The best part of Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy was when the Joker stranded two ferries in the harbour, rigged with explosives. Each boat held its own salvation: all the people on the boat had to do to get back to safety was press the detonator for the other boat, killing everyone aboard.
And the real kicker: one boat is filled with average, everyday people, and the other is filled with convicted criminals. Neither boat can communicate with the other. The longer time drags on, the more convinced that everyone becomes that the other boat will lose patience and blow them out of the water.
For a while, nothing happens. The guards on the prison boat keep the detonator away from the prisoners.
For a while, nothing happens. Honestly, the Joker thought they'd get to the punchline faster than this.
For a while, nothing happens. The guard who's holding the detonator is starting to look more and more nervous, and finally, a heavily tattoed prisoner calls out to him. It's an "I'm already damned" moment, and the man speaks words to the guard like he's the devil on your shoulder: What are they going to do to me, anyway? Just give me that detonator and I'll do what you should have when you first got your hands on it.
The guard hesitates, but... he wants to live. He's on a ship, damned to be blown up with the people that society says are dangerous—worse than worthless. As far as the other ship knows, the prisoners could violently overthrow the guards any moment. The ship full of civilians *should* blow them up (and the guard doesn't want to die). The guard extends his hand, holding out the device...
The man grabs it from his hand, opens a porthole and tosses it out the window.
He sits back down, glaring at the guard.

Reverse Robins prompt if you're looking
Batman swears he doesn't want a partner. Until he meets Damian. Talia drops him off to be raised by Bruce and, as Bruce has no other kids, the two are free to train as they pleased. Damian grows up and moves out, taking his own section of Gotham to protect under his new, adult identity.
Batman, struggling to get himself reaccustomed to working without a partner, meets Tim.
Tim knows who they are and has been following them, taking pics and copying their moves to teach himself martial arts for years.
He's seen Batman having trouble and insists that he needs a new Robin.
Him.
After protesting and trying to chase him away, Bruce finds out just how alone Tim is at home and decides to take him up on it.
Damian feels replaced and is immediately antagonistic to Tim.
He hates how happy the damn kid always is.
He hates how Bruce is spending more time training him.
He hates how Alfred has changed typical meals that Bruce liked to remove seafood, which Tim is allergic to.
When Tim asks to train with him, Damian goes far too hard on him.
When Tim sleeps over and eventually moves in, having officially been adopted, Damian wastes no opportunity to remind him who the Blood Son is, and tell Tim that he's just a stand-in. Basically cannon fodder. Bruce didn't *really* love him. He'd just needed a soldier.
Over the next few years, Tim gradually grows stronger, but also more withdrawn and depressed.
Bruce takes in Jason and Tim starts going solo on patrol, but he always makes time to train/hang out with/play with Jason, wanting to be the big brother Damian had never been to him.
And then one night Tim never returns to the cave.
There's no call.
No heads up.
No distress signal.
No one knows where he is.
No one can find him.
Damian insists Tim must have just left and openly mocks him for trying to get attention or having not had the spine to quit face to face.
Until Damian finds him three weeks later, having been captured, tortured, and turned into Joker Jr.
Damian is horrified and ends up killing the Joker to save Tim, but its too late.
Tim dies in his arms waiting for help to arrive.
They're all grieving and devastated, but no one besides Jason blames Damian for Tim's death to his face, making Damian feel even worse.
He blames himself for not helping search for Tim.
He blames himself for failing to save him.
He blames himself for being a bully, rather than a brother.
He finally has to take a break from being a vigilante and moves back to Nanda Parbat, throwing himself into his training and confessing what happened to his mother and grandfather.
When he's feeling able to resume his job again, Damian moves back to the manor and life goes on as much as it can.
They all still miss Tim.
But they're learning to live without him.
Talia and Ra's, seeing how rattled and off his game Damian was, decide to follow him back to Gotham, steal Tim's body, and see if they can revive him in a Lazarus Pit.
Tim comes back to life, but instead of returning home immediately, he watches them from a distance.
Damian has moved back home to the manor, despite having an apartment in the city.
Despite Bruce still having Jason.
Tim remembers how Damian used to treat him, all because he was adopted, and gets angry.
He becomes Red Hood, but while Jason!Red Hood's problem was that he wasn't avenged, Tim!Red Hood is more concerned with saving Jason from the abuse he had to endure from Damian.
He breaks into the manor one night as Red Hood, making sure to avoid every trap and alarm while still leaving obvious signs all over the cave and the manor, wanting to send the message 'I know you're Batman. I was in your house while you were asleep. I'm dangerous, and I know all your tricks.'
And then he goes upstairs to kidnap Jason.
Jason is overjoyed to find out Tim is alive, but right as Tim's about to take him and leave, another little kid is suddenly in the room.
Jason explains that Dick recently lost his family and Bruce took him in.
Tim knows he has to save both boys, but now is also even more caught off guard.
He'd spent so long trying to tell Damian that he was wrong, that Bruce really did love him like a son.
But the fact that he'd not only been replaced, but Bruce was still sending kids into battle, even after what happened to him was too much.
Tim tries to kidnap them both, but Dick, who's never met Tim before, gets scared and runs to Damians room for help.
Damian fights off the intruder, but then Tim's helmet falls off/Jason says his name/Damian recognizes the fighting style/he somehow finds out that he's fighting Tim and freezes, allowing him to escape.
Damian is shocked that Tim's alive and he and Bruce work to find him and bring him home.
Only, Tim doesn't want to come home.
Not when Damian is there.
Not with Bruce and Alfred, who never did enough to protect him.
But...
He finally accepts, solely to protect Jason and Dick.
So the family gets to work towards the second chance they never thought they'd get, Tim gets a family who loves him, and Jason and Dick get a very protective older brother.

Not sure if this has been thought before, but I was thinking about Jason and Tim's relationship and how everything went down with Jason's whole revenge plan or whatever and I present the thought of:
Jason is revived, spends his time with the league and then goes and sees that Batman has 'replaced' him with Tim, of course he's hurt by this and he starts to question if Bruce ever really viewed Jason as a son or if it was all just in Jason's head, he doesn't want to believe that Bruce would replace him but the evidence is damning.
Jason being so hurt by this he decides he can't tell Bruce he's back, and goes on to plan all his Red Hood drama. At first Jason is content with doing what he thinks is right as Red Hood and is fine just killing the Joker on his own. As long as Joker is off the streets and can't hurt anyone else Jason thinks this will be enough.
Years pass and Jason has made a name for himself as the Red Hood, and during this time he has become accustomed to seeing Batman fighting alongside his new sidekick, his new Robin. Whether in passing or from a distance, Jason has seen how the two interact and function with each other, and he recognises how much Tim seems to care for Bruce. It's hurtful to think of Bruce having moved on and replacing him but Jason sees his younger self in the way Tim looks at Batman while they're in battle.
In this time Jason has not been able to bring himself to kill the Joker, his own mental turmoil at the idea of facing the man who killed him keeping him from acting on his anger, instead he only fights against the joker from afar, foiling his schemes in ways that didn't require him to ever actually have to face the twisted man.
Jason tries his best to avoid Batman and his new protege, and just continue working in the shadows of Gotham as Red Hood without having to deal with any conflict from the dark knight/his dad, while from afar feeling a sort of connection with Tim, he is technically his younger brother now right? Even if Jason can't bring himself to so much as wave in his direction when near enough that Tim might see him. During a team up of some kind, probably with someone like Harley Quin, Red Hood is informed of the Joker Jr incident and is suddenly filled with such rage, such anguish at the idea that not only had Bruce failed to save Jason, had let him die and then allowed the Joker to keep his own life, but that Bruce would allow Joker to hurt another one of his sons, to hurt Jason's brother. That even after seeing both Jason and Tim suffer at the Joker's hands that Bruce would still let that man continue with his life, continue to hurt people whether those people be members of the batfamily or just civilians caught in the crossfire of an endlessly painful rivalry between the clown and the bat. That Bruce would continue to take Tim out in the field and put him anywhere near the Joker to fight. When it was just for his own peace Jason could've ended the Joker on his own and let that be enough, sure it hurt Jason to think that the man he had seen as his father didn't care enough to avenge him but he would've survived, as long as he got to watch the life drain from Joker's face and the smile spill off his face when he died. But now, knowing what Batman had allowed to happen, not just to himself, but to Tim as well? It was just too much.
That would be the final straw. The thing that makes Jason finally go directly after Joker, to reveal himself to his father, to scream at him and air out his pain, his sorrow and his anguish, yelling "How could you let him do it? How could you let him continue living after what he did to me? How could you have allowed him to live on to hurt Tim? You couldn't protect me so why didn't you protect him? Was it not enough? To lose me? Was that not enough to make you realise? If I wasn't enough why wasn't Tim? It should've ended with me and it needs to end with Tim! How many more Robins will you let him hurt beyond repair? How many Bruce?! You need to end this! Please end this! If you couldn't do it for me please do it for Tim, he deserves better than you gave me!"
Anyway, just a thought I had. it's kinda hard to articulate in this typa format but maybe I'll write it out as a fanfic and it'll make more sense? Don't know if I will though, let me know if that's something anyone would be interested in I guess. But yeah, I'm just like really interested in Jason and Tim's dynamic and the potential they have for brotherly angst and shenanigans so I might just write some random Tim and Jason interactions for funsies whether or not I decide to post 'em.

Something interesting about Bruce's No-Kill Rule and his sons in the canon comics...
Jason's resentment has less to do with Bruce failing to save him - he has come to admit Batman isn't infallible, after all - and more to do with how he wasn't seen as worth avenging.
Of course, there can be plenty debate whether or not Bruce is justified and it's been debated to death, but the interesting part?
When it is Dick who dies - or is dying - Bruce seems fully willing to ditch the No Kill Rule. Three canon examples, in fact.
Infinite Crisis, when it looks like Luthor Jr killed Dick. Wonder Woman has to talk him down from straight up executing Luthor in cold blood.
Forever Evil, where Bruce goes feral and seems full willing to slaughter Luthor when Dick is killed. Though, I guess this can be excused - he just watched his son being killed before his eyes, and he had the same vengeance frenzy phase after Jason died, having to be restrained by Superman.
Third one, when Dick is shot by KGBeast. Bruce tears through everything and everyone in his path, beats the assassin to a pulp and leaves him to die in a snowstorm.
Not sure if KGBeast actually dies, but what Bruce did would absolutely have killed him and Bruce knew it. And unlike the other two situations, not only was Dick not actually dead at the time, even if badly wounded, this was a methodical, pretty long hunt that would have given him time to think it over and choose...
Wonder how Jason would have reacted to this... Bruce wouldn't avenge him, but when it is everyone's favorite Nightwing who is taken...
Sure, in the Owl Song AU this won't hold, since the relationships are very different, but in other AUs or in Canon itself (whatever version you choose as canon)?
How would things change in an AU where Dick is the one who dies instead of Jason? Given Bruce has more or less fully demonstrated his willingness to kill if it's for Dick Grayson...
It‘s one of the aspects of canon I will never understand, nor do I want to. It‘s just unfathomable to me, demonstrating such clear favoritism towards one of your children.
I adore Dick Grayson, don’t get me wrong, but there’s just something so inherently wrong about a parent showing how much more one of their children means to them compared to the others.
And yes, we can argue about how Bruce‘s bond with Dick is just so much stronger because he was his first Robin, how Dick made Bruce as a person grow beyond himself and and his mindset of vengeance, and how Dick was what kept Bruce sane and firmly on the good side.
But that’s no excuse for how he treated the others moving forward. No excuse for forcing Dick into Spyral, for beating Jason up worse than he ever did Joker, etc.
It‘s part of why I think Jason‘s anger towards Bruce is justified. If Dick died instead of him and then came back, demanding Bruce kill Joker… I don’t think it would have ended with a batarang in Dick‘s neck. Just saying.
So yeah, current canon Bruce is a jerk. And an even worse parent. I don’t know why that’s such a popular take for canon writers atm :/
I prefer to stick to storylines where he‘s an actual dad/good person, like his original depiction intended ✨

Reverse Robins!
But specifically Stephanie and Tim (with a little Jason added when it's relevant).
Note: I'm of the opinion that in Reverse Robin AUs they wouldn't actually use Robin as their code name, but for convince and clarity's sake I will be using it here.
Damian is gone. He left in a blaze of anger. They'd fought before, but this time came with a finality Bruce doesn't known how to handle.
Batman is spiraling. Without Damian around there's no need to be Bruce Wayne, no reason not to follow one more lead before turning in. No young eyes looking to him to be an example. Nothing to keep him from beating the bad guys into a comma.
Tim Drake has been watching Bruce Wayne for awhile. He's been watching Batman for longer. He saw the turn, the way the Wayne Foundation is slowly being corrupted without Bruce's over site, and the more extreme injuries criminals are coming in with. He looks at Bruce Wayne and Batman, and the man behind them both and thinks "Yeah, I can fix that." Maybe it's teenage nativity, maybe it's a drive to do something good, maybe it's the need to be in control of something in his life. Whatever it is, he acts on it.
Bruce doesn't want to let Tim be Robin. Damian was his son, and a trained assassin, Tim is a random kid with no formal training. But Tim is a random kid who figured out his identity and is actively blackmailing him with it, so he doesn't have many options.
Batman and Robin are back together. Bruce Wayne is back in board meetings. The criminals are getting a lot less bruises. Robin is far more impressive than Batman ever would have guessed he could be. Tim is falling asleep in math class, but he already knows it all anyway so it's barely worth mentioning.
There's a new vigilante in Gotham. One who sets a dangerous precedent. It's one thing for Batman to have allies, it's another for outside agents to start taking matters into their own hands. Especially when they're untrained teenagers who are looking for personal vengeance.
He does everything he can to get Spoiler to quit. He tells himself it's not just about his personal dislike of her, it's for the sake of every other misguided kid who might try to follow her lead.
He fails.
The Joker attacks Robin. He doesn't kill him, he has a worse fate in mind. He takes Batman's prodigy and makes him his own. Tries to prove that even the Bat's closest ally can be corrupted if he has a bad enough day. He succeeds, and for one terrifying night The Batman faces off against Joker Jr.
Tim survives, but he's not the same. It takes months for his injuries to heal, and even then he's haunted by what Joker turned him into. Terrified that he could snap again at the wrong moment. He tells Bruce he can't be in the field anymore, it's to big of a risk. He promises Batman he'll find another way to help.
Cluemaster is dead. He died on a suicide mission. No matter how Steph feels about it personally, logically she knows Gotham is safer without him around. Part of her can't help being relieved, and she doesn't hate that part of herself as much as she knows she should. There's no longer any need for The Spoiler.
There's an opening for Robin and Steph wants the job. Wants to prove she can do it. That she's just as good as Tim. That she's not her father. That she can make a father proud.
Batman doesn't want Stephanie. He wants Tim. But maybe Stephanie is a way to get there. To make Tim jealous enough to come back.
Bruce tells himself it's for Tim's own good. Stephanie's too. Tim needs the push, needs to be Robin again so he can overcome his fear about being the field. And Stephanie needs the training, and the focus now that Cluemaster is gone.
Robin tries, she really does. She does everything Batman asks of her, always. Except once. And once is all it takes. Robin is fired, but as she leaves the cave Stephanie grabs on to one last desperate chance to prove herself. Batman never intended for the file to be used, but Stephanie doesn't know that. Batman didn't tell her. He never told her anything.
The war that erupts is unlike anything Gotham has ever seen.
Damian comes home. It's not for Bruce. It's for Gotham, for the city that took him in despite everything.
Batman isn't listening to Oracle. He's cutting him off, overriding his systems, and treating him like nothing more than a glorified phone operator. Tim can't just do nothing. Not when his city is burning.
Black Mask captures Spoiler, and nobody notices.
Robin is back on the scene. He's reluctant at first, but once he starts it's like a switch flips. The moves are second nature, the danger is exhilarating. It isn't a game, but part of him can't help relishing it all the same. He can't remember why he stopped.
Spoiler manages to get free. She manages to ambush Black Mask. She manages to pin him to the ground, gun pointed at his head. But Steph can't pull the trigger. Two months ago she would have, but now Batman's voice is in her head. She can't let him down. Not again.
Stephanie hesitates, and in that moment Black Mask breaks her hold. He gets his gun back. There's no moral code running though the back of his head. He doesn't hesitate.
Gotham is safe. Batman did his job. Damian is back. Robin is in the field again. But Bruce is haunted by what happened. Damian is injured, Tim has nightmares, and Stephanie...
Jason Todd isn't new to being poor. He knows how to be hungry, how to fend for himself. But he is new to being homeless. The gang war left lots of kids in the Narrows orphaned, of course some of them were going to fall through the cracks, and Jason happens to be one of them. Maybe it's for the best. He's heard how the Gotham Foster System treats kids. Maybe he's better off on his own. He just needs to find a way to make some money.
Batman descends with all the furry he's been holding in. But instead of an overconfident car thief, he finds a twelve year old boy desperately clutching a tire iron, trying to seem angry instead of scared.
Bruce recognizes something in him that he can't fully explain. He takes Jason back to the manor. Gives him a home. Does everything he can to keep him away from the cave.
That lasts about two weeks.
Jason wants to give back to his community, to make sure kids don't have to deal with the shit he had to deal with. He wants to thank Bruce for helping him. He wants to be nothing like his dad. He wants to make his new father proud.
Damian is against it. Tim is against it. Bruce is against it. Jason is insistent. He decides to take matters into his own hands, to steal an old Robin suit and sneak out after the others have left. It doesn't go well. He thinks he's blown his chance, but to his surprise Batman relents. If he doesn't Jason will find a way to do it on his own, and he won't let another kid go out untrained.
Tim goes back to Oracle. The way he felt the night of the gang war still scares him sometimes, reminds him to much of Batman back when they first met. Guilt washes over him whenever ever he thinks about it. How happy he'd been, all well Steph...
He should have been in the Clock Tower that night. Should have been keeping better tabs on all of them. He should have known she was missing in action, should have been monitoring her suit's location or trying to reach out instead of just listening when Batman said not to involve her. So if there's a new kid running around in the suit, their suit, he's going to make sure this one is safe.
Robin is good. Really good. He's to angry, he's rash, he's impulsive. But he learns fast, and he seems to almost fly over Gotham. He fits the role in a way Tim never truly did.
Black Mask is dead, and someone else is using his name. Someone who's dismantling the Gotham underworld piece by piece.
Steph has a duty to the people she hurt, a duty Batman will never understand, and one she has to handle her way. Batman stopped the war, but he didn't stop the gangsters. He didn't stop Black Mask, or Scareface, or any of the others. It's not about what they did to her. She deserved it. It was her own fault. But so many others suffered because of them, because of her, and Batman did nothing to stop it. So she will.
Black Mask isn't planning to confront Batman. She doesn't care about him. She's done seeking his approval and following his rules. Doing that got her killed. It got other people killed. But there's another Robin running around, and someone needs to explain that. Steph knows by now that she was never really Robin, it was all just a trick to get Tim back. A trick that worked. So who the hell is this kid? Is he like Tim, someone Batman will keep safe, or is he just another pawn he'll sacrifice the second it's covenant? And when she finally gets around to asking, she lets more slip than she should have.
Batman knows the truth, but that's okay. It was only a matter of time before he did, and it doesn't change anything. Bruce tries to appeal to her, but what can he possibly say that could make a difference? That he's sorry?
He is, but it's to late for that. Stephanie knows the truth. She knows he never took her seriously. She knows he never trusted her. She knows it was all a game, and that in the end Batman got what he wanted even if not in the way he intended. And Bruce can't argue, because she's right. He created her, and he knows it.
Stephanie Brown is dead. She died in Leslie's clinic. She died because her doctor decided teaching Batman a lesson was worth more than her life. A lesson he didn't even bother to learn. She died because she listened to Batman even though he never bothered to listen to her. And she died because Batman used her as a chess piece. Because he wrote her off before she'd even properly begun.
Black Mask is not Cluemaster. She refuse to ever be her father. But she's not Batman either. He never gave her the chance to be. She's something else. Something between those two extremes. Something that's fully hers. She's going to protect the people Batman's to busy to care about, and if she has to kill a few people along the way, so be it. She's not playing by his rules anymore. She never will again.
Black Mask is Batman's greatest failure. Not because she died, but because he never took the time to teach her how to live.
Stephanie is Bruce's biggest regret. Not because she died, but because he didn't care about her until she did.

Thinking about a reverse robins au where...
Talia leaves Damian, age 8, with Bruce due to infighting in the League of Assassins. Damian is Batman's Shadow until he and Bruce have a falling out over Bruce refusing to admit the Teen Titans to the League. Damian, age 18, takes on the name Nightwing and moves to New York to lead the Titans with Jon.
When Arthur Brown is killed, Crystal overdoses and Stephanie, age 12,  becomes Spoiler to avenge her parents. Tim, age 11, sees her while stalking Batman and provides her with pictures and intel under the alias Shutter. Bruce catches them one night, and Tim blackmails him into mentoring them.
When Bruce realizes Stephanie is living on the street, he decides to adopt her. Jack and Janet are their typical absentee selves, so Tim's adoption remains unofficial. Damian, age 19, resents Tim and Stephanie so much that he refuses to let them train with the Titans.
The Joker kidnaps Tim, age 14, while he's on patrol and turns him into Joker Jr. Steph, age 15, goes solo to save him and Joker makes Tim beat her with a crowbar, then locks them in the warehouse with a bomb. Stephanie dies trying to save Tim, then is resurrected and taken by Talia al Ghul, who wants to use her as leverage to win Bruce and Damian back.
Tim, now paralyzed, becomes the Oracle, saying that there's no Shutter without Spoiler. Unbeknownst to anyone, he gets to work trying to clone Stephanie.
Damian, age 23, blames himself for Stephanie's death and moves back to Gotham. While hunting the Joker, Nightwing runs into Jason, age 13, who's working for Two Face. He finds out that Jason is trying to support his family - Catherine is still battling her drug addiction and Willis was left wheelchair-bound after working for Two-Face. When Damian looks at Jason, he sees another desperate teenager that he failed, and he's determined not to make the same mistakes again. He takes Jason under his wing, training (and paying) him to fight against crime rather than for it. Jason takes on the mantle of Michael (he is going to be the guardian angel of Crime Alley. He's going to defend them from every threat.)
Tim, age 15, finds out about Jason and comes as close to a villain origin story as he gets. He thinks that Damian is trying to replace Steph, and accuses him of grooming another martyr to die for Gotham. When Damian won't back down, Tim insists on being included in Jason's training and swears to pull the plug the *second* he thinks Damian is putting Jason in undue danger. Training Jason together gives Damian and Tim the common goal they need to build a functional relationship for the first time.
Stephanie, age 19, comes back to Gotham as the Red Hood to kill the Joker, only to find that he's been missing for years. Still, she's plenty annoyed with the new street kid who's stolen her place. (Damian wouldn't even LOOK at her, but he'll take this stupid kid to a baseball game? With Tim?)
She and Batman dance their dance for a few months, then she finds out that Jason isn't an orphan. That Bruce paid for rehab so his mom could get clean, then found his dad a job so they could move somewhere safe. And it's just... Where was Bruce before? Where was he when her mom overdosed? When her dad was killed? Where was he when Tim was taken and twisted, when he was beating her to death for that fucking clown, when she tried to shield him from the blast even as he was strangling her? Where was Bruce then?
Red Hood kidnaps Catherine and lures Jason, age 16, to the warehouse where the Joker killed her. She reveals his secret identity to Catherine, then beats the brakes off of him.(In another world, Sheila Haywood smoked a cigarette while Jason was beaten. In this one, Catherine Todd begs for his life.) There's a bomb because there always is. Because there has to be.
Batman isn't too late. He saves Jason and Catherine, but Hood gets away. Catherine begs Jason to hang up his suit, but Willis stops her. He tells Jason that he's proud of him, and glad that he's chosen a better path than Willis had.
Nightwing, age 26, hunts down the Red Hood while Oracle, age 18, puts together the pieces of her identity. Nightwing catches up to Hood her in one of her safe houses and has a very dramatic monologue, as a treat. ("The last person who left my siblings trapped with a bomb thought it was funny, too. But he wasn't laughing when I was done with him. I wonder if you'll have that same look on your face when I kill you.") He nearly kills her, but is stopped by Oracle.
Tim drags Stephanie back home kicking and screaming. After months of therapy, healing, and screaming at Bruce, she allows herself to be brought back into the fold. She and Jason will never be friends, but they've made amends enough to coexist. Stephanie takes up the Spoiler mantle again.
To celebrate, the family goes to Haly's Circus. The Grayson's die, and Bruce takes in Dick, age 9. Dick discovers their secret identities and dubs himself Robin. He's an angry little gremlin determined to murder Zucco, and Bruce feels like he's been here before a few times already.
Later, there's a rumor of another Spoiler running around. Stephanie, age 22, is not prepared to find tiny Barbara Gordon, age 10, running around by herself, trying to catch bad guys. She starts chasing Barbara around, trying to talk her out of heroics. ("Is this how Bruce felt? Oh, hell, I'm too young to be a mother.") She finally relents and starts training Barbara herself. ("But you can't steal my name, kid. Gotta come up with your own."  "Fine. I'll be Batgirl, then."  "Batgirl, huh? Alright, let's see if you can live up to it.")
I'm just so 😩 about them

hi, Adrian! 4, 9 and 12 for the ask game :3
HIIIIII!!! thank you for the asks 😄
4. an inside joke you have with family or friends— this isn’t really a joke per se, but it’s become household vernacular with my bf and roommate that “i could eat” means “we have 30 minutes max to find something to eat or i’m going to become the joker.” very useful honestly
9. tell a story about your childhood— when i was a kid, there was this one commercial/bumper that used to play on nick jr that featured a clip of a kitten running and playing in a field of flowers, and it WITHOUT FAIL would make me ugly cry anytime i saw it because i was convinced the kitten was lost or running away from home (there was no house, owner, or fence visible in the clip). this was when i was around 3 or 4.
12. some good advice you want to share— this might sound kind of vague or generic, but i think it has informed my approach to most every aspect of my life: you just gotta give yourself some grace and meet yourself where you currently are. be it tackling a bunch of household chores/errands that have stacked up or working on a specific habit or personality trait you want to change, it can be very easy to just beat yourself up for falling short of your desired goal, but doing that isn’t going to make you feel any better OR motivate you to try harder. you don’t have to be able to make huge drastic changes overnight, but if you can tell yourself “okay, here’s where i am Right Now and that’s okay; here’s One thing i can do today,” i think that goes a long way. or it has for me, at least!

Reverse Batfam AU
I don't have all of the Batfam in this line-up because I don't know them at all. There are some that I'm not in any way confident I could characterise so I might make a second version of this with the more well known Batfam members and exclude Duke, Steph, Cass, and Barbara. But, for now I do like my idea. I'm not planning to write a fic or anything with this so if anyone wants to use this specifically, go ahead.
But this is extremely long so everything's under the read more link.
I had to mess around with ages quite a bit because otherwise things do not fit at all. I did want them to come into the family in reverse order as well as reverse their ages.
Age differences: Duke->Damian - 1 year younger Damian->Steph - 4 years older Steph->Tim - 1 year younger Tim->Cass - 3 years older Cass->Jason - 6 months younger Jason->Dick - 4 years older Dick->Barbara - 1 year older
Oldest to youngest: Damian, Duke, Tim, Steph, Jason, Cass, Dick, Barbara
Ages when Dick arrived: Dick 8, Cass 12, Jason 12, Tim 15, Steph 14, Damian 18, Duke 17
Ages when Barbara joined: Barbara 14, Dick 15, Cass 18, Jason 19, Tim 21, Steph 20, Damian 24, Duke 23
Their Stories:
Duke Thomas- The first ward since he was taken in after Damian in canon (as far as I remember). Got into hero business at around the age of 9 because his parents got caught in a Joker attack and he created a "We Are The Knight" group consisting of kids that had suffered from the aftermath of the various villain attacks. A few years later, he became Batman's second sidekick - Signal. After moving out of Wayne manor kept the moniker and joined the Outsiders hero group. He still works with Batman but tries to keep his distance due to him being overbearing. He remembers growing up with Damian being hard, but they mended their relationship by the time Damian moved out. He survived Damian because (1) he wasn't adopted, (2) his parents are still alive, and (3) his powers.
Damian Wayne al Ghul- He took great pleasure in ridiculing Duke for everything from his hero name to his role in the family, but eventually grew to really enjoyed his younger brother's company (even though he'd never admit they were brothers or that he enjoyed Duke's company.) He became Batman's first sidekick, Shadow, (at the age of 10. he arrived 1 month after Duke.) as tribute to both his time spent in League of Shadows and his start to becoming Batman's shadow. He created a teen group outside of Gotham called the Titans (composed of him, Superboy, Raven, and Beast Boy) when he and Bruce started fighting but never quite left Gotham entirely.
Stephanie Brown- She joined the crusade as Spoiler at 11 and lasted only a year before being killed by Black Mask. However, that was enough time for Damian (16 when she died), Duke (15), and Bruce to become attached to her. Her death (and Bruce's subsequent burst of overprotection leading him to kick out Damian and Duke) caused Damian to shed the mantle of Shadow and become Nightwing. She does come back 6 months later leaving the others feeling confused and a bit betrayed, but mostly happy she wasn't actually dead. She creates the moniker Batgirl after Bruce tells her she can't be Spoiler any more.
Tim Drake- He joined the crusade at 13, 4 months after Spoiler's death, which hit Bruce really hard, caused a fight between Damian and Bruce (that ended with Damian and Duke moving out), and Batman became more violent than he had ever been. After failing to convince Damian and Duke to join Batman on patrol and stop avoiding him, he became Drake. Damian didn't like him initially, but tried to be there when Tim needed him. Damian also convinced Tim to change him moniker to Shadow because "Drake" was too close to his name to be effective at hiding his identity. Before Steph came back, he went through the Joker Jr thing and Batman and Signal helped him recover from the majority of it since Nightwing was on a Titans mission. He was just finishing up his training with Shiva when Cass joined the crusade. He was officially adopted one year later shortly after his parents died (because Steph and Cass were around to catch onto his shenanigans).
Cassandra Cain- She joined at 10 years old shortly after Tim did and shortly before Jason did. She originally called herself Orphan, but switched to Black Bat once she was adopted by Bruce.
Jason Todd- He joins a few months after Cass does (age 11) and gets adopted quickly. He and Tim get along extremely well and bond by making fun of Bruce. He takes on the moniker of Batboy when he joins the crusade. He avoids dying in Ethiopia because his siblings decided to go after him while Batman was investigating the illegal weapons trade there.
Dick Grayson- He becomes Bruce's ward at age 8. The entire Batfam was there when his parents died. Everyone's there when he shows everyone his first suit designs and the moniker he chose and why. They try very hard to convince him to choose darker colors and add more armor. He stanchly refuses because he wants his hero name and uniform to honor his parents. They do manage to convince him to add pants to the design. He convinces Alfred to make the suit with the promise that he won't go out until he has Bruce's approval. He doesn't uphold that promise and is crime fighting by the time he's 9.
Barbara Gordon- She'd been watching the bats for a few years before she decided she wanted to become a vigilante as well at age 14. She followed Batgirl for a while asking to be her sidekick or help with the tech stuff. After a few 'no's, she created her own outfit made out of Spoiler, Black Bat, and Batwoman halloween costumes. Names she came up with for herself were Red Bat, Batshadow, and Batlady. When she officially joined the group, Steph gave her the Batgirl moniker and took back the name Spoiler.

Always Too Late
read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/7M6CSrh by Stardyzzled Jason wakes up after over a year of torture, now in the hands of the League, his body mostly mended. He's given the resources and the means to grow again and become better than the child who he believes died in that abandoned wing of Arkham. And he's also given the bastard son of Bruce fucking Wayne to bring back with him, despite his feelings on children being involved. Arriving in Gotham, after months of planning and years of training, his plan started with one simple step. Locating the new Robin. Only, just like everything else in his life so far, that step suddenly wasn't so simple. -------- A world where Joker Junior doesn't just "recover" when given anti-venom. A world where Jason Todd didn't die, but Bruce still lost him and his faith. A world where Nightwing is MIA. A world where Damian may never be Robin, but still flies over the rooftops of Gotham with his brothers. A world where Bruce tries his best, but will it ever be enough? Will he ever learn from his past mistakes? Will he always be too late? 'Shortly after the Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, “Oppenheimer” director Christopher Nolan recalled watching Cillian Murphy transform into J. Robert Oppenheimer for the first time.
“It was really in the hair and makeup tests, which we shoot on Imax and in black-and-white,” Nolan told Variety. “You start to see the actor bringing an icon to life, putting the hat on, the cigarette in the corner of his mouth. You’re starting to see how he moves. It’s a thrilling moment. It is on every film. Seeing Cillian put this iconography together, it reminded me of my hair and makeup tests with Heath Ledger for the Joker.”
“Oppenheimer” earned 13 noms, the most of any films this year. Nolan goes into Oscar night with individual nominations for director and adapted screenplay. Murphy and Emily Blunt are first-time nominees for their work. Robert Downey Jr. also picked up a supporting actor nom.
Murphy learned of his best actor nod from his home country of Ireland. “Thankfully, I live in a time zone that I don’t have to get up at 5 a.m.,” he told Variety. “It was already organized for me. We’ve had a few days off and I’ve been at home, which has been very, very pleasant. I’m actually in my parents’ house in Cork city. I was with my parents and my wife today. So that was really nice.”
He was in his childhood kitchen when the nominations were revealed. “We had a cup of tea and a slice of cake. It was quite nice,” Murphy said. “My mom made a sponge cake. It was very tasty.”
Below, Murphy speaks with Variety about what the nomination means to him and what the real Oppenheimer would think of the film.
This is your first Oscar nomination. The film has been a huge success. How do you wrap your mind around all of this?
Words don’t really do it justice. I think the superlatives fail you at this point. I’m so truly honored and kind of overwhelmed. But most of all, proud of the movie, and proud that it has achieved so much. It exceeded all of our expectations, any of any of us who are involved in making this movie. I get people coming up to me on the street all the time and they say, “I’ve watched the movie five times.” And then these are older people, and they’re younger people and they’re boys and girls. It’s crazy. And then to be recognized by the Academy like we have been, it’s just kind of mind-blowing.
Who from the movie texted you first this morning?
It all came at one time. Everybody. We’re a very tight unit. We’re all very close so it’s lovely to share it with your friends.
Who are you bringing to the Oscars?
I’ll bring my wife and my boys, hopefully. That’s the plan so far.
Has anyone given you advice about going to the Oscars as a nominee?
I have friends that have gone to it in the past. They all say it’s a wonderful experience that you never forget. I gotta go in with an open heart and enjoy it because it may never happen again. So that’s my attitude.
You’ve been doing awards season and meeting a lot of people, but is there someone you still want to meet at the Oscars?
I believe the universe will decide who you meet or not. I’m less about making a beeline for someone’s table. If you bump into someone, you bump into someone and it’s meant to be.
Do you get starstruck?
I met some of the guys from “Succession.” That’s my favorite show on the telly. I’m so heartbroken that it’s finished.
What do you think J. Robert Oppenheimer would think of all this?
That’s a really good question. I think he’d be quite confused, in a pleased way. I think he’d be happy that if nothing else, maybe people will think about nuclear weapons in a more focused way than we tend to because, you know, half the population on the planet lives in a country that has nuclear weapons and we just don’t think about it because there are more pertinent and pressing things going on in our lives. But this is there. It’s like the sword of Damocles hanging over all of us all the time. Perhaps he might be pleased because that was kind of his life’s mission, was to be candid about the state that the world is in.
I have to ask about the “Peaky Blinders” movie – when do you start shooting?
[Laughs] If there’s more stories to tell, I am going to be there. I’m really, really proud of the TV show. I think we made something very special. We made 36 hours of what I consider to be high quality TV. For the film, it will have to be special. But I’m there, man. If there’s a good script, I’m there.
Your next film, “Small Things Like These,” is opening the Berlin Film Festival. [Based on Claire Keegan’s historical novel of the same name, the film tells the story of Ireland’s infamous Magdalen laundries.]
It’s a film that’s very important to me. I’ve produced it, and I’m acting in it. And it’s an adaptation of a book, which is one of my favorite books. We’re the first Irish film to open Berlin.
Why is it one of your favorite books?
It’s heartbreaking and beautiful and quiet and political. It has all the qualities that I enjoy. I hope we’ve been able to do it justice in the adaptation.
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are also producers.
Their company paid for the movie and we produced it together. I pitched it to Matt when we were out in the desert and shooting “Oppenheimer.”
Do you pitch it to him in between takes or do you say, “Let’s go to dinner. I want to pitch you something?”
I wasn’t going for dinner. I wasn’t eating. It was in between set-ups. I think it was during one of the rain set-ups. There’s no time wasted on a Chris Nolan film. There is rarely sitting around. There are no seats. But on this occasion it was a night shoot. We were waiting for the rain towers to get fixed and I pitched him this idea and he went for it.
They don’t serve dinner at the Oscars, so will you bring a snack with you?
Maybe I’ll bring some of mom’s sponge cake in my wife’s handbag.'

Lark/Terry Jr Snippets (Attempting to Flirt) Terry waits until Grant and Sparrow head out of their office for a snack break to look over at Lark. He can see Lark's clearly bored, resting his chin in his hands with elbows resting on the table. The computer screen casts a bit of shimmering light onto the other man's eyes too. TJ tries not to get distracted by the sight since he has a special little plan today. Something he's spent a week gathering the courage to do. He pushes up his glasses and readjusts his tie that's partially under his sweater vest. Then, Terry knocks on his own desk--watching as Lark glances over. He smiles and lifts up his coffee mug, holds it in place so that the words on the mug are clearly visible to wandering, pretty eyes. [Morning Beautiful]
And feels his smile turn to a grin, twinkle in his own eyes, as he sees his companion's mood shift instantly. Lark's flustered, quickly turning away and failing to hide a near giddy smile with one hand. His messy brown hair is framing his chin and stubble and its obvious he's trying to pretend to be mad when replies with a "You're so fuckin' cheesy." Terry laughs and gets up then, glancing to the door and back to his partner. The dark brown haired man comes closer to Lark's desk, planning to stand beside him or sit on a free spot on the desk maybe. Instead, when TJ gets close enough, his freckled companion uses his tie to tug him down into a kiss and its his turn to be flustered now. . . . (Dealing with a Panic Attack) Terry hates cars, really despises those metal carts on wheels, but as the Joker has said plenty of times... We live in a society (that often demands the use of said vehicles) So that's how he ends up getting a ride from Lark again this week. He's got an interview for a teaching position as if the existing car-anxiety wasn't enough. At least he remembered to skip out on the coffee this time. In the car, he sits a straight as possible in the passenger seat and keeps his hands resting on each other in his lap. Lark says a muttered good morning with a yawn and carefully drives out of the apartment complex parking lot. He isn't much of conversation starter and Terry's mind is a landscape of frantic what-ifs, so the green-eyed man turns on the radio to fill the silence instead. It's part way through the fifth song that they bump a little crevice in the road and Terry's switched from clasping his hands in his lap to gripping the fabric of his khakis like a cat trying not to slide down a curtain. That was Sparrow, Terry tries to remind himself as a distraction. His breaths are getting quicker and he hears Lark saying something but can't make it out. He continues with the reminder as he feels the car carefully turning into the next lane. We were playing truth or dare and Grant said he should try climbing the curtain as a cat. It was funny to watch--
"--Terry, hey, are you good?"
"No, no, I guess not! ," He replies with nervous laugh, finally hearing Lark's low and slightly raspy voice clearly now. The taller of the two can feel his nails pressing into his skin now as he can't help but glance around. At some point, Lark put the car into the nearest gas station. Except it still feels like the car is moving in his mind.
It takes feeling Lark place a firm hand on one of his own to push him into sucking in a very quick breath. The radio is still on but the volumes so low the silence is obvious again. Terry can feel his eyes getting damp and he has to say something, anything.
"Iwanttogohomebutdon'ttakemeback. I just...fuck...I really want this....I want this job so bad."
His chest feels even tighter, nausea floating through him as he speaks a mile a minute. Terry has his eyes closed now and knows the next strangled gasp that fills the air is his own. And he knows, too, that he should try and put his head down, in between his legs because that helps sometimes. However, he's worried he might bump the dashboard on the way down and the car engine might decide to explode out of spite.
"I promise I won't take you back home," Lark says after a few minutes and its sounds harsh but somehow hesitant too. Like he's been trying to figure out what to say and stumbled onto that. Terry tries to take another breath in and coughs instead, squeezing Lark's hand tightly for a moment. He can hear his companion scratching his stubble for a moment and then Lark's guiding Terry's hand to be over his heart. "Okay. I won't take you home, and you'll get that job too. Or if not...those people are missin' out. Now, try and breath." TJ feels their hands slowly rising and falling with his partner's chest and nods, shakily. Tries his best to take a proper deep breath with a few more tears and gasps but eventually, he feels okay for the first time since he got in the car. He opens his eyes and doesn't let go of Lark's hand, carefully interlocking their fingers instead. His mind is finally quiet enough to hear the soft music coming from the radio again too. The dark-haired man says a quiet thanks, stamping down the urge to apologize and Lark accepts it begrudgingly. He turns the sound up and they both know the car still has a mostly full tank but they stay in the gas station parking lot for a few minutes more anyway. Terry listens to Lark singing to whatever rock song on the radio and, when he's hands stop shaking entirely, finds himself joining in for a little off-key duet. When the two finally arrive at the school for that interview, surprisingly to anyone who doesn't know Lark outside the rugged, closed off exterior-- He pulls Terry in for the quickest peck on the cheek and the warmest good-luck hug possible before letting him go that day. . . . (Before they were dating) Back in high school, neither of them cared about having dates and only really came to prom to hang with (and support) their friends. While Grant, Sparrow, and Nicky wandered around, TJ and Lark lounged against a nearby wall in the back and chatted a bit. At some point, the two heard the announcement for a slow-dance section coming up and they both looked at each other under the dim and colorful lighting. TJ makes some corny joke about one of the song lyrics with that familiar warm and dorky smile of his. His braids are pulled into a low bun, dark red glasses frames glowing slightly. Lark's not sure why but he ends up asking to have the next dance and Terry says yes. The two teased each other, hiding their fluster in the dark and had fun moving in step. They never talked about it again though, focused on all the other important things in life. Except whenever that one song came up on the radio or a playlist, the memory was fresh in Lark's mind. Always found his gaze lingering over to Terry wherever they were when it happened. He felt ridiculous, being this attached to something that happened so long ago. There was no way TJ would remember it still anyways... Terry on the other hand, could never forget that spur of the moment dance. Always wanted to ask why Lark wanted to dance with him that day. Just never found the right time. With a smile, TJ thinks that atleast it was fun to imagine the possible reasons while looking Lark's way again. One day they'll catch each others gazes and Lark will ask for another dance (and TJ will ask for another after that).

It's fucking weird that DC keeps making new anti-batmen, evil-batmen, that sort of thing, and just ignoring the ones that already exist?
Like they kind of touched on this in the Dark Knights Metal event - Owlman (Earth 3's Evil Batman) gloating to Evil Baby Batman that Evil Baby Batman, the Evil Lantern Batmen, all these Dark Multiverse Batmen were "dumb ideas," but he's the "original" Evil Batman and so he'll survive the next Multiversal Rebirth - but I'd say even Owlman is a step further than I'm happy with.
Like one of the current antagonists of Absolute Power is Failsafe, Batman's Batman, essentially a robot Bruce designed to stop him if he ever killed (it's slightly more complicated but whatever). The last major villain in the Batman solo was the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh, a split personality he developed that was Just Batman, that lacked the human elements of Bruce Wayne, so it could continue The Mission if Bruce Wayne started to fail (it eventually took over the robot)
The last Major Multiversal Villain was The Darkest Knight, also known as The Batman Who Laughed, who used an army of evil Batmen from the Dark Multiverse to take over all of reality in Dark Knights: Death Metal (that's where the Owlman interaction earlier came from). The Batman Who Laughed was a Batman who killed Joker, got infected by Joker Venom in a kind of Dead Man's Switch scenario, and became a Jokerised Batman. Interestingly, we actually learned all of this in a crossover event from 2018, Dark Knights: Metal, where he arrived on Earth Prime as part of an Evil Justice League from assorted worlds in the "Dark Multiverse," gathered by the god Barbatos. Specifically, an Evil Justice League composed entirely of Evil Batmen filling each role.
This is ignoring the fact that Flashpoint Batman became a significant villain for a time during the City of Bane arc; ignoring the Infected arc between Metal and Death Metal where TBWL "Jokerised" a bunch of characters like Shazam, Supergirl, and Jim Gordon; ignoring the fact that the New Team in Absolute Power (the current event), Task Force VII, are a bunch of Amazos filled with Alternate Universe versions of the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh; ignoring the Joker War, where Joker got his hands on all of Bruce's tech, gear and money; DC just can't stop making Evil Batmen! And it already had more than enough!
As mentioned, you've got Owlman, Thomas Wayne Jr. of Earth 3, an Evil Batman from a Morally Inverted World with its whole Evil Justice League, the Crime Syndicate of America/Amerika, if you're wanting a straight-up Evil version of Bruce Wayne; if you want a highly-trained, highly-skilled tactician who can go toe-to-toe with metahumans that he has no right to beat, you've got Prometheus; if you're looking for someone with a brutal streak and a mission opposite to Batman's, you've got Wrath, a lesser-known Anti-Batman who's kinda of somewhere between Prometheus and Killer Moth; and speaking of which, if you want someone with the gimmicks, gadgets, and over-the-top theatrics of Batman but with a decidedly more Villainous streak, Killer Moth is right there!
Honestly, I feel like DC needs to buckle down and either reintroduce all of them separately or find some way to put Wrath, Prometheus and Killer Moth in a comic together, maybe in a sort of Battle For The Cowl situation. I think it could be fun, watching Bruce struggle to combat three different "Anti-Batmen" with vastly different motives and methods. Hell, bring back Lincoln March, the New 52's Owlman, and you can even have a fourth. Failing that, just use each of them, and really stress the things that make them different.

All right, because I’m amused at this, let’s analyse. Worst person who is a mother or worst at being a mother to their kids are two separate questions, but I’ll look at it together:
Martha: so I guess this hinges on whether Lincoln March really IS Tommy Jr, in terms of how bad it can get. Potentially had a kid out of wedlock/disabled kid that she locked up in an institution but still visited. Put Bruce in boarding school even though they very much were still living at the Manor.
Mary: the worst I can say is possibly had an affair with Richard/Raptor after marrying John? She also commodified her child’s talents at a very young age as part of the family business.
For Babs let’s look at both possibilities given it wasn’t specified:
Thelma: slept with her brother-in-law even after marrying Roger and possibly got pregnant with Babs afterwards. Died in a car crash.
Barbara Eileen: left Jim and Babs and took James Jr in the divorce, trying and failing to get him effective treatment for psychopathy. Was so focused on James Jr she overlooked a lot of Babs’s trauma.
Sheila: A doctor who's guilty of medical misconduct and embezzlement. Didn't raise her son and dipped out on him as a baby. Betrayed Jason to the Joker, leading to his death. Largely doesn't view Jason as her own kid and did not raise him.
Janet: Tried to shield her toddler from seeing dead bodies, was in the middle of a marriage breakdown when she died. Put her son in boarding school because she and Jack were travelling for work so frequently.
Crystal: Pre-Flashpoint, nurse who is addicted to pain medication and who needed her daughter to take care of her while she was addicted. Got clean and straightened up her life. In n52, was working with Arthur and betrayed Steph's location to Arthur when he was trying to hunt her down due to her activities as Spoiler, but reacted angrily when Arthur responded by trying to kill Steph.
Shiva: did not raise Cass and let David take her to raise/experiment on. Killed Cass once and immediately revived her. Put Cass in a Lazarus Pit after Mad Dog killed her. Has attempted to fight Cass to the death on multiple occasions and would love to get to do it more often.
Talia: Got pregnant either by stealing DNA from Bruce or lying to tell him that she miscarried. Cloned her son multiple times, and set one of the clones (Heretic) to attack the Bats, resulting in the death of Damian. Raised her son in a cult and fought him every birthday, telling him she would not introduce him to his father until he defeated her. Assigned Damian to extremely harsh training programs from birth to make him the perfect heir, including things like the Year of Blood when he was about 8 years old. Implanted a chip in her son that let her take control of his body and then let Slade control the chip to fight Dick, while Damian had to watch his body betraying him. Placed a bounty on her son's head.
Elaine: Was in a relationship with Gnomon who got her pregnant, and then ran from him during the pregnancy, getting married to Doug. While insane on Joker Venom said some horrible things to Duke.
tl;dr: there are three people on this list whose actions resulted in their child's death, and only one of them was actively raising the kid.
