital conflict that they psychologically processed together , they pushed through it all and now have come out of it knowing one another better and having a far stronger relationship.
My parents marital issues were to do with lying so it brought me to the concept of mythomania otherwise known to most of us as compulsive lying. Mythomania can be defined as an abnormal or pathological tendency to exaggerate or tell lies. Prior to my research I did not realise it could actually be classified as a proper disease. It is not as highly recognised as other mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety and there is no specific medication to treat it.
I started watching multiple videos on youtube about this conflict and exploring why individuals feel the need to deceive others.
Dr Phil episode entitled Why do people lie?

Fudge factor-the little bit of deception that people are willing to display, that only slight differs from the truth.
Factors that alter the fudge factor also changes people’s ability to be dishonest
There are dozens of elements that can alter the magnitude of the fudge factor.
If you say to yourself ‘everyone is doing this’, then you are able to justify this deception to yourself.
In order to study dishonesty, we need to be able to measure the extent to which people are dishonest.
One way to test this is the matrix experiment:
Method: It involves giving participants 20 simple math problems. The problems were fairly solvable if the candidates had enough time however the participants were not given this time. They had 5 minutes to solve as many as possible. They then had to count how many questions that they got correct. Then they were to take their test papers and shred them. They then tell the person running the experiment how many questions they got correct and were handed money in the amount equivalent to their correct number of answers. What the participants did no know was that the shredder had been alter to only shred the sides of the paper not all of it. On average most participants got 4 correct answers however they repost that they got 6 correct.
Results:
They had over 40,000 participants, nearly 70% of whom cheated.
They found 20 big cheaters, these are people who cheated all the way said they solved 20 problems correctly and in total they stole $400 from the experiment.
They found 28.000+ little cheaters who in total stole $50,000 from the experiment
The results of the experiment are not a bad reflection of reality.
There was a far larger number of small cheaters and because of this their economic impact is far greater than the big cheaters.
Original Idea:
So my idea was to originally construct a ten minute filmed based around this conflict of lying, though which I would highlight individuals reasons for lying and the issues that it causes with their relationships with others.
**Just a little disclaimer, a lot of my draft scripts are not complete because as soon as I decide that I do not like where my work is going I just stop.
This was the first script that I started to write:
There is only one character in the film. The dialogue is a monologue format with the main character breaking off and embodying other characters to assist with the context and storyline.
Johnathan:
I am the most outstanding cardiovascular surgeon at Royal Holloway Hospital, London. I am very successful indeed and the very best in my field. This is why I am head of my department. This is why my name is engraved in capital letters on a shiny gold platted plaque, underneath a large, rather dashing portrait of myself; in the hospital reception area. I earn vast amounts of money that I splurge on my family and friends. I give my wife and two children copious amount of love and affection. I communicate effectively and openly with my family and avoid secrets. I give vast amounts of financial aid to charities and I have adopted an endangered orangutan for Christ sake. (PAUSE)
Who am I kidding? Everything I have just told you is a completely untrue. Every line is complete bullshit..oh apart from my dialogue about the endangered organutang, that is most definitely true. The crazy thing is I know that I lie a lot; sometimes I tell up around 500 lies a day, but I just can’t help it. I have this ideal picture of myself and how I want my life to go. When my life does not go the way in which I intended and I am still the worthless individual I was yesterday, then lying about it is the only way I can cope.
I immediately didn't like where this was going. I felt no emotional connection or any relation to this character 'Jonathan' that I had created. I also thought that a ten minute monologue on film might be rather boring.
For my second script attempt to bring in another character:
Setting: Therapy room
Jonathan’s first session with therapist.
Two characters: therapist and gentleman
Therapist never appears on screen only gentleman.
Therapist: Hello Jonathan it is lovely to meet you. I usually start my sessions with some basic questions. As you answer my questions I will be taking some notes. Do not be alarmed this is just so that I can keep track of how you progress through my sessions. Have you ever had therapy before?
Jonathan: No, I have not had therapy before.
Therapist: Okay well shall we start by discussing your upbringing?
Jonathan: My upbringing?
Therapist: Yes, what was your life like as a child?
Jonathan: Well there is not much to tell really. My father was an alcoholic who beat my mother whenever he was drunk. My mother was too wrapped up in her delusional love for my father that she did not have time to provide me with the love and nurturing that I required.
Therapist: What are some of the feelings you have about your childhood?
Jonathan: Feelings?
Therapist: Yes, feelings
Jonathan: I do not have feelings.
Therapist: why do you not have feelings?
Jonathan: Well I have never known how to express emotion.
Therapist: Would you say that you try not to think about your past and that you have avoided coming to terms with it and the effect it may have had on you in your adult life?
Jonathan: The past is in the past and that is where is shall remain.
Therapist: Would you not admit though that it was a relief to describe your childhood out loud, to someone else?
Jonathan: then why did you ask me the question, if you already know the answer?
Tutor feedback on scripts so far:
Remember that lying is contextual.
Do not focus so much on the form but rather write and allow its format to develop naturally.
Allow for context in order for the content to appear and to progress.
Think about appropriation.
After this feedback I hit a slight road block. I then decided that my topic was far too broad and I was struggling to feel any kind of connection to my work. I was getting far too overwhelmed with all this creative freedom.Through this research I found a Ted Talk on Self-deception, a concept in which I felt that I could truly relate.
The psychology of self-deception by Cortney Warren at TEDxUNLV
Notes:
-Humans are masters of self-deception-We fool ourselves into thinking things are false and refuse to believe things that are true.
-We lie to ourselves about the smallest details, such as how much we really ate today and why we didn’t write our actual height and weight on our driver’s license.
- ‘I will only have one glass of wine tonight’, when I know that I am drinking at least 3.
- We lie to uphold social ideals. ‘I never have sexual thoughts about anyone except my spouse’
-We lie about our most important life choices such as why we married who we did and why we chose a certain career path. Unfortunately, love is rarely the full motivation for those choices.
-Often it is very difficult for us to admit thant we lie to ourselves.
-We lie to ourselves because we do not have enough psychological strength to admit the truth and deal with the consequences that will follow.
-Understanding our self-deceptions is the most effective way to live a fulfilling life. For when we truly admit who we really are, we have the opportunity to change.
-Our self-deceptive tendencies start at an early age, as we start observing and making conclusions about ourselves and our environment.
-Right or wrong, these conclusions that we made affected our identity.
-As adults we most like to lie about how psychologically painful our realities experienced as children affected who we are today.
-Although each of our specific childhood learnings will be unique, what we learned will be exemplified in the lies we tell ourselves as adults.
-Psychological theories of human nature can help us understand our self-deception.
-Sigmund Freud first described lying through ego defence mechanisms. Psychological strategies that protect our egos; our core sense of self, from information that would hurt us.
-Denial: refusing to believe that something is true even though it is. ‘I dont have a problem with alcohol’, even though I drink every day.
- Rationalisation: creating a reason to excuse ourselves. ‘I would not have yelled at you if you hadn’t treated me so unfairly’, thereby justifying my yelling.-Projection: Taking an undesirable aspect of ourselves and escribing it onto someone else. ‘I am, not like that you are like that’.
-Pioneers in the cognitive behavioural realms describe how our thoughts deceive us through cognitive distortions. Irrational ways we think:
-Polarised thinking, thinking in extremes. ‘I will either eat no cookies or an entire box’, because if I eat one cookie I have already blown my diet, so I might as well keep eating.
-Emotional reasoning: thinking that our feelings accurately reflect reality. ‘I feel hurt, so you must have done something bad to me’. ‘I feel stupid, therefore I am’.
-Over generalisation: taking a single negative event as an infinite spiral of defeat. After going through a bad break up you think, I am always going to be alone.
-From an existential perspective, we deceive ourselves to avoid the givens of life, the fundamental realities of being human, that we must face. Death: ‘we are all going to die’. Ultimate aloneness; we were born as a single person housed in a solitary physical body.
-Our levels are inherently meaningless, unless we give them meaning.- To avoid facing these realities we frequently lie to ourselves. ‘I am this way because of my upbringing’, thereby deferring responsibility for my choices. ‘I am not going to write a will, because I am young and I am not going to die anyway.’ Thereby denying my mortality.
-Multicultural psychologist describe how our internalisation of cultural norms affects us. Here we deceive ourselves by believing what we were culturally conditioned to believe is true, instead of deciding what we actually believe is true. We compromise ourselves to comply with cultural norms.
- We often think that you need to look a certain way, be a certain weight and earn a certain income etc. We usually believe these things because we are supposed to and not necessarily because we believe it is true.
-All these theories of human nature help us understand how we deceive ourselves on a daily basis.
-Why should we care about self-deception? It leads to massive amounts of pain and regret. To avoid being honest, we frequently make choices with harmful consequences to ourselves and others. We may use drugs, alcohol, eat, shop, gamble, steal, leave people or pass our emotional baggage down to those we love the most.
-We may choose not to change even when we are miserable or causing profound harm to those around us.-Looking back at life with regret is incredibly painful, because you can not
change your choices in the past.
-When we do not take full responsibility for who we are, we hurt ourselves and everyone around us.
-The first step in taking this responsibility is becoming self-aware. We must become observers of ourselves. When you have a strong emotional reaction to something; pause. When what you say does not match how you act; pause. Ask yourself, what does your reaction says about you.
-We tend to avoid our contributions to the conflict in our lives.
-When you are unresolved about something or someone
-We prefer the path of least resistance
-As we become more honest and aware we become more responsible for our choices.
- If we admit that we are insecure about something; which we all are, we are confronted with a choice. To work on our insecurity or not. Whatever we decide, we are now more responsible for the consequences of our insecurity because we know better.
-Not changing when confronted with the truth is a choice.
-Although we cannot control many circumstances that we encounter in life, we are responsible for our reactions to all of them.
-One of the best ways in which we can confront our self-deceptions is psychotherapy. It is probably the only relationship that you will ever have in your life that exists solely to benefit you.
-There is a lot of stigma surrounding therapy, but the truth is, it takes tremendous courage, to be completely vulnerable to another person.
-Therapy is a gift, if you are courageous enough to accept it.
-Confronting our self-deception is a life long journey.
-As we change the world offers us new opportunities to understand ourselves. There is always more to learn.
-Be more honest liars, choose to become more honest about the lies you tell yourself and use the truth to live the most fulfilling life for you, because you have only got one.
Self-deception is a process of denying or rationalising away the relevance, significance, or importance of opposing evidence and logical argument. Self-deception involves convincing oneself of a truth (or lack of truth) so that one does not reveal any self-knowledge of the deception.
I felt that this type of lying was highly relatable. The ideas Courtney Warren presents and the way in which she delivers her insight into such a distinct concept is what caught my attention. I had suddenly found a type of lying that I could associate my thoughts with.
Performance Rational:
I will be creating a 10-minute art house style film. I will have one main character and a second character who does not appear on screen; they are merely a voice over. The theme of my piece will be self-deception and I will be addressing the conflict that arises from this. I will be identifying the lies that we tell ourselves every day to justify who we are as individuals and to also justify why we have chosen or not chosen the life journey that we are currently on. I want to explore the idea that only once we have identified our self-deceptions, we are then able to live a fulfilling life. My project will require no rehearsal time in the actual exhibition space. The materials required on the actual day of performance, will simply be a projector and a wall suitable for projection. I will be borrowing a tripod from the media department but any other equipment used for filming I will provide myself. I do not want my audience’s response to my film to be too constructed, I would rather them take away their own interpretations. I would like my film to encourage the audience to stop and reflect on how they possibly deceive themselves daily and why they believe that they might do this.
After submitting my performance rational the week prior to our performance I still hadn't consolidated a decent script for the 10 minute video. I was really struggling to write. I would sit down and look at the blank word document on my computer but nothing would come out. It was closing in on performance week and I was bringing to become extremely stressed. I finally cam to a decision that would put less pressure on myself  to write a full film script. I decided that rather than create a video installation, placed on loop, I would rather push myself out of my comfort zone and display a live performance. My piece would be showcased in the performance evening rather than in the exhibition space. I shorten the length of my video to around four minutes and decided I would use the rest of my remaining ten minutes conducting a live interview on stage.
I began by brainstorming the sh*t that people say to themselves on a regular basis and came up with some common phrases:
I know who I am
I am happy and secure with who I am
I am self-aware
Everything will work itself out
I must find their purpose in life
If I have more money I will be happier
I will be happier when I am skinnier
I am not hurting
I have faith
I will only eat one piece of cake
I must be successful in order to be happier.
I am a failure
I will do this later
I am okay with being alone
I do not have time
I will quit smoking tomorrow
I will always be faithful to my spouse
I love my job
I am not judgemental
It’s the end of the world
Through this process of identify common self-deceptive thoughts, I discovered that a lot of the lies we tell ourselves are based on social expectation of how an individual should function in society. These social expectations are often unachievable and fantastical objectives therefore it is more often than not, societies deceptions that lead us to a deluded sense of self.
I then established a film script based on these common phrases.
SH*T PEOPLE SAY
The film opens with a simple definition of self deception and no sound.
Self-deception is a process of denying or rationalizing away the relevance, significance, or importance of opposing evidence and logical argument. Self-deception involves convincing oneself of a truth (or lack of truth) so that one does not reveal any self-knowledge of the deception.
We then move into contradicting images, voice over and text. As the film progresses the overlay of images, voice over and text goes more blurred and intense.
All dialogue is read as a voice over
Dialogue: ‘I am not hurting’
Image: knife cutting wrist
Dialogue: ‘I will be happy when I have more money’
Image: person preparing lines of cocaine to snort.
Dialogue: ‘I will quit tomorrow’
Image: person lighting a cigarette.
Dialogue: ‘I will start my diet tomorrow’
Image: person diving into a cake and stuffing their face with it/
Dialogue: ‘I will be happier when I am skinner’
Image: person looking miserable measuring themselves in a mirror with a measuring tape.
Dialogue: ‘I will do it later’
Image: person receiving a reminder on their phone about an essay that they ignore
Dialogue: ‘I can cope with stress’
Image: Person at desk ruffling through papers and putting their head in their hands.
All sound, image and text will then end. The audience will hear a voice over speaking the following verse:
We self-deceive in order to achieve a satisfactory view of oneself. We like to refuse anything that could confuse the thoughts we have ingrained in our minds. We fool ourselves into thinking information that is false and refuse to believe information that is true. We master deception with the up most intention to uphold social expectation. We lie to ourselves about the smallest technicalities such as how much food we have consumed. ‘I only ate one piece pie’, conveniently forgetting the other 5 pieces that we know we will end up regretting. We deceive ourselves about our most important life choices, such as why we believe that we should spend the rest of our lives with the one special someone. Unfortunately love can be a rare motivation for this devotion.
We are afraid of confronting the truth because we have convinced ourselves that we are not psychologically strong enough to deal with the consequences that follow.  Understanding our deception can lead to self-affection.
